Hey bobo! Request here~

I think you coded the original rating system here, didn't you? I found one on vb.org but yours was way better than that. Could you make it again please? I miss it a lot. ;____;

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Apr 1, 2006 01:24 AM

Seconded. I thought it was interesting to see the board's general perception of people I don't know before I read their post, rather than having to go by postcount right now. Which sucks. And is completely inaccurate.

Yeah, except those who offer FTPs tended to get much higher votes than those who actually did something else for the community. Even most FTPs that were run by an ass were given 4 stars on a near consistent basis.
Plus there are those who rate lowly on everyone just to mess with the system...

IdleChill Apr 1, 2006 01:56 AM

Well, nothing is perfect.

But I'd like to have the rating system back as well. I'm "smug" like that.

Was this your experience...?

I poked it and it made a sad sound Apr 1, 2006 12:34 PM

While I am sure I will score low this time around (since I am SO MEAN), I'd like to see the rating system come back too.

I wonder if its something Blah could do?

No actually I got reasonably high ratings. I just think some people got a lower rating than they deserved (evilboris *ahem*).

One could say he actually did deserve that rating.

Miles Apr 4, 2006 07:02 AM

Mega bump!

bobo, we miss you. =(

Minion Apr 4, 2006 10:36 AM

I don't get why anyone wants this. Does anyone really need ratings to tell them whether a member is good or not? Try going to the journals page and you'll find out pretty well who is liked and who isn't by whom. That's pretty much all it's used for, anyway. In that respect, I find the rating system to be redundant.

Lord Styphon Apr 4, 2006 10:41 AM

Yeah, bobo (or Miles, for that matter) could be spending time devoted to the rating system and use it for putting the member gallery back in.

Aardark Apr 4, 2006 10:58 AM

I agree with Styphon and Minion. I mean, the rating system was interesting at first, but why do you people who have been here for like four years need it anymore? You already know who likes you, who doesn't, hell, you probably know exactly what rating you would have.

Minion Apr 4, 2006 12:12 PM

I would have a 4.385960483745834, most likely. Which is, of course, significantly better than a mere 4.38. Clearly marking me as superior to any such user.

Miles Apr 4, 2006 04:02 PM

Yeah, lets get rid of a neat system we've had on these forums since the beginning of time just because there's a small group of people that don't want it.

Seriously though. If I installed the rating hack on the VB website I bet you'll be missing bobo's version of the rating system right away. The poor postbit feels so incomplete without it. ;_;

Eleo Apr 4, 2006 04:06 PM

Sage this.

"He argued against me and was right, 1."

"He's a dick but he runs an FTP, 5."

Minion Apr 4, 2006 04:10 PM

If we bring it back, can we change it so it's more meaningful and less ridiculous? We don't need ratings of 1-5. Anything besides 1, 3 and 5 is meaningless. We should just have "Good, Average and Sucks" or something. And nothing with 15 decimal places after it. Just base what they get on a histogram of votes, kinda like the way professors decide what grade you get in a class.

I tried installing it but decided it's a piece of crap compared to the version we had before. The one used on our older version of VB allowed us to check images all on one page to see if they were real images or images of sephiroth/cloud/mario/starfox/whatever. The newest update for VB3.5.0+ takes that area away for some odd reason. I guess it's because someone else ported it over and forgot the best part. So the member gallery is there now, it's just full of fake pictures. The only way to remove them is to do it all manually each time they pop up in there which might take a bit of time.

I prefer to wait for the better version, if it ever comes.

Eleo Apr 5, 2006 01:54 PM

How can you be sure that Sephiroth, Cloud, Mario, or Starfox aren't regulars here at GFF? I don't feel it's fair that you discriminate against video game characters. They have every right to have their photos up as well as anyone else.

Lord Styphon Apr 5, 2006 02:00 PM

No they don't.

Drex Apr 5, 2006 02:05 PM

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we have rules against video game characters posting their own pictures in the FAQ. If you can't find it in there, they must have been lost with the crash.

Eleo Apr 5, 2006 02:21 PM

I never read the FAQ. What kind of loser reads that shit, lol. I bet the staff members haven't really read it either.

FatsDomino Apr 6, 2006 08:13 AM

I generally rate everyone a five anyway but sure I'd like to see this feature again. It would certainly make my sig more useful.

Miles Apr 7, 2006 01:32 PM

Acer, there are some people that rate people 1s just for putting a rate me in their signature. Rating whore! =O

Also, bump since bobo is online.

bobo Apr 7, 2006 01:33 PM

This is something I will be working on this weekend. :)

Freelance Apr 7, 2006 01:45 PM

Awesome! I'd love to have the rating system back. It is interesting to know whether people like you or not, from the regulars to the new guys. However, I'd like to know what each person gave me. Tthere was no such option before the board crashed. Is it possible to implement something like that?

Miles Apr 7, 2006 01:47 PM

I dunno. I think its better kept secret. I always enjoyed looking at the list of who rated me and guessing who hated and who didn't. Of course admins have a way to cheat and check who rated them anyways. =D

I think it's nothing you can base on when you want to know something about someone. It's not overall rating but something that you give when you like someone or not. If you say something stupid you get 1 if you do something good you get 5. So I think that we should just leave it as it is.

If you take a look at his sig in detail, you'll note that all the rate-me links do rate him with a 1. Kinda defeats the purpose, methinks.

Aardark Apr 8, 2006 04:46 PM

If you take a look in even more detail, you'll notice that he's not user 1732 anymore, and technically the links don't do shit anyway.

Well it's not like anyone would randomly browse the membership database for zero-posters and rate them 1s, you know.

It's weird for bobo to use a demonstrative adjective. Usually it's like It'll be done by spring break! *

* ...of 2009.

Miles May 29, 2006 11:00 PM

I'll bump this request up once again, though I'm sure he's probably working on something else right now.

That's fair enough really...

I'd like to see the ratings come back. Spiteful acts of petty vengance are an important part of message board posting.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Jun 4, 2006 12:20 AM

I see it's almost up. Thanks bobo!
