Gaming into the Wee Hours

You all know the feeling: you're playing ________ and you/your character just reached level 15 and the game is finally picking up. You're getting your new powers and the plot's really starting to develop. But it's 11 PM. You promise to cap your gaming at 30 more minutes but in an hour, you just had your first face-off with your central antagonist and this cutscene, no, you just can't skip it. So you keep playing, you keep playing until that LCD clock beside you is reading 11:00. AM.

The question is to what extent have you ever done this? My most recent experience was with Knights of the Old Republic 2. I'd been playing it on my 360 and ever since it started getting more exciting with the force powers, I pretty much plowed on through regardless of time. I found myself going to bed at 4:30 AM.

The funny thing is I know so many others are going to outdo that time so shoot.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 29, 2006 05:19 AM

I remember playing through Kana in a single sitting and going to bed at 7 am. I kept thinking it would end in the next 30 minutes, but the story kept going and when it finally ended, it was morning :(

Twice now I've finished both ICO and Vagrant Story in the same way as above, thinking I'll reach the ending quickly from where I was and completely misjudging the remaining time, finally actually finishing around 5 am.

I'm not a marathon gamer though, so I more often just play late than for actually long sessions. Usually if I notice it's really late when I stop playing, depending on what kind of schedule I have the next day, I might not go to bed at all and try to stay up till the next evening.

LS Mar 29, 2006 05:23 AM

This just happened to me recently, while playing Shadow Hearts 3 From the new world, i would start playing at 8Am then i'll tell myself i'll be finished at 10am when it comes to 10:00 am i'll say "okay 15 minutes more" yeah those are the games that is fairly addicting, Too bad that game only lasted for 30 hours ;_; now i'm spending my time on Suikoden V.

B4-Hunter Mar 29, 2006 05:26 AM

Final Fantasy XII... yesterday I mean today at the morning. I noticed what time is it when my alarm clock turned on. I said: OMG I need to go to work! Now I'm like a zombie and I'm trying to do what I have to =P It's hard...

Earlier before FF XII it was when I got my self Unreal XMP I was so sucked in Online play that I realized it when my mother entered the room at 9 AM and asked: Oh your awake already? I said like: LoL yeah just got up =P.

Spatula Mar 29, 2006 09:03 AM

Mine was probably MGS2 which I just wanted to wrap it up after delaying it for months on end. After a while I got sick of Raiden, but then I just wanted to put an end to it, so I started playing at about 9 PM and finally saw the ending bit at 3 AM. Needless to say, with pretty much MOST Metal Gear endings, it's best to see them while you're still half awake. Generally I don't go past 1 AM as it takes too much brain power, and if I'm still up by then, then I do something requiring less brain usage, like studying Japanese lurking on GFF.

Somehow, this totally reminds me of the "TRUE LOVE" game that I thought would be over in 45 minutes but took over 3 hours (mainly because of fapping obbservation time), and I think I stayed up till about 4 AM to finish it, all only to pick the wrong girl at the end, WITHOUT SAVING THE GAME.

I just got an old flashback while reading "TRUE LOVE". I remember playing some game for a long time ago, maybe this is it. I remember something about a swimming contest, and you have to save some little girl about to drown or something. Is this it? :O

Back to topic, me and a friend sat around with Soul Calibur 2 from around 10pm to 8am, beating Weapon Master, unlocking loads of stuff and having random VS battles.

Also with Zone of The Enders, I sat up for around 6 hours and completed it in one sitting (too bad it's so short). What's funny is that I got Zone of The Enders 2 THE VERY NEXT DAY, and everything repeated.

Single Elbow Mar 29, 2006 11:31 AM

If TRUE LOVE was a time-waster, rest assured, you haven't even played GLORIA yet. If you ask me though, TOKIMEKI CHECK-IN is my favorite for all time.

Subject matter. I have to be honest that I play until well to the wee-hours. I mean, Shin Onimusha was keeping up the pace at first which made me ignore it until that moment where I must upgrade 3 weapons to the maximum level and the 5 character armors, acquire all their movelists and progress to the story at the same time made me stay for about 6 hours.. which isn't very good.

Not only in action games but in alot of RPGs as well. Oh well, since I'm usually out for the most part, I may not try to play until the wee hours in the morning.

Lukage Mar 29, 2006 11:32 AM

I find 4 or 5 hours in the middle of the night to just disappear when I'm playing DotA on Frozen Throne. And the games only last 30-60 minutes. Weird.

Yes that is correct. It's the pink haired virgin one. Then after you two play video games AND HAVE SEX! =o!

That would make the main character a pedo though. lololoo

:(

Hell for all I know, one of the best was that brainy girl who got snatched and the kidnapper tried to shoot you with a pellet gun. Fucking priceless.

Then you ram her rear. AWESOME!

Josiah Mar 29, 2006 01:51 PM

Diablo 2 would be the most recent for me. Which is quite recent actually. I decided to pick it up again because my onboard video card can actually handle it all right. I've been up till 8am some nights playing through that. It's always the whole, "I'll stop when I find the next waypoint" deal and then you just keep doing that until you finish the act or finally you notice it's getting light outside and you think...

She's my favorite, Remi. <3

I should dig up that old screen capture when I helped Infernal out. It was great! FAP TIME!

So here's my theory: FAP games should be played late at night, and that's how these H-games tie into this thread. See? NO DERAILMENT AT ALL.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 29, 2006 02:51 PM

Come to think of it, both Tokimeki Check-in and Brave Soul have also kept me up pretty late, in an effort to finish them, so your theory is quite right, Spatula.

Lately I've been playing Disgaea a lot, trying to reach the ending, and my playsessions have gone all the way to 3-4 am usually.

Spatula Mar 29, 2006 03:15 PM

I got about 1/2 way through DO YOU LIKE HORNY BUNNIES 2? But the animation and art was horible. Terrible story and the characters are all stock. I want to try one of those 3D Dating/Hgames that Akai keeps posting in his journal. And plus you think you're making quick progress just by pressing the speed button to speed through the text, but holy cow there is a TON of text in these games. ;_;

TITS OR GTFO!

Spyer Mar 29, 2006 03:16 PM

It was about a year ago that I was playing Rreturn To Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Anyway, I pulled and all-dayer play the game. I started at 7am and finished at 2:30 am. The next day, I slept for 13 hours. Oh, the good old times.

goldeneye2131 Mar 29, 2006 04:58 PM

This happened for me on only two games: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. I was so addicted, I would go and go and go...however, if my mom sent me to bed at 1:00 or later, I'd be up at 6 AM playing it again until the late hours of the night. I never thought this would happen again after the greatness of those two games, but I have a feeling that the Twilight Princess will bring me back to 1998...

In that case stay away from Kana since that has so much story, the moment you see someone naked it feels massively out of place.

Ryuu Mar 29, 2006 05:05 PM

Final Fantasy IX.

My friend let me borrow it for the weekend. I started playing at 8 AM Saturday, finished up at 10-11 PM that night.

I finished the weekend nearing the end of disk 3 - farther than he ever got.

Kaiten Mar 29, 2006 05:30 PM

There's a few games (Diablo 2 comes to mind), but my favorite game lock was on my first playthrough Half-Life back in 2002. I spent at least six hours playing tha game and got past the first boss, I though 'what an awesome game'. It's the reason I don't suck at fps games anymore.
Needless to say I was pissed when my uncle uninstalled the game, thus destoying my near-beaten save file.
Red Alert 2 (for the PSX) was my other obesession, I'd play that with my cousin, commonly until 4:00AM, building up a huge tank army and hoarding massive amounts of resources before we tried to beat eah other.

Newbie1234 Mar 29, 2006 05:30 PM

Similar case with me.

Diablo 2 at one point completely flipped my life upside down. I recall at one point I played so much over the summer I'd forget which day it is, if I'd eaten real food or not, and whether I'd taken a bath yet.

Rydia Mar 29, 2006 06:00 PM

I did this when I was in elementary school since I didn't seem to get tired during those days. At the time, the only game I really put much effort into was Final Fantasy VII. I think the latest I played this one was until about 2 AM.

Like I mentioned earlier as well, Tokimeki Check-in is my most favorite of all time, second and third are Season of the Sakura and True Love respectively.

Heck, even I sometimes waste about 5 hours playing only one of them. GLORIA makes me waste about 7. It's brutal and with over 60 endings.

Elixir Mar 29, 2006 07:18 PM

Disgaea is like crack, man. Seriously. I'm avoiding Disgaea because I will know that once I pick it up, I won't put it down.

And basically any Pop'n Music or IIDX title. Since they have endless replay value you can go all night with these things. I don't exactly have much time for games these days, as I'm doing shift work, but yeah. Definitely avoid Disgaea if you can.

/R/ Tokimeki Check-in. PM me some screenshots, or I could just use google image. How long is this game in general if you read each line quickly?

Ayumi was what originally drew me to game, but I've now found I'm also partial to Natsuki and Makoto (above) quite a bit, although Yuki is definitely my favorite:

http://engbishoujo.tripod.com/pictures/yuki-full.gif

Her plot just seemed sweet and she had a nice amount of depth to her compared to most characters.

I think the game is a good 6-7 hours if you read everything, but I might be wrong. I tended to save and try multiple options and reloading, to determine which "direction" I wanted to head, so I might have judged the time a bit wrong. It pays to read all the text though. There isn't much of a plot, but the simple story and dialogue adds immensely to the delightful, cheery atmosphere, which is why I liked it so much.

Before Kana came along, Tokimeki Check-in was my absolute favorite as well. It was the combination of great character designs and art, cheery story and atmosphere and multiple paths that makes me love it. The music and voices are nice too, although I can't get the music to play through the game so I had to listen to it manually on my winamp :tpg:

Spatula Mar 29, 2006 08:11 PM

This is most excellent news, I must have slayed this 16 fags pretty quick eh Q?

Adds site to favorites. ^___^

Mucknuggle Mar 29, 2006 08:41 PM

So back in the day when I first played Chrono Trigger on my SNES I realized that it was suddenly like 11 PM - I had started playing at like 6 or 7 AM (I get up really early).

Just the other day I stayed up until like 2 AM playing Oblivion - and since I have mono and tend to get super tired by 10 PM, that was really late.

TRZD Mar 29, 2006 09:38 PM

I remember when I first got FF8 that for the first week or so I played it nonstop for about 10 hours a day. I think I started again about 3-4 times at some point on disc 2 to make sure I didn't complete it too soon, I was that hooked. Eventually I got a massive headache and had to take it a bit easy.

As for latest staying up playing a game, it has to be some sort of Championship Manager/Football Manager, I've stayed up until like 5am playing that before just always telling myself "just one more match..." over and over. So addictive.

JasonTerminator Mar 30, 2006 04:04 AM

I'll admit, Tokimeki Check-In is the only Jap sex game to interest me more than 10 minutes.

I'm not sure if I should blame good localization or what. It's probably more because it's one of the few sex games that don't have sex starting up in the middle of a conversation.

"Hello Megumi-Chan. Nice to meet y-"
*Megumi goes down on you.*

I don't think I could play an H-game all night though.

Truth. Especially when things are going well. Although, tweaking tactics and such when things aren't going well also tends to make the hours fly by.

I once sat in my chair and loaded up my Liverpool game in FM '05 at around 9pm. After what seems like an hour I glance up to the digital clock on one of the shelves and it's 2am.

I look back at my screen, and click "continue". I think that's what it's called -- haven't played it in soooooo long.

I see i'm not the only one with this problem. I once managed a 13 hour marathon. From around 6PM till 7AM the following morning. I get this problem with Oblivion now though. I'm up until at least 3AM playing after starting around 10PM.

Summonmaster Mar 30, 2006 11:02 PM

I third Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Lots and lots of fun pushing to get that next weapon tech. A couple of months ago I played the Valgipus IV stage about 75 times straight to level up my 3X3 techs. I realized that I could have sped up the weapon mastery/levelling up process immensely if I had only gathered Armsmasters/Statisticians BEFORE I splurged on Valgipus IV levelling. Now I'm doing it right at Field of Virtue in Celestia, and still marathoning until 3am to do it. The latest I've gone is 4 am when I suddenly realized how much damage I was causing my eyes :s

Similarly, I would stay up until 3 am to just keep trying to get jp for my techs in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

Last time, I played Lumines until 3:30 am trying to get to Water, Flower, and Lights, but I was thrown off at the Birds skin and had died by the time I had only reached 300,000 or so points.

Years ago, I was playing Chrono Cross and I had woke up at 4 am realized that I had left Chrono Cross on at some point in Gaea's Navel and dozed off at sometime while playing it, controller still in hand.

When I do stay up now, it'll be until 1 am or 2 am. No more crazy runthroughs at night.

speculative Mar 31, 2006 12:17 AM

When I was a kid, when I'd stay at the grandparents while my parents were gone, they let me rent a Nintendo (I wasn't allowed to own one :o ) and I would go pick one up at like 8 am when the store opened, then play all day, then play all night, then all day the next day until late afternoon when I would have to return it. (This was the olden days - you could only rent it for a day at a time. So, that was actually more than 24 hours straight.

I also once played Anarchy Online for 30 hours while in college. I played with the Europeans a lot, which is a bad idea if you like sleep! No more mmo's for me...

Dark Nation Mar 31, 2006 03:55 AM

Oh man, I was literally OBSESSED with playing Oblivion... but I finally got to the point of overplayed feeling, so I could finally quit. That is NOT a game to play if you have stuff to get done with. I think I spent 4 hours straight (No breaks) one night with it this week... but I have since dropped of its graps for the time being.

Winter Storm Mar 31, 2006 03:26 PM

Ah the fight with Luca Blight comes to mind. It was about 11:30 and my bedtime was set at 12:00AM. It took 6 attempts to kill him, and even after I bested him in the paty battles, he managed to kill me in the duel, so I had to start over again. All of this ran me well over my bedtime and I didn't hit the sack til 1:30AM.

Golden Eye and Perfect Dark were my all dayer+nighter games. You know..playing in the evening until the next morning lol.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 31, 2006 06:28 PM

I started Zelda 3 again earlier tonight (after finishing Disgaea), it's now 2:20 AM and I just reached the Dark World after beating Agahnim.

I had to stop, since last night I played Disgaea till 5 AM. There is something just so utterly compelling to investigating every nook and cranny of Huryle, but luckily it's easier to take a break from than Disgaea's "one more level up, then I'll stop". Plus the Item Worlds were horribly addicting too. The second you manage to level up an item you intend to use, you notice you've gotten another useful weapon you feel compelled to level up as well ;_;

ROBOTRON Mar 31, 2006 06:30 PM

I have weekly gaming parties at my house every Friday...we regularly run from 9pm to 4am...a couple times when I get hold of a great new game (Like when I got N4 for gamecube) we'll play till sun up.
