Macross/II/Plus/7/Dynamite 7/Zero/Frontier

I thought it would be nice to have a small space where the macross fan can give opinions about favourites series.
I have seen robotech, macross II, macross 7, dynamite 4 and zero.
i must say that i like a lot all the series, but my fav is macross 7, i know its a little repetitive the first 10-15 episodes, but after that it slowly starts to get better.

Fatt Mar 27, 2006 09:06 PM

I am a big fan of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross, espically for the end. I also really liked "Do You Remember Love?", even if it is super 80's cheesy. I never really got in to the other Macross series. It isn't that I avoid them, but I just don't know what to aim for, and how much I should be willing to pay to see them.

Shenlon Mar 27, 2006 09:49 PM

I loved macross plus probably becuase it was the only one I bothered watching.
Not the best of endings but the fight with the mechs/jets were intense.

Spatula Mar 27, 2006 09:54 PM

I'm pretty much into the SDF-1 Series and the DYRL - "Ai, Oboetemasu ka" movie. Macross Plus probably takes the cake though as it still has pretty top notch animation done almost entirely by the traditional hand drawn method, as well as the story line is engaging as the UN Spacy wants to see which of two companies can build the next Valkyrie. I've heard horror stories of "ROBOTECH" which is, from what I hear, the US rip-off of one of Japan's revered mecha animes. I have not seen it, and won't really bother to watch ROBOTECH any time soon.

Macross II and Zero aren't really that engaging, personally, however the CG done for Zero is fantastic.

I'm currently am building a few of the 1/72 HASEGAWA kits of their Macross line and their great! MACPLA!

silvervalkyrie Mar 27, 2006 10:01 PM

My all-time favorite is Macross Plus; the YF-19 is just my dream aircraft. The characters are all enjoyable (except maybe Myung - she's too whiny and indecisive for my tastes), the animation was exceptional for the time, and the music is, two words: Yoko Kanno. What more could you ask for?

Macross Zero was a nice detour to the past and I thank Kawamori for it but the whole "bird-human"/Shin sucking so much it hurt crap really brought the show down. Roy's entanglements with his old mentor and his mentor's new protege' were some amazing bits, the animation is SUPERB, and the CG fighting is great. The soundtrack is VERY repetitive and if it weren't for the efw vocal songs it'd be worthless.

Macross II was crap. The G-Saviour of the Macross Universe. I remember watching the english dub of the Movie version and thinking "Damn, Hibiki Kanzaki is a pussy...." every time he screamed or gave some lame-ass dailogue. His last monologue while in prison was particularly sappy, contrite, and annoying. The only thing that I like in the movie was Feff and his incessant use of profanity. A+ cursing in Marduk.

Macross Do You Remember Love was ok. Lots of Max and Miriya is always good. But that's it.

Original Macross (AKA Super Dimesional Fortress Macross) was, and still is, the badd-ass grand-daddy of space dramas. I love watching it despite the dated animation and the HORRENDOUS Lynn Minmay music.

Dude, don't diss Lynn Minmay. I listen to her songs! (Do you remember, My boyfriend is a pilot). I really did like them ;_;.

Shoo SHOO- Shoo SHOO...(now I better find that track on my media player)

ROCK THE 80's LOVE.

...but seriously, if you didn't grow up in the 80's, I would be worried if you liked Minmay's music.

Edit: ...and yeah... 84'... I'm worried... :p

I'll second this; Feff was the man in this series. It didn't hurt that whoever did the character and hardware designs for the Marduk is certainly worthy of kudos.
Bonus points for literal disarming of Nexx' VF-2JA.

shao pai lon come to my mind!!!!

Double Post:
looks like im the only ome that like macross 7

silvervalkyrie Mar 28, 2006 09:46 AM

Oh, I forgot Macross 7. Sadly, I watched it as a joke. And ENJOYED it. Immensely. I absolutely think Nekki is the most entertaining of all the male macross leads; he tries os hard to be an anti-hero he becomes the people's hero in a wierd twist. Of course I do wish the Fire Valkyrie was in someone else's hands (Miriya in VF-19 Kai would be something to see).

And about Lynn Minmay, I was born in '85 and I still love *some* 80s much, just not hers. Other animes from the 80s had hot music; Gundam 0083 for example has such great music or the Transformers Movie 1.

The theme from SDF Macross was really good in a campy way; a deep Japanese male voice saying, "MA - CO - ROSS!" Hilarity in it's best form.

MrSatan Mar 28, 2006 03:14 PM

i prefer the music from 7 and dynamite 7 over the old tv and movies.
they are good, but i just prefer 7

Spatula Mar 28, 2006 07:59 PM

Why would I be ashamed of 80's music? It's sure a hell lot better than the shit I hear on the radio these days. I listen to stuff 200+ years old.

And as for the MACROSS opening theme, It's a pretty entertaining OP theme, I like it!

chato Mar 28, 2006 08:08 PM

ahh all of these are classics to me. Though i haven't seen all of Robotech/Super Dimensional Fortress.. I enjoyed Plus and the second movie.
IMO, the best music was in Plus and Macross 2. dunno why but i like it. Macross Zero had alot of potential. it wasn't that bad either but the cg was too much =/ overall , none of the macross series disappointed me. As long they have good music (which is the most important thing in macross) i can handle it ^^;.

Hikaru Ichijo Mar 28, 2006 08:52 PM

...........

Oh if ... musical praise of macross ... there is no another word to describe more that... Wonderful...
The music of every Macross's production is very important

All the Macross's OST are brilliant ... nevertheless Macross Ai Oboeteimasuka OST to my judgment is the best...

:)

Rei no Otaku Mar 29, 2006 10:59 AM

Wow, happy to see so many Macross fans. Macross was the show that got me into anime in the first place. And it's still one of my favorite shows of all time. I feel bad for Minmay though. So many people give hate her. I can understand that, but the poor thing can't help it. Plus her music rocks. An Angel Paints is my favorite song.

Macross Plus is a masterpiece. Everything about it was perfect. Few shows can have such great action mixed with amazing emotion.

K_ Takahashi Mar 29, 2006 11:09 AM

Macross Plus is a really well produced OVA for the time ('94/'95) (in which Kawamori had an unlimited budget to work on for ep.4).

(I guess I should mention Megazone23 as a spinoff series,
Spoiler:
because it's basically a society living in the SDF anyway
)

MrSatan Mar 30, 2006 12:12 AM

i hope that macross continues either on tv or ovas

So this one programmed a new macross ... though Shoji Kawamori has not given details ... only that might be located between Macross Zero and Macross or in 2056

MrSatan Mar 30, 2006 10:54 PM

really?
nice!!!!
didnt knew that hope it come soon!

HightopNinja Mar 31, 2006 02:54 AM

As stated by almost everyone in the thread, the original is always the best.

Macross II, while not the greatest, was still pretty enjoyable. The animation was alright for its time, and the voice acting(japanese cast) was awesome. My only problem was the ending really. Everything else felt like it was the direct sequel of Macross.

Macross Seven...well, I personally hated it, but that's one humble ninja's opinion. Just didn't enjoy the music at all.

Macross Zero was beautiful. The story was subpar, but the music, acting, and artwork was superb. It was a visual orgasm to say the least, just not much plot involved.

Macross Plus is my favorite of the sequels. The story was tight and fluid, the animation was vivid and the CG in the movie didn't look out of place at all. The characters were all great, the voice acting great, the music was some of the best to be put in Macross since the original, and overall it was just awesome.

I want a Macross series that takes place quite some time after the main nemesis of the Zendraeti fleet is defeated, but just before the events of Macross Plus. I'd love to see the VF-11B in action.

As for Flash Back 2012, I doubt much would be of the VF-4 Lightning, but it'd make a very nice side story with a new cast.

hikarub Apr 11, 2006 05:17 AM

Does anyone know what became of Hikaru Ichijo and Misa Hayase after the original Macross series? That's one part of the whole Macross universe that was never explained or been accounted for.

We pretty much know they left Earth (Macross Flasback 2012) aboard the superdimensional fotress Megaroad but we never heard from them since. Max and Miriya have returned in Macross 7, and Roy Focker returned for the prequel Macross Zero. But where the hell is Hikaru and Misa?!

Macross 7:
Spoiler:
...Max and Miriya preside over Colony 7. I know that means that there were 6 previous colonies which left Earth before them, but I don't remember if they ever mentioned if the Megaroad was one if them. They found survivors of one of the colonies taken over by the Protodeviln but I'm guessing they were from colony 5 or 6.

B4-Hunter Apr 11, 2006 05:26 AM

My adventure starts and end on Macross Zero. I just couldn't walk next to such a great Anime with awesome sky fights. Didn't had a chance to see any other series part like Plus or Dynamite 7. For now I'll stop on what I had seen so far there are to much new Anime released and I don't have time to watch them all =(. Don't worry Macross I'll watch you someday!

P.S
Like Macross?? Try Tactical Roar!!

i think that maybe some ovas would tell about what happened to hikaru and misa.
i think that a anime series(if any) would be after dynamite 7

Soluzar Apr 19, 2006 04:43 PM

I love Macross, but all I've seen so far is SDF Macross. I guess it's DYRL? and Plus next up, but I don't know when I'll be able to get my hands on them. I am looking forward to it though...

MrSatan Apr 19, 2006 09:19 PM

DYRL its really good, is like a retelling of the story with different(and even better twist) than the original, its must seen dude!
i order Plus, but i havent seen it, it shouls arrive next week, but i heard nothing more than good things for it.
I personally love 7, i hope you will like it, there is a group called central anime that is distributing the whole 7 anime, you should check it out.
Zero is a excellent, but different take to the macross universe.

my advice for you: Download ep of 7, buy plus, try to fin dyrl(i think its not on dvd yet)

good..
he is very dificult that new macross is developed with Hikaru, Misa and Min May like protagonists... the own Shoji Kawamori has mentioned that the history of these characters already was counted and that serious lack of originality to bring them of return....

with respect to another one macross after Dynamite 7
then perhaps... although serious also little probable since to the characters of Macross 7 already they have appeared often... as much in ovas, movies and series...

so that all the previous one... then so that Kawamori thinks that Macross is an event... (like important World War II or other events in our history) and that within that event or event are many characteres with a history that to count.

The "new" VF-0s were awesome as well as the CG, but I really couldn't care for the characters, except Focker. They all seemed so stoic or relatively unconnected with each other. It's still worth to see this series regardless of being a Macross fan or not, similarly to Macross Plus. However I found Isamu more "connectible" than Shin, despite Zero's 5 part OVA compared to MP's 4episodes.

I guess the thread maker won't mind for me to post some of my 1/72 Hasegawa Valkyries?

DYRL is the movie of Macross... Macross Do You Remember Love? or Macross Ai Oboeteimasuka
this movie left in 1984 and this based in the series of TV Macross (1982)

and is today one of best movies in the history of anime...

oh my god!!! this is sweet dude!

Spatula Apr 28, 2006 10:02 PM

Not worth my money at like what, $250 USD for that. I think this is why I stick with the kits. Plus the kits look nicer, albiet their smaller scale. 1/72 vs 1/48. Even the 1/48 VF-1 Strikes, I'm not interested in unless it's for like $20.00. Sorry, I just had a very bad experience with one of the Yamato ones.

Ramenbetsu Apr 29, 2006 03:13 AM

hey spatula? where do you buy your paints and models? I used to a big gundam modeler a few years back but never got around to actually painting em. Now that im older though, I'd like to think that I have a much better attention span lol.

Back to Topic! I just downloaded a subbed version of DYRL because if i remember correctly, its not out in tye US yet and as everyones saying, MP is awesome (try to get the movie version if you havent yet ordered it MrSatan, I believe it has extra scenes). I personally thought Zero was good except it kinda dragged during ep 4 and 3. Good end and good start but meh in the middle and as Saptula was saying, the characters are pretty bland except for Focker

Spatula Apr 29, 2006 03:41 AM

Paints I buy locally of course. I stick with Tamiya mainly, and some Gunze. I use Testors occassionally for detail jobs or panelling.
I get my kits all around town and even the net, mainly HLJ.com.

MrSatan May 3, 2006 07:45 PM

i just watched macross plus, its really good i really recommend it to everyone!!!
if you havent seen it, you must, too bad that Manga(the dvd rights owner) suck big time and the extras are nonexistant

Foshi May 3, 2006 11:16 PM

Mecha are my gold I love the UC Gundam timeline, but I am a serious newbie to the Macross world. The only Macross I have seen is Zero. It was a good show. I really enjoyed the action, characters, and story. Ending was too mystic though. The mecha designs are awesome. The designers know how to do transformations right.

I was thinking about watching Plus next. What do you guys think?

MrSatan May 4, 2006 08:56 PM

well, that is a good option, but now that you are following the original timeline, try to find the original macross series, or maybe do you remember love movie, (which kick so much ass), anyway, macross plus dont tell much of the original story so you can watch it with problem.

Foshi May 4, 2006 09:22 PM

Cool, I'll make sure to pick that up some time soon. I was also pointed in the direction of Macross 7 so I will start that one after Plus.

MrSatan May 5, 2006 09:45 PM

good choice dude, i love macross 7, the music is the best,in fact im listening to 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 nights, a song from the soundtrack that wasnt released on the anime series, but i warn you, macross 7 is a follow up to the main story, so you will spoil many things from the original series, even it have some stuff from macross plus(the VF fighters).
anyway is you want macross 7, central anime have everything of that series

new dvd and cd..

following with the subject of Macross 7...
as some already they know... (and those that does not know then already know).

Yoshiki Fukuya months ago (2005) sent to a DVD and CD commemorating the 10 years of the conclusion of Macross 7 (10 years.... the time happens fast.)

DVD
Yoshiki Fukuyama Presents Fire Bomber 2005: A Tribute To Nekki Basara.

this DVD without a doubt is a collection item since to obtain a copy he is very dificil... so single was sold in some concerts and the page Three nine Entertaiment...

CD
Fukuyama Fire!!! A Tribute To Nekki Basara
14 Tracks

the CD is more easy to obtain... and is very recommendable... since the new versions of the Macross 7's songs are brilliant.

oh i see, i thought it was something more important, involving guld, isamu and myung, the matter of their brake is not clear for me.

hikarub May 18, 2006 01:11 AM

This is pretty much how I can sum up the story of what happened between the 3:
Spoiler:
We all know that Guld Bowman was a halfbreed, meaning one of his parents was a Zentraedi while the other was human. Though there shouldn't have been any problems with this (look at Max and Miria and all 7 of their kids!) there was something wrong with Guld's physiology. A bad temper and sometimes berserker mindset often plagued him, forcing him to consume drugs to keep him in check. (Remember the shakes he had?) We know all this from the doctor's report which Miller requested.

So Guld was a little unstable to say the least. Anyways Guld, Isamu and Myung were friends since they were little and practically grew up together. So what tore them apart? Well, from their conversations you can tell that Guld and Isamu always had a competitive streak going on when it came to flying, but I think Guld's psychological problems started to manifest as he got older.

During their many flashbacks in the story, something happened to Myung and both men seemed to blame the other. In fact, as Guld finds out in the climax of his battle with Isamu, Myung was attacked and (probably) nearly raped - by himself (he sees his own reflection in the mirror). Isamu was knocked down by Guld but managed to recover as soon as Guld snapped out and realized what he was doing. Because of the immense regret and guilt of what happened, Guld repressed his memories unconciously only being able to remember the image of a distraught Myung, and Isamu holding her. Because he couldn't remember what happened before, he probably only had bits and pieces and just assumed Isamu was the reason for her distress.

When it became clear that he couldn't remember what happened, Isamu and Myung decided not to reveal the truth to Guld. As a result, Isamu and Guld's friendship fell apart. Both men drifted apart and eventually began to drift away from Myung as well. Afterwards, Myung left Eden for Earth. Isamu joined UN Spacy as a fighter pilot and Guld remained on Eden.

When Guld regains his lost memories he is ashamed, but Isamu tells him "that time during the festival.....I was the one who trashed your plane....[later]....let's just forget everything that happened after that.......I'm sorry....". Isamu apologizes first, leaving the way open for a reconcilliation between the two.

Wasn't that called "Robotech" instead of being any reference to Macross? I remember when that aired on Cartoon Network around 1993-1995-ish. Probably started to air earlier than that. But I watched it everyday and even tried to record them all on video cassette.

And when Macross Zero came out, the animation and 3D scenes are fantastically beautiful. Though, probably overly dramatic in certain scenes, but like in episdoe 1 where:
Spoiler:
The new Valkyrie model is tested and sent into combat. They show the transformation sequence and how the pilot tracks all those rockets with his eye and a computer tracking sensor to coordinate an attack for nullifying them. Then they get into the whole swerving in midair fight scene showing him shooting defensive homing rockets and blasting away with his rifle. OVERLY DRAMATIC, but cool still.

well, i think must of us watch robotech in our childhood(i had like 5 or 6, now i have 26) and i always love it, but for some special reason i only remember the macross saga, it had the biggest impact on me, and when i learned the truth(that robotech was a mixture of 3 different series) i sticked to macross por than robotech.
anyway, you are right macross zero is awesome, the visual are outstanding, hope that kawamori continue working on more macross in the future

Remake or no Remake... of SDF Macross ?

they would like remake of SDF Macross?

this is a good possibility of opening speculations on if we them fans, would be arranged to request or to see remake of Macross TV series but with present animation.

Kawamori has said that if asi would be had to do remakes of many its works... that are many possibilities...

Note... this is single one discucion mine... who does not take like the news or possibility that the new production in the universe macross is going to be remake...

MrSatan Jun 1, 2006 05:21 PM

intresting idea hikaru, a remake, i never thought of that, but if it uses animation like macross zero it would rock.
BTW you know if some company have or will have the rights for macross zero?
i want them on DVD(and i hope that ADV pick it instead of Manga)
i just got tired searching for fukuyama fire, i ordered it, it should be here around the end of the month

Isnt ADVs macross the same as Animeigo? I remember reading about and i think the only thing ADV changed was packaging, they put the whole series into one box set and dubbed it.

MrSatan Jun 18, 2006 10:53 AM

well i read the same too, but i also read in some other place(i think it was in amazon) that ADV's Macross was inferior in quality to animego, im a little curious .

hahaha yeah. I just have to figure out where i placed the manual -_-

In another more related note, Did we find out the differences between the animego and adv versions of macross? I bought the Zeta Gundam boxset recently and im intrested in picking up some macross as well.

Side Note: been eyeing this airbrush up:http://www.hlj.com/product/tam74525

Spatula Aug 8, 2006 03:07 PM

I started out with a cheap cheap Testors Aztek aircan airbrush and returned it promptly. I don't like using aircans as since they're about $20 a shot, this adds up over time. As well, I got a double action airbrush - Paasche VL, so you can control both the airflow and the amount of paint; the single action only allows you to control how much paint you want out, but the airflow is constant. This doesn't mean that single actions aren't good. I've seen very good kits done with only a single action. I also have an aircompressor. It's not blazingly loud, but annoying when the tank gets depleeted since the motor starts up again. I just bought some ear muffs and that problem is done and over with.

I suggest you get an airbrush locally, if possible, so incase if you've got questions and such, you can go back to the shop and consult. At one time after using it initially, I thought I broke it when I dismantled the trigger to clean the insides, but it was okay.

Another thing to put into consideration is the cleaning required for a single vs double action. While I've gotten use to cleaning the double action, it may seem a bit intimidating with like 9 differernt parts to clean and put back together to make it work optimally again, where as a single action only has maybe 4-5 parts to put back together. Now cleaning isn't so much a big deal since I can put back my double action without too much fuss, once you use one pretty frequently.

Also make sure what the return policies are. Again, it's your call! :)

MrSatan Aug 8, 2006 03:09 PM

no dude, i have not confirm that, if someone have the animeigo release please post some pics.

Spatula Aug 8, 2006 03:10 PM

From what I've read from Macrossworld.com forums:

At least they kept the original Japanese songs instead of using those horrific Robotech tunes. The biggest complaint about the dub so far is the mispronounciation of some of the words, mainly when almost everyone says "Muh-cross" instead of "Mac-ross". I think Mari Iijima is the only person in the cast who pronounces everything correctly. Another difference is that the ADV discs come with some extras like interviews, commentaries, and such. The Animeigo set does have some hidden "Easter eggs," but I've never watched any of the extras on either set. But they're there if you're interested.

I asked this same question there too. :)

Yes but isnt the Animeigo version kind of hard to find now? Animeigo's license expired or something along the lines so they dont actually distribute/make it anymore.

Spatula Aug 8, 2006 11:57 PM

True, I guess if you find a new box, TAKE IT!

BTW i think that the animeigo macross DVDs were more expensive than the adv releases.

Yeah i believe they were, and they also came in sets of like 3 which didnt really make sense IMO. You can still get Vol 1-3 of the Animeigo set for around $50 from Amazon Marketplace sellers

hey dudes, here is something curious.
I was watching my Macross II DVD and in the last 40 minutes i noted something.

ok...
respect to DVD of Macross of Animeigo...
it is certain that they already lost the license...
it is certain that edition (animeigo edition) of Macross TV is very dificult to obtain...

but...
Today .... that edition is now on sale on Robotech.com... in other presentation...

Harmony Gold ... that has the license of Macross in USA and is the company that it practically has to give to the approval for all product macross that it is sold in the USA.
after Animeigo finished selling its DVDs of Macross... Harmony Gold on sale sent in exclusive right in robotech.com this boxset...
(and as Harmony Gold remained with the Master of Animeigo...)

http://www.robotech.com/images/conte..._93_2_7377.jpg

this edition is practically the same that the one of Animeigo...

Harmony Gold coat that boxset... after Animeigo finished selling its edition... and long before that ADV on sale sent to their edition of Macross TV...

the Boxset is sold in exclusive right in Robotech.com... and... I dont believe that it has left many copies available (to robotech.com)

on the other hand...
the price of the Boxset is without a doubt very good.

info by ANN.com

A vocalist affiliated with composer Yoko Kanno who is known for singing in made-up languages in lyrics that she wrote. But the fact that no one seemed to have seen her before have made people speculate that she is actually Kanno herself under a pseudonym.

Gabriela Robin in Macross Pluss Performance the song "Saint-U"....

is good... :)

works in Anime Industry

Cowboy Bebop (TV) : Theme Song Performance (Ep. 9 - "Cats on Mars")

hikarub Oct 26, 2006 09:26 AM

Well, scratch that. I was thinking of getting it but after seeing the price I don't think it's worth it. If you're interested, the retail price should be around Y15'540.00, that's around HK$1'010.00 or US$130.00?

Heh, heh, that's almost as expensive as the new YF-19 coming from Yamato this November. What, is it gold-plated or something?! Why is it so expensive?!

Guys, looks like Wave is coming out with a 1/5000 scale transformable SDF-1 Macross. I personally don't want it though - I've had VERY bad experiences with toys with moveable parts as their main feature.

MrSatan Nov 7, 2006 08:26 PM

it looks really cool dude.

Spatula Nov 7, 2006 08:29 PM

It's probably not worth it, dude. Even a big Macross fan myself, I think it looks more like a toy than anything else. And spending half of the cost of a Wii on that is out of the question for me. But of course I have my exceptions and do buy expensive collector toy items.

MrSatan Nov 8, 2006 09:07 PM

Sorry, I didn't read my above post to see what you were referencing to. Why would I take the gaming consoles instead of the toy? I'm pretty sure most people would know why. Yes, I'd put my money towards a gaming console, I can't see deriving the same satisfaction out of some static thing that will be collecting dust.

CityHunter Nov 22, 2006 03:44 AM

WHAT HAPPEND TO HIKARU AND MISA..ANWERS HERE..MAY BE..

hi all macross fans..i like to share this with you..this is some kind of resaerch made..for poelple how study the posible reasons for the unfinished story of hikaru misa and minmay..
this is NOT oficcial..its most like a rummor..but it maybe trow some light in the subject..

this are the most voted reasons:

the studio dont wont to contiune the story of th war heroes because Harmony gold made it first..and if you remember macross releasers never wont to see the ''robotech'' version of macross..its seem like an insult for macross..
(this is a resume..the explenation is more long..)

and the other reason is the suicide of th guy who play the roll of hikaru ichijo..Arihiro Hase..it jump from his apartmet building..This occurred shortly after recording the Macross World Radio Show.
the reasons are ''officialy''unknown..but judged by his ''friend''relation with mary iijima ..the guy seems in love of her..but she say that it was like a brother to her..
so in memory of the Arihiro Hase..nobody goes to play that roll..

take your own conclutions..

hikarub Nov 22, 2006 04:20 AM

I always wanted to know what happened to Misa and Hikaru after they left Earth aboard the Megaroad, I was always hoping for some word as to their fate, whether official or otherwise.

Knowing now that Hase Arihiro is no more kind'a makes sense why no sequel was ever made, but I think there are other ways to continue the story or at least leave a footnote.

Anyway, leaving the fate of Hikaru, Misa, their daughter, and the Megaroad unknown lends to the mystery as well, I guess.

MrSatan Nov 29, 2006 02:23 PM

hmmm intresting, i never heard of that, and that explains a lot why the story never continued.

Hikaru Ichijo Dec 14, 2006 02:29 PM

....

is simple ...

Shoji kawamori... it does not want to make that sequel

already it has said... that retaking the history of Minmay, Misa and Hikaru would be lack of originality

the concept of Macross for Kawamori is that it is an event... so... inside that event there are very characters with a history that to count...

With all due respect Mr Satan, would you mind if I personally redid the opening post for you, and make it more "up-to-spiff" and attractive? I'll post it in the testing thread, and get a mod to merge my opening post with yours. Is this alright with you?

MrSatan Jan 19, 2007 08:37 AM

yeah spatula, no problem with me, go on

ok...
again here.... after long time... XD

the official page of Macross it has changes, after very years...
this can represent a small indication of something new, towards the 25 Anniversary... (03/Octuber/2007)

check the page... www.macross.co.jp

to wait....

hikarub Jan 22, 2007 08:28 PM

Sorry to go back to old arguments again, but seeing those images on that link, Hikaru....

....was Macross II ever considered canon in the Macross Universe? Didn't someone mention it was an alternate universe story or something and not a sequel or whatever? I seem to remember hearing about that...

Nevertheless, those images capture every production that has appeared so far (not including games or manga); Macross, Macross: Do You Remember Love?, Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross 7, and Macross Zero.

Can't wait to see what happens in October!

:D

MrSatan Jan 23, 2007 10:17 AM

macross 2 is a alternate universe story, nevertheless its a macross title that they cant just forget about. (juat my opinion)
anyway its good that they are .
remodeling the macross website, it was too simple and basic for an animeted legend like macross.
and im positve that they are working on something that will thrill us on october!
*cross fingers waiting for a sequel to macross 7 and fukuyama songs involvement*

Hikaru Ichijo Feb 23, 2007 05:19 PM

mmm...
i hope that on next months Bandai or Big West say any news to respect...

Website update!

Thought I'd let you know a little bit about the update over at Gunota Headlines:

http://aeug.blogspot.com/

Quote:

Macross site renewal
Celebrating the 25th anniversary, Big West renews the official Macross site. As usual not much is available content wise, however Victor Entertainment is holding auditions for the next heroine of the upcoming Macross series.
Official Macross website
Victor Entertainment's webpage hosting the audition for lead female role

So it looks like there's gonna be another Macross feature coming up soon, though it doesn't seem to indicate whether it is a TV series, OVA, or movie. Just this piece of news has gotten me all psyched!! Hopefully the official website will shed more light on this when it is updated (hopefully soon)!!

:D

Spatula Mar 9, 2007 11:18 PM

Finally something I'm looking forward to. Gunbuster got an "updated treatment", now hopefully Macross, and most of all, PATLABOR. That would be the icing on the cake.

Well, thought I'd hunt around a bit....found a trailer (I think it's a trailer) for Macross F (Frontier) on the Bandai Channel. For some reason I can't access it (I keep getting this "Sorry, you cannot access the contents" message everytime I try to go in).

Anyway, maybe you guys will have better luck. Follow the link below and click on the link in the middle of the page. You'll be at the Bandai Channel web page and will see all sorts of anime trailers you can watch (supposedly). The first slot with 『マクロスF(フロンティア)』 and a mugshot of a blonde girl is the Macross F trailer (again, supposedly. It just didn't work for me, neither of the bandwidth choices got me anywhere....)

Zukan Nov 18, 2007 11:35 AM

Well there is a trailer I saw on the frontpage of the official website if that is what you've been talking about.

Seems like I can't find it now, but either way it's up on youtube:
YouTube Video
Error; are you sure that's a YouTube link?

chato Nov 18, 2007 11:43 AM

This show has a lot of potential just by looking at the trailer. I'll definately watch this whenever it comes out. Thanks for the vid, zukan.

hikarub Nov 19, 2007 05:07 AM

Wow, whoever mentioned the show having a Macross 7 feel was pretty much on the money (oh, it was Tokubetsu). In the beginning of that trailer you can see colony ships so I guess this where Frontier takes place. The main colony ship is a clam-shell colony, pretty much exactly the same as City 7 (from Macross 7). You can see it leading all the other vessels in the beginning.

Despite the poor quality of the video, what I saw was enough to get me excited about seeing this show. The action sequences look pretty cool and I hope there will be plenty of 'em! :D Looks good and hopefully it will be awesome!!!!

:judge:

Sonus Dec 24, 2007 09:50 AM

Episode 1 of Macross Frontier is out by Seiyan fansubs.

So far I think this will be a pretty good series for the Macross line. It's always interesting to know how the future will progress for past series. And it looks like it'll be a good progression at that.

The animation reminds me a lot of Macross Zero when it comes to battles. But the main animation used for regular character interaction seems pretty much like every other anime out there.

Spoiler:
I smell a hint of Robotech season 1 towards the end. New Rick Hunter?

Zukan Dec 25, 2007 10:30 PM

Just saw the shinsen subs. It got off with a pretty good start. The visuals were spot on, very detailed with impressive animations (during space battles). Music sounds like it took a trip back to Macross Plus, as expected. Looking forward to see the rest of this show.

hikarub Dec 26, 2007 02:17 AM

Awesome! I just watched the subs from Shinsen as well. So far, the series is everything I was hoping for. I know it's just the first episode, but I got a really good feeling so far, like this is gonna be an excellent show.

I love the references and kick-backs to past series:
Spoiler:
- Sheryl: "Listen to my song!" (Basara Neki from Macross Seven)
- Sheryl's last name is Nome (spelled Norme in Shinsen's subs), same as Sara and Mao's surname in Macross Zero.
- When the guys are practising their routine for the concert, they're copying Isamu Dyson's hand routine from Macross Plus.
- The new version of the "Do You Remember Love"'s theme song from the Macross movie used in the credits.

more I'm sure...

Anyone have any idea what happened to episode 2? I don't even see a raw out for it yet, let alone any fansubs. Some kind of holiday? Or was episode 1 merely a preview and the actual series airs at a later date?

Any info would be appreciated if you have it.

MrSatan Feb 17, 2008 06:07 PM

hikarub Apr 13, 2008 08:47 AM

Well, episode one was released last week by only one or two fansub groups....probably because everyone thought it would be the same as the one released as the promo back in December. Though it's similar, there are quite a few differences.

For one, the new episode one includes the OP:
YouTube Video

you can also see a little more into the personalities of Alto and Sheryl:
Spoiler:
Alto comes off as cool but a bit headstrong too. His showboating during the concert nearly ends in disaster when he accidently knocks Sheryl off the stage (he manages to catch her though).

Sheryl comes off as a total bitch. She smiles lovingly at Alto's group on the way to her dressing room, then rips into the accompanying Kathy Glass and demands why some kids are back stage when nobody's supposed to be there. When Ms. Glass tells her they will fly as accompaniment to her performance, she calls them amateurs. Even when Ms. Glass tells her they are from Macross Frontier's Elite school she doesn't care...

As there are extras, of course a few scenes from the promo were cut out too. Not that anyone will miss them really.
Spoiler:
They did cut out the ghost (unmanned) fighters debut though which was supposed to demonstrate that electronic brains in unmanned fighters or even missiles were affected by some form of jamming and were therefore unreliable in combat.

Another group has released episode two so I will probably catch that a little bit later on.

Episode 2, about 14:43. Alto and Ozma in car. Radio playing - Totsugeki LOVE HEART!!

Remember this song?

:D

Bigblah Apr 20, 2008 09:44 AM

That song's a good 15 years old, it must have sounded like Ace of Base - All That She Wants to Alto.

And that Nyan Nyan commercial is freaky because it really sounds like a Chinese restaurant ditty.

hikarub Apr 21, 2008 01:53 AM

Episode 3 was pretty good. More fleshing out the characters and seeing Altoh, Sheryl and Ranka's interactions is interesting and funny (the tuna buns LOL).

I can't wait to see more action coming up, though I was a bit surprised to see in the next episode preview....
Spoiler:
....that some Queadluun-Rau mecha appear. Are they enemies or perhaps part of Altoh's training?

Also:
http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/snapshot20080421142317.jpg

When Earth started it's colonization journeys, you can see in the pic all the expeditions that left in 2012. The MEGAROAD-01 can be seen, which supposedly was the mission headed by Hikaru Ichijo and Misa Hayase. On the other side is the MACROSS07. M-FRONTIER can be seen on the right. Amazing how they could launch all these colonies out in the same year. MEGAROAD-04 reached EDEN in the same year and sent its own colonies out in 2013. They must've had some amazing resources as well as Zentraedi technology to pull all that off. You can even see that one of Eden's expedition colonies is the M-GALAXY, the home of Sheryl Nome.

Now waiting for episode 4 somewhat impatiently.....

:tpg:

Vemp Apr 21, 2008 03:31 AM

Hi. Is there a lower-res encode of this anime? My PC has trouble playing the 1280x720 res videos, though I have CoreAVC installed, it's still slow.

Thanks.

hikarub Apr 21, 2008 01:27 PM

AiA & I-Z are currently releasing it in something like 704x396 res version (around roughly 174mb each I guess). The quality is pretty crisp and clear too, not like the promo 1st episode. Their episodes are in MP-4 format though so you'll need MpcStar to play the files.

Wow thanks hikarub! I'll test these out!

EDIT: Plays like charm. Thanks :)

hikarub May 1, 2008 11:56 AM

Episode 4 was pretty cool. Despite being mainly a training exercise for Altoh, the action was pretty intense and interwoven nicely with Ranka's side.

nnnnnnnnnnnope, I got nothin

Two comments:

1. Somebody on the design team has a profound love for San Francisco.

2. Why does Frontier have a bug up its butt over implants? Avoidance of a transparent society? Any nerds out there find backstory for this?

hikarub May 10, 2008 02:18 AM

The tuna:

In the beginning of the original Macross series, Hikaru and Minmay are trapped somewhere in the hold of the SDF-1 for several days. In order to survive they had to search for food and discovered a huge tuna fish floating around the zero-g cargo hold (they speculated that it must've been transported into space alongwith the SDF-1 when it tried it's fold system for the first time and accidently transported much of the island and surrounding sea with it). In one scene (or before I can't remember) where they enact a wedding (due to Minmay's belief that no one would rescue them and that they would die there) all that was left of the tuna was it's head sitting in a pan.

Maybe that's how they make soup. :D

Animechanic May 13, 2008 04:44 AM

Wow, I am loving this show so much. The whole thing is fanservice for those that saw the original Macross. It's got VF-25s that are strikingly similar to the VF-1, it's got Queadluun-Raus, it's got a grizzled awesome captain and bridge bunnies, and best of all, 100% less Minmei!!!

Bradylama May 13, 2008 01:27 PM

It also helps that the show is actually good. Shit is finally approaching realness, thank God. I wonder if the decked out guy in the preview is a controller of Vajra or just a Galaxy inhabitant with tons of implants.

hikarub May 15, 2008 06:18 AM

Looks like the next episode is gonna rock!! I can't wait to see some real action when the SMS and Pixies start smacking the Vajra around (or will it be the other way around?). Either way, this is another episode I can't wait to see!

Spoiler:
http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/snapshot20080515191120.jpg

Hey, is this the enemy or that weird shadowy guy referred to as "Mr. Gilra" by the President? Probably a bad guy, huh?

Any news on a soundtrack release for Macross Frontier? The song Ranka sings (a Sheryl number from the first episode) in episode 5 is stuck in my head now. I really want this song!!

Roku May 19, 2008 11:19 AM

Just out of curiosity, are there any groups besides Gattai and Anime in Action/Infinity Zero that are releasing this series quickly? These two are the fastest that I know of, but still take up to 5-6 days to make a release, but seeing the discussions I get the impression there may be a faster group that I'm not aware of.

hikarub May 19, 2008 11:53 AM

As far as I know, Gattai and AiA/I-Z are the fastest so far to release episodes. Shinsen Subs are also out there but they've been taking their time with their releases (they haven't even released episode 6 yet). Others here may be checking out the raws or something I guess.... (or maybe some one here is part of a subbing group? Either in translating or QC?)

Possible....but I guess I should also point out that there are clips of episode 7 out on youtube already. I'll probably wait for AiA/I-Z though.

Ramenbetsu May 20, 2008 01:52 AM

Macross F just hit holy shit awesome territory. I already have a theory about that mysterious crimson plane:
I think it and the pilot have something to do with the Megaroad-1 disappearing without a trace in the center of the galaxy. Since he seems human is aware of culture, I'm thinking he maybe a descendant of those on board MEgaroad-1. Maybe they found something to colonize/new technology etc at the center of the universe.

Well, I've gotten it from gg last night - for some reason they decided to sub it. Dunno if they'll do it again (and given their speed with the Geass releases I sure hope so). Prior to that, I was able to get a Chinese sub from a group called POPGO.

So episode 7 was full of awesome. Definitely my favourite so far in the series... Guess we'll slowly find out more about Ranka's past, but next week's episode seems to be fairly easy-going and light hearted.

PS:

I think I saw a NUNS on the side of his VF-27. Wasn't NUNS formed after Megaroad-1 leaving?

Bradylama May 21, 2008 07:20 AM

The Monster reminds me of how awesome a Battletech show would be. :sigh:

It also seems odd that they'd fold into Galaxy fleet, not actually see the Galaxy, then the previews show slice of life clips.

hikarub May 21, 2008 11:04 AM

I believe they only reached the area where the 6 Galaxy fleet ships defolded from in episode 6:

http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/snapshot20080521232351.jpg

I'm not too sure if they even know correctly where the M-GALAXY's position actually is due to the fold dislocation. Probably why they end up going back to the M-FRONTIER as in the episode 8 previews....

You mean this pic?

http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/snapshot20080521233646.jpg

Shit, I don't even know what NUNS is....care to enlighten? The nature and design of their aircraft are very similar to the SMSs variable VF fighters so I'm guessing they're some what related. I'm guessing they're from another Macross Colony Fleet. I don't think they have anything to do with the MEGAROAD-01 though....

And yes, the pilot of the crimson fighter is obviously related to or somehow connected to Ranka. He uses that silver harmonica to play a few bars from Ranka's "lost" song, the song that is her only memory from her life with the 117th Fleet. He could be a survivor from that fleet too. Maybe.

And why is the introduction to episode 7 so screwy? It mentions that M-GALAXY was the 21st Mass Colonization Fleet and was launched several years before the M-FRONTIER. But in the opening shot we see that amongst the original colony fleets that left Earth in 2012,
http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/snapshot20080521235245.jpg
the M-FRONTIER is clearly seen (right-hand side).

M-GALAXY isn't seen until after MEGAROAD-04 discovers and inhabits Eden:
http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/snapshot20080521235528.jpg
(M-GALAXY is seen above Eden moving away from the planet).

Something screwy going on here...... :eye:

Bradylama May 21, 2008 12:43 PM

Continuity errors? Sound the horn of Nerddor.

DesertEase May 21, 2008 02:47 PM

I believe NUNS stands for New UN Spacey(Spacy?). I think it was formed sometime during or after Macross7. Where I read this is slipping my mind.

hikarub May 23, 2008 11:26 AM

Well, I managed to answer my own question it seems...

The first Macross Frontier soundtrack will be released next month and seems to include all the songs so far featured in the TV series. A definite must-buy for me. I haven't been this excited about a soundtrack release since Haruhi and SEED Destiny.......speaking of which, did you all know that Aya Hirano and Rie Tanaka are featured in Macross F?

:oo

Aya Hirano and Rie Tanaka are two of the bridge bunnies. Rie is instantly recognizable (Suigintou hrhr), but Aya isn't using her Haruhi voice it seems.

One track title from that soundtrack really jumps out at me:

アイモ~鳥のひと

"Aimo ~ Tori no Hito". Bird Man. Sup Macross Zero :tpg:

Ha, didn't notice that actually. I was trying to figure something else out:

What is the difference between songs #10 アイモ and #21 アイモ~鳥のひと? I know that it was mentioned on the official website that the latter was played in episode 3 during Gilliam's funeral/sending off. I assume アイモ was the ED themes for episode 1 and 7, but both songs seem exactly the same...

hikarub Jun 9, 2008 01:40 PM

Well, Bigblah, looks like the bird human in the songlist was there for a reason. Episode 10 was a Macross ZERO episode!!

Spoiler:
The gang heads off to one of the tropical island ships for the filming of the Macross ZERO movie. Strangely enough, it's referred to in the episode as a "biographical film on Shin Kudo", the main protaganist in ZERO. The part of Sara is played by the Miss Macross winner, Miranda Meilin. Ranka only has a bit-part (as "Mayan girl A"), but after the director hears her sing "Aimo" on the cliff he decides to use her song for the movie instead of the song provided by Sheryl. As the original actress for the role is unavailable due to an accident, Ranka is then offered the role of Sara Nome's sister, Mao, as well.

A lot scenes from the original OVA are used with some subtle changes:

And it turns out someone isn't entirely human.....

I was kinda' hoping they were gonna say something about whether or not Sheryl was related to the Nome sisters, with them having the same surname and all....

And Ozma mentions how Ranka has gotten "Dr. Mao's" part. So after the events of ZERO, Mao left the Mayan islands to study? Interesting.........

Hmmmmm.........

Sakabadger Jun 9, 2008 08:37 PM

Due to interest in Frontier, I've been going back and watching the original series for the first time. It's quite interesting, what with all the rampant 80's-ness to it (I haven't seen so many seizure-inducing screen flashes in ages) and seeing all the things that Frontier is making references to. It's all quite fun and I look forward to finishing the rest of the series (already acquired Macross Plus) at some point.

The female protagonists kind of make me rage, though. I figured Minmay would be a nice cute girl, but she's actually kind of a jerk in a huge way. I guess it could be her age, but she has no delicacy with choosing her words around the company she's in. I find Misa to be much more preferable, but then again she's still hopelessly stuck on her first beau. Ah well.

More series need someone Focker/Global-esque. Awesome dudes.

Vemp Jun 10, 2008 06:13 AM

I'm looking for a torrent of the original series :( I haven't seen it in decade or so. If someone can find me some neat dvd rips, preferably not exceeding 200mb per episode, so that my interwebs can handle the size.

Ramenbetsu Jun 11, 2008 12:35 PM

Really great episode and I loved how it was all macross zero related. Been meaning to rewatch the ova.

MrSatan Jun 13, 2008 05:02 PM

i already completed 10 downloaded eps, ill watch them in batch, and give my opion about them, i just watched the first one and i enjoyed it alot

Bigblah Jun 14, 2008 11:27 PM

The newest chart-topping hit from Ranka Lee:

YouTube Video

I enjoyed that Macross Zero episode, although the fight scene looked really out of place (according to some people it was purposely done that way by a guest animator).

Bradylama Jun 16, 2008 12:23 PM

I see the film makers of Macross have taken to the Charlie Chan method of characterization.

Vemp Jun 17, 2008 12:52 AM

Episode 11 is late :(

Sakabadger Jun 17, 2008 01:50 AM

Didn't broadcast this week, that's why.

hey hikaru long time no see. good to have you back around here

hikarub Jul 3, 2008 12:16 AM

Any recommendations on a good fansub group? I was following AiA&I-Z's work but they're pissing me off with their late releases. They still haven't released episode 11 yet and 12 has been released by other groups already. I would like to stick with one group for any one series but it looks like I'm gonna have to switch now.

Can anyone recommend between the following? Chihiro; gg; and Lunar?

Thanks.

Animechanic Jul 3, 2008 12:19 AM

Hmm... I've been following Shinsen, but they are slow as hell too. Seconding hikarub's recommendation request.

Sakabadger Jul 3, 2008 01:00 AM

I'd go with gg (personal choice) or Lunar. Chihiro is definitely the speedsub variety of group, and while their work is okay (I guess) there are a number of weird errors that get through.

If you want consistency in your fansub from start to finish, though, I guess you should get Lunar since gg only started from episode 6 or 7 or so.

Loved episode 12. The singing scenes in Frontier are so well done and exciting (or in this case, extremely cute). It also made me glad that I went and watched the original Macross, since the end of the episode would've had a much lesser impact had I not.

Vemp Jul 3, 2008 04:30 AM

I used to follow AiA and then they cancelled it (summer schedule conflicts), so now I'm with Chihiro or Lunar, whoever comes first (Chihiro usually, and they have decent quality).

<+macross_noob> WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THE SINGING?! lol

hikarub Jul 4, 2008 12:36 PM

Thanks for the recommendations. I didn't know that AiA had cancelled their subs for this show. I guess I'll be going with gg then. Or Lunar. Guess it doesn't really matter...

MrSatan Jul 17, 2008 10:14 AM

i saw all eps until 10, and i must say, macross F rocks!
love how many reference it has to the other series(ep 1 rankas rescue)(miss macross)(macross zero) and while the music is not what i can say my fav(im a fire bomber guy) i enjoy it very much, love rankas Ninji-n Loves you yeah!(the carrot song!!!!)lol, it is the funniest macross too.

Bradylama Jul 20, 2008 08:57 PM

New episode is the best way to do a clipshow, I suppose.

Spoiler:
Loaded and eccentric Zentradi get the coolest toys

Bigblah Jul 25, 2008 01:05 PM

That was impressive, I was actually entertained by a recap episode.

MrSatan Jul 26, 2008 01:02 AM

recap? is there a recap?? lol, i have to continue my eps, got stuck on ep 10

Sakabadger Aug 3, 2008 06:41 AM

I almost raged hugely at episode 17.

Spoiler:
Macross Frontier is big on throwbacks and references to previous series, so when Ozma and Kathy started getting closer and he took a hit in battle and kept going, it set off major Focker vibes.

Thank goodness they didn't go that route, though. It would've been pretty awkward. And sad. :(

Sheryl got almost zero screentime last episode, so here's hoping she goes back to being an awesome force again soon.

Tails Aug 3, 2008 06:59 AM

Told off. You and everyone else on the planet got pineapple salad trolled. The guys back at the animation studio are probably laughing their asses off right now.

Animechanic Aug 26, 2008 12:29 AM

Oh fuck. After all that pineapple salad trolling
Spoiler:
they killed Michel. So sad now :(
And Nana-chan may have lost an eye too :(

Bradylama Aug 26, 2008 12:46 AM

So, am I the only one disturbed by the pin-up art on the Monster that Ranka flies around in?

Sakabadger Aug 26, 2008 01:18 AM

Nah, definitely not. You have to wonder what Ozma was smoking when he let that fly.

Bradylama Aug 26, 2008 04:43 PM

Also, I wonder how much emergency power went into Sheryl's spotlight?

Spoiler:
Killing off a major character tends to be the turning point, and hopefully it won't be for the worse. The preview sort of killed the suspense with the slice-of-life clips too. =/

And also, just when I thought we'd get some more, sweet monster action they just transitioned scene and I'm all like don't leave me hangin nigga

Bradylama Aug 30, 2008 07:36 PM

Episode 21:
Spoiler:
Flight pack Klan was fucking rad for the 10 seconds she got to kick ass.

And Ranka leaves! Putting future plot development into a potentially awkward phase.

MrSatan Sep 7, 2008 01:30 AM

im making my way back to the series, i just watched ep 17
gotta love the references to old series..
but im impressed, they actually use macross 7 songs!! my soul for you and try again, and i must say that the parts that are used feels like were written to bond with the music!
(well, im a macross 7 fanboy, but gotta admit the music fits perfectly)

hope it gets better and better!

just catch ep 20
Spoiler:
i cant believe it, michael dies, and in front of the person he loves, it got really emotional

BTW
now that the story is at the climax, i just noted a few things.
the influence of previous series in macross frontier is really high, i just got some points.

Spoiler:

-the obvious homanage like alto in a vf25 for the first time, or ranka in chinese outift, miss macross etc(this points to SDF macross)

-mao from macross zero is mentioned(so far) and have some involvement in the facts of the series

-Brare's vf27 interface although different in animation, works like Guld's vf21 in macross plus.

-the concept os sheryl being artificial artist(or idol) is just like sharon apple which actually is an artificial "being".
sharon and sherryl, both sounds similar.

- i thought that macross 7 references where limited to sherryls "listen to my song, and the obvious songs in the series, the influence is broader and bigger. Ranka's songs works similar to the "song energy" that is featured in macross 7 and this is an important key in the plot in both series.

macross frontier takes many concepts from older series, expand them, improve them and execute them all so seamless.

and im aware what you guys may think
"this guy have seen macross way too much " and the truth is YES I HAVE, lol

Bradylama Sep 28, 2008 02:37 PM

Show over! Kinda ridiculous. =/

Spoiler:
Once again the basic idea behind the show's conclusion is a bunch of fantastical hyperdimensional bullshit. It just felt way too over-the-top, and while I enjoyed all the omg cool stuff going on it just didn't feel like it had the impact it should have since the whole situation became a clusterfuck. For example, Julian releasing the limiters on the ghosts as a tie-in to Macross Plus, but then they just fly off and we never really get to see them do anything.

Once again, the monster was my favorite part. It just felt hard-fought, clumsy, and believably awesome compared to all the bone-crushing G-forces everybody else was pulling.

When they make the next Macross they need to go back and look at what made Superdimensional Fortress: Macross and Macross Plus so popular. No, not Linn Minmay, it was the social aspect. It's hard to identify with giant space monsters, and practically impossible to identify with a collectivistic bug society. The enemies just feel like foils when they used to be people, and that's why culture had such a significant impact, not some bullshit about fold waves.

Good ending overall, but the show could've been a lot better. Plus I didn't need to see Ranka naked. :gonk:

Bigblah Sep 29, 2008 01:28 PM

It was ridiculous and way over the top. By my third watching I ended up loving it, though. They crammed as much throwbacks to previous series as they could in those 24 minutes
Spoiler (highlight to read):
(Daedalus attack? Check. Isamu plane-hand? Check. Macross 7 song titles? Check. Nonsensical Macross Zero crap? uhhhh)

and it was all choreographed at a frantic pace, with a rocking song medley to boot.

Fuck you Tails this series was worth it

Sakabadger Sep 29, 2008 09:08 PM

The references to past Macross series had me nerding out.

Spoiler:
Alto tosses Sheryl a salute before heading out, a la Hikaru saluting Misa in Do You Remember Love. Sheryl end confirmed.

I thought it was a decent ending to a great series, but hopefully the upcoming movie will be a continuation of the story and not a remake. There are way too many lingering questions that can't go unresolved.

Forget Alto x Sheryl or Alto x Ranka. This is the real end to the love triangle:

just watched the ending, i like it a lot, but "owner" motive leave me complitely unguarded!
and the references to old series keep appearing.
there is a tribute to kakisaki in ep 24

hikarub Oct 20, 2008 09:11 PM

That was a pretty good series overall, and despite some faults I enjoyed it immensely. I'm happy they at least confirmed our suspicions regarding Sheryl's heritage:
Spoiler:
Cathy tells Ozma that amongst the documents found at the 117th fleet's remains was a letter to Dr Mao, informing her that her granddaughter had given birth to a baby girl. The mother had given the child her fold-quartz earrings.

Some questions though:
Spoiler:
1. Did Grace know at all when she chose Sheryl for her "experiment" that she was related to her mentor Dr Mao?
2. After Sheryl's parents died she was left abandoned and had to fend for herself. How did she still manage to keep those earrings with her?
3. What happened to all the Vajra in the end? They just left? "Oh here, take our planet. Have fun! Bye!!"...?!

All the same, it was a fun ride.

:D

Bigblah Oct 20, 2008 09:23 PM

Spoiler:
1. She knew who Sheryl was, or at least found out later, since in one scene she did talk about pitting the descendants of her former co-workers against each other. Or something like that.
2. Not a lot of details on that. Maybe she wasn't left alone for long.
3. They're still on the planet (presumably gathering around their newly headless queen) as signified by the presence of Ai-kun. Let's interbreeding fun time!

MrSatan Nov 11, 2008 01:48 PM

anyone knows if there is a plan for sequels, movies or ovas??
it the long run, i still want more macross, lol

Bigblah Nov 11, 2008 02:30 PM

Well, they're making a Macross Frontier movie.

Every Macross series gets turned into a movie. Whether in-universe or out of it.

Speaking about the music; Anyone know of a good website with detailed info on the soundtracks? Looking for Composer/Lyricist info for a few tracks on the Macross The Complete box set. Nearly have it all off the web but a few of the songs left from Disc 3. :(

Too bad the booklet is in Japanese, otherwise... :D

In case someone here is in the know these are the ones I need help finding!

Mari Iijima /Whisper of the Stars:
Mika Doi / Distantly Fading Memories:
Mika Doi / Memorable White Christmas:
Hiromi Tsuru, Miyuki Muroi & Run Sasaki / The Jingle Bells Have Gone:

EDIT: Nevermind, found the answer on rec.arts.anime.music

All are by Kentaro Haneda with lyrics by Akane Asa...Actually, nearly all of them are! ;)

Anyway, I have made a decent track listing and artist info txt file if anyone wants a copy.
