2009 College Football

New Thread, new upsets!

russ Aug 4, 2008 11:13 AM

Three of the top six are SEC teams

I think it's kind of silly for Auburn to be ranked 11, though hey, maybe they will surprise me and actually be good.

I'm guessing Georgia vs THE OSU in the big game in January.

Trigunnerz Aug 5, 2008 03:08 AM

Hehe. Good times are coming.

The usual arguments: BCS is gay, SEC is the best league, PAC-10 is as good as the SEC, USC is overrated, Big Ten is overrated, OSU shouldn't be in the top ten rankings ever, Charles Weiss is going to die of a heart attack before he disgraces the team further, blah blah blah.

Go Trojans! I think I'm the only USC fan here. Let the hate begin.

Man Oregon got so shafted last year. After Dixon got injured, the team pretty much rolled over and died.

Cal always starts off strong and dies out. I guess it's the hype that gets to people.

Our first home game will be against OSU. That is going to be a fun game to watch. Hopefully by losing to us, OSU won't ever have a chance at the national championship.

I'll be honest. I didn't think USC would be #2. I mean considering we have a new quarterback (Mark Sanchez) and lost a few good players like Keith Rivers.

Fight on! And beat the Cavaliers!

Slash Aug 5, 2008 03:23 AM

Yeah, Oregon was just a complete heartbreak against Arizona with Dixon going out during that game. I really like how Roper managed to come back and help the Ducks beat the living day lights out of South Florida. I'm also not surprised that Leaf completely tanked.

I'll be flat out honest, I won't super seriously care about the SEC, Big 10 or any of em till it gets closer to week 8 or whatever, right now I'm interested to see where the PAC-10 goes.

Like Tri said, with USC getting a "new" QB in Sanchez (and according to Wiki, some dude named Mitch Mustain from Arkansas, and from the looks of it, has a pretty solid record) it'll be very interesting to see what happens in College Football.

But I will be very interested to see Hawaii as well after their season last year.

Trigunnerz Aug 16, 2008 11:37 PM

Preseason polls usually mean jack squat. But it's still fun to analyze and argue. Though hopelessly pointless.

Don't expect to see...I'd say 15 of these teams in the top anymore in the first 2 weeks

But I don't think South Florida should be where they are, especially after getting completely dominated by Oregon in their Bowl Game

Gechmir Aug 17, 2008 10:07 AM

I'm anxious to see how A&M will do this year. We finally got rid of Franchione (who I've hated from the get-go) and have a coach worth his pay. Time will tell, but we should perform much better than in the past.

Slash Aug 28, 2008 10:48 PM

and today....

IT BEGINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So right now I'm watching the Oregon State/Stanford match. 4th Q Stanford up 29-20

Apparently a North Carolina State player took an extremely hard hit for what I saw of that play.

Trigunnerz Aug 31, 2008 03:58 PM

52 to 7 Trojans!

Sanchez looks very strong. Looks like the transition will be smooth. I like how the second, third, AND fourth string QBs got to play in the fourth quarter.

Beat the Buckeyes!

Slash Aug 31, 2008 04:21 PM

This year is shaping up to be quite pretty for the PAC-10.

When I was watching the little ticker thing I almost screamed WTF!? Since all that could be seen was Arizona vs Arizona St. It was actually Northern Arizona vs. Arizona State lol.

From seeing what I saw, it looks like it'll be USC, Oregon and Cal sitting in the top. Riley looked like he was playing extremely well (especially after that debacle of the Cal vs. Oregon St. game)

SuperSonic Sep 7, 2008 10:58 AM

Good lord...East Carolina is a team to be feared. Knocking out two top 25 teams is not an easy feat.

WVU, what the hell? Their offense couldn't get anything going, but their defense was just absolute shit. East Carolina had them beat in everything. Maybe if they had thrown a really long pass the score might have been closer, because it worked before and it allowed them to put that field goal up.

I think everyone was pissed about how the Brigham Young and Washington game turned out. I mean sure, that guy should've made the PAT no matter what the yardage but everyone was pissed about the celebration penalty, even the guys at the ESPN news desk. I agree that it needs to go as bad as the BCS needs to go.

russ Sep 7, 2008 11:14 AM

I've been lucky enough to catch both ECU victories on tv, and I have to say, they looked really good on both sides of the ball in both games. Their quarterback is really good and really seems to know what he's doing on the field.

I watched the Auburn game yesterday morning, and while they looked pretty good at times, they definitely don't look to me like a top 10 team.

Should be an interesting season to watch. Next week USC vs THE OSU. I'm guessing that USC's 54 running backs will have fun.

Slash Sep 7, 2008 04:33 PM

Heh, USC vs OSU is something I would expect to see in the BCS Game.

Honestly, the way I see it right now is the winner of that game, unless they completely collapse (which has happened before like..~cough~ USC vs Stanford) the winner will be at the Championship game.

USC. And probably Georgiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

russ Sep 13, 2008 09:28 PM

Just finished watching the Auburn vs Mississippi State game. Auburn won 3-2. Yes, three to two. Their defense was great, their offense was a joke. In fact, the two points that their offense allowed on the safety came from a holding call in the end zone. They got called for holding quite a few times. These offensive line guys need to practice more. If they are still ranked in the top 10 on Monday, I will be surprised.

Gechmir Sep 13, 2008 09:44 PM

Christ, the Auburn game made me facepalm so many times.

GAME IS OVER -- oh, wait. A turnover.

GAME IS O-- fuck, fumble.

GAME IS-- FUCKING HELL. Intereception.

I had no idea that a penalty could cause a safety prior to this game. Learn something new every day! :3: I love a good defensive match, but that game was ridiculous :( Watching USC whip Ohio at present.

russ Sep 13, 2008 09:55 PM

OSU looks more confused on offense than Auburn did. And sadly for them, USC still has a couple of touchdowns left in them before its time to go home.

Trigunnerz Sep 13, 2008 10:33 PM

35-3 Trojans! The Buckeyes? Talk about overrated. I loved that interception Rey Maualuga had for the touchdown. The other team tried to push him out of bounds, but NOPE. Touchdown!

No doubt that USC is NC material.

On a side note, lol at Auburn's score. 3-2? LOL.

Fight on! And beat the beavers!

Slash Sep 14, 2008 01:10 AM

Yeah, but you gotta remember also that OSU was missing one of their big players

not like that matters.

But for PAC-10 news.

I'm absolutely shocked the Ducks won. They really didn't really deserve that win, after the way they played in the first half. But all I can say is THANK GOD the defense stepped it up and stopped Purdues point streak. But I do have to say that I could collectively hear all the hearts of the Purdue fans drop at the final touchdown of the game.

And ROFL at Auburn. Thats either REALLY REALLY good defense or really piss poor offense.

Wow. OSU dropped from 5 to 13. Quite a drop. Well I guess that's expected considering the ass whooping they got on Saturday.

And how is Auburn still in the top ten? I guess a win is still a win, no matter how ridiculous.

Fight on! And beat the beavers!

russ Sep 15, 2008 11:59 AM

I think it is reasonable to say that Auburn definitely has a top 10 defense, and the potential for a top 25 offense. Their offense looked really good against a lesser opponent a couple weeks ago, and looked bad this week. I think that once their line (Lee Ziemba I'm looking at you) gets it together, they will be better. Their offense looked decent in the first half of the Mississippi State game, they just struggled in the red zone (I understand that this is typical of spread offenses, especially newer ones) and missed a couple of easy field goals. The second half they just fell apart. There were several instances where they put up a long gain, got a first down, only to have it called back on "holding, number 72 of the offense. 10 yards from the spot of the foul, replay 3rd down". Hopefully they will get better soon, because the defense can't bail them out every time. Also, don't expect them to be in the top ten next week, they have LSU coming up.

Lukage Sep 15, 2008 04:38 PM

I forsee a 2, 3, 4 Big 12 lineup going into our game against Texas.

SEC beating up on themselves equally is very likely. :)

After going to the game and seeing LSU's two quarterbacks in action, I think we're gonna be in some trouble. :gonk::gonk::gonk::gonk:

SuperSonic Sep 18, 2008 11:03 PM

Any shred of hope that WVU had of getting back into the top 10 just went to hell. The game against non ranked Colorado went into OT and McAfee kicked the ball into the left post on the field goal attempt causing Colorado to take possession and make their field goal.

Colorado is now 3-0 while WVU is now 1-2.

I'll be looking forward to the LSU/Auburn game on Saturday.

Slash Sep 20, 2008 10:18 PM

I would like to request that this week the PAC-10 didn't exist :)

Please?

IdleChill Sep 20, 2008 10:19 PM

I knew the QB position was going to give us trouble. Thankfully Lee pulled something out his ass and settled in in the 2nd half.

Yay for LSU and yay for the SEC tonight (I'm looking at you, Georgia).

russ Sep 21, 2008 10:50 AM

It was a good, exciting game, it's just too bad that Auburn lost. That was a nasty hit on Hatch, and it was pretty unfortunate for him that his lineman was right behind him and put the knee to the back of Hatch's head. I guess it was unfortunate for Auburn as well, since Hatch wasn't doing anything at all, and once Lee came in during the second half, their offense started working. It's clear that with Lester on the sideline, our offense struggles, but with him on the field, the offense struggles moderately less. Ben Tate is not a spread offense type runner; he is an I-formation runner.

Lukage Sep 21, 2008 01:49 PM

Love how votes change between USC and Oklahoma this week on first place despite them not playing.

Slash Sep 21, 2008 02:45 PM

And thus USC is the only hope again for that one west coast conference lol.

Granted Boise State deserved that victory. I should've realized when Oregon went for a 2pt conversion on the first touchdown at the beginning of the game...we were fucked.

Yes, I am still pissed at Oregon because I don't know what the hell was going on in that game and seriously...Oregon and USC WERE the only hopes of any real PAC-10 victories, maybe AZ and Cal too but yeah...there goes that hope

DID YOU SEE THE FIRST HALF?!

Gechmir Sep 26, 2008 12:15 AM

I love how the OSU Beavers beat the USC Trojans :3

Beavers were on top early, but I was expecting Trojans to turn it around and pound them hard in the end. Disappointed~ In the end, the Trojans couldn't pull it out and remained under wraps. The Trojans penetrated the Beaver defense too far and lost it all. I was thinking the Beavers would get pounded on both sides of the ball, but I guess I was being cocksure.

Still, I love me an upset =D

Slash Sep 26, 2008 12:16 AM

The Trojans defense was aboslutely sucking.

The Beavs were rushing on 3rd and 5+ downs and converting!

IdleChill Sep 26, 2008 02:01 AM

Eh, just another year of USC football. C'mon guys, you aren't really surprised are ya?

russ Sep 26, 2008 08:21 AM

Haha yes, suck on that USC. I didn't even know they were playing last night, and I wake up to see that they have lost. That is just too awesome.

IdleChill Sep 27, 2008 08:09 PM

Let it be known that this is the one and only night I root for Nick Saban. Also, LSU is playing like shit. They better tighten up in the 2nd half.

p.s. lol florida.

russ Sep 27, 2008 11:21 PM

In before the next issue of Sports Illustrated features Saban, with big and bold BAMA'S BACK, on the cover. Dammit.

Lukage Sep 27, 2008 11:23 PM

Thank you SEC for putting Missouri into a very good spot right now.

Slash Sep 28, 2008 02:55 AM

Is it just me or is it whenever USC loses when they're ranked high that marks the start of all the upsets nationwide.

It looks like Oklahoma will be sitting number one with LSU sitting at number 2 after Florida and Georgias loss.

I expect Oregon to be sitting around 23 or 24 with USC dropping to probably 9 or 10. Florida will drop to 8 and I think Georgia will be sitting around 6.

IdleChill Sep 28, 2008 02:01 PM

I think Florida will fall further than that; Georgia around 6 sounds about right, though.

All I can say as an LSU fan is bring on Bama!

russ Sep 28, 2008 05:20 PM

Idle: call Les Miles (I know you have him on speed dial) and tell him that Alabama's quarterback can't throw the ball accurately more than 25 yards down the field. He might already know this, but you can never be too sure.

nazpyro Sep 30, 2008 03:54 PM

On the lower tiers of college football, my MD team is rocking after the rough Middle Tennessee State weekend, dropping both Cal and Clemson and now surprisingly contending in the weak sauce ACC. And now my Terps are on the verge of entering the AP poll. Let's check back after the Wake Forest game.

Lukage Oct 5, 2008 03:47 PM

Bah, I figured that after a so-so performance by Alabama, we'd jump to #2. I'll take that top spot if Texas beats Oklahoma next week before we roll into town.

Texas Tech managed to get lucky in the end. They score the first touchdown in OT and have their extra point blocked. Nebraska's QB tried to make a play but ended up throwing an interception and ending the ball game.

I'm pissed that I didn't get to see the Texas vs. Oklahoma game. ESPN kept scrolling down at the bottom: If you live here, here, or here...you can get the game on ESPN360.com. Three places in the world where ABC wasn't broadcasting the game, and I had to be living in one of them. What did they show instead? Rutgers vs. Cincinnati from the Big East Network.

LSU shouldn't even be in the top 10 after this game. If they don't go down to at least 13 or 14 after this game, then something is very wrong with the polls.

I've not been able to watch a game in 3 weeks, for various reasons, and apparently Auburn has been even more terrible than usual during those three weeks. I hope they figure out that the point of the sport is to not be terrible, at least before they play Alabama.

I'm actually surprised because I've always seen Auburn as a tough team to beat. However, the last three games ended really close for them.

Rich Rod didn't make adjustments for the 2nd half, but Paterno did. Did anyone see that injury that happened to the Oklahoma player today? The way his arm bent and twisted was just sick!

I would hope Penn State would hop over Alabama in the polls tomorrow. What I'm really looking forward to is Texas Tech's schedule. Their next 4 games are all against ranked teams, including current #1 ranked Texas. If they can pull that off, I don't think anyone could stop them.

Good lord, I can't believe Texas Tech almost blew that game. Also, first time I've seen two unsportsmanlike penalties resulting in Texas Tech kicking off from the 7 and a half yard line.

Congrats to Texas Tech though. Way to pull it out in the end.

Also, anyone happen to see the game winning play for Purdue against Michigan? Freaking beautiful hook and lateral for the TD.

To quote Bobby Knight's prediction: "Michigan needs to win this game, or else their stadium is going to explode."

What in the hell happened to LSU?

SuperSonic Dec 3, 2008 03:13 AM

I could be asking the same question to a lot of other teams, Texas Tech in particular. I honestly thought they'd go all the way after defeating Texas (and I still consider that to be the best game I've seen this year), and then they go and get raped by Oklahoma.

As far as LSU goes, I'll give them this: their first three losses were all to ranked teams. They managed to give the #1 team in the nation some trouble and managed to send it into overtime so I applaud them for their efforts there. However, after last year it's no surprise that I view LSU as overrated and maybe that was finally realized by the rest of the country this year. Who am I kidding, the only reason I considered LSU overrated is because of the BCS rankings.

Another team I'd have to ask "What in the hell happened?" would have to be Michigan. We all know the answer to that: Rich Rodriguez. I feel sorry for the Wolverine fans because of what happened to them this year. I'll be surprised if he keeps his job up there. The commentators say things like "Give him time to recruit" and "Michigan has no talent for Rich to work with", however the fact is that Michigan isn't even going to a bowl this year and the Wolverine fans are pissed.

Well, I'm definitely going to be keeping a stronger eye (if there is such a thing) on Oregon. Chip Kelly will be replacing Bellotti as HC and If you've seen Kelly's offense...its scary awesome. Some of the plays during the Beavers/Ducks civil war were beautiful.

So what are ya'll seeing. Oklahoma vs. Florida for the NC game?

Whichever SEC team survives Saturday, which I suspect will be Florida, will win the big game in January. Luckily for Big Ten fans, they won't be doing it against OSU for the third straight year.

It was nice to see LSU actually end the season on an awesome note.

And who else saw the Oregon St./Pitt game. That was just...b-a-d....
