Mario Kart Wii - EU/AU get it first! WE HAVE NO GENITALS.
FRIEND CODE LIST HERE!
Anyway, EU/AU get the game first before US because Nintendo screwed them by not releasing SSBB until 2009 or something... http://image.com.com/gamespot/images...2975_front.jpg ...and a list of "features" (or ignore everything I say and just watch a video preview here): - Five Controller Schemes: Wii Wheel, Wii-mote, Classic, Gamecube, Wii-mote + Nunchuck. - Play as yourself in your Mii form (or any Mii that you created/downloaded from the Check Mii Out Channel). - There's kart AND motorcycles. - Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for online racing, battles, ghost data, ranks and league (Duh! Nintendo would be stupid not to include Wi-Fi and it seem it will be better online game than SSBB!)*. - 32 Tracks and 10 Battle Stages. - YOU CAN DO STUNTS! - Oh, you can't "snake" in the game. Nintendo removed it. It's more of "the longer you hold/powerslide the more boost you get". *MKWii will be installing a Mario Kart Channel for the online part. You can quicky add Friend Code without launching the game itself, see if any of your friend online and racing/battling, download ghost data and see ranks. The league part might be a rumor as I didn't hear any more info about it. I have to say, for the online part, it's looking pretty good and surpass SSBB online by a landslide. I heard that you can text chat with friends while setting up a room to get the race/battle going. You can join in a middle of a race and/or watch current race. The best part of all IMO, unlike SSBB, if one person lag, other player won't suffer in a race/battle... but then you'll get your usual "jumping around" karts. :tpg: I don't know what else to add/comment. JP/EU is getting on the 10th/11th, AU on 24th and US on the 27th. I'm going to spoil myself by playing the JP version first and I know for sure I won't get the US version until a week later after it release. :D Discuss! >_> |
Looks good. My 'rents just bought a Wii by pure luck and since they like Mario Kart (as does just about everyone else I know who has the slightest interest in video games), I'm sure they'll pick this up.
Amazing that the U.S. version is released last. But I guess it's only fair given the number of title that go to the U.S. first. |
I'm just glad to see that you don't have to use the Wii Wheel. Dig the new powerslide concept, too.
|
PAL regions get this first because they have to quickly fuck over the Freeloader to prevent 'dem scum playin' dat Smashing Sister Fightin' game. :] Aside from having one of the shittiest box arts I've ever seen (more like Mario Fart lol do you get it they're racing in the air which is made up of their farts lolololololol I replaced one word with another here comes 1992), this should be pretty rad. DK flailing about on a pissy little motorbike like a clown = yes.
|
This game looks fun and will most likely be great.
And I don't think a 16 day difference is that bad between EU and NA. I mean hell...you guys will get Smash Bros in 4000 days or something like that. I can't wait to see how successful the Online is after the tasty experience with Smash |
The Mario Kart games are some of the best racing games out there. (Of course your typical racing game elitist would probably say "lol japan gay") They're so fun, and this one looks like it adds some nice features to a pretty solid and fluid formula. It's worked 4 times before, and it'll work again. <3
Australia never gets games first. :( STILL NOT SATISFIED, MARIO |
I still remember when I broke the Mario Kart arcade thing trying to do the drift lol. Tried it and froze the game.
|

That sliding system snaking crap in the DS game practically ruined it for me. Anytime I went on WiFi my entire race had to be nonstop snaking or else I'd be embarrassingly last place. |
Reportedly, people who use the classic controller / GCN pad will have gimped controls. I believe the official quote was that we "won't be able to perform certain techniques".
They're really pushing the wheel. :( |
It's cool that Europe gets the game around the same time Japan does. I originally thought this meant that the US version would be released months and not weeks later, so it's also cool to see that in the end Europe still has it bad when it comes to releases. :(
Feeling kind of apprehensive about the character selection. I'm absolutely not a fan of baby characters, so I don't really fancy the idea of having them take up a large portion of the roster (I never played Double Dash). Aside from that, the game looks to be a lot of fun. I'll probably end up using the wheel due to not having a classic or a GCN controller. |
Good lord, they've doubled the tracks from previous Mario Kart games (with the exception of DS) and I'm curious to see which characters will make it in. However, I just hope Nintendo fixes the online portion because Smash suffers from that.
|
If I remember correctly, I read on IGN that you have to tilt the wheel upwards to do a wheelie on the bike. That would probably be one of the "gimped" controls for the GCN/classic controller, which is a huge bummer.

Wow, sure sucks that Nintendo is trying to get people to use the controllers that actually come with the console and all.
|
I would totally buy this and play it online if I could drive a landmaster and run over Kairyu with it.
|
Star Fox Racing confirmed for 2010.
If the GCN's too gimped, I guess I'll suck it up and get used to the wheel. :/ |

12 Player Online will be fucking epic. I'll be playing this for years.

I'll just hold the remote sideways if anything. I'll be pleasantly surprised if the motion controls for this are anything beyond totally tacked-on. |

All media sources? You're definitely getting ahead of yourself. I've only read one review that claimed the "Wii Wheel" was unusable. The rest that I've read have said it takes a little getting used to, which is to be expected.

Okay normally I would hate that they're pushing a peripheral as the main controller, but since its packed in with the game, and I don't have to buy it seperately, and there are FOUR other control schemes available, I don't have a problem with this.
Video was pretty informative, but I noticed a lot of BLUR to hide the lower resolution graphics (As compared to Brawl). Now online I could see why that might be done, after all you want to keep a good framerate going, but offline it should be close to the level established by brawl. I'm definitely be interested in that 12 player online though. |
I was hoping that I'd be able to just walk into a store and buy a Wii before this came out, but it looks like I will have no such luck. Mario Kart is a definite console seller for me and from the looks of this one, it will be a good one. The motorbike thing kinds of seems silly to me but I can mostly overlook that.
|
They're still incredibly hard to find. It took two weeks for me to get mine. My parents ended up finding out that a Wal-Mart near them while they were out of town was getting a shipment in at midnight. At like 12:40 or so, they got the last one. Things sell like hotcakes.
Looking forward to Wi-Fi. I just hope MKWii feels tighter than DD!! did. After I got so used to how tight MKDS played, I couldn't stand to play DD!! anymore. Felt like I was sliding all over the place. |
Only problem with the "pushed" Wheel control, for me, is picking up more of them. My roommate and I share a Wii, so hopefully I can pick up one (or three, when more players want to come over) at release without too much trouble.
It just won't be right if one guy has the Wheel control and the other three are using something else. You get an instant recipe for complaining about "unbalanced play" at the end of every race... ^_^ Hopefully the price won't be too high (come on, glorified plastic shell, save the extra controls). I also fear that if I wait too long to pick more up, there may be a shortage... |
I'm pretty cised for this game, and I'm looking forward to no more snaking, though I was pretty dominating with that anyway. =p
I'm also really looking forward to using the wheel over the other controller schemes (so I hope they are gimped as hell). I enjoyed using the Wii-mote for BIG DAMN TRUCKS, and I figure it'll be about the same for MKWII, just a different orientation and all plus glorified round plastic. Double Dash!! was one of the funnest games to have back in college, so I'm really looking forward to some fun multi-player hi-jinx when this comes. looking forward looking forward looking forward omg look back :tpg: |
Like I said MKWii online shouldn't be as bad as SSBB since it doesn't need precise syncing/timing on everybody and it's great that you can race up to 11 other people (12 total). I also heard that for online battle it needs to be a team of two player each. That would suck if there's an odd amount of player doing battle (unless they add a CPU player).
As for the controller, I'll try all to see which I like but most likey I'll end up uing the classic or GCN controller scheme. :( |
Quote:
|
Yeah, I guess I jump the gun there. >_>
Update rumor: For online battle, instead of team of two player each, it's now 6-vs-6. The game is going to be release in JP/EU in a fweek... Why don't they just tell us everything? |
This sounds pretty awesome so far. Can't wait for April 28th. I probably won't be picking this up launch day though since a lot of other games are on my radar and I'm pretty sure they have a much shorter shelf span than Mario Kart Wii, which I can probably predict to be selling well into 2009 and probably 2010, for the same reason why I could easily walk into a Best Buy today and find Mario Kart: Double Dash!! at the retail $29.99.
As for the controls. I'd still probably use the GCN unless there are A LOT more gimps coming. And if there are, I'd revert to the Nunchuck+Wiimote as I'm pretty sure only the GCN and the Classic controllers are gimped. Nunchuck+Wiimote still feels like a traditional controller, except detached from each other and the motion controls will still be there. I could live with that. |
Heh, the game is already leaked on teh interweb. >_>
First impression? Well I didn't do much because a bunch of my online friend just want to get online and do some racing and battles. I only play with the GCN controller so I can't say much now except like it was expected: gimped ...well if you don't mind doing tricks then GCN or classic controller is your friend. My brother did try with the remote and said it plays a lot like Excite Truck but he didn't get a chance to do any tricks. Online racing is just like MKDS... but it seems much more fun and that a second local player can join online too. I kept thinking that I could "snake" in some course *coughDScoursecough* but realized it's gone. I'll miss it but still enjoy the gameplay. Online battle... This just tops it. It was missing from the DS and having a bunch of other people from across the world makes it exciting and fun! Now I don't have to relay on my cousin to play battle mode! :tpg: As for lags? Well there's always lag... but it isn't the same kind of lag that you'll get from a certant "fighting" game because of it's nature. So my online experience was "lag-free". I'll have moar impression as I progressive through the game. :) Oh, Mario Kart Wii game audio rip anyone? lol |
Quote:
|
I'll would rip it in vbr mp3 but right now I'm putting it on hold. As Basil PMed me about it I just found out that some music have more than 2 channels and in_cube doesn't play it at all. So I'm waiting for hcs64.com to either have a fix for in_cube or release their new and rework plugin vgmstream. Sorry.
Small Impression Update: Seems like you can do tricks using the GCN or classic controller via D-pad. Also, unlike Brawl, I can use any controller scheme and each and everyone of them works out great. But if I have to put them in order, it would be: GCN, classic, wiimote/steering wheel then wiimote+nunchuck. |
Ah, alright. Let me know if you get it resolved. I haven't played the game yet, but as a general rule, Mario Kart music's pretty awesome. Don't see why MKWii would break that tradition.

I think my name will be Daniel. |
Nice to see someone posting their Friend Code. Hopefully more people will post their too since the game already release in Japan, Europe now Australia and over the weekend North America.
I'll post my FC as soon as I get my US copy. :) |
Same here. I was actually gonna buy the game later on, but my brother is nudging me to go and buy it.
I might hit up that event going on at the Nintendo World Store this Saturday when I'm in NYC to try the game out and possibly get that Mario Kart Driver's License. :3: |
Infernal's fiend code for Marieo Cart Wee
1762-3017-3279 Pretty decent game, the graphics hurt my eyes with their weird.. soft.. lighting.. bullshit but hey. Donkey Kong makes the BEST NOISES EVER. EVER. Edit: Oh my God, seriously. DK's noises. It's worth playing the game just for this. I haven't laughed at a game so much in years. Fuck. My lungs. I almost DIED tonight. |
0130-2184-9480
Got mine up at work at our midnight release. I'll see you guys on later today. EDIT: OH GOD! INFERNAL IS RIGHT! |
So this has turned out to be pretty much my favorite Marieo Cart game since Marieo Cart 65. Single player is still complete bullshit (another game for OP's cheating AI thread!) but all the new tracks (aside from 'Toad's Fucking Stupid Fuckface Factory for Faggots Like Toad') are REALLY good. Koopa Cape and Maple Treeway hooooly shiiiit. The extremely basic trick system is fun, too. Especially as DK, on a motor bike. Because he does a handstand while sounding like he's in the middle of a mental breakdown.
Online's handled a lot better than the garbage heap that was Marieo Cart PSP, but there's still that typical Nintendo charm of being booted out of a match mere seconds before it's about to begin, so you've gotta begin the waiting process allll ooovver aaaagaaaaain. You don't need any skill at all for online, it's hilarious. Coming last place means shit all, as the game will hurl the most overpowered items your way non-stop and you'll suddenly find yourself in first place in the blink of an eye. Serious business people will probably get pissed off at this. The selection of battle mode maps includes my favorite one from the SNES and N64, so ummmffffffffffoooh yeah chugga bur wur. I'm yet to try the Wii Wheel, because I'm no good with quick motion controls, but the Classic Controller is nice~ Graphics? Rubbish. Music? Mostly rubbish (there's a pretty unexpected awesome song that plays during Moo Moo Meadows). 0/10 overall, buy Space Station Silicon Valley instead. |
I used the wheel right away, but I might snag my Wavebird and give that a whirl. I do like now the choice for some people to just do automatic drifting.
Also, they do what Brawl doesn't: They let you do a 2-player WiFi. You and a friend in your living room can race online and the wait times seem to be very low. It'll even tell you who you're playing against and where they live. NINTENDO IS TAKING A RISK! Also, each "license" (read: Mii) has its own friend code. Ugh. Oh well, looks solid. |
LAWWWWLLAAUUUGH Mario Kart. This wheel thing will make a great projectile when someone uninvited barges into my house. I'll keep it.
1848-2078-5218. Now to see what all this DK business is about. Edit: Aahahahaha what the fuck. |
My magical mystery code is 1719-3591-0589; I've registered the folks who have posted so far.
I've only played a small bit, but my observation so far is that single player AI cheats waaaaaay too much, but online is great. My only complaint with online is that there's no way to exit out of a match except after you've played a round. I don't want to drop out in the middle of a race, but I also may not want to wait 3+ minutes for others to finish their game before I can join, with no way to exit out. I have a short attention span like that. |
Just popped it in, pretty good fun, but the computers will anal rape you on the last lap. >_<
And DK is just absolutely hilarious. :tpg: Friend code? Coming soon. |
Could someone make a wiki page for MKWii FC? I'm not sure how to make a new page... just know how to edit. lol >_>
And my Friend Code is coming soon too! I want to unlocked all course on my US copy first. XD |
I skipped the GCN generation of Mario Kart, so I'm a bit out of practice. Needless to say, there's a lot to get used to with Mario Kart Wii...
I don't seem to remember there being such a big emphasis on stage hazards. First thing I could think of when I started the 50cc races was "WTF THAT'S BS" at all the various crap on the stages. Really hate how hitting any sort of wall or obstacle at all kills your speed completely. Then there's that fraggin' AI. Every single race, there's a lightning bolt, blue shell, ink blot and pow block without fail. I don't even get any of that stuff when I get booted to 12th, but oh well. Wii wheel is kind of fun to use, though I don't think I'll be using it for "serious" races. When I play games my right hand is usually a bit lower than my left, so I'm constantly shifting to the right. The strap is also a little uncomfortable, as you kind of have to grasp the wheel AND the strap at the same time. So far I'm having a serious nostalgia hit for Mario Kart 64, but as I get used to MKW I suppose my opinion of the game will rise. FC: 4940-5845-8316 |
The big annoyances are the walls and the debris.
Yes, the chomp chomp and whatnot is fine, but random goombas everywhere is ANNOYING, especially since they should do less damage to us than we do to them. But uhh, just take the strap off. |
Here's a tip to "counter" the POW block:
Right when the POW block disappear/on it's 3rd "pow", shake the wiimote/press on any direction on the D-pad. If your timing is right you either don't spin out or spin out ONCE and won't loose speed but still loose any items you're carrying. |
Here's my friend code:
Kiba - 1289-8626-1918 So does anyone here play on automatic? And who do you people use? As for me, I shuffle between Bowser and Baby Mario. What different ends of the spectrum! But what bothers me the most about the computers is the barrage of items that usually come in on the final stretch. You're just about to win and then you get a Blooper, Red Shell, Blue Shell, and a random banana, all in that order to stop you. After the barrage, you find yourself in at least 9th place and screaming at the top of your lungs wondering how the fuck that all happened. And has anyone unlocked any expert ghost times yet? |
Quote:
Friends only though. Wheel is fun, but my room has issues with the signal the Wiimote sends out so sometimes I end up driving off the course. The AI has insane items. Items I have never seen, and I have had my fair share of time in last place. I have to wonder what Nintendo was thinking making GP 1 Player only though. In any case, it is not fun to be in first place and then take 6 blue shells in a row, 2 lightning bolts, get ran over by a giant person, and then get smashed by a bullet bill all in sequence. Then you grab the item box and get a Triple Green Shell. What the heck? DK makes up for it though with his amazing noises. FC: 1075-1137-7512 |
I'm getting into the single player stuff before I venture into the suposedly awesome multiplayer online stuff. I've yet to play a Wii game online and am hoping everything will go swimmingly. ^.~ But yeah I'm fairly impressed with the single player aspect to the game. There are some insane level designs (Infernal's right, Koopa Cape and Maple Treeway are so awesome (they made me pass out...but I still came first 'cause I got 3 stars in a row lol)) and the new Rainbow Road is absolutely trippy. I also actually like some of the interpretations of old tracks. While the choices aren't the greatest (Peach's Garden? Desert Hills?! lyk worst ds trax evar), the good ones really shine on the Wii. I especially like the two DK tracks for some reason. Really vivid~ (and I enjoy DK's noises, yes I do!) Speaking of noise, the music in this kart installment is actually kinda nice to listen to. I find Koopa Cape's fast-paced-ness when on the rapids an exceptionally nice touch. And I like Mushroom Gorge's music~!
I've been using the Wii Wheel and am actually really pleased wit' it. Smooth turns and nice synchronisation and stuff. I used the Wii Remote by itself and that was so lame I wanted to fall off the edge of Rainbow Road in frustration...accidentally. *cough* The AI cheats something fierce; this one time I was in first place on the third lap and I got struck by POWER!, zapped by a FLYING BLUE SHELL and pwned by a MALICIOUS RED SHELL all in succession. I was still first at the end of this 'cause I'm so awesome but I got cocky and ended up losing the race :) (but I guess that AI cheating stuff is old news huh guys~~~). I've yet to unlock all the characters but I adamantly rotate between Yoshi, Luigi and Diddy Kong. I actually think Luigi's screams of fear when hurled through the air are more entertaining than DK's...maybe. Oh yeah and Baby Peach can go die in a horrific stroller explosion or something. |
I pretty much exclusively use Luigi when I play online, most of the time in the Standard Kart, but occasionally I'll crank the Wild Wing. Offline though, I'll basically use whoever. Also I've only unlocked enough ghost times to unlock Baby Luigi.
Also LOL @ those who are angry about losing speed when hitting walls. What's supposed to happen? |

As for the Wii Wheel, I don't really have a huge amount of problems using it, but I'd prefer to use the GC controller since I could do everything that the Wii Wheel provides with more ease than the wheel itself. It's hard to pull off a wheelie for some odd reason with the Wheel... For the GC controller, I just gotta tap up on the D-pad. Makes my life ten times easier! Additional Spam: Quote:

It's not just this game though. I just get pissed whenever I hit a wall because I shouldn't! I'm too good of a player to be hitting a wall at this point!
|
In previous Mario Karts, unless you hit a wall perfectly dead on it wouldn't result in a total loss of speed. More often than not, you just ricochet off the obstacle or bounce backwards a bit before continuing forwards. The change in Mario Kart Wii, coupled with supreme AI item gangbanging, can be pretty frustrating late in a race.
But hey, I guess we can't all be VIDEO GAME PRODIGIES. EDIT: Took the liberty of making a wiki page for MKWii FCs. I only put in a handful of FCs, so someone else can dump in the rest if they'd like. Guess I should also mention the usual "PM me if you add me so I know to add you back" bit here. |
It was like that in MK: DS, but if you hit a wall there it was alot more debilitating. Also I really haven't been affected by "Item Rape" at all, I've been hit by an item at a inopportune time and fallen into lava or something. But it's nowhere near to the extent where I find it a problem.
One more thing, if you think the sounds DK makes are something, unlock Funky. |
Since I noticed this in Brawl also... Do profile (Mii) names serve a big deal here? Just thought we should add profile names again just so we know who we're facing when we all race together.
|
Yeah, I'll be going around and throwing in profile names. I'm not using my default Mii, I'm actually using lil' Nanoha, so those who add me will see TAKAMACHI NANTOKA.
In other news, we need to get some MP racing on sometime tonight. TONIGHT. Who is down and when. |
Given I don't have to write any papers tonight or anything, I'll see if I could pop in online. I'm up for a nice race.
|
Has anyone here managed to triple-star a GP cup yet? I've been trying and trying to get THREE STARS on 50cc, but I haven't succeeded yet--maybe I just suck :(
Anyway, this is turning out to be one of my favorite MKs, but the CPU AI is severely frustrating. Item rape, as others have mentioned in this thread, seems to be entirely inevitable; the game uses it as an artificial increase of difficulty to some degree. Get far enough in first place and I can guarantee there will be a cavalcade of blue shells (and who knows what else) raining down upon you. Suddenly ::12th place:: I have consistently enjoyed the single player aspect of all the other Mario Kart games, but that might not be the case with this one when I finally move on to 150cc. Unbalancedness be damned, but I really don't see how getting hit with seven items in a row for doing nothing more than having the audacity to keep first place for long enough is all that balanced. Though, I think that sort of unfairness is something of a strength for MKW; the fact that I can't do everything from day one is enticing. If I could, what reason would I really have had to purchase this game other than to get a free hunk of plastic that resembles a miniature steering wheel? Then again, the ostensible depth seems more than a bit artificial given the issues the game has with CPU AI insanity. Maybe I'm just belaboring the casualfags argument. It's going to take some work to get fully accustomed to the new drifting system. Personally, I'm glad that they've removed the ability to powerslide/drift your way into snaking, but my initial thoughts on the new system generally involve use of the adjectives "lumbering" and "geriatric" and the phrase "like your car is the size of a bus." I'm optimistic that my feelings toward this will change over time, as I remember that similar thoughts were eventually alleviated after I initially played MKDD on the Gamecube. It's interesting, though--despite the lack of snaking, MKW feels very much like MKDS did with respect to drifting. Yes, there are sixteen new courses to choose from in MKW, and I do like a good number of the new ones. At first, I was adamant that Toad Factory was the most horrible thing to happen to the game. Eventually, I got used to the thing, but I am generally shocked by the number of course hazards that are on each course. Indeed, this challenges players to pay attention to what they're doing; however, it seems to go against Nintendo's beloved make-it-easier-for-beginners-to-play policy. Yes, you'll generally get used to the hazards if you play courses enough, but the initial frustration of not noticing a hazard until it's impossible to avoid might be a big turn-off for some people. I can't really reach a decision regarding hazards. On the one hand, I've found myself murmuring curses at the game when I accidentally ran into a retractable piranha plant, for example; but I know that I will be able to avoid it better if I keep playing the course. Consequently, I begin to think there is even more credence to the notion that difficulty is perhaps dynamically enhanced in order to artificially lengthen gameplay. Some course hazards require pure luck to avoid, creating an issue with the idea that players will eventually learn to avoid all the hazards. Take, for example, the Shy Guys skating (or whatever it is they're doing) on DK Summit. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to figure out exactly where they're going to be when you're attempting to avoid the deeper snow in that area. There are too many times that I have gone up the halfpipe on the right side of that section--near the second section of deeper snow--only to fall directly on top of a Shy Guy. This is less of a problem for me in 50cc, because I'm generally far enough ahead of the competition that my position isn't contested. In 100cc, however, this is a bigger issue, as the races are generally a lot tighter than in 50cc. I can only imagine 150cc might make those random hazards even more irksome. That being said, I've managed to get at least one-star rank on all of 50cc; I have all but three cups in 50cc two-star'd. I've hardly played any of 100cc, but I have a one-star rank on the two cups I've completed on that difficulty level/engine size. Controlling with the Wii Wheel works amazingly well in comparison to other games, but I don't think that it's altogether possible to do spectacularly well with it; I switched to my Gamecube controller after about two or three GP cups with the Wii Wheel. Again, the wheel works great for standard playing (whatever that means), and I'm very glad they've improved control over Excite Truck, a game whose controls I always found to be slightly too touchy for me--a single minute gesture would often cause me to turn too far in one direction, and I would crash into a wall. Granted, as with most other things, I did become acquainted enough with the control in Excite Truck that I was able to race successfully, but I'm glad to see that the primary Wiimote-based control for MKW is easy to use from the outset, even if I don't actually use the thing anymore. Yes, yes, just as with Brawl, I've found myself using a controller for another system entirely, albeit the previous generation's Nintendo console. I'm glad they've provided the option for multiple control methods, particularly given this game's ridiculously wacky difficulty level both in the single and multi-player modes, but it will remain consistently hilarious that the control method that makes best use of the Wiimote as an exemplification of the activity of automobile operation is likely the one that I'll use least. Then again, I've been told you can get a golden Wii Wheel emblem if you play online long enough with the wheel/solo Wiimote. Still, the Wiimote was designed with the ostensible purpose of requiring players to recreate the motion of some activity to achieve some feat in a game, and it is continually proving itself somewhat useless at that purpose. I'm not saying "the Wii is doomed" or anything, but more and more often I am finding that the controller made for the thing probably isn't the best choice or only provides marginal improvements over a more traditional controller. But, hey, I guess the appeal of the Wii is in its universality; maybe the ability for anyone to pick up a game and play it is the direction things should be going in. If that's the case, Nintendo ought to better configure the controls for the Wiimote in order that all players are encouraged to use them over other possible implements. As it stands, the only thing I'd consider using a solo Wiimote for in MKW is performing tricks easier. I do like MKW a lot, don't get me wrong, but I realize it's got flaws that seem to be increasingly consistent among first party Nintendo games. At the same time, I don't think that their newfound desire to appeal to more casual players is entirely a bad thing. I just wish there would be a better middle ground. In any case, I'm probably going to be playing MKW for quite some time to come. I'll put my FC on the wiki later. |
I only got as far as a star on the first cup in the new courses in 50cc.
|

And hopefully I can post my FC later tonight! :) |

I've heard that star rankings are more dependent on how well you avoided course hazards in the like, as is perhaps evidenced by the fact that I've gotten a few star rankings after coming in 2nd place on one or more of a GP cup's races. GOD, NINTENDO, PUBLISH SOME CRITERIA....

Ranking is based on (unofficially, but generally proven through numerous tests):
Additions Power Boost at start of race How long are you in 1st place? What is your time compared to the Preset time (the time Nintendo feels it should take to beat on average)? Mini-Turbos Tricks Successful hits with Items Subtractions How long are you off track (dirt roads and such)? Crashing into Walls Crashing into Hazards Falling off the Course For * * *, you are only allowed to hit the wall twice, and you cannot fall off. Falling off is the equivalent of hitting a wall 3 times. Someone said you were forced to finish 1st all the time and thus have 60 points but it is not true. Finishing place only has a minor effect on it, it's the performance during the race itself that counts. The subtractions take off more than all of the additions put together, so on average player is only allowed to crash into the wall twice. I suppose someone who knows the courses better (especially the ones you can "Snake" on) can take a few more hits. |
I'll eventually get this game but I already know what is still the greatest in the franchise.
|
KART TIME, FAGGOTS. I'm hopping on with Turnip and Tritoch right now. I've added everyone whose number is in the wiki, add me and join in if you can.
|
Here's my FC:
2191-8071-2297 (BigCN401) I'll go add it to the wiki page and add everybody FC too. :) |

SD and I played this together and I must say its quite a blast! :) He's trying to get a hang of the wii wheel controller while I was just bumrushing him with my gamecube controller. xD He opted to get a cart with better handling and still have a bit of problems although he's doing better (finishing earlier).
What controller do you guys use so far? I like my GC controller so far (now that it obviously got me to finishes and etc). |
I've added you all. But my intranets are capped at the moment (LOL AUSTRALIA), so it's like playing online with half a 33k modem coated with shit in outta space until the start of next month.
Which is two days away I think! :wind: |
Yo, did I miss the party? Just got Mario Kart earlier today and after trying out the wheel I have to say. I am terrible with it! Maybe I just need to keep using it but for now I'm sticking with the wavebird for online play.
I'm already beating a couple staff ghosts too =D Well I'll add everyone I see here and in the gfwiki page. Also added mine to that page so feel free to add me. FC: 4425-1917-5386 (Kairyu) |
The expert ghosts? Cause damn.
|
Baww no. I'm not that good yet! I did however "unlock" a few of the expert ghosts. So I'll try to beat them eventually.
|
Here's my code. 2964-8992-3275
|
Can someone add my code on Wiki? I lost my password and it seems registration is closed.
0645-6227-6107 |
I added Grawl and myself to the wiki.
Thankfully, I'm starting to get used to this game, I think. I've got most of 100cc double-starred right now, so hopefully 150cc won't be too spirit-crushing. Watching staff ghosts has been inspiring, I guess. |
Online is fantastic! Fuck grandprix mode.
MrMonkyMan - 0688-5725-5947 Add me so we can have sexy fun together! I've added every code I could find. |
So has anyone unlocked everyone yet?
All I got are the Mii, Rosalina, and Dry Bones. |
I can probably do all the unlocking except for anything requiring to unlock a staff ghost.
I'm not used to the courses yet. That said... I'm pretty much done with unlocking (except for anything requiring a staff ghost) :p |
I've added everybody who posted the FC so far.
I meet up and play with MrMonkeyMan a few moments ago... Pushing me off course while in the air HOW DARE YOU! :tpg: |
I'm just not a nice guy.
|
I've added myself to the wiki page (man, Saka did my job :tpg:): 4339-2971-0004. Like BRAWL, I've added everyone on the list and will continue to for a month. After that, you get baleted.
I'll be playing locally for a while first, but I must say that I'm lovin' the Wheel. It's all about the wheel. |
Just added everyone on the Wiki to my list. Hoping to face some of you sometime. :3:
|
So now that I've had time to play with different control types, I'm pretty much done with the wheel. The Wii Remote + Nunchuck combo is pretty much perfect as far as control and control scheme goes.
Edit: Ahaha, I don't know whose idea this "trick" system belongs to, but they rock. Not only do I get to race as Yoshi (king of MARIO KART, everyone else is gay), but I get to watch him do a barrel roll and jump over the car while he's doing it. That's pretty damn funny to me. <3 Yoshi. |
Just picked this up today, and... Well, I've only done Mushroom Cup on 50cc, but I'm having fun with it so far. My FC this time around is... 0430-8793-6958. Will add the FCs on the Wiki too.
|
I'm probably going to end up getting this game on the weekend.
Also, do you people tend to use the Wii Wheel more or the Gamecube Controller? |
Fuck. My brother and I was enjoying a nice worldwide race with MrMonkeyMan and Tails a few moments ago until NWFC decided to kick us off. Now when I try to connect again it gives an error saying their "servers may be trying to handle an unusually high amount of traffic". -_-;
|
Yeah, it kicked everyone off. Tails is surprisingly more female and hot than I imagined.
|
Yeah, I'm secretly Nanoha.
I really need to study up on these tracks. Outside of DK and the Waterway one it was my first time on the tracks. Good stuff. Like I mentioned in chat though, the poor release time alongside GTA IV means I won't really be on a lot, aside from a few appearances here and there. |
Been a while since I played a game that actually made me frustrated. Mario Kart Wii has something special going on for it.
I guess my frustrations could be lessened if I just stopped using the Wheel, but since the game came packaged with it I feel inclined to use the friggin' thing for a while, at least until I beat a couple more GPs. Unfortunately, controlling a bike with the wheel can be pretty nuts, even more if you're constantly doing tricks. The game manuals says you only need to tilt the wheel up to do a trick, but it's more like you have to violently jerk the thing to get it to register, which in turn affects the bike's sensitive steering. Blurgh. Haven't played online at all, but I'll check it out more when I manage to clear more GPs (or when I snap the wheel in half). |
I stuck the Wiimote into the Wheel, and just 'felt' around the controls before even turning the system on... And promptly popped it back out and used the Nunchuk configuration. The Wheel feels decent enough, but I don't really like the idea of turning the Wheel/Wiimote and jerking it around to steer. I didn't enjoy it in Excite Truck, anyway.
I've completed the four 'new' cups on 50cc, and I have to say, I'm really loving some of the new stages. I think the Waterway one is my favourite. So far, all I've unlocked is a heavy cart, and King Boo. Gotta get more! |
I never bothered with the wheel, also because you can't do manual steering with it, which sucks when you want to play the 150cc GPs or online against some decent folk.
I didn't do either of that, but I still use the Wiimote + Nunchuk because it feels like I'm actually in control (I always found the motion detection dodgy to begin with) and I don't want to switch back to a Gamecube controller, because this is on the Wii. Unlocking Rosaline takes ages for me. I beat Super Mario Galaxy for ages (NTSC version though, but the save should recognised on my PAL console, right? RIGHT? ;___; *) and I did most of the 50CC GPs in either B or two stars (yes, I vary like that). Online play has been really pleasant for me. I miss chatting (read: dissing, lolling, complaining) or any actual interaction with the other players next to bumping them off the road, but it's nice to stick with pretty much the same team when you start an online match. I do miss an option to do complete GPs in order instead of random tracks. Or creating your own tournaments etc. etc. A level designer would have been a motherfucking awesome addition. Single-player is kinda dull, really. It's not the skill that's tested, but my patience. This also goes for on-line mode, actually. Thunder, blue shell, POW-block, blue shell... and at that time I'm fucking 7th. Or in that mushroom-cave-track thing getting a thunder stroke above you at the jumping section is just plain frustrating, since you'll fall in. Then again, getting back to the first place is getting a hell easier with those items, mainly with Bullet Bill. What am I saying? It's unbalanced like nothing else before. Add this to the online-mode; I want to fucking customize the weapons. No more * Come to think of it, I could just download a PAL save for Super Mario Galaxy. I don't really care about the savegame anymore anyway. |
Yeah, you need your region save data of SMG to unlock Rosaline for MKWii. When I was playing the PAL version it didn't unlock her. When I put in my US copy she was unlocked right from the start.
Oh, I think I need to add a couple of more FC. I couldn't add them because NWFC keep kicking me out throughout today. |
Quote:
I ended up unlocking Funky last night, so I gotta try him. Daisy is next on my list. |
Aw yeah, time to be a slowpoke again, but you can install the Mario Kart Channel thing to your Wii Menu to allow you to see who is on without actually loading up the game. At least its a step in the right direction. If I randomly jump into your matches (SUP INFERNAL ='D), that's the reason.
|
<3 <3
I only just found out about that myself yesterday. :( Quote:
|
I'm probably not gonna use him. I was just testing to see if his voice was just as insane as DK's.
It's somewhere along the lines, but definitely not as funny as DK. |
I don't know, Funky Kong sounds even more hilarious than DK when taking a beating. But that's just me!
Quote:
Quote:
Oh yeah. I'm surprised Toadette is in Mario Kart again. I thought I would never hear her mad cackling voice ever again :tpg: Also, when are you guys on? This weekend? We need to get some races and battles going :U |
Quote:
He sounded so cheerful back in Mario Kart 64. :( |
10 years can do that to video game characters.
I haven't used Toad often enough to notice. But if that's true I wonder if that is a good thing. I mean, he was damn loud and cheerfully annoying back in Mario Kart 64. |
Quote:
|
Aight motherfuckers, sound off. Kart racing tonight, 7-8 PM EST. Who is down.
|
Friends are gone for the weekend... So 70% chance I'll be on.
I really wanna face someone from here online anyway. :3: |
I'll most likely be available so sure, count me in! :)
|
If I'm home. I was planning on going out to dinner or something, seeing as it's Friday, and I usually don't get home until 7:30-8pm if I do that.
|
4 to 5 hours from now? That's a bit early for me but I'll try to make it. :tpg:
So did any of you try out the tournament track? I was halfway expecting more online player interaction. Not a modified GP time trail! |
Bleh, reading this thread really makes me want to buy this game asap. Darn me working tomorrow for 5.5 hours during the evening/night. I guess I'll use this as a chance to ask some noob questions.
Do characters still have those special items? Such as DK having a large banana or Peach having those hearts? Please say yes. >_<;; |
I've added everyone on the list, so please add me back if you haven't (0645-6227-6107).
Also, did Nintendo edit online play? I played 10 matches and not a single blue shell hit me, allowing me to come in first every single time (1000 points holla). Quote:
|
Ahahaha, I FELL ASLEEP. Anyways, I'm in a lobby now. MrMonkeyMan is on. Join up!
|
Quote:
(Also I'll add friend codes at that time) |
Well, I totally missed racing tonight. I was out. :><:
I'll be on in the next 10-20 minutes, if anyone wants to race then, I'm game. |
Same here, I just got home not more than 20 minutes ago ._.
I'll be online in a bit! edit: In 10 minutes, that is. |
Seems like people can't register for the wiki anymore. Can someone do me a solid and add my code to it? My code is 4382-2374-3981, and my mii's name is Max Biggs. I was just playing with my friends twenty minutes ago fine, but I can't seem to connect now, so I'll have to wait on playing you guys. =/
|
If you guys are still on I'll join. :)
And I'll add you Max Biggs, both wiki and game. |
Gah. Kai, have I ever mentioned I hate Rainbow Road? Not that I can't race on it or anything, rather, it's a bitch to stay on in this one. >_<
THE RANDOMIZER FUCKING HATES ME. |
Okay, so now we know if there's three people in a room and the host choose to play battle, one person is going to get screwed aka no CPU. lol x_x
Geez Kairyu, either you're really good or I'm just terrible tonight. I guess I cannot sit at the computer while playing at the same time. lol Anyway we should all REALLY set up a time so we can have more than 3-5 player online. The game isn't fun without MOAR people throwing items at each other. :tpg: |
Yeah. Ever heard of that line, anything that could go wrong can and will go wrong? Totally me tonight.
Hit boxes, walls, fell off the stage. I DON'T NORMALLY DO THAT KIND OF THING. :gonk: I need to unlock more characters also. ;_; Anyone up for a Mario Kart Grand Prix some time in the future? |
Quote:
Frankly, I love Rainbow Road. It's one of the few courses where items can't touch me. Not even the CPUs can touch me! Quote:
I dunno, I've been told I'm pretty insane at Mario Kart games so I'd say we're all damn good. Hell, you guys totally floored me on the last stretch of races! I just have a way of not getting item whored :tpg:. |
Quote:

Quote:
Against friends? The best we can do is have everyone agree to pick the tracks in order. I wouldn't mind doing that. |
So I've been told that if you have a friend facing randoms, either regional or worldwide, you can join them via your friend and race with a bunch of people. Can anyone confirm this? That'd be pretty cool, because while I like racing with friends, it's usually just three or four of us. To potentially have a group of friends (four or so) to join an even larger group would certainly make things more fun.
|
If you go online and any of your friends are also online the game will let you know about it and you can go and attempt to join them. Doesn't always work, the game could be full or something.
The game will also let you know between races if any of your friends are online. |
Great races BigCN and Grawl =D
I guess we can meet up and race together in regional and worldwide modes after all! Also, BigCN, is Moonview Highway your favorite track? I don't think I've seen you pick anything else the entire time! |

Just got it today and completed 4 50cc matches and a few online battles. I've only played 3 online matches, and lost two of them (One of them was 2v1, and I was that one), and I must say that they do a much better job in online play than Brawl did. It's also fun to see Mii's you've created hanging out in various stages.
I'll probably post my Friend Code up once I unlock a few more things. I still never checked to see what it was. Also I didn't try it out yet, but is the Worldwide connection any good, like when you're racing people from Japan or something? |
Yeah. It's perfect. This online works amazingly.
The Japanese are brutal in this game. ;_; |
Quote:
I wanted to stick around for another hour but I have to cook something eventually! Quote:
Far as I could tell I didn't see any difference in gameplay between Friends, Regional and Worldwide racing. @Chaotic lawl, damn Japanese and their 9000VR triple star rating :tpg: |
I know, right?! :tpg:
I decided to stick with Regional since people in the US are a hell of a lot easier to face! |
Quote:
Quote:
Oh! Don't forget the GOLD WII WHEEL! I'll never going to get that! :tpg: |
Quote:
Hah, that'd be hilarious having a triple star and a golden wheel next to your name xD. But I do wonder, would they both appear next to each other? |
Quote:
|
There's nothing special about getting the golden wheel. I got it after 3 or 4 races on WFC (my wheel usage offline is 100%), and it's not like I'm good at the game or anything... Anyone can get the wheel after enough time, which kind of dilutes the specialness.
Sitting at a very average 5300 or so VR right now. WFC is pretty fun since there really is a wide range of skill, easily displayed on a course like Rainbow Road where more than 30 seconds can pass after the 1st place racer finishes (thus ending the race prematurely). |
Alright, my Friend Code is: 2964-9203-5872 (Sacred)
If someone can add my FC to the Wiki, that would be great. So far I've added: BigCN Grawl Infernal Monkey Kairyu MrMonkeyMan Chaotic Saka I would add everyone, but the Wii is in a different room than my computer, so I just decided to add everyone who posted recently. I will admit, I'm no pro at this. My confidense isn't as high as it is in Brawl. I've only completed a few 50cc courses with Gold Trophies, though only one star, one A, and two Cs. I have a feeling I'm never going to get Dry Bowser. I should probably complete a few more of those default races before ruining my VR, even though both remain over 5000. But anyway, yeah. Add me. |
Added, done and now joining you in regional VS race. XD
|
Picked up this up on friday night and man it is a BLAST.
I've posted my code on the wiki and will be adding everyone shortly. Hope to play with some of ya'll soon. |
I've updated my friend roster and added Ronz and Sacred X.
I'm going to be online in VS Regional in another an hour so if anyone wants to join, just go right ahead! |
Maaaan, you all are having fun without me :(
Just for your information, I am getting the game, but that won't be until probably next week. Catch ya around ^_^ |
I got tired of the laggy mess in SSBB so I decided to switch it up and play some MKWii :tpg:.
Well you know where to find everyone's FCs so we'll see you there~ next week! |
Is anyone still on? If possible, I'll be on around 9:30-9:45 ESTish.
|
*looks at time* I'll be on... in about 5-10 minutes. lol
In my Wii Message board all you see is "Mario Kart Wii" and "Smash Bros. Brawl" listed one after another with a total time of 10 hours. Geez I play ALOT on Sunday. :tpg: |
Did you ever sign on Chaotic? You don't seem to be on my Friends list yet.
Also just raced a few with BigCN and Kairyu. It seems every time a race is over, they're in the top two. As for my last race, I'm still wondering how I was in 1st place for two laps, got hit two-thirds into the 3rd lap, and ended up in tenth place. Gah. That seems to happen a lot though, one hit causes me to fall back 6+ places for a while. Was fun either way. I totally love how much easier and overall better the online is for MKWII opposed to Brawl. EDIT: By the way, what karts does everyone use? I haven't gotton the feel for the cycle yet. Although, I still use a basic kart for Wario. Then again I still have a few 50cc races to get through. Never even touched 100cc yet. |
I wasn't connection for some reason. :(
I have to study for Finals in a little while, so I'm probably not gonna be able to get on tonight anyway. |
Ah BigCN finally owned me in Moonview Highway! Incidentally, I got disconnected at the same time ;_;. I guess it's bound to happen eventually. Epic races though!
Especially that last stretch in Mario Circuit 3, the Wheelie triumphs again! Quote:
As for karts and bikes~ I prefer using the standard bike (light or heavy weight.) It gives me a good balance in drifting, speed and handling so I can race in any track without a problem. If I was like one of the more hardcore players I'd probably learn to use the Sneakster or Flame Flyer for their huge top speed advantage. |
LOL. I thought you "left" because I got first place and pissed you off. :tpg:
At other times, whenever I race against you in Moonview Highway I'm always getting hit by cars, trucks and stupid bomb-on-wheel-that-shouldn't-be-on-the-road-anyway-but-hey-it's-mario-kart! It's like you curse/jinx me on that track. lol As for what kart (or bike) I use, it's Yoshi and the standard kart. But I'm "experimenting" with other characters and karts/bikes too like Baby Daisy with the Blue Falcon. >_> |
Quote:
Spoiler:
And so all of the dinosaurs in the land died. Cheers to Nintendo for incorporating a subtle albeit extremely retarded history lesson in our gamez. |
I may be joining the rest of of you Mario Kart-ers, because I've been looking to pick this game soon.
|
Quote:
But yeah, I noticed that 90% of the races we do in Moonview Highway EVERYONE behind me is pretty much guaranteed to hit a car or bomb. You do realize the safest spot in that track is the center white line, right? RIGHT?! Too bad it can't protect us against banana peels, fake item boxes and various colored shells ._. |
Question about getting stars next to your name:
I know to get one, you need to get that star number on every cup, but does that include all modes? Or any mode? Or 150cc? Or...what? |
Quote:

Quote:
But people are mean and WILL start bumping into you to go into incoming traffic, especially heavy kart/bike player. @_@ Quote:
EDIT: Geez I'm one minute too late. You can't win at everything Kairyu! ;p ADDITIONAL SPAM: Heh, MrMonkeyMan, a couple of people from #PocketMonster and my brother and I had a Friend VS race and Battle. Good thing VR isn't counted or else I'll loose so much. lol Too bad the disconnection screw up the game twice. I was having so much fun. |

Quote:
And why is BigCN401 the only person who's ever online? I demand that more of you get on there and play  |
It's Monday and I'm not home :U
I'm usually available to play in the afternoon to evening hours. And so you know, I'm in that crazy ass twilight Hawaiian timezone. Though on Fridays and weekends I tend to be on throughout the day, if I'm not too busy. |
Had some matches with MrMonkeyMan earlier today, and I was online quite a bit. My VR finally reached over 6000, and I got in first plenty of times in a row. Then again, I recently started using bikes, and those things are so freaking fast.
Question: Precisely what do wheelies do? They seem to make you go faster. They also seem to cause you to only spin once on POW blocks. Is there any reason someone wouldn't use this all of the time except when in very curvey areas? Lastly, I'm pretty sure there are 4 tricks each person can perform, one for each button on the directional pad. Do these all give the same speed boosts and only differ in looks or what? |
You're thinking far too much into it. Wheelies only give you speed, but they you leave you open to a much greater speed loss if you're hit by another racer or item. I'm not sure about the Pow block thing though.
Tricks have the same effect no matter what trick it is, they send you higher up in the air than you would normally travel and give you a boost after you hit the ground. |
Quote:
Go-Karts + Overall heavier weight class and therefor better stability. + Stronger mini-boost (can use red sparks.) + Overall top speed is better. Bikes + Can do Wheelies~ You get extra speed at the expense of next to no steering while doing so. + Handling is far better. I also hear using a the Wii Wheel with automatic bikes is especially beneficial/fun. + Overall smaller size. Again, less mass also means you can get pushed around a bit more. Also, about the tricks. There isn't any real difference between the four each character can do. It's not like SSX where each trick provides a certain benefit or landing technique. And I think either vehicle can do the "one spinout" move versus a POW block. If you time the trick button correctly. Though I never tested it on a Kart yet. |
The "one spinout" thing works with Go-Karts also. Racing 50cc, those computers will actually attempt to stop you, so it does work with it.
|
6666 VC and 5770 BR. I love my VC and wish it would never change, maybe to 7777. I also played a few worldwide races, and gosh I hate Mirror Mode despite not even have unlocked it.
I was also in a 2v1 Coin Match earlier, and I was the one solo. I thought I was going to lose for sure, but not only did I win, I got nearly 10x their score. I had about 24 coins or so and they only had about 3 or so in the end. I'm not sure how that happend. A similar situation happend before that, with them gaining 15 and me having 2X. Not bad. |
Fuck. I'm getting bad luck in MKWii online today. Not only I get screwed/loosing point just for being 3rd place and under but I keep getting disconnection (which Nintendo will penalized you EVEN WHEN THE DISCONNECTION IS NWFC FAULT!). My VR drop down from 8600ish to 7600ish within a HOUR!
I'm going to remind myself NOT to play on a Tuesday. ;_; |
Ouch. I saw the -232 (or so) earlier, but I think you were still above 8000. Want to practice in a buddy room or something?
|
It's better to just completely ignore your points~ They're pointless (apparently they're supposed to match you up with players that have roughly the same amount but this never works) so don't let them frustrate you. You eventually get to the stage where a massive chunk are taken off even if you come forth in a twelve player race. :cmb:
|

So, I have 100% wheel usage offline and online, and have been playing offline and online for a while now (although I haven't extensively done time trials). However, I still have a white wheel next to my name online, while my friend who hasn't been playing nearly as long as me has a gold wheel. Does anyone know if there's a trick to getting the gold wheel? |
Oh, so it's all about avoiding the ground and jumping at the right time... Gotta try that.
|
I BLOODY GOT THE GAME TODAY!!!!!! Now I won't feel left out!! I hope the game doesn't put an end to future Brawl sessions though. I'll be online this weekend!!
Oh, and I also got Okami, but that's another story. |
Hey, Sacred, did you get to see me drive right through the jump on Mushroom Gorge? Haha, that was pretty lame.
|
Lol, they were some pretty fun matches. I always found it hilarious how you wait at the finish line while waiting for others to catch up as a taunt, then pass it when they get close.

Freelance: wots ur fiend cooode? =o I should hopefully be on for a fair chunk of time tomorrow, so see some of you suckers there I guess. :3: |
Also, good luck trying to do that with a wheel. If your arms are not completely parallel to the ground, you'll end up hopping into a drift, ramming into a wall and destroying your ranking along with your self-esteem.
|
Oh hay internet! I added myself to the GFWiki, but here's my friend code for the lazy:
3609-1726-6516 I added everybody who was already listed. I must say that I LOVE the retro track selection, especially the Ghost Valley and Waluigi Stadium tracks. |
I'll add you right now, Crisis.
I'm also still awaiting confirmation from: Grawl Infernal Monkey Chaotic Sakabadger Also if anyone added me but hasn't received confirmation, just make a note of it and I'll check it out. |
Alert the internet. Ronz and I are hopping on for a bit. Join in!
|
@Sacred X and whoever else: Really kind of busy this week with some projects, but I'll try to get everyone else added by the end of the weekend so you aren't faced with a permanent "?" on your FC list.
|
I got my Friend Code!! It's 3866 8712 1330!
I played online with random people in my region and wound up in 7th place. Not bad for someone who hasn't played yet, eh? XD So I guess you can't make make up a name for your online profile? You have to use whatever the name of the Mii you chose is? I chose Link when I connected just to test out multiplayer but I don't want to choose him permanently. I noticed that in 2 matches I would suddenly get 'disconnected from the other players.' Is that the result of my pressing a button I shouldn't, or is it a problem with the online? I'll be playing this weekend! I'll add everyone at that time too. P.S. I played on a track called...Moonview Highway...it was pretty darn cool! I was about to go into a city when I got disconnected :( |
Holy crap, Icy and Mr.MonkeyMan are bullies in Mario Kart :tpg:.
I lost count the amount of times I was ran over or pushed off a cliff in a neck-to-neck race! Still, I had a great time. Looking forward to the next race! Quote:
You got disconnected that many times? Ouch, not sure what to say to that. I only got disconnected once out of who knows how many matches. Then again I'm also on a wired connection. Assuming you're using a wireless connection, have you tried switching channels in your router? |
I assumed that whatever worked for Brawl would work with MK too. What channel would you recommend I switch to?
|
For Wii, it's generally channel 1 or 11.
|
Yeah, normally I just go from one end of the spectrum to the other if I'm getting connection issues like that. It's possible someone's wavebird controller or wireless phone is interfering with your connection.
|

However, you weren't kidding when you were bragging about your skills though! Seriously, there were quite a few races where I couldn't even catch up to you because you were so far ahead. However, that's not going to stop me from challenging you in future games! I love a good challenge. There was a particularly close race between you, nutty, MrMonkeyMan, some random guy on WiFi, and me on Coconut Mall though. There were Bullet Bills, Stars, and Giant Mushrooms everywhere! Places were exchanged instantaneously! Good games to everyone I faced today. |
I was also surprized at how well you were doing so quickly. You seemed to get in first in nearly every match, or at least do really well. I usually wondered why you were catching up so fast when we were both the same character, but then I realized you were usinga different bike than me, since I still use the standard bike.
I should be on tomorrow around after 9pm, so hopefully I can join a race with some of you guys again. |

Okay I was using channel 11 before so I changed it to 1. Hope that works. I can't wait 'til the weekend so I can play with all of you, and I still got Okami to try out too. So much fun!
|
Finally back home with my Wii and of course, I grabbed a copy of Mario Kart Wii. Please add, I will do the responsible thing and add/PM peoples on the board.
1246-9426-9528 |
Well this sucks. I changed my router channel to 1 and tested the online today and it's even worse than before! I can't even start a match now without that 'you have been disconnected from the other players' popping up in my face. Seems to me that SSBB is more stable than MK from what I'm experiencing so far. I guess I'll switch it back to channel 11. At least I could actually play some matches.
By the way, if anyone has already added my friend code, please delete it from your roster. I don't want to use a non-original Mii for my online avatar. All the random people I see all have original ones, and I didn't know (at that time) that you couldn't change your name or anything. I'll have to make a new Mii and get a new FC. Thank you. |
AFAIK you can simply edit the Mii on your existing license. When I first started, I used my (meaning my real name and all that) Mii on the license. Decided I'd rather have a net-friendly Mii name show up, so I simply changed the Mii I was using in the license setting.
It's pretty dumb you can't just edit the name on your license, especially given how Nintendo is all WATCH OUT FOR ONLINE SECURITY. But still, you shouldn't need to do anything as drastic as recreating the whole thing. |
I didn't see any option to edit the Mii, at least not at the places I checked! Where do I go to do so? Yeah that would be more preferable to deleting everything altogether.

Oh, I added everybody FC that posted or PMed so my Friend List is full (only 30 per license! lame). |
Hay, it's the weekend, who's gonna be on?
I'll probably be on around 10 PM EST tonight, just so I have a reason to get my lazy ass up and play a different game. ;_; |
Should be on for some Mario Kart goodness on and off tonight. Still trying to unlock everything, but at least my Baby Mario/Bullet Bike combo is ready to go from the beginning.
|
I still have two 100cc cups to go and all 150cc cups. I'm probably going to aim for getting at least a star in all cups since I seem to have a ton of stars and double stars, though I remember in other games 150cc being annoyingly difficult. Hopefully I can pull it off.
EDIT: I recently made 7000+ VR, I think I made it up to around 7200, but then I quickly dropped down to about 6900. Icy and BigCN are always getting 1st and 2nd, gah. I may start using a new bike to see how it works out. Is there anyone who wants to race in a friend room, which doesn't effect VR later tonight? I still haven't tried it out, and it may be fun depending on how many people we get to join. |

Hey, I have a quick question guys. I've added about five roster pages worth of buddies so far, but only five people from GFF have actually been confirmed. Of course, the most obvious answer is that these people have yet to confirm me, but does anyone know if the buddy system is like Brawl, where even after both people confirmed each other, they have to be online at the same time in order to be added to each other's rosters?
|
Yeah, it's like Brawl. I added the entire wiki a few nights ago and only maybe 6 people are confirmed. At least there's less lag than Brawl and a meeting room, but it would be nice to be able to actually type things to friends instead of being limited to "GO BLUE TEAM!"

I just tried to log onto WiFi multiple times, but it won't let me connect. Hopefully this problem will be fixed before 10pm. Then again, it's my little brother's Birthday and he might be playing it then. Despite the game being mine, the Wii is him, and it's his birthday. Bleh, we'll see what happens.
|
Just found out about the Worldwide tournament going on right now (I've been out of the Mario Kart news)...I guess I like the fact that it is GP style since you can get items to help your time (i.e. you can't completely skill your way to the best score like in TT) but it is really damn annoying when those blue shells/lightning/POWs come your way when you're trying to finish that perfect race =/
In any case, I don't know if anyone else had a chance to try their hand at the tourney, but it apparently ends today (5/9). A good warmup to some Wifi fun tonight hopefully. EDIT: Also, the tourney race right after I posted this, a blue shell came at me and I somehow managed to mushroom away from it O_O I thought that was the stuff of Youtube videos only. Too bad no one will believe me =/ But the rest of the race was a wash and I had to restart...bah! |
Currently trying out Tournament Mode. I'm wondering how some of you guys, or especially the top ten got their records. The only thing I can possibly think of is people trying over and over to get the three mushrooms, using that shortcut each time, and never getting hit by a POW block, lightning, or Blue shell. I can't possibly see how staying in 1st the entire match will result in a good record, or even doing all of those requirements.
I also suck at the ghost trial thing. I think I accidently sent Kairyu a ghost while trying to get one for myself. |
Yo, I won't be able to make it on until about 10:30 PM EST tonight. Waiting for a friend who's coming back from college. I plan to chill with her, but I'm gonna bring my Wii also. I just need some transportation time and some time to set up.
|
Well hopefully you'll come on sooner before everybody start getting tired and leave. :p
|
Rollins and I just started a room. Hopefully people will come.
|
Ugh... My internet is totally crapping out on me. Sorry guys, I can't maintain a connection long enough to stay on. I gotta fix it up. ;_;
I feel bad about asking everyone to race and I can't even get on myself. Hopefully, I could get this working a lot better tomorrow. |
I like how I got home after everyone is done playing Mario Kart. Anyway, if anyone is up for some racing I will be online within the next 20 minutes!
|
I'm still on and room is open so join in NAO! XD
|
Well that sucked. I kept getting up in last place. I'm a total newbie. I quit to play Okami since I wasn't getting any better.
|
Wow, so much fun tonight. Too bad you couldn't join Chaotic. Lots of people showed up... to bad it wasn't all at once! 7 people was great and perhaps next time we can pass it and fill up the whole room. :)
|
Quote:
I'll probably move my Wii down to my room just so I could get online. Until next time. |
Quote:
At least we got one good series of races. I still can't believe I fell off that many times in Ghost Valley =p |
Mehhh stupid tournament. I can usually get through Mario Circuit in 1:42-1:47ish and that's with one spinout and no mushrooms (I uh...hit the chain chomp and lost the three you usually get in Time Trial/Ghost) and just boosting/doing wheelies everywhere. But I do the exact same thing on the tournament version without even getting hit by anything at all and the best I can manage is 1:53. I don't get what makes that difference. I was trying to beat my friend's rank of 1:47, nothing I do seems to work. Too late now since it's over but that annoyed me.
|
Quote:
One time I actually got 3 mushrooms, ran two laps without ANYTHING happening to me and then got raped with a blue shell, followed by two red shells. To add insult to injury I also got Lightning Bolted right before the last turn. What could've been a time of 1:39 turned into 2:00 or so *cries* |
Shit the cc level is probably it. Seems so obvious now. It's been irritating me the past 3 days. But the items are a bitch, too...the few "perfect" runs I did were sprinkled between 20 or 30 tries where a lightning bolt or blue shell just screwed me hugely. CPU is so mean :(
Oh yeah, I know I don't really know anyone here but if you happen to see someone named "kuppy" online racing (or even on SSBB) it's me. My code is 2879 0034 7832. I've only really played Worldwide VS, I have yet to try Battle. I'm trying to get two stars in every cup since three stars is basically impossible for me right now. I did managed to get two three star 50cc retro cups at least..I think it was banana and lightning. Whichever one had N64 Bowser's Castle, that's my favorite course ever...mostly for the music. |
Got hit by my own red shell the other day on 150cc. When the player in first was clearly in front of me.
Ugh. SUICIDE BY RED SHELL I DO NOT WANT, DONKEY KONG. I KNOW YOU SUCK BUT GOD DAMN |
HIIIIIIII...
I played some single-player today and unlocked two characters and some bikes. All that playing improved my skills somewhat...although the AI don't pose much of a challenge. I've gotten the Gold in all classes so far. As for the Time Trials, in order to unlock things, do you need to beat the ghost? Even when I don't beat the ghost, I still get a "NEW RECORD!" I wish Brawl had 2 player random online like MK has. Now my sister and I can play online without waiting for friends. By the way, I switched to Channel 9 on my router and it's far more stable than 1 and 11 so far. I played quite a few matches before I even got a disconnect error. |
Quote:
I believe it's just saying you got a new record because it's looking at your own times, so if it's the first time you're playing a course, of course you'll get a new record. But, even if you lose to the ghost... Spoiler:
|
Ah cool. Thanks for the info.
P.S. Anyone wanna play a bit later? I'm having chicken soup now, but I should be finished soon. |
I can join in a bit... but what's your FC again? I deleted your FC by mistake and you deleted your FC on the wiki page. XD;
|
My FC is on the 8th page, but I'll be nice and repost it. It's 3866 8712 1330.
By the way, I added everyone on Wiki so like, you guys add me too, just 'cause. BTW, what's your definition of 'a bit.' |
Well I had to do something and I'm trying to get other people to play too.
Anyway, I'm starting up the game now and going to enter your FC again. lol EDIT I have a room open right now. I'm not starting yet so join in if you want to play. :) |

Is it just me, or is unlocking stuff in this game a total chore?
In SSBB, all you had to do was complete Subspace to unlock all but two people, and you could easily unlock characters just by playing matches too. In Mario Kart, you have to play through each course a total of four times!! One for each class and there's also the time trials. I only unlocked a few things so far and already I'm getting sick of these courses. It's a total bore-fest in my opinion. Also, I thought I could just stick a SMG save file on an SD card and xfer it to the Wii so I can unlock Roselina, but it doesn't work apparently. It just says ??? on the Wii menu when I check the SD card. Bah! |
T. Nantoka representing. Sousuke, I just wanna say. I saw you doing those tricks OFF of Rainbow Road. Laughing at you for the rest of my life. Good races though, seriously.
Also laughing at the guy whose name was SandNigger. What the fuck. Edit: AW SHIT my Mario Kart power level is over 6000. Am I a cool kid now. |

After messing around with MK, I came to the following conclusion: I prefer playing SSBB online than MK online, mainly 'cause of the gameplay. It's more fun than just steering a kart/bike around. That's not to say I hate MK though. It's still fun, although getting hit by items right after the other is annoying is heck.
Although MK's online is er, more advanced (dunno how else to describe it) than SSBB, there are some things I wish was included in it, such as the ability to have a second player join in any any time ala SSBB. If I am playing alone and my sister wants to play, I'd have to disconnect from WFC completely just to select 2p in the main menu. What sort of crummy system is that? I also wish you could make taunts too. That would make races a lot more fun. P.S. My sister and I thought up one syllable words (well mostly one syllable) to use when hit by items: bombed, shelled, banana'ed, lightning'ed, etc. |
I dunno what you guys are talking about... DK makes some fairly hilarious noises, but he pales, PALES in comparison to Waluigi, who remains the funniest-sounding character in the entire Nintendo population. DK sounds like he does in Jungle Beat, which is good since that's probably the best/funniest voice for him.
Also, I'm not having nearly as much trouble with 150cc as I thought I would. I read how it's completely unfair and absurdly challenging... Yeah, it's certainly a challenge, but that's good. It's far from unfair. People bitch about how easy the MK games are and they finally get a challenging entry in the series and then they bitch about how it's too challenging. O Internet U. |
150cc is a pain in the ass when you're trying to get a two or three star ranking but otherwise I think it's not too bad if you're just going for gold. Definitely not a cakewalk but not impossible. The only thing I hate is how the CPU just loves to totally fuck me over by sending one blue shell, two red shells in a row, one lightning bolt, and another blue shell if I manage to get back in first place all in the course of one or two laps. It's bad enough that after I get hit, everyone decides to just ram into me since I have a bike, so it's like getting hit with more items. Just aggravating, but I got my two stars so now I get to deal with Mirror.
|
So I tried online a bit earlier with my cousins, but we tried only two races and both races ended within 5 seconds and I was declared the winner. I'm assuming I was disconnected?
As for my opinions on Mario Kart: I find it pretty fun, but only with more people. I like the new tracks, but I think 12 karts is a bit too chaotic. What it really means for the guys up front is that A) Shitloads of people are bunched up right behind you (unless you are godly) and can overtake you easily with a single red shell or B) even if you are godly, there are more people who could screw you over, not to mention more screw-over items that affect more than one person (Lightning, Powblocks, Squids, and in this game, Bullet Bill, which is deadly considering how close together everybody is, and finally, of course, the Blue Shell.) I've seen myself get hit 5 times consecutively by so many items, usually starting with a random banana or fake box, followed up by a blue shell, then some red shells, and then a bullet bill for the icing on the cake. Also, for more people, I'm not sure if it's just me or if anybody else noticed, but 3 - 4 players is choppy as hell, even locally. It's definitely not running at full speed with that many people. I don't know, overall, it feels like an unfinished product that they rushed out the door to me. I think it probably would have been better to work on this a bit more, personally. But otherwise, solid game. I had fun playing it. I generally use either the GCN controller or the Wiimote+Nunchuck combination. They both work very well for me. As for Bikes vs. Karts, I generally like to go Bikes because I like the better handling on them. My character is usually Baby Peach, reason being that I like to piss everybody else in the room off with her voice. Fun times. I also use some of my random Miis occasionally. Seeing Miles Edgeworth in the middle of a race is funny. |

Kairyu and I plan on playing MKWii online later tonight if anybody is interested. We may do a GFF Grand Prix in a friends room if enough people want to!
|
Fun times online! Luckily the night was not a negative result for my WFC ranking, despite the countless number of red shells that seemed to be heading my way. I'm looking at you Identity Crisis! >_>
But seriously, we need to do more GFF Mario Kart action...summer is almost here! |
Me and my friend were on earlier! Except both Kai and Icy were both in Worldwide VS. Races. :(
I still need to add everyone... Haven't had the opportunity to yet. |
OK, that was the most fun I've had in a Mario Kart game in a long time. You guys are near impossible to beat now. Especially you, BigCN!
I gotta start improving my game! Or at least find a way to avoid Icy's army of red shells. Good times, good times =D |
LIES! You and ID (and my brother and my brother's friend) keep screwing me up and made my VR jump down from ~9400 to ~8500. :gonk:
Now I'm average like you guys. :tpg: But yeah, it was fun! I never play MKWii all the way to 4 AM! Now I need to pwn some n00bs so I can get my VR back to OVER 9000! :D |
Quote:
Ooooh that homebrew dealy sounds pretty rad! |
So, I would like to thank Kairyu and Icy for a great worldwide race tonight and raising my VR to OVER 9000 again! I mean, I couldn't gain it for the past couple of days and tonight you guys help me. :tpg:
BTW, was that Turbo? Because I never seen him on since the game launch and I had to delete his FC to make room for other. >_> |
You just had to jump in when me and Icy was tired from constant racing :tpg:.
Luckily I decided to cut my loses as I kept doing worse every race. I still came out with more than I started! Congrats on the "over 9000" though, enjoy it! At least until me and Icy recover and pull you back down to 8500VR. I have no idea if that was really Turbo, too. I'd like to say it was him, considering he stuck through nearly all the hardcore racing we did :3 |
So I played this game for 40 minutes at Best Buy during my lunch break. A tear rolled down my cheek and I realized what a fool I was to pass on buying this game. It was fun. ;___________;
So I immediately ask someone if I can buy a copy. They didn't have any. Ok, that's fine. I'll try another store. Next place I go to, nope... NONE! I figure I'll try back in Sacramento when I get off work. Surely the city would have plenty of copies. I make it back after work and try three different stores here. ALL SOLD OUT!. The Gamestop manager explained to me that the last time they received a shipment of the game was two weeks ago and it was only two copies. What the fuck is this shit? Honestly, two copies for an area with over a half a million population? Yeah! That's really great, Nintendo. Now you purposely gotta create shortages of your first party games too? So apparently I have to play the call game considering that none of these places have no idea when they'll get more copies in. They said they get a few in randomly randomly, and even then none have been coming in the last few weeks. The game has already been out for what, a month now? :psyduck: |
Yeah, weird how the console is easier to find than Mario Kart Wii nowadays. Well Amazon.com still seems to be keeping them in stock so you could get it from there. If you're tired of making shipment calls.
|
I'll take amazon.com and shove it down your throat. =p
I don't wanna wait for the shipping. Tomorrow during my work hours I will track down a copy of this game. Stores should be getting shipments in the next few days I'd expect. |
*watches Miles waste 20 dollars in gasoline over one game*
Surprisingly, amazon's been pretty good with their shipping. I usually get their stuff within the same work week and I live in Hawaii. Only problem is buying a bunch of items from different sellers. Then shipping costs tend to go way up. |
Good point. I already wasted enough today and here in my area of California gas is going for 4.35 on the lowest grade. Funny thing is the website is out of stock too unless I buy from a random merchant who charges like 8 bucks for shipping.
I'll call around at work tomorrow and if no one has it I'll order it. As long as I get it by this weekend I'll be happy since I'll have a chance to throw many red shells at Kairyu. Do you guys use the wheel? Using it as a controller was actually better than I expected to be. :33: |
Jesus, the gas here is still $4.17 when I drove home today.
As for the Wheel. It's strangely more responsive than I thought it would be. It will take some practice but it's possible to use it just as well as the other controller configurations. But I don't want to put in more time than I have to when I can already race well with a wavebird controller. |

The wheel? Nice peripheral, but way too hard to control. I'm more of a Classic Controller user since I don't actually keep my sensor bar hooked up to my Wii. I use the Classic Controller to move around the Wii Menu and crap anyway. |
Hey, picked it up the other day. my FC is 0173-2367-6137. had to go to wal-mart since gamestop was sold out.
|
So I managed to track down a copy of the game at Blockbuster of all places. They said they are getting 3 copies of the game this afternoon. I have read up on the online portion and rating system. Seems like it can bounce a lot and to have a higher ranking you gotta avoid getting hit or falling while maintaining first place most of the race. Seems kind of hard when other players get lucky with the items. =p
|
Once you get the golden wheel icon for using the wheel enough, does it ever go away? I ask because I've used nothing but the wheel so far so I could obtain that, but now that I have it, I'd like to give the other control schemes a shot (and quite possibly could prefer them for online play).

Anyway, I tried the Wheel first, and couldn't get used to it right away. I used the Wii-mote+Nunchuk combo for a while before trying the Wheel again, and realized that it pretty much dominates once you get it. For whatever reason, getting 2/3-star ratings with the Wheel was a breeze. And now with 4 Wii Wheels, it's mad fun multiplayer plus boxing out madness. I was surprised my friends who don't own Wiis were able to pick up using the Wheel pretty quickly. |
I love the wheel, don't get me wrong, it just seems like those who do really well aren't using it.
|
I usually get 1st or 2nd in online races and all I use is the wheel. It's just as good as a regular controller once you get used to it, and a lot more fun to play with.
Naz, which character/kart combo do you like to use for getting stars on grand prix? |
I love this game. I wish I bought it on launch today. So far i'm completing all of the 50cc cups with no problems at all. Since they're so easy for me I've been playing them with the wheel. I think the wheel actually makes driving more fun. I'll probably switch to the gamecube controller as soon as I finish the last cup. It makes the kart a lot easier to control.
I get so far ahead in 50cc that I spend most of the time getting hit by random bullshit. Ink to the screen, red shell, lightning bolt, and then a blue shell all at once. Yay! I need to figure out if there are ways to avoid these. |
50cc is for pansies. Are you a bad enough dude for 150cc?? >=(

I never understood, what's the pro to automatic on bikes? I always use manual.
|
I don't see anything beneficial to using Automatic anyway. The only thing about it is that you don't lose speed on turns, but in return, you're unable to get the mini-turbo, which is a big deal in most cases.
|
Going through 100cc now. I finished all the 50cc cups with 2 stars and I did 2 stars on half the 100cc cups. I expect to finish this tomorrow and then move on getting 2 stars in the 150cc cups. I did get unlucky a few times though. 3rd race of banana cup I got spammed with a ton of items on the last lap which resulted in me not placing first. Then it happened again on the fourth race. A blue shell hits me 10 seconds right before the finish line on the final lap. I turned the wii off in anger only to be told that I can place 3rd place in a race and still get 2 stars.
I was under the impression you had to place first every race, which I have been doing so far. Ending every cup with 60 points. Why didn't I just wait. ;___; |
Quote:
Actually, maybe the mini-turbo usage is probably misleading, since "Manual" just sounds more pro. The Manual drift + mini-boost distance/time is less than or equal to the same maneuver in Automatic distance/time, just like doing a trick on a ramp distance/time is less than or equal to just doing the jump (no trick): you jump higher and spend more time in the air but make up for that with the boost when you land. In both cases, I say less than because you could fuck it up. There might be 3 or 4 turns in the game where a perfect drift /turn + orange-boost will get you faster than the Automatic, but just for that turn and not the course overall. Just do time trials under both settings to see it... set your best time using Manual control, then note how easy it is to beat that time in Automatic (pick your best vehicle for each case). The only issue may be your skill with each control, but as long as you're not terrible at Automatic it'll work. I consider myself pretty adept at both considering I used controller for the first almost 3 weeks (until I noticed getting creamed by over-7000/8000/9000-rated Automatic Wheel players). That said, it all probably ties in with the VR score, i.e. not about getting first but about how good you are. We know using the Wheel scores more than the other controllers, so probably using manual works the same way, just as doing tricks on the jumps scores higher. In my opinion, Automatic with the Wheel feels a lil money while Automatic with a stick feels awkward. Manual with the stick with the drifting and mini-boosts is something I think we're all just used too... the gameplay, flow, control, etc. Manual with the Wheel is easily the most challenging control, so driving well with that probably helps your rating better than any other scheme. In whatever case, Manual: not a big deal. :3: |
I just notice something involving the Mii Channel. One of my brother friend was going to send us some of his created Miis. I head over to the Mii Channel and then go into the parade section to see what has "mingled". To my surprise the parade jumped from 200-ish to 900-ish Miis! I check out random Miis and then I notice something... Most of the Miis in the parade are from people that I race against in Mario Kart Wii! One big giveaway was one Mii named "Paul MKWii" that I remember racing against him. Other was Japanese Miis and people here in GFF! :tpg:
I wonder why Nintendo decided to flood people Wii with MKWii Miis. |
Makes sense to me. Those are most of the Wiis that you're connecting with. I'm sure the same thing happens with Brawl (and soon enough, Dr. Mario). Maybe it just has to do more with the fact my friends list is actually quite small (i.e. few people to connect with through the message boards).
I let the Mii Contest channel decide who I should put on my Wii anyway. Like I'd want to see the face of the person who whupped me online all over the place on Mario Kart stages >_> Unfortunately, I'm too set in my ways to start using the Wheel now. I dismissed it early on and haven't looked back. I get into a groove I like and stay there. Personal fault I guess. Most of the domination that I've |
1st Race: Mirror Mode
Me: Oh ok. 2nd Race: Mirror Mode Me: Darn. Oh well. 3rd Race: Mirror Mode Me: ...Eh? 4th Race: Mirror Mode Me: Ugh. >_> 5th Race: Mirror Mode Me: You're kidding. 6th Race: Mirror Mode Me: That's it. Is there any way to change what the race will be? I have a passionate hatred for Mirror Mode. Normally Worldwide races had them the most, but apparrently regional now too? What determines that anyway? I'd really hate to give up great online play just because every race race is Mirror Mode. I just completed 100cc and got my Mii. I suppose 150cc is next the next time I decide to turn this game on. |
Quote:
Anyway, you cannot change it. It's all random picked BUT the type of mode will be influence by players "stats" in the game. I just so happen to joined in a room with bunch of VERY good player WITH 1/2 stars. Icy joined and it made the race even more exciting/challenging. So I guess the game decided to "spice" things up and made it Mirror Mode. :tpg: Oh, and Rollins, Brawl doesn't use Mii as your "profile". |
I think I've been playing this game too much. So far I completed all of 50cc and 100cc with 2-3 star rankings. Now I'm up to the special cup of 150cc with all 2 stars. On 150cc it seems more like luck than anything. I could be smoothly riding through all the races, get up to the final lap of the third or fourth race, then get screwed over by lightning bolts and a barrage of shells (in all colors!) at the worst time causing me to lose the race due to the computers FLYING past you. This has happened a few times to me already so it's taking a bit longer to double star these 150cc. It's definitely doable. You just gotta have patience and hope the CPU doesn't screw you over. Now, anyone who has the patience to get all 3 stars in 150cc deserves a pat on the back.
I have a feeling mirror mode is going to confuse the hell out of me now that I'm learning the levels better. XD |
Actually Mirror Mode is better when you know the levels perfectly, because all you have to do is think the opposite of what you would normally do. It sounds difficult, but I dunno, it's easy for me at least.
I finally had a mirror mode online race the other day and went "OMG!!!!!!" Didn't know they did mirror mode online! |
Oh this SUCKS.
Skip to 2:50 or so. I wonder how this goes down from the perspective of the other racers. Their scores probably don't reflect the scores that are seen from the cheater's perspective, but even still, this lets him artificially inflate his score pretty easily. |
I like the disclaimers right next to all of the videos teaching us how to use the glitch.
"HEY KIDS. TODAY I WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO ROB FORT KNOX WITH 100% EFFECTIVENESS BUT YOU MUST PROMISE ME TO NEVER EVER USE THIS TECHNIQUE. WE MUST PINKY SWEAR ON IT." Now ratings points seem even less relevant in regards to skill level. Oh well. It's not like there's any sort of award other than bragging rights for high-ranking players. I'll eventually get you back to below 9000, BigCN! :argh: |
Wow. This is (kind of) the same trick that can be pull for Mario Kart DS (no pun intended >_>).
Well if "n00bs" start doing that to gain 9000+ VR and then tries to "complete" a real race and lose, they'll loose those points and have to start over. I hope Nintendo fix this glitch as they did fix the glitch to the time trial ranking. Additional Spam as I didn't see Icy post because I was busy watching the video and then posting: Quote:

(oh btw Icy, I also got my 8000VR back! Time to overtake BigCN.) |
Got my 2 star ranking today and I only bought the game 5 days ago (I didn't play it yesterday though so I really got it in 4 playing days). Talk about addiction. I probably won't bother going for all 3 stars. The game is just way too random to bother. The only times I didn't get three stars were when the AI screwed me over with items and I really don't wanna have to do cups over and over again until I get a run with very little blue shells and lightning bolts!
I guess I'll start doing some online stuff now or some time trials. I got the most important part out of the way now so I can focus on less frustration and more on fun. My friend code is: 0989-2875-6550 I'll start adding people on the wiki to my list now. |

Despite my strong hatred for Mirror Mode, I'll be giving it another shot since it's fun playing with GFFers. I just hate when I'm in 1st-2nd about to cross the finish line, and I'm so used to a map that I turn left instead of right or so, go right into a wall, and get bumped back into 7th-10th place. Ergh. More annoying than any Blue Shell to me. Except when the Blue Shell hits you when you're in the air, causing you to fly further up into the air, fall off course, and get revived in a spot that's even further behind than where you were to start. |
Miles, try to do the "tournament" (or competition AS THE REST OF THE WORLD CALLS IT) for this week before it's over. :)
...and I'll add you. XD |
Quote:
And then there was this other Japanese player who would always pick DK summit. If we played there he would somehow get 20 seconds ahead of everyone else. I wonder how he was doing that... His mii looked like Mario and his name was Mario in Katakana. :O |
He would've done that by jumping the gap where there is a fissure in the landscape. It's a massive shortcut that would seem obvious but can be hard to do. To pull it off, slow down on the hairpin bend BEFORE it.
|
So, it seems like an online race on Grumble Volcano (or as I called it, "Kairyu favorite course [to get owned]" is going to be ruin by this
AND if everybody in the race start doing this "shortcut" they would just bump into each other and screw it up. I'll say this is worst than the unplugging your router/LAN adapter trick as everyone's VRs will be affected. If Nintendo blocks that trick for online race then I wouldn't mind the trick being done offline. Edit/Additional Spam: |
Reminds me of that stupid wall jump shortcut in Wario's Stadium from Mario Kart 64 :(.
I've never seen it done online yet. Then again I hardly see Grumble Volcano being picked (again, probably because of that expliot.) Though it did screw up the regional and worldwide time trials. @Miles: The hairpin turn RABicle is talking about is pretty easy, even at high speeds. Depending on your kart/bike you can simply power slide over the cliff (before the turn) and land safely on the other side. It doesn't save you THAT much time in a online race but it is good for avoiding red shells. There is a similar shortcut in GCN DK Mountain but it's a little harder to do. |
Lol, that's quite possibly the stage I hate the most, though this shortcut thing is interesting. Never knew about it. :P
|
Ack! Someone found a way to do it without using mushroom!
|
Ugh, Grumble Volcano is one of my favourite stages. I'd hate for it to be ruined by this.
|
Ugh, I hate Grumble Volcano. <_<
It's always chosen for me on random offline. |
I added everyone in the wiki to my buddy list but only Icy, Kairyu, and bigcn added me back. I'll give it a week or so before I delete any unconfirmed names.

I think I might actually be able to later tonight since I've moved my Wii downstairs for the purpose of Wii Fit. This means, my Wii will actually be near a stable connection and then I must add everyone on the Wiki to my system.
Just give me a time frame so I could race you people. |
Yeah, there's lots of people I haven't race against for a while. I always see Kairyu and Icy online and Tails and Sacred X from time to time.
One day I want to get a full room! There's nothing like some massive 12 players mayhem without the fear of loosing VR. :tpg: |
And then run the first GFF Grand Prix.
|
I'm down for that.
I noticed most of us are only available on weekends so~ how about we do an all-cup Grand Prix on June 14th, Saturday afternoon? I know I will be free around that time since it'll be my b-day and all :3 |
Oh drat, this Saturday? Can't. Family party. D:

I'll try to play more often, but I haven't even beaten all of the regular cups yet. I've beaten the retros though.

I think I added you before, Supersonic. But I'll check and make sure.
edit: Oh right! Yeah, I'll go add you right now then. Quote:
*I think I just started an unnecessary amount of competition* |
That might've been for Brawl, I didn't even know my friend code for Mario Kart until an hour ago. XD
|
Anyway, if anyone wants to join me online. I'll be on from now until about 10:30 PM EST or so. Gonna add in some friend codes and stuff and do some regional races.
Additional Spam: Oh god dammit, Icy and Kai. Hahaha, someone tried to exploit the glitch in Grumble Volcano! Didn't work out for him though. :( Tried it myself, but I'm horrible at this stuff. And I totally didn't lose that round since that Ronald guy playing with us in those rounds apparently did worse than I did... And I was behind a lap. o_o |
Quote:
Oh, and it's on bitch! XP Anyway, it was fun race tonight. */lying* I forgot that I shouldn't be playing on a Tuesday... and look what happen to me! */excuse?* Even people with 6000VR or less was beating me. ;_; |
But ugh, what a horrible set for me tonight. ;_;
Fuck Rainbow Road, Maple Treeway, and Moonlight Highway. Those are the only three courses I went to today. Seriously. Both Maple Treeway and Rainbow Road got chosen back to back. |
*checks the Mario Kart Wii Channel*
@Miles: Ohhhhh I see what you did there. You threw down the gauntlet. Time to beat the crap out of your records! Quote:
Nice races though. I'll get my revenge some other time xD Quote:
|
See, now I don't mind the three you mentioned. I have a particular hate for the three I mentioned.
I'm surprised not a lot of people choose SNES Mario Circuit 3. That only got chosen once the whole time I was playing. AND I STILL DIDN'T BREAK 7000. :gonk: |
Kairyu's getting a little too excited over time trials. All I was doing was trying to unlock the expert staff ghosts and I somehow beat his slow times in the process. Anyways, if we keep racing eachothers ghosts then I'll never be able to steal your VR in the online racing mode. :3
I'll probably stop playing Mario Kart for a little while come tomorrow. The most epic game release is upon us this week. Metal Gear Solid 4 takes priority over everything else. |

Speaking of MGS4, I know I won't be playing the game (because I suck at MGS) but I like watching my cousin play it. I need to go over his house. lol |
Quote:
I'll let you keep DK Summit though, since I hate that track for some reason :3:. Anyway go play your MGS4, NO REGRETS. |
You can keep your high scores. =P I wasn't really planning on turning it into some huge competition. I figure why waste time doing runs until you get them perfect when you can be pwning people online and building up your ranking. Besides, all the world record owners use Funky Kong and that annoys the hell out of me for some reason.
I'll try to play online the next few nights. I don't wanna rush through MGS4 as fast as I did the cups in MK considering this game was a long time in the making. |
Quote:
And lets not forget about the "tournament"/competition. Since it only last a week it's fun trying to beat someone time (hey Icy!). :D |
I dunno, I seem to enjoy perfecting my racing routes through Time Trails. And with the addition of "online" Time Trail+Tournament rankings it just got a couple notches more interesting. To me :3
Racing online to gain (more like lose, am I right?) VR points wears on me after awhile. It was all fine until someone figured out how to exploit the system to get points without beating anyone. As is with many online games =/ So I find myself only racing online when other friends are hopping on. |
After some insanely long delay I've gone and added everyone on the wiki to my FC list. If you've added me before and I never got back to you, I apologize for that. It can be difficult to get Wii time (it's hooked up to the main TV everyone uses) so I sometimes just go long periods without turning the thing on. So... yeah.
I do already have a couple of you on my list, though, so hopefully we can get some races in sometime. |
Okay, finding glitches within the game is okay but HACKING??! Come on people! Do you have a life? Oh wait, this person doesn't!
I found this out from another forum... which link to gamefaqs board. If you don't want to read it then basically when playing online avoid a male Mii from California named "ihack@you". I suggest to disconnect when you see that person on the globe before the race start because you'll have no chance of "beating" him. |
I thought there wasn't any cheating devices for the wii yet. Maybe he's running a modified ISO of the game on a modded wii. This shit was bound to happen sooner or later. I liked the VR system but it seems pretty useless now with the disconnect trick and cheaters around.
|
There isn't anything that would allow you to do that on the Wii. But I would assume he is using a modded Wii with a modded ISO. That said, Icy started a "friends-only" Mario Kart Wii GP thread. Hopefully we can have at least one weekends worth of cheat-free racing.
|
You guys will have a weekend of hacker free racing. I, on the other hand, will be glued to my 47 inch 1080p widescreen TV which would be getting fed video via HDMI cable by my PS3 running one of the most impressive looking games in the world: Metal Gear Solid 4. Plus the game experience itself is quite thrilling.
If I stop playing Mario Kart for too long I'll get rusty at it. Plus I'm still kind of waiting for the other 20 people I added to add me back. I only have 4 people actually 100% registered on my buddy list. I take it at this point most people are tired of playing it except for the hardcore players. |
Right now it's kind of difficult to hack actual game data but I guess that person manage to do it.
The only thing the "average" person can do is remove the error 001 that detects modchip, edit simple .ini file (like Manhunt 2 to make it "uncensored") or replacing similar data from another game to another like I did here (I would had done the same for MKWii but then I would have to replace both "normal" and "final lap" music and there's no brstm encoder). Well Miles you go enjoy MGS4 while I'll play MKWii on my 52 inch LCoS widescreen TV (though it's only 720p; TV was bought 4 years ago). |

I just haven't had time to play online since I'm usually busy with other games around my night time hours. |
I think I played enough Mario Kart to say I can retire from it. At least from the Grand Prix mode. Earlier today I did one final cup in mirror mode and I was awarded with a third star next to my name. I'm kinda glad it didn't take that long to do, or else I really would have throw my controller out the window.
Also, I found out this week that the Dolphin Dasher is basically the best vehicle in the game. No wonder everyone uses it. Now I wonder if Miles can keep up with me (still haven't raced you at all, I think.) Though I do know Icy kinda sorta did. Still, I shown a marked improvement in my racing =p. |
Hilariously, I'm actually playing a lot more Brawl nowadays since I didn't get the chance to play the hell out of it when it first came out since I had to leave the country a week right after. I did pick up Mario Kart for a little gaming today and I am pretty damn rusty. I'll need to get back into shape if we do something this coming weekend.
I was still far away from challenging grand prix for 2 stars so this break probably doesn't help things =/ I'll just have to enjoy single star-ness for awhile longer. |
At least you people can enjoy single starness.
That fucking 150cc Flower Cup is killing me for some reason. They know exactly how to piss me off moments before I cross the line. |
Hah yeah, I think online Brawl is more fun than online MK, which is why I haven't played MK for the past several weeks. I'm always up for Brawl over the weekend :3
|
I think both games are fun online, it just that Nintendo puts more into MKWii online than Mr. Sakurai puts into Brawl online.
Anyway, anybody enjoying the June 2nd online "tournament"/competition? I wish (though I'm 99% sure it WON'T happen) Nintendo reveals some sort of external storage device so they can have "updates" for MKWii to fix all the glitches and hacks AND add a new CC which you race in reverse! IMO it feels like a whole new experience on an existing track. Mirror Mode doesn't come close to it. |
If they ever do I get the feeling they will just release a firmware upgrade that will involve using the SD card slot as the storage extension.
This competition is actually pretty fun. The slightly redesigned course makes me wish the guys at nintendo would incorporate these in online races. It will help keep things fresh and new. |
And so I return. HAI CHAOTIC!
3566 2893 4552 How many people with FCs in the Wiki actually play often? |

I don't know if I can beat you or not. If I just want to play for fun, is that no good to you? Are you like Ryu in Street Fighter, travelling the world looking for greater and greater challenges until finally getting an arse kicking off the guy who killed your master?

yes
good idea racing is very fun indeed i just get to pumped up about it. wanna link?
