Opoona

This was composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, and it is one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard from him. There's a lot of variety in musical style here. Also, contrary to the cartoony style of the game, there are a lot of great soft, fantastical, and somber tracks that make use of many types of instruments and samples. I hope this gets a soundtrack release.

orion_mk3 Feb 26, 2008 11:35 PM

Someone over at Soundtrack Central pointed out that the game did extremely poorly over in Japan; I hope that doesn't torpedo any album plans (Hell, Deltora Quest got the full three-disc treatment!). I'd also like to see who wrote which tracks.

Still, the music is great stuff. Lots of electronics compared to the last few Basiscape projects, with a fabulous main theme and a ton of personality. I highly recommend the rip.

Kaleb.G Feb 27, 2008 05:09 AM

So Basiscape did work on this as a team? That would explain things. I thought, for instance, op02_04 sounded a lot like a Namiki track.

eriol33 Feb 27, 2008 10:05 AM

agreed, Opona is one of Sakimoto's (and basiscape's) score. The main theme is exceptionally beautiful. One of the best I listen since FFTA2. I hope they will release an OST, it's sad the game didn't sell well. But who knows, maybe the english version will get better reception.

Arcubalis Feb 27, 2008 01:24 PM

It'd be cool if we could do an interview. Are there music samples available anywhere other than through game clips?

DarkRavenX Feb 27, 2008 01:47 PM

There is a full rip available. I'll upload later if I find the time, but could someone else try to beat me to it? I'm getting ready to head to work now and I'm not really sure if I'll have the time until later tomorrow.

orion_mk3 Feb 27, 2008 03:57 PM

I have the rip as well. I have some time on my hands, so I'll try a re-upload (to save bandwidth on the site I got it from originally).

The fact that it's a Basiscape score is one of the reasons I want a release, so I can see who wrote which tracks (they've always been rather good at doing that). I'm not familiar enough with the other composers' styles to be able to tell what they did by ear.

Thanks. This stuff is great.

punkmaggit Mar 3, 2008 11:42 AM

Thanks orion_mk3. This sounds great!

Dhsu Mar 7, 2008 05:36 AM

Unfortunate name, but great soundtrack! Made me want to fire up VS and FFT more than once.

Argentis Mar 24, 2008 06:53 AM

Fantastic music, tragic that it isn't being officially released anytime soon.
Since the game is out tomorrow, will it be possible to compile a more accurate tracklist for the rip? (putting the music in some kind of in-game order)

I second this; it would make it much easier to put tracks up for SotW and the BSC. Unfortunately, I don't own or have access to a Wii (otherwise I'd do it myself, since the game looks fun).

Argentis Mar 25, 2008 04:49 AM

Fare enough.
I have no idea if Opoona will reach UK, otherwise I'd happily do it (as we as the case if i had a Wii) :/

Arcubalis Mar 27, 2008 11:20 PM

The game and the soundtrack are both amazing. I'm surprised by how much fun it is.

To tease you guys, we got an interview with Sakimoto-san specifically about his work on Opoona. Be sure to check the site in the coming days for it.

ZiggyGo Mar 28, 2008 12:41 AM

That's good to know Arcubalis. I look forward to reading the interview. I was interested in playing the game myself but haven't gotten around to picking it up. The music is absolutely beautiful though.

Taisai Mar 28, 2008 01:15 AM

Arcubalis, I love you. And you're actually one of the few persons who doesn't ask predictable and generic questions.

I really appreciate that.

I think it's a matter of passion. A lot of journalists who cover this stuff are gamers but not fans of game music, and they get stuck covering composers without being particularly interested or informed. I've always enjoyed game music, and having written for some general gaming audiences writing game reviews, I learned there's nothing I'd rather be doing than writing about game audio.

I have a lot of surprises in store for you guys. I hope you caught the Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid), Masafumi Takada (Killer7, No More Heroes), and Nobuo Uematsu interviews recently!

squaretex Mar 28, 2008 08:35 AM

Great news to hear, Arcubalis. :)

I picked up the game yesterday myself, but haven't started it yet. Not sure when I can start, either, so I'm not sure if I can be much help on the renaming front.

But in either case, how do we want to do this? I was of the idea that once we discover what rip track goes where, we can post a renaming string, something like this:

ren "cp03.brstm.mp3" "99 I Really ADORE This Track.mp3"

...that's just an example. ;) But really, I'd be extremely interested to find out where exactly that lovely tune plays.

In the end, there should be enough material to put together into one big batch file.

Arcubalis Mar 28, 2008 02:32 PM

I wish I had been doing that. It sort of slipped my mind, and I'm already far along in the game. I figure it would be like, "Battle," "Boss Battle," "Tokione 1," "Tokione 2," etc. The tracks are actually in clumps of where they appear so it shouldn't be so bad.

squaretex Mar 31, 2008 08:57 AM

WHEW...at long last, I think my task is complete! :D

On a side note, those who have been enjoying the gamerip have noticed that there are two versions of several tracks. I'll be denoting the second versions as "alternate takes" with a 900-numbering system.

Thanks! :D

I've just updated the post with more track names. I'll do it there from now on, and just make new posts with specific questions about the tracks.

Speaking of which...has anyone found a use for the op01 tracks? I don't recall coming across them in Tokione yet. It's been a busy week, so I haven't spent as much time with the game as I'd like.

orion_mk3 Apr 2, 2008 12:57 PM

The op01 tracks were used in the game's trailer (which isn't to say that they don't appear in the game too, of course). I'd say they sound like a concert version of the main theme, which is woven throughout many of the tracks.

Along with Bonbon Battle 1, it's the most "traditional" Sakimoto piece in the rip, which may indicate that those are the only tracks he wrote (with the others being handled by other Basiscape members). That's pure speculation on my part, of course.

Keep up the good work! Incidentally, would you recommend the game? I've heard mixed things but I'm considering buying a Wii and a few games.

squaretex Apr 2, 2008 01:56 PM

As much as I think I would recommend it, I'd also suggest a rental...so that the player can understand the old-school gameplay, the job system, and the wonders of getting lost in large 3-D dome cities. ;)

If it hadn't been for the music, I'm not sure how quickly I would have found out about this game. But now playing it, I certainly don't regret it. :)

M4G: It comes as somewhat of a surprise that there has not been a soundtrack release announced for Opoona despite the amazing score. How much music was created for the title, and can we hope to see a soundtrack release in the future?

Hitoshi Sakimoto: I believe we have about 60-70 tracks for Opoona. Talking about the soundtrack, we've been considering that, but it hasn't been decided yet. If the sales of Opoona go well in North America and Europe, that would be additional incentive for releasing a soundtrack.
DO YOU HEAR THAT, PEOPLE?!? LET'S GIVE THIS TITLE SOME POSITIVE WORD-OF-MOUTH!!! :D

Arcubalis Apr 3, 2008 11:20 AM

You beat me to it. Good to know people were watching for it. I think it turned out really well, as he thoroughly answered the questions.

orion_mk3 Apr 3, 2008 12:17 PM

Terrific interview! Now I really want to see a soundtrack release for the composer breakdown!

Kaleb.G Apr 3, 2008 12:35 PM

Great interview, Arcubalis! I just really hope this get a soundtrack release. It doesn't make sense to me why all of his other works get soundtracks, and not this one (especially when it's the best soundtrack they've done since FFXII).

-=SeRaPH=- Apr 3, 2008 11:33 PM

The live acoustic recording for Opoona was done in April last year by Eminence @ Trackdown Studios. Pretty fun working with Iwata imo.

Fantastic to hear
But how are sales doing in the U.S? At least they have hinted a European release.

They have announced Valkyria of the Battlefields Soundtrack for the 21st May so that's something to look forward to in the meantime

Thanks also for the tracklist updates so far :D

No, definitely not, I say most of it is by him, or at least he definitely is the composer with the most credits on the project.

I think you can tell more about the composer by the compositional style used than the instrumentation.

For example, I think pp07 (great track) is quite obviously Kaneda's, going by his work on Odin Sphere and Deltora Quest.

pp05 is likely Iwata.

All the battle tracks are Sakimoto, as are the opening/ending related ones.

And I am certain op04_01 (maybe my favorite) is Sakimoto's, you can just tell by the vibe.

PrincessOvelia Apr 13, 2008 10:24 PM

pp04 is definitely Kaneda's with the signature chord progression.

as for battle05... it's complicated. I'd say someone arranged Sakimoto's work, though.

op01_03, op02_01/02, op04_01/03 are definitely Sakimoto's.

op04_01 is also one of my favorites. I can tell it's Sakimoto's just because it has the signature melody line (something like C - B - G - D is what Sakimoto loves) ^_^

pp05 sounds like Abe to me with that quirky chord progressions.

Additional Spam:
cp01: Abe, the most un-Basiscape Basiscape members. Almost Sugiyama-like.
cp02: the same arranger as op01_03. Can't tell though.
cp03: Sounds like Kaneda.
cp04: Abe...again
cp05: ...WTF? lmao
cp06: a little like Namiki's. Can't ascertain.
cp07: Sakimoto.
cp08: Definitely Sakimoto's. The percussion!
cp09: Melody definitely Sakimoto's.
cp10: Organ! still don't know who arranged it.
cp11: Sakimoto.
end01: Sakimoto.
end03: Iwata's arrangement.
end04: Sakimoto.
op_end/start/title: Sakimoto.
op01_xx: Theme by Sakimoto. 00, 01, 03: Sakimoto; 02: unknown... 04: Iwata (I guess).
op02_xx: Theme by Sakimoto. 01, 02 definitely arranged by Sakimoto, others not sure...
op03_xx: Theme by Sakimoto. 02 arranged by Sakimoto. others not sure... a little too pop-like, hard to decide...
op04_xx: Theme by Sakimoto. 01, 03 arranged by Sakimoto. Others again not sure...
op05_xx: I really don't know about this... weird, just weird. Doesn't sound like Basiscape.
opening04/05: Sakimoto.
opn_battle01-03: Sakimoto. 04, not sure, sounds like Iwata. 05 (definitely an awesome track!) should be arranged by some euro-electronica veteran...
opn_other01: Sakimoto.
opn_other02: Iwata.
opn_other04: Kaneda.
opn_other05: don't know...
opn_other09: Sakimoto.
opn_seirei: Sakimoto's theme.
opn_uku01-03: seems copied from somewhere else...
pp01: Abe.
pp03: Sakimoto.
pp04: Kaneda.
pp05: Abe.
pp07: Kaneda.
pp08: Abe.
pp09: Sakimoto.

That's all that I have an idea about... All are guesses but I have more confidence in some than in others.

orion_mk3 Apr 13, 2008 11:00 PM

Wow, that's quite the analysis. Who knows, that may be the closest we ever get to knowing the truth if there's no OST. But it may come in handy during the BSC, as I surely plan to nominate a track or two.

squaretex Apr 14, 2008 09:50 AM

Just to let y'all know, I haven't forsaken the renaming project. Saturday night, I went on an extended Opoona bender that lasted into Sunday morning. ;)

But there's plenty of renaming fruit born of it. If you check the renaming post, it's a LOT bigger now.

And now I know...cp03 is the theme for the Cathedral. Makes sense. :)

orion_mk3 Apr 14, 2008 11:52 PM

Fine job! Many of my favorites are now identified: Intelligent Sea, Intelligent Sea Waterway, Partizans, Bravo Company...there are only a few five-star tracks left to be identified (of course, that leaves a bevy of four-stars too). Only eighteen left altogether!

Oddly, I find myself liking a lot of the alternate tracks better. They seem to be better mixed, and there are some key changes (for instance, the trumpet in Bravo Company is a flute in the alternate).

squaretex Apr 15, 2008 08:46 AM

Thanks!
And it really makes me wonder...what part - if any - do those "alternate mixes" have in the game? I have yet to encounter any of them at all.

Just by way of warning...as I have been playing Opoona, I was taking notes on my laptop as I encountered the new music. However, the power adaptor cord had decided to die on me, just like the previous two did. :( So, while I wait for a new one, there'll be a brief renaming hiatus (should only be a few days).

On another note, the numbering is essentially how I came across the tracks in the game. It's entirely possible that someone else may encounter them in a different order, and so once the names are settled, perhaps the order should be renegotiated. For example, I went to Orcalpin Coast and the Holy Wilds after I became a 3-star ranger, simply because I could. :) However, the Holy Wilds become a necessity to visit a bit later in the game, and would have also fit right before Paradiso's music. It'll be little things like that which could probably be hashed out.

Arcubalis Apr 15, 2008 07:28 PM

Doesn't appear as though the alternate versions are even used in the game. I was noticing this as I was loading some tracks onto my iPod. Anyway, I don't recall what tracks are used specifically in which places. A lot of the music is reused in different areas, too, so it's not like it has to be the first time you heard it. Since the music is broken up into regions, at least it's not as hard as it could have been.

This sounds like Iwata to me, (especially its backing chords in the e-piano part, 0:27 - 0:33 as a whole, the clarinet melody, the overall track's simplistic structure and so forth). Btw, thanks to you, I finally found my rip totally incomplete. :gonk:

-=SeRaPH=- Apr 16, 2008 03:10 AM

I remember who composed most of the pieces but the music is stashed somewhere is storage and can't be bothered to take it out.

What I remember from the top of my head was the oboe solo track was done by Kaneda. He was astonished by how Huw Jones (Oboist) played and was kinda lost for words and staring at me... so I was like "Why dont you ask him for another take lol"

Arcubalis Apr 16, 2008 07:43 PM

Just finished the game. Sakimoto's name came pretty early in the credits, while the rest of the composers came at the very end along with credits like...

"Music performed by the Eminence Symphony Orchestra"
"Violin - Hiroaki Yura"
going through each instrument

Was quite nice to see all of the individual musician/performer credits while that "Music performed be Eminence Symphony Orchestra" stayed at the top the whole time.

Oh yes, those oboe solo are incredible! "pp03" and "pp07" from the game rip are both excellent tracks, probably my favorite from the game. You really have excellent musicians (you included), this is even more apparent thanks to the synth+live solo formula.

Ovelia, I first thought "pp04" was Sakimoto, are you sure it might be Kaneda?

-=SeRaPH=- Apr 20, 2008 09:56 AM

From just listening, it don't sound like Sakimoto. Who knows, I could be wrong really.

Most of the music wasnt done by Sakimoto as he was not on site to oversee the recording. I quite love the Basiscape composers, especially the professionalism of Iwata. Leaving certain things up to the specialist and knowing one's limit is one of the best things Basiscape as a company excel at.

...but there's not a lot of progress. :(
Haven't had a lot of Opoona time because I was having too much fun setting up my new computer....aaaaaand there's the matter of finally playing Okami, which rocks unbelievably. Please forgive. ;)

BUT...progress is still progress. Check the additions to the list.
There were a few changes as well. I went with the editorial decision that while the player CAN visit the Holy Wilds before Intelligent Sea, story-wise it just fits better between Creola and Paradiso. And the ambiances are labeled as well.

So, here's what's left:
cp08.brstm.mp3 - I'm guessing this would be the Dark Barrows?
end04.brstm.mp3 - Kind of a rhythm-only version of the previous
op01 00.brstm.mp3 and op01 tokione 00.brstm.mp3 - ooooooh, what are these for?!? They've been bugging me ever since I couldn't find them in Tokione!!!
opn battle03.brstm.mp3 and opn battle05.brstm.mp3 - So, which one's the final battle? :)
op end.thp.mp3 - Thankfully, this needs no explaining. ;)

That's it...only seven more to go!
Anyone wanna help me push this project to the finish line? :D

Oh it must be Kaneda's work judging from the timbre of the string section and percussion. :)

Any chance of another upload somewhere? The files don't seem to exist anymore at sendspace. :(

I'd love to help, but my files are all half-tagged and messy at the moment as I bring them into line with squaretex's project. Once that's done I'll definitely re-upload a nice shiny version with full tags.

That sounds like it will definitely be worth the wait. :) Looking forward to it!

squaretex May 5, 2008 01:22 AM

Alllllright...

I think that's all.

The only one I cannot place with 100% certainty is the one I call "Family Reunion", so my solution is just a guess/aesthetic thing. If anyone has a better solution, please chime in!

Otherwise...grab the info, make a batch file, and go to town!!! :D

orion_mk3 May 5, 2008 08:28 AM

Excellent work as always! Good to have the set fully tagged. I just need to do some tweaks and I can upload a tagged set.

I'd personally have called that mystery track "Opoona Main Theme" or some such, as it's woven throughout many of the other tracks, but "Family Reunion" is more specific.

squaretex May 5, 2008 08:33 AM

Thanks!

I beat the game last night, and played around a bit with the epilogue after the credits. Is there actually a scene where Opoona and the others come across their parents?

Can't say that I know. It'd be awfully disappointing if there wasn't, though, since the odds of a sequel are nil.

In other news, I've finished a fully tagged and ordered version of the game rip, using squaretex's titles. Four discs, with the fourth disc containing all the fanfares and alternates. Watch this space for the uploads!

Fantastic job you two. This definitely provides good compensation for the lack of soundtrack release at presence. I've been listening while doing my essay over the last hour or so. Unfortunately, Sharebee doesn't seem to process the mirror list for the fourth disc but I'll hope that's just a temporary thing.

orion_mk3 May 7, 2008 09:01 PM

Here's an alternate link for Disc 4: Opoona Gamerip Disc 4 (alternate link). The file is just a hair over 100MB, which might be why Sharebee is choking on it.

Well done, orion_mk3.
And happy to be of service! :D

Muzza May 7, 2008 09:44 PM

I've been (lurkily) following this whole Opoona thing, and while I'm not a Sakimoto fan, what I'm hearing about the music is pretty encouraging. I'll definitely be checking this out if I get the chance; thanks guys!

Drakken May 7, 2008 11:01 PM

Thanks, orion (and squaretex!). Definitely gonna check this out.

Dubble May 7, 2008 11:13 PM

I'm not a Sakimoto fan either. The only thing of his I really *REALLY* liked was Final Fantasy Tactics (sorry - I don't dig FF12 much) and what little chiptune work of his exists (Check out my Bonk rip for Magical Quest - holy GAWD that thing sounds freaking awesome)

When Sakimoto goes for a melodic, catchy sound to his music - DAMN is it fun. Opoona seems to fall into this category and I gotta say its the first Sakimoto score I've liked in a long time. Totally digging this. :)

Muzza May 7, 2008 11:17 PM

=) You've instilled more hope into me, Dubble. I have basically the exact same view on Sakimoto that you do; his catchy stuff is the best, the other stuff can potentially be pretty lame. 99% sure I'll like this one! =D

(Might check out your Bonk rip too, sometime~)

Dallista May 9, 2008 08:30 AM

Hiya guys, thanks a bunch for providing this great gamerip, the tags, uploads etc.! Listening to it now, and really enjoying it!

eriol33 May 11, 2008 11:15 AM

a humble mirror request for 4th part, I've been having problem to download it for some days (proxy problem). Pardon me if it's inappropriate.

You mean the existing alternate link isn't working either?

Rimo May 11, 2008 12:07 PM

Listened to a few tracks so far and I liked them. Will have to listen to the rest of the rip since it seems like a great score. Thanks for providing, and with such a neat presentation!

:) I'm very heartened by the nice response. The music is certainly worth it in my opinion--the perfect Basiscape score for people who don't ordinarily like them, or for anyone looking for something a bit different.

Also, eriol, here's a new link for Disc 4: Opoona Game Rip Disc 4 (alternate alternate)

Kaleb.G May 11, 2008 12:39 PM

Big thanks to squaretex for providing the titles. And gratitude to orion for providing the tagged tracks. I'm grabbing it now!

P.S. I noticed that "112 Bonbon Battle 2.mp3" should be "113 Bonbon Battle 2.mp3"

Thats me in a nutshell. I really enjoyed this rip. Thank you squaretex and orion_mk3.

Thanks orion. Great job on the rip. It's much appreciated. Downloading now.

Muzza May 17, 2008 07:09 AM

Finally got around to listening to this today. I was amazed. This score is superb. Depending on Sakimoto's level of contribution, this could be my favourite soundtrack of "his". The light-hearted, atmospherically futuristic compositions are full of enthusiasm and compositional talent. I can't really say which are my favourite tracks, since all of them are so fantastic. My second favourite game score this year, after Soma Bringer.

Now that I think about it, I probably love what's going on in "Industrial Side of Lifeborn" (hell, all of the Lifeborn tracks) the most, but it's all bloody fantastic. Sounds like ambient techno music in places, which is <3.

NinjaguyDan Jun 1, 2008 06:44 PM

Klondike Jun 25, 2008 03:29 PM
