favourite kind of alcohol
Because many studies consider it healthy, if do prefer red wine when I have a choice of colour; otherwise, I prefer white for the sweeter taste.
It took me so long to appreciate beer (and I started with Canadian :p) that I never really had the occasion to taste it fully. What kind of alcohol do you prefer? PS to smartass chemists: i mean ethanol |
I grew up on beer and it's basically against the law not to drink beer in Australia, but I have been known to have my fair share of spirits and hard liquors from time to time.
|
I used to be very partial to rum but there was an incident and I can't stomach it anymore. Never could really stand the taste of beer so that's out. However Tequila I'm more than happy to partake of.
|
Beer, and I'm not all that picky, but I prefer Guinness, Blue Moon or Shiner. I have never really cared enough to become much of a beer connoisseur, though I do like buying random imports from time to time just to taste what's out there.
|
It's usually beer for me. My favourite types are stouts and ambers. Brown beer is sometimes pretty good too. As for harder stuff, the only type I buy is cognac. if I'm offered a shot of something else I'll usually take it, but cognac is by far my favorite.

I prefer Absinthe when I am playing drinking games with other members of my intellectual elite group or vodka mixed with strawberry juice (which is not as exciting as with absinthe but it's okay if you don't have too much time, if you know what I mean). I also like vine because in casual places like restaurants (good restaurants) and casinos, you cannot drink Absinthe or vodka mixed with pineapple juice, so look, it is all about being versatile |
Orange/Blue Curacao. I have a ton of drink recipes that use it, and I just absolutely love the stuff!
That, and Rootbeer Schnapps. Making Rootbeer floats with it is nice. |
Whiskey and beer.
|
Buddy showed me jager/gold schlager combos, and I'm in love. I can shoot those with jager bombs all night long.
|
While I can drink beer if I have to (friends want to go to a beer-only bar), I prefer the hard stuff. Vodka, Rum, Whiskey. Mostly because you can almost always find something to mix with it. Nooooo tequila though. I am not a fan of tequila.
|
I've been a wild rover for many's a year and I spent all me money on whiskey and beer
That's basically it. I'm known for Jameson on the rocks or a heavy beer of some sort (always trying out new ones). I'm really not a fan of mixed drinks unless they have whiskey in them. Jager bombs are usually a good time though. |

Boogie Bots FTW yo |
I'm a gin fiend myself. I can drink gin and tonic like it's water all night long. Apart from that I've a preference for whiskey. If it's single malt then it's fine by itself. Otherwise coke does it well (then again, coke and any spirit does well).
I prefer white wine to any other, but I've been known to drink red from time to time. And as for beer, anything goes if it's all that's available. Basically I'm an alcohol slag. |
I'm saddened by this not being a multiple choice poll. I like my beer, either Finnish cheap watery bar lager or dark Real-European beer, it doesn't really matter. But as much as that, I like red wine, when I can afford a decent bottle of it. Or a glass of house red at a jazz bar, or something like that.
I'm not that much into the hard stuff, but won't unfortunately say no to any sort of flavoured ethanol. See what I did there. |
My favourite drink when I'm out at a pub is a well mixed Manhattan. The catch there being that it's damn near impossible to get a decent fucking Manhaattan anymore. Ridiculous.
I do, however, work at an award winning brewpub and have been learning from the brewmaster (if I get to level 20, I learn real magic) so I have a very healthy love for beer. I have a special love for stouts, especially the really dark variety (see Dortmunders, Guinness or Guinness knock-offs, chocolate stout etc), red ales, and well done fruit ales. Though my ultimate weakness is mead. I can't stop drinking the stuff. It is absolute ambrosia to me. In terms of wines, I know my stuff fairly well, but I'm no sommelier. My personal favourites are a well done Pinot Noir, preferably from the Burgundy region in France (see the problem with loving Manhattans), or a Shiraz. My palate doesn't pick up on whites as well, though I'm fairly good with ice wines, Pinot Gris (really more of a light red) and Pinot Blanc. The problem with Noir is that when it's less than fantastic, it's shit. But when it's at its best, it is the best in the world. Incredibly lively flavour. Now, if I'm just kicking around the house, I tend to be a gin and lime drinker. Though I also have a love for northern Irish whiskey. Especially Jura Superstition. And my love for Absinthe is pretty well known around here. In short: Make your poll multi-selection. |
Or at least add an 'I'll take any and all of the above please!' option to it. :p
|
I prefer hard liquor to anything else, and I prefer scotch, gin, and tequila. Gin and tonics are the standby, usually, unless I'm ordering a margarita. I'm recently in love with something called a "snake bite": about 60/40 tequila and Rosa's lime juice. Lovely. The scotch is usually on the rocks, though occasionally neat.
If I have to drink beer I generally only drink imports. If I have to drink wine I generally go with white or rosé, because reds give me an awful stomach ache. |
I've already confessed to being a lightweight; I don't think too much of getting drunk. It's okay once in a great while but otherwise I prefer to be in greater control.
Casual drinks are perfectly fine, however. I've grown a dislike for beer. A few brands are satisfactory, mostly the pale ales, but the rest don't do anything for me. I'm not much of a mixed drink person either, it's just too much fuss. What I like is the simple stuff, right from the bottle. A shot of vodka, rum, scotch or tequila. Give me a few of those and I'll be as happy as anyone else in the room. I'm seemingly immune to alcohol burn (I sampled a bit of straight absinthe and it wasn't as rough as some folk suggested) so downing the liquor straight works just fine for me. Mixing the alcohol first seems a tad pointless since it all mixes in the stomach anyhow. Last week, a couple friends invited me to tour the wine country of central New York along the Finger Lakes. I only like sweeter wines, but I did find a few bottles that were worth purchase. Wine, for me, is a celebratory drink, so I purchased with that in mind. So I now have two bottles of blackberry mead wine, a muscat wine and two bottles of chocolate red in a makeshift rack inside my closet. Given a couple years to age, they'll be pretty good. I don't know much about wine but it's something I could probably get into. |
Alcohol, my permanent accessory
Alcohol, a party time necessity Alcohol, alternative to feeling like yourself O Alcohol, I still drink to your health. Asking me to pick a favorite drink is just plain silly. Lately it's been all White Russians and G&Ts, but I'm about due for a change. For the longest time I drank Scotch and nothing else (except a teaspoon of water), and before I started quoting the Big Lebowski and having Gin and Tonic mornings I was sampling different brews from all over the country. I can't pick a favorite, but the most common drink to see me with, whether when the sun first comes up or starts to set, is a hoppy concoction. |

Stuff's godly. I have a hard time passing it off as an all-time favourite given how inconsistent I am, but I adore Stroh. |
Far right bottle is the most current one I'm drinking. This picture makes me sad that the flask shochu is empty.

This is my baby.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...DSCF0972-1.jpg I don't fuck around, usually. I haven't perfected any concoctions yet (but I did make a nice jungle juice, once), but I have a whole lifetime of liver abuse to get that far. I do prefer the 151 proof version, however, to the Pure Death proof. Other than that, it is scientifically proven that beer tastes best after a hard day's work. Other than Miller High Life, I only drink wheat beers. My favorites are probably Blue Moon, that new Widmer Crimson, and Shock Top. |
|
I see that drinking with me has taught you nothing.

My favorite beer is Red Stripe Jamaican lager. Delicious. I also tend to drink Yeungling, as I live in PA and it's the best of the cheapass beers. For liqour I prefer gin, light rum and a good vodka (Grey Goose or Ketel One).
and don't forget - the liver is evil and must be punished. |

My favorite beer is Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale. Brewed in Southern California since '89 by a man who was fittingly born in a brewery, it's malty and almost sweet blend of hops molasses that goes great with a steak.
Stone Brewing Co., also from Southern California, brews some absolutely wonderful beers as well. Stone Ruination IPA is my second favorite brew. It's a bitter, hop-filled brew that just KILLS me. I would say that you ask Frank all about it but it's obvious that he knows shit about good beer. |
Now that doesn't count because it wasn't from last night's binge.
|
The only sort of alcohol I can really tolerate is beer, and even then I'm usually not that fond of it. If I'm out somewhere and have to order something, I'd prefer to get a Guinness, but if I'm just hanging out with some friends or whatever, I've found that I like PBR unlike pretty much every other person on earth. Realizing now that I actually like cheap beers more than most of the fancy stuff my dad and other friends tend to get, I regret not ever having tried IC Light while living in Pittsburgh.
Also, for some unknown reason, Yeungling would get me the wickedest indigestion and farts ever. |
Wine almost exclusively, as it's actually worthwhile beyond 'LET'S GET DERP DERPITY DERP-DERP LEGLESS'. Happens to be the only product that isn't overpriced in this country as well. Generally reds for me, shirazes, shiraz-cabs, pinot and cab-merlots, but dry rieslings (DRY), or a chardie on trusted recommendation I won't refuse.
People my own age still get all snideysuspenders when you order in company, though. You'd think they'd have largely come to their senses after secondary school, but no. He's drinking wine, he must be a Posh Hipster. As IF, so pretentious! TSK. Says the glare of the ill-kitted indie chick and dopey metalcunt beau. Bourbon and coke means you've just got polluted coke in your glass, people. |
There is nothing more wonderful than a post which is deeply and comically pretentious and yet handwavingly butthurt about the idea that this pretentiousness should be perceptible.
How dare you think me arrogant, you insolent lowborn bastard I'm glad that we finally got an Abrasive Wine Faggot in here, though. This thread was going nowhere. |
There's more to wine than than getting shitfaced, Pang. That's where beer and spirits stop.
|
Yes, there is also the NOSE
and the FLAVOUR and the HILARIOUS PRETENTIOUSNESS Look, I'm sorry you're an Abrasive Wine Guy and you can't appreciate things beneath your station, but it's nobody's fault but your own :( |
Okay there's been a misfire.
See, I don't care that others drink beer and mixers, but I do think it's a tad rich that Choosing Something Else leads to exactly the same display that winefaggots get charged with. Quote:
Eyes on the road, Pang! |
Well, you seem to care an awful lot, but we'll let that go.
Wine, as a beverage, is mostly harmless but it is unfortunately guilty-by-association due to Wine Culture. Wine Culture and Wine Appreciation and Wine Tasting and all the foppy, bemusing delusional industries that have grown up around people who want to get tipsy but can't admit they want to get tipsy but instead want to become culturally enriched by the ethanol they're sipping ever-so-delicately. So, as a Wine Guy, you immediately call all of these negative associations to mind. Sure, you can drink wine and not be That Douche Who Spends Every Summer Visiting French Vineyards, but the stereotype is there for a reason. What man why do I have to be a troll just because I'm not a Wine Guy  |
So SCENESTERS are pretty daggy to us, no matter the stripe.
I reckon LeHah would have saved me about ten minutes in this situation. |
Wait what?
|
Nvm, go back to that playdoh bust of Goldsmith
|
Its not playdoh, its goddamned sculpter's clay!

Blush wine is one of my favorites. It's so good and it gives me a pretty good buzz. The first drink I ever had was Jaegarmeister and Dr. Pepper, and it's my favorite liquor. I have two small dogs and I was going to name one Jaegar and the other one Meister but Zeph woouldn't let me. I named the boy Meister. :)

Hey just since it's on topic and junk... Has anyone heard of a movie called Sideways?
|
A decent film, if I've ever seen one, but really not much more than that. In short: Quaffable, but... far from transcendent.
|
I wouldn't even say it was quaffable. One of the few films I've turned off after half an hour of viewing. I've never had the misfortune of encountering 'wine people' in real life, but if they're even half as annoying as any character in that film...
|
Saw it in the cinema, thought it was a great yarn at the time. Gave it a spin a few months ago when I noticed a friend had the DVD. Couldn't bring myself to enjoy it anywhere near as much. For being one of those "obnoxious-pretentious-contentious-assholes-go-on-a-journey-that-mellows-them-out" flicks, it didn't have all that much character development.
Maybe I should read the book. I like wine. |

So to say I hate the movie would be a criminal understatement. |

Also, KWV Cabernet Sauvignon is good. Real good. |
I actually don't like beer. :eagletear: I love drinking coolers, though. That, and cocktails or mixed drinks. I prefer rum to vodka, though. Not exactly sure why.
|
Ok so far beer is in the lead. Why!? Because its the cheapest kind of alcohol there is? Sorry but any kind of beer, from natural ice to Guinness, it tastes the same and nasty to me. Is beer an acquired taste or something?
|
I had a long island ice tea one day and ever since i have been hooked on the shit. Its just so much booze and its just a fun drink to get screwed up on.. in fact im about 90% sure that as im typing this im drunk on it right now...good times.

Do you have NO palate? What the fuck is wrong with you? |
Yep I sure did. Guinness tastes similar to all other beers Ive tasted. Probably because its ALL BEER in the end. Best just to get a good cocktail for me.
|
My favourite kind of alcohol is wine (see below for those who are interested in what exactly), mostly because I grew up with culture and made it my part-time job. I also enjoy other beverages though, I'll rarely drink wine when I go out unless we all order a bottle, but otherwise I'll just stick to beer (Karmeliet, Leffe Blond, Jupiler, not really a Stella fan), which is something I got from my dad's side of the family I guess xD. Tequila is also nice, but when it comes to liquors I'm a huge fan of Limoncello, or a nice Calvados. I've had some bad experiences with wiskey and Jagermeister, so I tend to stay away from those, just the smell gives me unpleasant flashbacks.
As for what my wine preferences are, most of them are french (big surprise). I'm not really a fan of Bordeaux wines, although I would never say no to a bottle of Pomerol. The problem with Bordeaux is also that the prices are way too high. If you have a miracle year like 2005 was, you can still try to justify it, but last year was horrible, and the prices haven't really changed. If I had the money, I would drink nothing but Cotes-du-Rhone, even though they are expensive, you get excellent quality for the price you pay. Especially a Saint-Joseph or Hermitage (and the earlier and most recent Chateau-Neuf-du-Pape, not the 90s or 80s) is a joy to drink, and I don't mind splurging on special occasions. Bourgogne wines are also nice, but if you want the good stuff, you'll have to be willing to pay a lot of money, and not all prices are fair, so you'd be better off with a Cotes-du-Rhone. As for white wine, I can't stand sweet wines like a Rivesaltes or Sauternes, not even with a dessert, since they tend to ruin the flavor and searching for a good combination is not worth the time imo. If I do go for a dessert wine, banyuls rarely disappoints (we recently had an excellent Mas Blanc at work). Also not a big fan of chardonnay, since I like my white wine dry instead of fruity (although a grape like chasan, the combination of chardonnay and listan can be really nice), so I tend to go for sauvignon blanc. I find that the best place in France to get nice wine for little money is the Languedoc. The pricing is fair, the quality is good enough for everyday drinking, and there is a lot of variety to be found, so I usually go for Corbieres. They also use a large variety of grapes, a lot of them similar to grenache or cinsault (Cotes du Rhone grapes), so there is something for everyone to be found. For white wine, Montravel near Bergerac is a personal favourite, although it's a bit hard to get my hands on here. I don't have a lot of experience with New World wines, mostly since we don't get the supposedly good stuff, but I am a fan of Chile, especially red wines that use Carmenere, an old grape that isn't cultivated in France anymore, since it gives power to a wine, but stays soft enough to combine with a large variety of dishes. |

I do not like Guinness. I do not like 211 Steel Reserve. They are both shit and taste terrible.
But they are two different worlds of terrible. One is like filling my stomach with expanding foam until my intestines pour out of my body and I bleed to death, and the other is like driving my car 140 mph (like THAT will ever happen) and smashing into a brick wall. You, sir, deserve a diss. |

It's gotta be the spirits or the hard stuff, because I prefer having to drink less to get more if you know what I mean. Mainly because I have a bladder at the size of a pea with a combined high alcohol resistance.
I mostly resort to drinking beer anyway though because it's cheaper (don't like to waste too much money on drinking). I love dark beers like Guinness or Falcon Bayersk (Swedish beer). A question, there is a cocktail I drank once which I can't remember the name of. If I recall it right it was a vanilla tasting spirit (I think, I'm not sure since I forgot most of the evening, but it was clear and had a creamy yellowish colour) layered with blueberry soup and whipped cream. It was amazingly good. |
