Sports you play

What sports do you actively take part in? How high a level do you play at, or do you play just for fun? What is your favourite sport to play?

Personally, I love football (soccer). I wouldn't say I'm particularly good, but I tend to play with my mates at least once a week, as well as us being signed up to a weekly 6-a-side league run by the university. Our team kinda suck, we're 3rd bottom out of 12 teams after about 15 games and might have even fallen a place after the tables get updated for this Wednesday, but it's all pretty fun. It's pretty much the only sport I play these days and therefore naturally my favourite, although I occasionally go swimming (only recreationally though). Also used to enjoy tennis and somewhat cricket but I haven't played either for quite a while now.

I have played baseball since T-ball. That's around the age of five, and I have played ever since then. Right now, I play for the local travel Colt League team, as well as my JV high school team. I play first base, so there's always a lot of action. I'm a pretty good hitter, as well, and I bat fourth in the order. Such a relaxing game, really.

I also play a little bit of golf in the summer. My gradpa always takes me out, and he's a really good golfer. He was scratch, up until recently, and he still maintains a sub-10 handicap. It's always fun to play with him because he is so knowledgable, and can teach me a lot.

Iwata Mar 2, 2006 08:51 PM

I actively played baseball from junior high until the end of highschool. When I came to the states for Uni, the fact that baseball is seasonal, really put a damper on wanting to get involved, so i just said fuck it.

I still practice Judo and go to meetings once a week and will be participating in a local competition in shizuoka city when i go back to japan for the summer.

knkwzrd Mar 2, 2006 09:45 PM

I've played a little first base myself. Not on a team currently, but in the summer I try to organize as many pick-up games as possible.
I recently tried squash and was surprised at how fun it is. I'm usually not much for racquet sports, especially when you have to pay to use courts, but that's a damn entertaining game.

BucPride Mar 2, 2006 10:23 PM

I played baseball for 7 years way back when. Played the outfield and 1st base one year. Then, a year before high school, I switched to hockey for two years playing defensemen. During HS, I played football, switching from TE, LB, to DE.

Hell, I play baseball in the spring (from March until July), in the fall (from September until November), and I practice and train most of the winter.

samari Mar 2, 2006 10:53 PM

My main sport I play is tennis. Haven't gotten a chance to play much of it recently (since I live out in the middle of nowhere), but I'll jump at any chance I have to play. I was on my high school's varsity team, and I consider myself a decent player..still have alot to work on though =)

I also play golf every couple of months. It's supposed to be relaxing and fun, which it usually is, but since I have trouble hitting the ball up in the air sometimes, it can get frustrating. But I still enjoy it, since I always golf with friends or family.

When i was in HS, we played year-round and practiced from 3pm to 9pm everyday during the school days and on non-school days we practiced from 10 am till 9 pm. It is the reason japanese people are good at baseball, every school's baseball club dedicates their life to the sport.

Wow, I thought I played a lot. Now that is dedication.

Robiz Mar 3, 2006 01:12 AM

During high school I played football as a left tackle. Had some of my best memories from high school playing my freshman year.

One of the best would have to be during my freshman year. We were really getting our ass's kicked bad, I mean really bad. The offensive line just wasn't getting it done at all. I was best friends with our QB at the time and I couldn't help but feel pretty bad as he had been put on his ass the last two plays in a row.

He took a really big hit and I can remember him jumping up and running back to the huddle covered in mud, with a big chunk of dirt sticking out from his helmet. He looked at his wrist band and got really wide eyed and said "I can't read this, somebody else call a play" I leaned over and called a running play on 3rd and god only knows. I just figured it was best to not kill the man. Despite our humiliating defeat I think that's the best story I have from my 4 years playing. Makes me laugh every time.

These days I really don't play many sports outside of pool and bowling.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 3, 2006 01:18 AM

Oh man I love pool. At my dad's house, we have a table where the dining room table should be, and I play all of the time. I got a nice MacGregor (I think. Something with a shamrock logo) and have been working on my game the last few months. It seems to be paying off quite nicely, too, as I can hustle a bit and have made over $100 in the last month from it.

Synthesis Mar 3, 2006 01:14 PM

When I was in high school I played soccer and basketball extensively, but now that I'm in college it's really difficult to juggle sports, as well as your major/emphasis courses. So I'm currently waiting until I get a semester of classes I can easily pass so I'll have enough extra time to devote myself to at least one of the two sports I play.

JackTheRipper Mar 3, 2006 03:00 PM

I used to play baseball. I wasn't too bad either. Now I run track, but my main focus is tennis. I've been playing for about 8 or 9 yearsand I'm going to hold one of the singles spots on the varisty team soon.

Fire On Ice Mar 3, 2006 03:15 PM

I play hockey. I play as a ceneter with two of my teams and both wing and defence with the other.. I was the Captain of my HS team all three years I played and I am now playing for my university. I also am part of a boys house league team and a women's shinney league, I referee and I used to coach, but it took up too much of my time. I love to wacth and cheer on my local NHL team, the Ottawa Senators (who are doing very well this season). I also play soccer whenever I get the opportunity and I tried to get into rugby a little while back but it never really caught on with me.

it may sound like I'm bragging and maybe I am a little but I'm allowed considering hockey is the only thing I actually can do well.

Rocca Mar 3, 2006 03:23 PM

Have been playing basketball in organized inter city leagues for the past 10 to 12 years. I've been coaching 8 to 10 year olds since I was 12 years old (just real mature is all), won 10 provincial championships, MVP of the year twice, always plays in the All-Star games (just charity games to put on a good show). It's fun. I play just about every other sport, but for the time being, basketball is the only one I love and can focus on. I also dunk like there's no tomorrow. :)

Musharraf Mar 3, 2006 03:28 PM

Football/soccer. I'm not particularly good either, but it's always for fun, right? I'd love to play rugby, but it's very unpopular in Germany. There are many homosexual people who play volleyball here, though!

Shinimegami Mar 3, 2006 03:33 PM

Soccer!!!

Ryuu Mar 3, 2006 07:28 PM

I'll shoot hoops on occasion with friends.

I love to play tennis and golf with friends as well, it's fun. I'll play soccer/football every so often, but I'm not as good as I use to be...

Little Brenty Brent Brent Mar 3, 2006 07:38 PM

I played soccer and baseball from when I was four until shortly after highschool, at which point I didn't really have the time to invest in them anymore and stopped playing more than recreationally. I was involved in track and field and cross-country running throughout those years as well.

I wrestled for quite a few years, but stopped earlier in highschool 'cause I started to get cramped for time with other extracurricular activities, like acting and student leadership classes.

I never played hockey competitively as a kid, but I did skate a lot and played recreationally with buds. The last couple years I got talked into playing roller hockey with them, and though it was alright I miss skating on ice so I'm going to try to get back into that this year, if I have the time.

Son of Wiseness Mar 3, 2006 08:01 PM

I'm on a team for Soccer. But I play basketball/football of my own free will. For baseball though I go to games and watch them on televison, just the White Sox though.

kiseki Mar 3, 2006 10:56 PM

Tennis is my favorite sport, and I have been playing it for almost five years.
I only play singles because I suck in communicating with my partner, especially when he/she misses after a long rally; those mistakes make me want to smack him/her in the face with my raquest.

However, I enjoy almost all kinds of sports which includes no interaction of bodies. I just don't want to get hurt while playing sports.

dragonraver Mar 4, 2006 06:01 AM

I used to swim for my high school team, but the coach "corrected" my kick for breaststroke. Part way into that season, my knee was hurting pretty badly, so I stopped swimming for the team, and went to the doctor. From there, I was told to lay off competitve swimming for a while and so I'm just a rec. swimmer now, as I'm not supposed to push myself for competition swimming yet.

I also used to play badminton for the high school but since swimming and badminton were in the same season, I stopped playing competitively for swimming. I still play sometimes, but my knee's been bothering me.

I've only been playing Tennis for about two years. I'm not bad, though I'm not amazingly great either. I love playing doubles, I always find myself playing doubles more often than singles - I guess it's because you don't have to cover such a wider area by yourself and if something happens you can blame the other person lol.

I agree to your firts point, where in doubles, you don't have to move much as you will do in singles. But when you go to a state/sectional/national level, doubles becomes pretty difficult. So it really depends on the level you play, I guess.

In your second point, I will also play doubles if I can blame my partner. I don't play doubles because I CAN'T DO THAT!!!!!

Timberwolf Mar 5, 2006 08:06 PM

Basketball is my favourite sport to watch and to play. I love the game too much. I don't even need a hoop to enjoy basketball. If I have a bad day (or a good day), I can just take my ball, go somewhere, just dribble around and freestyle -- it always makes me feel better.

I also like track (sprints). There's nothing quite like powering your way down the track as fast as you can.

Last year I played doubles for my school team with this totally inept fool. He was literally afraid of the net. When I was serving, he would gradually keep backing up to the baseline during the point. We had to run a lot of laps for that. When we got farther in the season he got a little better, but it was still annoying to have to play with him.

I prefer singles over doubles, and I'm glad that's what I'll be playing this year.

Spyer Mar 5, 2006 08:24 PM

Uh.... I'm really into golf. Once the golf season actually starts, I go to the driving range close to every second day or every third day. This year, I have to get a yearly membership at the golf club because honestly, I'm good, but I get really frustrated when I can't hit the ball straight all the time and it ends up going on the course next over and the people get really upset. Oh, the fun and crazy fun of golf.

I also play badminton quite a bit. Singles isn't my thing because I'm really clumsy on my feet and I can't move fast enough, but I'm great when it comes to mens doubles or mixed doubles since I have a really long reach and a really hard smash.

Mephista Mar 6, 2006 09:03 AM

I don't really play any sports these days, but I used to play a lot of field hockey and tennis. I also used to swim at a fairly reasonable level.

RABicle Mar 6, 2006 10:13 AM

I'm a pretty fistworthy field hockey player. I don't know what level I'll be playing at exactly though because the season hasn't started and I've moved away from home and will be re-graded so to speak at my new club. Before I left though the A1s side asked me to play for them. That's town level I guess. Above that is regional level and then playing for your state.

I used to play cricket but I've decided to play again next season because I just get too bored over summer. I'm pretty laughable at cricket and expect to play in the bottom division.

But realy I'll kick around any ball that's kicked too me. I've played Aussie rule before and I'm thinking of signing up for the student village soccer tourneyment. Should be fun.

Yunnie Mar 13, 2006 05:53 PM

I played soccer when I was in high school and loved it. But after my two surgeries my doctor warned me that I'm not supposed to run anymore, which means I won't be able to play soccer for the rest of my life... Oh well, at least I got to play it when I was able to.

Badminton and ping-pong would be the only things that I can do so far, and swimming, if that also counts as sports.

JackTheRipper Mar 13, 2006 05:56 PM

Bah this sucks. I'm playing in a Long Island regional tennis tournament this weekend and I get stuck playing this kid that I know is better than me. When play at the same tennis place on Wednesdays. I'm going to need a miracle and some kick ass shots to pull this off.

It's better to play with someone who's good. That way, you can make yourself play better too.

I shoot hoops on occasion, and I really like baseball. Too bad none of my friends are into sports. I don't play that often, but it's fun when we set something up as a group. I also like badminton, skating and skiing. Cycling is awesome too. One day, I might do an across-the-country thing, but not anytime soon.

Gumby Mar 13, 2006 06:23 PM

I play tennis when weather permits and I'm a swimmer.

stormshadow Mar 13, 2006 06:34 PM

Slow pitch softball for the win. I used to play baseball and was a catcher years ago. My knees can't take catching anymore though. So now I play in the outfield and drink beer between innings.

nazpyro Mar 14, 2006 10:37 AM

I'm a baller. Basketball is my favorite sport. I like to play it, I like to watch it, I like to comment on it. "I love this game" truly applies here.

I also play soccer. I've played that since kidnergarten. Now, in college, I just play soccer and basketball in intramurals. Good stuff.

And finally, I picked up racquetball as a class for this, my last semester.

elwe Apr 16, 2006 03:11 PM

I haven't been playing too many sports lately. However, I used to run on the track and cross country team for three years. For track, I did long distance running all three years and hurdles for two years. I never was good at it, but hey--I had fun! There's nothing quite like standing at the starting line, waiting for the gun to go off, and then running your hardest, not letting so-and-so pass you.

Right now, I occassionally play soccer and badminton for fun. :p

Shoeless Apr 20, 2006 09:31 PM

Play golf twice a week in a league, and I play on a softball team with buddies.

In High School I played basketball and golf.

Expertgamer Apr 21, 2006 10:25 AM

I play volleyball. Indoors. I have aquired championship twice in 3 years which isn't bad at all!

Every once a year there's a beach volleyball tournament and I participate of course. ^_^ The whole neighbourhood signs up and there are different matches between several teams. Ah good times... ^_^

I also love to play softball. I don't know but I just like to play it. We only play it at school because there isn't a softball club in the neighbourhood. =/

Third thing I also like to do is swimming. Not much as I did in the past though... Hope the summer's hot enough this year to swim in the river next to our village... Last year was too cold.

Last thing is karting! It's so fun. I have done it twice though... but it just rockz! Too bad is the fact that it is very expensive... Ouch. But other than that, it's just cool!

Battle_CRY Jun 2, 2006 08:57 PM

I played soccer in my grammar school days, apparently I don't now. I played tennis and volleyball in high school. I play club basketball and some golf whenever I have time (I suck horribly and slice the ball every time lol). Next year, hoping to be in the table tennis club, MMA club and Kendo Club. so yea...it's sort of a change from high school!!

Gratch Jun 4, 2006 09:35 AM

I played soccer & rugby in high school, soccer all through college, and I still play on some adult league teams. I also play quite a bit of racquetball.

If ping-pong counts, I'm a witch at that too.

Locke Jun 4, 2006 09:44 AM

I play quite a few sports - well, not regularly, but I try to as much as I can..

Obvously hockey - I've been playing my whole life. Heck - I could skate before I could walk! When I play (either pickup or on our program's intramural team), I'm usually found on the blue line.

That's probably the sport that I play the most regularly - but I'll play anything if the oppertunity arises, frisbee football, cricket, basketball, baseball, etc... I'm game for anything :)

Fire On Ice Jun 4, 2006 11:31 AM

I play football and soccer recreationally whenever I'm actually in shape enough to be decent. I suck at football, I'm ok with soccer though.

han89 Jun 12, 2006 03:50 PM

i used to be a professional swimmer but i left the professional side of swimming to play basketball. i played it on a school team level and a club level, and last year, i started playing volleyball on a school team as well.

as for non teams sports, i run a lot and especially when i have time.

HazelGuy Jun 21, 2006 08:48 AM

Tennis for me, my local club has both indoor and outdoor courts so we can play all year round. I only play casually and in the club tournaments since I don't have time to compete at any higher level, but tennis is a lot of fun, its an easy way to pass time and keeps you fit as hell.

Except for that astro-turf they have on the indoor courts, that hurts like a bitch when if you trip over on it.

I'm a singles player too, doubles never really was my thing.

han89 Jun 21, 2006 08:52 AM

I hate when we play double at school. If your partner isn't someone you trust, i don't think, how strong you may both be, that you can win the match.

SemperFidelis Jun 21, 2006 02:15 PM

I ran track and cross country for three years now even though I suck pretty bad. I throw a nice javelin though at 130ft average. Usually can snag 3rd place or so.

I don't mind playing doubles, its just that I prefer singles to doubles. At high level play its a lot more indepth, but its not horrible, I'd rather play doubles because many of the courts are full than not play at all.

darksage6790 Jul 23, 2006 09:26 PM

tennis is my main sport at high school level. im a decent player but cant really play singles basically because i played this year and last year in doubles. my doubles partner is good. we won like 70% of our matches

but other than tennis i do cross country but im not great at it and i did werstling for 1 year

electric_eye Jul 24, 2006 03:42 AM

I play 5-a-side football for fun. That's not to say it doesn't get competitive though, there are people who play who demand that others MUST play well. The level of players can vary, and sometimes because I am not the type to have played football since very young, I struggle. It's important I get the exercise though.

Rosencrantz Aug 9, 2006 07:23 AM

i play soccer when i can, everytime, everywhere, with anybody else.

goldeneye2131 Aug 9, 2006 10:06 PM

Baseball....baseball is all I play, I get on the field whenever I can, mostly just to hit around and shag fly balls with friends...I'm not very good at hitting, so it's frustrating sometimes, but I enjoy myself nonetheless...

Dyesan Aug 10, 2006 11:25 AM

Tennis, Table Tennis, Airsoft, Dodgeball, and Ultimate Frisbee.

Manny Biggz Aug 10, 2006 10:55 PM

I might catch some flak for this, but I do a sorta backyard wrestling thing. Well it's really only because we don't have access to a ring, but 6 of my friends were professionally trained, and the rest of us learned through them. We don't use all the crazy weapons, and tables those other backyard feds do, and we tend to do a lot of comedy stuff. I mainly do it for fun, but I also like watching at old matches when I do good preformances, and put a big smile on my face. I might go all the way with it, and become a pro...

zergkiller Nov 4, 2006 07:08 AM

Roller blading it IT.

Go rollerblading twice a week. No stunts, basic stuff

Unforgiven Nov 24, 2006 01:37 AM

I play badminton once a week but I'm trying to find more places to play around here. Sadly, they aren't much options. :( I wonder why its so dead compared to tennis though, its such a great sport.I'm also playing tennis during summer with my brothers and a few friends. Rarely.

Fiddlegoof Nov 29, 2006 11:26 PM

Yeah yeah! bball is where it's at. But lacrosse is by far the superior. It's like hockey...but with balls! ;)
I ski lots as well, and surf in the summer. I don't know what i'd do if it wasn't for sports.

Vemp Dec 5, 2006 11:45 AM

I USED to play basketball. I was actually part of our highschool varsity team, and in college in our engineering division team. And then I got lazy.

Is billiards a sport? I used to play that too.

Osnap pilipino basketball. Playing on the rocky streets/floodwaters in tsinelas (slippers). Hardcore skills! :p

I'm not too good at billiards. It's fun, but I don't get to practice a lot.

I posted already about basetball, soccer, and raquetball, but I didn't mention futsal (indoor soccer), martial arts and... gymnastics. ¬_¬ I was on a squad my sophomore year of college.

JackTheRipper Dec 6, 2006 10:05 PM

I guess this counts as a sport.. I run winter track. I'm pretty good. Can run a quarter mile in 58 seconds.

The Wise Vivi Dec 12, 2006 11:56 PM

Tennis is the best sport ever for me. I love it so much that I have played in a few tournaments. Haven't done very well in those though....:( . But I keep practicing and hopefully enter into some more tournaments in the future. I have just been too busy to enter them lately. My next favorite sport if Squash which I have just recently learned to play. Me and a friend of mine play two times a week and he has taught me very well. I can't believe how intense that game can get!
