Popular Series gets a Sequel for Revolution. Guess what it is...

....because I don't know myself.

Quote:

The issue also features some other tasty rumor nuggets worth checking out: Mario Paint for DS, a new PSP design (and new functions), and a sequel to a popular SNES/N64 franchise for the Revolution (read the mag to find out which it is).
-1up.com

I'd like to read any guesses you've got though. I'd say Starfox, but then that would make it a popular SNES/N64/GC franchise.

Wall Feces Mar 31, 2006 01:56 AM

That would be my guess... Star Fox wasn't as huge on GC as it was on SNES and N64. I can see the Rev controller being dreamlike for Star Fox. It would be sweet if it had 2 modes of use... Hold it vertically for a flight-stick, and then go into first person view and switch it up to aim with the stick and shoot.

Badass.

RABicle Mar 31, 2006 02:19 AM

It'll be Donkey Kong because as far as faggots like EGM are concerned Jungle Beat doesn't exist.

Lukage Mar 31, 2006 02:28 AM

So basically its just a ploy to get people to buy the magazine to say "Hey guess what, you knew it already, but we've got DK!"

NovaX Mar 31, 2006 02:31 AM

Donkey Konga is the true sequel to the DKC series.

I am hoping for a new Pilotwings, that would be pretty sweet..

Pretty much.

it could be a third party game but buggered if I can think of a popular one.

Hey wait a Yoshi Platformer! Chucking eggs with revmote!

Soldier Mar 31, 2006 02:58 AM

Heck, I'd love a new Yoshi's Island.

The thing about DK is that Donkey Konga would techincally be a new series, and not a sequel to Donkey Kong Country. With that in mind, I would also love a true sequel to DKC, and none of that bongo shit.

Solis Mar 31, 2006 03:11 AM

(wonders when this Revolution-oriented thread will get closed)

Well, while I'd love a new Star Fox, I have to agree that it seems unlikely since it's not JUST an SNES/N64 series. So all we have to do is think of games that were on those systems but not on NES or Gamecube.

So instead, I'm going to suggest a slightly lesser known series: Pilot Wings. I mean really, can you think of any game that would showcase the controller better than a game like that? The "pointing" capability of the controller would work out pretty well in a game like that, not to mention I'm sure there's some way they could work the positional detection into it as well.

Soldier Mar 31, 2006 03:15 AM

Funny enough, I never actually tried either of the two PilotWings. And I've always wanted to try them, but kept putting them off for something like...well...Zelda. Perhaps third time's the charm, and I'll finally give it a shot with Revolution.

NovaX Mar 31, 2006 03:20 AM

Of course Donkey Konga is a new series. How can it be a sequel to DKC? It's a music game. Also Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat is probably the best Donkey Kong game out there, it's too good to be a sequel to DKC.

Magic Mar 31, 2006 03:34 AM

Totally off topic

I just have to mention that when I read this thread title, at first I thought it said "Popular Series gets punched in the face." It's really late.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 31, 2006 06:15 AM

Pilotwings immediately comes to mind. That, along with Blast Corps were in serious need of a GC remake or sequal. Alas.. ;_;

Elixir Mar 31, 2006 06:43 AM

Please let it be a Killer Instinct sequel. Oh wait, controller, yeah.

A sequel to Uniracers would be nice. Of course that's probably the ONE SNES game which I truly still enjoy yet it'll never get the credit it deserves. Hmm, Yoshi's Island should get a sequel as well, since the art and style in the first was so original.

I wouldn't exactly call Pilotwings a popular series, but it does seem to be a bit of a Nintendo tradition to launch their consoles with a Pilotwings game. And as always, it'll likely be a big tech demo so you can play with the wand. I'd expect to see an obnoxious amount of footage showcasing how you move the plane around with the Rev controller in the months leading up to the release.

FatsDomino Mar 31, 2006 12:23 PM

Elixir, I'm pretty sure Killer Instinct was a Rare franchise anyway.

But yeah I'd be happy with a new Pilotwings or a new Yoshi platformer.

Eh, I'll let you guys play in this thread as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

SouthJag Mar 31, 2006 12:38 PM

I'll go in with Qwarky and pray it be Blast Corps. Blast Corps is in dire need of a sequel.

FatsDomino Mar 31, 2006 12:42 PM

Another Rare franchise. I can't remember if Nintendo let Rare have Killer Instinct and Blast Corps when they sold them to Microsoft but my thoughts are they did and in that case we probably won't be seeing a sequel to either of them in a looooong time.

Mucknuggle Mar 31, 2006 12:59 PM

It's probably going to be a DK game. It hasn't had any true sequels on the GC - just music games.

Just because it uses drums doesn't mean that Jungle Beat was a music game. It was a straight up platformer, and a damn awesome one at that.

My bets on Pilotwings or maybe Yoshi's Story.

Winter Storm Mar 31, 2006 01:26 PM

With rare out of the picture, I don't know who they could be talking about other than yet another Mario/Yoshi game. I think we've had enough Megamans.

Helloween Mar 31, 2006 02:19 PM

My vote, and hope, goes towards a new Yoshi platformer. I loved Yoshi's Island, and really regret not buying it that day when i saw it in the store for $30. Yoshi's Story was ok, nothing special, but enjoyable none the less. I've always sort of been hoping that GC would bring that franchise back to the glory days of Island, and perhaps Revolution will take up that torch.

Matt Mar 31, 2006 03:26 PM

Kirby wasn't (really) on the GC; so that's, like, possible too.

guyinrubbersuit Mar 31, 2006 04:01 PM

I say Pilotwings since that game came out for the N64 and SNES and was marginally popular (at least in Japan) and didn't have a GCN incarnation.

Kimchi Mar 31, 2006 04:58 PM

I can't think of any game other then LoZ but LoZ is going to be released... so I don't know.

How dare you!!! You need to go try out Megaman Battle Network X GK 7: Mustard and Ketchup Versions.

Kirby's Air Ride wasn't a Kirby platformer, true but he also saw the cube in Super Smash Bros. Melee and there's still that planned platform game we haven't seen or heard about since last year. Not to mention there was that original demo of Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble 2 using GCN-GBA connectivity that probably would have been a really cool game. Kirby's seen the cube a fair amount but should have seen more. HAL better not have cancelled the new Kirby platformer.

Windwaker, Four Swords, SSBM, Soul Calibur II cameo, the upcoming Twilight Princess, plus two special Zelda compilation discs. Yeah cube got a lot of Zelda lovin'.

We seriously had too much megaman even for GBA. Now all/most of the new ones sucks. (Mostly MMBA)

And that's why they're bringing a new trash series to the DS. Pretty Soon, every console will suffer the wrath of Megaman!

The Perfect Crime.

scotty Mar 31, 2006 08:27 PM

do nintendo have the rights to make make good donkey kong games? I always just assumed they made the stupid drum games because they weren't alowed to make a platformer donkey kong after Rare left.

Adamgian Mar 31, 2006 08:29 PM

I'm really hoping for a new PilotWings. I loved the N64 version to death, and I'd be great if they redid that franchise. Just aimlessly flying around and landing in random places was a blast. Aaaahhh, the good ole days.

Nintendo only got rights to make horrible donkey kong games. It was something they missed in the sneaky fine print.

Seriously, are you guys trying to make me close another thread due to retardedness again?

2 was gold. Literally. I haven't spent more time on any other fighting game. Of course there was an endless supply of combos to learn, but I think I basically mastered Sabrewulf's moves. I bet I could still pull off that 25 hit manual combo I found myself after a few plays.

Still, it would never have a proper sequel.

?

FatsDomino Mar 31, 2006 09:36 PM

Sigh...

Guys, just ignore the urge to respond to Elixir about the revmote and fighting games. Please.

NovaX Mar 31, 2006 11:29 PM

:)

I can't really tell what this game will be. I am hoping for Pilotwings, but it you never know they could push the GC Kirby to the Rev. We haven't seen anything from it since last e3. One thing I do know, it won't be Donkey Kong.

Darkcomet72 Mar 31, 2006 11:37 PM

I think you guys are thinking too hard about the SNES/N64 thing. For all we know, it was probably mishandled info. This kind of stuff happens all the time. If it wasn't mishandled, then that doesn't mean it was a series that was most popular during the Snes/N64 era.

And unless I'm blind, the first post never mentioned a Nintendo series specifically. That said, I still have no idea what game it would be.

This magazine wouldn't happen to be an APRIL issue would it?..

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is a good Donkey Kong game (the best one), and also a platformer. It was also made after Rare left. Whoops!

I think it's quite obvious the game they're referring to is Pilotwings, even though I wouldn't consider it all that popular at the moment, it used to be, the N64 version sold a decent amount if I remember correctly.

Pez Apr 1, 2006 03:55 AM

Pilotwings would be sweet, although I wouldn't have picked it for a popular series, though. Should do a good show of demoing the new controller.

Never trust anything in magazines this time of year. Then again, most of them are so obvious that you'd spot them a mile away.

Zephos Apr 1, 2006 06:56 AM

I'm hoping for a Yoshi platformer, but more meaty and challenging like Yoshi's Island as opposed to the finished-in-two-hours Yoshi's Story. And go back to Yoshi's good voice, before he turned into a baby. None of this "hyeh! dad-dum!" crap. And no fruit.

It's the May issue. The April issue already happened.

Tellurian Apr 1, 2006 05:54 PM

Hum. Missing Big N franchise?
How about....
KID ICARUS?
If the 2d->3d transition is done in a similarly awesome way it was done with Metroid Prime...

Leomane Apr 3, 2006 01:12 AM

I can not believe no one has mentioned this game, it was one of the best on N64 and a great sleeper on SNES

PilotWings!

Afterall ot was really popular and the GCN version was scrapped, therfore making it SNES / N64 only which fits the critera. I really hope they do make a sequal I loved it to death.

[edit] My bad, its been mentioned before.

Elixir Apr 3, 2006 01:22 AM

Let me say this before I forget.

It could be F-Zero.

RABicle Apr 3, 2006 01:37 AM

Even though F Zero has come out in the Arcades and Gamecube plus had two GBA titles.

And it's never been popular.

Smoodle Apr 3, 2006 04:00 AM

F-Zero's never been popular? Hah! Yeah right. Either that, or it's just very popular with me. I love the series.

vuigun Apr 3, 2006 07:12 AM

I guess it can't be Castlevania, eh?

It was never popular on the N64.

Helloween Apr 3, 2006 09:36 AM

I'd be hoping for that, but i'm pretty sure i'm just wasting my time. I loved the Castlevania games.

Even so, i hope Revolution gets a Castlevania game anyways.

Elixir Apr 3, 2006 08:59 PM

Not to mention that Castlevania was far more popular after Symphony of the Night was released. It isn't a Nintendo exclusive anymore. And Dawn of Sorrow and Aria of Sorrow are also good games*

*Aria of Sorrow is good up until you die 200 times on the flying dude with the scythe, god that was difficult.

Soldier Apr 12, 2006 01:38 PM

In case it wasn't already mentioned, the mystery game has been revealed as....

Spoiler:
Pilotwings

as I now have the issue in question.

So....that's that.

Wall Feces Apr 12, 2006 01:40 PM

Thought so, that kicks ass. Where did you see/read this though?

HostileCreation Apr 12, 2006 02:41 PM

Yeah, I'm going to need some very solid evidence here, because I'm certain I would have heard it somewhere other than GFF first.

Soldier Apr 12, 2006 03:49 PM

It was on the May issue of EGM, like 1up said (look at the first page). I just got the issue today and checked. Keep in mind, though, this news is part of the rumor bin, so it isn't 100% confirmed. Still, I'd say it's feasible enough.
