GFF Soundtrack - General Game Music
Update:
Selection is all done and submitted! Tracklist is located at the bottom of this post. Hey everybody, It seems I am supposed to create a thread so we, the general game music enthusiast can coordinate an album to represent this forum. Sounds fun? Then keep reading. Things to take note of:
Questions, comments? Still lost? Just post here! Otherwise start nominating! General Game Music Tracklist:
|
I think this is a good idea, but the existence of the other gaming forums kinds of throws things off. So here's my proposal:
we put, on this album, the rarest shit we have on it and still make it sound good. If we keep it to relatively unknown stuff like the tracks that appear in the SOTW we can make it stand out above the other gaming CDs. |
How many nominations can(should) one upload?
|
I see what you mean.
Depending on what happens we may be able to merge General Game Music, Mario's Warp Room, Microsoft's Window, Sony Scape, and General PC Gaming forums as one album. Of course this depends how much participation is gathered. For now I'll stick with Capo's arrangement, we have to at least give this thread a few days to settle. As for choosing the rarest songs from everyone's collection, I can't see why that wouldn't work; I think it becomes more of the matter of choosing stuff we all can agree on. Maybe we even could go as far as nominate a few of the past top SOTW entries. I don't know, just brainstorming here. Quote:
|
Quote:
Nevertheless, I have plenty of stuff I could nominate for that CD. The rarest shit is a good idea. :D |
Quote:
|
I'd definitely like to take part. I agree that choosing SotW-type songs (even past SotW placers) would be a good idea. 10 minutes for each person might be a bit much, though; I think (er, hope) that more than 7 1/2 people would nominate.
|
Quote:
EDIT: Should have read Mucknuggle's post before asking that. o___o Anyway I'll see what I can find and upload them to you according to rules. |
Quote:
Personally, I think it's a good general idea to follow, but not absolutely necessary. If one or two tracks from an obscure Nintendo game make it I don't think anyone is going to cry about it. Double Post: Just for comparison, here's the last ST's tracklist: Burai Prototype - Isshuku Sokuhatsu! Breath of Fire IV - Opening Beyond Good and Evil - Home Sweet Home Robo Aleste - Final Battle Katamari Damacy - The Moon and the Prince Dune Spice Opera - Wake Up Call of Duty - Call of Duty Phantasy Star Online - Tricktrack Part 2 Megaman 3 - Snakeman Mario & Zelda Big Band Live - Super Mario 64 Opening & Stage 1 Theme Guilty Gear Isuka - The Cat Attached To The Rust Uncharted Waters II - Dance on a Cape of Good Hope Metal Slug 5 - Windy Day Chrono Trigger - Last Battle Secret of Evermore - Variations Of Castle Ace Combat 5 - Razgriz / The Warsaw Philharmonic Treasure Master - Title Grand Turismo 2 - Moon Over the Castle MechWarrior 2 - Background Music 1 GötzenDiener - Graveyard Labyrinth Ratchet & Clank Going Commando - Distribution Facility ~Planet Smolg~ The Sword of Xuan Yuan - Story 31 Unreal Tournament 2004 - Hyperblast Redux Sonic Adventure REMIX - Unknown Zuntata - Daddy Mulk Megaman 2 - Bubbleman Stage Klonoa 2 - Stepping Wind Ys IV - Walking the Path of Legend Wild Arms Alter Code F - War Demon Spin Jam - In-game Music 1 Neorude 2 - Tomorrow of Promise (Last Battle) -Aka- - To the West Simcity 4 - Oasis From what I remember, this list is basically a mix of SOTW winners (including all of week 3), favorites from various VGM contests, tracks various regulars nominated, along with a couple of random stuff I threw on to make it more complete. |

It's a rule because there are already three other albums out there for 1st party music.
|
Perhaps it means we're not allowed to nominate stuff that is already covered by another forum, like the Sony one, the Nintendo one or the RPG forum. This is only logical, but where does my precious hentai game music fit in? Western-dominated General PC Gaming? ;__;
|
We should do this exactly like we did last time. It worked just fine. The RPG forum and General Video Gaming had their own albums, and there were no problems that I am aware of.
I will be uploading my song soon. |
If by worked fine you mean the entire album was dominated by these two forums, than ok. The guidelines are pretty clear. This forum is ONLY for multi-platform game music.
|
Whatever you guys say is fine with me in the end.
|
Hmm, would PC music be counted as a single platform? Would PC music therefore be ineligible unless ports were made to Mac and Linux?
|
EDIT: By only multi-platform console games go here, you seriously mean ONLY? Where do arcade games go?
|
Quote:
Quote:
|
Okay, thanks. I think I know what I'm gonna upload now.
|
I sent you my tracks - it's a lot, but anything helps.
|
With people already uploading songs to your ftp, how are we going to decide what songs make the album?
|
Quote:
|
Please post your nominations in here as well. Simply uploading a bunch of songs gets nothing done.
|
Quote:
Burnout 2: Point of Impact - Crystal Summit Peak Kingdom Hearts - Hollow Bastion Kingdom Hearts II - Sinister Shadows Phantasy Star Online - A Song for Eternal Story Phantasy Star Online - From Seeing the Rough Wave Phantasy Star Online - Mother Earth of Dishonesty Part2 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - A Prisoner Seeking an Escape Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Chaos in the Zoo Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - The Tower of Dawn Prince of Persia: Warrior Within - Explore the Catacombs The Simpsons: Hit & Run - Mission 15 The Simpsons: Hit & Run - Theme 9 Since the rules for this part of the compilation are not as strict as other sections, that's what I picked. |
1. Prince of Persia ~ The Sands of Time Rip (by Cubed): 31 - Tower of Dawn - 5:02 (Note that this is Cubed's rip; the OST version is butchered)
2. Biohazard (Resident Evil) 2 Original Soundtrack: 18 - Ada's Theme - 1:23 3. Metal Gear Solid 2 The Other Side: 09 - Yell ''Dead Cell'' - 2:00 4. Soul Calibur II: 1-11 - Eternal Struggle - 3:35 |
Okay.

Thanks for covering my ass while I was away Capo =p.
And thanks to everyone that took the incentive to start nominating. Technically there is no limit as to how much you can nominate (I just said 10 minutes worth of music since its probable given with the number of participants.) Depending on the way it turns out I will most likely get back to you to narrow down your choices. Quote:
The reasoning behind it is the other forums are technically covering the main 1st-party games. Basically anything that is not covered by the other gff VGM soundtracks is allowed here. One good example of this would be the ability to nominate Sega music. Quote:
::sigh:: After more thinking I can see the odd loophole. Even if it were on a PC and wonderswan would the game be allowed in both the General PC games and General Game Music? Or only the former? I guess I'll bring that to Capo's attention. Though If it were completely up to me I would allow it, as it is on more than one platform. Quote:
Quote:
In such a event, some form of elimination (voting probably) would be done. Not sure quite yet what that might be. Maybe a quick and painful tournament of Chopper Challenge will settle things. Each loser automatically surrenders one or two minutes to the victor, depending on the number of participants :tpg:. I'm kidding. Double Post: Just a note. Sorry for the jumbled mess I call the first post of this thread. Its been updated, it should make my intentions a little more clear. Or not >_> Anyway, carry on. |
Only one nomination on my side, from Clover Heart's. The game's multiplatform for PC and PS2, I hope it goes in here. I'll see if something else comes to my mind the next days.
Clover Heart's Complete Tracks - looking for a Clover Heart's - Manyo (3:31) |
I'm only nominating one track... Kahimi Karie - Blue Orb from the Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy (We <3 Katamari) Soundtrack. I hope you guys include this. :D
|
Where do H-games fall in all this?
|
What platform are they for? Genre of game doesn't determine eligibility.
If it's a PC game, then... err... on to the PC section I guess. |
The limitation on 1st-party games is pretty restrictive but I can sort of understand the rationale. I guess there go any hopes for nominating stuff from obscure PC games, especially non-English ones. Maybe I'll put in something for PC gaming instead but then... Fortunately, some of the older Ultima and Dune games were ported to the NES/SNES and Sega CD respectively so I could always fall back on those.
|
Quote:
On a similar note, I think Heroes of Might and Magic 4 - Hope and Ace Combat 5 - Reprisal deserve space on our CD for their success in last year's BSE contest (along with a Simcity track of some kind) even though they are technically ineligible. |
No. Music from games for the PC go on the PC Gaming soundtrack. How hard is this?
|
From the PC gaming CD thread:
"#5: No obscure Japanese hentai dating sim thingies. While I realize some of the music is good, we want to keep an image of recognition." I think that answers our H-game question. I would just like to add that if we do not have any H-game music on the CD I will be very disappointed. |
Wait. H-Game music is on the PC, right? If I'm not mistaken, I'm going to have to lay down the law over in the PC Game thread.
|
Since the RPG album is now killed . . .
1. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Atmosphere 6 |
Quote:
IKUSABI O.S.T. - A Broken Heart [replacement for To the West] Mama-san's Volley - Let Your Breasts Bounce - - Shinobu, Depressed at 15 (Shinobu's Theme) Muv-Luv - Ambush Poteneko Academy - New year's celebration Discuss. |
Some ancient classics that were surprisingly released on platforms other than PC. Was considering of nominating the 29s Sea Shanty theme from Ultima VII: The Black Gate but resisted the temptation. Will upload songs latest end of the week.
EDIT: Managed to find another nomination. Added it to my current list. Ultima VI: The False Prophet (Game Rip) - Track 3 - "Bootup (Roland SCC-1)" This track was recorded using the Roland SCC-1 soundcard. U6 was released for DOS, SNES and Commodore 64. Always thought it was for DOS and Mac. Currently my favourite piece of the three. Ultima VI: The False Prophet (Game Rip) - Track 2 - "Character Creation (Roland SC-8850)" Recorded with the Roland SC-8850. Dune Original Game Audio - Track 7 - "Map of Arrakis" Some might find this familiar... This is from Rimo's rip. Apparently, Dune doesn't go into PC gaming because it was also released for Sega CD. Freedom Fighters Original Soundtrack - Track 6 - "The Battle for Freedom" Forgot this was also released on multiple platforms. Rather enjoyed this track. |
Okay, so the PC Gaming Thread can keep their image of recognition for all I care. Additionally to Clover Heart's, I'll nominate two more tracks from multiplatform games:
Eien no Aselia Soundtrack - Fairy's act Clannad Original Soundtrack - Hurry, Starfish |
Quote:
"Pink Planet Love ~Love is the Atmospheric Gravity of Dreams~" from Majokko de' GO♪ GO♪ ~Paul and Mira ★ Kuru's Epic Battle~ "c_01 fantasyland" from the first disc of Chrono Forest Stories ~Tear~ Soundtrack "Are you fierce ?" from Hunks Work Shop! |
I've updated the rules once again. And yes, RPG music is allowed on this album :). Just keep in mind that it cannot be a 1st party title (ie Super Mario RPG.)
And I suppose H-game music is ok provided it is a multi-platform title. And for some of you that are nominating please provide a http link for those tracks or upload them to my ftp (which is now open.) Quote:
If that's the case, then I can't allow your nomination (as much as I like to :(.) |
Quote:
Which is probably for the best, since I'd have to drop a track or two from my PC list to fit one or two of these in. :( Quote:
|
Since the RPG part of the soundtrack died I'm sending you two more songs. They're listed along with the other tracks I posted on the first page.
|
Here's an idea: what if we made our entire CD H-game music? I think it'd be hilarious, especially since I'm sure we can find an hour of really good H-VGM.
|
Quote:
BUT Having such an album would require not only the creation of an H-game forum, but also that forum's retroactive addition to the soundtrack project. :( EDIT: Whoops, didn't read that carefully enough. You meant to make this CD all H-game music and not an entirely new CD. :( That one will be a lot harder, since we'd have to get a whole bunch of people to agree. Plus it'd probably make a lot of the non-H nominators a bit cranky to see all their picks discarded. |
Hmm...this is harder than the company-specific forums. I suppose that's cause I was trying to think of current multi-platform titles, rather than say, Genesis games.
Beyond Good & Evil - Dancing with Domz Beyond Good & Evil - Hyllian Suite Burnout 2 - Title Freedom Fighters - Main Title Some well-known oldies: Ristar (Genesis) - Ring Rink Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Mystic Cave Zone Streets of Rage 2 - Go Straight EDIT: Something from DDR: Burning Heat! (3 Option MIX) |
Not enough nominators.
Quote:
:cow: Oh yeah, I've compiled a list of nomination I've obtained so far. If your nomination is not in here its most likely because its not eligible or you did not upload a copy to me. No rush though, since no real time limit is set! Nominations as of April 4th:

The OST version is extremely short at 1:34. cubed's rip is better. |

Whoops sorry for those typos, its corrected on my end.
I'll edit my posts in a minute or two. edit: Also removed CHz's nomination for "To the West" as it was in the GFF soundtrack last year. If you need a reference list as to what VGM titles were entered last year. Just read below: Originally posted by el jacko:

Whoops, I forgot there were other PSO soundtracks out there.
But since you say you don't have it I'll send it to you sometime. :) |
Question: I kind of forgot Dune Spice Opera - Wake Up was nominated last year. :P One of my nominations, "Map of Arrakis" is actually the original track "Wake Up" is based on. So does that make "Map of Arrakis" ineligible?

Anyway, I nominate: Left Hand of Darkness :: Hiroki Kikuta :: 9 of 17 :: Sakura Relaxation Soundtrack Rain Waltz :: Yoko Kanno :: 13 of 23 :: Napple Tale vol 1 Illustrated Guide to the Fairies High-Tension Wire :: Hiroki Kikuta :: 8 of 20 :: Seiken Densetsu 3 Original Sound Version :: Disc 3 of 3 If you need uploads, just ask. |

And about your nominations. Yes, upload them as soon as possible! Same goes for anyone else that made nominations and didn't upload or provide a link to them. |

As long as its not the exact same track as "Wake Up" and its used in-game then it is eligible. edit: Heh, I should've read your last post more carefully. I got Map of Arrakis confused and thought that was the arranged track. Sorry! Anyway, as I said. The track is in the nomination pool. As long as Elorin gets it to me! |
I've uploaded two more tracks
6-o'Clock Bell of the Morning Watch from Salem no Majo Tachi and Farewell - The Way Home for Two People from Puppet Princess. |
Okay, I've uploaded my three nominations. The audio quality of the U6 tracks is probably better than what was more commonly available in the day. Roland is apparently quite formidable when it comes to soundcards (although I tend to prefer the SB AWE32).
|
1. Wild West, from TimeSplitters 2
2. Harbor, from James Bond 007 in Agent Under Fire 3. Cryosleep (ITG Cut), from In The Groove 2* (YSI) 4. Bouff (ITG Cut), from In The Groove* (YSI) 5. Eternal Struggle, from Soul Calibur II [IN-GAME VERSION, NOT OST VERSION]* 6. Hubris, from Soul Calibur II [IN-GAME VERSION, NOT OST VERSION]* 7. The Great Gianna Sisters, by Machinae Supremacy (remix of the theme from the C64 game) *For the Machinae Supremacy ITG songs, if they make the cut, ask me for the game versions. For the Soul Calibur II songs, if they make the cut, ask me for the direct extraction version (the MP3's I linked to were from my incomplete line-in recording). |
Thank you for the nominations Elorin, neo, and Teioh.
I will update the nomination list tomorrow :). Quote:
|
I've uploaded my 4th (and last) nomination to your FTP, Kairyu. It's a track from Freedom Fighters. Also updated my list in my original post.
|
updates
Quote:
I'm not too sure if I should let The Great Gianna Sisters track slide as it wasn't used in a game. If it was, let me know and I'll reconsider it :). And yes if you have the game versions to the ITG tracks, upload them as soon as possible! You made a direct extraction rip on the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur II? If its not too much to ask, could you upload a copy of that to my ftp? >.> Ok! The nomination pool has been updated again. Also, I've added direct links to all the nominations. Should make sampling a little easier for everyone. Anyway, keep the nominations coming! Nominations as of April 9th:
|
I since added Eternal Struggle (in-game version) to my list, but for that one I don't care so much whether it's the OST or in-game version. [Hubris's OST version lacks the Asian-sounding instrument found in-game.. but I still believe Eternal Struggle sounds better in-game than on the OST as well, due to the extra bass in-game]. I really think you should let Machinae Supremacy's Great Gianna Sisters slide.. because it really doesn't fit anywhere else (at least not in this index thread) and it's a nice arrangement ;)
As for Soul Calibur II, it simply stores its audio in the ADX format. Thanks to hcs, Winamp now has a plugin which can loop ADX files, so no one has to deal with my not-so-l337 cut-and-paste skills to get a full 2-loop song with fadeout ;) I'll do a -V 0 --vbr-new diskwrite from Winamp once I get time, and then tag the files I know. Also, I'll upload the 3 ITG edits to YSI soon, and post a link. |
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - El Cargo

I'll correct your nomination list in a minute, thanks for catching that typo. Double Post: Here's the nomination pool so far, I see alot of great choices. Thanks everyone! Got to start selection kinda sorta soon. I don't want to leave the nominations sitting around for too long so.. I think I will be cutting off any new nominations somewhere near the last week of this month! The 24th sounds like a good day =o. I will then PM all nominators with further instructions about the tracklist selection. Anyway there's still plenty of time, so we'll see. Nominations as of April 15th:
|
Thought I give this thread one last bump before I close it off on the 24th. Again, thanks everyone for participating! I'll PM the nominators on the 23rd or 24th with further instructions!
Nominations as of April 22nd:
|
Just wanted to point out that some of Skexis' noms are invalid, since they're console exclusives / PC titles:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Lost Painting (PS1 exclusive) Diablo - Dungeon (PC exclusive, PS1 version came much later) KOTOR - Bastila Shan (counted as Xbox exclusive according to the Xbox forum thread) KOTOR - Dantooine Outback (same) And I'm not sure about these: Oblivion - Dusk at the Market (I think it's already being used in either the Xbox or PC thread) Quake III - Noise Purge (would go in PC thread? other modified versions came out later) Silent Hill 3 - Dance With Night Wind (PS2 exclusive, PC version came out later) |

Thanks Kairyu. |

Spoiler:
|
Is it not too late to change one of my nominations? If it isn't, I'd like to change this:
Prince of Persia Sands of Time OST - The Tower of Dawn (track 28, 1:34) Into this: Prince of Persia Sands of Time (cubed's Rip) - Tower of Dawn (track 31, 5:02) The gamerip version was nominated by Timberwolf, and seeing as I forgot how great the gamerip version was, I'd like to change it. Thanks - this will be my only edit. |

edit: Ok here's the lastest list of nominations. Nominations as of April 26th (fixed typo in Darkcomet72's noms):

Just a heads up for all members who made nominations to this album. Check your PM box!
I am no longer taking additional nominations. Sorry! |
Hey my last two nominations are missing from the list (although they still show up when you click on them). Just wanted to point it out :)

Haha, oops. Again ._.
I'll update that list later today. Thanks :). Nominations as of April 26th (fixed typo in Darkcomet72's noms):

I don't want to name names-- but just a few more nominators need to send their votes to me. Then I'm ready to make my final selection! |

So this part of the GFF soundtrack is complete then?
Nice job on ordering all the tracks though. :) |
Good job Kairyu. Thanks.
|
Excellent job. Before I make any comments, was the order of the tracks determined by the point spread?
|
Quote:
Quote:
I added your points (the nominators) with mine (I rated each track on a 12 point scale) and another friend I know (18 point scale per nomination-- he's even pickier than I am when it comes to listening to vgm. So I gave him more voting power.) The tracks that didn't get points from nominators were reviewed by me and I hand picked each one (nothing else I could do without taking more time.) After all that, I basically picked the top rated songs and added them to the tracklist. A few exceptions had to be made to make everything fit and then I even added my own nominations (they're the two tetris songs.) If everyone is ok with it, I can post the point results for most of the nominations later today. Anyway, it made for some interesting results and for the most part it worked. I thought it turned out fairly well too :). |
Quote:
|
Yeah yeah, I'll at least PM the results to you ;).
|
Great job, Kairyu. Go ahead and upload the album to Tappy's FTP in his GFF Soundtrack folder, and you'll be done with your coordination! Thanks a lot for all the help.
|
Well, the five tracks I gave the most points to made it in, as well as nine out of eleven total, so I'm satisfied.
Quote:
|
Bah, here's the point totals. You can yell at me for posting it here now :tpg:.
Again, keep in mind some exceptions had to made to keep the soundtrack even! Plus the soundtrack has already been uploaded so I won't make any changes! Quote:
|
Thanks for the breakdown. Great job, Kairyu :)
Was the "unknown judge" a GFF member, by the way? |
Quote:
|
Great work, Kairyu! Looks like a well varied compilation. I've only heard about 5 of the tracks so this should be an interesting listen. Provided I can tear myself from other distractions like intensive gaming.
|
Thanks! One of my main concerns was to pick a even variety of nominations and most importantly keep the album interesting. In my opinion that was accomplished. Though I believe its you that will be the judge of that ;).
Anyway, at the rate the coordinators are submitting their albums you should be able to download the entire soundtrack by mid or late next month! |
