Guitar Hero

Figured I'd make this thread because I absolutely love this game. It's my favorite music game because it caters to my style of music, and the controller rocks.

Feel free to post your accomplishments, comments, and any news on a sequel :P

I've been playing the game since Christmas, and I'm in love with it. I try to play an hour or two a day and I consider myself fairly decent (I can 5-star most of the songs on expert, except 4 non bonus, and maybe 3-4 bonus).

Dopefish Mar 2, 2006 07:32 PM

Hard is too hard for me after the first 5 songs. I learned to love Bark at the Moon thanks to this game. :)

Neogin Mar 2, 2006 07:41 PM

Fun game. First time I played it, I sucked though. Although I don't own a PS2, it's a fairly fun game.

Chaotic Mar 2, 2006 07:45 PM

Yeah, I've played it also. I've been meaning to get it. But they booted it up $10 from the original release price. I'll wait until it drops to get the game.

For not owning it, i'm not too bad either. I could play most songs in Hard and the majority on Medium.

Prinnydood Mar 2, 2006 08:16 PM

Got this game for my birthday a couple of weeks ago and its damna awesome. I've started Expert and gotten almost all 5 star ratings on hard...with the exception of some of the tougher ones. Great game here..hopefully a sequel comes out with a lot more songs/unlockables though.

I did here somewhere that a sequel was being worked on..even though it wasn't officially announced..in an interview maybe? I forget but does anyone else know about a possible sequel?

Newbie1234 Mar 3, 2006 08:16 PM

The Guitar Hero Thread!

:edgarrock:
The game's a breeze if you play music already. Being a piano and trumpet player, I just picked up this game last week, and finished it on Expert today... I have yet to 5 star all the songs, so hopefully it will last me another week.

Anyone else pick up this game? I think it's great, and it makes me want to pick up and play a real guitar (which I will definitely do in the coming months).

plutoknight Mar 3, 2006 09:18 PM

I love Guitar Hero. Best 80 dollar risk I'e ever taken (had I hated it, I could have netted around 120-130 bucks off eBay for it at the time).

I'm stuck on Expert, cant do Bark at the Moon (fail @95% or so each time) or Cowboys from Hell (fail at either 5%, 20% or 60%). I've never played any musical instrument longer than a week before, but man, Guitar Hero is fun.

I'm trying to hunt down the soundtrack (if one exists). Especially the song "Guitar Hero" (which, just a hunch, I think was created just for this game..lol. the Lyrics are effing hilarious). Great selection of music, fun as heck to play.

Gotta love it.

I haven't read about a sequel, but I think there will almost definitely be one considering the fairly obvious success of the game. Here's hoping I won't have to buy a new guitar for it.

plutoknight Mar 4, 2006 07:20 PM

Some EGM interview with the Guitar Hero dev's said that they are making plans for a sequel (they even talked about a bigger budget for more licensed music. Imagine "Stairway to Heaven"....*drools*).

Granted, this was the same interview in which the dev's answered the burning question:
Why doesnt the Guitar Hero Controller have a flamethrower.

......yeh.

Wall Feces Mar 6, 2006 09:49 PM

FUCKING AWESOME!!! 5 OR 6 GAMES WITHIN A YEAR? JESUS CHRIST! ORGASM!

ok, i'm done... sorry, you don't even know how much i'm on cloud-nine right now after reading that.

Amazing.

Lee-chan Mar 6, 2006 10:55 PM

I love music games but I've never been able to get into the guitar ones. That includes both Guitar Freaks and Guitar Heroes. It really sucks, because Heroes is definitely a sweet game and is EXACTLY what state-side music games should be.

...I just don't like handling the guitar controller, I guess. -_-;;

Slash Mar 7, 2006 12:15 AM

I love Guitar Hero. I did the whole Red Octane preorder and It came the day I guess it was supposed to be shipped. That was cool and I've always been into this game. I loved how they managed to fit Freezepop into the mix too.

DjMeas Mar 7, 2006 10:03 PM

Let's hope they throw in more Genres this time around ^_^
Looking very much forward to this!

My other wish would be a BETTER controller or some sort
of deluxe version of the controller... I mean the controller that
comes with it works... but it's just really flimsy ^_^''

Lee-chan Mar 7, 2006 10:05 PM

Speaking of which, has anyone's controller malfunctioned or the like? My friend's controller completely started flipping out the other day (for some reason, the "START" button kept registering even when it wasn't pressed).

6 versions in a year huh. Guess I'll have to get used to fingering.

Wait, wait...got a better one.

This is the most fingering I'll be doing this year, I'm sure.

Well there are SOME pretty jammin' country music songs out there.
Who knows, maybe they'll even manage to sneak a Johnny Cash song in.

I'd buy it for Cash.

Also, Dueling Banjos, anyone?

DjMeas Mar 8, 2006 12:21 AM

I wonder if they'll make a "Guitar Hero IIDX"

5 frets on top, and 5 more on the bottom of the board just for
solos!

Quote:

That'll be pretty sweet ^_^

Lord Jaroh Mar 8, 2006 09:33 AM

I'm pretty excited to hear that. I'm hoping for all of them to be as good as this one. I can see having the big 80's and 90's hair bands for one game, Metallica and all things heavy for another game, Classic Rock ala the Stones, Country making up a game, and god help us all, Nu-metal to satistfy all the young punks out there ;)

And yes, Dueling Banjos would rock.

Exactly. I honestly could not care less about some of these songs if I heard them on the radio, but the studio mixing done in this game is excellent. Bringing the guitar more into the front and in some cases improvising a bit over the original has really endeared me to the in-game versions, and even made me respect the originals, because it forced me to listen a lot more closely, and recognize things I had never noticed before.

I'm not even that far, really (Infected on hard is giving me trouble), but this game is made of delicious.

Nukkus Mar 10, 2006 06:35 AM

i just picked this up for $60 CAD, and i can't say i've ever played a better music game. it's just perfect. and it deserves a design award for the box too.

SailorDaravon Mar 10, 2006 11:42 PM

This game is AWESOME. I picked up a used copy (tilt sensor doesn't work) dirt cheap, something like $31 bucks, and it was totally worth it. Just got to Hard, I really need to practice hitting the Orange fret now =/. Also, anybody have any reccomendations for songs to practice pull-offs? I've got Hammer-ons down okay, but I can't do pull-offs if my life depended on it.

alkaline Mar 11, 2006 12:05 AM

I love Guitar Hero.

http://www.1up.com/flat/Kimi/gh7.jpg

When it came out, I made a blog talking about how Harmonix and RedOctane could make 20 sequels a week to this game and I wouldn't care. They're doing, what, six this year? Well. It's a start. My feelings for Guitar Hero are best summed up like this-

Quote:

Sporting one of the most well-rounded song lists in music game history, there is literally something for anyone who even remotely enjoys rock and roll. From classic metal, pop-punk favorites and even blues, Harmonix created the perfect blend of vintage and cutting-edge rock. I've been playing music games since what, 1997? I have never been more impressed than I have been with Guitar Hero.
GOTY 2005!

(( That would be me on the desk :X ))

I disagree. I've played piano for the majority of my life, but it still took weeks for the game to "click" with me.

But AFTER that, it was smooth sailing. :D I'm trying to 5-star all the Expert songs now...I'm almost done with the first 5 tiers, I think. That bend in the "Take Me Out" intro keeps breaking my combo though...I can't get the timing right to save my life.

Also, people who actually play guitar will probably stumble a bit on the easier levels. :P

Newbie1234 Mar 12, 2006 12:24 PM

It definitely helps a little at least, I mean, I read that some people have trouble using their pinky to press the Blue and Orange button, while for me there was almost no problem at all from the get go. The hardest technique for me to learn was actually alternate strumming, it's completely new to me. :D

Dhsu Mar 12, 2006 06:27 PM

Well, I think most people start out playing the game using the wrong hand position...that was most likely the problem in my case, so I had a really hard time shifting my hand to reach the orange key. Then I changed my hand to a position that would let me play with my fingers curved like on the piano, and shifting was pretty much not a problem anymore.

Strumming both up and down definitely takes some getting used to...it's still not completely natural for me. Fortunately, strumming down is enough to get you through the game, although with really tired arms. :)

Lord Jaroh Mar 13, 2006 02:08 AM

Yeah, I'm a down strummer, and I'm almost 1/2 way through Expert right now (although anly about 19 songs 5* on Hard...). I'm stuck on that damn solo in Megadeth's song...the last song in that group before I go on...

Sigh. Eventually I'll get the hang of power-ons/pull-offs...I hope.

Slash Mar 13, 2006 02:12 AM

I found a really easy song to practice Hammer-ons. Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinad. Theres quite the number in that song. I also found its helpful to strum after every third note or so too.

You should be able to down-strum every song except Cowboys from Hell & Bark at the Moon, as that's what I did on my first play through. However, if you want to get those 5 stars on Expert mode, alternate strumming helps A LOT for maintaining a good rhythm.

Keero Mar 13, 2006 12:19 PM

Wow i hear alot of people talking about this. OMG I feel like buying it now. I am so pumped. Were is the cheapest place online I can get a guitar controller?

Lord Jaroh Mar 13, 2006 12:52 PM

From Red Octane themselves. Good luck, they seem to be in short supply everywhere.

Keero Mar 13, 2006 04:07 PM

nvm..i found ebay. Its waaayyy cheaper than RedOctane. But how much fun can you really get out of it. Cuz I see it like a stepmania keyboard with one extra button and new songs, and a new interface...
On the other hand DDR is feet...
DDR is probaly the only game that can help you out in life.

It's a really fun game, and should last you quite awhile. Even after you beat it on Expert mode, you will still want to get 5 stars on all of them. You'll also probably want to get 5 stars on all the Hard mode songs, as some play noticeably differently than Expert, so it's like playing a different song.

There are also 17 bonus tracks, though most cannot hold a candle to the main 30 songs, some are still pretty good.

Well, there is the small matter of the music. I mean, the rock star aspect of it is how they're getting so many units sold in the first place. I honestly couldn't care less about DDR, Beatmania, et cetera so on and so forth soundtracks. These licensed track covers are great fun, though.

Lord Jaroh Mar 13, 2006 05:58 PM

Yeah, there's just something to be said about wailing on a guitar to Bark at the Moon, rather than looking very...odd..."dancing" to DDR. :)

Oh well cool then. That would be a cool game to add to my music game collection. So i'll give it a shot.

Drakken Mar 13, 2006 08:05 PM

I looooove Guitar Hero. I'm listening to Frankenstein right now; such an awesome song. Crossroads is probably my favorite to play though, thanks to the great solo parts.

I've been playing Hard a lot recently; I worked on all my scores pretty seriously. Now I have to start seriously trying to 5-star all songs on Expert. I have 40/47 right now. I still need No One Knows (only cause I haven't played it in awhile), Texas Flood, Frankenstein, Bark at the Moon, and Cowboys from Hell. For bonus songs, I just need Cheat on the Church and The Breaking Wheel.

Can't wait for Guitar Hero 2. :)

Btw, for those who like competing, check out Scorehero.com. There are a lot of active players there; it's a pretty cool site.

I actually do better when I downstrum those songs. :D Usually I'll strum down for a while to get into the groove, then switch to alternate strumming when I'm comfortable with it.

As for hammer-ons and pull-offs...I usually don't bother with them. :P I find it easier to just lift my fingers. I guess I'll have to learn sooner or later, though...it seems like the last part of the Bark at the Moon solo is pretty much impossible without them. I can't even read that part yet...

Neat site; too bad I'm too lazy to take pictures. :D

Edit: nevermind. That site FTW now. 5th place on Take Me Out - Easy, and I rarely played that song. :D

Shiny McShine Mar 15, 2006 02:09 PM

I absolutely love this game. I just beat it on expert last night for like the 3rd time (I don't actually own it so I was borrowing it from a friend for like the 3rd or 4th time) and it's still one of the best damn games I've ever played.

The music is like 99.9% perfect. No Metallica? Please.

Keero Mar 15, 2006 03:30 PM

I probly will get the game when I have more than enough money. I only play DDR because It's fun and it benifits you.

But...pressing buttons on a guitar might look cool to some people. On the other hand...no. I still wan't a test run on the game though! n.n

stepmania plz.

pop'n music, beatmania, drumania, and guitar freaks looks like a waste of time. But on the positive side, I still would like to try them and give them a test run :)

Rollins Apr 4, 2006 04:14 PM

If we had to play games for fun *and* if it benefits us, I'd probably have to quit playing all games in general, haha.

In any case, I love Guitar Hero. It's an extremely well done music game. Good music selection, simple to learn but hard to master, and definitely a fun party game, especially if you can get two guitars going. I still need to learn those advanced techniques, which do make a whole lot of sense, I just lack the patience to try it out.

So in other words every game is a waste of time to you then because you could just like walk places and it'd be equal to playing DDR.... I find Pop n Music to be more entertaining than DDR.

I am Guitar Hero.

I phoned Colonel Skills Saturday night and left a message on his machine. I wanked all over my guitar (sloppiest solo ever) and then said "friends don't let friends play guitar hero".

I am curious to play the game although I figure being a guitarist will make me rather jaded with the way the game controls. Being able to play better in real life than in the game might be frustrating.

Dhsu Apr 11, 2006 01:14 PM

You should definitely start in Hard Mode then. :)

Chaotic Apr 11, 2006 02:35 PM

I started in Hard Mode... Don't even play guitar...

But probably the easiest song to start off on Hard Mode is Take Me Out. Pretty easy song and they toss the pinky in every so often.

Kuhazan Apr 12, 2006 01:06 PM

it is beyond me why some company hasn't made a musical instrument instructional game... where it teaches you how to read the notes and everything... so your like actually able to play a real guitar or another instrument after getting good at it... heh

Lipid Apr 14, 2006 05:09 PM

Have had the game for a couple months and can finally complete Cowboys From Hell, Bark at the Moon, and Cheat the Church on expert with some consistency.

Best music game ever... someone needs to sync karaoke revolution, guitar heroes, and DDR one day. would be some spectacle to watch.

It's worth a look.

Anyway, has anyone seen this? There's a secret song in this game called Tripolette that is only unlockable through Action Replay, and someone posted a video of them playing it. It's FUCKING INSANE.

He's no doubt using the guitar, it's much better than the gamepad once you get a hang of it. The main riff looks beatable, but that solo.... shit... You'd have to memorize it, cause I can't imagine anyone playing that while actually reading it.

Slash Apr 20, 2006 09:19 PM

Trippolette should have been in the selection originally...who wants to go buy a Gameshark just for that ><

Chaotic Apr 22, 2006 02:37 AM

Hell, I already have an Action Replay. This is good for me then.

[edit] Alright, I booted up my Action Replay and got the code down to play *Trippolette. That's * is there, but it's a nice star...

Anyway, it's pretty easy on Medium, but it will begin to kill you on Hard. Especially during all those runs. And if you have no control with your pinky and the orange key, you're dead. >_<

*Trippolette replaces Guitar Hero in the song list.

Jonathan Ingram Apr 22, 2006 03:25 PM

Dammit, my PS2 won't read my CodeBreaker anymore :(

Dopefish May 4, 2006 06:32 PM

I'm slowly starting to get close to perfect on Bark at the Moon Medium. The dealbreaker has been the part at the end of the bridge with the hammer-ons.

Speaking of HOs, they're totally useless. I can strum the notes usually and I just can't get myself to practice hammer-ons.

Dhsu May 5, 2006 02:12 AM

I can see hammer-ons coming in handy at some point, but I think pull-offs aren't worth the trouble. Except maybe in the Expert "Bark at the Moon" solo...you kinda have to master both in order to do it right.

* "Psychobilly Freakout" by The Reverend Horton Heat
* "Strutter" by Kiss
* "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath
* "Who Was in My Room Last Night" by The Butthole Surfers
* "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks, as performed by Van Halen
* "YYZ" by Rush

Newbie1234 May 5, 2006 03:36 PM

Looks ok so far, I'll be more interested when they release the full list though.

DjMeas May 10, 2006 12:35 AM

I hope this 2nd release has Speed Mods ^_^

Or does the 1st game have speed mods?

(I was buying the RHCP CD and there were 2 guys
playing GH. Not sure what song because i couldn't
hear it, but the scrolling speed was rather fast.
Maybe it was the song though~)

Dopefish May 10, 2006 01:00 PM

RHCP has "Higher Ground" on Guitar Hero.

There are no "speed mods" for GH...the scrolling speed increases as you get into the higher difficulties, as does the number of notes.

DjMeas May 11, 2006 12:58 AM

Yea, that's what i noticed when playing..

maybe it was just me though, but it really did look like
the song was scrolling faster than it normally does.

Prinnydood May 11, 2006 04:05 PM

Yea higher difficulty=faster scrolling...Kinda suprised they're releasing GH2 so soon...surprised..but excited!

Yea i just expected that they were going to release some of those "expansion pack" things that were mentioned first...Of course I'm very happy they're releasing 2 so soon dont get me wrong =D...Those new multiplayer features sound nice(different versions of guitar to play like bass or lead)..eager to hear of what's new in single player.

Dhsu May 12, 2006 09:16 PM

Having Frequency/Amplitude-style multiplayer in Guitar Hero would be so friggin' hot.

Dopefish May 13, 2006 01:24 AM

Leave the Amplitude gameplay for Amplitude 2 please. :)

DjMeas May 15, 2006 09:15 AM

I really hope they are going to put a lot of 3 button chords!

From the gamespot coverage at E3, the guy said 3 button
chords weren't too present but usually were played to finish
up a song. He was playing in Hard i think, so here's hoping
to some really technical expert charts ^____^

Servilonus Jun 13, 2006 10:56 PM

I've been pretty addicted to this game as of late.

I've played through every difficulty of career mode, and I've been able to beat everything EXCEPT Cowboys from Hell and Bark at the Moon on Expert.

As a guitar player I think Cowboys from Hell on Expert is more difficult than actually playing the song on guitar :guitarist:

The things I have the most difficulty with are long, fast, repeated rhythms, and the solos (which for the most part, I breeze by with the star power I've saved up) Some parts of the solos simply move too fast for me to even comprehend.

For the most part, on Medium, I would get low to high 90s in notes hit, mid 80s to mid 90s in hard, and mid 70s to mid 90s on expert.

What's with the focus on "Boston Rock" in the bonus songs? I see that mentioned alot in the loading screens for some of them. Of the bonus songs, I really like Cheat on the Church. Does anyone know if there is any Graveyard BBQ stuff floating about? I'd like to hear some of thier stuff.

I actually like alot of the covers in the featured songs better than the originals. Mostly the classic rock stuff, as the guitar becomes much more...hard rock sounding, especially stuff like Crossroads and Spanish Castle Magic. Seeing as how the game only features Gibson Guitars, I wonder if the covers were made using only Gibsons as well (which would impact the sound in Crossroads, for example, because Clapton uses Fenders).

My friend suggested a neat feature I'd like to see implimented, which is the ability to remove vocals from a song. I like most of the songs, but some I would like more without the singing. I find alot of the metal and classic rock singers are pretty good, but for the modern rock ones (Stellar for example), the singers sound kind of whiny and emo. (moreso than the original)

Overall, I think this is a really enjoyable game. It works for alot of skill levels, like my friend who only plays on easy for fun, so he can hear the song and get 100%, whereas I would play on hard or expert for leisure. I would totally like to see lots more sequels of this game released. Each with a different genre would be cool, like metal for one, classic rock for another, modern rock, etc. :edgarrock:

Prinnydood Jun 14, 2006 06:15 AM

Yea I'd like to see the use of 3 note chords more often. They've gotta add some variation to the note types/combinations for the sequel so dont see why they wouldn't do this. Ah well guess we'll wait and see.

RacinReaver Jun 14, 2006 03:59 PM

I was actually wondering about how they went about doing the covers for some of the songs. I mean, some of the vocals sound way to close to be a cover band, so I was wondering how it might have been done. When tracks are originally recorded, they have all the parts recorded individually, right? So for the game, did they just redub their own custom guitar track to go along with the rest of the music?

Being familiar for most of the songs, I can say that all the vocals were re-done, some not as well, and some really well. I imagine that they'd try to get as close to the original singers as possible than to half ass it. All the recordings are completely original, and as far as I know, do not use anything from the original versions. There's credits to the people who did the covers in the manual I believe.

Slash Jun 18, 2006 12:33 PM

The only song I remember not being a cover was the RHCP one because their sound is ALOT different and hard to duplicate.

It's worth a look.

Anyway, has anyone seen this? There's a secret song in this game called Tripolette that is only unlockable through Action Replay, and someone posted a video of them playing it. It's FUCKING INSANE.

EDIT - CORRECT LINK

Enjoy that.

I was wondering why there was no prog-rock in there, sad that it turns out that there is.

No, that's most certainly a cover.

wvlfpvp Jun 18, 2006 09:43 PM

Yeah. That's so not Antony Keidis singing, plus the guitar tone is slightly different. I mean, that's about the only RHCP song one of our local stations played for years, so I kinda had it drilled into my head.

Servilonus Jun 19, 2006 10:58 PM

I finally beat Bark at the Moon on Expert yesterday. Luck was all that got me there, really, and getting as much star power as I could. Needed to use the star power first after the last fast part in the first solo (the part where it runs back and forth up the neck, then goes out of control), and then tried to last as *long* as I could before using star power in the outro solo. When it ran out, I tried my damndest to finish and BARELY did, with my rock meter in the pulsing red. I swear if there had been 4 more notes I would have failed. (which I did before, I failed the song at 98% =( that was very discouraging)

Also, upon reading a gamefaq on it, I had not understood how to do hammer ons and pull offs until...yesterday. I don't remember the tutorial mentioning that black circled notes had to be picked and open white notes could be hammer on'd, pulled off. That helped tremendously with improving my scores in other songs.

(but for an integral game skill, I'm surprised I got through EVERY song on every difficulty except BATM without using hammer ons and pull offs. Just picked every note =/)

Actually..I learned the whole hammeron thing in the advanced tutorial

wvlfpvp Jun 20, 2006 05:38 PM

I figured it out myself. I remember wondering why I couldn't hammer on where it would make sense (I have some decent guitar skills . . . nothing fancy, but I understand stuff) and why some notes were white. Then I put two and two together. I think in texas flood.

Wow, some of those guys are really impressive, then. I can't wait to see what artists they cover in the next game (totally lollin' if there's a Prince one).

Lord Jaroh Jun 21, 2006 01:40 AM

Yeah, as far as I remember, the only songs that are from the original bands are the "extra" bonus songs. All others were covers (which is why if you read the titles of the songs as they start, they all say "Originally made famous by...").

That said, I'm hoping for some serious metal action in a few months. They have said that metal fans will be getting their dues, so that sounds nice to me.

watkinzez Jun 21, 2006 03:59 AM

Hmm.. maybe I should get this while the reduced release price is still in effect.

NovaX Jun 21, 2006 09:06 AM

Man, the whole Internet jerks off to this game and it's a piece. I've had it a day and I have done most of the "Expert" songs with 5 stars. As a guitarist I was hoping for a challenge at least, but no. It's boring and it's easy. Most of the song choices are shit, only the Fret-Burners and Face-Melters are any good.

I will hopefully be able to return it tomorrow.

Dhsu Jun 21, 2006 09:35 AM

I'd like some proof of this because I find it VERY hard to believe. Most guitar players have a HARDER time with this game than others. I'd be interested in a video of a 5-star "Bark at the Moon" in particular (or at least a photo of your score).

Well, you're in the extreme minority, since just about every other owner of this game has had a great time with it. Guitarists I know went into this game cocky and then found themselves having a very hard time.

SuperDK Jun 21, 2006 02:41 PM

There are lots of people (mainly the Bemani guys) that don't like this game. But who cares really. It's a fun game. If you don't like it, then whatever.

Crap, when I got this game, my brother was pretty amazed and got another copy of it (for the guitar) just so we could play multiplayer.

Kabukibear Jun 25, 2006 12:29 PM

You can use gameshark 2 to play trippolette as well. It's pretty tough. I have a rule about not using star power but that's the one song I need to use it to pass. I can only get about 80% of the notes on expert and 3 stars.

Don't forget there's also the other secret song Graveyard Shift. I hate that one though, it's totally gay.

I play the guitar as well and sure, I beat all the songs in about a day and 5 starred most of them a little after that but it's still fun to play.

Anyway, here's my BatM score.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-...GGOBZ-batm.jpg

wvlfpvp Jun 25, 2006 02:30 PM

So, is there any way to unlock the sekrit songs without using a thingy?

Kabukibear Jun 25, 2006 03:44 PM

nope. there's no other way.

wvlfpvp Jun 25, 2006 03:49 PM

That's bullshit. WE NEED PROG. AND RUSH BY THEMSELVES DON'T COUNT.

Also: anyone else notice that every single song is in 4/4?

RacinReaver Jun 26, 2006 09:51 PM

Isn't that what almost all rock is in?

wvlfpvp Jun 26, 2006 09:57 PM

Sadly. System of a Down could be better if they'd get the hell out of 4/4 time.

Servilonus Jun 27, 2006 08:33 AM

Yes, more prog indeed. I'd like to see what any Dream Theater song on expert would be like. Had you not insta-failed, you'd fail at nine minutes, where you'd be too pissed to continue, because it was only 50% done.

wvlfpvp Jun 27, 2006 06:18 PM

There's easier prog than Dream Theater. King Crimson anyone?

Servilonus Jun 27, 2006 08:46 PM

Well yeah...I was just saying IF they had Dream Theater in there. Actually, 21st Century Schizoid man would be a really fun song to play on expert methinks (besides the noise solo)

I don't think they'd pick anything so far out of the social consiousness of music like King Crimson though (though I'd love to see it) Where I could possibly see them putting a Dream Theater song in due to current popularity, I doubt were really gonna get much more prog than YYZ on GH2. I just hope they don't put too much popular modern rock in.

I've gotten 5 stars on 15 of the songs on expert. The rest I have 4 stars besides Texas Flood, Frankenstein, Cowboys From Hell, and Bark at the Moon. Texas Flood I can never get that high of a multiplier on as I'll keep missing notes. Just getting through the solos on the others is mostly hindering me from doing much other than just passing them.

wvlfpvp Jun 28, 2006 03:27 PM

Oy. I totally suck at anything using all five buttons. At leat partly because I've trained my fingers that blue is ALWAYS my pinky, so when i position shift, sometimes I find myself hitting the orange one instead of blue. It's awful.

Servilonus Jun 29, 2006 10:50 AM

When I first started playing on medium, I tried that too, to not position shift at all and always stay i-m-r-p was g-r-y-b, but it didn't really work out that well once I moved to hard (I tried to move my pinky out to orange and then quickly move back, but it didn't really work). Even in that configuration, having to hit a red-blue chord with your middle finger and pinky is kind of awkward. I move as the song dictates really, using MOSTLY three fingers unless there is alot of green to orange or blue or consecutive green yellow red blue, or anything like that. Actually, I find that the little indicator on yellow helps alot to place yourself. But after awhile I can go back to the other notes from any note from just being used to the aritmatic distance between the "frets", sorta like real guitar.

I was at my friend's house yesterday and played BaTM on Expert, and I failed at 99%, it was pretty lol. Not only was it 99%, it was the LAST NOTE. I missed the last note and that failed me. I really wish I had video of it though, I don't think that's ever going to happen again. If I hadn't already beaten the song though, I think I'd be pretty pissed.

wvlfpvp Jun 29, 2006 05:30 PM

I guess I just need to continue working on "FraKtured" in real life so I can get better at fake guitar.

I'm getting there.

deadally Jul 23, 2006 10:19 PM

I am LOVING this game. Awesome awesome awesome!

I am having one problem. Since I've had to use my pinky, my wrist has been getting extremely sore after an extended session (I lose track of time, so I can't give a specific amount of time). I'm wondering if this is a natural progression and will eventually go away or whether I'm genuinely doing damage to myself. It goes away maybe 10 or 15 minutes afterward.

Hard mode...sometime I'll be very good

And your music does not have to leave common time to be interesting, pup. System of a Down is one of the few bands that deviate from the formula, anyway. Take a look at question!

Blast! It's a blast, fellows! Welcome back GFF!

Lord Jaroh Jul 24, 2006 01:20 AM

I know when I first started playing (and I don't play a guitar), my wrist would get quite sore after an hour or so of playing. I would play a bit past that, to build up my tolerance some, and now I can play for 6 or 7 hours without feeling anything.

Heh, still have 3 songs to go on expert...maybe someday. I can't wait for the second one though, and am expecting some great music on it. Hopefully some Metallica and GnR makes its presence known in the game.

Korosuke Jul 24, 2006 06:30 PM

When is this even coming out? It should have Mars Volta in it.....

wvlfpvp Jul 24, 2006 07:03 PM

I've now figured out a song that NEEDS to be in there:

"Thunderstruck" by AC/DC. I don't even like AC/DC, but I'll be damned if that intro wouldn't be nice and fun.

Burp Jul 25, 2006 05:22 AM

Guitar Hero needs more prog, yeah, but not only Metal prog like DT... i love DT guys! but what about Rush? also... has anyone here knows Spiral Architect? they are really awesome, Insect is perfect for GH.

By the way... its seems that Kyle Rechsteiner (of Red Octane) announced a new GH game and ISNT GH2... ¿Guitar Hero G.H.O.UL.?

Dopefish Jul 31, 2006 11:38 AM

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/721/721965p1.html

The three newly-announced tracks are covers of Stone Temple Pilots' "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart, Anthrax's "Madhouse" and Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil".

Lord Jaroh Aug 1, 2006 12:21 AM

Damn, I was hoping that Motley Crue would get Live Wire or Kickstart My Heart rather than Shout at the Devil. Oh well, at least Motley is in there. I just hope that Metallica makes an appearance. *crosses fingers*

A couple GH clones for people who don't have the privilege of owning a copy of the game:

Game: Guitar Hero PC Clone (player)/Freetar Hero (editor)
Songs: http://www.antonstruyk.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=8

Game: Frets on Fire
Songs: http://frets.freenerd.org

Freetar has more features at the moment (e.g. HO/PO's) and supports MP3 (Frets on Fire is OGG only), but FoF supports guitar/background tracks and has an editor that is far more intuitive and easy to use. I've already completed a track of my own, in fact. ;)

Enjoy!

I vote that Guitar Hero be busted out at the next GFF meet.

Lord Jaroh Sep 2, 2006 01:28 PM

I am very happy now. Guitar Hero II will feature Guns 'N' Roses - Sweet Child of Mine. That'll be such a great song to play. Now all we need is some Metallica and it'll be complete... ;)

This game is such pure genius.

What would be incredible would be if they somehow developed a way for you to upload your own music and dynamically create the combination of buttons you'd need to press. It's very unlikely, but just thinking about it makes me salivate.

For those who don't, it's the theme song to Pulp Fiction. I hate to say theme song, but that's the best way to put it.

RacinReaver Sep 3, 2006 11:55 AM

Well, that's how it was used, it's not originally that. :(

(Pipeline would have also be totally rad if they decide to include another surf rock song sometime.)

Oh I know that, that's just an easier way to put it than "the song that you hear in Pulp Fiction with the fast guitar that isn't really the theme, but it's assosciated with the movie quite frequently." :)

Not sure if anyone's check out their official site, but they do have a short part of Misirlou. I understand they had to redo it, but am I the only one who's a *tiny* bit unhappy about the quality of the cover? I guess I'm just a pessimist :D

Newbie1234 Sep 25, 2006 04:53 PM

The quality of all the songs seemed pretty low, I'm almost certain that they'll all be plenty better ingame.

I'm totally looking forward to GH II just for the 3-4 fret chords!
This will take GH to a whole new level of difficulty and variety in play ^_^

Greykin Sep 26, 2006 10:12 PM

I just got this game, and I can't stop playing it! DX

I'm having trouble strumming up and down though, rather than just down. On a lot of the hard songs I have to strum up and down to make the faster notes, but it seems kinda of hard for me, don't know why.

Anywho......... they need to come up with some computer version so people can stick on some anime tracks ><!

RacinReaver Sep 26, 2006 11:21 PM

You know, that's actually one of the biggest comments I've heard about this game. How they're so happy that it's not just remixed j-pop crap being put into a rythm game and instead it's being marketed to us for once.

Hey, does anyone know if GH got released in Japan (I seem to remember hearing people in Europe getting it and loving it), and, if so, how it did compared to the US?

As someone who 5-starred everything except the last four in the last tier and 1 bonus song, hard mode doesn't seem harder, but Misrlou looks like it could very well be impossible on expert. I am definately looking forward to the challenges that await me :p

Apparently they raised the number of "Bonus Tracks" to 24. And they're supposed to be from more "Well Known" bands. This brings the total to 64 songs.

So I can hold out hope for a Strapping Young Lad song? EEEEEEEEEE!

Heh, "you suck" or "Far Beyond Metal"'d be awesome. But they'd have to raise the rating to Mature. Stupid censors.

Any idea on when they're going to announce those bonus songs (since we might actually have a clue what some of them are this time)?

The last thing I've read is that they want to keep it secret until release. but I'm sure as soon as "someone" gets their hands on it, the songs'll be posted with the quickness. I always check the official guitar hero forum for the latest information.

Gamevideos has a few videos up for GH2, but the one that caught my eye was Beast & The Harlot on expert.

A perfect play on this or Misirlou will signal the coming apocalypse. Why lie.

Wow, Misirlou looks downright insane. Beast and the Harlot looks like loads of fun. That guy who was playing in the video sucked.

The game is great but expert is way too fricken hard for no reason.

This is why I love GH2, the extreme fast/a lot of note solo are hard to do but yet easy if you take time to master it. The only two songs I can't pass is Cowboys from hell and Bark at the Moon on expert that is.

The game is still great and I still play it but GH2 is a nice remaster of it. Plus Izzy Spark kicks ass.

Ayos Nov 14, 2006 12:47 PM

Yeah well if you think expert is way too hard on GH1, wait til you get to the last two tiers on GH2, and the buckethead song you can unlock. Pure insanity.

FYI you can have Izzy in both GH1 and GH2.

Zio Nov 15, 2006 03:15 AM

Yeah Izzy kicks ass, that is why I am glad you don't have to buy them.

Actually Ayos, I find that GH2 is easier on expert.

What I love is the revamp of the money system. Any band can buy things and the money flows from each difficulty. Making you able to be able to buy EVERYTHING.

Anyway back to GH2 thread if need be.
