What kind of milk do you drink?

2% milk is the only kind, Philistines.

I mean, while any kind of milk is OK to drown out the sugar in your Lucky Charms, 2% tastes betar.

i am good at jokes Jun 24, 2008 08:10 PM

I actually just chose the option that represents what I drink most often. Not really a personal choice, just a consequence of living around the people I do.

ctu Jun 24, 2008 08:41 PM

Chocolate milk FTW!

:) Need to add that to the poll

Little Brenty Brent Brent Jun 24, 2008 08:45 PM

Skim owns. I don't want to have to have another drink to wash down my drink.

Summonmaster Jun 24, 2008 08:53 PM

2% out of force of habit and due to not noticing any other options at the supermarket other than skim and 2%. I don't even think I've tasted or can detect a difference among each kind!

Rockgamer Jun 24, 2008 09:23 PM

If it's not whole it's basically just white water to me. I'll drink 2% or fat free if I absolutely have to (i.e. I just poured a bowl of cereal without checking to see if we had any whole milk), but as a rule I generally only drink whole milk.

Snowknight Jun 24, 2008 09:37 PM

My mom always bought skim milk when I lived at home, so I prefer to drink skim if I have the choice. I'm accustomed to its taste or, depending on your opinion, lack thereof.
I can't stand whole milk after all these years of drinking skim. It's too rich for me.

The unmovable stubborn Jun 24, 2008 10:18 PM

soy option is absent

Chaotic Jun 24, 2008 10:18 PM

My parents shuffled between 2% and Fat Free for a while. Now we buy Organic Rice Milk.

Milk is milk to me, it's all tasted the same to me over the years.

But... 1% or 2%? Most chocolate milk is 1%, but if you can find 2%, definitely give it a try. It's awesome.

I voted 2%, by the way.

goldsac Jun 24, 2008 10:59 PM

The higher the percentage, the worse it is. For some reason any milk other than skim tastes like warm milk to me, even if it's straight outta the fridge *ugh*. ANd yeah, there's tons of milks missing form the poll anyway...chocolate, soy, goat, breast, homo, etc

Muzza Jun 25, 2008 12:46 AM

Whole milk for me~ I can't stand the lighter stuff for some reason. Whole milk tastes much better with cookies etc anyway, so that's good enough for me. :3:

I drink most kinds of milks, whichever that's available or is cheaper. Used to drink a lot of whole milk but I drink more of skim milk now that I prefer an option with lower fat content.

Then again, chocolate milk FTW really!

gidget Jun 25, 2008 01:16 AM

I'll drink 1% or 2%, though I prefer 1%. I can't drink whole milk. It tastes disgusting.

Shonos Jun 25, 2008 01:28 AM

I drink fat free (skim) milk and almond milk. Soy tastes disgusting and I have never tried rice or oat milk. I cant stand whole milk or 1%/2%, but that's probably because I grew up on skim.

Paco Jun 25, 2008 02:04 AM

The "Coctel Bronco" (Chocolate milk with tequila) isn't available so I just put whole milk.

There should be an option for "Malk" as well.

thirdjean Jun 25, 2008 03:32 AM

I have drunk whole milk for my whole life.
I personally think that skim milk is the way milk companies cheat on consumers by adding water in whole milk.
And my mom always told me that they give milk flavors because the spice would cover up the smell of bad milk. So I have never really drunk flavored ones. (Except the chocolate milk you get from chocolate cereal)

Little Brenty Brent Brent Jun 25, 2008 10:12 AM

You're personally incorrect. Skim milk has nothing to do with adding water. It's just removal of milk fat. The only thing you're being cheated of is inclusion in an enormous - and still growing (har har) - portion of the population that's obese.

The unmovable stubborn Jun 25, 2008 01:53 PM

I am not sure the population of Taiwan is undergoing a significant obesity problem.

I have always been amused by the contention that skim milk is "like water". Of course it is, dumbass! It's a beverage. If you want to drink a fatty semisolid I got a grease trap over here that needs cleaning.

Aardark Jun 25, 2008 02:18 PM

Can't believe no one else picked chocolate. I don't drink milk by itself, but chocolate milk with coffee is sometimes pretty cool.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Jun 25, 2008 03:44 PM

I prefer milk as local and as natural as I can get it. Does that count as "whole."

Which is not very frequently. At all. So I generally refrain from drinking milk as much as possible because it tastes awful.

But for cooking and baking? Exclusively whole milk.

Paco Jun 25, 2008 06:24 PM

How can you say it tastes awful? ;__;

There are few things on this earth better than a glass of milk and Oreo cookies!

Arkhangelsk Jun 25, 2008 06:43 PM

My mom is the one who directs the milk preferences in our household.
First, she converted my dad from dairy-fresh whole milk to fat free.
I always drank fat-free at home, and 2% at my grandma's house.
Then for reasons unknown to me, my mom switched to Silk Soymilk about 7 years ago.

Personally, I always liked 1/2% milk far better than fat-free, and as long as the soymilk is Silk Unsweetened (and unflavored), I think it's consistency is about the same and tastes enough like milk -- while having more health benefits and only slightly more fat/calories/etc. than fat-free milk.

Because it tastes awful. And has a really odd sort of consistency that somehow allows it to never taste cold.

Skim please, though, if you must.

RacinReaver Jun 25, 2008 07:59 PM

You never had freshly made soy milk have you?

RacinReaver Jun 25, 2008 08:02 PM

My old roommate would bring back soy milk that was still warm, and just the thought of it made me want to vomit.

I use soy since I mostly just use milk for cooking nowadays, and I hate opening up my milk in the middle of a recipe to find out it's turned into a giant chunk.

Bigblah Jun 25, 2008 08:08 PM

I love soy milk, but it makes my throat ache afterwards. It's like an allergic reaction.

I'm with you Sass. I don't care for Oreos at all. That being said, I will have some if I'm craving something sweet and nothing else is around...
I prefer chocolate chip cookies. =p

The milk I drink is that of 2%. It what my family buys, so I drink it. However, I've always wondered how the other types, besides chocolate milk, taste.

Bernard Black Jun 26, 2008 08:29 AM

I put what is exclusively in the fridge these days. I much prefer semi-skimmed (I've no idea what percentage that is) but I drink milk so infrequently without flavouring that there's not much point in buying it. My mother's always been the kind of person who likes to have food and drink "the way nature intended it", without taking into account how processed it is anyway.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

Penis Overflow Jun 27, 2008 03:04 AM

I drink 2% the most because it goes good with cereal, but chocolate milk is by far the best by itself. The powdered stuff is okay, but a real good chocolate milk is made by chocolate syrup. You know, when you mix a lot of syrup in the milk and churn it until the sides aren't covered in chocolate? That's the best.

Only not. British standard full cream milk is 4% fat so semi-skimmed is pretty much universally 2% in this country. And also fucking horrible. I can't understand how anyone would think that a 2% reduction in the fat content of the milk they have would make enough difference to their weight that it's worth the fact that it tastes of absolutely nothing. I can live with semi-skimmed milk in tea or coffee but to straight drink it or have on cereal it's got to be full-fat.

My house-mate has rice milk which tastes a bit odd but isn't entirely undrinkable I guess.

Minoko Jun 27, 2008 06:17 AM

I usually drink soy if there is cheap ones. Sometimes I would drink fortified milk...(well thats what it says on the carton!). Like the fortified milk because it has a vanilla taste but I drink with caution. Its odd my stomach doesn't agree with milk but is ok with ice cream. I tried skim milk but for some reason I get gassy.

A4: IN THE DUNGEONS OF THE SLAVE LORDS Jun 27, 2008 06:37 AM

I remember for a while my brother would only drink Banana Quik that we could only find for sale at a grocery store near my grandparents down in Washington DC. One day, he decided he was sick of it, and now we still have two tins full of the powder sitting in our closet.

Trace-S Jun 28, 2008 12:19 AM

Its kind of strange but I've never been a big fan of drinking milk by itself because more often than not my stomach disaggrees with it. The only kind of milk I can drink by itself is probably 2% chocolate milk, but usually I find any kind of milk by itself leaves a bad aftertaste in my mouth.

What is even more unusual is that I actually drink a lot of milk but only when its added to something. The most common milk we usually have in our house is 1% or 0.5% partly skimmed milk. I absolutely love milk in my cereal mainly cinnamon toast crunch and one of my favourite alcoholic drinks are grasshoppers (creme de menthe and milk).

ComradeTande Jun 28, 2008 11:45 AM

chocolate soy :<
thats the only way i like my grape nuts (hur hur hur)

Anazai Jun 28, 2008 12:00 PM

Skim milk for me...anything more is too thick and I can't drink it by itself, sure I'll have 2% in my cereal sometimes when I run out of my milk and have to use my husband's. That's all he drinks. I really think that drinking a less fat milk effects my weight so I stick with it.

Acacia Jul 1, 2008 11:04 PM

I normally drink 2%, and 1% too, since I really can't taste the difference.

I don't buy regular milk though. Like Garr, I think I'm lactose intolerant, but I can't go without my cereal and oatmeal-cooked-in-milk, so I buy lactose-free milk.

It's expensive as hell, but it's slightly sweeter and doesn't give my stomach problems, no matter how much I drink.

funkmasterY Jul 6, 2008 03:37 AM

Has anyone ever had milk pasteurized using the UHT method? It beats all comers for crappiness. It does not even need to refrigerated, you can keep it on the floor for sometimes up to months at a time. YUM.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Jul 6, 2008 03:45 AM

The idea of milk sitting in my pantry for months doesn't exactly elicit "yum" as a response.

funkmasterY Jul 6, 2008 03:59 AM

You would think, but once that nasty milk that scares children and kills old people hits your lips, that familiar feeling of satisfaction comes over you, and you begin to have convulsions.

Teriyakifan Jul 18, 2008 02:59 PM

I drink 2%. I guess I'm getting older and more health conscious....

Nehmi Jul 19, 2008 03:36 AM

I heard a nice story about milk, in which they dehydrate it and then remix it later in large vats with water. Mmmm, tasty!

As for me I drink rice or almond milk. Used to drink soy, but try to avoid everything with soy these days (pretty much damned impossible).

Ruth Loose Jul 20, 2008 09:00 PM

1% but I have opened up to 2% this past year. Whole milk is bleeehhhh.

Janus X Jul 20, 2008 10:17 PM

because it was cheaper in quebec, and because i was poor, i bought skim. Even now, i tend to buy this one; i get my fat elsewhere

I can cope with 1% ans 2%, but 3% is absolutely disgusting

Shorty Jul 21, 2008 10:05 PM

I never drink milk but if I need to buy it (in case I want to make yogurt or have it stocked for a week much needing of coffee or something), I usually buy 2%.

EDIT: I lied, I have dried non-fat milk I use too.

kouji Jul 31, 2008 11:41 PM

Normally, I prefer skim milk, as the whole milk tends to make me feel sick, because of the density of fat within the milk...
But I also don't think 1% is bad, since little bit of fat can help you satisfy your tongue.

SpaceMonk Aug 12, 2008 01:07 PM

Organic rice milk or sometimes almond for me. if you guys are interested look up Monsanto Milk on youtube

Craze Aug 22, 2008 02:29 AM

I've never tried coconut flavoured milkshakes. Where are you from?

unknown_user Sep 8, 2008 06:28 PM

Chicago, theres a couple places where you could get coconut milkshakes which are AWESOME but the coconut milk ive tried taste really different and bad to me ;(

deadally Sep 8, 2008 06:45 PM

I voted skim, simply because there was no "any normal" option. Manmilk need not apply there.

I can drink any flavor of the stuff, really, that I've come across. I sure notice the difference, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.

This flexibility makes me pretty happy :)

Probably because they don't add coconut milk to milkshakes. I imagine it's a typical milkshake with coconut shavings or flavoring instead of, say, vanilla or chocolate. Coconut milk is a whole different beast entirely. If your coconut milk did taste like normal or soy milk, I'd get worried.

unknown_user Sep 9, 2008 04:42 AM

Nope, it has no shavings, just an AWESOME taste. Yet, coconut milk taste completely different otherwise.

Whole milk is usually only 3% which isn't exactly a drastic difference.

I wonder about some of the people who swear by skim and 2% and sacrifice flavor over fat content that will probably never make a measureable difference to their body.

Of course, if you just prefer the flavor of one over the other, that's a bit different but I hardly think an extra percent or two of fat qualifies as gluttonous.

The unmovable stubborn Sep 10, 2008 01:50 PM

Actually, lardo, in the population that drinks any kind of milk other than skim, milk is an enormous source of dietary fat.

Kaleb.G Sep 12, 2008 04:44 AM

I've switched between different types of milk so much. I'll get used to anything after drinking it for a little while. But personally, I dislike whole milk. It's too thick and leaves residue on my mouth/tongue. It's not a good kind of thick either, as it's essentially fat. I like soy milk, but it's like apples-to-oranges with cow milk. Chocolate is awesome, for sho.

Lately I drink a lot of skim (fat free) milk. No fat, and still milky tasting.

My family has only had whole or 2% milk my whole life, and we're all at the low spectrum of healthy BMI. So I can see where he was coming from. Not everyone that drinks fatty milk is fat. Just as not everyone that drinks skim milk is skinny.

And, despite what the general belief is...not all fats are bad. Milk fat is a natural, saturated fat. It's essential for cellular regeneration, brain and ocular functions, and skin and hair health. About the only negative of saturated fats is that it has a tendency to increase cholesterol if overconsumed (but nothing is good for you in excess).

Natural saturated fats are nothing at all like trans fats (hydrogenated vegetable oils -- unnatural and unhealthy and THE cause of obesity). Drinking whole milk is not going to make you fat, if you maintain a healthy diet and avoid trans fats.

wvlfpvp Sep 13, 2008 09:06 PM

Dammit, there's no single cause of obesity. If trans fats made people obese, I'd be fucking huge.

BlindMonk Sep 14, 2008 12:16 PM

There's the rather glaring omission of goat milk. I haven't tried it for years but I grew up on it and I know there's a decent sized "farm chic" segment of the public who seek that stuff out. Have known a few to even raise their own herd.

Ah! Amoeba Sep 18, 2008 11:19 PM

For most of my life I only drank 2% because that's what my mom would buy. Now that I am an ADULT and can buy whatever kind of MILK I want, mom, I... well, I still usually end up buying 2%, sure, but only out of habit, not out of any sort of preference.

Like with most things that I put in my mouth, I am not all that picky when it comes to milk. If that's all you've got, then sure. In fact, I had a bowl of Raisin Bran with soy milk this morning and it was the best damn breakfast cereal experience I've had since they starting putting Red Balloons in my Frosted Mini Cookie Combs. Oh, what a magical day of breakfast improvisation that was!

Actually no. It's my parents because, when I used to drink straight sugar, she would always buy the diet stuff and I told to her that it doesn't taste the same and she said yes it does.

And to this day she can't tell because I have given her regular some times just to see if she notices. Nope.

wvlfpvp Sep 23, 2008 08:02 AM

Capo, I've run into other non-smokers who don't know the difference between diet and regular; some people just don't taste as strongly as others . . . either that or they do taste the difference but honestly don't give a fuck.

Sousuke Sep 23, 2008 11:04 AM

I honestly don't know how people can't tell the difference between regular and diet. Dr Pepper does a good job of confusing the tastebuds, but any other diet I've tried pretty much tastes... diet.

Back to milk, however... About a month ago I bought a 1L carton of whole milk because the store I was at didn't have any 2% left [which we normally buy] and I absolutely loved it. I've taken to buying my own [whole/3.25%] milk now and not only love the taste, but also the fact that nobody else in the house will drink it. They seem to buy 1% now. :3:

Also, since the switch, it seems a lot easier to tell the difference between even 2% and whole. I spent last week in the hospital and they only had 2% and skim, so I settled for the 2%... and well, it just wasn't the same.

Midna Sep 23, 2008 01:44 PM

I admit I drink diet soda, and that it tastes awful, but the corn syrup in American soda gives me a horrible headache. I have yet to come across a person, smoker or not, who doesn't make a face and make a "bleh" sort of sound when they take a sip of my drink, not realizing it's diet until too late.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Sep 23, 2008 03:34 PM

I didn't think anyone still drank full-sugar drinks. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't drink diet. Generally diet tastes nicer and the amount of sugar you're taking on board in just a singe can of coke can properly fuck you up.

Then again, there are quite a few fatties posting here so the fact that most of you drink full sugar drinks shouldn't really surprise me that much.

wvlfpvp Sep 23, 2008 03:57 PM

Not just the fatties. Some of us that fall into that 150 lb, 5'10" or 11" range drink non-diet. I mean, seriously. My non-juice drinks better have extra sugar in there.

Juices, though? Those need to be no sugar added. You get enough natural sugar from the fruits and stuff for them to taste fine, but ain't nothing natural about a soda. Those need extra sugar. Can be cane, can be corn syrup, but it needs to be toothrotteningly good.

RacinReaver Sep 23, 2008 04:56 PM

I've heard Mexican Coke is actually still sugar and not corn syrup. I'm a diet drinker, though, so it doesn't matter a whole lot to me. Non-diet sodas always leave me feeling very full and bloated, pretty much the opposite of what I want while eating dinner or a late-night drink.

The unmovable stubborn Sep 23, 2008 05:07 PM

Yeah, it's still real cane sugar nearly everyplace but the USA, since the rest of the world's governments don't seem particularly interested in subsidizing any random yahoo who manages to make corn come out of the dirt.

There are a couple diet sodas that manage to come pretty close to their sugary counterparts. Diet Dr. Pepper is one of the better examples. One of the root beers, A&W maybe (I don't specifically recall which), has also succeeded in a near match. They're not perfect but they're bounds ahead of the rest of the pack. It's plausible that someone who wasn't paying particular attention could confuse those.

Diet Coke? No chance in hell. That shit tastes like malted laundry detergent.

Sprite changed their formula a few years back to make it taste much, much better than it used to. I've always liked diet sodas better, but even diet sprite would make me go :barf:. I think it's because diet 7-up had reformulated a little bit earlier and is actually very close to normal 7-up as well (though it has a slightly less sticky feeling).

And, yes, Diet Coke tastes like butt; that's why God inveted Diet Pepsi.

It still all boils down to a person's preference between a kick in the balls or a kick in the teeth.

I'll drink either 2 or 1 percent milk, depending on what's affordable this week.

Anything but whole. You can taste the fat.

But you can still taste the flavor with 2%; personally, that's the right AMOUNT of flavor.
