This boy has a bright future.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy broke into a popular Outback zoo, fed a string of animals to the resident crocodile and bashed several lizards to death with a rock, the zoo's director said Friday.

The 30-minute rampage, caught on the zoo's security camera, happened early Wednesday after the boy jumped a security fence at the Alice Springs Reptile Center in central Australia, said zoo director Rex Neindorf.

The child then went on a killing spree, bashing three lizards to death with a rock, including the zoo's beloved, 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to "Terry," an 11-foot, 440-pound saltwater crocodile, said Neindorf.

The boy also fed several live animals to Terry by throwing them over the two fences surrounding the crocodile's enclosure, at one point climbing over the outer fence to get closer to the giant reptile.

In the footage, the boy's face remains largely blank, Neindorf said, adding: "It was like he was playing a game."

By the time he was done, 13 animals worth around $5,500 had been killed, including a turtle, bearded dragons and thorny devil lizards, Neindorf said. Although none were considered rare, some are difficult to replace, he said.

"We're horrified that anyone can do this and saddened by the age of the child," Neindorf said.

Alice Springs police said they are unable to press charges against the boy because of his age. Children under age 10 can't be charged with criminal offenses in the Northern Territory. His name was not released because of his age.

Neindorf said he plans to sue the boy's parents.

The boy's small size is probably the reason he didn't trip the zoo's security system, which relies on sensors to detect intruders, Neindorf said.

"I just want people to learn that they can't let their children go and run amok," Neindorf said. "If we can't put the blame onto the child, then someone has to accept the responsibility."

There are so many things wrong in this story. How is a 7 year old left with so little supervision that he can break into a zoo without his parents noticing? What kind of little demon spawn is he? What kind of legal system doesn't allow for some punishment of a child under 10?

Zergrinch Oct 3, 2008 09:37 AM

Well, he probably DID think he was playing a game....

Zoo and parents were both negligent, and I actually find the story funny.

nuttyturnip Oct 3, 2008 10:03 AM

If he had just fed the animals to the crocodile, I might agree with you. At 7 years old, though, he should understand that beating an animal to death with a stick is wrong.

Bludgeoned them to death WITH A ROCK. If a kid is seven and doesn't realize that bashing things with stones will hurt them, then the parents probably SHOULD be held accountable.

Future serial killer, imo.

DeLorean Oct 3, 2008 02:48 PM

Feeding things to a crocodile, especially live things, sounds like extreme fun to me. But I agree that breaking into the zoo and bashing lizards on the head with a rock is way over the line, his parents should be held accountable.

Zephyrin Oct 3, 2008 02:52 PM

Yeahhhh....that's pretty sadistic.

So um, what's wrong with Australia? That's a completely retarded law.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Oct 3, 2008 02:54 PM

I say take the kid and feed him to the crocs.

See how he likes it.

Seriously, though. This is awful. It's a sign of mental illness and bad parenting. Someone should certainly INVESTIGATE the situation at home, at the very least.

Does anybody else see this and think that he means he's just mad that they won't be able to punish the little shit in any meaningful way?

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 3, 2008 02:59 PM

Remaining nearly emotionless while killing 13 animals doesn't really sound like "he was playing a game." This kid has some pretty serious mental issues, and it's crazy that the law can't do anything to him. The parents deserve to be sued regardless, but surely there could be an exception like legally enforced therapy for a case this violent.

I read about this early on the morning and yes, it's amusing. However, has the video surfaced yet? 30-minute rampage sounds too alarmist.

Or maybe they'll force him to make something like this.

RacinReaver Oct 3, 2008 04:10 PM

In Australia a knife is to a machete as bash with a rock to death is to ???

PKO Oct 3, 2008 04:37 PM

Too bad he couldn't make it over that fence; it would have been a fitting end to the "rampage" if he was devoured by the crocodile.

valiant Oct 3, 2008 05:07 PM

Just out of curiosity, where was his parents at the time? Does he live next to a zoo or something, how in the world did he get to the zoo?

A lot of this story doesn't make sense.

Yeah, it all depends on what HOW you kill the animal, right? I mean, shit. How you come to the conclusion that the line is over there by the rock but no where near the THROWING THINGS OVER THE FENCE TO FEED TO A LIZARD?

I should ban you for general idiocy. Someone give me a reason not to.

At 7, a kid might not comprehend that tossing a small animal to a crocodile and watching it be devoured is a terrible thing. If he's visited the zoo and seen a feeding, or watched nature shows, or seen his cat catch a mouse, it might seem like a fun thing to watch. Using a rock to beat anything to death is completely different, because the boy is an active participant. He's not watching a crocodile eat something; he's feeling the lizard squirm in his hands, possibly hearing it scream or make noise, has the blood on his hands, and watches it die (rather than disappear down the croc's gullet). Sure sign of a serial killer right there.

Well, you see, if you look at his ChocoPie gra-----oh, never mind.

As for the crazy kid, the zoo officials should have released the resident Frilled-Neck Lizard. Those things will scare anybody, even if they are a psychopathic-venerable-goanna-killer.

Both these can be answered by looking where he is from, The Northern Territory of Australia.

I don't think DeLorean is 7, turnip.

Although that'd explain a lot about his threadmaking habits.

Bradylama Oct 3, 2008 09:18 PM

An entire continent powerless against a 7 year old child.

Elmoogle Oct 4, 2008 05:12 AM

The only solution to this is of course for Australia to ban more video games.

??? = "You shoot a guy out of a high-speed catapult... right into a brick wall!! Trouble is, it would be over too quick. No good for TV, you know? You'd have to do a whole bunch of guys right in a row. Rapid-fire capital punishment. Fifteen catapults, while you're shooting off one, you're loading up the others."

I found the article in German:

ZOO-MASSAKER: Siebenjähriger metzelt 13 Reptilien nieder

It is not an Australian problem, though, kids become more violent everywhere in the world, it's a mess.

We get gangs of little 9-year-olds rampaging schools in Sydney during the day, walking around with an iron bar and baseball bats, seeking out one particular kid... Actually, I think there might have been a 13-year-old in there somewhere...

Don't exactly know the full story there, so correct me if I'm wrong, though I'm pretty sure that's how it went down...

Though still, every single one of those kids weren't punished (and I do know that for a fact), and for some reason, I've got a feeling the 14-year-old wouldn't have got much either, if there was a 14-year-old at all.

It's a stupid law. It takes a kid to commit murder before they're punished, here in Australia. Though if they're 9-years-old, and they steal a car and seriously hurt a pedestrian and crash into someone's house (seem to remember thatstory too for some reason...), they get away with it.

...But it's not their fault. Nah, it's their "medication" making them do it, according to the news. ;)

...:twitch:?

I'm not going to go into all the ways in which that is a stupid comment to have thrown out there, but Tritoch nailed the main one: being blank and emotionally unaffected implies it wasn't a game (generally you play games to have fun, no?).

I amazes me that not more is made about the parents in that article. Seriously, where the fuck were the parents? Who let's their 7 year-old go wandering off alone, and who is OK with them having been missing for half an hour? Parents need to start taking responsibility for their kids and stop trying to blame the world for anything they do wrong.

Traveller87 Oct 6, 2008 11:38 PM

While a seven-year-old may not have a concept of what "death" really is yet and may not understand that actions in this direction are irreversible, a 30-minute killing spree is extremely concerning. A blank expression while inflicting pain on animals? That does sound like an early indicator of later antisocial personality disorder - at 7, it's probably conduct disorder.

There has to be an intervention happening RIGHT NOW. While I do not agree with imprisoning 7-year-olds and I think the Australian law is right in that respect, I'm shocked to read that all that is going to happen is the zoo suing the parents. They need to find out what the hell is wrong with this boy!! Especially since the zoo director, in a different article, said that the family has a history of violence. Who knows what his home environment is like.

Ignoring the clear pathology behind this act is only going to make the problem worse. If it's reptiles at age seven, what will be next?

Children generally grasp the concept of death around age 5, with age 7 being extremely late development. Most likely the kid knew exactly what he was doing and was just indifferent towards the consequences.

Traveller87 Oct 7, 2008 11:16 AM

Actually, they do not fully grasp the concept until around age 9. At the psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents where I worked last summer, they had a 9-year-old girl whose brother had died. She had ticked on an evaluaton form that she often wished she were dead, but in conversation, it came out that she did not really have a full concept of death yet.

You can see the same in children's play: 6-year-olds frequently "kill" an animal, but then have it stand up again and continue their game. Their perspective is different from ours.

Nevertheless, I do agree that there was a pathological element in there, especially if he killed the animals himself and was emotionally unaffected by it. Children that age do understand inflicting pain on others, and he was probably dealing with animals who tried to escape, moving, possibly vocalizing their pain. It is definitely not "normal" behaviour for a 7-year-old.
