Shadow had his "material" moment with STH, now it's Sonic's turn. That is unless this game turns out superior to that game (which I would hope so considering Unleased AND Sonic Chronicles). Let's see were this game goes. |

They might be going Secret Rings sequel or Tongue-in-cheek. As in "none of my old fans will take me seriously, might as well make them laugh on the way out"

Seriously, with the shitty games they've been putting the Sonic name to recently, a picture of him holding a sword is what you're upset about? Because as well all know there's a deep and complex back story to the Sonic universe in which a sword would never feature.
|
Honestly Sonic with a sword is exactly what the fanbase wants, so I dunno what you guys are so upset about.
it's your pathetic lives |
Would Sega be a bad enough dude to make Shadow the Black Knight? And have him voiced by Martin Lawrence? That would be so zany. And would Tails be the princess? And would Big the Cat have the runs and cause a flash flood that brings back the monster from Sonic Adventure but not quite so see through? And would Robotnik be called Robotnik again instead of his current name which is Dr. Fucking Stupid Name? And would the game actually let you play as Sonic or will there be a new character that'd move really slow and cause cramps.
I am going to invest emotions into this game for sure. |
Ok.... what?
*sigh* I was reasonably hyped for Unleashed until the footage of Weresonic, and now Sega unleashes this hideous beast on the world (geddit? oh the hilarity). If this is their sorry excuse for a game that utilises the Wii Motion Plus, I'd rather they shove a sword on freaking Mario. At least he's *known* for doing every freaking activity under the sun. |
|
With the addition of a sword, it seems the game is trying to please both the original older genesis-era fans and the Sonic Adventure and beyond furry crowd at the same time. This can only end badly.

Soul Calibur 3 - No Areolas? |
You know what this game is probably going to be?
Sonic and the Secret Rings 2 It makes sense - Black Knight will most likely be Wii exclusive just like Secret Rings was (hence Nintendo Power getting the scoop). Secret Rings had a nearly 100% Arabian storybook setting - this will probably have a medieval storybook setting or at least something with medieval ties in its backdrop and design. Sonic was given an eternal flame on his chest, while Black Knight's gimmick will probably be the sword. It will most likely be Sonic as the only playable character just like Secret Rings was, with the core cast (Knuckles, Amy, Tails, Shadow, and Eggman) only playing different roles in the backdrop. And if any other characters are involved, it will probably be in the scope of extra playable minigames, also like Secret Rings. It's the only way Sonic with a sword fighting any kind of knight or someone that's not Eggman makes any sense, and Secret Rings style gameplay would cater directly to that. |
Well guess what... YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.
Press release: Quote:
|
Goddammit, a sequel to Secret Rings? Why?! Well, it says it will use both the wiimote and nunchuk which means you won't have to steer Sonic. If that's the case, this game is already better.
I'm not too hopeful about the music, though. |

I can't help but think Assassin's Creed when I look at that setting. It doesn't look that bad, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking Secret Rings and remember how much I was disappointed.
Who am I kidding? I'll buy this game because I'm a sucker for Sonic games. I know the concept seems rather, um...different but there's no way this can be the worst Sonic game ever. :eagletear: I have a really bad feeling about this game. |
The sad thing is that those screens wouldn't look too bad if this wasn't a Sonic game. I realize his name prints money from diehard fans like SuperSonic who somehow haven't had their souls crushed yet, but this might actually turn out decent if it was some character other than Sonic. Instead, it looks slow and clunky for a Sonic game.
Also, I know they've had a hard-on for rail grinding ever since Sonic Adventure, but sparks don't have to shoot up from every surface. |
Slow and clunky? Did you not watch the video, however brief it was? Plus it was confirmed not to be on rails anymore.
Still, I'm worried Sonic Team will make it a bitch to control... |
That's okay, people were shocked when they heard about a Mario RPG, too.
|
Quote:
Since the trailer was only 3 seconds long they very easily could've just taken shots of Sonic in the middle of a dash attack. That probably is what they did, considering one part was him hitting an enemy. |
I've stopped giving a damn about concepts Sega cooks up and started getting more worried on whether they will screw it up with bad gameplay design decisions. Sonic 06 and Genesis GBA port were ultimate examples of good ideas ruined by shitty coding, controls, and bad design as opposed to any "gimmick" making anyone cry, yet it's always the gimmicks that get attacked.

YouTube - Sonic & The Black Knight TGS Trailer
Bad music. Gameplay would look good if they showed more than three seconds of any one scene. |
Honestly, how do they manage to screw up a little worse every damn time? Sonic is one of the simplest platformer formulas ever conceived, and yet they always find a way. It's sort of impressive.
Time to sit back and wait for the next Rush game, since those still manage to be fun. |
Was that Crush 40 in the trailer? That honestly didn't sound bad. However, I would have preferred to see more gameplay as well.
|
Epic fail Sega...
They just don't get it. They're trying all these crazy stunts to make Sonic popular again when all they need to do is just get back to the basics of speeding through a deranged obstacle course. That was the Sonic I love as a kid, not what it's become lately. It's like they put this guy (Buzzed Bunny, if you've already seen the video) in charge of the series. |
For those of you who want to watch the trailer without agonizingly cheesy Crush 40 lyrics, SEGA went ahead and made the US trailer instrumental. Huh.

If I didn't know, there certainly would have been some irony on the next flick I caught.

Well clearly I don't, seeing as how I'm so close-minded. Obviously I need to be more open to experiences involving kids calling themselves DJ Sephiroth using cheap sequencing programmes to lay tired old drumloops and unbelievably dated synths under the string sections from Final Fantasy tunes.
Look kid, I'm sure your heart's in the right place and you're going to defend OCRemix until your fingers bleed but you're entirely missing my point now and the point I originally made. Someone said that the music for this Sonic game was going to have a Celtic feel and I made a joke that rather than the same old Enya-lite the Japs love plastering all over anything they want to sound Celtic in a computer game, as it's Sonic they'd probably put in some horrible late-90s dance music which, if you weren't such a close-minded ignoramous, you'd know had a lot of Celtic influence in the form of hacks like DJ Sakin dumping 808 drum loops on the music from Braveheart and calling it a tune. The music was universally derided by DJs and clubbers but stormed the charts, making it ideal for a Sonic game. See what I did there? My next comment was that on OCRemix there's a lot of tunes where some junior producer has taken a celtic feeling song from a game like Suikoden (Which is full of them) and added some wistful pan-pipes and a drum loop straight out of 1998 and called it a day. To anyone who's not a close-minded fool, this is old fashioned and basically crap. I never said everything on OCRemix was shit, some of the stuff on there is almost listenable in an ironicly amusing way. The problem here is that in leaping to defend some perceived slight against your website of preference, you've exposed your own musical ignorance and general inability to read and understand anything above the simplest and most basic of posts. I imagine you're an American which fair enough, puts you automatically five years behind the rest of the world in terms of dance music trends but to believe that the majority of the tripe that passes for dance remixes on OCRemix is in any way relevant to modern electronica and not at least ten years out of fashion is to almost wilfully ignorant. I appreciate that most of your contributors are far too young to be allowed out on their own at night and as such have to turn to the radio for inspiration which is never going to help and that probably explains why so much stuff they produce is such garbage but until you yourself have made the effort to find out what music trends are doing in the real world and experience some stuff that wasn't written by a 13 year old wiith thick glasses and Pikachu pajamas then you're in no position whatsoever to be making assumptions about other people's musical tastes or knowledge and you're doing a disservice to those very kids whose work you claim to be the head of evaluating. So stop being such a self-righteous little scrotum, learn to read people's posts properly and think before you post in future, ok? |
tl;dr
|
Holy shit, this guy is angry as hell, yet he doesn't have a clue, it's hilarious. He seriously thinks we just post original audio with FL drumloops on top, uses the same old lame assumptions (OCR iz teknoz!, everyone's American, everyone's 13 years old) and generic interweb putdowns like "kid", when most of our musicians are in their mid to late 20s and we have all types of music from an international community.
You have gotta be the biggest dumbass re: assumptions on OC ReMix that I've ever encountered, but you've made my day. Hahahaha! |
Well Shin, I'm glad you know so much about the site. Clearly your musical horizons are much broader than Larry's, despite the fact that he's the principal submissions evaluator and listens to thousands of VGM arrangements and source tunes every year.
You don't know anything about OC ReMix. You probably heard a handful of old remixes from 2000-2002 and assumed the entire library was like that - being the ignoramus that you are. We've posted everything from live jazz, gypsy solo guitar, piano sonatas, string quartet, New Age, ambient, and pop-rock to hip hop, Radiohead style alternative, heavy metal, ska, orchestral overture, and everything in between. The reason we have less-than-stellar arrangements created using drumloops is because those songs were largely submitted in the early days of the site, at a time when music technology was significantly less widespread and affordable. Electronic music was by far the easiest thing to make and in fact one of the ONLY things the majority of hobbyist musicians could really submit. Times are much different now - we get submissions in all genres and really don't post much "90s Eurodance" at all. If you listened to everything on our front page, you'd hear that. However, you're a close-minded idiot, ergo, you won't. |
okay just came here to say that this uh Shin character needs to take his foot out of his mouth and his head out of his ass before his spine explodes into thousands of tiny shards

you don't have to like ocr! i don't wanna attack anyone, but I do want to defend my work... |
Quote:
Likewise, OCR had a fair deal of dance music made in FL within the first few years of its founding. If you want to hate on that specifically, even though tens of thousands of people like it, fine, go ahead. But just don't try to paint our entire library as being only that kind of music, as our current selection of remixes is drastically different than it was in those early years. |
Maybe we ought to spend a little less time worrying about Shin's particular opinions and a little more time worrying about why your "Head Submissions Evaluator" is so ridiculously thin-skinned.
If people are allowed to hate things, then why should Liontamer flip out and call people "snobs with no taste"? |
If you get hated all the time, do you guys jump into any old random forum just to defend the site wherever? Liontamer has been posting here for a while, but the rest of you guys have joined specifically to object. That makes you guys look incredibly defensive, which in turn makes people think "Jeez if they're so up in arms about this maybe there's something to that criticism."
It'd also help to point out that Shin pulled a similar "I am a dance music afithianado" routine during the Super Audio Universal Showdown and created another semi-shitstorm over there. That still doesn't excuse getting incredibly butthurt because ONE PERSON on the INTERNET made a disparaging remark about your website, but I figured context couldn't hurt. Also dammit now that I'm thinking about this, I bet there's another 500-song torrent or two that I could download. :( |

Larry isn't thin-skinned at all, neither am I; but we'll call a spade a spade and get a good laugh out of it at the same time. We always love to hear absurd attacks and criticism of the site or the judges. The best is when we get completely opposite complaints, eg. people saying we don't post any techno or we don't post "real" techno, and are too biased towards non-techno music. :D
Anyway, like I said, this isn't an opinion issue, it's an issue of fact, and objectively speaking, OCR doesn't consist of 13-year olds making 90s eurodance with FL. The closest the site came to that was in the first few years it was around, since then the repertoire we've posted has been extraordinarily varied. |
Aw... Bleck thinks he can deal in silly. :)
|
Quote:
SCAMMED CLEVERED |
I don't think he was ever saying that it still has that problem, but you freely admit that the site started that way, and if that was the time during which you visited the site, you'd be pretty likely to use that as a stereotype for what you've heard there.
In before this entire thing gets spun off to the Sewers and any semblance of discussion left disappears forever. |
Yeah, about "facts"?
When a man starts a goddamn incident because some random shit-talking Englishman doesn't like his website, that's thin-skinned. Actions trump claims. You can't wipe the egg of your face by pretending it's not there. |
Quote:
|
Nah, the way Shin has been phrasing his posts, he's definitely painting OCR as it is now with that brush. If he hasn't visited the site in awhile or has only sampled a handful of tracks, that's not a basis to form a respectable opinion. It's like if I decided to criticize a website now for a design they used in 2003 when they've completely changed it since then. Doesn't make any sense.

I'm not actually ever even thinking about it. I'm actually laughing about how insignificant what you said is to me, it's really funny! Even though I don't even think about it! If I were thinking about it, which I'm not because I don't care, I'd be laughing because of how insignificant it actually is. So haha, joke's on you!", it gives the impression they're not quite-

A man telling a small lie about a website is "over the top"?
I can't imagine what kind of sheltered life you would have to lead for this — this! — to be the mind-rending provocation that pushes you to action. A bear on a pogo stick is "over the top". A human cannonball is "over the top". Jamming your head directly up your own ass is "over the top". Calling for an internet forum invasion!!! FOR THE LULZ is over the top. Telling a small lie? Not so much. |
It was not so much a small lie but an outright fabrication and even though we don't care because he is a stupid nub, we must point out the incorrect
but don't care like whatever |

Is there any more information on this... upcoming Sonic? Apologies, I couldn't find any information and this isn't first time Google failed me either. |

Do you plan to let up anytime soon or what? |
Hi guys!
Firstly, I have to say I'm flattered that so many of the good folks of OCRemix have taken the time to register here at Gamingforce to tell me they don't care about my opinion. If I had known that OCRemix was such a source of lulz, I might have registered there rather than here all those years ago and now it could be me coming here to tell a different me that I don't care about my opinion. Imagine the hilarity that would ensue from that little conversation eh? Secondly, whilst I thank you all for taking the time out to inform me that I am wrong in my assertion that every single tune on OCRemix is a piece of shit dance music effort made by a 13 year old on an Amiga, had you all and Mr Liontamer in particular bothered to read the tl;dr post I made a few pages back, you'll have seen that I never actually said that and was simply commenting that the dance music that is there is of a generally poor quality. I know it was a long post and reading that much text is probably tough for the kind of people who don't think that computer game music isn't quite niche enough already and are arrogant enough to believe they can improve on it (Not that I'm saying you aren't, a lot of vgm is really, really shit and it wouldn't take much to improve it) but if you're going to take the time to register here and tell me how wrong I am, I'd have thought you might have at least bothered to find out what I was saying that you were disagreeing with in the first place. I mean sure, I was probably insulting you, if you're one of the OCRemixers (OCRers? OMixers? What is it you kids call yourself anyway?) who specialises in dance music but it was more of a critique of the American electronica scene in general and as has been so rightly pointed out, it's not the first time I've made these broad statements here and previously to this, I've avoided incurring the wrath of the wider, American dance music community. So I'm afraid to say that you chaps seem to have had a wasted trip. That's not to say you're not welcome here of course. Gamingforce is always happy to welcome new members and as a highly diverse community, you're bound to find some like-minded folk to chat with and you never know, you might even find some other people here who like you, have spent the last 5 years perfecting the art of using really expensive computer programmes to create free-form jazz versions of One-Winged Angel or whatever it is you've all moved on to since the heady days of Fruity Loops and 90's Eurohouse. Welcome to Gamingforce guys, nice to meet you all. Have fun posting around but do take a bit of time to read a few posts here and there before you start posting yourselves. You'll notice we have certain expectations of our members in so far as reading other people's posts and framing coherant replies go but we're not ogres or anythng and as Liontamer has demonstrated, even someone with a minimal grasp of English can fit right in here for a long time before we notice what a tool they are. |

Hey guys, I'm from OCR too, and I just wanted to distance myself from the other OCR people who felt it was necessary to do a mini-forum raid because 'sum guy on teh intertubes sed sumthin bad bout ocr'.
So please, don't think all of us get butthurt that quickly, there's some rational people here as well. By all means, you should be able to hold a particular opinion of OCR (even if it's a bit misinformed) without half the site-staff coming to get you. Carry on. |

I think the major problem is this: I use to go to this forum for years. It was a great place. Then around the time of the "problems" due to bandwidth, etc, people here became super assholes. It came to the point that I left here, cause seriously, people like megalith around just being a dick to be a dick is no fun. Its so nice to see that there are still people around here like this, throwing around baseless opinions for reaction responses, then when people do register here to defend against those baseless opinions, they have to bust out the old tried and true "oh you joined to fight, stop caring". Anyway, just my opinion. Go back to your bickering.

Tails, now you know why i idled in the chat room and then left.
This behavior is just embarassing. For both sides. People are grasping at straws and their ugly sides are really coming out. Larry has done a lot for the community, he's not perfect and can still be trolled, but this thread is just straight up embarassing for everyone whos posted in it. This is disgusting behavior for both sides. People are entitled to their own opinions. However when their opinions are formed on fact that has changed (in this example ocremixes have improved in quality and number of genres) and yet they are still posting defending their original opinion, research is necessary not only for the op but for everyone who this tainted opinion has touched. Rather than stating that this fact has changed and presenting examples, mud was slung and you all fought like little sissy 12 year old girls. Bravo. The truth is nowadays OCRemix has standards so high that many good but not exceptional arrangements are rejected. For every song posted, a ridiculous number of arrangements were rejected. There is no more of this "drum loop over the original song" business and there hasn't been for years. Insisting this isn't the case is just adding insult to injury (lolz). Either way, many of you have shown a display of character and I can't say it's pretty. If I were a mod here i'd seperate this into two threads so that the original topic had a chance, or maybe just start over without the hate and mental retardation. It may be the internet, and it may be easy to troll or be rude to people, but that doesn't mean you should do it. I know what i'm saying is falling upon deaf ears but hopefully some of you try to be better people some day. For now, this behavior is appalling and heartbreaking to see from both sides. |

This looks like Secret Rings all over again, except this time every level will be the same generic castle stages instead of several different levels you have to replay 10 times to progress. Whoah, it's a good thing you summoned me with that magic spell, baby. Never you fear, Sonic is here, rending through badguys with a giant phallus so you never have to dirty your dainty little hands and challenge the traditional gender roles of my fan base (24 year olds).

Until the time that it is released it is the best 3D Sonic game yet.
|
After playing it for about 2 hours, I can say that the controls are much better than Secret Rings so this is already an improvement on the Wii. Instead of steering Sonic like a car, you use the joystick to move him and swing your sword with the WiiMote (like in Twilight Princess).
The music is pretty good too and they've brought back a couple of character's themes from past Sonic Adventure games. I'm having more fun with this game than I did with Unleashed or Chronicles. |
Got a 3.9 from IGN. Not a good source of reviews, but I'm curious to see how your opinion differs on the controls, SuperSonic. They seem to have very, very different opinion on them.
|
Eh. I'm hearing from a lot of people who have the game that this wasn't deserving of a 3.9.
6, or 7 maybe (7 is probably stretching it tremendously) - but definately not 3.9. HOWEVER Most people I know are teetering between saying that its something of a cross between Unleashed's day stages and Secret Rings in terms of fun factor (not in terms of gameplay, "meat", and consistency). The general consensus that I am hearing seems to be that Secret Rings was probably the better game as this one was definately meant and designed moreso with the kiddies in mind (hence the somewhat blatant "easy streak" the game sees to be exuding upon first play). The general problem seems to be that Secret Rings seems to have had more meat to it at the cost of wild and borked controls while Black Knight is easier to control/get the grasp of at the sake of sacrificing some of the intricate and complex aspects gameplay that Secret Rings seemed to bring (boss fights that are incredibly simple to beat with no real strategy for instance). Most I've talked to or gleaned across the net seem to find it somewhat enjoyable (keep in mind these are sonic fans that aren't so jaded that they can't see the forest for the trees so I never said these opinions weren't biased to some extent) and tend to agree that it's certainly not the awful and terrible miasma some Sonic games are expected to be nowadays (Sonic 06 comes to mind), but it does feel like it sacrificed a lot of itself in terms of trying one-up the previous one and wound up going in a not-necessarily-wrong but certainly odd-and-slightly-off-kilter direction in order to do so. If you're in the camp that liked Unleashed's day-stages, this will probably be just a notch below. If you didn't find anythng about Unleashed fun or if you were fair-to-midly on Secret Rings, then this is probably not the game for you. If you liked both to some degree, then it's probably worth a passing play just to see how it feels. I can see this game being very divided in terms of likes and dislikes as there's a lot of points to be made for both. I'd argue moreso than Unleashed. It's not a step in the right direction - it's "a step". If you translate that low Famitsu score to probably a low-to-midway-6, then I'd garner that they are probably a lot more "right" than IGN certainly would be. Take that for how you will. Personally, I will be waiting out for Sonic Rush 3 since (IMO) the handhelds have consistently held a much better record than the core games and spinoffs. SIDENOTE: The music in Black Knight is simply amazing, but that is par for the course of ANY Sonic game it seems. |
Quote:
In Black Knight, you just tilt the joystick. Old fashioned, but it works much better. To get Sonic to jump in Secret Rings, you had to hit the 2 button on the WiiMote and then thrust it forward to do a homing attack. This worked better than the back step, but sometimes it still had its problems. Thankfully, there was the option to hit the A button to cancel the jump and just drop straight down. Also, you had to hold the 2 button for a length of time to determine how high you wanted to jump. I remember this one part in the second level of Secret Rings where I kept dying over and over again. It was near the end, I was running around to the top and I kept encountering this cactus that you had to jump over. Now since the backstep was a problem and Sonic kept running forward and the jump had to be timed just right, it was a continuous pain in the ass. Eventually I gave up on the game, tried again the next day and ended up getting past it, ran for a few minutes, and reached the goal. Black Knight, just hit the A button to jump, A again to do a homing attack, and then A once more before you hit an enemy to cancel the attack and drop straight down. More responsive and I didn't once have a problem with it. Also in Secret Rings, you had to tilt the Wiimote left or right to shift Sonic in that direction while he's running. That sometimes didn't work fast enough when I needed it to. Black Knight, again the use of the joystick is easier and I didn't have a problem shifting Sonic. After 2 hours, then a break playing my dad in Wii Golf, then after another hour...I beat the game. It's a short single player game, however there are more levels this time around and I enjoyed it a lot more than some of the previous titles that have been put out. Unlike Unleashed, I actually want to go back and unlock stuff like the fan artwork and this one missing music track. I will say though, I hope there isn't a sequel for this type of game. While I feel giving Sonic a sword worked this time around, it's safe to say that it shouldn't become a repeated occurrence. |
From IGN: "Possibly designed by monkeys. Everything you've ever liked about Sonic games -- speed, great level designs -- is gone. Instead, you will crawl through stages and fight enemy after enemy, with waggle."
But I wonder what they would have said if Sonic was replaced by Link? They'd probably say he was moving too fast and there wasn't enough slowing down. I think Matt C. is a little too dependant on the main character's past, because the game looks fun and gorgeous (for a Wii game). Lots of games where you fight enemy after enemy with a Waggle got better scores on IGN (and rightfully so, for some of them). |
Yeah. Because we shouldn't at all take into account the history of a character.
Ever. |
Well, obviously that's an overstatement, and I accept that. Continuity is good, that's true. But the game should still be rated on how it is as a game, and not as a Sonic game.
I mean, its just not fair that Mario can make 15 games a year, but IGN rates them all 7.0 and up because of the Super Nintendo days. |
So you're saying that it's pretty good when compared to similarly simplistic, treacle-paced games with repetitive waggle-filled combat?
Damning with faint praise indeed. |
Deni's right, though. I can't really get behind the idea that it shouldn't have to be rated as a sonic game because it is a sonic game. Sonic isn't a hack n' slash title. It's a game about speed - that's why he's called Sonic.
What gets me is that while Sonic Team has been fucking around with gameplay styles (Heroes), control gimmicks (Seven Rings), ripping off God of War, trying to get us to accept Shadow into the canon, and generally ignoring the fans who started out with the franchise like twenty years ago while catering to the younger crowd who doesn't care about Sonic the Hedgehog, other development teams have gone and put actual innovation into their game design and turned out products like Mirror's Edge. Arguably not the best game ever, but still closer to what a Sonic title should be than anything Sonic Team's put out in a decade. I forgot where I was going with this. Ah! Yes, a return to a more classic, less gimmick-based control scheme is a step in the right direction, but a long shot from a cure for our dear old friend. A goddamn sword isn't going to help Sonic out anymore than an edgy black foil did. Sonic doesn't need more gimmicks, it needs to go back to its roots: Speed, creative level design, a camera that doesn't resent the player, and for the love of God if the characters are going to have to speak than kill off everyone who wasn't on a Genesis title. |
Quote:
Mario still ranks highly because it's still fantastic, and even most of its spin-offs are consistently good. Nostalgia is hardly boosting scores. |
Mario games are also competeing in a quite different market. Sonic on the 360 is up against hundreds of different games and IPs, many of which are a bit shit but some of which are really, really good. Your average Mario spin-off however, being on the Wii or DS is up against, well, a load of other Mario games, those terrible Imagine things a couple of lacklustre ports and Wii Fit/Sports/Play. This makes the Mario games look even better than they might already be as there's less stellar competition around.
If they only released Sonic games on a platform that had mainly Sonic games and a few other things that were for the most part a bit shit, I'm sure they'd score higher in reviwes. |
That doesn't explain why this Sonic game on the Wii sucks, though. The Wii library still has a terrible selection in a lot of genres-- with platformers, you have something like Super Mario Galaxy and de Blob and not much else. But here's another Sonic game, on the Wii (where there's the poor competition you're describing and saying would be influencing Mario reviews), and the Sonic game still gets slammed.
|
Maybe it's just not that fun, and Sonic gets bad press thanks to his recent games and unpleased hardcore fans. Too bad, that sucks. Better luck next time, though. :\ I'd still give SEGA the benefit of the doubt on this one for three reasons:
1) I never really followed the Sega/Sonic bandwagon back in the Genesis days, the Dreamcast days, or even the sucky recent-and-current gen jazz. I only really got into this world recently, so I refuse to give in to the popularly jaded opinion and believe it's already over. 2) I love Sonic. He's a likeable character, and I can't get enough of him. 3) Sonic Unleashed was not that bad; There were enough good things about it for me to think, "This isn't over." Also, I haven't played his recent 3D outings or even all of his handheld ventures, although I've already seen plenty of them to have formed some kind of perspective on them and the overall Sonic status at large. Overall, I'm not fatalistic about Sonic's status in the industry. Whether or not he succeeds or peters out is still yet to be decided, as SEGA still seems to be going strong. If I get too caught up in this deal of "Is Sonic dead yet," or "Should he be killed off already," I'll never hear the end of it. |
