Do you know your neighbours?

So, I've been living in many different areas, and I've had both experiences. When we lived in Calgary, our neighbours were family friends, we'd always have huge ass block parties and stuff, it was alot of fun, but when we moved to Dubai - we didn't know our neighbours at all - only saw them once or twice when we were both outside at the same time (or the time when they tried to kick one of our dogs - I put the fear of god into one of our neighbours (oh how fun it is when you're pissed off at someone, and double thier weight, and have an extra couple feet of height on them).

Anyways, We moved around a couple of times in Dubai, and only really knew our neighbours when we were living on the *outskirts* of the city, in a compound - and then we only knew the kids on one side of us.

Now that I'm in College - I didn't really socialize too much with my nieghbours in residence (us aviation students stuck together), but when we moved in the spring of '04, we met the neighbours to which our new townhouse shared walls. And since moving into an apartment almost a year ago - we still havn't met our neighbours.

So, does GFF know thier neighbours?

J-Man Apr 2, 2006 12:58 PM

We have the kind of corny relationship with our neighbours that is usually reserved for movies. He has a short white fence dividing our properties and we give him a wave hello every now and then. His wife gives us left over turkey soup every Christmas and Thanksgiving, and we go over to their place for a New Years party every year. Kinda lame really.

ArrowHead Apr 2, 2006 01:04 PM

Don't know the neighbours to our right since they just moved in a few weeks ago...

As to the neighbours on our left... cool black guy except he doesn't seem to like the concept of shovelling snow.

Rydia Apr 2, 2006 01:16 PM

When my family and I lived in military base housing about thirteen years ago, we knew most of the neighbors. After moving into a house off base, we weren't familiar with the people around us aside from having the usual small talk. I live away from home while in college now, and I don't know the people around me either.

Wojo Apr 2, 2006 01:31 PM

I live in suburbia so yeah I have met my neighbours. Our next door neighbours are pretty good friends of my family.

Ryuu Apr 2, 2006 01:33 PM

I don't know my neighbors, though I think my Mom might. They're all older than me and always at work anyway so I rarely see them if ever.

Summonmaster Apr 2, 2006 01:53 PM

The neighbour in front of me is middle-aged, but sometimes I'll see her at school.
The neighbour beside us is older, and we've met a couple of times.
Sometimes we see the usual people from the apartment's floors and they make small talk.

maneve Apr 2, 2006 01:54 PM

I've lived here for ten years, but I've had very limited meetings with my neighbors. I used to play with some kids at the end of my road, but after they moved I've not interacted with any neighbors since. Probably better anyway, I guess the ones to the right have been making meth and stuff. Probably don't want to get to know them.

Shadow Drax Apr 2, 2006 02:02 PM

I know the neighbours on one side of me by sight, but not really to talk to. We speak when we see each other, mostly just hi, but usually longer conversations in the summer and such when we're all out basking in the sun! The neighbours on the other side of me moved in more reccently, and although we say hi if we meet each other, I wouldn't recognise them in the street or anything! Pretty shocking, but I'm hardly ever in or near my house these days!

Eleo Apr 2, 2006 02:06 PM

We used to know our neighbors. Every last one of them. When we were younger, there were tons of kids who lived on our block. Slowly but surely they all moved away; none of the same people are here anymore. My godmother happened to live next door; it was a lovely time. Especially when we didn't have any syrup for pancakes. :knock knock:

Now I don't know who is on the block, really, except for next door neighbors and the lady across the street who tries to fine us when we don't cut our grass, etc.

JackTheRipper Apr 2, 2006 02:07 PM

I know my neighbors. On one side is a family with two daughters.. one of them is in my grade. On the other side are newlyweds who moved in last year because the guy who lived there before died.

Tir Apr 2, 2006 04:17 PM

I hardly know my neighbours, I'll recognize maybe one or two of them. I don't say hello or anything else to them, and they don't either.

Gumby Apr 2, 2006 04:20 PM

I don't really have any neighbours... At least none that are really close. Oddly enough I live in an apartment building.

Nahual Apr 2, 2006 04:53 PM

I know my neighbors, we've met once. We don't visit each other or anything like that. We might wave to each other every now and then.

Radical Apr 2, 2006 04:56 PM

I know all of my neighbors. We have a block party once every year, and we hang out a lot, usually once per weekend.

Locke Apr 2, 2006 06:07 PM

I've seen my neighbours too - hard not to when you live in an apartment, we've just never actually met, just usually walking past thier door to ours, or to the elevator.

Double Post:
err, walking past them unlocking thier door

Blanka Apr 2, 2006 06:24 PM

I don't really know my neighbors that well, I've said hi and everything, but I haven't socialized with them.. ever.

Dobby Apr 2, 2006 06:35 PM

Mmm one who lives about 20 steps from my place, a townhouse, is in my chem lab! so we bug each other for help sometimes, lol

With the other neighbors, we're not on a name-by-name basis with a number of em, some are though. We do the usual greetings though!

Mucknuggle Apr 2, 2006 06:59 PM

Ya, I "know" my neighbors. I know that the guy across the street is obssessed with mowing his lawn (2-3 times a week during the summer), watering his grass (4-5 times a week - even when it's raining), yelling at his kids, making babies (since they've moved in they've had roughly one kid a year). I haven't seen the wife in a few months and now I know why - they just had twins in February. That brings them up to a total of 5 children, the oldest one being in her first year of school (which makes her 6?).

The neighbors next door only spoke to us because they wanted to change the fence. The ones behind us only come over to complain about nonsense. The other neighbors across the street never leave their house.

My best friend during childhood was one of my neighbors, but then we kind of just stopped talking.

Damn - my neighbors actually suck.

Synonym Apr 2, 2006 09:12 PM

I know my neighbors. But we don't party or anything. We just look each other in the eye and size us up. Then we wave and retreat back into our gloomy sunshiny suburban homes.

Ah, its the life.

Maico Apr 2, 2006 09:31 PM

I actually don't know them. I've seen them when I'm coming home, getting the mail, or out washing my car, but that's about it. It's so damn hot here anyway, so no one is outside to begin with. And the whole idea about knowing your neighbors and they'll be there to protect you or to call the cops if they see someone breaking into your house or something is bullshit. Hell, they're probably at work or something too, and what, like they got nothing better to do all day then sit at their windows watching your house? Just hire a house sitter, who'll probably steal all your shit anyway, yea?

I've thought about getting to know them, maybe baking them some cookies or something and bringing it to their house, but, ahh, fuck it. I've got other things to do.

Spyer Apr 2, 2006 09:34 PM

Well, I know them fairly well, but not super well. The people across the street are very strange though. They leave and come home in the most unexpected times (like 4am in the morning) or something like that. They also never come outside to talk with anyone - very antisocial.

Kinda suspicious if you ask me. Maybe a drug operation? :X

quest2368 Apr 2, 2006 09:56 PM

I've met both of my neighbors. Know their names and talk occasionally. But do I really know them as I know a friend? I think not. We socialize about this and that, but I don't really know them too well. We help each other watch over our houses, but that's about it.

I think it's good to have distances with your neighbors. You stay out of my business, I stay out of your business. Don't get me wrong, you can be acquaintences or close buddies, but not every neighbors are willing to be one.

Elixir Apr 2, 2006 09:58 PM

I've lived here for what, 12 years now? I haven't bothered to socialize with my neighbours based on the fact that my house is surrounded by a block of flats on the right side, and two larger apartments on the other side. People don't generally stay for more than 6 months.

And most are them are indians, so.

Quite interesting, as I've yet to find my community that open. Most of the time it's just drive into your garage, close the door, and in you go. No talking.

There's the occassional person walking the dog, and perhaps smiling hi, but not much.

Actually sometimes during the summer I'm outside with my garage door open and doing some airbrushing from model kits. I guess this is some sort of attraction as usually guys will come stop by and ask what I'm doing. I don't mind talking to them I guess, as long as they don't TOUCH MY FREAKING STUFF. ;_;...

Sarmoti Apr 2, 2006 10:15 PM

More than I would like v_v.

I live at the end of a one-way street and from here, there are five houses. Two that're identical to mine, a trailer, a brick house that was once a garage and another house on a hill.

The people living right next to me are a bunch of church-humpers that use to beat their kids(With plastic pipes) for not following their religion, it got so stupid that it drove their oldest to do drugs and their youngest(who used to be my best friend) to run away.

The house next to them has had a few families goin' in and out so we haven't even bothered to meet them.

On the other side of the road is the Trailer, a single mother and three kids two teens and one kid. ALL of which are complete trouble making A-holes. The youngest girl walks around without underwear and goes wherever she sees fit(which was something else they got reported for, aside from throwing stuff in peoples pools).

In the brick house lives another redneck with horrible disposition(He also goes out of town to deal drugs which he has been caught growing behind his home).

Then up further lies the house on the hill and it lives a family friend. My parents have known her for years. She's pretty friendly and a hoot to talk too. It just sickens me that she had to be the one that first found out that one of our neighbors likes to take leaks wherever and whenever she pleases.

Also, her husband has Alzheimers.

Yeah, my neighborhood ROCKS!!:edgarrock:.

acid Apr 2, 2006 10:48 PM

My neighbours on my left hand side are quite nice. Fairly quiet, yuppie type, but nice nonetheless. Always say hello if I'm out in the garage and they come home.

My neighbours on the right, that's a different story. The kids are both nothing buy trouble. The police have been at their house more than once. Fighting in the street, stolen vans, and fairly certain they broke into my dad's truck. The parents are both clueless, as the mother lets them run wild and the dad is powerless to stop them. And they have dogs. Dogs that bark. Alot. Right outside my bedroom window.

I hate them oh so much.

Dopefish Apr 2, 2006 11:00 PM

I don't know my current neighbors as well as I have ones in the past. I've had maybe 3 or 4 families living next door, one in particular being pretty close with in my grade school years.

Mercury Blue Apr 2, 2006 11:16 PM

Well we have two houses.
House 1 is close to the city and I only know one of my neighbors. I don't like them, their kids are brats who recently spray painted all the street signs so you can't read any of them now! And my mom told the mother and she acted like she didn't care! And on the other side of my house our new neighbors are super unfriendly and very nosy at the same time!

And the other house, I know only one neighbor really well and the others I don't care to know.

Do I wish I knew them better? No, not really. The less I know about them the better.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Apr 2, 2006 11:23 PM

I've never really been very close to my neighbors. We all just kind of live our lives and try to stay out of each others' business.

The only people I know at all are the Russians next door. Eugene, the father of the family, often comes over and hangs out with my father. They talk about Europe together.

The whole town has something against foreigners, and the neighborhood is no different. Small town people, I guess. So yea, they avoid us as neighbors, since we're foreign. That means WEIRD and COMMUNIST or something.

Otherwise, the neighborhood here only know each other through their kids playing together. There are a lot of kids in the neighborhood. Both Eugene and us have no young kids.

Also, my people are, like, WICKED obnoxious. We yell and scream, and I think the neighbors think we're psychotic. Then here I am, working on the truck while my sister sunbathes in the front yard and my father is climbing all over the boat.

I can see why they wouldn't want to know us. ^_^

Lady Miyomi Apr 3, 2006 12:30 AM

I don't really know any of my neighbors mainly because I choose not to know anybody. I don't live in the world's greatest neighborhood, so I'm usually trying to get out of the neighborhood fast or get back in the house fast. However, I do know one of the neighbors. She's the crackhead next door that tried to kill all of us when she decided to get drunk and let the pilot light on her stove go out.

Admiral Amara Apr 3, 2006 01:41 AM

I live in a dorm, and my whole floor knows each other. It's an awesome community, we all hang out and watch "24" and "House" and DVDs of "Arrested Development", maybe play DDR, Axis & Allies, Risk, Monopoly... whatever. We just have fun.

Chip Apr 3, 2006 04:21 AM

I've been living here in this area for almost 19 years now and yeah, I know all of my neighbours here :3 In this street and, well almost the whole subdivision. For the main reason that, its just a small subdivision (50 houses) and well, we have this chapel in the subdivision where almost everyone goes into during sundays, that and, well I'm a member of the youth club/comittee (what sux is, I am the oldest in such group, thats active anyways -______- )

EmpyreanHorizon Apr 3, 2006 11:27 AM

I noticed something about neighborhoods here: when I lived in a smaller house, I got to know my neighbors better--I tend to get bored or suffocated in my own house because of space (or lack of it) so i bothered them in their houses.
When we got a bigger house, in a more exclusive neighborhood, people regularly keep to themselves. The only people mingling with each other in the streets are the maids and drivers.

Well, we do hear some random swearing of the Chinese guy diagonal to our house, the really noisy Koreans in the house behind ours and the try-hard drummer two houses down.
In addition, we have these avocado, chico, and mango trees in the back, and a chilli plant in the front--random people try to steal some without telling us, which kinda pisses the hell out of me. It's fun, though, catching them climbing the fence, reaching for the fruit and then one of us asking them calmly if they'd care to have some.

Some years ago in December, I was the crazy neighbor telling the party across the street to, and I quote, "fucking turn the fucking noise level down so i could fucking sleep...." I didn't stick my face out any window for a week. So, yeah, I love my neighbors. *snigger*

Syndrome Apr 3, 2006 12:12 PM

We have pretty fair contact with the neighbours on our left side. They're a very nice family, we always say hello and stuff, and my father dressed out as Santa Clause for their kids last christmas :)

Fire On Ice Apr 3, 2006 12:56 PM

well our neighbours to our right are super friendly, they've been family friends since we moved in 18 years ago. Their kids are about 5 years older then my brothers and I but we were still companionable. Our neighbours to our left are a younger family though. I babysit for them whenever I'm home but because we're an older generation then them we don't really have any reason to be buddy-buddy with them. We know them and we're polite to each other but that's about the extent of it.

ComCrimson Apr 3, 2006 01:06 PM

I know them in the sense that we'll say hi when we pass each other when we're around. Me and my family don't really get together with the neighbours though. It's just a casual friendship thing. My next door neighbours are a bit miserable anyways. They can't stand music so that doesn't really mix well with us

Yunnie Apr 3, 2006 03:43 PM

Nope, we never really talked or met our neighbors who live in the same duplex building. All I know is that they got 3 girls living next door (becuz of 3 cars) and they got two dogs becuz they bark and yap all the time. It bugs the hell outta me.

Acro-nym Apr 3, 2006 04:03 PM

I used to know more of my neighbors, but the family living next door moved away. I've played basketball with a few of the neighborhood kids and used to go to school with one across the street. We used to have drug dealers, but they are apparently not in the neighborhood anymore, which I hope means that they were caught.

I don't know my neighbors as well as I could, but that wasn't an option in the poll. I kind of had to reply "yes" because I could pick most of them out of a lineup.

splur Apr 3, 2006 09:19 PM

Used to know most of my neighbors, we used to have neighborhood bbqs and parties. But all of us grew older and kind of lost touch. Mostly when most of my neighbor's kids went to university, I was only entering highschool.

nazpyro Apr 4, 2006 12:42 AM

Do I know my neighbors. Hell, I don't even really know my apartment mates.

Anyway, at home, I know only 1 neightbor now as people have moved away and stuff. When I used to live in the dorms, yeah, I knew my "neighbors." And, now in an apartment, I know a few of my "neighbors" because I know them from elsewhere anyway and they live there now.

But mainly, at home, I don't know people in my neighborhood anymore.

iokcs Apr 4, 2006 04:05 AM

i just moved, so no i dont know my neighbors here, although in past places i lived, i never bothered to get to know anybody unless they wanted to get to know me... when i was a kid though i knew everyone in my entire block... maybe it shows that i just dont care anymore to find out who people are unless they have some kind of reason to be known by me... <.<'
