Mega Man 9 - Gnarly McNuggets
Judging by his expression, I think even Mega Man's shit his pants. Yes, it has a multi tag! IGN has a worthwhile update for once, Quote:

Has XBLA and PSN logos at the end, also Roll having sex with Rush. http://i38.tinypic.com/1znoqo9.png Please do. I remember a time where a Mega Man sequel like this would have been called "same old shit."
|
Stale Mega Man platforming goodness is a breath of fresh air in this mini-game and FPS infested generation!
|
That or enough time has passed to make it "hip" again.
Yes, I'm bitter :( |
Wow, I read somewhere that Capcom made a mistake for it's E3 lineup and said that this was going to be for Wii only. Good to see that it's still multiplatform.
It's also good to see that they're bringing Rush, Roll, and Beat back. However, you have to wonder if Proto Man and Bass will be back as well. |
Quote:
WAY TO CREATE CONFUSION GUYS, CHRIST. Totally unsure of which to get it for if it goes that way, though. PSN maybe simply because it's got the best d-pad for the job? MOST LIKELY YES. |
I am a bit surprised this isn't going 16 bit or 32 bit like the last few iterations. I guess they are trying to see if the 'oldies but goodies' will work. Well...sorta an oldie but goodie.
The question is...will this game EXPLAIN anything more. Such as...I dunno...formally making the links between this and a certain other Megaman game series... |
Quote:
"Dr. Albert Wily is a dick and the penal system is apparently a joke. Wily has raided yet another Salvation Army Shoppe to create his robotic henchmen. To action, Megaman! For Dr. Wily is unable to learn from history's mistakes and his creations are still vulnerable to your peashooter! Also, each other! Go, dispatch Wily's army and lead us to the vague, unsatisfying end sequence that is the benchmark of the Capcom tradition!" The other series are parallels, unconnected. You don't get confused by other series that exist in parallel worlds, do you? Do you refuse to play FFVIII because Meteor destroyed the planet in FFVII? Hello? Continuity? So why demand tenuous connections here? Just enjoy the game. Don't seek deeper significance in the canon because it's not there. |
Unless I have been horribly misinformed, the Megaman X series is after the original Megaman Series, the Megaman Zero series is after the Megaman X series, I think you get my point.
What I am pointing to is trying the regular and X series together (officially anyway) in explaining what all went down between the two. |
Quote:
A little useless knowledge for you, already basically explained by mortis in a way: The only games in the Mega Man series that ARE NOT CONNECTED are the Battle Network and Star Force games which, by stroke of luck, do take place in this parallel universe you've not so mysteriously concocted in your head along with the rules of Keiji Inafune and Capcom. mortis, if you're looking for a concrete explanation as to what ties the Mega Man, X, Legends, Zero and ZX games together... you're not gonna find it. Inticreates did a great job of working with the time-line for X, Zero, and ZX together; however, the original Mega Man series remains a bit of a mystery as far as I know. What is known, and on Wikipedia, is that Mega Man X was created by Dr. Thomas Light around 30 years after the original series. You may or may not know about the little official Mega Man time line that was drawn up, I believe by Inafune. It goes Mega Man, Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero, Mega Man ZX, and then Mega Man Legends. There's a lot of speculation involving just which specific events lead into Mega Man X from the original Mega Man... but this shit is always vague, and in some documentation not in a video game and more related to supplementary bonus shit like Rockman Perfect Works. You're probably not going to see this explanation in the game, but that's probably because Keiji Inafune doesn't want to ruin the tone of the Mega Man games. He's given enough information throughout these games to sort of piece it together though, that's about as good as you're gonna get. |
Point of order: Like most normal people, I've only played the games (including lot of the non-OG games) which you just stated have no concrete links. It's only through some obscure commentary by the character's creator that any connections exist at all. Any normal person would see no connections because they don't exist within the games themselves. Obviously, I am a hypocrite and a fraud for not having the complete missives of Keiji Inafune sitting here on my desk for trivial reference.
So you basically wasted five paragraphs telling mortis the same thing I did: enjoy the game, don't search for the deeper connections because they won't be there. Congratulations, idiot. Who's all :words: :words: :words: now? |
you guys are arguing about a little robot boy who runs around in his underpants
|
Quote:
The "concrete link" is that Dr Light did indeed build X THIRTY YEARS before Mega Man X1 begins. The issues brought up by mortis is that he wants to know specifically what happens. So, yeah, you're still words and Yes, Pang, I know we're talking about a Robot in his underwear. I'm on a fucking video game forum, OH MY GOD IT'S TERRIBLE. |
But Rotor, like a normal person, he didn't PAY ATTENTION to the few existing implicit links in the games in question, therefore they don't exist.
Or something, I'm not even certain anymore. Clearly, the only solution is to read some expensive foreign resources on the matter in a langauge we don't understand. About a series where no one really gives a fuck about the story. Clearly. |
Are you guys seriously arguing with a guy because he thinks the plot to Megaman games doesn't fucking matter

Yeah, so I'm getting this practically the moment it can be downloaded at Live Marketplace. I wonder what some of the achievements will be like for it, hoping they'll be hard as hell.
I can't get enough of that IGN trailer. I could give half a shit about the plot really, all I want is to get a crack at some unique and classic Mega Man stages once more. Wish Tecmo would bust out another classic Ninja Gaiden like this and keep the NES storyline moving instead of retconning the shit out of it with that new crap. I miss total nonstop falcons. |

I would buy 10 copies of the boxart was this.
|
The best part is that box art was seriously at Capcom's E3 booth, they were giving away t-shirts with that on the front.
I'd spend someone else's life savings to get one of them. |
I am SO thinking of the Tiger Handheld Megaman 2 game whe nI see that...

This topic should always remain on the first page as this gonna be the most orgasmic game release of the decade.
If I were on that picture, you'd see me on my knees thanking god for this release and making love to the add. I wish this was released on disc as well. In any case, this is going to blow every other release out of the water this year. |
I came here thinking that some news had come out, like which day in September this would be released, and then I see the post above. Yes, the game is exciting for us but if that's the only reason you want to bump the thread up then don't even bother posting.

Achievements are out for the 360 version. They skew from what you'd expect to "what the fuck were they thinking". Seriously, Capcom, you expect us to play through the game 5 times in a day?

The others I'm fine with. It's sort of annoying that so many deal with clearing the game, but I can't fault them for rewarding hardcore players. |
I guess they're trying to capture an organic feel with "Beat 5 times in one day", because if you look at the other achievements, they all involve multiple playthroughs of sorts.
|
Turnip makes it sound like Mega Man games are terribly long and therefore difficult to beat multiple times through in single sittings.
Conservationist and Trusty Sidearm sound about the same, though. One would come due to the other, if I'm imagining how this works right. |
Quote:
|
Password systems was cheaper than implementing a battery save, and people died a lot in these things. I really don't think it was because of length, to be honest.
Perhaps I don't find a long session of the same thing ad infinitum all that dull. Perhaps this is because replays come often when playing any length of time with a shooter, I dunno. Regardless, if the game itself is a lot of fun, I really have no issue. Anyway, it's probably a really really easy achievement to dupe. Disconnect from live, reset time/date, play vidcon again. |
All of those achievements look like fun. The 5 times in 1 day will probably be difficult, but it might not be as frustrating as not being hit by a boss. Hey, it doesn't specify that you have to beat it without dying so there's one less worry on your mind.
|
Skills, not all of us have your infinite amount of patience. You beat Project Sylpheed ~11 times just for that one weight achievement, so surely you can recognize you have an unusually high tolerance for repetition. Sure Megaman games aren't very long, but I'd never want to play through the same game more than twice a day at most. I've done marathons of beating all the robot masters in multiple MM games, or beating X and X2 in the same day, but playing the same thing that many times in a single day is a silly requirement.
|
Then don't?
That's just it, and it brings up a point from Southjag's thread. You don't NEED to go for all the achievements. They're there for your enjoyment or challenge if you want to go for them. I enjoy going for them, even if they are ridiculous. They aren't forced upon you, so don't bother if you think the task is ludicrous. It might not be the best achievement challenge ever, but it's at least somewhat unique and not too unbearable. Which is more than can be said for a lot of others. |
True, and that's why I'm not really up in arms about it. It's just a little irritating ruling out getting achievements right away simply because they're not something that would be fun or challenging, but rather just a time killer.
|
Fair enough. Perhaps achievements having enough variety that not everyone gets them all isn't a terrible thing though.
Additionally: Achieve360Points.com - Mega Man 9 - Xbox 360 Achievements You can see some of the sprites in the greyed out achievement icons here. |
The only ones I really have a problem with are the ones that say "use as little weapons as possible." How much can you use them before it decides you've used them too much? Granted, if you play the whole game using only the Mega Buster, it's a pretty easy acheivement, but those requirements seem just a hair too vague.
|
Yeah, I'm imagining something like a segment from Heat Man's stage in MM2, where you could make it easy and use the Jet to clear that lava pit with the vanishing blocks, orrrr you prove you had significant testitcular fortitude and jump it. Something like that could count as "using too much special weapon energy" for example, if the achievement is for not using any special abilities whatsoever (other than what's possibly required?).
|
I like the achievements, and I honestly wish there were more and even tougher ones that are there. I'm not really fond of the timesink achievements like beating the game five times in a single day but the game needed either harder achievements or more achievements. This isn't really an arcade port of any game per se, so they should have taken the liberty to add more points and achievements for it. But oh well.
I'm still pretty excited no matter what. |
I would assume "use as little weapon energy as possible" is taking into account the obstacles in Wily's castle, which always require you to use your special weapons (i.e., Crash Bombs, or Item 1 in MM2).

Great. It's now September. WHERE IS OUR RELEASE DATE.
|
I'd honestly be surprised if we got a solid date more than a week or two before it released.
I also wouldn't be surprised if it ended up in October, so. |

Anyhow, this was the first time I've seen all of the robot boss designs and sprites. About half are acceptable, which is the going standard in any Mega Man game after number 3. I was worried that Splash Woman would be absolutely horrible but the mermaid angle is mildly clever. I'm kind of glad they didn't overdo the "girl" aspect; she still looks robotic enough. Magma Man, on the other hand, is garbage. It's just Needle Man with a red paint job. But at least he personifies his theme. Concrete Man doesn't look anything at all like concrete. I'm still not a fan of the "outer space eyes" they used on Galaxy Man (and Astro Man) but the body is fairly neat. Hornet Man, well, he just looks like "80s Synthesizer Drum Pad Man" to me. All I know is that this soundtrack had better deliver. 6, 7 and 8 were all pretty abysmal. |
I can live without charging, as I never used it that much anyway, but it's gonna some getting used to not being able to slide. Maybe I should play MM2 a few times to get the hang of it again.

Not that it's exactly cost-effective for Capcom to do so, but if the game's programming was compliant with the old NES's system constraints, I - and many others, I presume - would happily pay good money for a bona fide Mega Man 9 cartridge. Even if it were a limited run, I wouldn't think twice about doing everything within my power to own a hard copy. The game is already a labor of love, so I think it'd be the ultimate in fan service to make the game a tangible item.
A hardcore NES collector can dream, right? |

Strange with the staggered release, though. I would have assumed it would have gotten out on the services in the same week, only all on their respective update days. Waiting a week while all you folks blow a load in this thread is gonna suck the major dick though. |
If it makes you feel any better, I'll probably be stuck waiting months for the PAL release. :cmb:
WHAT ARE ALL THESE DRIED SPOTS ON THE WALL. |
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but XBLA titles have never had a situation yet where they're released in only one region at a time, right? I know it's occured on the Wii and PS3, but if I recall correctly, it's not yet happened on Live.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe that means you'll get it at the same time on that service? If so, perhaps the other two won't be too long behind that? I can |
IGN gave it a 3.0 in graphics. I refuse to buy it now, because I might be irreparably harmed.
|
I'll hope so hard something might burst!
|
Regarding the press kit, alot of the cartridges came from a game store in North Hollywood LA called Game Dude. My fiance and his co workers sold at least 800 super cheap NES cartridges to the press kit people, whom he believes were part of the I am 8bit gallery that had the Mega Man 9 artwork. So while I haven't played the Mega Man games, I thought that this was kinda cool that somehow his store played a part of making this neat, retro press kit.

Protoman playable via DLC

I'm really debating on whether or not I want to get this for Wii now or wait for the 360 version next week. Honestly I'd rather have the Wii's D-pad since the 360's sucks, and I wasn't thrilled by the achievement list anyway. Since the DLC is on all systems, that's not really an issue either. I'd probably have to delete another channel or two to have enough memory on my Wii, though.
|
Quote:
Tritoch has a point, the achievement list wasn't all that great, and I'd get to play the game a week and a half early if I bought it on Wii. Then again, how many blocks would the game + DLC take up on my Wii? And I for one prefer the 360 controller. EDIT: 66 blocks for the game, 2 blocks for a save. Not bad at all. Surely the DLC won't be huge. Once character, and some sort of new level so far, I think. |
megaman9hunkahunkahunkwad**Hidden Content**
hurr hurr why does this game have downloadable content? It should be in the game. |
Aww fuck...Oh well. it did feel good actually buyin it.. Got any others, amigo ? =] What do you recommend from wii ware?
edit: btw. I heard something about protoman being in this game but uhh.. as downloadable content =/ |
|
I just started playing this game and i'm having good fun with it. I'm trying to get to the woman boss, but i'm finding her level to be a pain in the ass.
I've already beating the universe boss or whatever his name was (bottom left) and that was really simple, his level had a great to go through and very different than any other old megaman I played. Of all the megaman games, it reminds me of Megaman 4 the most (which was my favorite) you just can't charge or slide. Oh well. This is going to take me all day to complete compared to the older megamans which take me about an hour. |
Quote:
OH MY LEVEL |
Dude....Yeah, this is becoming one of the hardest megamans I've ever played. I can't even get to the bosses, and when I sometimes actually get there, they completely kick my ass.
One hour into it..one boss killed, i've only got to one other boss. SHIT! |

More Mega Man 9 DLC on the way
* Endless Attack, October 6, 300 Wii Points: "Test your skills on a stage without end. Try to break the record for getting the farthest. Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges." * Proto Man Mode, October 6, 200 Wii points: "Play the game as Proto Man. You can use the shield while jumping. Some of Proto Man's abilities may differ from Mega Man's. There is no story for Proto Man. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges." * Hero Mode, October 20, 100 Wii Points: "Play the game with a more difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges." * Superhero Mode, October 20, 100 Wii Points: "Play the game with a super difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges." * Special Stage, October 20, 100 Wii Points: "Gives you another Time Attack Stage to try, including a new Boss at the end! Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges." |
Well, I cracked and bought it on Wii. Since it's got this list of Challenges I won't really miss the achievements, and it's quite a bit of fun. I've tried Galaxy, Plug, and Splash so far and managed to beat Splash Woman since she had such an easy pattern. Her level's a funky mix of Dive Man and Wave Man for the most part, but those water platforms at the end were a bit difficult.
I'm fine with the Special Stage and Proto Man DLC, but difficulty settings and Endless Attack really should've been in the game to begin with. I might pick up Endless Attack eventually, but I happen to already have 300 extra points for Proto Man and Special. |
Quote:
Maybe it's the rust in me, but I've got a "game over" with 3 lives on every stage so far. :( |
I've beaten it and frankly, I'm not impressed in the slightest. It's a good move on Capcom's part and I hope it's successful in the long run. They just went too far back and I found myself feeling insulted as the game reached its closure. There are a lot of Inticreates touches and nods toward the later games, but I'm not a fan of Inticreates' level design here and I found myself going "I've seen this before" way more times than I would have liked.
|
I'm honestly surprised you bought it at all, let alone on release day. You've been complaining since it was first announced, so it would've been a shock if you'd liked it.
|
Wow, Tritoch, and what are you basing that off of? The fact I told Crash the Mega Man games are indeed connected or my blog where I eventually tried to be positive about it? Moreover, I didn't buy it, I went to my neighbor's place and we had a few drinks while playing through it.
I was apprehensive about Capcom's presentation choice, and frankly that doesn't say shit for the game that I played or the fact I'M HOPING IT SUCCEEDS. |
I'm basing that off of remembering you being a lot more negative than you apparently were, and a hasty search to confirm that during Heroes' commercial break. I could've sworn you complained more about using the MM2 style. Damn that Sylar and his mind games! :(
Forgot you even had a blog. |
I was at work rocking out to it...no time to upload. I'm working on an FTP direct-download. Meanwhile:
http://gb2gt.com/gff/MM9_Soundtrack.torrent Enjoy! EDIT: http://gb2gt.com/gff/MM9_Soundtrack.rar |
I'm pretty sure Crash was the one complaining. Then again, Rotor thinks MM6 is awesome on toast, so I could see where one could get confused.
Anyway, I haven't played enough to develop an opinion, but it's ok. The thing about the Mega Man games (besides the first one) is that they weren't hair-pullingly hard, and for all the "hey let's go back and do it like the old days" mentality of the designers, they seem to have forgotten that fact. Also, why did they out-and-out recycle some of the music? The boss introduction theme is fine, but they could have at least remixed it. And why go with the "weapon get" music out of MM2? That's the worst of any of them. |
If you want me to be negative about something, then...
"HEROES SUCKS!!" Mega Man 9 is what it is, I don't think the "IT'S NOSTALGIA" argument is a fail-proof defense for the product we got, but it's not a catch all flaw either and it's certainly not why I didn't enjoy what I played overall. Edit: nutty, while I'm sure you have me on audio exaggerating on the radio show, I would have rationally said that Mega Man 6 is not as bad as people say it is. Same with 7 and 8. |
Been playing it for an hour or so... and all I can say is: Wow, holy shit this game is hard. If I hadn't gotten to the last boss in I Wanna Be the Guy I prolly would be raging really hard right now. :tpg:

Mega Man 8 would have been akin to what Mega Man 4 was to Mega Man 5 if we had a more direct sequel to it, that's how I feel about it. It's very similar to 4 in having good ideas, but not so good execution. It had some good ideas, and the only major flaws I'd say are apparent are "JUMP, JUMP"/"SLIDE, SLIDE" and the shoot em up sections/overall section breaks.
Edit: nutty, now I'm positive I said Mega Man 3 was my personal favorite, I just said 6 was one I played on the original NES and it wasn't as bad as folks said it was. |
God damn, I must say I haven't smiled this much playing a video game in a long time. Seeing as how Mega Man is my favorite game series, I've been eagerly anticipating this game since it was first announced, and so far it hasn't disappointed. It's hard as fucking balls, which is a welcome change. Granted, the MM games have never been easy, but they've also never been so demanding, which I am happy about. The music is top notch, the level design is solid, and overall it's just great to have my favorite video game character back.
I was a little shocked by the lack of slide and mega buster, but I've gotten over it. This feels great and I'm on cloud 9 playing it. |

you guys are lucky, i can´t play it beacuse the consoles are really expensive here in argentina. i`m a megaman fan since i was a child, and now after 12 years waiting for a new chapter of the original saga, i must watch it on youtube. Damn (sorry for this)
|
ok it's been a while that i've played an old school megaman game or any for that matter but I tried out the demo stage and goddamn shit is this thing hard. I honestly tried blazing through the level and afterwords took my time but still it was challenging.
|
Okay this got released in Australia on WiiWare. It's awesome, not difficult, but awesome.
With Wario Land, De Blob and now MM9 this is turning into one of the best weeks in gaming for a long time. |

Cement man.
Third elephant caught me off guard at first too. I want to see the rest of the level design. Edit: From the other stages, I mean. I beat the demo, but yeah. |
Still trying to get past that stupid elephant. Not to mention the spikes in Jewel Man's stage.

It's just a matter of getting the right timing and shooting over the ball from the furthest platform. Or you could stock up on Beats in the store if you can't get the hang of it.

I'm in the third level of Wily's castle, that's where I have been stuck.
On stage one "I think" there is this part where there are 3 lazer lava things going across the screen, you're on the very bottom and there are two ladders above while the lava takes up 75 percent of the screen. You'd think they'd go in a pattern so you could some way manage your way to the top, but once the screen loads and lava starts shooting, you're completely with no way to get to the top at all. I don't remember the second or third level much, other than the boss of the second level is ridiculously easy. I'm going to beat this damn game tonight! |

Since no one has posted it yet, Protoman gameplay footage:
Video link, since youtube tags didn't work. He acts like the more recent Mega Man, with the addition of a shield. Also, looks like he has some sort of gizmo in place of Rush. |
I can't see the video, nutty! In any case, it's not a "gizmo", he uses the "Items" from Mega Man 2. And lol at the "more recent Mega Man" comment. We really went too long without a Mega Man game.
|
Fixed. Maybe youtube tags don't work on stuff on Japanese youtube.

Since no one has mentioned it yet, Protoman DLC came out this week along with Endless Attack Mode. Surprisingly, Protoman mode seems a little harder since the game is designed around the pea shooter and Protoman only gets 2 shots at a time instead of 3.

*gets to Wily Stage 3 with no lives left*
*dies by falling into a pit of spikes while performing a tricky jump* "hmmm.. continue? perhaps I'll go back into the shop to get one of those spike protectors" *chooses stage select* *buys a spike protector* *goes back to Wily's castle* *starts from the first stage* :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:( :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:( |
I feel your pain, Darth. A couple of weeks ago, I had gotten to Wily Stage 4 and decided to save and quit since I had class. The next day, I boot the game back up and see Wily's ship floating, Wily doing his trademark eyebrow wiggling, and then the intro to Wily's Castle which started me back at the beginning of the castle.
At least this time around it was easier getting past the first three stages since I spent a lot of time against the bosses. |
Yeah, I played through the first stage of Wily's castle so many times that I can actually get to the stage without dying. 2nd stage wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for that underwater area.

Well I finally got around to playing this game, and I have to say that it's awesome! At first I hated the fact that Mega Man didn't have the slide or chargeable megabuster that I'd long become accustomed to, but I was surprised to find that I really didn't miss it that much.
I also love how balls-out hard it is. There are so many random enemies and death traps in the game, that you've just got to laugh. Never before have my deaths in a game made me laugh like this. It feels like the same guys that write Aqua Teen Hunger Force designed some of the stages in this game because, in comparison to the NES originals, they just feel wacky. All in all it's a great game, and a wonderful addition to the franchise. What I'd like to know is on what hardware they made the game. I'm sure that all the original NES dev kits are scrap by now, so I wonder what they did to ensure those same constraints. I guess they could use an emulator, but I wonder if it was one of their own design or exactly how they went about it. Lastly what are those achievement like pop-ups that come up during the stages? They aren't actual achievements, and I don't remember what one of them said, but they pop up in-game. |
