Funny Character Names in RPG's
Many RPG's, especially older ones, allow you to shamelessly use your character's name to form crude sight gags and puns. For example, back in the day of six-letter limits on names, I would often call at least one character "Goober." A friend of mine would call them "nobody" (in lowercase) to get lines like "Hey nobody!" With the advent of spaces and other advanced techniques, names like "an asshole" become possible.
So, would any of you care to share some of your funny or irreverent RPG names? Bonus points if you have an øldskül one with a six-character limit. |
I've named a main male character "Hero" before. At the time, I was young and didn't have any other names in mind.
As for seeing odd default character names in RPGs, "Butz" from Final Fantasy V still stands out. |
I always thought "Wedge" was kind of a strange name in the FF universe. Why would you name someone after the shape of a tool used to prop a door open?
Dragon Quest 8's thief-turned-Hero-worshipper Yangus has a pretty strange name too, especially in comparison to his comrades Jessica and Angelo. But I guess it works out in the end because...he's getting his own game, and they're not. |
i remember that i put in ff1, the fighter was yan(me) there was another called luke, han, leia, etc
|
Well, my friend and I had a fun idea. Navi was so annoying in N64, so we decided to choose the name, "Hey Listen!" in Legend of Zelda: Windwaker or whatever you call it.
"Hey Hey List, come here!" "Hey List!" The game provided many fun quirks. I suggest this name to anyone! |
Fayt Linegod.
I would like to meet the total hipster who thought that was a cool name. |
I remember naming Aeris "Shaq." It seemed appropriate.
The first time I played Chrono Trigger, I named the characters "Coop," "Floop," "Joop," "Zoop," "Poop," "Goop," and Magus. Magus was too cool to have a retarded name. Finally, I -ALWAYS- name the FF1 blackmage (and Vivi) "PZPZ." It is an ancient tradition dating to the early nineties, whose true origins remain a mystery. |
I named EVERYONE in Final Fantasy VII "Bob". The plot was more confusing than ever..
Bob: Bob, this isn't the end. Bob: Weren't you going to save the Planet? Bob: Shit! Bob, you oughtta know by now. Bob: ...That's all right. I'm not so different from you. Bob: That's easier to understand. It's you, Bob. Bob: So there it is, Bob. So I guess it'll be Bob, me, and... Then I also tried naming Cloud to "God" and Barret to "Mr.T". You all should try that one day. |
Suikoden V's Fuwalafuwalu... that's one wicked name.
|
"Master" and "Slave" work out to be hilarious name changes, as well as a whole bunch of others:
"boy!", "girl!", "filth", "trash", "scum", "you", brat", "love", "~", "<3", "=)", etc. Lots of the names in the FF series, really made me go like "what!?": Quistis, Rinoa, Zidane, Quina, and Yuffie in particular. I have to say "Poo" in Earthbound takes the cake. |

Once made my ex play FF VII and she named Aeris SlumDrunk, Red XIII Pussy, and Yuffi Pancakes. I like the Hey, Listen! idea |
Poo, from Earthbound is what immediately comes to mind. Oh and of course theres Teepo from Breath of Fire 3, I always found his name to be especially stupid sounding. The classic Butz from FF5, but I think they changed it to Bartz in the US release. Oh and Fayt was pretty damn bad too. There are plenty of others, but those are the most obvious... Oh and I hated Terra's japanese name too... Tina, just doesn't fit her and it reminds me of the word Tuna for some reason. >_>
As for those I renamed simply to amuse myself... I remember I named Aeris from Final Fantasy VII Butch this one time I played. I named Barret Mr. T for obvious reasons, and Cloud I just named "dude." |
I generally just name the main character after myself. I never really got that crazy with the names as I'd be with them for many, many hours and didn't want them to detract from the story.
As far as funny default character names go, Link and Cloud always amused because who in their right mind would name their son those names? Very lame. |

No one has mentioned "Genus" from Tales of Symphonia. Such a bad mistranslation; the poor kid must have been teased so much in his youth.

A long time ago me and all my buddies were playing FFVII "when it first came out" I had just gotten Vincent and was naming him then my friend said "hey I got a really cool name for him pass me the controller. He ended up naming Vincent Biddy Boo to be funny and I hadnt saved in a long time =p so he remained Biddy Boo for the whole time lol.
|
Heh, I was such a square as a kid, I never named my characters bizzare names, but actual, real names.
But here's some I can think of off the top of my head:
I'll probably think of more in a minute, but that's a decent start, eh? |
I would end up naming my characters "penis" "vagina" "cunt" "bitch" "nigger" and "ass" just for the hell of it. Of course I never did this the first time through, but there were games like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger where you couldn't resist.
It was quite immature, but naming Lucca as "ass" and naming Crono as "penis" made some pretty interesting outcomes. Ass: Come on penis, we have to save vagina! Then again there's those wonderful times in Earthbound where you'd see somebody ask something which would sound so much more hilarious if you had a crude name to go along with it. The beginning of Earthbound immediately comes to mind. "Are you serious? You're going outside? At this time? Penis, are you nuts?" ='D Oh MAN that was awesome. |

Hence why I said "FF universe." I've got no idea about a Wedge or Biggs in Star Wars, as I'm not a fan of Star Wars in the least.
|
I once named Shiva in FF8 to "My Bitch"
Reached the end of the Fire Cave and Ifrit appears. "My God! They've got my bitch!" That's right we do, and she ALWAYS swallows for Squall. |
I don't remember what game it was, but I once named all my characters into numbers, because I was too lazy to read their katakana names, and there was no english input.

I remember my friend naming the GFs of FFVIII appropriate monikers: Shiva - Icebitch Ifrit - Hellkitty Quetzacoatl - Thunderbird Alexander - Holymecha! Leviathan - Watersnake Cactaur - Spikeboy etc. "Kill them all, hellkitty!" |
In FFVI, my cousin an I named all the charactrs after ours and our friends cats.
the funny part was after the peace talk and meal with the Emperor, the characters get supisious and and say things like 'i smell a rat', 'we better search the place' and 'leave no stone unturned' he found that funny seeing our kitties wanting to go rat hunting in a FF game. |

Anyway, I was playing Harvest Moon once and I named the cow after my best friend's girlfriend. She wasn't that happy. |
I've always named my Harvest Moon animals after friends.
At VGExpo in Dallas last August, I played a game of SSBM with characters named "Coq" and "Wang". |

Ifrit: Firefox Quetzalcoatl: Thunderbird Siren: Songbird Diablos: darkd (Dark daemon, as it ends in "d" like UNIX daemons...I slay myself sometimes) With more open-source jokes to come as I acquire the remaining Guardians. Oh, almost forgot. On the topic of weird original names, I win. |
I always found Tifa to be a pretty odd name, especially the way Marlene says it in AC. Names like Vincent, Yuffie, Cid, and even Cloud could pass off for real names (if the latter had hippie parents), but Tifa doesn't seem to be derived from anything (it spells out like it was short for Tiffany, but it isn't pronounced that way).
The names in FFT are about the most bizzare I've heard. I'll have to pull out the names from Gamefaqs or something. |
I will always remeber my one friend's Final Fantasy VIII save file. He had Squall, Rinoa, and Zell in the party. His Squall was named after him, he left Zell's name alone, but he had his sister name Rinoa for him. She called her "BadGirl." Seriosuly, I was choking (and still am) with laughter. Its so ridiculous, its like Rinoa is a dog who jut shit inside the house: "No!, NO!, BAD GIRL!!"
|
When I played FFVIII for the second time I named the characters after the FFVII chacters but since we can change only Squall, Rinoa and Angelo it wasn't really that cool.
Usually in my first time play I leave the original names, but when replaying the game I change everybody's name. One I couldn't stand was Ramza from FF Tactics, what a ugly name, so everytime I played it I changed the name. |

Fayt's an okay name--it's Leingod I have a problem with...... I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Wakka. Wakka wakka wakka |
Psh, Wakka's too easy.
Moving a little ways out of RPGs (but not too far) Advent Children had some out of place names with Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo. It's kinda like playing the "Which Words Don't Fit" game -- Cloud, Zack, Yazoo. |

And I agree about the AC names--especially Yazoo. I keep thinking it's a new search engine or something...... And I don't know how I forgot these: Reinbach Scholtenheim (I, II, III, IV) Maas, Mace, Meese, Mose, Moose--just say them aloud in order. It's a good chuckle. YAY Suikoden! |

Awesome game as well, my favorite story in an RPG. - WraithTwo - |

the lamest rpg name in history would be Benjamin from Mystic Quest series.
Dont know why, but I never feel comfortable changing rpg characters name. |
PALMER! THAT IS IT!
|
Now that I think about, Chrono Trigger's "Marle" is a strange name for a girl to have. It sounds like a cross between Carl and Mary. Granted, "Marle" is just her pseudoname, but still. Think of something better!
|
Mmm, I normally never change character names in RPGs, but I've just started replaying FFVII PC today (am currently in Kalm) and I've renamed Aeris to 'BITCH,' seeing as how I hate her and all. That name sure leads to some funny moments. "What did you do to BITCH?!" I've always renamed Red XIII to Nanaki too, as I'd rather he be called by his real name.
As far as actual character names go, I think the worst name ever in the history of RPG history should go to Mash (FFVI). Ugh, who the hell thought up that name? Other stupid names include most of the cast list from Star ocean 3, Genius and Refill from Tales of Symphonia (I prefer their American names, Genis and Raine), and Butz/Bartz from FFIII. |
Shadow Hearts' Roger Bacon. very stupid >.>. That name made me stop playing it any further.
Another name would be Ryuudo Geohound. Heh , you know very damn well they wanted to call him FOXhound =/. |
Geohound was Ryudo's occupation, not his last name. If I remember correctly, I don't think anyone in that game had a last name, execpt for Pope Zera Innocentius. There's an odd name for you. Especially with what happens in the end.
Schtolteheim Reinback III and IV from Suikoden were hilarious. |
Ulf from Grandia III. It's a name that I'd probably scream out if I fell, or something.
|
First time I ever played through FFVII, I had just finished watching "Beasties", so I tried to name Cloud, "DepthCharge" (bugger off, I was 11), but it didn't fit, so I ended up naming him "DepthChat". It was simply the most ridiculous name ever. Then I named Barret, "Unknown", because I couldn't think of anything. At the next naming I left them all alone. Wow, that was a really dumb playthrough, now that I think of it.
|
Went over to a friends house one day, he was playing FFIX. Apparently he had named Garnet Sextoy. Surprised me when I saw it on screen.
Also I thought that the main characters from Secret of Mana had wierd names. Randi = Boy Purim = Girl Popoie = Sprite Don't really think they are wierd now though. Like the Bob thing though from FFVII. Its like they all have split personalities. |

And considering Roger Bacon is a true genious.
|
After watching the intro to DQVIII, I named the main hero "Sqrlkila."
|
My first time round on FFVII I called Cloud Bumhead, Barret Nigga, Aeris Bitch, Yuffie Bitch 2, Tifa Lesbo Face, Cait Sith Shithead, Vincent George Michael, Cid Bummer. Hilarity ensued when Aeris shouted Bumhead and Tifa said Chill out Nigga.
Well I thought I was funny.... what? SHUT UP! I WAS 14!!! Damn you all. Oh and I agree with Chato, Roger Bacon is an absolutely awful name for an RPG character. In all honesty though, I always like to play through an RPG now with the default names for true immersion. Have to mention something that does piss me off though, the way that in Kingdom Hearts 2 no one refers to Sora, Goofy and Donald as "you guys" or something, they always say all of their names when their talking to them. Its never "Thank you guys/everyone", its always "Thank you Sora, Donald and Goofy". Stupid game. (Just ganked lvl 99 on Sora and killed Sephiroth today, was fun :D) |
Aside from Earthbound's Poo, there was a character in Dark Cloud whose name was Pike but the font made it look like "Dike." So for the longest time I thought his name was Dike.
|
"Jack Russel" from Radiata stories, why the main character have to be a dog's breed? I really don't understand the one who think this name.
"Wakka" the most stupid name ever in FF,lol. "Rosa" umm... ketchup girl from FFIV. |
