i know the "gothic thing" is "IN"...(even in the cartoon about college always there are a gothic student, almost always a girl..why?...because the androgynous men? )

Aardark Mar 29, 2006 03:29 PM

Thread title of the century.

Does anyone know any 'goths' that are older than twenty? All I ever see is stupid little goth girls. I hope it's just a passing phase.

Lord Styphon Mar 29, 2006 03:30 PM

Perhaps this will fit better in General Discussion for now.

And without the crappy font tags in the title. Or not.

Indeed I do. I know a few older than 30 and 40. They are pretty crazy. They all worship some satanic guy who wears a pyramid on his head..

Pretty funny webpage btw.

You mean to say they play 'Silent Hill 2' a bunch?

There is a goth crowd in Chicago, and along with them, their is a goth night club: Neo. I have to admit, I don't care much for goth taste, but when they have their "depressing sway" in unison, it looks really damn cool. Also the older goth crowd dresses much better, and much more consistent with a goth feel than the younger crowd.

Seems like it's a fad in any case.

The goths I know that are over 20 are dimisnished by joining other things that suit thier tastes, like the KKK.

Do most of these people join the KKK? *_*

(I wonder how they make that jump logical...)

Being gothic (not structurally) seems to be a phase. I believe that people grow out of it. Honestly, can any of you picture an elderly goth person? I don't treat it like a fad because I'm not sure if it'll go out of style. However, I do compare it to stages of development where the child becomes rebellious and temporarily stops listening to their parents' or parent's instruction.

I like how the "goth" stereotype has now turned into "emo" so rapidly.

It's basically a trend, which is usually associated with music. I've never seen a goth myself, but I'm sure they exist. I don't know how anybody could stand being one for a long period of time, it's about as intelligent as cutting yourself for bragging rights. Then again, Cradle of Filth wouldn't sell a single album if they didn't represent themselves as gothic symbols.

Most of the "Goth" you see is not really Goth. It's naïve kids imitating the bad representations of Goth you see in 1990's movies. And yes, it's a passhing phase, so laugh loud and openly at them while you still have the chance.

By the way, I was in high school from '95 until '00. It was damned funny when most of the goths at school were into Marilyn Manson, and then Marilyn Manso just dropped the Gothic image all of a sudden. :tpg:

I think during that time period, most of the dancing was done by travelling shows. For the most part, I think that dancing was outlawed, or at least discouraged, by the Roman Church.
Following this line of thinking, perhaps you should look up some gypsy dances.

DRAKO Mar 30, 2006 08:58 PM

what i try to say it is ... in theory, do you dance as you "feel" the music?

Summonmaster Mar 30, 2006 10:29 PM

I always just assumed that they sway back and forth with legs rooted firmly in place, much like normal teens at a depressing concert. Changing the imaginary lightbulb sounds intriguing.

DRAKO Mar 31, 2006 07:24 AM

...grin...like in the simpson´s episode where appears smashing pumpinks?
hehe--

Fjordor Mar 31, 2006 02:44 PM

In all honesty, I have never met a gothic person who was so totally "gothic" that they would not be at all active. All people have passions, and the gothic people that I have known usually have a tendency to rock out to metal music just as much as the next person.
In other words, I don't think there is really any specal form of gothic dance. They just ultimately do what everyone else does.

russ Mar 31, 2006 04:58 PM

Of course, this "inactive" dance style is fully derived from the pot that was smoked just prior to engaging in the dancing activity.

Oh ya! That's where I got that image from. My assumption was that :$
I'm still surprised that there are all these ridiculously named special steps.

daxy Apr 1, 2006 06:00 AM

Actually in Holland it's more of one of the many big lifestyles.

I know a lot of older people that wear those weird gothic dresses. It just makes them look fat though.

DRAKO Apr 1, 2006 08:57 AM

in theory, the black it make you more thiner...

Mercury Blue Apr 1, 2006 09:24 AM

My town is full of little girls playing goth, my 14 yr old sister is one of them. :\ Well, the site was pretty funny to me, but to her...it got me yelled at just now.

I know a few older people who do the whole goth look, but more or less it's a teenage kind of thing, esp with fourteen yr olds right now. Eh, they are going to get older, out grow that phase, look back on the pictures of them selves during that phase and go "ICK!"
Thank god I never went through that phase...

Shadow Drax Apr 1, 2006 10:30 AM

Theres not many "Goths" around here, just little girls trying to act it. It's not quite as "in" as it was, a few years back when I was finishing high school, the place was full of them....It's quite funny (in a sick kind of way) really, some of them get all the tattoos and the piercings, then later when they try to grow out of it...!

DRAKO Apr 16, 2006 01:28 PM

it is funny how "easy" be a goth..
you just have to get a jack skellington t-shirt..

although this halloween the "v for vendetta" mask will be the blast...

Deviancy Apr 20, 2006 05:21 AM

It depends on what your definition of a goth is...

The music came from punk and was called post punk or positive punk in the late 70's early eighties. Bands like The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus and the like were considered the first generation. After that it was the Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim and the like and then these days its bands like The Cruxshadows. The media clung on to Manson in the late 90's because a lot of metal kids thought he was goth. It was just yet another bad media misrepresentation though. Manson fans were considered "spooky kids" or "mallgoths" because of how they were trendy. They usually were 14-18 and they grew out of it with time. As for "goths" as in those who listen to the old music and the current stuff.. I know quite a few pushing close to 50 if not a few older ones. They don't run around in outfits they found at Hot Topic nor do they listen to black metal and all of these bad numetal bands many kids today confuse as goth.

As for the depression.. a lot of the older as well as the newer bands are socially aware.. ie: political or somewhat self reflective. Politcal material is depressing ;).. I mean look at the US's current administration ;)...
