Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...l/08043001.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...go_qjgenth.jpg General Info from GameFAQs:
The game is apparently getting a slight bump-up, showing up in stores tomorrow rather than Wednesday. As a staunch... despiser of the original Tactics Advance, I'm going into this game with large amounts of skepticism. However, I've ended up purchasing it because of certain changes that have been confirmed (faster AI movement, more references to the real Ivalice, Seeqs). So, as the last game in the Ivalice Alliance, is anyone else planning on nabbing it? |
I really liked the original FF Tactics Advance and played it to completion back when it was released. I'm currently unemployed, so I cannot afford to buy games right now, but when I have the money I'll definitely get my hands on this baby.
|
FFTA was my shit, I played the fuck out of that game. Of course this may largely be due to the fact that I spent a lot of time on public transit at the time and needed something to pass the time during long train/bus rides, but I eventually ended up beating it 100% and doing all the bonus quests and shit. A million hours of game play.
NYR has my cart of it now, so no save bonus for me ;_;. Definitely tempted to run out and buy FFTA2 today, even though I'm still working on my backlog of other stuff. Does Paladin + Double Sword still = lololol or did they fix that this time around. |
No, it's mostly the same. What was nerfed was Concentrate, making Double Sword undisputed.
|
Excellent. Sad to hear Concentrate getting the nerf stick though. I rather liked that one too.
|
I'm going to sound retarded saying this, but the only thing that kept me from enjoying FFTA more was the fact that the menus felt too cluttered, and I could never get a handle on what the FUCK was going on with my character's equipment. As long as that is fixed, I can see myself spending gobs of hours on this.
|
Aws yeah. FFTA was my jam back in the day. I fucked the shit out of that too (fuck? shit? too?). Like Tails, it was a commute game. Then again, that's the case for all my DS playtime.
I'm almost done 100%-ing The World Ends With You, so this game is coming at a perfect time in my selection of next DS game to play. Since I'm having it shipping, I get a few extra days to complete. :p |
Final Fantasy Tactics was a game that when people asked you about it, you could sit down and explain it to them and sell them on it. Its not a perfect game but I'll say its one of the very few PSX games that you can detail as the best of the system (and for those of us intellectuals - as one of the greatest games ever made.)
FFTA is the kind of game you played while no one was looking. Now, if you enjoyed FFTA - more power to you. Liking fun things is what life is about, but the fact that you went from a deep, interesting story with phenominal battle system to a "kids game" (Im using that loosely) with an awful Judge system to hamper the gameplay was like walking out of a fine dinner and stepping in dog shit. FFTA2? I hope a lot of people enjoy it - but truth be told, I'm considering getting a damn PSP off of Ebay just to play FFT; I won't buy a DS for this - even though its easily the better handheld. |
LeHah: The judge system is much more lenient this time around. It's no longer involving jail or incredibly draconian penalties. Major plus.
Downside is, I've seen one review mention one of the rules they go to be "Don't let enemies steal gil from you." What the hell? I hope there's not one that says "Don't get hit." |

The law system in this game is fixed, meaning each mission , quest, trial, what have you has a set Law specifically for it that you cannot change unless you action replayed it into a different law.
Laws do not apply to enemies. The Laws themselves are extremely frustrating and retarded at times, but the worst penalization you get is the loss of any type of Revive. Examples: Do not Attack Do not Attack someone of a lower level Do not Attack any Males // Females (separate Laws) Do not Miss Do not deal more than 20 Damage so on and so forth. |
Wow, those Laws are rough. I was going to say... In FFTA, the Laws sucked. There were battles you'd fight, and end up having to break the law several times, landing a bunch of characters in jail. In FFTA2, though... Well, the punishment for breaking the Laws doesn't seem all that severe. You can't revive for the rest of the battle.
What I didn't know is that in A2 the Laws are fixed to each battle. I like that. The fact that you used to be able to just move around the map a couple spaces to skip a tough Law made the game a lot easier. I've only played past the first mission, but I'm really liking it so far. Question for those who are farther: Do you place cities on the map, and build your own Ivalice as in FFTA? If so... does it generate items the same way? I remember there being some items you could only get by placing cities in certain places. |
Quote:
Both are insignificant in the long run because Privileges just make the battle easier and bonus items you can just create later at the Bazaar. |
Nope, I'm just retarded, which Lace has pointed out. |
I agree with LeHah on this. The judge system left a bad taste in my mouth. To add to things, I REALLY didn't like playing as some elementary-school aged kid :( I know games are meant to cater to the youth or age brackets, but I'd prefer the main character to be a bit older. Otherwise, I don't see how the story can mature and be enjoyable to me.
FFT had a dark, complex story that sits next to Xenogears as one of my PSX favorites. However, when you progress it away from church conspiracy and turn it in to little Tommy looking for his Cripple Friend in an imaginary world or some shit, I go "wtf". |
Quote:
The load-in bonus is the Clan Ability Libra, which lets you see hidden traps. You get it later in the game though so it's not so exclusive. Speed Up 2 is most likely from your beginning of the game choices. The three answer choices you pick determine your bonus ability. |
Oh yeah that's right, Libra, it says so in the FAQ I put up top. This is pissing me off then, because I have two Up 2 Clan privileges and I'm not sure why.
I just got to Camoa, and I'm... nondescript. The AI speed is only marginally improved, and I just wish actions and animations could be skipped or sped up. Everything else is fine however, and I do admit the Mastery system for new jobs is better than Job Levels from ol' Final Fantasy Tactics. Just give me a Seeq already, game. |
No random encounters pissed me off a first, but then I realized I didn't have the equipment to learn any new skills. And that I couldn't find any recipes for Rods, so my mages are woefully weak compared to my physical fighters.
Quote:
|
It is humanly impossible for a game to be slower than Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, I'm sorry. I was practically in tears by the time a single AI-controller character had finally moved and acted.
And I read that random encounters can happen, but they're extremely uncommon. I'm not exactly sure how valid my source was though, so take it with a grain of salt. |
Out of curiosity, is the game still as easy to break as FFTA? I enjoyed the first one...but if you had an assassin with concentrate and conceal, you could easily beat the other team (assuming they were AI controlled).
|
As I said earlier, Concentrate has been nerfed, and for good reason; all-around accuracy seems to have been improved substantially. Now it's damage that seems to be affected the most by what direction you attack an enemy, with accuracy only dropping a little bit.
|
It comes out today? Woah, I thought it wasn't gonna drop till July (Near FFIV 3D).
So, worth getting? I enjoyed Advance Wars & their sequels and FFT on the PS1; I wasn't too fond of Tactics Advance, but AFAIK, this doesn't carry over anything from the first game aside from the name & basic gameplay. |
I never had a Playstation of any sort, so I am a virgin to the real FFT. I did play through most of FFTA, though.
From the first post, it doesn't sound THAT much better than FFTA, if at all. I dunno. I'm broke, so I'd just rom it over buying a decent game I'd enjoy more, but I might consider it. Is it more difficult? Will I spend ten years in the fucking menu arranging my jobs and skills and gear in this game like in FFTA? |

Quote:
They will never run out, but it is simply faster to do some repeatable mission over and over again. |
Quote:
As for your second question, it's very likely. I never got terribly far in the original Tactics Advance, but A2 uses nearly the same system but with more... stuff added to it. |
Hard mode is not that challenging, but has its moments.
~1.5x stats, but the usage of any Clan Privileges will pretty much negate the disadvantage you have, especially if you use any of the Power Up privileges. |
Quote:
For the second battle, Razma can just run around using Yell so his speed is crazy. Then Accumulate for 20 rounds and kill him in one hit. Chameleon Robe absorbs his lighting attacks and heals you. FFT was easy once you figured out what attacks/skills the bosses had. |
So basically it's just a baby story stroll through the park. Blah. I'll play it in a couple of years, and just try and unlock extreme difficulty on TWEWY.
That was amusing, Lehah, but I was looking for a comparison to FFTA. |

FFTA wasn't that good when I played it. I only played it with an emulator, so I had access to frameskip. But I'm not sure I would have stuck through it without Frameskip. Even with frameskip, it was just really slow. The laws in the first game also pissed me off, because some of those were ridiculous. |
Quote:
FFTA2 does have a hard mode, but it's just 1.5 to your enemy's stats. |
Well, I think TWEWY will be more fun when I REPLAY it. Upon initial play, I made the mistake of thinking the game was SKILL based, when in fact, it was just a grind like any other RPG.
That and I didn't have a grasp on what pins worked well and what didn't for me. But now I'm in post-game and everything's cake. We'll see. |
Oh. One major problem with this game? No map rotation. Bitch, please.
|

Quote:
Seriously though - all those "building up" skills are super-duper cheap. By the end of FFT, you can have Ramza as a Knight, equipt heavy-ass armor, then equipt Squre skills with Throw Stone and Yell and Foot Up Ass skills and the double-sword skill, so you can carry two giant-ass swords, doing 300+ HP a shot. I purposely try not to "skill stack" my characters into a battle; the lower the challenge the less interesting the game is. The only exception in FFT is really the matches where the entire fucking map is Chocobos. Get out of here with that shit. Yellow ones cast cure on the red ones (who cast flare and fire and dick-fuckery) you're trying to kill to make a hole in their offense. Quote:
The difference between FFT and FFTA is easily described as the same difference between the movies Flesh + Blood and The Neverending Story Part 2. Anyone whos seen both these movies can see what I'm talking about. One is a hardcore, epic slaughter involving a death of empire and kings, as women manipulate fiefdoms and knights fight for the dying and dead impulses of chivalry. It involves nostalgia and ethics and fighting for the love of the wrong woman. Slaves turn to masters as religion turns to conspiracy. The other one involves some dork getting caught in a crappy fantasy cliche. I'm biased against FFTA and thats because it doesn't attempt to be like FFT. I suppose thats a good thing - it would be a more spectacular failure if they tried to make it too close to the original. |
Quote:
As for FFTA2, I have to say I'm impressed. I never made it far into FFTA the first, and the biggest reason why was the godawful menus. In FFTA they crammed what they could onto the screen, but it was a multi-screen process just to make sure all of your characters had what they needed. They very smartly made use o the top screen in the unit menus this time around, making it a lot easier to see at a glance all of the abilities and things that everyone is learning. The bazaar feature is also nice, but there was a reason it worked in FF12: You never HAD to use it. The random luck involved with picking up the right reagants for the new weapons means that I still haven't gotten any new rods for my casters, and that's annoying. Overall, though, I must say I'm quite impressed with how it turned out. The story isn't anything to write home about, but the game still has a great level of polish and an EXTREME amount of depth. At least, looking at it about 2 inches into the game, it looks like it's deep. Additional Spam: Quote:

I welcome more games where we play as the Villain. Too few of those are around nowadays.
|
Started the game last night and played a little bit (two missions done, I think), and so far my feeling is... hmm. I didn't really get very far in FFTA (maybe 1/6 done) though I plan to finish it at some point. The biggest complaint I had from that game was the menus, and while A2 has the advantage of two screens and tries to incorporate them both, I feel as though it's still kind of weird. I like that the law is displayed prominently, but I wonder if they couldn't have occupied the space filled by the huge scrolling move order better.
Fitting rooms and character status in general seems a bit weird to me, so I suppose it just takes some getting used to. Ah well. |
No, I'm with you on the Fitting Room; they really needed to bring back Tactics' Optimize option for it. The only advantage I see to not having Optimize is that it forces you to look through the shop's selection, which ensures that you don't miss any equipment that might offer you new skills for your current job.
|
Quote:
|
Honestly, I don't mind it if a game doesn't take itself too seriously. Some of my favorite moments in Tactics were when the party took a break from Lucavi and did things like, say, activate Worker 8.
As for depth and gameplay, I really don't think you can argue that A2 is lacking in that regard. The second you bust open the menu or take a look at the Bazaar, you see the game is anything but shallow. |
Quote:
And you and I just disagree on what we want in a game. I think the best part of FFT was keeping track of the secondary characters and the world around them. The rise and fall of nations and the literary quality they imbued into the storytelling. It was epic and wonderful. You like robots and slapstick comedy, and that's fine. But there was no reason to turn FFT from what it was into, as LeHah called it, a fantasy cliche. |
The original FFT was early enough RPG wise that it set the fantasy cliche. FFTA, and from the sounds of it FFTA2 both are severely lacking in that department.
|
Quote:
I happen to like that Luso is a bit of an assholish kid. Ramza's timidness is only tolerable for so long. So, yeah, that's kind of why I like Robots and slapstick comedy over "Nobody wants you as king!!". |
Quote:
FFT was a nice self-contained story, well written and solidly executed. FFTA starts out with a book that transports a little boy to a fantasy world. It's the Neverending Story. It's lighthearted and that's great. But that's not FFT. |
Yeah, that's not Final Fantasy Tactics. It's Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
Do you have anything to contribute to A2 discussion, or is this going to continue to diverge towards why Tactics is so awesome? |
Quote:
|
Quit trying to goad me with these little one-liners at the end; it's annoying. You know perfectly well that I'm being reasonable here.
I talk about how they should have reimplemented Optimization in the fitting room and you follow up with a tirade about how they could put so many other things from Tactics in. Well, Final Fantasy Tactics is super and all, but I'm talking about the fitting room. In Final Fantasy Tactics A2. And you're not. |
The original Tactics is a grindfest, actually. Most people just actually cared to do it because of supplementary surrounding world... Neverending Story Advance just doesn't exactly get my grinding boner to rise. By and large, Tactics has flaws, but I think the Judgment System just becomes the gaming level deal breaker for Advance. A2 might surprise given where it's actually taking place, I think the haste of judgment is more in the surface similarities aesthetically to Advance 1 than anything else...
That Judgment shit sounds gay as hell still, though. |
Quote:
|
Well, you stepped on my toes and then expected me to back off, so naturally I'll be defensive. It seems like you're done though, so I'll move on.
I just unlocked the Beastmaster. I like how jobs, up to a certain point, are unlocked through Quests. It's a bonus I enjoy quite a bit. And Rotor, the law crap is annoying, but the rewards are usually pretty nifty. You don't have to go too far out of your way to complete battles without breaking any laws (though "No Ranged Attacks" fucked my shit up). |
Seems, on paper, to be a much more concrete way to establish a transparent strategy and objective... but the shit just rubs me the wrong way. Especially given that Laws only apply to the player and not to the CPU. I mean, it might be designed that way, but limiting variety to me does not equal compelling/interesting gameplay.
I'll need to give it a shot in any case, but at least it won't cost 600 dollars to do so. |
The lack of CPU adherence to the law is the trade-off you take for Clan Abilities and good spoils at the end of each battle (oftentimes in the shape of weapons and armor).
|
I realize that the end result is very intrinsic to gameplay, but I enjoy what I play actively. Judgment and Abilities don't create a solid foundation for just outright well done scenario design. It's certainly not the worst it could be... but FFTA just leaves such a rotten feeling regarding the systems that A2 just seemingly inherits. I am and will remain skeptical, but shit on paper ain't gonna hold up.
|
is it just me or do the touch screen controls suck ass? i try to click on a point about 4 blocks away from my character so he can move there, and i have to keep tapping or drag the stylus to be able to select that square. it gets hard to select squares when there are characters near it.
are there more clan abilities to acquire or do you only get the ones you start with from the mini quiz thing in the beginning? |
Quote:
You get more clan abilities by taking Clan Trials. |
Quote:
|
Quick question about the Bazaar thing. Is it worth it to unlock every single new weapon/armor? I have no idea what the requirements are for the other items. And I don't want to miss any important item because I ran of loot to unlock it with.
Oh and the judge system is annoying as hell. In one of my missions, I couldn't deal more than 50 damage. And by golly, one of my character does a critical hit for 70 damage. how gay. |
I'm pretty sure it's set up so that everything you need to unlock you can unlock with no worries.
Unless you sold off the loot then I guess you'd be screwed. Generally only the highest ranked loot though is the one-of-a-kind type loot that makes a one-of-a-kind item that can't be sold back even if you wanted to sell it back. Most non-exclusive loot can be won in random battles or stolen from enemies. |
Quote:
I will say, though, it's quite frustrating when it comes to armor and rods. My black mage hasn't learned ANYTHING extra yet. Really aggravating. |
Quote:
I don't know if you do this too so here's a tip. You can easily get around a number of odd laws by reequipping your team. And if you have to, change their job class to better suit the situation. This of course can all be done when placing units on the battlefield, after the law is announced. Also, these laws in A2 aren't that bad. At least not at the point I'm at. I think the worst law I've ran into was the one you mentioned. But I remembered just giving everyone weaker weapons and avoided direct sword strikes as much as possible (since they tend to do critical hits more often.) Then again I'm only about 8 hours into the game. I can't wait for battles that use two or more laws at once :gonk:. |
The crappiest law I've seen is No Missing, but it was a part of the Clan Trial. It would've been pathetically easy had it not been for that kind of law.
|
Fuck. Yes that law sucks for the General Training I. I made sure that every single one of my characters either hit from the side or back with 95% hitting rate. But behold, one guy always fucks up. I've actually tried this clan trial three times before I got fed up with it.
|
Yep, the Veteran title for General Training I is frustrating with that "No Miss" crap :gonk:.
It took me three tries, too. First try, I thought having a Speed2 privilege would help but I soon found out what the fairies would do stop that. So I eventually missed despite attacking from behind every turn. Second try I actually ran out of time. There was one fairy left with less than 30HP which any of my mages could eliminate, argh. So on my third try I realized I had to take a risk and use hard hitting moves like Beat Down or Moogle Rush to finish the fairies quickly. Also the Agility privilege helped, I think. Rose all my hit rates to 97% or so. |
Finally, finally, I got a Seeq. For some reason, none of them wanted to appear.
Even now, with only Silence Gas and no Reverse Item, the Ranger is a broken job. All you have to do is set a trap right in front of you, turn your back to the enemy, and watch them waste a turn. It's just mean, and it's only going to get meaner when I get the Stun Needle and Charm traps-- not to mention Reverse Item + Item Lore (just one Hi Potion will do an easy 200 damage to an enemy). |
K, finally got this game.
Mr Rendel -> Anyways, I find this whole baazar to get upgrades kinda annoying. |
Yes,
Spoiler:
Am I the only one who likes the Bazaar? I get new loot all the time, so I get excited and check out the list. Look for a decent item description and the highest ranks I can make, then get started. Very enjoyable to me, even though Black and White Mage gear barely shows up. |
Quote:
I second that statement. So far, I am still stuck with Rod for my b.mage. So doing bazaar only way to obtain new items from stores right? |
A couple things might show up after certain plot points, but the vast majority of the shop's inventory comes from the Bazaar.
|
Quote:
When it comes to the clan trials, I've always been going for the third option down... if I re-do the trial later at a higher rank, does the reward start over again? Like, if the reward for rank 3 was +8 X and -5 Y, and the reward for rank 5 is +16 X and -10 Y, will I get +16/-10 or +8/-5 (the part of the rank 5 reward I HAVEN'T gotten yet)? I basically don't have the confidence to actually try it yet. >_> |
Quote:
As for liking the bazaar feature. I don't mind it, I think it's a slight step forward than what the last two tactics games did. |
Haven't played since the first Tactics, but WTF:
No "Best Fit" in the fitting room? Laws regarding races without explaining what race your characters are? "New Abilities Learned." Great. Who? What did they learn? And what, this is based on what weapon they weild? Fuck that. |
The game has its flaws, but the ones you listed aren't the ones I'd be worried about.
1) We were talking about Optimize earlier. Because of the skill mastery system, the optimize feature is kind of distracting. I do miss it in very specific cases, though. 2) If you don't know which races are which, it takes a very simple and quick flip through the booklet to the game. For newcomers, I believe this is why laws regarding races aren't used until you're well on your way through the game. 3) The New Abilities Learned thing is just a notice to open your Unit Info menu. Once you open it, characters who have mastered new skills will be jumping up and down instead of just standing there (and they will continue to jump until you scroll down the equipment list and actually see what was learned). Very little room to not notice who learned what. Quote:
But now that you mention it, yeah, Knives have been an absolute nightmare to find. Been stuck with a Scramasax and that one knife Adelle joins with. |
Quote:
The lack of "Best Fit" is pretty crappy, though. My main issues with the game are spells/abilities going into action instantly, no rotating the map, and EXP/AP being awarded after the battle's over rather than after each action. The Bazaar is a neat idea, but I wish they'd still given different towns different items. I'm still really enjoying the game despite all the negatives. Luso isn't a wuss like Marche, and that's enough to satisfy me. EDIT: Generic edited. :argh: |
Quote:
Aside from that negative the only other one is the sheer rarity of getting into a random battle (not quest battles.) So far it has only happened to me twice *crap.* I've been getting random recruitments way more often. Mostly Nu Mou characters. Not that I mind~ I prefer mage job classes. Well, until I run into the classic No-Nu-Mou-Action-Abilities law. |
Quote:
That said, I'm about 18 hours into MARCHE YOU DICK 2 and I love it. 0 complaints. The "No X Race Action" Law is a new one but that's easily avoided by having a little you know, variety in your damn party. Adelle ain't even half bad either. The real stars of the game are Viera though. Not even gonna lie. Bangaa come in close for the Dragoon/Gladiator/Defender classes. SUPER EDIT: I hope that at some point down the road I don't kick my own ass for not doing Veteran during General Training I. I went for Professional and actually ended up clearing it in under the 3 round requirement for Veteran but couldn't be assed to go back and redo it. |

That's what you get for not playing the first one AND not reading the manual. What the fuck, who does that.
"Man I have no idea what this game is about OH WHAT THIS IS CRAP WHY ISN'T EVERYTHING EXPLAINED TO ME" "Because they already did that in the first game." "0/10!" |
What difficulty did you guys choose, normal or hard? I hate when a game makes you choose that at the beginning, and then you can't change it without starting a new game.
I'm a bit over 6 hours in, and I'm completely addicted. Rods and knives are indeed hard to come by; my poor black mage can finally learn something other than his base 3 spells. I could seriously sit there all day mixing combinations in the bazaar. |
I picked normal mode since I read the only difference was something about enemies doing 1.5x damage.
My black mage is still stuck with the three base spells, but I did finally get a rod with a second white spell. I've actually got more summoner stuff than mage stuff. |
Heard the guide for this is supposed to be released this week. Anyone have any of DAT GAMING NEWS?

Dunno about a guide, but I do know that the Clan Bowen quests are officially the most lulziest/epic thing ever.
Minor Klesta related stuff.:

Third time is the charm.

omg i hate the second stage of the camoa cup. the laws are fucked, i can't use MP but the enemy can bypass the laws with no consequences. it's a stupid way to try to make the game more difficult. i prefer the law system from tactics advance, this one is just plain stupid and i imagine it'll get even more retarded as i progress through the game.
how do you get more characters? i've completed about 15 quests already and none have joined my party. |
Hello everyone, I'm new here.
I finished the game about to days ago...not anywhere near done with the quest though. I must commence square for making a final boss that requires your units to be in the 50s. Seriously I'm a vet for tactics games and I won with the main character left with 123/400+ health left....all my other units had died via giga dust(130 damage on all units, he does it often...to often). Anyone beat all those kings yet? I beat them all by the time I was level 35. After beating the game there is a mission that has you fight all of them at the same time..but there level 99 T_T. If anyone beats it tell me what you get for it lol...I'm hoping that the reward is something better then sequencer or tourneqol (mispelled). Even though those items pawn... Also..ITs extremely hard to come by loot for the items required to learn last level spells for your blackmage. My black mage knows all the "Daras" and only has thundaga and thats after completing the game. EDIT: I'm so angry right now =.=. Efing monster broke my master monks judicer coat and I failed the speed battle...NEXT time I'll be sure to obliterate the other team before going after the monster.. >_< |

It's much akin to how all the stateside Fire Emblems after 7 start off with the assumption that the player has a basic knowledge of the series itself. Sure there are optional tutorials for those who happen to be new, but this kind of thing is standard fare for SRPGs. That being said, again; why are you playing the sequel without having played the first. Also, it never hurts to RTFM. That's why that acronym exists. The fucking manual, read it. |
Quote:
It's not like they give you info on how to do things within the game or such.... Plus as far as things go, that's one of the primary reasons it's called a sequal, as in, it expects for you to know info from the first one more or less. Basically I'm piggybacking on the statement, because it's true. :p |
Quote:

Still 3 hours into the game and I'm liking it.
Well, it could use some bouncing titties. |

Exactly my point. They get rid of in-game tutorials and still someone complains. I'll take the option of looking at the manual over mandatory in-game tutorials any day.
Level 25 now, just beat the Red King. Sequencer is a mean knightsword, and the description seems to indicate there's even more to it. |
Someone's gotta be the lowest common denominator (sup, Lukage). Game's not too bad so far. I'm not on Hard though, as I can't dedicate the time to that mode. Is there anything specific to Hard Mode?
|
Quote:
Ended up using both of my eureka crystals and barely survived the red king's attacks every turn. Constant back attacks with White Monks and Hunter's Sonic Booms made it all possible. At least I got enough gil to pretty much buy whatever I want. I'm not even going to take on the lv.55 king until I'm in the more advanced job classes. And I STILL lack the ninja, master monk and the scholar job classes. Anyway, I'm currently at level 30~32. Learning all sorts of Arcane and Summoning magic type stuff. Physical fighters are currently a mixture of fusiliers, moogle knights, paladins, defenders, monks and fighters. |

Where are these Seeq niggers at. I'm at around 30 hours 60+ quests and haven't seen one yet.
Lollin at the Clan Trails though. I forgot all about them while I was around questing, having done 3 near the beginning, and now that I had a few moments I just went back and did around 5 or so, including two of the combination ones. "Kill two monsters in two rounds." "Aight." :: one hit kill:: :: one hit kill:: "Done." So overpowered it hurts. :tpg: It's unfair to be able to wait so long to do these. |

And the clan trails. In hindsight the only reason I'd do as many clan trails as possible is to get the shop discounts early on. And, maybe, to get the extra loot each battle gives you. |
Fuck its annoying leveling.

I'm glad some of my struggles aren't unique to me. It's maddening being only one Thief action ability away from the Ninja job and not having any equipment in the foreseeable future that can grant it.
Adelle just joined the group and, considering the nuisance she was, I basically said "Screw you, have fun being a soldier for a while lolz". I FINALLY got a staff that grants a second white mage ability (Cura), so now my nu mou will eventually be able to be something besides a white/black mage or a beastmaster (:tpg:). There was a lot for me to learn (and relearn) since I only played the original Tactics and next to none of the more recent FF games, but I'm liking it so far. Is it still not for a while that people come looking to join your clan? I figured it was that but maybe there's something else I'm not doing right. I completed all the clan trials thus far at the middle difficulty. Speaking of clan trials, I've had my share of BS on them too. One of them had the law of not being allowed to attack units two or more squares away, but the loopholes for violations were infuriating. Two in particular: 1. Not so much BS, just mean. One of my group got charmed and she decided to try Sleep on some people. 2. I crit one of the baddies with a standard attack, which resulted in a KO. Sweet, right? Wrong. It knocked them back, and that apparently caused a violation. And, in case someone hasn't pointed it out before, laws forbidding abilities that don't consume MP does not include standard attacks or Counter. I wasn't sure at first and the discovery was quite a relief. |
Just beat Blue King Bliu a little while ago at level 34. Surprisingly... not that difficult. He has an annoying spell that hits with earth magic(k) then follows up with a couple of physical hits against anyone in range, but he can't use it often. I think he ends up being a bit easier because of your larger mastery of advanced jobs, so go in there and pummel him with a Fighter and Templar. I haven't tried fighting Green King yet.
Also, everyone, be sure to Loot him. I used Loot Level 3 (with my new Bandit's Gloves or whatever they're called to slightly increase steal rates) and nabbed Godwood, which is probably the last item all of you need to make a Malbow. It's a Rank A weapon, so I think it's sort of an early shot at nabbing a really nice bow. |
You beat the Blue King at 34? Man I need to stop wussing out then. My main 6 are all around 40 now, but I saw he was a level 55 and decided to wait a little bit. ;_;
55 hours and 141 missions in here, and I just got a Seeq. I've two Gria's for a bit, which I'm thankful for since they can travel so much further than everyone else and tear shit up. Good for the mountain range missions. Noticing that Bangaa have been beefed up this time around too. Well, not so much beefed up but they got some really good additional classes since they were already good bruisers before. Master Monk is pretty awesome, and Cannoneer comes with Ether Shell, which is invaluable if you have Illusionists/Summoners/Turbo MP people on your team. Final note: LOOOOOOL @ the cat eared hood Seers wear, and I got the Ragetsu-denbu (Dual Wield ability ninja sword) for being Area Champ over in the Goug area. I had all four areas won, not sure if that's a requirement. |

No Items is the law, so MP draining is okay. However, it's easier to just blast the shit out of him and kill him rather than let him linger while draining his MP. The problem is getting people to reach him in time.
Just made a Nail Bow, which teaches Rangers the Mirror Item skill. And so it begins. |
Holy FUCK everyone needs a Master Monk with Cross-counter, stat. It's pretty much the best thing ever since everyone and their mother has Counter midway through the game and it allows you to rape them with no remorse. It looks like it does double damage+ and negates the enemy Counter. So sweet.
Just got a little further in the story (too many side quests ._.) and finally got that lil' Moogle named Hurdy. Best name ever. He's so cute too, can I take him home. |
Quote:
My question now is what armor or weapon teaches my monk Cross-counter? You're probably a bit farther than me by now. I just met Hurdy but then I decided to go side questing again. NOW I'm stuck in this battle tower-like place fighting all sorts of monsters. This is what I get for reading all those notices D: |
Quote:
Also, If you're talking about the tower in Grazston, I wouldn't do it. The monsters at the top are all level 90 or so. How far are you anyways? I'm at 70hrs/190 missions right now, up to the story mission "A Request", which is three after Hurdy's mission in the timeline. |
Ah ok, I just need the loot then.
Anyway, yeah. It's that tower. Curiosity got the best of me. I was doing well up until the first watch area where I thoroughly got my ass kicked before I could make the first move. That rabbit could rip a tank apart :tpg:. (most of my team is at lv.40 or lv.39. The guys on the first watch floor were all lv.50. Yeah, I got raped.) On the up side I did gain a few levels and lots of rare loot inbetween each battle. |
I got Fanatic in Camoa's Auction House. Not sure if the prizes are randomized between all Houses, but it's a start I guess.
I just made the Katana that teaches Dual Wield, so I'm trying to learn that. I've run out of things to teach my Seeq though, so I'm considering moving ahead in the story a bit faster to unlock Viking. I hear Lanista isn't until very late into the game, though. :( |
Oh yeah, that's where I got it. Excellent work, GameBoy.
As for the Lanista, I just got a quest called Lanista's Pride, which I can confirm is the mission to get the class. Presumably because it unlocked with the rest of the quests I unlocked after doing the story mission "A Request". A Request is the first block of 5-E in the Quest Report if you need a gauge of how close or far you are. EDIT: Same goes for the Ravager class. EDIT2: Ahahahaha, once you teach Cid Ultima Sword the game is essentially over. Overpowered SO BAD. If you haven't been taking on Chita's missions (Chita On X speed battles) you need to. After the third one you get the Materia Blade, and holy wow is Ultima Sword amazing. Takes 32 MP to cast, but if you've got someone with Ether Shell this is no problem. Cid (or any Bangaa/Gladiator for that matter) can just walk up to people and destroy their FACES in one hit, from the front even! Jesus. |
I'm on Sleepless Nights, the last quest in 3-C. That's not too bad, then. I may burn through after all, just picking up other job quests along the way. I need to figure out when exactly I can start the secret character sidequests.
|
Well, I did exactly that and beat the game last night. Seriously, this game is... is the Seinfeld of Final Fantasy-- there is no overall story; just various encounters the characters stumble into until the conclusion. It made absolutely no sense. At least the final boss was respectably difficult.
I also read up on the character sidequests and have everyone except Spoiler:
There is something in the air. Can you not feel it?:
Unique moogle characters are disappointing because of their lack of access to Chocobo Knight. Certainly not a deal-breaker, but it's not making me like moogles any more than I do right now. I thought Cid having a bangaa jobset was weird, but it turns out Spoiler:

Sounds like Penelo is
Spoiler:
Also yeah, there is more or less no heavy plot this time, but that's mainly what peoples complaint about the last one was, that the story was too serious. Can't complain there. The side quest characters are all entertaining enough if you do them all, especially since so many of them are like mini stories of their own. From the Bonga Bugle chapters, to chasing the Prima Donna Devotees down to eventually fighting alongside PD themselves (which was cool), to stuff like the tale of Sir Luc Sardarc and his Blademaster companion Frimelda. There's really too many to name. I liked the ones where you helped the Viera that wanted to keep the Wyrm as a pet though. Lulzy. Also, I ran into Spoiler:
Witch of the Fens is hot, don't deny it. Don't deny it! <3 Viera. |
I'm so behind you guys so I'm doing my best to not read your posts :tpg:.
I've about spent 55 hours (110 missions done) in the game and I still haven't progressed much at all since my last post. But I did run into the 4 commanders of duelhorn or whatever they're called. Stole that ninja's Tabi shoes too so I'm feeling pretty good. I'll beat this game some day! |
Ahahaha, so sorry Kai. I just have too much free time on my hands.
More awesome to be found though, as the conclusion to Blademaster Frimelda's story has you Spoiler:

Yeah, yeah, late reply. |

Edit: 280 Quests done! I believe there's 300 total, so now comes the part where I run around forever trying to figure out how to get the last couple of quests unlocked. Fighting the Kings at level 99 at the same time is going to be all kinds of anger inducing, I'm sure. Can't wait to take on that mission. |

On another note... Spoiler:
|
Why would you do that. ;_; Adelle has a ton of potential.
|
As for my Adelle, I immediately changed her from a thief to a Soldier/Fighter/Ninja, so she has the highest attack power out of my group, and currently level 55. But now I'm changing gears and putting her into mage jobs with the ultimate goal of making her a Blue Mage. I think Blue Mage/Heritor or vice-versa would be a pretty good balance. In fact, why don't we say how we're raising our team? Spoiler-marking special characters, of course. Luso - Paravir/Thief Paravir is greatly overrated, but Ninja has terrible skills and I need something faster than a Paladin. Adelle - Blue Mage/Heritor See above. Blue Magick rocks. Noah (Seeq) - Lanista/Ranger Lanista for regular damage-dealing, but traps and Mirror Item for when I want to get through battles the cheesy way. Cid - Master Monk/White Monk, usually switched out for someone else Chakra, Inner Focus, Earth Rend, Pummel, Holy Sign. Ton of great skills in both jobs. The rest of the party:
|
I did too many sidequests before meeting up with Adelle, and she was kind of underleveled compared to the rest of the team. Also, there was a small bit of paranoia stemming from after playing Valkyrie Profile 2 where everybody winds up leaving with half of my stuff. Not good times. I'll probably place her in my secondary team now that I have most of the ability-granting equipment.
Regarding the Name:

I believe you're thinking of Llednar, who isn't in this game. Lennart is just some Hunter with a unique face portrait.

Dang it, I got excited... really exited. Am I the only one who actually enjoyed FFTA storyline and hated FFTA2 storyline? FFTA2 seems.... way too short. |
I think you're mostly alone in that you liked either of them. The only things those stories have going for them is that their protagonists are assholes ("GET BACK IN THE WHEELCHAIR" and "I HIT GIRLS").
|
They are both fucking awesome in their own ways, Marche and Luso.
Reporting in that finally after 120 hours, I have completed all 300 missions! Anybody else going for the 300 club? :3333: All I have left to do now is get the 13th and final Scion, which only shows up randomly during the "Of a Feather" monster battle in Goug, or so I'm told. That and climbing those damnable towers. Onward! |
Quote:
Congrats! :edgarrock: I am trying to unlock god damn pravir (how ever you spell it), but ;_; I can't find the damned quest. |
If it helps, the name of the quest is "The Eastwatch." I think it shows up either when you're able to fly to Ordalia, or after you already do so (the battle is at the Moorabella aerodome).
I'm at 208 quests completed, but I'm shooting for all 300. Not sure if I care that much about Brightmoon Tor, but I'll probably end up doing it. |
The game refuses to end. Really. I got that last scion, so I decided to do Brightmoon Tor and holy shit. It's easy enough because the first three monsters in the first couple floors of the first two towers are only level 50 or so, the top ones are 90 like I said earlier. The problem is they can cast haste/protect/shell on their entire crew and move several times before you at the start of the match.
I highly suggest bringing along a Red Mage/Summoner with Doublecast/Phoenix and an Angel Ring, equipped with Halve MP and Evade Magick. They all have long range spells you'll need dodging. Equip everyone you can with Ribbons and Orb of Minwus. Counter on everyone you're not using as a caster. Once you survive the initial onslaught it more or less becomes reviving everyone that died and taking out the haste casters, then working on the rest. The first two towers are easy enough, the third where the monsters are all level 75 is where it gets tough. The final guardian makes up for it by being a breeze if you're prepared enough. After that there's "The Final Quest", a five round tourney against all Level 99 teams. The first is of course the Cinquleur, but since they're in close range this time you can pretty much just beat the shit out of them before they start double casting you to death. Second round is more of the same, third round is 2 Beastmasters with a Headless, a > 999HP Drake, and two Sprites. Brightmoon Tor strategy applies here, same with the fourth battle which is A Juggler, a Seer, a Ranger and TWO fucking Tonberry Kings. If you can survive losing at least four people to the 999HP Karma attack, the rest just involves revive and kill. Fifth battle is nothing of note though. And with that, I am truly finished with FFTA2. Good luck to anyone else going for 100%, you'll need it! My final 6 Man Team: Spoiler:
|
I got my CycloDS in the mail today [whoo!] so I'm finally able to start playing this. I've finished the first quest and the bunch of tutorials that come along with it, and I think I'm finally 'free' to start picking up quests.
Any tips for someone just starting off? Anything I might miss that you can't pick up later? Stuff like that? |
Quote:
Now it's complicated, so pay attention. When you go to start the game? Don't. Instead, turn on a PSX and play Final Fantasy Tactics. Awesome. |
Don't listen to Deni. He's just angry that none of the characters has a neckbeard.
|
Quote:
GET BACK IN THE FUCKING CHAIR, NUTTY. |
Quote:
The only things I wish I knew earlier in the game than I did were how the bazaar works and the time-saving of dispatching units for quests. The rest was easy enough and came after enough play to familiarize with the systems. |
Thanks for the tip. :3:
And Deni, I'm already in another playthrough of the original FFT [emulated] on my PSP. |
The Shining Lute is pretty hard to miss if you're reading the dialogue. Hurdy asks if you could go and get the extra loot needed for another instrument, so you're already given a heads-up that there's another item out there.
|
So, I gave the wireless trade-raffle thing a go for the first time last night, and got a Madu (Doublecast for Red Mage for those who don't know). :twitch: Is this feature pretty advantageous, or did I just get really lucky?
And...is it a bad thing for stat growth that I'm trying to get everyone to learn as much as possible (blue magick being the only exception for the most part)? Granted, the actual leveling is not going that fast for me (everybody's 35 or 36), so I don't know. |
If you level up in all the jobs, you'll end up with people who're all-around average-- no strengths, no weaknesses. There's no real benefit to mastering all jobs, so you may as well make it kind of easy on yourself and focus on specific roles for your party (a faster, thief-type character; a mage; a physical fighter; etcetera).
As for the wireless stuff, I haven't tried it. Madu isn't exactly a pain in the ass to get (easy to make and shows up often in auctions), so it seems like the raffle thing might just be a way to get certain weapons earlier. |
So I finally got all 300 quests done. I'll probably do Brightmoon Tor and the other oddjob quests when I'm bored, but I think I'm mostly done with the game. My final party:
Spoiler:

I also finished 300 quests not too long ago. All I need to do is finish is the last Brightmoon Tor tower and the Final Quest for completion.

At the risk of a possible post deletion, I'm wondering if anybody here who also has a knack for liking the music could help me out with this:
SQEX-10102~3: Final Fantasy Tactics A2 The Sealed Grimoire Original Soundtrack - VGMdb Forums I bought the OST and I'm in the middle of ripping it in lossless FLAC, and I'm a bit stuck on those two things. |
