Punch-Out for the Wii!
N-Europe: News: Animal Crossing & Punch-Out!! Wii Detailed

The problem with a potential Balance Board Punch-Out!! is that it will be hard for me to throw punches while staying on the board and maintaining the stance I want to keep in the game itself. Not to mention I'll have to fight the urge to step off the board and actually move around.
Still, a new Punch-Out!! would be nice to see. |
Woo! It's about time for another Punch Out!! I would spend hours playing Super Punch Out!! What the Wii Punch Out needs, though, other than somewhat cartoony graphics and simple gameplay is the same disregard for political correctness that it had in making PO!! and SPO!! The reason why the game was so fun wasn't only because you get to beat the shit out of stuff but also because you got to see how each character was colorful in his own unique sort of way. They lampooned everyone from the Japanese to the Italians.
I say they need to have stationary controls, like classic gamepad or GC controller and they MUST include a multiplayer function. The only con to the original two Punch Out games was the inability to beat the shit out of your friends too. The downside to playing a multiplayer match would be choosing characters, which would turn the game from a cartoony boxing game to a fighting game because I'm sure no one wants to beat each other using the exact same characters. It'd get old fast. I hope they don't feel obligated to make the game full 3D. Part of the charm of the original games was the cartoony graphics, and I'm not sure they'll be able to render that in similar style using 3D graphics. |

So essentially we have to buy Wii Fit or at least the balance board first, and then dick around with it to where we learn how to kill ourselves moving from and dodging punches. Not only this, the boxing game in Wii Sports was already sluggish and somewhat uncontrollable to begin with. But to tie those controls to an actual Punch Out!! game?
I'd like to say I'm excited, I really do. At the same time however, I smell another Power Glove fiasco in the making with all these peripherals involved. I hope to God there's some kind of alternate control method involved. If the peripherals actually made the gameplay smooth enough I wouldn't care, but I don't see it happening. |
It's going to take some getting used to on the Wii balance board. One of the things you're not supposed to do on the balance board is jump on it, so I hope the dodging and ducking doesn't require you to get off the board in order to dodge. If this is a game where I need to use quick movements to dodge, then that poor board is going to die real quick.
Since this seems to be a Nintendo exclusive, why not have Mario play the role of referee again? |
The boxing thing in Wii Fit is actually handled extremely well, so I hope (and kinda expect) it's based off that. It works with stepping off the board forward or backward, quite clever stuff really. When I played it I actually thought it would make a pretty decent full game, so if they handle it well, it could very well be something I'll get.

Hey, there's some conference in Japan and some video with lots of games in it (like 5 seconds of each game).
Video with lots of games in it. Images taken from video. http://www.mrmonkeyman.com/images/punchout1.jpg http://www.mrmonkeyman.com/images/punchout2.jpg http://www.mrmonkeyman.com/images/punchout3.jpg |
Holy shit, lots of games in that clip I want to know more about.
And the animation in Punch-Out is fucking AMAZING. |
Who the fuck cares about Punch Out? Was that a sequel to Another Code?!
Anyway, that Punch-out clip looks hilarious and awesome-lookin'. Definitely a game on my must-probably-buy list. |

I think of more interest from the Nintendo conference so far is the new model DS and the release of SD cards for the Wii. |

My gut churns when I have see Shin has replied to a thread concerning Nintendo. This one wasn't too bad though, there were some positive points, although they're thinly veiled insults, but hey.

Still it's Punch-Out, whether I'm pushing a button or swinging my arms, it's still a whole lot of fun. Assuming they don't somehow totally break the game, this is a purchase for me. |

Looks good! Awesome saxophone! Does anyone know who is developing this?

Yeah, hopefully the spectators aren't too cast out

I think it's Glass Joe, when you give him the K.O. punch he spews out French Croissants and Glass Joe was French. The other dude looks like Von Kaiser. |
Yeah, Von Kaiser and King Hippo are pretty identifiable. I wonder if they'd keep Mike Tyson in there, or put in whoever's the world heavyweight champion in the game.
I was unsure whether the fellow was Glass Joe or Don Flamenco, really. |
I have no interest in this. It looks like a remake to me. I've played Punch-Out a hundred times, why do I need to play a remake? I wish they would do something new with it, there is a lot of potential of great new stuff, but it doesn't appear they are going for anything new with this.
|
You have obviously never played Punch-Out.
The added feature of punching people using the remote is an improvement, because you then look LESS stupid for making the punching motion anyway. Seriously, it's Punch-Out. SERIOUSLY. |

No referee Mario? :(
Damn, this will be a day one buy for me when it's released in the US. The graphics are awesome and that updated version of the Bout Theme is making me drool. |
What would be truly awesome is if they brought back popular opponents from both Punch Out games. The prospect of having Don Flamenco, King Hippo, Soda Popinski, Dragon Chan, Mad Clown and Narcis Prince all in one game is gleeful. A slew of new opponents would be grand also, else it will feel too old hat.
Ideally, the last foes should be the Bruiser Bros. from SPO. They were pretty cool and were designed with just the right amount of challenge - neither was overwhelmingly simple nor difficult to overcome. That's how the game should feel, balanced right to the end. Also, a boxing kangaroo as a new opponent would be the greatest thing ever. |
Fuck that, I won't be satisfied unless there's a Teleroboxer cameo.

But seriously. It's fucking Punch-Out!! Love it or hate it, the game is fucking awesome. |
Well they're throwing Classic controls into the game as well as motion-sensitive ones.

Color me less than excited about this game right now.
Nintendo: New Wii Punch-Out!! Details Sneak Out From Nintendo Quote:
Seriously....13 opponents? Super Punch-Out had 16. Sounds more like a lazy ass remake of the original. Glass Joe Von Kaiser Piston Honda Don Flamaco King Hippo Great Tiger Bald Bull Soda Popinski Mr. Sandman Super Macho Man Mr. Dream + 2 more? I really was looking forward to a nice long single player mode with a healthy mix of old and new boxers. I figured they would put in at least 32 (or twice as many as Super Punch out on the SNES, three console generations ago). Even something like at least 20 would have been okay, if not spectacular. But 13? Just two more boxers than the NES version? (One less if you count P. Honda, B. Bull and D. Flamenco twice). I hope there's more to the story than this. Are the fights significantly longer than the NES version? Will some of the 13 fighters return like the three mentioned above? If something like this is the case, Nintendo should let it be known as soon as possible. Maybe I'm overreacting, and if I am I apologize. But after waiting 15 years for a new Punch Out!!, you'd think they'd be more ambitious than 13 opponents. What if Nintendo tried to put out a new Zelda game for the Wii that was just as long as the NES Version, except with two more dungeons? How about a new Mario game that was as long/short as the NES version, except with two new levels? Okay, I think I got it out of my system. Sorry for the ranting. |
A new trailer and a new character introduced.
Check out what Mac is still using after all these years. |
You mean what he's not using, right? Because someone stole it? Is that the joke you're making?
I hope this game has some surprises, because I don't know why anyone would pay for the same old mechanics with a 3D sheen. I'll get the original on the Virtual Console for my nostalgia kicks; thanks. |
Here's a trailer with a minute and 11 seconds of the same stuff previously, then after that they show off the multiplayer gameplay.
Punch-Out!! Multiplayer Trailer |
Haha pink jumpsuit still there.
Is Mario still the referee? |
First review is gooooood.

Yeah, I'm a little skeptical of such fellating reviews myself but if it's half as good as they make it out to be it'll still be worth a purchase.
|
I want me some punch out but 50 dollars is too steep for me for a game that only throws you against 13 fighters. Why couldn't this game be 30 dollars too? =\
Oh well... rental at best! Or I'll buy it from the bargain bin. |
Quote:
So it does sound like they've actually tried to provide a worthy experience for the price. |

Well according to a review of the game it's more like 26 opponents. Once you beat the normal mode you get a mode called "Title Defender Mode." In this mode the opponents are harder and have tougher patterns. The review was talking about how in this mode Glass Joe goes to the doctor and the doctor tells him about his glass jaw(his weakness), so he gets a headgear and blows to the head won't effect him. They also say he sometimes fakes his punches causes them to dodge at the wrong time. The result.......they actually LOST to Glass Joe. If Glass Joe is actually capable of being tough in that mode, then I'm terrified to see how tough the later opponents are. |
|
Piston Honda (Hondo?), Great Tiger and Title Defense Glass Joe and King Hippo Title Defense King Hippo will probably make me want to throw the wiimote. |

that is perfect, cuz the dude is a irl boxer, paulia maligsomething, he's good but super weak ,couldnt knock out a fly. hahaha |
Enjoyed the movies. I guess it's confirmed Mario ain't the referee this time.
How the heck are you supposed to defeat manhole cover Hippo? o.O |
Their website is up at Punch-Out!!. It plays the music from the trailers in the background and gives a showing of the revealed fighters thus far. Click on their stats to see them in action against Little Mac. Be sure to click on Doc in the lower left for a little nostalgia. XD
Also, I wasn't expecting characters from Super Punch Out!! as well. |
You know I dunno if it was mentioned or not, but watching some of these videos I've noticed something about the music. The punch out theme changes with who you're fighting against. Like the music during Great Tiger was the PO theme done with an Indian/Hindu style. Von Kaiser's battle had a German-inspired version (from the videos of the Von Kaiser fight I saw on IGN earlier). I think that's kind of cool and makes me wonder how each fighter's music is going to sound.
BTW on the French Amazon site there is a video for Punch Out that shows other fighters in action, one which wiki says confirms Aran Ryan for the game (some dude with a piece of shit trailer trash mullet and rat tail was shown fighting) edit: Great Tiger added to the official page. |
Animation for Punchout looks top notch. I'm a bit weary about the balance board as well, but to dodge you will be using the controller, pressing left and right. To throw a high punch you will simply push up and then throw a punch; sounds like they are giving more consistency/control to the movements while allowing the fun of the Wii motion to revolutionize this franchise.

Spoiler:
|
But they still haven't revealed Mr. Sandman.
Or - if there is a God above - Dragon Chan and Narcis Prince. |
Sandman was announced. He's the final bout champ.
If he wasn't officially announced, 1up dropped the ball and listed him in their review. |

Anyone else pick this up? I played through the main Contender mode last night and really enjoyed it. Next Level did a fantastic job of retaining the classic Punch-Out!! feel while updating certain aspects (mainly presentation-wise). Let me say that it is in no way a lazy remake as some may have thought it would be. The returning characters don't have the same exact moves (though they are similar), and you have to get used to new timings. Plus, after you beat the main game you unlock Title Defense mode, in which all the characters have new punches/quirks and are thus much tougher. That's what I'm working my way through now. I actually lost to Glass Joe the first time I fought him in this mode. :-/
