Starcraft 2 - Now with more gratuitous pylon construction.

Here is the old thread.

Looks like it'll be coming out this year (December 3)!

I like how EB/Gamestop just randomly puts release dates on some games.

Obviously, this game will be divine, impossible not to be.

And I llike how people still care, as they've never been anywhere close (they being Blizzard) to any deadlines they've set. It won't happen.

Grundlefield Earth Jul 13, 2008 01:54 AM

You know for some reason I think they might actually get SC2 out by the end of the year. Don't know why I have that hunch with their record though.

Dyesan Jul 13, 2008 03:34 AM

Probably because the whole of Korea is waiting on the switch to their new national sport.

Kimchi Jul 13, 2008 07:07 AM

I find this stereotypical =( kekekeke? SCREW YOU FOR THINKING WE PLAY THIS GAME SINCE OUR PENIS SIZE IS 1 CM.

December my ass, more like next summer.

Apparently, Pros already got hard copy of the game that's unfinished. (Blizzard gave it during 2007 conference so they can start practicing SC2. How pathetic. )

Zergrinch Jul 13, 2008 07:42 AM

I'm also hoping for a December release in 2008, taking into account the fact that they've been working on this for quite a while, and have released information on the Zerg a few months back. Should be quite close to completion, except maybe for the balancing part.

Cheezeman3000 Jul 13, 2008 04:26 PM

They just announced Diablo III, I highly doubt they have THAT much more work to do on Starcraft at this point.

Chip Jul 14, 2008 06:10 AM

Were the system requirements announced yet? :o

K_ Takahashi Jul 17, 2008 06:37 PM

Probably nothing too INCREDIBLY high that no one will be able to play it because that means no $$$ for Blizzard.

SouthJag Jul 17, 2008 07:06 PM

I do believe they said the game would support DirectX 10, but not require it, which is good.

And yeah, the EB/GameStop release date is merely a placeholder. We're all hoping for a December release, but that date is a "tentative fall 2008/fiscal year 2008" marker.

Lukage Jul 18, 2008 06:43 PM

Valve Time - Valve Developer Community

Translate the release date there.

Dopefish Oct 11, 2008 02:08 PM

Here's a question for everyone: if Blizzard said jump to a bunch of fanboys, would they ask, "How high?" or just do it? Apparently, the answer is the latter.

I'm holding off on lambasting this until Blizzard or Kotaku clarifies what "three separate products" means. It sounds a little too boneheaded/moneygrubbing to be what people are quickly fearing and assuming.

EDIT
OK, this makes it sound a little more like an annual release thing.

They couldn't put all three campaigns onto 3 DVDs and box it normally? If the above stories are true, then it
looks like they just want more money.

Cheezeman3000 Oct 11, 2008 03:16 PM

Battle.net is no longer free apparently.

We asked about the timeline for the three StarCraft II games, using Valve's original prediction of shipping all three episodes of the Half-Life 2 episodes within a single year, but reality is that it will take more than more like three years. Pardo thought that was a great example and said, "It's a little bit similar to that in that it would be great if we could have them follow one year from one another; I think that's going to be our target, but certainly that's not a promise in any way. But I think that's going to be around the realm that we're going to be hoping for."
So...knowing Blizzard, that means we can expect to see the game some time around 2016?

SouthJag Oct 11, 2008 05:49 PM

The trilogy for Starcraft 2 isn't that big of a deal. It's essentially the game and two guaranteed expansion packs with way more content than a standard expansion pack. As far as the first release goes, according to the IGN interview the Protoss and Zerg will still be fully playable, they just won't have a dedicated single player campaign.

Zergrinch Oct 11, 2008 07:36 PM

Hah, man, this is going to create a backlash if true. I wonder if the trilogy will manage to break Spore's record of being the most pirated game in existence!

So what the fuck?

How the hell will the story even proceed than?

Protos and Zerg played significant part of the original story, now they are just going to take them out?

I say this is either total BS or Blizzard hates the storyline.

SouthJag Oct 15, 2008 07:58 PM

The first release is gonna be the Terran campaign, and it'll be longer than the original Starcraft. Starcraft's Terran campaign lasted what, 10 - 12 scenarios? Starcraft 2's Terran campaign will have 30+ scenarios.

In the IGN article, they said you'll still be able to play all three factions, that only the Terrans would receive an actual campaign is the difference. Personally, I like this idea because it fleshes out the individual faction campaigns and, essentially, guarantees two more expansion packs, additional content beyond just the normal 2 or 3 extra units, and extends the longevity of the game.

dagget Apr 11, 2010 10:03 AM

Bumpin this like what. Mainly cause they announced the collector's edition for this the other day.

http://www.411mania.com/game_article_pictures/12026.jpg

The Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty Collector's Edition comes with:

* The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game
* An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War(R) expansion set
* A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director's commentary, and more
* The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks
* StarCraft comic book issue #0, a prequel to the comic series
* A World of Warcraft(R) mini Thor in-game pet that can be applied to all World of Warcraft characters on a single Battle.net account
* Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit

Regular game will cost $59.99

Collector's Edition will net $99.99

Dyesan Apr 11, 2010 03:59 PM

I'll probably forgo all the extras and go with the regular game package when it's released. Do we have any lucky beta-testers here? Nothing on my three accounts :( The livestreams over at teamliquid.net are the only thing keeping me going.

Zergrinch Apr 11, 2010 09:00 PM

Man, the old thread was made in May 2007. It's been three years already.

Fortunately we should be seeing a release by the end of the summer!

Grundlefield Earth Apr 11, 2010 09:56 PM

lol Blizzard. So what is the timetable for the other two starcraft II's after the first Terran one comes out? Is it really like every year, or does that mean three more years once this one finally comes out. What is a Blizzard year anyway? 3 years?

I might wait until Diablo 3 (hopefully around April 2011!) until I get a new gaming computer, so I will probably pass on this for the time being.

Zergrinch Apr 11, 2010 11:31 PM

Well, I hope it won't take quite that long. Perhaps we can look at the time lag between Starcraft and Brood Wars, which is around six months.

If I am reading this correctly, the reason they've taken so long (development started in 2003) is to nail down the multiplayer balance aspects. Once Wings of Liberty is released, it shouldn't take as long to create the single-play campaign content (and campaigns are unbalanced anyway).

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Apr 12, 2010 04:59 AM

I think they're just trying to beat Too Human's record for most time spent in development for a single game.

Zergrinch Apr 12, 2010 06:44 AM

Ehhh, for that record, no one can ever beat Duke Nukem Forever

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Apr 12, 2010 07:23 AM

DNF can't have the record until it's actually released though, otherwise the record would be held by the computer game I decided to make when I was six and have yet to complete.

Too be fair though, I doubt Silicon Knights actually spent much more than a year working on Too Human, the other nine years were spent in court arguing over IPs and crappy engines.

Para Apr 14, 2010 10:05 PM

Got my invite today. I haven't really kept up with the beta so a lot of things were new to me once I got it up and running.

The game is incredibly fast paced... faster than SC in my opinion. Minerals fly in so fast sometimes you are half wondering what you can do with all of it but once you get accustomed, you'll probably have some build orders to handle the excess minerals. I had excess in comparison to the original SC.

I play Protoss so naturally when I first got SC2, I screamed MY LIFE FOR AIUR and played my first game as Protoss.
Someone else in another thread here mentioned how they did not like how the "You require more minerals" message was displayed on the left side. That I agree. I prefer the messages placed in the middle of the screen.

The beta comes with the option of playing against the AI alone so I did that first to get accustomed to new UI and tech trees. Also, in the beta, everything is done online so you had to create a custom game like you would in SC/WC series and then set the opposing slot as AI. When you start the game, there's a countdown of 10 seconds but it seems the countdown is supposedly in sync with Battle.net. My countdowns often go down in a manner where there is a slight out-of-sync that causes the client to go up a notch or down fast (10..9..8..7..6..5.4.5..4..321). Also as I go through the list of maps, it seems that you must down the maps from Blizzard as they were not pre-installed along with the client installation which I found a bit weird. The maps ranged from 1Mb to 4Mb in size as what I saw but I did not go through every map.

On the topic of game pacing, minerals, as mentioned earlier, are harvested faster than before thus it is a lot more natural to have a larger amount of harvesters working in the mineral field than you would be accustomed to in the original. There are also two vespene geysers at the starting location so pumping out gas is a lot easier if you have the resources to invest in both. Protoss Sentries cost 100 gas so depending on how many you want to pump out to complement your initial army, the extra gas may come in handy.

The AI was set to very easy by default... funny thing is that it was indeed very easy. No expansions, some tech but small standing army. Also when the computer knows that it is game over for it, the AI will say gg in chat.

For music and sound, initially I found it a bit difficult to hear some of the voices of my units when either clicked on them and when I gave them an order. I tried adjusting my volume but it did not seem to work very well. I am not sure what exactly was overshadowing the unit sounds but whatever it was, I just could not hear the voices very well. What I did hear was the music. Protoss initially only had 1 track so I expect more in the release. Terran has 5 tracks (excluding main theme which was mostly terran with a little protoss) while Zerg has 6 tracks.

Of course... all this is one first impression after 1 game so I expect my opinion to change somewhat as I play more.

Randi Apr 15, 2010 01:44 AM

damn you had to post all that huh i cant read all that jesus none of it was useful

Please tell me the AI also goes "GOGOGOEKEKEKEKE" if you don't start the match immediately upon setting one of the players as a computer.

Trigunnerz Apr 23, 2010 12:43 AM

Anyone know where I can manually download the patch? The bullshit Blizzard Downloader forces me to upload while downloading, killing my Internet speed.

Amazon.com is supposedly offering beta codes for people who pre-order Wings of Liberty.

Game releases on Tuesday. Blizzard treated us to a final "reward" an epic Starcraft 2 trailer:

Starcraft II - Ghosts of the Past

With all the money they'll pull in with Starcraft 2 and they already do with WoW, makes me wish ActiBlizz would make full length CG movies of both series.

VitaminZinc Jul 25, 2010 05:23 AM

Got mine pre-ordered. Can't wait!

Now if I could just get out of that habit of playing all RTS games like they were Sim City...

2 and a half year bump why? Expansion: Heart of the Swarm comes out in March.

Here's the opening Cinematic!

Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm Cinematic

Kinda wish we'd get another epic one like the Ghosts of the Past trailer closer to launch.

And here's a trailer that shows some of what's changed from Wings of Liberty to Heart of the Swarm

Heart of the Swarm New Features

time to get your Zerg Rush on.

Lukage Jan 23, 2013 03:34 AM

Widow mines OP. I'm still laughing at the fact that they can't make terran mech viable, even combining the armor, etc.
