Klonoa! (now without that $80 ebay price tag)

Seven years since Klonoa 2 and we get... a remake of the first one. :(

Quote:

Namco Bandai has announced in the latest Famitsu magazine that a Klonoa : Door to Phantomile remake will be released on the Wii on December 4 in Japan. The game will have cel shaded graphics and NES style controls with the Wiimote. The game is 99% complete.

Maybe more than four people will buy it this time. Maybe five! See you in another seven years when they announce a Klonoa 2 remake, followed by a gumball machine based off the Volleyball game and a novelty dildo that refreshes various holes with the existence of the GBA games.

Tails Oct 1, 2008 08:07 AM

In before Miles buys five million copies. Is the Wii region locked? He'd probably buy them anyways even if he can't play it.

Miles Oct 1, 2008 09:56 AM

No one could find the original PSX version because I bought every US copy in existence.

Namco, I take back every bad thing I said about you these past few years. =D I hope that they let you use the gamecube controller with this game. Sideways wii-mote kinda sucks for playing games.

I would have thought that the game was 100% complete, given they already launched it once. Maybe that's why nobody bought the Playstation version, because it wasn't finished?

OmagnusPrime Oct 1, 2008 10:40 AM

Another Wiimake, what a shocker. This could be decent, but they seriously need to start putting some better shit on the Wii.

Wii Fit was the second best selling game in the UK last week with Wii Sports still somewhere in the top 10. You can forgive them for resting on their laurels I guess. When people are still buying the same old crap, there's very little incentive to release anything else.

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 1, 2008 12:16 PM

While it was horribly disappointing at first to see this was just a remake, I'm still looking forward to it. Door to Phantomile was the first PSX game I owned, and I loved it. I guess I must have sold it at some point though, since I couldn't find my copy when I went looking for it a year ago. With any luck this will lead to a new Klonoa game too, but just having a remake of the original is fine by me.

GhaleonQ Oct 1, 2008 12:18 PM

It is my duty to buy it solely because it might induce Namco Bandai to bring over any old or new Klonoa games.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 1, 2008 12:42 PM

As noble as that is, Namco will "grace" us with this remake and nothing more. There's no way in hell they'd do something NEW.

I'm just glad it's not going to the 360, where there would be DLC for new hats for Klonoa, and each one would cost you 10 dollars. There would be four hundred of them. One would have the Team Aces logo, one would have a Tales character on it, some Valkyrie No Densetsu hat, and one would have some reference to The Tower of Druaga, which would make some faggots feel hardcore for getting.

Either that or we could pay to go straight to the last level. I dunno.

Buizel Oct 1, 2008 01:32 PM

You do NOT want to know the words that came out of my mouth last night when my friend showed me that image.

This is very exciting but a bit disappointing. Though it's a remake of DtP, at least Namco didn't forget about Klonoa! Hopefully if (enough) people buy it they will consider making more games *coughtruesequelcough* (though I didn't mind the GBA games).

This is going to be my second imported game for the Wii this year. Come on $80 price tag (estimate)! :tpg:

Dark Nation Oct 1, 2008 01:42 PM

Oh neat! I Played a little of the game on emulator (Since Miles bought all the copies) and it REALLY has dated badly. I will be wanting to get this when it comes out :3:

Don't be ridiculous, Skills. The real money would come from selling off each of the Idolm@ster girls as replacements for Huepow.

Put Balls Oct 1, 2008 04:13 PM

Even a REMAKE of Klonoa is miles better than anything put on Wii. Here's to hoping for a real sequel, since they already reckognized the fanbase's existence with a remake of the first game.

Muzza Oct 1, 2008 07:11 PM

I'll buy it. I've played and really enjoyed all the Klonoa GBA games and Door to Phantomile (haven't checked out Lunatea yet), so this is a no-brainer.

...What is it with game producers today announcing their games when they're virtually completed? Where's the suspense?! (Still waiting for the day when a game's announced well after it's been released. "New! 100% Completed! Available in stores from last week!")

speculative Oct 1, 2008 07:41 PM

I'd rather buy a remake of the original on Wii than have to track down a used copy of the PSX version on Ebay for $80 frankly.

Miles Oct 1, 2008 09:08 PM

The original isn't that expensive anymore unless it's sealed. Then the price jumps in the 200s! xD

It's a concious step by developers. When you announce details of a game halfway through development, there's potential for a lot of people to be dissapointed when you end up leaving out half the features ('Sup Mass Effect?), plus kids these days get so worked up and excited about the release they can't help but be let down when the final product ends up not actually providing a cure for cancer like the thought it would.

You wouldn't expect to see trailers for a film too long before it was released and I guess games developers are following suite, waiting until the game is in an all but ready to release state before starting the hype machine rolling. Also, as more and more developers are consolidated under a fewer number of producers, the parent companies aren't going to want the interest in a future game to negatively impact sales of one that's already been released.

Kesubei Oct 2, 2008 09:49 AM

Looks really good! I'm about tired of remakes as well, but if enough people buy this game, I'm sure we'll start seeing more Klonoa games on the Wii. Maybe a remake of the Klonoa on the Wonderswan that no one got a chance to play.

Torte Oct 3, 2008 08:25 PM

Must buy for me. I've played the 2 GBA adventures, the PSX volleyball game, and Klonoa 2. All are awesome.

JazzFlight Oct 4, 2008 11:42 AM

I wonder if they'll be redoing the music or leave it as-is.
I'm a big fan of the two main klonoa soundtracks, so I'm hoping to get a redone OST. The Klonoa games really had a great "dream-like" atmosphere, which is of course appropriate due to the storyline. I actually think it pulls off the "dream" feeling better than Nights.

Buizel Oct 4, 2008 03:13 PM

Yes, I'll be also interested in their arrangement. Hopefully they don't overdo/kill it. x_x

For those who care (and wonder why Namco(Bandi) didn't update their Japanese's Klonoa@home page) here's the Official Site Wiimake. Right now there's nothing beside a wallpaper-look-a-like page but if you look hard enough you'll see something opening up on October 10th. :)

For those keeping tabs, it seems that Namco made some adjustment to stages (in this case a boss stage).
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Pwiivspsx1.png

This could be a good or bad in term of difficulty... or how the director vision a stage from the beginning (if you read his notes from the magazine).

The official site is now open. So far only the story and character page is up. If you don't understand Japanese one of my friend will be translating the site on his dA's Journal page.

A CM/trailer should be popping up on the 18th but I think this video is likely to be it. From the trailer they're speaking Japanese and it sounds like Namco is using the original soundtrack. I hope this is just a trailer only as a part of me wish for an arranged soundtrack. Though I'll be fine if they stick to the original.

Metal Sphere Oct 30, 2008 04:10 PM

Creatively bankrupt? Surely you jest...

Going by this little BandaiNamco opinion poll it looks like we're going to get an XTREME DU PU RU DU sooner rather than later.

Buizel Oct 30, 2008 04:21 PM

LOL. I got the survey via email and was surprise by the concept artwork A (first/left one). What the hell were they thinking?!

Anyway I'm still putting my money down on buying the Japanese copy. Who knows how long and how half-ass NamcoBandi announce a US/North American version.

Metal Sphere Oct 30, 2008 04:45 PM

Yeah, I was horrified with what they had in mind for a Klonoa revamp. But now you just sparked a new fear in my mind: What if they give Japan the old Klonoa and give us that new hardcore one (like that Tales game which has either CG models or anime)?

Buizel Oct 30, 2008 05:35 PM

Scary indeed but I doubt they'll go to THAT trouble to make different version.

The only thing I'm worry about is how are they going to do the voice when they announce the North American version. The remake throws out the "Klonian" language and stick to Japanese. I just hope it doesn't sound ANYTHING like Klonoa Beach Volleyball PAL version. @_@

Question #10

How many games did you purchase within the last 12 months?

1
2
3
4
5+
Other

How the fuck does other factor in to that? Unless you bought none I guess but I'd have said that most numbers bigger than 5 are covered by 5+.

JazzFlight Oct 31, 2008 11:00 AM

You know, I do like the new design, but not if that means changing the old Klonoa. Like, I wouldn't mind the new design as a separate franchise (or new character). The whole point of Klonoa is that he has that Pac-Man hat and the big floppy ears.

Dark Nation Oct 31, 2008 01:05 PM

They should at least keep his hat OR his ears, if not both.

Buizel Oct 31, 2008 02:41 PM

I'm sure the only reason NamcoBandi made the survey only to see how "hardcore" are you to the game, or Klonoa in this case. A fan must be stupid enough to say they like concept artwork A (again the left/first one).

Anyway, there's a new trailer on the official site (or if you're lazy you can view it on youtube.com). It features (great) voice actors for the characters. Great cast I must say. :)

Oh, I forgot to show this yesterday to what I answered on question 12. :tpg:

JazzFlight Oct 31, 2008 05:52 PM

I can't wait to see the sad ending again. =(

Miles Feb 21, 2009 08:32 PM

This deserves a bump with some updated information.

http://images.gamefly.com/images/games/e/135420e.jpg

US release date is tagged as 5/5/08 and the game is priced at 39.99 on gamestop:
Gamestop.com - Buy Klonoa - Nintendo Wii

And finally, the producer is keeping a blog on IGN and plans on updating it every two weeks. hopefully this will get the game the exposure it deserves.
Klonoa - Experience

I am drowning in anticipation here. I'm really excited that we're getting another Klonoa release... even if it's a remake. This was one of the most overlooked titles on the ps1 and this release will hopefully introduce this wonderful series to more people. Currently I'm replaying all the other games. Finished Klonoa 1 last weekend and I started working on Klonoa 2. I might have to dig out my PS2 though because the the 60GB ps3 can't even run the game properly. It cuts off the music and display every time it switches areas. =\

Buizel Feb 22, 2009 04:56 AM

I guess a blog is better than... oh say, it's own sub-website at Namco Bandai NA like how they did for the Japanese release. At least it's something and it's an interesting read.
*might also submit "questions"*

Metal Sphere Feb 22, 2009 12:41 PM

You're in for some crazy shit, Miles. The game goes from Awesome! to Holy-crap-why-did-I-wait-so-long-to-get-this real quick.

Especially at the end, wow.

Miles Feb 22, 2009 02:55 PM

Oh I know. I've completed Klonoa 2 like 10 times already. It was one of the first PS2 titles I played. It managed to make itself better in every aspect which is what a sequel should do. If they make a 3rd game I don't see how they could top the second one. @_@

Miles Apr 19, 2009 11:48 PM

Bump!

This game launches in 2 weeks and the price has officially dropped to 30 dollars. THIS IS A FUCKING STEAL! Any Wii owner is not a true fucking gamer if you don't buy this game. This series deserves some love from everyone and you probably won't be disappointed if you play it. And please, for the love of god, don't mix it in with the "shitty wii shovelware" crowd like most gamers will probably do because this game doesn't deserve that treatment. ;_;

And those of you in PAL land, you are getting blessed with this too. I dunno if you'll get the slashed price like us but it is still a must own game.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Apr 20, 2009 12:43 AM

Wow, I was sold just because it was Klonoa. It being 30 bucks only makes it easier on my wallet.

However, I'm confused about the voicework. I know there's an english voicetrack and a dupurudu voicetrack, but I can't determine the authenticity of the reports saying that the dupurudu is done by the english voice actress/actor and not Kumiko Watanabe. That, to me, would be just... sad.

Miles Apr 20, 2009 12:50 AM

I don't know where people are getting confirmation that the Phantomile language track is done by the English VA. As far as I know, it was only confirmed in the IGN blog that both languages would be selectable but it said nothing about who voices it. I don't see why Namco would redo the Phantomile language using the English voice actors unless they are trying to keep things consistent. Otherwise, it would make more sense (and save them money) to just reuse the same track since it doesn't make any sense either way.

Personally, I think it'll be untouched. I guess we'll have to wait for someone to preview the English build of the game to know for sure.

£25 but it's not out until November. Assuming that's not one of those silly placeholder release date Amazon are so fond of.

FatsDomino Apr 20, 2009 07:53 AM

That's an interesting thought. The dupurudu voice track would be too much effort to do over in English. I hope if they do have an English voice track that they also offer the Japanese voice track with subtitles. I just like having full options.

If this game does well what do you think they'd do next with Klonoa? A port of Klonoa 2 or a new console game?

Klonoa 2 seems most likely.

And I know I'd personally be *all over* that.

Put Balls Apr 20, 2009 08:51 AM

I think I'll have to buy this at some point, I could play it on my parents' Wii. I too would like to know the release date in the old world.

I played Klonoa 2 until I had well over 150 dream stones in every level (and I think I got everything in the first game too). Love the games to death, just don't own an original copy of the first game, so this is a welcome purchase.

Chen Apr 20, 2009 12:03 PM

Well , I don't own a Wii but i still think Nintendo should stop with the re-makes.
of course thet belongs in a different discussion and not related to this one so ill get back on-topic.

I just realized i never beaten a Klonoa game , and I feel like im missing something.
ill have to check it soon ...

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Apr 20, 2009 01:02 PM

That was a pretty shitty attempt at an on-topic comment.

You also realize this game is made by Bandai Namco, and Nintendo has no say in what remakes are made other than the ones related to their own IPs, right?

Buizel Apr 20, 2009 04:27 PM

Hmm, someone on another forum said that the game is coming out on May 22 in Europe. It sucks if people in Europe have to wait longer (is Namco going to dub in every language or something? @_@).

Hopefully sales will be good enough for them to "enhance"-port Klonoa 2 on Wii (they need to fix the horrible interlace problem that's on the PS2 and widescreen support please!) and THEN Klonoa 3. :33:

I'm surprise Spinda/Miles didn't post a link to the North American Official Site.
Watch out for the "Wahoo!" :tpg:
...and there's going to be some sort of contest...

Miles Apr 25, 2009 04:26 PM

Just thought I would mention that for some odd reason Gamestop changed their release date from 5/5/09 to 4/29/09. If this happens to be correct then the game will be arriving a week early.

Gamestop.com - Buy Klonoa - Nintendo Wii

However, amazon and most other websites still list the game for its original 5/5/09 release. And the 29th is a Wednesday which is a weird since most games get shipped on Tuesday to arrive on Wednesday. So don't get your hopes up too much.

It seems possible though considering the game went gold on April 7th.

Paco Apr 26, 2009 01:38 AM

Just pre-ordered my copy right now. I'll be playing it at school come Wednesday if it does, indeed, ship that day.

Miles Apr 26, 2009 02:26 AM

Ence. <3 for sales++ on Klonoa. You won't regret your purchase. :3

No. Hard Pass. Apr 26, 2009 05:02 AM

Deni's Prediction:

Miles will, within a few days, incorporate a blue banner heralding anyone cool enough to buy this game as his GFF hero of the week.

Miles Apr 26, 2009 03:18 PM

My prediction:

I will ban Deni from GFF unless he posts a picture of himself holding a copy of Klonoa for the wii.

She Loves Piano Apr 26, 2009 05:37 PM

I, for one, can't wait for this! Not as exciting as a new Klonoa title (I'd rather have had a new Pikmin title than a remake too!), but Door To Phantomile is a lot of fun. I still play my playstation version from time to time. I like the sound of Klonoa's voice much better in the original based on what I've heard of the new voices and SFX.

Miles Apr 30, 2009 07:51 PM

Well, it looks like Gamestop will have this tomorrow. They called me earlier today to let me know that I can pick it up after 12 on Friday. I LOVE it when games arrive on Fridays. Perfect timing for the weekend!

Odd that the store claims they'll have it tomorrow when they recently changed the release date on their site to 5/5 like everyone else. Hopefully they didn't just forget to update the date for automated calls.

Miles May 1, 2009 02:38 AM

Well Ence claims to have it already on his backloggery and he's from ca too. So I'm sure my gamestop will have it tomorrow.

Good News / Bad News time

Good News: Pre-ordered the game, so its just a waiting game at this point until it arrives in the mail.

Bad News: It might not arrive in the mail until the 10th =\

She Loves Piano May 1, 2009 06:40 PM

My Gamestop had the game and let me have it even though I had not preordered it! The music is much improved and the voices are fine so long as you use the Japanese language track and it even comes with a coupon for a free taco (I'm not kidding!)!

Buizel May 1, 2009 06:45 PM

Er, the music is the same from the PS1 version.

...and :twitch: @ free taco. lol

Miles May 1, 2009 09:20 PM

KLONOA GET! I chuckled at the free taco coupon too. Most random thing I have ever seen packaged with a video game. It makes sense though. Wahoo's tacos. I bet Ence used his already. XD

I also laughed at the Gamestop employee who wondered what Klonoa was. I told him it's the coolest platformer ever. Then he tried to advertise the new Wii-Sports game to me and I was like "No, it sucks. Get Klonoa."

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 2, 2009 09:36 PM

So far so good! It took some time to pick up the game (no one knew about it and were extremely confused about the shipping date), but I finally got it.

Cleared Vision 1. Using the Classic Controller and mapped the controls in the way they were on the Playstation/PS2, so it's all coming back to me. I've missed you, Klonoa. :tpg:

Miles May 3, 2009 01:38 PM

Finished the main game. Now I'm onto 100% everything. Of course the ending is still as depressing as ever.

Overall, I was very satisfied with this game. They did a good job at remaking the levels and they are possibly some of the most beautiful and colorful areas I've seen on the wii. The US version added the ability to turn on a graphics filter if you have component cables. I strongly suggest you use this! Most of the characters were redesigned nicely as well, though I don't really like Hewpoe's other design that much. Even though the game was made easier with the addition of 2 hearts, some people new to the series will have some difficulties in the 5 and 6 visions if your platform skills are lacking. Best of all, with all these enhancements and redesigns, I felt they did a fantastic job of staying true to the original game.

Right now I'm trying to collect all the gems and those medals you get for clearing those challenge areas found within the visions. They take a bit of practice to get a good time on. Of course these videos make it look easy: Namco unleashes flurry of Klonoa clips

I hope this game sells decently enough. This is Namco's attempt at reviving one of the best 2D platforming series out there and so far this wii-make bombed in Japan. If we want to ever see a proper Klonoa 3 release it is up to the NA and PAL markets to show Namco that people still love this series. At the 30 dollar price point you can't lose because this game just screams quality. Anyone who loves platformers, old school style games, or just wants a good Wii game for once, go do yourself a huge favor and pick up a copy. You won't regret it!

I'm hoping Klonoa can find a new home on the Wii because he fits the console perfectly.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 3, 2009 02:19 PM

Jesus that was fast, Miles.

I did my part to get a Klonoa 3. Hopefully a lot more people than just you and I did as well.

A specialized vendor in Tulare released the game on the Wednesday that Amazon said it was supposed to be released, so that's the day I got mine because GameStop refused to give it to me that day. I canceled my pre-order with them but, since they wouldn't give me a refund for it, I had to take store credit for it which I then used to buy Samba De Amigo for Wii.

Eh, Spanish Klonoa is better. :tpg:

BTW I tried setting to the other language but it doesn't work on my NTSC Wii. It might work on a PAL Wii. This also mean that the game is basically finish for Europe.

Just wanted to say that I bought this and excitebots yesterday while last minute mother's day shopping less I face the wrath of Miles and possibly skills.

Beat it last night and of course, I loved the game. Forgot how short it was but the budget pricing makes it work out fine in the end.

I was surprised by the Costume room after I beat the game, but very happy that I could switch to Klonoa's Zipper outfit from the subsequent games. Going through reverse mode now.

Yeah just unlocked a bunch of stuff by beating the game. Do you unlock music or something by beating the unlockables or getting 100 % completion on all stages? Not completely sure I want to go back through a few stages where I might have missed one coin or a few dudes. I'm not even sure how it calculates a fully completed stage anyway.

Maybe it's just me but besides the neat filter and some of the water graphics and stuff the game didn't look as good as Klonoa 2. But then again perhaps they're going with some sort of simple style here. I didn't like seeing Hewpoe's polygons in every cutscene for instance. I guess the game was a hodge podge of quality is all. Good game still.

Beat the extra tower stage to get the music box. You thought it looked worse than Klonoa 2? After playing both games back to back the remake of 1 looks much better visually, though the level design and difficulty balance is so so much better in 2.

Do you get anything for getting all of the crystals in a stage beyond the blue dream crystal that shows up underneath it?

I don't think so but collecting the dream stone is part of unlocking stuff at the end of the game (according to the Japanese version; I don't know if they change it for the NA version because I manage to collect EVERYTHING on my first run XD).

- You'll unlock the costume if you collect, in total, 600, 900 and 1200 dream stone.
There's 1800 dream stone in total (if I did my math right) so you shouldn't have a problem getting up to 1200 dream stone on your first run (unless you purposely avoid collecting it).

- And if you collect at least 100 dream stone in each vision and beat the game, you'll unlock reverse/mirror mode and the Extra Vision.

Oh man.

So this is my first exposure to the Klonoa series. Finally beat the game last night. Darn if that is not one of the most depressing videogame endings I've ever seen. I was expecting "ha-ha fluffybottom Phantomilian gibberish" - not that. :(

Are the endings of K2 or the GBA games that "BAAAAAWWWW" worthy?

Matthew Perry, an actor from the show Friends, plays Klonoa with his pants down around his ankles. Disturbing, yes? :o

It's a pretty good way to anchor yourself to the couch. I don't see what the big deal is.

How does being pantsless help the anchoring, unless your couch is vinyl?

FatsDomino May 26, 2009 12:21 PM

I find it difficult to walk around with pants down around my ankles.
