So basically, this is a GTA-type of game, with powers and whatnot and an amnesiac hero. Anyone else who has heard of the game? Discussions et al.

Paco May 28, 2009 12:45 AM

I was going to start a thread but this one has already been made and I figure a single post thread was never really alive enough to call this thread necromancy.

New gameplay footage is available at Gametrailers.

A couple more videos of gameplay walkthroughs have been revealed on YouTube

I gotta say, this game looks to be about as fun as getting drunk and fucking the prom queen while she's doped on ecstasy. Amazon has the official release date for this as June 9th.

I wonder what, if any, multiplayer modes this game has to offer aside from co-op.

Rockgamer May 28, 2009 02:35 AM

I'm kinda interested in this game, but I'd want to play it first before investing it. I know people have been comparing it to inFamous (though people who have played both say they aren't really similar), but this game looks much better. Hell, it's pretty damn clunky just to travel around the city in inFamous, but it looks fun as hell in Prototype with all the parkour-like stuff you can do. If they release a demo for this that turns out to be good, I may actually buy this as soon as it comes out.

Jessykins May 28, 2009 04:24 PM

The co-op has been removed, Paco. Sadly.

Either way, I have been trying not to look forward to this game and buy into the hype machine, but the more I see the more I FUCKING WANT IT. FUCK IT LOOKS SO COOL.

Firefly May 29, 2009 08:31 PM

To be fair, I don't see how cooperative play would have meshed well with the story mode... now, a series of unrelated challenge scenarios in the vein of CoD:MW2's Special Forces levels is another matter.
While I'll be busy with Red Faction: Guerrilla for a while, this does look interesting. I particularly approve of the 'toolbox' making stealthy gameplay a viable option.

Single Elbow Jun 9, 2009 08:24 PM

So I have it and currently playing it.

First 5 minutes. ACTION AND ENEMIES EVERYWHERE. HOLY SHIT YOU CAN SCALE BUILDINGS, SHOVE PEDESTRIANS LIKE DOLLS, POWERS AND ABUSE OF SUCH POWERS

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFffffffffffffffff

Fast paced and a lot of action to boot. I like what I see.

Terra Jun 11, 2009 08:55 AM

You can destroy helicopters by dropkicking them or tossing pedestrians at them.

I also like what I see.

Shenlon Jun 11, 2009 09:41 AM

Trying to decide between this and infamous. I know that its not fair to compare both since the styles are completely different styles but open world games can only hold my attention for so long. I may end up just downloading it to try it out first since theres no demo.
Has anybody here played both games?

Krelian Jun 11, 2009 09:51 AM

I played the Infamous demo for half an hour, so yes, I've played both games to completion.

Chen Jun 14, 2009 07:46 AM

Beaten it yesterday , pretty awesome shit.
I think after Ill finish all the events and stuff ,i'll start new game + .

Jessykins Jun 16, 2009 02:36 PM

This game is fucking awesome. There's something infinitely satisfying about hunting down a web of intrigue target amidst a bunch of soldiers, hunters, and zombies fighting in the streets.

Paco Jun 17, 2009 07:39 PM

I've been playing this game on and off since I bought it last week. I find myself getting lost in the city without a care for the main mission. I just hope I'm not fucking up some achievement to beat the game in a certain time limit because I ain't doing SHIT to progress the story along.

Single Elbow Jun 18, 2009 03:28 AM

There ain't no New York Minute* in this game so wander away.

*GTA IV's Liberty City Minute achievement (for reference)

Dark Nation Jun 20, 2009 06:31 AM

The gameplay footage reminded me a lot of the Spider-man games. Mainly the playstation and I guess the first movie-based game, or something. Also GTA but thats a given. I know I'm late on checking this out, but probably gonna get it in the next couple of days. Looks fun. Penny Arcade of all things presented an oddly compelling argument to get it too.

Actually on second thought, I'm probably gonna wait till it drops down to $20 or 30. Still looks fun either way.

Gechmir Jun 20, 2009 08:27 AM

Playing the hell out of this game. I'm elsewhere this weekend and the game is on my PC, not laptop. Fucking pissed that I can't play  There's actually some effort in the storytelling, unlike 99% of US games. The mission that introduced hunters or whatever they're called stomped my ass like crazy though.

RUN FROM THEM!
Okay! Just gotta jump a lot--
GO IN TO THAT BUILDING NOW.
Okay!
HERE COMES ONE. ROCKET LAUNCHER IT WHILE GETTING SHOT.
Wait, what--
HE'S DEAD! ;(
Whew!
HERE COME TWO MORE!
Wait, what--
HERE COME THREE MORE!
No! D:
HERE COMES A FUCKLOAD
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

They glued to your ass and I didn't have the ability to pick shit up while running yet. As a result, I had issues. But I FINALLY beat it after dying maybe a dozen times. SO GLAD this game has checkpoints in missions, otherwise this would be shit.

They get even worse down the road. Pretty soon you'll be doing a mission where you have to use a tank and you'll have a cadre of those motherfuckers barreling down on your position while you're thinking to yourself, "Shouldn't I be out there stomping these bitches with MY MASSIVE GOD-FISTING FISTS?".

This shit is fucking bananas, son!

Single Elbow Jun 20, 2009 12:54 PM

Man, it does get progressively challenging everytime, which means it is a ton more fun than the last time around.

Get to this boss battle with a ton of hunters. Swear to christ, died more than five times.

Ramenbetsu Jun 21, 2009 12:15 PM

Have it on pc and absolutely loving the shit out of this game. Guyver dive bomb transformation AWESOME.

Jessykins Jun 21, 2009 11:48 PM

lol, I always drop what I am doing and run for landmark and hint orbs too.

Grail Jun 22, 2009 12:04 AM

I believe I took for granted how awesome helicopters are...

Cause when you fucking don't get to use any AT ALL towards a certain point, and you got about 3 or 4 tanks looking right at you with super soldiers bear hugging your ass...it gets a little tedious ;___; ESPEICALLY since you have to keep one tank alive...so fuck devistating everything

Crackdown has taught me well, this is the only way to play.

God the gameplay is fun. They really went all out in this game and made it amazingly fun to do anything. I didn't think I'd enjoy a story-based sandbox game that much (GTA and such always annoyed me because you can't really do anything except forward the story), but this game gets it right. I have fun just putting on the shield power and running around knocking pedestrians over.

The only thing I can really complain about (so far) is the controls of the tank. I don't understand why they couldn't make it more analogous to driving a car... I constantly get confused by this control scheme. Oh well driving tanks around isn't as fun anyway.

It has the same control scheme as driving vehicles in Halo. It's not as fluent because it feels stiff at times but, even my cousin (who has really only played Halo in his life) can pick it up with no problem. He's over every night to play this game because it really IS that kind of pick-up-and-play joint that's fun as fuck to play.

nuttyturnip Jun 22, 2009 10:18 AM

My only beef with the tanks is the animation that you have to sit through every time you hijack one. Sure, it adds realism, because you take damage from bullets and you/the tank could get blown up in the process, but it gets annoying when you're in a battle where you need a tank, and the pace slows to a crawl while you get in the tank.

surasshu Jun 22, 2009 10:25 AM

I guess having played Halo for 5 minutes doesn't help then, I didn't realize there was any other game that had vehicle control like this. Not a major complaint anyway since the only reason I hijack tanks is to kill them off quickly if there's a couple around, using the auto-targetting system thing. It's not like I'm driving around town with them, it's way more fun to run/jump/glide.

map car man words telling me to do things Jun 22, 2009 10:55 AM

Plenty of games have used the "point the camera in the direction you want to go" style of vehicle control since Halo. I suppose you just haven't played an FPS that also happens to have vehicles.

surasshu Jun 22, 2009 11:56 PM

I did play Half Life 2 and Far Cry 2, both of which have "accelerate/break" type controls... At least Far Cry 2 had that for sure, I'm starting to doubt whether Half Life 2 had it, now. Well anyway.

Looks like the game is selling really well--it knocked Sims 3 off the top position in the UK and also grabbed the top slot on Steam (admittedly with not much in the way of competition). Glad to see that, despite the lukewarm review scores. It's quite interesting also to see that the sales of Prototype are more steady than that of Sims 3, leading me to think that people are spreading the word about this game (whereas for the Sims I imagine most people who want it just get it, and that's that).

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jun 23, 2009 05:33 AM

Rockstar proved last year that releasing games in summer is a much better idea than releasing at christmas as there's fuck all else out at the moment so you're not really competing for sales. Sims 3 has been fairly widely panned too (At least the reviews I've read) as being pretty dull, I wouldn't have thought the people who were buying that were in the market for Prototype!

Chen Jun 23, 2009 05:13 PM

Man , just a random advice to anyone who has problem with running away from stuff.
you don't have to wait untill they stop attacking , just wait untill the light orb on the bottom turns off. quicly press the D-pad or whatever your'e using to switch into costume.
i learnt that taking a quick corner and switching into costume saves all the time of running into a high roof and destroy all the helicpoters.

Single Elbow Jun 23, 2009 05:20 PM

Aside from consume events and missions, I usually end up fighting an entire Strike Team. It's fun that way.

Zip Jun 24, 2009 03:26 PM

damn i wanna play this.. dont have a xbox overhere tho =(

And you wonder why it took folks so long to clue in to that... heck, I thought the PS3 should've been pushed back to the following summer so that not only would the logistical kinks be worked out, but MGS4 would be a launch title and help move systems.
That said, folks who like the game's tuneage should be pleased by the existence of this site.

Sjaakie Jun 25, 2009 10:06 AM

Game won't start for me for some reason and it looked like a great game. It tries to start it but I get back to desktop right away. Hope I can find something on google I really want to play!

Tijuana Jun 25, 2009 10:11 AM

Looks good, I might pick it up when I get Devil Survivor this/next week.

To play it on a computer then you need either XP SP3 or Vista SP2 I'm pretty sure. So if you're trying to play it, but don't have your Windows updated to either of those, that may be the cause of your problems.

Ramenbetsu Jun 25, 2009 10:43 PM

Stuff like this is why I got a SA account:

I just got it an installed it earlier. So far I'm REALLY enjoying the game. Mind you, the second I got the chance to roam free I decided it was time to run around town killing everything I could for 3 1/2 hours >_> I think it's pretty well done, and the story is pretty interesting to me, which is saying something since I usually don't find the story to interesting in a lot of these types of games. Oh well though, it's fun fun stuff to me.

aku08 Jul 12, 2009 11:33 AM

I think that Prototype is pretty good. The Soundtrack is Ok the gameplay is Ok but i think that they should make a second [Prototype] with a better Ai beceause from the first [Prototype] the Ai is not good

Kilroy Jul 12, 2009 11:56 AM

Though I can see what you mean, half the fun lies in running up and down some buildings while accusing other soldiers of being Mercer.
"But-but, you just ran up a building!"
"I know it's HIM!"
*Muddamuddamudda*
"Oh, well. I made a mistake..."

Do you use a joypad, or does it fare well with mouse/keyboard?

My friend bought the PC version, which I can take over for free afterwards - but for some reason I just feel that this game might be better suited for just popping into your PS3 for immediate 32" action.

I could just wait and try out the PC version of course, but I wouldn't know what I'm missing out on. Hmmm.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jul 13, 2009 01:45 AM

I picked up DarkSector for a couple bucks the other day, and there are actually a lot of similarities to Prototype (I guess considering the story material, there's a lot of easy "outs" for the writers to take).

Spoiler:
- Regular guy becomes infected with dangerous virus

- Guy is not only made stronger and faster by virus, but is also given the ability to generate weapons from his arms

- Guy fights military that seeks to put down the outbreak through mass murder

- Guy also fights infected that become violent and zombie-like, as well as super-mutated giants

- Military utilizes airborne chemical agent that, while harmless to healthy individuals, is deadly to infected

Not saying the games are clones, just finding the story similarities in the first hour of DarkSector humorous. Prototype plays better as a superhero sandbox game than as a poor man's Gears of War with a boomerang.

That's true. I still mourn the loss of the original Dark Sector game, though. The one set on a space ship with japanese drums in the background.
