Boobs and... Lightsabers - Soul Calibur 4

Star Wars in Soul Calibur IV news from 1UP.com

First off, thank you to the folks at High Voltage for the following:

Stolen Joke:

Finally, if there WAS a Soul Calibur 4 thread, I could not find it via search. That said, call me crazy, I suspect that sales for Soul Calibur 4 will now be exponentially higher with this announcement. Obvious stated. I mean, you've got tits... you've got a whole other fanbase to cater to... who cares if the game becomes another "Glitch" or "Guard" Calibur? Shit, I bet no one was playing competitively to begin with (stop talking about quality then, fags).

Just, wow, how out of left field was this?

Oh shitz, now it's worth getting the game. I'm not a fan of the series, but cause of these two I'd buy the game.

Lizardcommando Jan 9, 2008 07:40 PM

Wow, that's insane. I rather would have been Obi Wan or Luke Skywalker instead of Yoda though. I hope custom characters can use their weapons too. :D

guyinrubbersuit Jan 9, 2008 07:44 PM

That is pretty fucking awesome. I haven't been interested in Soul Calibur since part two which is a shame because the first one was so bloody awesome. Either way this game looks pretty damn neat and the addition of Yoda and Vader is pretty sweet.

SouthJag Jan 9, 2008 07:50 PM

I could probably think of some characters I'd rather see in the game. Personally, I'm not a big Star Wars fan, so this announcement kinda makes me not wanna buy the game anymore, especially if what 1UP said comes true -- downloadable content with more Star Wars fandom. Star Wars Calibur? Nah.

Rotorblade Jan 9, 2008 07:52 PM

I'll see how it plays. Bonus characters in a game I don't really enjoy are rather pointless, since I would of course have to actually want to buy the game in the first place. Again, I do see the merit here... I'm just not hard up on the promotion. But hey, get excited if this is your thing, nothing wrong with that.

How does bonus characters and DLC you don't have to download make the game any worse? It's not like you'll be forced to use Vader when you're rockin' it up with your pals.

I'm just hoping Yoda isn't to SC4 what Gon is to Tekken 3.

Kairi Li Jan 9, 2008 09:45 PM

Keep in mind guys, that Darth is PS3 version only, and Yoda is 360 only.

Which means you have the option to choose the version with the less irritating character.

Though I think it doesn't take a genius to know which dark sided character will generate more sales for fanboys...

And the downloadable content is just speculation anyway, not actual facts. Its likely they will implement this sort of content, but from the article there's no confirmation yet.

Not a big fan of Star Wars myself, though I did enjoy the original films. But as long as Darth Vader fights well enough, I say it would at least be interesting to look at. Not to mention this is probably one of the better looking character models of him we will ever see.

No. Hard Pass. Jan 9, 2008 09:48 PM

Or you could, you know, not as play as the extra characters and not download the DLC. Just puttin' that out there.

Rotorblade Jan 9, 2008 09:49 PM

Yeah, I just read that at IGN. Just... whatever, Namco.

Gechmir Jan 9, 2008 09:51 PM

NEEDS MORE BLOOM

:eyes explode:

Infernal Monkey Jan 9, 2008 10:02 PM

Aww, should have been Princess Leia and Jabba the Hutt, to fit in with the whole big boobs thing SCIV already has going! I'm not a big fan of Star Wars, but jumping around like spazzo Yoda would be pretty fun! And he's tiny, everyone would get all constipated with frustration over not being able to hit him.

Slayer X Jan 9, 2008 10:08 PM

All I know is that Vader's ATM Light-Bright had better work in this game. Otherwise it's not worthwhile. ^^

espressivo Jan 9, 2008 10:20 PM

lol, when i first saw this i was thinking wow this can't be real because they look so out of place. i'm not a star wars fan, so i don't really care if they're added or not. i just hope they bring back character creation and my favourite characters.
this makes me wonder if they're going to add more platform exclusive characters, like what they did with soul calibur 2.

Kostaki Jan 9, 2008 10:22 PM

Well hell, I'll take the Ninja Turtles then if we're adding pointless characters to Soul Calibur. They even already have movesets in the game since you can just clone existing characters (Leonardo --> Mitsurugi, etc) and using their shells to Guard Impact would yield epic hilarity. All you need is their original TMNT movie models (not this new movie shit), an orchestrated or remixed original TMNT theme variation to play in, and a New York stage to go with it.

Nostalgia would win the day in seconds there.

Dopefish Jan 9, 2008 10:49 PM

I don't think I've ever seen anything jump the shark harder than Soul Calibur has. This series went from excellent (SC1) to good (SC2), stayed there (SC3), went to SHIT (SCL) and now will have Darth Vader (in his officially licensed and special made black Zubaz sweatpants) and Yoda using their lightsabers in the most obscene fashion (in a Star Wars fan's mind, anyway) possible: in actual swordfighting. With other people who use SWORDS. And have no concept of the Force.

Did I mention the fact that a lightsaber would break a sword? In fact, the only rational way you could lose in a swordfight with Yoda is if his lightsaber broke off the end of your sword and the broken shard stabbed him in the head.

You're trying to apply sense to a weapon combat game in which the characters shrug off slashes from weapons as if it were nothing.

Slayer X Jan 9, 2008 10:54 PM

Did I mention that you think that SC2 is as good as 3 which is total BS. (and a total matter of opinion I know)

Also Heihachi used his fists in SC2, whech a sword would simply cut off, so I don't see how Lightsaber VS Sword really shines any new light on the same thing different weapon issue.

Also Namco fighting games arn't supposed to be serious. In gameplay yes. Everything else is fair game.

Dopefish Jan 9, 2008 10:56 PM

That's fair. However, from a standpoint of concept, there's a certain extent to which I'd be willing to accept a logic where a lightsaber vs. a sword/hand knives/giant 10-foot axes is a reasonable battle.

My point though was that the Soul Calibur series has fallen from grace and this isn't the most damning evidence (Link and bombs, what?) but I'm really disappointed.

(Arguing about the logic and physics of fighting games is lol)

Parn Jan 9, 2008 11:02 PM

Screw concept or sense. The only thing that should matter: is the game fun. When I turn on Lego Star Wars like I did earlier this evening, the last thing I'd consider asking myself is, "do Legos and Star Wars make any sense at all." I just play the game for what it is, and it's entertaining.

I mean Christ, are you crybabies going to pass on Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well because Snake is in the game?

Edit: In retrospect, I think I came off a little harsh there. Don't mind me.

Dark Nation Jan 9, 2008 11:03 PM

Very left field choice.

Only thing I don't get is this: All the characters from the SC series come from a 16th Century setting, or can fit into that setting fairly easily. Vader and Yoda are from a Galaxy far far away and their world is very science fiction. It doesn't make sense for them to suddenly wind up in 16-17th century (Which I'm guessing because it'll probably move up a bit in time to the 1600s). You know what I mean?

At any case, very interesting developments.

Dagobert Jan 9, 2008 11:08 PM

So is Jabba or w/e his name gonna be a downloadable character? His fat ass on some platform with some sort of weapon...nice.

Dopefish Jan 9, 2008 11:09 PM

No, and I didn't pass on Soul Calibur 2 because it had Link in it either.

Think about the characters themselves, specifically Yoda. From all we've seen, Yoda is unfuckingstoppable in a fight. Why would Star Wars fans want to ruin that for themselves by foolishly taking Yoda versus some experienced SC player? I'd personally be heartbroken to lose as Yoda. :(

Megalith Jan 9, 2008 11:31 PM

Of course Mitsurugi's katana is impervious to lightsabers.

I wish they'd release Soul Calibur on PSN or Xbox Live with net play, and be done with it.

Elixir Jan 9, 2008 11:54 PM

What on earth. It's a shame to see Namco selling out to having gimmicks like these in their games. It's no surprise though. I mean, look at the iDOLM@STER planes in Ace Combat 6. Very few people know why the hell anime characters of a game which wasn't even released in English are there, but they just are. For no reason.

The same concept seems to apply to this. There's no reason why Starwars characters would/should be in Soul Calibur at all, it just doesn't make sense. They just are. For no reason.

I still think Soul Calibur looks fantastic despite being 7 years old. They really didn't need to bother making a sequel to that at all (2, 3 and this are irrelevant). The original's just so fantastic, that it should be on Live, or something. Of course it won't ever work unless they magically fix lag in fighting games but hey. It isn't fucking Starwars in my Calibur.

Slayer X Jan 10, 2008 12:00 AM

Just the fact that probably only about 15% of gamers today even have a Dreamcast to play SC1 on. And while I agree that it does still look very the good. I was just playing it the other day, and the lack of moves and smaller combos in SC1 is just too lacking for me to take seriously anymore compared to the meatier SC3.

I'm by no means saying that SC1 is bad. Just... more casual in comparison to 3. Heck I even still love Sould Edge which I also tend to pop in from time to time... love the music in SE.

Like Dopefish and I kind of said. The games have had magma bosses, dragon like boss creatures, mutant lizards and zombie pirates on top of other things. So while Star Wars is perhaps era wise out of place. As far as the game's reputation it's not really doing anything the series hasn't been doing forever. It's not like some insane cast change like SF2 -> SF3 or anything. It's 1 Star Wars character for god's sake. If you don't like them, then don't use them.

Dopefish Jan 10, 2008 12:52 AM

I'm proud to say that I still have my Dreamcast (gifted to me on 9/9/99) and Soul Calibur, to boot.

Dark Nation Jan 10, 2008 12:55 AM

I guess I'm in the minority in that I liked SCII the most. I wonder what character they will have for the Wii version later on. Obi-Wan? Mace Windu? ...Stormtrooper? :tpg:

Dopefish Jan 10, 2008 12:57 AM

Gameplay-wise, I'd say SC2 had the best fighting system of the series, yes.

Wall Feces Jan 10, 2008 01:24 AM

I'm with you DN. I thought SC2 was the best entry of the series. It felt like a natural progression in every way, and unlike the fucking shitfest that SC3 was, it didn't lose its dignity in any capacity. Plus, Spawn was the best character ever. Bring his ass back instead of giving us Star Wars characters.

WolfDemon Jan 10, 2008 01:29 AM

This was great news until I saw that Vader was only on the PS3 version. I could give a shit about Yoda, really. Honestly, did anyone really like him until they saw him fight in Episode 2?

kainlightwind Jan 10, 2008 01:48 AM

I actually like SC3's gameplay. Just the characters are so out of balance. I know they made an arcade fix and it was a good fix. Just couldn't be something I could play at home. 4 looks great. And you don't have to play Yoda or Vader (although I'll be too damned curious to play as Vadar. Must. Resist.)

Torte Jan 10, 2008 02:18 AM

As soon as I heard Vader breathe, I was 100% o.O

Chaotic Jan 10, 2008 02:55 AM

Seriously, whatever happened to accurate timelines? Isn't Star Wars three billion years ahead of the Soul Calibur universe?

Although it's a nice announcement, it's a hit or miss with me. I like Star Wars. I like Soul Calibur. Put the two together, you might as well put someone for the Wii version if one ever comes out for it.

Forsety Jan 10, 2008 03:01 AM

Come on guys, you aren't being nerdy enough. They say at the beginning of every Star Wars movie that it takes place "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" so clearly they just cryogenically froze themselves and jettisoned here in some sort of space capsule!

Solis Jan 10, 2008 03:07 AM

Well....that was unexpected. I think it's a little bizzare really...Spawn was a stretch, but now Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur? I'm confused as to WHY and HOW they put Yoda and Darth Vader into the game. Granted, it's not the first time we've seen Star Wars characters in a fighting game, but something like Nariko from Heavenly Sword or Reiner from Kingdom Under Fire would seem to fit the Soul Calibur universe a little better, plus I don't see how they managed to get the license to use them. I guess they just were looking for something to give them a boost to their sales numbers and picked whatever took the top spot on Amazon sales records. Which oddly seems to be what many fighting games are doing it seems...

Oh well, it doesn't matter much given that it's just an extra character for each version. It'd be nice if they made both characters downloadable or available in a "gold edition" sometime down the road just so that the Star Wars fans that dream of having a Yoda vs. Darth Vader match will get the chance to. An unlockable Soul Calibur 1 would be a much sweeter addition though.

Well that would make sense if it weren't for the fact that both characters died during the course of the Star Wars movies. I don't think even nerd logic can explain this one away.

Marina Jan 10, 2008 06:56 AM

IMO Darth Moul would be awesome, I would like to see his 2-blade light saber slicing these good looking characters. :D

Elmoogle Jan 10, 2008 12:47 PM

They modeled the good David Prowse Vader instead of the shitty Hayden Christensen can't-fill-out-my-costume Vader, so we have to give them some props there. I really don't see why everybody's so up in arms about a game where Darth Vader and Yoda are going to be able to fight against a ghost pirate a living suit of evil armor and a giant-boobed woman with that sword-whip thing from Brotherhood of the Wolf. It never made any sense, shut up.

Solis Jan 10, 2008 03:58 PM

Even though the series already had some ridiculous characters, they at least fit into the game's setting a bit better than this new batch of bonus characters do. You didn't see Obi-wan fighting alongside Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean or Leah providing sexual favors to Conan the Barbarian, after all.

They would be perfect for a new Star Gladiator game though...

Divest Jan 10, 2008 04:45 PM

Seriously, just bring Spawn back and be done with this nonsense. I don't understand how swords v.s. lightsabers make sense at all, but whatever.

Either way, I hope you're able to make your own character and possibly borrow movesets from other characters. I think that'd be awesome.

Megalith Jan 10, 2008 05:07 PM

Kimchi Jan 10, 2008 07:19 PM

Her boobs gets bigger every game.

Haha, Vader for me I guess since I only have PS3 :(

Forsety Jan 10, 2008 09:06 PM

You have me there, but for all you guys complaining about lightsabers vs swords; it's clear everyone knew they were coming back from the grave to conquer earth because they failed miserably where they came from, so the soul calibur cast stocked up on cortosis blades to fend off lightsaber blows. See how much nerd logic helps (and doesnt help). =D

Are you serious we were arguing about this? :gonkmelt:

DarkMageOzzie Jan 10, 2008 09:18 PM

Regarding the whole light sabers cutting through weapons thing, there were metals that light sabers could not cut through or at least not as easily as other metals. Also before the Sith ever started using light sabers, they used enchanted swords to block light saber attacks. So it's arguable that magic weapons could block light saber attacks and several characters in this have magical weapons.

So we're just going to retcon the reasoning that all the blade weapons in Soul Calibur are now vibroblades?

Who cares if light sabers can cut through metal and shit. It's a fucking game. Does it really matter?

No, we're going to say that Soul Calibur isn't Star Wars canon and you can all shut the fuck up. Stop making video games nerdier than they already are.

If you're a perma-virgin, yes.

SouthJag Jan 10, 2008 10:40 PM

Perma-virgin. Reminds me of Ragnarok Online's perma-novice. You guys can view the new trailer at IGN should you desire. Doesn't show any gameplay, but it does show Yoda blocking Astaroth's axe by using "the Force". Massive lols. Vader and Mitsurugi clash as well, but just in a cutscene.

This is the most wtf random crossover ever since kingdom hearts, ok I take it back almost nothing is as random as that, but still compared to the heihachi/link/spawn thing this is a pretty bold move. I would have liked to have attended the meeting when they made this crossover wtf cameos decision :gonk:

Like what? It was said months ago that it would have guest characters that would "make Spawn look D list" which I scoffed at since Spawn is E list and didn't deserve to stand alongside greats such as Yungsun. There are however no characters better or bigger than these two. The only way they could top this would be to put Jesus or someone into Soul Caliber 5.

OmagnusPrime Jan 14, 2008 08:25 AM

I love how people are taking issue with the lack of realism in these games now that lightsabers have been introduced. I don't remember anyone crying and kicking up a fuss when a big fucking sword through the chest didn't kill people previously. Most attacks these characters make would probably kill, if not incapacitate, the other fighter. Since when have beat'em ups ever been about realism of their actions and weapons?

I loved playing as Link in SC2 so I say bring it on. I think it's a shame if they are doing the Vader in the PS3 version and Yoda in the Xbox version thing; I'll most likely be picking up the 360 version but who wouldn't want to play as Vader.

LOL YOU ARE SO WRONG IDIOT!

The Penny Arcade podcast regarding this is classic too, I recommend you all listen to it. They have fun conceiving crazy ideas for how the tales of souls and swords eternally retold gathered the warriors of our past.

Dizzy, I'd buy that version of Soul Calibur even if it was on N-Gage. Propped!

Megalith Jul 26, 2008 02:45 PM

In spite of the game's design being influenced by total anime faggotry, my copy of the PS3 LE has been preordered, and I am ready to see how they have managed to ruin the franchise this time around.

My only purpose for playing online is to kill anyone that uses the anime characters.

Zero' Jul 27, 2008 11:27 AM

The Star Wars characters are just guest just like SC2 (Spawn, Link, Heihachi). They don't affect the story. Bonus character are just waste of space, though Ashlotte and Shura look to have some potential. Too bad their moveset ruin them. Atleast it's better than Necrid.

SouthJag Jul 30, 2008 01:46 AM

So I played through Arcade mode and quite frankly, the Apprentice is an overpowered motherfucker. I fought him with Xianghua, and ideally they should have about the same reach. It was Talim against Kilik. His Force powers are ridiculous and he has crazy uber juggle combos.

Gotta say I'ma be hatin' on the Apprentice. Love the game otherwise though.

Chaotic Jul 30, 2008 02:29 AM

Yeah, I was playing the game at my friend's house earlier.

Using Xianghua myself, everything went pretty smooth up until the 7th Stage. Once I got to The Apprentice, that fucker wouldn't stop at anything to kill me. <_<

Ended up not beating him since we were gonna play some other modes and create some characters.

But I have to say, the Character Creation in this one is a hell of a lot better than SC III. Much, much deeper.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jul 30, 2008 07:28 AM

I've always loved the Soul Calibur games, Soul Blade is about the best fighting game of all time in my opinion.

I'd love to get this but the shitty d-pad on the 360 is really putting me off. Does anyone know if there's any decent arcade sticks you can get for 360 or a third party controller where the d-pad doesn't suck huge, hairy goat balls?

Infernal Monkey Jul 30, 2008 08:01 AM

Dunno about controllers, but there's a SCIV themed Hori arcade stick out, looks pretty solid!

http://image4.play-asia.com/640/6w/pa.124322.1.jpg

Not sure if it's just an American released thing though. Thinkin' about picking up the game tomorrow, seems like forever since I've played a decent 3D fighter!

Taco Jul 30, 2008 10:35 AM

I went up against the Apprentice with Yoda to unlock him, beat him first shot. Perfected him the first round.

I'm also digging the character creation. The fact that they kept in Random Generated Character in the character select screen is just icing on the cake.

nuttyturnip Jul 30, 2008 10:57 AM

I plan to pick this up on Friday, given that I've enjoyed the previous games. Online matches might be interesting among friends, but I fully acknowledge my suckage at fighting games, and I'll probably be slaughtered.

Is Yoda as cheap as I've heard he is? IGN said half the attacks miss him because he's so short; if that's the case everyone will be spamming Yoda online (Toon Link, Final Destination, no items, etc.)

Manny Biggz Jul 30, 2008 11:46 AM

While yoda is hard to hit while he's standing around, the majority of his move list has him jumping around like a cock bite. Because of that, he's slow as shit.

Summonmaster Jul 30, 2008 01:45 PM

I was actually surprised to see SC IV feature online playability since I didn't read much pre-release news on it purposely, so that's a welcome surprise, although I think I'll practice my Xianghua more before I even try to go online.

So far, the most notable part of SC IV for me is the character creation. All the colour changing options, accessories, and even voice pitch and skill modification capabilities can have you spending hours if you want to tweak your characters to the max. It's also pretty cool how you can make your own character and have them fight exactly like an existing character, instead of just a predetermined moveset that's weapon specific.

Chaotic Jul 30, 2008 01:49 PM

One little thing about the Character Creation that I'm happy about is that when you choose Voldo's style for your character, they still talk. Unlike in the last game where the characters just grunt, groaned, and yelled.

I really need to get my 360 from my cousin so I could purchase this game myself. I haven't missed a Soul Calibur game yet, and I don't plan to miss out on one now. :><:

Online isn't too bad either, but everyone and their mother (that I've noticed) whored out The Apprentice and Yoda.

Oh, and Duel of the Fates battle music for the fucking win.

Manny Biggz Jul 30, 2008 03:20 PM

The online online gaming I did on Soul Calibur was against a dude that was whoring out Siegfried's 2B. Honestly, Starkiller isn't that bad at all. Just gotta teach learn how to zone him.

Well it does appear that it's not possible to grapple him. Seeing as everytime I've seen a grapple connect on him nothing happens. I'm sure they didn't know how to make grapples look right with his size, but I'd say that being immune to grapples is kinda cheap.

LS Jul 30, 2008 05:38 PM

I've been practicing my Kilik, Combos are still hard to pull as well, But then again soul Calibur is not about combos its about hard hitting shots you pull off.

Still i'll purchase a subscription today to play with ya, Xbox live tag would be LiquidSnack

Chaotic Jul 30, 2008 05:45 PM

Oh yeah, if anyone wants to fight me when I'm at my friend's place, my Gamertag is Scorccio. I need some buddies anyway. :(

Just throw a PM my way if you're adding me.

Actually, you are very mistaken. The whole Soul Crush system makes it even more of a combo based game then ever before. Add that to the guaranteed damage off of wall splats and this game is looking more and more like Tekken with weapons.

Chaotic Jul 30, 2008 05:56 PM

Speaking of which, has anyone ever pulled one of those Soul Crush attacks off? I can never get it to work at all.

LS Jul 30, 2008 06:04 PM

I must be having a hard time then, I haven't played this enough to actually practice any of those soul crush moves, That was my mistake.

Megalith Jul 30, 2008 06:30 PM

Can someone tell me why they had to change all of the commands in Soul Calibur III. Naturally, they maintained the horrible command lists for SCIV.

But aside from that, SCIV isn't a fuck-up like II and III. I actually like what they've done with Mitsurugi...some insane shit is coming out of Mist and Relic stance.

I'd want to play online, but it looks like everyone bought the awful 360 version.

Karasu Jul 30, 2008 10:03 PM

If its any conolsation Megalith, I will be buying the ps3 version lol.

I havent played SCIV, nor have I played SCIII, but from what i've seen and heard about IV, its gonna be a fun game like I and II.

When someone's health bar is flashing red, you gotta keep beating on them until a piece of armor explodes and they stagger back and have some electricity around them. The moment that happens, you have to press LB. Pretty sure it's L1 on the PS3 controller. The majority of them are typical auto combo stupidity, but my personal favorites are Astaroth's and Maxi's.

Shively Jul 30, 2008 10:52 PM

I am some what happy that my main characters who have been in the game since SC1 has many of the same moves, it seems just as I perfect one character another Soul Calibur gets released!!!!

Since when? Soul Calibur and Soul Blade before it were all about combos. The only way to land a hit on someone who knows what they're doing is to vary the height of the third or fourth move in a combo so they block wrong. Standing big hits are strictly for when someone doesn't know how to recover from a grounding properly. Or at least that's how all the older games worked, I've not played this one yet.

So I went to my friend's house last night and tried this out. I can finally pull of Soul Crushes. :3

Voldo's is pretty sick.

Scarletdeath Jul 31, 2008 10:41 AM

Just wondering if anyone else has the PS3 version? Thought we could have a bout or two when there's a chance. Kinda looking forward to seeing the CaS you guys made. (I have mine in me gurnal, 3 screens)

Quite sure I've unlocked all CaS parts too, got me 31 honors already.

Another thing to point out, Taki, is broken. Nobody but a handful in the PS3 community could beat me. Handful as in 2 out of the near hundred fights I fought. The other loses in my stats are from my Nightmare bouts.

OmagnusPrime Jul 31, 2008 12:00 PM

Nope, got the 360 version over here. Not sure when I'll fire it up though, kind of wanted to get back into Race Driver: GRID first. Hmmm.

SouthJag Jul 31, 2008 12:20 PM

Anyone had trouble getting the update on the PS3 version? Mine always stalls out at 6% or lower. Any troubleshooting fixes?

Kostaki Jul 31, 2008 03:31 PM

I've got the 360 Premium Edition, and I've been impressed with the game so far. A little sluggish compared to SC3, and they nerfed Taki pretty hard, but all in all that's alright. Just forced me to go back and relearn Mitsurugi from when I used him back in my Soul Blade/Calibur 1 days.

I landed in the top 100 on the arcade leaderboard for a while, with a score of 520000 using Mitsurugi. I think I was in the 40s when I first got it, then 56 yesterday, and probably somewhere in the 60s today.

Getting close to dealing with the achievements, but that Tower of Souls shit is HARD no matter what unless you fuck around with skills and creation to give yourself an edge.

I do, although when I tried earlier to have a quick match or host a game it said my connection timed out, even though I was still connected to Playstation Network somehow :/

Character creation is still making me laugh a lot since I'm making alternates for characters that have bright afros when the head armour piece is destroyed, as well as questionable underwear. One minor and moot point is how it seems you can't change the weapon colours. I stuck Tofana Scissors onto my Broccoli man, but they had to be grey to my dismay.

Lord Jaroh Jul 31, 2008 05:34 PM

So apparently the new downloadable content for the game...well, it's not new content at all, it's simply a code to unlock what you have already purchased. The new content is already on your disk and the code simply lets you use it. Gotta like a company that is becoming an online whore. It's the beginning of the end for DLC...I hope that people will be smart and not support Namco's money-grabbing tactics.

Lacerta Jul 31, 2008 06:02 PM

That is nothing new, that's been going on for at least a year or so. The only difference now I suppose is that there are more and more people starting to notice it.

Jessykins Jul 31, 2008 06:11 PM

So after playing a few games online, is it just me or should Yoda be banned from ranked games? So tired of these cheap cunts using a character that can't be grappled and has most attacks miss.

When you saw that there was DLC available 3 days after the game came out, did you actually expect it to be brand new content?

Lord Jaroh Jul 31, 2008 06:19 PM

I did expect DLC to actually be new content, yes, not paying for content that is already there on the disk I bought, I'm just not allowed to "use"it unless I give them more money.

That is kinda sad actually. Reminds me of Phantasy Star Universe's version of update patches.

Slash Jul 31, 2008 06:40 PM

The one thing that kinda bummed be about this game was that there isn't a survival mode.

Overall though this game is really fun.

That's a valid complaint, but a well-worn one.

That doesn't imply that it's the end of DLC, though. The amount of shit companies have gotten for pulling this is staggering, and there's still plenty of actual DOWNLOADS out there.

Just restart your PS3 if that happens. And then prepare for "game session is full/can't connect" a couple of time in between every successful match up. Anyways add me on your PSN, we should go for some non-ranked matches. Your PSN is Summonmaster too?

@OP: Aww man, I was looking forward for a match with you. Any chance of getting the PS3 version too? =PP

@SouthJag: Just download the system update with the PC and transfer it to the PS3 with a thumbdrive.

Anyways, if anyone else has the PS3 version, let me know, we should have a friendly match ;D

True. I just wish that customers wouldn't blindly accept it... "well, it's only a couple of bucks..." etc. The idea is to not support companies that do this, so that they (hopefully) change their ways. Otherwise they will keep on doing this with content. Soon, they'll release a game that is the equivalent of one "chapter" and make you pay for extra "chapters" that are already included on the disk...

There is a time when companies have too much power, and right now, we as gamers for some reason are completely accepting of the shit they decide to dish out. I "hope" that the video game market as it stands crashes and burns horrendously. It's the only way that it will get out of this glut of ever-increasing money grabbing schemes to pay for their ridiculously large advertising/development budgets.

Sorry to derail, I'm just a bit upset at the shit that Namco's pulling.

Megalith Jul 31, 2008 08:22 PM

The problem is that it isn't a couple of bucks. Isn't Namco charging $10 for a single dumbass paint job in Ace Combat 6. It's ok---I haven't bought any of those jokes. Of course they'll release DLC that will allow you to take the bikini off the girls in create-an-anime-faggot mode. 60 dolla.

Scarletdeath Jul 31, 2008 08:44 PM

It's a couple of bucks this time. $1.50 for the CaS stuff, but $15 for SC1 soundtrack. Not that I'm buying anything.

[edit] Also, what the hell are people thinking when they make characters like these .

Shenlon Jul 31, 2008 08:49 PM

I have been in a cave when it comes to this game. I honestly thought it was being released this fall so when i heard of the release I was a bit surprised ^^
I I loved SC and the xbox version of SCII (go spawnage =0 ). SCIII not so great and I had heard rumors before hand that Dante (devil may cry) would have been a guest but it was just a rumor and a bit disappointed that it wasn't to be.
I'll see if I just sell my gamecube and get this game for my ps3 soon before everyone decides that they get too bored of it but hopefully it'll be fun enough to finally be a good fighting game that's enjoyable online

Megalith Jul 31, 2008 08:49 PM

I'll have to get the Soul Calibur soundtrack---can't resist. The SCIV soundtrack is garbage, except for a couple of tracks like Halcyon Harbor.

~Duelists~

Scarletdeath Jul 31, 2008 09:10 PM

You might wanna reconsider giving up $15 for the SC1 soundtrack. It's only available in-game for battles. Daylight robbery if you ask me.

you must have looked in the playstation network and saw that it still says 2.41 but 2.42 is definitely up for download

Taco Aug 1, 2008 02:03 AM

How are people progressing through the Tower of Lost Souls? I just hit the 45-46F block and I have to say that that is the biggest load of bullshit ever conceived. Three of your fighters (Without skills if you want the treasures) against a 300% defense, 200% attack Taki, Scytheman, and Astaroth. I can barely take out the Taki character with all three of my fighters, let alone all three.

Scarletdeath Aug 1, 2008 02:08 AM

Just put on equipment with good stats instead of the Impact/Gauge/Special/etc bullshit. And use Venom Fang A for those insane mobs.

Note that I haven't played much of the Tower though I know this strategy. I already got all equipments from getting above 30 honors. I have exactly 41 honors. Only a couple left. I'll probably run through the tower for 30 treasures (honor) then just complete it normally.

Chaotic Aug 1, 2008 02:10 AM

Helping my friend out with it, but we're stuck at Floors 30-32. Zasalamel is a fucking bitch to deal with. ;_;

Scarletdeath Aug 1, 2008 02:31 AM

May or may not help, but try mixing in throws and low attacks. AIs don't guard against low attacks as often. Even on Arcade or Story-Hard, I spam Mitsu/Nightmare/Astaroth with low attacks and get perfects often enough.

Chaotic Aug 1, 2008 02:36 AM

Hmm... My last run with it was using Kilik's style with HP Recovery A, I believe. Just kept spamming Vertical Attacks liek whut.

But if I hang out with my friend tomorrow and he still hasn't beated that mission, I'll try attacking lower.

Tower of Lost Souls was actually easier than I expected, having survived

Also, Arcade scores just for the heck of it.

Updated these images in my last gurnal entry.

Lacerta Aug 1, 2008 04:33 PM

Hmm, so ToLS has to be one run?

I guess I'll have to pull out my Astaroth to get through that then. Maybe a Yun-Seong to Soul Crush because he makes it so easy...

Scarletdeath Aug 1, 2008 04:38 PM

ToLS is divided into two paths:- Ascend and Descend.

You can have your own sweet time completing ascend since matches are divided into 2-3 floors each, allowing you to continue from the latest floor you stopped.

Descend on the other hand, is the survival mode of SCIV. Your HP carries over to the next match, and you get a treasure unlocked for every 5 floors beaten. Lose one, and you restart from floor 1.

And yesh, Astaroth is awesome in the tower. That was who I used too. Yun Seong's -->B is a hack when it comes to quick Critical Finishes, but might be a little hard to pull in descend. AIs combo you liek wut.

Lacerta Aug 1, 2008 04:45 PM

Shouldn't be too hard then. Once I have maxed Yun-Seong and bought more equipment I'll work on the Tower then.

I've just been completing story mode for god knows what reason... (I have the LE so I didn't have any real need to do it for Soul Calibur // Soul Edge // Joke Weapons with the exception of a few characters)

Scarletdeath Aug 1, 2008 04:52 PM

The beauty of Yun Seong is, you don't even need to max his style to play him. A level 1 YS is as formidable as a level 9 YS. AIs are dumb enough to just stand there and block the -->B until they get soul crushed, then destroyed with L1.

First thing I did when I got the game was to clear story mode with everyone. Wanted to have a complete Ending list.

Also, the LE exclusive CaS parts, are they any good? I heard those codes can be used twice too?

Lacerta Aug 1, 2008 05:00 PM

I don't know about being able to use the code more than once, but the parts are okay.

Long List of Parts:

M-Uniform A+10 D+20 H+30 Special+45

M-Blazer D+15 H+30 Impact+45 Special +10

Some guy put them up on his photobucket but I don't know how long they will stay up there.

Scarletdeath Aug 1, 2008 07:53 PM

God, I can't beat the last couple floors of the tower ascend. Floor 57~59 is hell. The AIs actually uses the tag-team combos to a full extent. Once you get caught, say goodbye to your life gauge.

If anyone has any tips on the damn thing, I'll be bloody thankful for it.

Lacerta Aug 1, 2008 08:35 PM

Grapple til infinity?

Random 360 people I've heard mention this area used The Apprentice as one of the two characters (mostly because he can take advantage of people he can get into the air)

Megalith Aug 1, 2008 09:28 PM

Wow. The online mode is practically worthless---even when I was the host, there were still 1-2 second hiccups.

It's funny how the only character I lost to was Taki, because the network simply cannot keep up with such short-frame attacks. It's also sad when you start blocking Kilik's low 8WR2/8+A sweep one second in advance and you still get hit. And create-a-faggot mode needs to be removed online completely. Can someone tell me why everyone creates a fat nigger with dreadlocks. It's ok. Just ringed you out with Mitsurugi.

I manage to get Astaroth with HP Drain A and Venom A, cleared 57 and 58 with low sweep attacks. Got lucky with the AI on 58 actually. Then at 59; fucking Nightmare is immune to grapple, and blocks every shit I throw at him. Then he comes at me and gang rape me with that damn ring girl. Can't even recall her name now due to anger. Also, for some reason, the AI's grapple counter rate is random. There was a match where I couldn't grapple at all.

As for the Apprentice strat, doesn't work too well. I use him for his B+G grapples to throw mobs off the map, but not much use otherwise. Floor 59 Nightmare seriously blocks all my grapple attempts. I'm quitting this part of the tower until a solid strategy appears. First time I felt so frustrated over a game to the point of throwing the controller out the window.

Lacerta Aug 1, 2008 10:05 PM

The difficulty of it seems to vary each time.

I've heard someone use Nullify Counter A + Soul Drain A + Knock Down with dual Siegfrieds... and just stay back and do one attack whenever they charge. If they get in close try attacking+switching+continuing a combo.

Shave Damage A also seems to be of use if you have a character that puts it to good use.

59F Nightmare is the hardest opponent in the whole Ascending portion of the tower... beating him will take luck or skill, depending on how fortunate or unfortunate you are.

Scarletdeath Aug 1, 2008 10:26 PM

Nullify counter seems to be quite pointless. You can't really break enemy's combos with it on anyhow. And by Soul Drain, you mean HP Drain?

But the thing about Siegfried or Nightmares, they can't combo much. Same with Astaroth. When the AIs closes in, if you can't repel them with a knockdown, you're pretty much dead. They could tag-rape you from full health to 0 without pause.

Shave Damage may sound good, but I'd rather slot in HP Drain/Venom A since Shave doesn't do much damage.. Not enough skill points to slot all of that without sacrificing major ATK/DEF/HP stats.

And I also read that some dude actually grappled floor 59 Nightmare all the way. Hard to believe it worked. The AIs must've been on sleep mode when he played it.

Seriously, Namco should work on their AI. Command reading AI is NOT challenging, it simply takes the fun out of a game. I'm taking a break from 57~59. Let me know what you think when you hit those floors.

Lacerta Aug 1, 2008 10:42 PM

Err, yeah I think they meant HP Drain... or rather I hope they did if they were using dual siegs.

It seems they just use his long range poke and back off, repeat until bored.

Apparently the decided "best" equipment set to get through everything except 20F and 45~46F (for non-LE) is:

Hermits Hood (D-15 HP+25 Gauge+25)
Juok Chaplet (HP+5 Boost+15)
Demonic Pauldrons (D+20 HP+25 Gauge+20)
Chain Mail (D+10 HP+10 Gauge+10)
Leviathan Cuirass (D+35 HP+25 Power+25 Special+30)
Lusca Gauntlets (A+20 D+10 HP+10)
Asura Tassets (D+10 HP+20 Gauge+30 Special+10)
Shinobi Tabi (Gauge+10) [If you don't need Gauge you can use Bandages for D+10]
Nightmare Greaves (A+35 D-20 HP+5 Power+30 Gauge+25)

Insert HP Drain A and anything else you can try to fit in for others if you want...

I'll see how much I die when I go to the tower later tonight, still working on Yun-Seong Style Lv9 (two levels to go) so I can have my "ultra easy mode" for a majority of the floors.

Scarletdeath Aug 1, 2008 11:09 PM

I don't think the long range poke method works well enough. Whenever I step back, the AI starts chasing after me. And often, they wait for me to attack before dropping their own guard and retaliate. Command reading AIs FTL.

There are a couple of "best" sets around, depending on character stats, or skill stats. And by skill stats, there are even more combinations depending on the skills you wish to equip.

If you're interested, this is the female CaS equipment that got me through level 1-56. 45/46 and all that don't matter, it's just the same character but with different style when need arise. I throw in Yun Seong style for Criticals, works wonders on mobs with super ATK/DEF.

Voodoo Crown (D+30 HP+15 Power+35 Special +30)
Ribbon (Gauge+10)
Gorgon Spaulders (D+30 HP+25)
Kunoichi Tights (A+10 HP+10 Power+10 Gauge+10)
Tortoise Cuirass (D+35 HP+25 Gauge+20)
Gorgon Gauntlets (A+20 D+25 HP+5)
Gorgon Fauld (D+40 HP+10 Gauge+20)
Shinobi Tabi (Gauge+10)
Kingfisher Greaves (A+30 D+15 HP+5 Gauge+20)

With Astaroth's style, I have the Nanbanfu Axe equipped and I get a final A-137% D-135% HP-145% with HP Drain A, Venom Fang C and Auto Counter C. My main priority was HP Drain, the rest were to fill up the extra skill points.

You'll only need to get to level 8 for HP Drain A. Heck, if you'll be spamming Yun Seong's -->B, you don't even need HP Drain. Just throw in a Soul Gauge Damage A, available at level 6. If you want an easier run, prepare a 2-3 Astaroths for tag teams as well (or 2-3 Yun Seong, as you'd like it).

Additional Spam:
Wow, I cleared floors 57~59. Not sure if it was luck, don't intend to retry and find out. I reworked my Astaroth, gave him higher damage/defense, and spammed my usual sweep attack with Venom A.

Surprisingly, didn't have to grapple at all. And I killed Nightmare before ring girl. Just had to time my mid~long ranged attacks to keep them at bay and let Venom do it's part.

And, floor 60 is easy as hell. Used 3 of my latest Astaroth (will post recipe if anybody interested), and finished Algol in less than a minute. Same tactic as the previous 3 floors. Now I only have 6 more honors left before completing the list.

Lacerta Aug 2, 2008 04:29 AM

My team of Super Astaroths plows through anything I have already completed the requirements for (because I'm lazy and want to have all the chests opened)

Only 129% Attack, 116% Defense, and 175% HP, but with 1A(Hold), A or 1A(Hold), B nothing really stands in my way.

Damage is nowhere near my 200% Attack Astaroth, but then that one is for extreme no-skill pray and hope to god they die situations.

Scarletdeath Aug 2, 2008 06:02 AM

How on earth do you get 175% HP or 200% ATK? When I build a CaS, it's like some force is holding me back, forcing me to balance out the stats. I can't even get a certain stat to 160% without having some other stat to fall below 100%.

But anyhow, let me know how it is when you get to 57 and up. I spammed 1A, A and 1A, B till then. And then it doesn't work that well with 1A, B since they parry it alot easier with the command reading AIs.

Also, farming gold off floor 60 Algol. Getting 12500 every 2~3 minutes lolol

[EDIT] I just realized that the announcer in SCIV is Col. Campbell from MGS. What the hell. "YOU WIN. SCISSORS61."

[EDIT2] Supposedly, the empty slot between Apprentice and Vader is a slot for this new character .

Lacerta Aug 2, 2008 06:40 AM

I beat Tower of Lost Souls already.

It took a few tries, but switching out 1A (hold) and regular 1A worked most of the time.

I'm not sure whether to laugh and cry joyously, or piss in my pants. I'm not sure WHAT to think right now.

Kostaki Aug 2, 2008 08:06 AM

Tower of Souls is easy enough for the most part with the right skills, even without having to resort to single spamming moves. Speaking of which, I ripped the Thanatos track from the 60F battle in case anyone wants it, it's 8:58 and 11.1MB or so encoded in Standard VBR. There's no sense in encoding in any higher quality from a line-in source, and it's the same quality I usually rip at so it's good until the official soundtrack. Just need a place to upload to.

A 200% = Astaroth w/ Great Maul + other random +A junk. Everything else will be piss poor but he was used for a different reason.

My HP 175% Astaroth setup is:

Spoiler:
Nightmare Helm Agony (from DLC pack 1) which has A-5 HP+40 and Special+20
Oval Glasses (not sure HOW they don't conflict, but okay)
Juok Chaplet
Warthog Pauldrons
Chain Mail
Noble Garment
Death's Gauntlets
Guiman Yecha
Shinobi Tabi
Warthog Boots

Weapon: Nanbanfu
Skills: HP Drain A, Venom Fang C

Remove the Oval Glasses and you drop from 129% A to 124%, but your HP goes from 175% to 190% I just use them for some chars that can make use of that +Impact so Counter Hits don't do extra damage.

Kostaki Aug 2, 2008 07:00 PM

I can't seem to win a match online at all, and those are the last achievements I really need. I'm more of a reflexive player using Taki or Mitsurugi, but it seems like both of them are out the window because everyone and their dog chooses either Kilik, Astaroth, or Nightmare and then begins spamming the holy hell out of every distance move they can knowing you can't defend from it. That 1 second delay simply does not allow for it.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to neutralize this?

Megalith Aug 2, 2008 07:47 PM

If you can't win online using Taki, and lose to the likes of Astaroth, you're terrible.

Kostaki Aug 2, 2008 07:51 PM

I'd concede that if the game were playing at full speed online, however it is not.

I can impact the fuck out of almost every slower character normally, but I'd be lucky to even land a single impact against them online.

Megalith Aug 2, 2008 08:18 PM

I can GI just fine online, but I'll admit that it really only happens against short frame attacks. Soul Calibur is largely an offensive game, and even more so online---since the lag is so fucking awful, you have to practically "predict" what your opponent is going to do, and buffer data into the network before the other person can. Quicker characters such as Taki and Maxi clearly have the advantage here.

If I'm fighting against the larger characters, I always close the gap by using a strong attack that moves the character a considerable distance forward. I would also imagine that the attacks could be either sidestepped or ducked...

Chances are, they're non tracking. Sidestep, launch, GG. If they start sidewalking with you to help with their tracking, it's a good time to start trying to put them in a mix up. Remember, if an attack is high, you can duck them and whiff punish. I just hate that so many of the while standing moves in the game are highs also...

How can you say that the tower is easy while you can't win a fight online? I have over 80 consecutive wins with Taki online but I find floors 57~59 in the tower to be mad hard.

If your opponents spam Kilik/Astaroth/Nightmare, spam them back with fast characters. I hadn't had any problems with Taki. Another protip, upgrade your character's ATK/DEF/HP stats. Having good skills equipped but low in character stats and you're dead anyway.

Also @Lace: 200% ATK Astaroth kills enemies in 2 hits, but has shitty overall stats.. Unfortunately not ideal for tower usage.

Beating the computer does not requires more luck then actual skill at the game. It's the same with any fighting game. Playing against another person is a whole different world. Even when you're a competitive level player, there's certain thought patterns you have to keep in mind when fighting other people. in the span of 2 - 4 rounds, you have to figure out:

Do they know what they're doing?
Was that a set up or just random?
Are they good at breaking grabs?
Do they like to turtle because that's their playstyle?

Various other factors I can't think of at the moment. I hope you get my point though.

Scarletdeath Aug 3, 2008 03:49 AM

I know for one thing: my skills aren't good enough for head on collision against floor 57~59 AIs. I got over those floors by playing it safe, hanging back and using longer ranged attacks. It's purely luck against the AIs. If it counts for anything, I had no problem farming Algol on floor 60 either.

As for online, I have no trouble anticipating what you mentioned from other people. Heck, I don't even need to grapple them to win if they have auto grapple equipped.

On the side note, only 4 honors left! Wooo~

Lacerta Aug 3, 2008 04:39 AM

You can sort of manipulate the AI into doing what you want them to do, but if you mess up they get into a groove and you pay for it.

Algol on 60F is pretty funny since when I fought him he instantly KO'd himself by Ring Out.

I've been spending time looking at various CaS creations from people, found a few that look pretty neat.

Raziel
Ky Kiske
I-No (why is she flat)
Richter Belmont

Scarletdeath Aug 3, 2008 04:42 AM

Those are incredibly well done! I'd love the Raziel recipe especially. Now if only there's a guitar joke weapon for I-No (she isn't flat, just not Lara Croft properties).

Megalith Aug 3, 2008 04:43 AM

Online mode is killing me. I am feeling lag even when I'm doing something as simple as 8WR. Throws my entire game off. It's sad when I can't even block or GI Siegfried's strings that end in a low attack. Seems like the frame-intensive stuff like throw break and GI/P need a 2 to 3 second lead time.

In terms of character customization, I hate how you have to put on all kinds of ugly, mismatched gear in order to get the stats you want.

And all those CAS suck compared to my eagle head Mitsurugi.

Jessykins Aug 3, 2008 05:06 AM

So am I the only one who busted their ass getting honors just so they could unlock all the CaS clothing options?

Spoiler:
Yeah, I probably am.

Megalith Aug 3, 2008 05:15 AM

I've got half of the honors unlocked, but none of them were intentional. I hope to unlock everything in CaS, in the hopes that there is something that will let me make accurate versions of past characters---why does Namco introduce faggotry like Yun-Kimchi, when they might as well bring Hwang (and Li Long) back.

I tried to make Hwang, but 90 percent of the faces were fucking shit (are there even any new faces you can unlock). Also, the style you choose is a complete mirror of the regular character, down to the pose---since Hwang's style is Xianghua's, he looks faggy as hell.

I'll give Namco my money without hesitation if they put more Soul Calibur 1 stuff into CaS---oh nevermind, the DLC is already on the disc.

Scarletdeath Aug 3, 2008 05:25 AM

You don't have to have an ugly mismatched dress-up for good stats.

I quite like my CaS here, A-155%/D-149%/HP-150%:

I initially got 30 honors for the equipments too. Now I get the remaining honors for the sake of completing the list. And it's the better alternative for all equipment than going through the tower's treasures.

Honors left are (4): 100 Criticals, 200 impacts, obtain 350 equipments, all equipments and weapons.

It's just a matter of patience for these now.

DarkMageOzzie Aug 3, 2008 08:54 AM

I'm gonna be getting most the honors since they also count as achievements on the 360 version. That and it's alot better then trying to get all the chests on Tower of Lost Souls.

Anyone else alittle disappointed we can't use the Apprentice or Bonus Character weapons for CAS? I know the Bonus characters movesets are just copies of other characters but they have their own unique weapon graphics. Although knowing what they already did, they're probably more then willing to charge us for it.

Then you can probably go ahead and stop, since there sadly is not.

Megalith Aug 3, 2008 02:17 PM

I think the fact you can't use lightsabers for CaS is a legal thing; they don't even let you change the colors for the Apprentice.

UltimaIchijouji Aug 3, 2008 03:10 PM

I would have loved to CaS using Shura's dual katanas. Yes, I could have used Cervantes, but it just doesn't look as nice.

Jessykins Aug 3, 2008 03:26 PM

The Lightsaber itself is a separate license, I think, so they didn't want to pay more for that kind of customization? I dunno.

Seconded on the Shura thing. Actually, I just want those chaps she has. Nice thong, bitch.

Scarletdeath Aug 3, 2008 04:01 PM

YouTube Video

and watch Algol jump off the top.

This would be what I'm talking about, though I've neutralized it by learning a little more with Mitsurugi and taking more advantage of his 8 way run arsenal against the slower characters, so now I'm winning every 4 or 5 matches or so before taking a loss to another Kilik spammer.

Nice, but will he do that every time? He has about 20 ways to ring you out as well. I love that fight though if only for that stage music. I ended up raping Story on Hard repeatedly until I had enough gold, S Rank is 24000 gold.

Have 48/50 achievements atm.

Are you kidding? I got from 600 gold to around 50k in around 2 minutes, including loading time. Just have some common sense to equip Nullify Ring Out A and your last few honors are yours in no time. Going through story is a waste of time.

It certainly wasn't a waste of time for me, but to each his own I guess. I've never beaten Algol at all using that method, I beat him normally each time I fight him. Eventually I got to the point that I decided to just rip the stage music and leave it be.

I don't really regret doing it the way I did.

Megalith Aug 3, 2008 04:35 PM

Mitsurugi's 8WR 2/8 A+K is a fucking beast---the range is nearly nonsensical, and people don't expect it.

...are there unlockable items exclusive to the Tower of Lost Faggots mode, or can I just unlock all this with honors.

I've beaten Algol countless times with my farming team, the legit way. I still get 12.5k gold in 1~2 minutes or so compared to 10 minutes of story mode for 24k. I've already beaten story with everyone, no point wasting time on it.

And going through 10 minutes of the game in real time for 24k isn't a waste of time compared to getting 12.5k gold in 10-20 seconds? If you say so.

No exclusives except a stage unlocked in 14th floor or so. The rest can be bought from the shop after honor unlocks them.

When I played through Story as Algol, that move is the only reason I lost a fight. I did it by complete accident.

You think that's bad? You should see his 2K,B. Pure insanity.

Whoa, you basically need like, 3 million gold to buy everything. I just got the honor for all weapons and equipments, and my final gold tally was 3028450 on my Tower of Gold counter.

Kostaki Aug 3, 2008 10:13 PM

Just finished getting all honors and achievements in the game. Got my Hero King achievement and now I can finally brush this aside for a while, but I'd still be more than glad to play with some GFFers from time to time.

They didn't implement this in their new trophy system? I'm surprised, I would have thought they could since they basically have everything already in place for it.

At least it was built in to this game so you could take advantage of them regardless, which is a good thing.

Scarletdeath Aug 3, 2008 10:26 PM

The trophy system is bullshit. So far, main PS3 titles like MGS4 and SC4 doesn't have any trophies. Heck, 90% of the current titles doesn't have trophies. I don't even know of any game that has trophies. They tried copying Xbox's achievement system, but pretty much failed so far.

Shenlon Aug 3, 2008 10:32 PM

Yeah I had no problems with not having achievements in ps3 games but once they announced the trophy's I was pretty damn interested but sony promises and doesn't deliver. Well it is up to the developers I guess but still sony screwed up big with firmware 2.41
Only game that I know that supports trophies is Stardust, I would have thought that newer games would have implemented it by now but it's pretty much a failure so far, as well as the in game XMB.
Still I'll be getting soul calibur for ps3 tomorrow so if anyone is interested in online play then up for a few quick matches.

I don't know why they bothered trying, to be honest. Achievements are fucking stupid. You hear the argument of "it gives you something to do in the game once you've beaten it" but I just don't buy that. You know what should make a game worth playing? THE FUCKING GAME.

Achievements are just another bullshit concept introduced to the industry that serves no purpose beyond artificially inflating game play so that designers don't have to sink as much effort into adding actual substance to the games they make.

Sony should never have even wasted their time.

Scarletdeath Aug 3, 2008 11:27 PM

I like in-game achievements. In-game goals that holds rewards, I understand, but system based achievements adds as much replay value as playing the entire game looking through a mirror.

The other upcoming waste of time is the PSN Home. If people want a Second Life duplicate, they'd go play Second Life. Sony should work on something meaningful, like say, God of War 3, or at the least fine-tune their current system instead of all this nonsense.

Lacerta Aug 3, 2008 11:35 PM

Your skill as a whore is determined solely by your gamerscore, obviously.

The achievements in Soul Cailbur IV are just the Honors themselves, so it doesn't even give you anything to do, since you get 2/3s of them anyway just so you can have all the CaS stuff without tormenting yourself with ToLS.

Kostaki Aug 4, 2008 12:02 AM

I don't really mind the achievement system at all, because it gives you something to work toward while you're playing the actual game. There are some retarded mindless grinding achievements (Blue Dragon Level 99 rank shit) but for the most part the achievements in this game in particular are built to be opened over time. A lot of the additional challenge that comes from it is opening them up as fast as you can and figuring out ways to do it. Scarlet posted the 12000g in 13 seconds bug whereas I had been slowly doing it a ridiculous way.

Star Ocean 3 was the very first culprit to do this, and even then I got all 300/300 Battle Trophies on that as well. I'm not looking forward to Star Ocean 4's BTs though...

Slash Aug 4, 2008 12:07 AM

Personally, I think achievements are okay, but my huge problem with it is when people try to be all high and mighty saying "look at me and what I can do" to make themselves look all big and bad.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Aug 4, 2008 12:25 AM

When was the last time you saw anyone do that?

Seriously. I've never met anyone who bragged that they had a high gamerscore, or that they had any specific achievement. And I've encountered some pretty big shitheads on Live.

Lacerta Aug 4, 2008 12:32 AM

Maybe on GameFAQs they would do that kind of crap, but who pays any real mind to that place?

I wouldn't see any real reason to mention you got "x" achievement unless it was vague in how to obtain it and you wanted to tell others how to do the same.

Treasure Trove from Lost Odyssey can burn in hell.

SouthJag Aug 4, 2008 12:33 AM

Scarletdeath Aug 4, 2008 11:04 AM

Back on this game though, there's pretty much nothing to do after all honors. Now I'm just wasting hell of a time creating cameo characters and such. This as much a dress up game as it is a fighting game.

Chaotic Aug 4, 2008 12:07 PM

So how in the world did you people kill everyone on that floor with a Critical Finish?

Scarletdeath Aug 4, 2008 01:56 PM

Yun Seong's -->BB

Throw in a Soul Gauge Damage skill for faster results. I farmed my 100 CF honor on floor 11.

I did it with a customized Raphael. Have Soul Damage A and 2 other soul gauge related skills on him. Not to mention the enemies in that stage like to block alot making it more feasible.

I spammed his back A and back B attacks alot to get them flashing.

LS Aug 4, 2008 05:00 PM

I know this is a dumb question adn all, But actually how do you get Honor ?

Kostaki Aug 4, 2008 05:02 PM

Honors are the achievements in the 360 version, and are standalone Honors in the PS3 version. It's the things like 100 Critical Finishers, beating Story on Hard, collecting all the equipment, things like that.

Go to Museum --> Battle Records and you'll see what they are.

Megalith Aug 4, 2008 05:48 PM

You get honors by not sucking at the game---dead serious. Half of them should come naturally.

On another note, I'll have to admit that Towers mode is stupid as hell. I've only bothered to play 11 stages, but what is the point of all this wannabe-RPG shit. What happened to challenges that consisted of clever and skilled AI. Now, you put on some gold underwear and an afro so you can hit 5 times as hard. Oh aight.

Can I get Edgemaster Mode from Soul Edge. The 360 version instantly red rings because the music would be too much.

Shenlon Aug 4, 2008 08:41 PM

So I got my ps3 version of the game and I have to say that i have totally gone nerd on the force attacks from darth vader and I don't even like star wars.
And megalith, I thought you were just being critical about some of the characters but when I actually saw the "Anime" characters, I knew what you were talking about ~_~

I also decided not to install right away just to see the difference (well more like I didn't have 1gb of free space on my ps3, so much for 80gb)

way I saw the loading times in story mode Without the install,
Vs 1 = 5 seconds
vs 2 = 10 sec
vs 3 or 4 = 25-30 sec

With the install
Vs 1 = Immidiate (sometimes 2 sec)
Vs 2 = 3 sec
vs 3 or 4 = 7 to 10 sec

Rough estimate but yeah a slight difference to get your game on.

Haven't tried out create a character yet since I sorta missed the middle Icon but the few ps3 users here who want to play online hit me up. PSN AniZeke

espressivo Aug 4, 2008 09:51 PM

i just got the ps3 version today and I forgot that you could install it, so when I started story mode against 3 characters, I had to wait a really long time. Installing cuts down the load time significantly.

I thought the story mode was super short, I wished it was longer and had a few more cutscenes. Vader's A+G throw is cheap ass, just go to the edge and use it on the opponent and you get an easy ring out. I had to use that method against the apprentice on arcade mode since I could barely get a hit on him.

Summonmaster Aug 4, 2008 10:32 PM

Vader's fisherman's throw certainly is hilarious to see, albeit a bit lame to use against someone with Nullify Ring Out A to deprive you of the fun.

What exactly are Seung Mina's quickest options? I'm adamantly using her online, only to have lots of trouble when pressured up close, only to have 2K or 6K and maybe a high smack with the bottom end of the staff, as the only quick pokes available, since it doesn't seem like Mina's A attacks are fast at all. Obviously she's meant to stay at mid/long range, but of course although optimal, that won't always be the case.

Scarletdeath Aug 4, 2008 11:28 PM

Wow. Infinite Ivy Combo found. You cannot regain control in the air when chained. Supposedly the "cannot regain air control" part has been confirmed by multiple SC pros.

Note: Apparently, the youtube tag doesn't work with a link from uk.youtube.

Lacerta Aug 4, 2008 11:41 PM

EDIT: After too much testing and probably destroying whatever new-controller-feel my control had, it is definitely an infinite you cannot escape from. I retract my statement before about it being otherwise.

The attack itself inflicts a special juggle that exists in SCIV (I never touched III but maybe it is in there too) that, when hit in the air again, will keep putting you in this same juggle over and over again. This particular spinning launch juggle will not allow you to maintain air superiority. Basically you can mash the stick / d-pad all you want but your polygons aren't going anywhere.

The only way your opponent will be able to get out of it is if you hit at the wrong distance or angle. It is also somehow possible for them to escape in the last stretch of the infinite, when they are going really high, due to the attack sometimes hitting them and causing a juggle at a weird angle due to height.

The first two followups are also the hardest ones to do after the launch. Get the hang of those and you are pretty much set...

Megalith Aug 4, 2008 11:42 PM

Off the top of my head, Seung Mina has 6A, K and 3K, K. I only trained once with her, and I remember her having a large handful of considerably effective low strikes.

Manny Biggz Aug 5, 2008 12:16 AM

I'm enjoying the hell out of Lizardman in this game. His crawling stance got upgraded with some amazing goodies and his NCc 66B+K, A, B is too manly for words. Anyone with the 360 version want to set up a room for 4 one of these days?

Kostaki Aug 5, 2008 12:38 AM

Lizardman is the only character I cannot consistently beat thanks to all the upgrades he got since the last game. A friend of mine always chooses him, and chose him again in this game to play against me, and he ended up getting the better of me in the end 3 games to 1. All his moves are crazy confusion now, tons of methods to feint and strike. I've never been good dealing with a primarily low strike game, and that's most of what Lizardman is now.

Might actually have to put in more practice to beat him.

Manny Biggz Aug 5, 2008 12:52 AM

First thing you need to find out, is your best option against his crawl stance. Look for your quickest move that can hit grounded. Another thing to remember is that Lizardman is a generally slow character. If you have a character like Maxi or Taki, you can lock him down real good. Stay on him and he has very few options to get away. I'm still learning the game myself, but this is the main stuff that has destroyed my strategy so far.

Kostaki Aug 5, 2008 01:53 AM

Makes sense, I made the switch from Taki to Mitsurugi because Taki's overall speed was lowered in this game but I might have to pick up Taki again. Though I never was able to use Mitsurugi's UL/U/UR+(A+B) to do that flying strike move. That would throw most of what he does right there.

Is there any way to avoid that crawling unblockable other than a lucky jump?

Manny Biggz Aug 5, 2008 02:04 AM

He doesn't have an unblockable from crawling. He does have that really slow rolling unblockable that he can cancel into the stance though. You can simply sidewalk or interrupt him.

Kostaki Aug 5, 2008 04:24 AM

Haha damn, it looked like to me it was a crawling unblockable, but it seemed like every time I'd try to sidestep it it would nail me anyway. I'll head into training to see what I can do about it.

Scarletdeath Aug 5, 2008 05:54 AM

Whooooo, I got the LE DLC contents from my friend's PSN download history. Download sharing FTW.

Megalith Aug 5, 2008 07:19 AM

I don't remember what Lizardman's rolling attack is like, but I'd imagine that kB might be effective.

Shenlon Aug 5, 2008 12:13 PM

The story is mode is just pathetic. I'm just skipping through the opening stories for each character because it sounds like a really bad fanfic and the ending sequences are just really lame anyways that I just don't care about the story.
I went through arcade mode as darth vader to get the apprentice. When I fought the apprentice I just side stepped until he created an opening for himself since he tends to do that a lot. And the pattern Triangle, Triangle, Counter attack was also seemed to help.

The honors I can understand getting if you just play the game and play good. I can even understand the honor in unlocking all the art since it goes towards the completion of unlocking everything.
What I can't understand is why they made this an honor.
"The Last two numbers of total play time and remaining time in a victorious battle were the same."

wtf

Ironically the first time I played arcade mode on my friend's console, I got that achievement for him. I'm not gonna force it down my throat just to the honor, but I'll just get it when I get it. Easiest way to do it.

Also, a random note. Floor 21... Who else agrees that the "Voluntarily Ring Out yourself" chest is the easiest (and stupidest) task to do?

Shenlon Aug 5, 2008 09:57 PM

Yeah I got that damn honor on a whim. I think We all agree that honors are basically useless other than bragging rights but that particular one is incredibly stupid.

Also I went online and I had so many laggy hiccups but I think it was mostly me. I sucked anyways ~_~
I also tried to create a new character and some of the bonus characters are so fun to play with that i wanted one of those styles but they were completely locked to those characters. As well as the jedi styles which would have been fun too.
EDIT:
Oh and the ending for the bonus characters were actually more entertaining than the main characters even without actual animation. It's sad that they couldn't put more quality into story mode.

Summonmaster Aug 6, 2008 04:05 PM

Ashlotte certainly catches my eye with the whole doll motif matched with the axe and wire skirt. Certainly an effective alternate for Astaroth for both the unknown and deception factors.

I just encountered one of the most ridiculous CaS creations online a couple of days ago. This one person's character named "Mizuki" looked like a nurse in a pink dress and was carrying the Pow Hammer. It actually distracted me so much that I couldn't focus on the match! Obviously, it's the Astaroth moveset, but it kept making me laugh since it made sound effects and was so large, not to mention her high voice and looking completely like an anime character. That single match instantly made my day, and I wish more people would use the joke weapons, which don't even seem to be just for laughs anymore (140 Power and 140 Boost? Yes please!).

Scarletdeath Aug 6, 2008 04:15 PM

^ Speaking of which, I actually made an Astaroth with a full suit, and a Pow Hammer along with an afro. Unfortunately the stats sucks, so I can only play him in arcade/standard matches.

Also, sorry I didn't get online. Can't hook up my PS3 and PC at once, so it's either one at a time. I'll get on sometime to whoop your ass though! . I added you on PSN too. disgaeafanboy right? LordNihlus speaking.

Manny Biggz Aug 6, 2008 08:20 PM

My approval rate on live has plummeted since playing this game. So many immature jackasses. It's almost as annoying as the hosts on Tekken: DR kicking you from the room when they lose.

Scarletdeath Aug 6, 2008 08:25 PM

^ Let me guess, Kilik spammers?

Just fought Shenlon online, the bastard was one of the Kilik spammers lolol

Shenlon Aug 6, 2008 08:36 PM

omg what =0
With both our connection combined I actually experience delay lag instead of the "communications" lag ^^
So when i was spamming one move (A+B) the delay wouldn't let me spam my other moves (hard down+AB) ~_~

I actually got a few awards with you.
Fought against darth, Break Armor, win with broken armor, double KO. Although I think you were going easy on me o-o

glad my mic didn't make us disconnect continuously and also that it works @_@
I'll try to have more than one created character next time >_>

Scarletdeath Aug 6, 2008 08:48 PM

Yeah, I'm not the best choice to play online with, due to my shit connection (1M). I actually wanted to do some running attacks, but the lag prevented me to do anything. You might've noticed me running up to you and not attacking a couple of times.

And no, I didn't really went easy on you.. Just didn't spam 2-3 moves to win a match. :p

I forgot we could actually get you a couple more honors, all stage online, all 20 characters fought online, etc. I already gotten all my honors, so I don't have anything to attend to myself, so to speak. Just give me a ring if you need a hand getting any honors.

I don't have a problem with those people. Once you recognize his tracking strings, you can punish the holy hell out of him. All I need is to get on the offensive and I can take people out pretty quick. Whether it be a RO or a KO.

Like I said before, my connection varies from awesome to suckage so it was kinda both of us on the delay. Like earlier I was playing perfect and then later in the day I kept getting the damn "communication" signal. I wanted to invite Miles since I saw him online but I don't think he would have enjoyed it as much since we were laggy for the both of us ^^
Still we had some fun matches, not so much in our first when I tried to spear you with the two swords and threw myself out the damn ring ~_~

Slash Aug 6, 2008 09:14 PM

I find it kinda annoying how the matchup system works. I liked the thing DOA4 had going with the whole rooms then battles kinda revolve thing.

Scarletdeath Aug 6, 2008 09:33 PM

I actually don't mind laggy matches a bit. I know my connection is crappy, so it's better than not fighting online at all.

Also, my friend just downloaded the $1.50 DLC. I got it for free off his download history lolol

espressivo Aug 6, 2008 09:45 PM

I can't even join a match online, I try both custom and quick match and it never works, it says no matches or if I manage to get in the custom matches, when I pick a room it always says it's full even though it clearly says there's only one person in it.

Shenlon Aug 6, 2008 09:52 PM

360 or ps3?
I'm on ps3 and it happened to me all the time as well. Way I see it you gatta be fast to get into those rooms becuase 4 spots isn't enough to stay open for long. But then again when I try to Create a match it takes a good minute for anyone to join. Much easier if you just have buds online.

SouthJag Aug 6, 2008 11:34 PM

Okay so, I'm gettin pretty fucking sick of this.

I'm still unable to download the 1.01 update for the game. I've tried a wired connection, wireless connection, etc. And I know what happens -- the download starts and it resets the connection. As far as I know, every PS3 owner who goes online with their system experiences this disconnect with their router or modem -- the PS3 for whatever reason reboots my router every time I turn the system on.

That's fine and everything, but this damn update won't get past 10% without the connection failing. So wassup. I can't seem to find one, but has anyone seen a separate download for SC4's update?

Scarletdeath Aug 6, 2008 11:41 PM

I have no idea on my side. My connection is a mere 1M, but I got the download with no problems. Done in a couple of minutes. Then again, I got my copy on the 29th itself, so..

Inhert Aug 6, 2008 11:54 PM

I had the same problem, disable the media server connection in the network setting. Apparently this feature has a problem with some router...

I'm pretty sure this will get rid of the problem above, but I,m not sure if it will help for the SCIV update.

SouthJag Aug 7, 2008 12:00 AM

I had my copy same-day too, still had the problem. I actually managed to get the update this time, and I'm pretty sure I've narrowed the problem down to two things -- the modem and the router.

There's definitely an issue with the router. I plugged straight into the modem and got everything just fine, so I think the modem may just be a little whack. But the modem could be one of those shitty ones provided to me by my cable provider; the ones that tend not to like being plugged into routers. Who knows.

Megalith Aug 7, 2008 12:07 AM

I'm usually able to join a game after selecting quick match a couple of times. I heard that it's better to just create your own room, then limit it to two people to minimize lag, but I'm not sure that actually works, since I've experienced even worse lag in ranked matches.

We should all set up a day to play some matches online. My PSN is TrueHD.

Shenlon Aug 7, 2008 02:59 PM

i saw some goofy characters online, i especially laughed when I broke someones helmet to reveal a huge afro.
I tried creating a character and the default costume turned out like the witch from soul eater like this,

Then I got the idea to create a few more characters from that anime despite having minimal gear that i unlocked through story mode.

Black star who came out....well not so great but a little close ~_~

And maka

UltimaIchijouji Aug 7, 2008 08:13 PM

I really want Namco to patch this with Trophy support. I know it's probably not going to happen though, huh?

Megalith Aug 8, 2008 06:51 PM

where have you been >_>

I played with CobaltKatze yesterday. it wasn't so bad considering my connection, it was less than a second of lag. i was even able to pull off some darth vader counters and made him earn his victory. Still he totally owned me ~_~
his characters were interesting as well. The joker, harley quinn, someone from no more heroes whom I didn't recognize.
I decided to create more characters after that since my roster was pathetic. Then I jumped online and I've come to hate azaroth people. Then again I haven't come to try and master more than 3 characters.

Oh and the 11th floor totally pissed me off until i found out how to easily cheat with Taki.

Slash Aug 8, 2008 07:26 PM

Yeah, once I saw all the jester stuff I totally went for Harley Quinn, named her Harle (Chrono Cross) but its totally awesome.

I kinda wish you could use a skull for a head, but then again everyone and their mother would make Death/The Grim Reaper.

espressivo Aug 8, 2008 09:00 PM

My connection was finally good enough to play online today, but it took so many tries. I couldn't connect to anything on Player Match, not even friend invites. Ranked Matches are the only ones that worked for me, only if I chose quick match, custom match doesn't work it either says it failed or the room is full.

once i got into a match, it was silky smooth, there was no lag at all except for one match out of the 5 i played, and it was just a huge lag spike. i hate my internet connection, there are times when i can't even sign on to the PSN and times where it was lag free.

i'd like to play with you guys but i cannot connect to friend invites at all

anyone play as yoshimitsu? i'm still trying to learn him and he can be very tricky with his many stances

Shenlon Aug 8, 2008 09:11 PM

sometimes i just forget that he's there but he is an awesome fighter. You can especially get accustomed to him rather quickly if you were already used to him in Tekken. It kinda sucks that some basic movements like the side twirl take some of his blood.

Manny Biggz Aug 8, 2008 10:07 PM

Actually, Yoshi plays totally different than his Tekken self. Moves that are amazing in Tekken, are not so great in SC and vice versa. This is the 2 sword version that was introduced in Tekken 6 though. He's also really high tier according to the early tier consensus.

WolfDemon Aug 8, 2008 10:45 PM

I've made like 25 characters with the Character Creation tool. I don't have a decent camera to take pictures with, but I've made Link, Ganondorf, Cloud Strife, a Black Mage, Ichigo and Ikkaku from Bleach, Afro Samurai, Grey Fox from MGS, Bruce Lee, Shao Khan, Grandad from The Boondocks, Crono, Lenneth, and a few others I can't remember. I've got it until this sunday if anyone wants to hit me up on Live.

Kostaki Aug 8, 2008 11:53 PM

I made the cast from the original Battle Arena Toshinden series earlier today, and trying to figure out what else I want to make. For what I actually use, I made Nel from Star Ocean 3 to use Taki's style, and Georg Prime from Suikoden V to use Mitsurugi's style. Toshinden had a lot of katana-based characters (Eiji/Sho/Kayin) that I can cycle though too.

I tried to make a Lenneth, but it seems like this game makes it impossible to create shit with the limited armor sets. Still, it's a bit of a step up with the other creation tools.

Slash Aug 8, 2008 11:58 PM

Yeah, most of the characters I make are more for arcade/standard play because well...they totally blow when it comes to special.

I'm surprised that Soul Calibur didn't put team battle back in. With the whole switching thing, that would definitely make things VERY interesting.

Shenlon Aug 9, 2008 12:04 AM

I made quite a few as well. I put that big cat suit on a character to try to pass it off as a kupo like yuna wore in FFX-2. When you break the armor it reveals yuna with something similar to the dancer dresssphere.
Also made Zoro from one piece, Claire from Claymore, tried to make zabuza and haku. Also made trunks and gave him Amy's style in swords so he looks pretty damn gay so it fits him perfectly. Oh and my newest one, princess peach. Only characters I copied were trunks and peach I tried to make the rest something not many people would make since I'm tired of seeing ken's and snakes all over the place
Oh and the biggest flaw of trying to make guest characters is that they're stats will really suck if your trying to be precise so they're almost always better off in standard matches

Chaotic Aug 9, 2008 12:09 AM

I <3 Yoshimitsu. He's currently one of the characters I'm working on.

Stances I still need to get used to, but he's one of the best characters to decend with in the Tower. A+G<- spam? Take life when you lose it. The moment you drop your opponent, you could almost immediately pick them up. Just be careful of the opposite direction. You could give life back. o_o

I haven't attempted to make any game characters or anything special as of yet, but I'm waiting until I unlock all the parts to start doing so.

And I just downloaded that customizable extras pack. I <3 Nightmare's SCII helmet.

Scarletdeath Aug 9, 2008 12:44 AM

I played around with Yoshi when I fought Shenlon the other day. Stabbed myself a couple of times lolol

Speaking of Nightmare's Helm, the last helm looked the best for me. I think it was one of the concept helm that didn't make the cut in the past games. Gundam like <3

Slash Aug 9, 2008 12:49 AM

Hey, I just want to clarify, the 1.99 download pack is the same as the pack that you get with the CE, right?

Scarletdeath Aug 9, 2008 12:51 AM

Different pack. The LE pack came with school uniforms and suits, while the download pack 1 gives you Soph's old breastplate, and 8 helms (Yoshi/Voldo/Nightmare/etc).

And I got both packs free >__>

Chaotic Aug 9, 2008 12:52 AM

Nope, The download pack is items from the previous versions of Soul Calibur. The CE pack is a bunch of stuff Japanese people would wear (Business Suits, Typical Anime School Uniforms, that kind of stuff).

Dammit, Scarlet! And the download pack one comes with the CE? :gonk:

Scarletdeath Aug 9, 2008 12:58 AM

I didn't even buy the LE for this game, I just got both packs free off my friends' download history ='D

Going off the PSN note, and back on to the DL Content.

Do you honestly have to be connected to Live or PSN to actually USE the equipment?

Since my connection at home is still pretty bad, I can't get online. When I edited my character, it said "One or more equipments that are unavailable at this time were removed."

Seriously. What the fuck. I want my SCII Nightmare Helmet. :gonk:

Scarletdeath Aug 9, 2008 03:10 AM

I didn't have to connect to PSN to use those items. All PSN was needed for is to download the packs. Install the mini add-ons, and you have it in your HDD. Maybe you should get the PS3 version instead :p

Chaotic Aug 9, 2008 03:11 AM

If only I had one. <_<

But I'll test my theory out on Sunday or something when I go back to my friend's house. Either way, I don't think that's the case that I actually have to be connected, but we'll see.

Megalith Aug 9, 2008 03:12 AM

The "DLC" is already on the disc---you are just downloading an unlock key.

Chaotic Aug 9, 2008 03:26 AM

Perhaps this would also be a good time to steal crap from my friends who blew off a bunch of money buying stuff in the XBL Marketplace.

Easier to system link the 360s together or buy a memory card unit (who the hell actually does that? ;_;)?

I tried this out (unplugging internet, signing in under a different account that had not touched SCIV in the event it would somehow recognize that lacechan had grabbed the DLC) and I am able to access the DLC items just fine.

I'm not sure what the error is in your case

Chaotic Aug 9, 2008 04:55 AM

I'll probably just re-download the content or something.

Just a wild guess, but I hope that renaming my hard drive didn't mess with the content or anything... I doubt it would. :|

I can't answer for sure regarding the PS3. But with the 360, if you download something and then put the harddrive on a different 360, it won't let you use it unless you're logged in. Don't know if that helps any.

Shenlon Aug 9, 2008 10:02 AM

Well for the ps3 I think all you need to do is log into their account and view their download history to download it yourself. Although scarlet should know more about that psh >_>

Anyway new update on the game 1.02. Probably online stability. I hope they incorporate being able to chat while actually playing instead of being cut off right after the versus screen.

Additional Spam:
Ok so I have a question.
Tower of Souls floor 24, 240 point combo damage.

How da fruck?

EDIT: nevermind I found a trick with yoshimitsu which made it incredibly easy

Megalith Aug 9, 2008 05:56 PM

Well, the whole point of omitting chat from the actual matches is to cut down on lag.

Grawl Aug 9, 2008 10:01 PM

Is on-line gameplay broken, or is it just me (PS3)? I just battled a level 41 (I'm level 2) and once he didn't get his initial blow, he just spammed the same attack which I had no idea how to block. Also I just went against a lvl. 19 and once he didn't get his initial attack up and got surprised by my low attacks I could take him out easily.

What the fuck is up with this?

Chaotic Aug 9, 2008 11:05 PM

How do you think people level up so quickly? Skill? Ha!

People just care about winning. Spamming attacks is the norm on both PSN and Live.

Megalith Aug 10, 2008 02:44 AM

The online mode is good for fucking around---that's all. A reflex-based game is practically impossible, which is why everyone rushes down their opponent. GIs and quick-frame attacks can shut them up---too bad you can't rely on those online.

The best characters to use online are those with low attacks built into their movesets, and fast unblockables, which can be spammed all day and can't be guarded against. I just got owned by an Amy player---I'm not going to call her cheap because I'm unfamiliar with the character and how she plays offline, but she has an unblockable that seems like it comes out in 2 seconds, and a bunch of spammy regular attacks that not only move her forward, but are super-quick and end in lows.

Kostaki Aug 10, 2008 04:42 AM

I didn't even bother to level past 20 Online because there's little to no point with how shitty the network code is for the game. Soon as they get their shit in order with it I'll be more than happy to return to it.

There's really no excuse that VF5 online is practically lag free and this is full of shit. Get with it Namco.

Scarletdeath Aug 10, 2008 07:41 AM

Online is only great when playing with friends. If you actually want wins on Ranked, you have to spam. The lag makes timing of GIs and other moves near impossible. It's retarded, but you can't do anything about it.

Shenlon Aug 10, 2008 09:57 AM

I'm specifically avoiding ranked matches because of the people who go around and to the same combo over and over again. In unranked matches I just find people practicing with how good they are with a certain character, practicing how to spam moves, or just looking for a match to show off their created characters.
I'll most probably spam kilik once I do go for ranked matches, I'll just wait to see if the other player picks astharoth.
But yeah as scarlet said, it's mostly fun with friends because we can just fuck around and not take it all that seriously.

Manny Biggz Aug 10, 2008 12:28 PM

People hitting you with the same attack over and over again = frame advantage. That means that you should:

a. Block the move and then retaliate.
b. Block the move and then sidewalk and punish whiff.
c. Block the move and duck if it's a high.
d. Block the move and jump attack if it's a low.

Taco Aug 10, 2008 12:33 PM

Or guard impact it, since it's the same attack. If you can't recognize the pattern or rhythm to it then it's no wonder you keep getting destroyed by it.

Online? Stupid fucking advice. Listen to Manny.

Just use your best attacks and heal when necessary.

Shenlon Aug 10, 2008 01:44 PM

I've been able to pull of some guard impacts online, on purpose.
If I ever do see the same combo performed over and over again I just simply throw a quick punch or kick since those tend to be quicker.

Rotorblade Aug 10, 2008 01:50 PM

It's not a matter of whether you can do it, so much as doing it consistently enough for it to be viable. Which, with online play's fucked up play standard, it's much more convenient to pick something that requires less stringent execution. IE (with due respect): Why even mention you can do it when it obviously isn't helping against spammers.

Kostaki Aug 10, 2008 03:45 PM

You're literally forced into choosing "Custom Match" and looking for those magic 4 and 5 bar latency people no matter what you do. But pretty much every Kilik, Siegfried, Astaroth, Nightmare, and Rock spammer can be dealt with using quick sidestepping and 8 way moves.

GI is simply not an option unless you're playing against a 5 bar latency opponent, and even then it's a high risk move. Just use someone you're familiar with, and wait for the proper timing to do something. Break through a spammer's guard one time, and keep the heat on them to win the match since they have no idea what to do under pressure.

I had a 22 winning streak at one point in Ranked using only Mitsurugi, so it is possible to have decent matches with people. I ended up losing to one badass Ivy player that had my number, but eh. That's the way you want to lose, when you do.

Scarletdeath Aug 10, 2008 04:29 PM

I don't even have the luxury of looking for those 4/5 bar players. Had better luck with quick match. Took me HOURS to get to level 20. Thank god I have that over and done with; even more so before the move-spam infestation began.

Hadn't encountered many problems with spammers though, Taki's jumps and rolls works like a charm.

SouthJag Aug 10, 2008 04:39 PM

I haven't played online yet -- what's the point of getting ranked higher? That unlock new things?

Scarletdeath Aug 10, 2008 04:42 PM

Go to Museum --> Battle Records. Look through the items in there. You will then find the only point to do so.

Megalith Aug 10, 2008 04:59 PM

5 bar connections mean nothing.

In fact, I ran into more "connecting..." messages with 5 bar players.

Manny Biggz Aug 10, 2008 09:56 PM

Dunno about you guys, but 5 bar matches were pretty much flawless for me on XBox Live.

Unless you block if first, that's exactly what you should NOT do. There are sometimes where you shouldn't retaliate at all too. If you're fighting against anyone with some any sort of knowledge of the game, they might use something like a combo that's safe on block for set ups. Some stuff even gives frame advantage on block.

If you guys want to really be viable at all in vs play, look this stuff up. If you don't know about somethign like frame advantage then I can kill you with something retarded like Liz's 3K. If you get hit by one, you're only option is to block/GI/JI the next one. If you try to move or interrupt it in anyway, it will interrupt because of the frame advantage that it gives. This is a example of a tool to use against mashers. It's called "training them to block". Of course, to the untrained, this will look like me being a cheap spamming bastard, when I'm really just making you look bad because of lack of knowledge. It's like someone not knowing they are able to attempt to block shots during a basketball game.

Just throwing that out there...

Rotorblade Aug 10, 2008 10:19 PM

I don't know, Manny. My problem with the game just stems from stupid shit, like the inputs. I really like Setsuka, but Mitsurugi/Taki players can set up a few shoulder macros and do the kind of shit Setsuka needs precision Just Frame inputs for. I really don't like Namco's ideas for controls, it supports the whole "artificial barrier" idea entirely too well.

Scarletdeath Aug 10, 2008 10:22 PM

Whoa.. Honestly, I don't have the patience to check every move on every character for frame advantages. That's just time consuming and pointless over some victories in a game. This is waaay different from knowing how to block shots in a ball game..

I'd rather just have Taki jump around or roll to evade. Her attacks pretty much have a frame advantage over many characters--at least I've been winning with her.

Then again, I'm more on RPGs and MGS-type games. Pretty much got bored of SCIV after getting all honors.

Manny Biggz Aug 10, 2008 10:44 PM

Sure, it's not for everybody. I've only begun to study the game myself. I tend to find enjoyment in breaking the mechanics down in fighting games. It makes it more rewarding overall and entertaining when you're in high level competition. Even if you do well against a top level player in one or two matches, it doesn't feel anywhere near as satisfying as knowing WHY you did well.

Don't let the frame advantage stuff scare you. There isn't even a full list released yet. If you want to test some moves, get a friend to help. Go to training, pick the same character, set the dummy to controller, have the other person block whatever attack you want to test out, and then both of you do A,A (generally the fastest move in most character's arsenal). If you interrupt, you're at an advantage. If he/she interrupts, you're at a disadvantage. If you both hit at the same time, you're at 0 (no advantage or disadvantage).

That was a nuisance in Tekken also. Have you tried buffering? If you want a great place for info on your character and the game mechanics, here's a great spot: Soul Calibur Forums - Setsuka

Scarletdeath Aug 10, 2008 10:51 PM

Speaking of the testing part, I think you can actually do that on your own--with practice mode's recording function. Just record the command you want repeated and play it on the AI. (I, for one, don't have a second controller)

Another thing, I did heard about Sophitia's attacks have frame advantage (FA) over MANY characters. Not tested myself, though I do find her AA/BB attacks to be bloody fast.

Also, if you do manage to test all the FAs, I hope you'll make a list up when you have some free time :P

I mean, I'm sure with time I could get the timing for the presses down, but why bother when you can go to other characters who don't have nearly the amount of frustration to get their A-Game going? It's just a bad decision, it can be circumvented, but it really damages the playing field.

Like you said, it's bad game design. There's always those characters that get held down because of this, but the high comp admires people that still use those characters. (Lei from Tekken) I guess people put themselves through all that input practice for bragging rights. Any other characters you're interested in giving a shot?

This pad is driving me insane. When I start working in a week or two, I'll be grabbing the PS3 version. If you guys wanna hit me up, my PSN is MannyBiggz. Feel free to add me now if you wanna play Metal Gear Online, Tekken: DR, Unreal Tournament 3, or Eye of Judgment online.

I'm sticking with Setsuka, but I just felt like venting some frustration. Mitsurugi is still really good, I just can't fathom why it's a much friendlier learning curve on a character like that, whereas if you want to be different, you have to get run through the ringer of Just Inputs and Buffering.

The dumb ass EWGF type mentality Namco has always bothers the fuck out of me. I mean, to use an extreme, you'll see great players in Tekken 4 who don't play Jin... but when you go to where the money matters, it's still the fucking Jin show. Again, that's an extreme, but I think Namco could learn a thing or two from the ideas that David Sirlin was making prominent in the scene about inputs and artificial barriers.

What really hurts my perception of the game is that SC4 has a polarized scene, with people playing online and then people going head to head in person. I'm still waiting to see what the verdict is on SC4, whereas I could go to GGPO or VF5 and deal with entirely less hassle.

DarkMageOzzie Aug 11, 2008 09:11 AM

Floors 57-59 are driving me insane. I've never gotten this frustrated with a game before. I got the 1 million gold honor because I've been stuck there so long. I've been trying for 3 days and 3 times today I had Nightmare down to a sliver of health and he pulls something off out of nowhere to stop me from winning.

I wanna slap whoever came up with the Tower of Lost Souls.

Megalith Aug 11, 2008 05:27 PM

Isn't Setsuka some cheap bitch. Last I remember, she had low attacks that came out in like, 6 frames.

It's kind of like complaining how Amy isn't strong enough.

Summonmaster Aug 11, 2008 05:30 PM

Regarding all this frame advantage talk, there's this Mitsurugi move that I've been seeing a lot. Would I be correct to say that the move where he kicks you and then follows up with a large overhead slice gives frame advantage on the first hit upon block (if you know which move I mean). It looks like the kick leaves him open, but really, trying to do a quick poke after that always results in a counter hit with the meaty followup slash.

I finally managed to get a meager 10 wins online, although at the expense of 33+ losses :/ Seong-Mina sadly isn't cutting it for me nearly as well anymore as Voldo, since no one ever knows what to expect from him. I still have lots of trouble against decent Mitsurugis and Siegfrieds unfortunately.

You're retarded, though that's no surprise from you, Zeal-wannabe. Now, before you go fagging off at the mouth about "hah hah, I got you because I'm internets trolls", Just Inputs are required to get her useful and viable shit to come out, as are buffering 214 or 236 into some Just Frame nonsense.

But you already fucking failed the instant you threw out the word "cheap." The fuck outta here.

Megalith Aug 11, 2008 05:41 PM

I think you're talking about 4K, B. I'm probably the only Mitsurugi player that never uses that move---whenever someone blocks it, I feel like I'm going to get slammed. I know that most players use that to mix things up between 2K, B, but I'd much rather fake the 2K to an extent of actually crouching, then using 1B, B.

I hate all of these fuckin' weeaboo characters that they've been introducing since Soul Calibur II. You know the ones I'm talkin' about---the ones with moves that look like they belong in a TEKKEN game. I wish I could put characters like Talim and Amy in a can, then piss in it. The soul still burns.

Grawl Aug 11, 2008 06:29 PM

I'll go try to ask a question in between all these 'experts' - I read all around the place you have to buy characters for 4000 gold, yet I'm able to use them in story-mode and online without paying a single piece of gold (or so I believe). What's up with that?

Megalith Aug 11, 2008 06:32 PM

Well, the weeaboo characters are unlocked once you beat them in Story (Joke) Mode, but I am pretty sure that the rest (Rock, Sophitia) have to be bought.

How exactly do you buy them then? I tried with both Sophitia and Lizardman to go online, and it worked. No questions asked, unless it's a silent agreement to take 4k gold of me, which I doubt.

Scarletdeath Aug 12, 2008 07:28 PM

Go to the character creation mode to buy characters. That's basically where you buy anything.

Shenlon Aug 12, 2008 07:28 PM

I bought them from character creation, didn't bother choosing them online if I didn't buy them so I didn't know there was a loop hole in selecting them.

When I went there it said the character was unavailable/selectable (picking the first two pre-made models), yet I could use them in Story/Arcade/Online.

Scarletdeath Aug 12, 2008 07:38 PM

At the character creation mode, during the character selection, choose the grayed out characters to buy them. You should get a prompt asking if you want to buy them for 4k gold.

And this may or may not be relevant, but do you happen to have the limited edition? I don't have it myself, but maybe those characters are free in the LE version.

I have the normal version, and after some playing in the story mode nearly all of the 'locked' models has the '*N' thing above them, as if I unlocked them.

Scarletdeath Aug 12, 2008 07:51 PM

Weird, I only get the 'N' after I bought them in creation mode. I'll go restart the game with a new game save and see if that happens after a couple of runs through story. Maybe your game data is corrupted, or glitched due to something you did..

[edit] Huh, weird. I played through story twice with Cass, and I only unlocked some side characters and Algol. Soph and Liz are still locked. This is strange. Can you actually buy those 'locked' characters, or use them in story?

Megalith Aug 17, 2008 07:40 PM

Check out the upcoming DLC:

Animeruko's SC4 Images

This---oh, it's fucking rubbish. How do you even get off on this.

Scarletdeath Aug 17, 2008 07:52 PM

Why is this upcoming DLC? I already have those items. =\

DarkMageOzzie Aug 18, 2008 06:55 AM

Do you maybe have the Collector's Edition?

On the topic of the upcoming DLC... Oh no where would my gaming experience have been without the ability to make a maid. I have a feeling I'm not gonna care about any of the DLC until they add Vader.

nuttyturnip Oct 17, 2008 03:03 PM

Who's going to fork over $5 to Namco to be raped to unlock Yoda/Darth Vader?

Karasu Oct 17, 2008 03:16 PM

Im selling my SCIV. Anyone want it? I've played it about 5 times since I got it in august. I dont like it. 40 bucks to anyone who wants it.

For the ps3 btw.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Oct 18, 2008 12:35 PM

There's currently almost 100 copies of that on eBay, none going for more than $25. Good luck selling it for forty.

Karasu Oct 18, 2008 12:35 PM

lol i sold it for 25 at gamestop. Ah well.

OpTicaL Nov 5, 2008 06:43 PM

If you don't enjoy the game at least the OST is nice. Keiki Kobayashi - EPHEMERAL DREAM and Keiki Kobayashi - INNOCENT VISION. Both sound similiar but I think INNOCENT VISION has a heavier trumphet sound and EPHEMERAL DREAM is more orchestrated.

NovaX Nov 5, 2008 09:46 PM

Killer bump.
