xxxHOLiC

xxxHOLiC, based on the CLAMP manga series of the same name, begins airing on April 6. The animation production's going to be by Production I.G, the same studio that worked on the xxxHOLiC movie that was released back in the summer.

Quote:

Watanuki Kimihiro, a high school student who can see ghosts and other supernatural beings, finds himself inexplicably drawn into a curious-looking shop. The owner of the shop, Ichihara Yuuko, is a witch who grants people's wishes, but in return the person has to pay for their wish to be granted. She promises to get rid of Watanuki's ability to see spirits, but he must work in her shop to pay off the price for ridding him of the ability.
The series will be worked on by Ageha Ohkawa, the member of CLAMP who plots out all of CLAMP's series, so the adaptation will probably be quite faithful to the manga.

It doesn't seem like xxxHOLiC will contain any of the famed crossovers with Tsubasa, though, so it remains to be seen how the series will deal with some of the events in Tsubasa that directly impact xxxHOLiC (e.g. the introduction of Mokona).

Black Ninja Mar 3, 2006 08:25 AM

My question is HOW are they going to do it without the crossovers from Tsubasa, considering that she's always talking about, sending things to, and recieving things and messages from them?

I mean, at least they're not giving it all to an outsider, but still.

chato Mar 4, 2006 06:15 PM

in case some of you haven't watched the movie yet. it came out this morning by shinsen fansubs. i just saw it and i love it to death. its not bad and now i can't wait for the series.

I just finished watching the xxxHOLiC movie. THREE times. The soundtrack, the art, the direction and pacing... everything was so beautifully done, I just wish it was longer :(

I'm totally hyped up for the TV series now.

I just finished watching the movie myself. It was exactly as I expected it to be and so much more. I loved the soundtrack by itself, but after hearing it in the movie it's even better.

I guess now I'll have to watch the Tsubasa movie. It's going to be quite bittersweet, as I have a feeling it will turn out to be much better than Bee Train's adaptation of the source material.

No, no. The movie's soundtrack is by Saitou Tsuneyoshi and the series' soundtrack is by S.E.N.S. The Tsubasa Chronicle movie's soundtrack is, however, by Yuki Kajiura. (From skimming the movie, it looks like it's just a bunch of tracks from the series' soundtrack.)

I can understand how they can skip a few of them, but three come to mind that I think that HAS to be here:

1) The initial crossover
2) Valentine's Day
3) Yuuko's White Day note.

A few are indeed minor, like in the anime Mokona sending an apple over to Yuuko, but if these three aren't in here, it's gonna mess things up.

P.S. Here seems to be a link for the Tsubasa movie: http://www.mininova.org/tor/238347

lemonmanko Mar 5, 2006 11:29 PM

i actually thought about buying a volume of the manga then i bought real bout highschool instead...

Is this a RAW or a subbed version of this movie?

And is the xxxHOLiC movie really that good? I asked some people back in IRC and they all replied that it is not even mediocre. Well, seems like I have to find it out by myself.

Bigblah Mar 6, 2006 07:13 AM

"some people back in IRC" is awfully vague. Maybe you were in the AJ channel, that would explain their horrible taste. I bet they don't even watch ARIA.

Watched the movie again.

David Deluxe Mar 6, 2006 07:42 AM

Well, I'll simply watch it, since I can't loose anything. I got those responses in the IRC room of a subbing group called "Eclipse" and I don't know anything about their preferences. Their reactions just were a little bit confusing after reading only good stuff about the movie. As I said before, taste differs, so I'll trust Gamingforce more than those people.

Black Ninja Mar 6, 2006 08:43 AM

Not to change the subject, but how many volumes are there to the manga? I have 5 I believe.

It says dual-audio. This ought to be interesting. Will find out in a few days and let you know. ^^;;

There are 6 out at this point, and vol 7 was scheduled to come out on Jan 31, but got pushed waaaaaaaaaaay back to like, May.

eriol33 Mar 6, 2006 01:05 PM

Hey, is the movie spoiling the manga?? Could u give some teaser?

It's the beautiful MKV raw. You have to love multiple audio tracks.

And yes, you MUST believe us. xxxHOLiC + Production I.G = greatness

Ah, the trials and tribulations associated with translating and publishing a currently running manga series in Japan. Once you catch up, well, it's nothing more than a waiting game. The xxxHOLiC volumes are released once every five months in Japan.

Erm, dunno about that last part, but the movie stands alone quite nicely from the manga. There's no spoilers at all for the manga... Not that there's anything to spoil, really, other than recent events in the manga.

Craze Mar 7, 2006 10:16 AM

I haven't had the chance to have a peek at the movie yet, but seeing how good you guys mentioned, I'm so tempted now :D

Can't wait for the series this April, I bet it's going to be great!

Going a little side-tracked..the manga's being released painfully slow compared to Tsubasa, and I feel both mangas actually have the same potential (although Tsubasa can be awfully draggy at times).

xxxHOLiC's "chapters" are smaller than Tsubasa's, hence the length of time between volume releases. xxxHOLiC averages about 14~16 pages per chapter, whereas Tsubasa averages 18~20 pages per chapter. Also, xxxHOLiC seems to like to take more breaks than Tsubasa. It's just the way it is, I guess.

Sir VG Mar 7, 2006 10:02 PM

I watched the movie last night and loved it. If the anime is at this level, it will surely be a hit.

JazzFlight Mar 8, 2006 01:16 AM

It's a moderately interesting premise.

I'm watching the movie now, and it takes a looooong time to get used to the proportions on these characters. I mean, I read one volume of the manga, but seeing it in animated form makes all the elongations stand out as freakish. These guys have arms like spiders and their fingers are larger than their head. Their necks would make those African women with the big gold neck-rings jealous. Creepy.

Bigblah Mar 8, 2006 02:23 AM

For someone who's pretty used to typical anime drawings, the matchstick proportions surprisingly didn't bother me much -- and I'm not even remotely familiar with CLAMP's works.

Aoie_Emesai Mar 8, 2006 01:29 PM

It's a very good manga overall. This is one of the few manga i'm "even" collecting, besides MAR and Negima. I love the humor in this manga, plus the sophiciated way the story is presented is always intresting.

"Typical anime drawings"... what? No.

THIS IS NOT NORMAL:

I think you missed my point.

And yes, Yuuko looks fabulous.

Did you mean that these are "refreshing" compared to typical anime drawings? In manga, I found them refreshing and artistic. In anime, it doesn't look right at all. It's all about seeing it in motion.

When the characters are walking and you see them from the side, their arms are extending reallllly far down. Their elbows begin where normal arms would end.

Her body is the same as "alien greys" from X-Files and such. Those fingers are not anywhere near believable.

Bigblah Mar 9, 2006 05:57 AM

So you're saying it ruined or diminished the viewing experience for you?

It's the opposite for me; the absurd proportions (there were a few scenes where they outright deformed the characters beyond recognition) greatly enhanced the feel of the movie. I didn't miss the fact that they looked like spidery apes sometimes, and I liked it.

After all, everyone's pretty damn weird.

Yuna Mar 10, 2006 10:26 PM

With those fingers I just hope Yuuko doesn't became a proctologist ...

nabhan Mar 12, 2006 06:43 PM

The movie was. amazing.

I haven't watched anime in ages, but the art was simply gorgeous. Usually I find myself checking the time with an episode or OVA or whatever, but I'm actually sad that the movie finished. If only it had been a bit longer.

Now I'm interested in both this and Tsubasa Chronicle ;_;

eriol33 Mar 25, 2006 09:04 AM

The movie is very good, too bad my enjoyment is decreased because the file from place where I rent the anime from somewhat corrupted and there are lot of skippings (damn!!)

anyway, the soundtracks are good, so is the surrealism in the movie. This movie is far better than Tsubasa the Movie. Anyone knows the direct dl for the movie?

Bigblah Apr 8, 2006 03:25 AM

The raw of the first TV episode is out.

The art looks almost exactly like the movie's, and the lower budget isn't immediately noticeable. The story starts from the very beginning this time, describing how Yuuko and Watanuki meet. There's a few brilliantly scripted scenes (such as Yuuko haughtily slapping Watanuki's hand when he asks for his pocketwatch). Also, the opening sequence (with a Suga Shikao rock song) just exudes coolness. I like how this is turning out.

Sir VG Apr 8, 2006 03:32 AM

I was starting to wonder if anybody was ever gonna put up a torrent, RAW or subbed.

Bigblah Apr 8, 2006 03:50 AM

Haha, is this fanservice

eriol33 Apr 8, 2006 04:13 AM

fanservice for yuri-lolicon lover. btw

Spoiler:
Some people predict that these two actually are same being as clowcards

soulsteelgray Apr 8, 2006 01:16 PM

I've skimmed some of the raw, but I haven't sat down and watched it all the way through. I think I'm gonna wait for the HDTV version of the episode to air before watching; the obviousness of the original 16:9 aspect ratio in the 4:3 airing is too annoying.

Craze Sep 28, 2006 09:01 AM

Anyone here keeping up with the manga scans? The latest chapters (118, 119) tells us a lot about Himawari. Now I don't hate her that much already..

lemonmanko Sep 29, 2006 01:22 PM

i've been keeping up with the anime and the manga releases in the states and right now they are about the same prolly like episode 27 they will show something i've never seen before

in the mean time i'm watching tsubasa chronicles 2nd season which is equally good

Actually, the anime series is on somewhat of a hiatus at the moment. There's no definitive conclusion to the story, but the current episode run is over.

I'm glad I'm not watching Tsubasa Chronicle season 2. All the stuff I've heard about the fillers plus the continued censoring of the source material is making me stay far, far away from the sries.

Erisu Kimu Oct 1, 2006 12:40 AM

I loved the latest episode of xxxHOLiC.

Spoiler:
The story was sad and very serious. It was really good. Doumeki had two facial expressions!!

eriol33 Oct 5, 2006 10:10 AM

I just have watched the tv series up to the 16th episode, and so far I love it, much better than tsubasa. Has anyone read the latest chapter (120)? the storty getting interesting for sure, lately I've been thinking if Watanuki really:

Spoiler:
a counterpart of Clow reincarnation, his appearance is truly similar with Eriol, except he sometimes being immature, selfess and emotional.

I hate to admit it, but boy pairing in clamp is totally matched the atmosphere instead of normal ones. :(

SenorKaffee Oct 8, 2006 03:30 AM

I´ve seen both the Tsubasa Chronicle movie and the xxxHOLiC at the Connichi.
I didn´t like the Tsubasa Chronicle movie at all - it looked like a pretty generic extra-episode, but maybe I only had that feeling because it was the first contact I had with that series. xxxHOLiC was really fun to watch- and the connection to the Tsubasa Chronicle movie was just the perfect ending.

I agree with you, this movie is bit pointless and doesnt have anything do with the main plot. but I must admit the graphic is much better than the one in tv series.

Erisu Kimu Oct 8, 2006 01:13 PM

Just watched the last episode of xxxHOLiC, or season one at least? It was alright.
Spoiler:
Those arms were creepy though. We never even got to know the boy's name. I knew he was dead. There was just something peculiar about him.

Summonmaster Oct 8, 2006 01:41 PM

Last episode? I thought 24 wasn't even out yet? I'm still looking forward to xxxHolic and have to watch the movie still. Hopefully the TV gets another season, since I need my fix of mystical goodness.

Erisu Kimu Oct 8, 2006 01:49 PM

^^^ It's out now. I just downloaded it yesterday night and then watched it today. The TV SHOULD have another season, because this one concluded with a "side story" and that's not really a good way to end it. Besides, people who are reading the Manga will tell you that there's a lot more. The movie is pretty good. Actually, I started with the movie first, before getting into the series. I thought the series was already made a long time ago when the first Tsubasa Chronicle series was out. I guess not.

Summonmaster Oct 8, 2006 02:46 PM

Could you upload xxxHolic - 24 to sendspace by any chance, pretty please :)? My Cds will be incomplete if Ep. 24 is not Mishicorp, and the torrent is now gone, because it was JUST licensed immediately after the last episode. Thus, there was only like a one or two day window to download it. I thought it was going for 26 episodes, but that's somewhat strange to end now.

Sir VG Oct 9, 2006 06:22 AM

xxxHOLiC Episode 24

Merry Christmas.
