$600 Tax Rebate: What will you do?

For those Americans out there who have the $600 tax rebate coming to you soon, what do you plan to do with it?

They started printing and mailing checks today, which means you could see a check (or direct deposit, depending on how you got your federal tax refund) shortly. EDIT: Looks like it's only direct deposit for right now.

The news keeps saying that most Americans will NOT spend their $600 frivolously, but instead pay off bills or save it.

So - what do you intend to do with your $600 tax rebate?

K_ Takahashi Apr 28, 2008 10:25 AM

Originally I was going to pay the IRS off because I owe them some $450 this year (long story from some fuck in payroll changing my holding claim from 1 to 3).

I am going to buy a more modern ride (2000 Dodge Neon) that someone is selling for $600, though a tripple would have been nice :tpg:

nuttyturnip Apr 28, 2008 10:26 AM

I intend to use it to pay off the trip to Virginia Beach I just returned from. Sure, it's paying off bills, but I spent frivolously on the trip in anticipation of the refund, so it counts.

Yes, yes it does. =D (Did you charge the whole trip??)

At least you're not running out and going on another vacation with it. Not that $600 is a whole hell of a lot of money.

Radez Apr 28, 2008 10:32 AM

I spent 2 grand over the last few weeks, what with travel, and the car and so forth. This'll go straight to that.

Misogynyst Gynecologist Apr 28, 2008 10:34 AM

When is that $600 due anyway?

Radez Apr 28, 2008 10:36 AM

Depends on the last two of your social. 00-20 are supposed to get it May 2. 21-75 at some point, and 76-99 on May 12.

russ Apr 28, 2008 10:37 AM

Well, I guess you could say that I already spent most of the $600 that I will be getting shortly. I bought a pair of nice sunglasses and a PSP with a couple games. That doesn't add up to $600, but those are expenditures that I would not have normally made had I not been getting the stipend. I figured that because the government's intention was for me to spend the money frivolously to help stimulate the economy, I should probably do so. It's a win-win situation, I get stuff and I help others in the process. Mostly I just wanted stuff though. Sup materialism.

Between today and the end of July, I believe. The schedule is based on the first last 2 digits of your social security number. Here's the time table:

Direct deposit:
00-20: May 2
21-75: May 9
76-99: May 16

Checks:
00-09: May 16
10-18: May 23
19-25: May 30
26-38: June 6
39-51: June 13
52-63: June 20
64-75: June 27
76-87: July 4
88-99: July 11

Radez Apr 28, 2008 10:42 AM

Sass, what's your source? I browsed through a few links and found two charts both of which had different numbers. The last was usgov.about.gibberish, so I figured it was decently accurate maybe-ish?

But that chart had the first checks going out May 9, and the last deposits being received May 12, with July 4 being the final check.

Meth Apr 28, 2008 10:43 AM

I'm gonna get my passenger side car door repainted. It got keyed. :(

My rebate ($300) is going to fund illegal activities and purchase illegal and controlled substances. That is to say, I won't be handing that cash back to the gov't, hell naw.

It'll be nice to have some scratch out there on the pavement this time around, maybe the Beaner won't have to buy all the beer. And maybe Canada will give me more than a ten day Visa if I have some change in my pocket.

Or maybe it'll be long gone by the time I get into the Great White North. Who knows? Regardless, it's money that I didn't count on having, so I'm pretty freaking excited.

Stop Sign Apr 28, 2008 10:53 AM

Food and bills. As much as I'd like to spend the money on, say, a nice HDTV, I think I'd better save the money for the necessities.

Dark Nation Apr 28, 2008 10:59 AM

The article is pretty accurate. I'll be paying off bills and getting rid of my credit card (if at all possible). So, sorry economy: I've put off paying some stuff for too long now and this is just a perfect way to get caught up. I'd LIKE to say it would be spent on Hookers and Blow, but well, that's not something I can do at the moment.

PiccoloNamek Apr 28, 2008 10:59 AM

I only get $300. All of it will immediately be used to pay bills.

Wall Feces Apr 28, 2008 11:09 AM

In all likelyhood, I will just throw it in the bank and chalk it up as about one month's worth of rent, but were I to spend it, I would put it towards one of the following:

- Six Feet Under complete series DVD box set
- iPod Touch

Then again, I might not get one, since if your parents claimed you as a dependent, you're totally screwed out of one. My dad doesn't remember if he did, or if he even could, but I guess I'll find out. I would hate to lose that quick and easy $300 though, damn.

Shonos Apr 28, 2008 11:16 AM

It's going directly into savings toward a car. I have to get a car by august so I don't have to take a 2-3 hour bus ride to school every day.

I think this whole thing is a pointless waste of money though. It wont help the economy. The majority will pay off debt or put it in gas/food. So they're printing more money for nothing. It will make things worse..

But hey if they want to give me free money go ahead.

Yes, I put everything I spent on my Visa card. That's usually what I do when I go out of town, so I don't have to worry about balancing my checkbook. I usually go to the beach in the spring and fall anyway, but at least this time I didn't have to worry about how much I was spending.

Apparently you get more money for each person you claim as a dependent. I'm not sure how much it is though, since it depends on how much they made last year.

Misogynyst Gynecologist Apr 28, 2008 12:03 PM

Is it only me - or does the calculator on the IRS website not work?

Worked for me earlier. It's pretty straight forward, but you'll need your tax returns for 2007 on hand. (It asks your income listed, the form you used, so on)

Or, I think it's pretty safe to assume that provided you filed your taxes, owed nothing, and no one claimed you as a dependent, you'll be getting your check.

I'm not sure about this $300 business though. I should read more about that.

Radez Apr 28, 2008 12:32 PM

I think the $300 is for people under the reportable threshold or on benefits or something.

Shonos Apr 28, 2008 12:50 PM

Well according to the calculator I'm getting 300$. I only made ~9k in 2007 though. Minimum wage ftw.

Monkey King Apr 28, 2008 08:23 PM

For a brief span, I had to add on a private loan with an outrageous interest rate to my suite of student loans, so this check plus my income tax refund is going entirely into making that go away. Fortunately there's no early repayment fee, so if I can kill it entirely with one fell swoop, it will make life a LOT easier down the road.

Karasu Apr 28, 2008 08:37 PM

Honestly, I'm gonna put it towards that special edition 80 gig ps3 that comes with MGS4.

nazpyro Apr 29, 2008 11:12 AM

The plan is to withdraw it as 600 $1 bills, spread it out on my bed, and roll around in it. If that ain't ballin' enough, I guess it could be 120 $5 bills, but that may not be enough cash density for the effect.

Anyway...

I guess I could say the same thing. I'm getting this bundle regardless. The tax rebate is just going into my checking account which goes towards paying for whatever I buy anyway. I'm not really buying anything or paying off some bill I wouldn't otherwise without the $600.

Ditto. Actually one of us is. xD The other will probably be saved up for something non-gaming related.

Misogynyst Gynecologist Apr 29, 2008 11:33 AM

While I'm not a particular fan of the PS3, it is the cheapest Bluray player on the market (it just so happens to play games!) so thats actually a pretty damn good idea...

If any of you are house owners in America; surprised I've yet to hear the M word.

Spoiler:
Mortgage

Temari Apr 29, 2008 01:54 PM

Hey Sass, I never heard anything about this direct deposit thing... how do you know which one you're getting (or how do you sign up for the direct deposit)?

As for me, it'll be going towards my graduation present to myself, a pretty little thing called a Yamaha R6. -^.^-

nuttyturnip May 6, 2008 02:30 PM

Huzzah, I see my $600 has been direct deposited. My credit card bill is only $450, so it's very tempting to blow that extra $150, but I'm going to try very hard to resist the urge. VERY HARD.

Shively May 6, 2008 03:41 PM

I'm going to school so I will most likely use it for living expences however I plan to set aside 200 dollars to have my body hair waxed and my girlfriends pedicure.

The stimulus rebate program that the IRS is giving out to people is tiered based on filing status and tax liability.

For the most part, people who file Single or anything else but Married Joint will be receiving a base refund of $300.

The amount can go up though, depending on how much tax liability you had (taxable income after deductions multiplied by your tax rate). The maximum rebate being $600, the minimum being 0 (if you reported less than $3000 in income).
Then you receive an additional $300 per "qualifying child" (a child under the age of 17 at the end of 2007).

Of course, if you made too much money the rebate amount decreases and eventually disappears.

Radez May 6, 2008 05:30 PM

I had my tax refund direct deposited. The last two digits of my social are 02. I still haven't received my stimulus payment. I used their "Where's my economic stimulus payment?" tool and it tells me it's being issued on May 7th, and if I haven't received it by June 4, call and ask because they won't do anything before then.

Now I've got cocaine and a girl with nice tits and no bills to snort with.

Thanks U.S.

Gechmir May 6, 2008 06:08 PM

Just got mah $600 (04 SSN here). This, tacked on to a backlogged MONSTROUS expense sheet (per diem, owed cash, etc) that my company owed me, broke down to almost like an additional paycheck ='D Checking account is more bloated than when I got my bonus back in March.

Got all my debts stomped out, so this baby is going toward my Roth IRA along with the bulk of my checking account (gotta max 'dat IRA shit out). Sorry, Uncle Sam; I'm saving this! >=0

Arkhangelsk May 6, 2008 07:29 PM

I'm not getting any money :(.
However, my parents are, and one of the things they decided to spend it on is by buying me a pair of $300 cowboy mule-boot things. Because I need "something from Texas" by the time I graduate from UT... :annoyed:. If I were getting that rebate, I would be spending it on my trip overseas this summer -- which would defeat the purpose of keeping our money in our own economy, right?

mooglepimp May 8, 2008 11:57 AM

Buy a new entertainment center for my house.

The unmovable stubborn May 8, 2008 04:00 PM

As for me, I might just convert it to yen and take it to Japan with me and spend it there. XD

Seriously, Miles. Or at the very least a few good hookers because every male needs to get their dick wet (in female vagina) once in a while. EVEN FURRIES.

CelticWhisper May 9, 2008 10:34 AM

Ceph, they don't make furry RealDolls. At least not last I checked.

As for my check, it's going straight into the gaping maw of the beast, never to be seen again. *sigh*

AlphaDeus May 18, 2008 10:33 PM

Sup guys long time no see! :p

I didn't get my tax rebate yet even though I'm in the first bracket 00-09. It should arrive any day now. I already spent half of it on an Axiom 49 and I may spend the other half on "Miroslav Philharmonik".

Yeah I'm a composer! :P Alphadeus.com

Axiom 49

Miroslav Philharmonik (I can get for $270)

I might forget the orchestra, but I already bought the axiom. I make a pretty decent living as a dispatcher. :P
