What Is Your Favorite Color?

I'm making this poll so that I can test a theory of mine. But it's a common enough question, I imagine other people might be curious about the numbers too.

What is your favorite color?

If you're one of those people who has their favorite color narrowed down to a particular tint or shade, just choose the basic color from which it's derived. If your favorite color is between two basic colors, such as turquoise or plum, decide which basic color your preference is closer to and select that one.

Because people are lazy, spammy posts in this thread will be given infractions. I'm saying it right here. Don't get all indignant and act like there was no warning. Not trying to be a jerk but a post consisting entirely of "Mine's red." just doesn't cut it.

If you post, try to discuss why you like the color you chose. Explain why you prefer it over other colors. Maybe there are pleasant memories attached to blue. Maybe you've always been a serious person and brown feels very natural. These things interest me.

Wall Feces Nov 26, 2007 12:56 PM

I prefer black, which is the absence of color. It doesn't have to do with :emo: or anything, I think it's just the simplicity of it. I'm all for simplicity and minimalism when it comes to design and visuals, and black is as minimalist as it gets. Also, I look really good wearing it.

I've also been a huge fan of blue my entire life, but I think black commands more power over me than blue does nowadays.

You've got it backward. In artistic terms, black is the product of combining all colors. White is considered to be the absence of color.

Perhaps, as a filmmaker, you were thinking about it in terms of light, wherein white contains all color until it is refracted, and black is the absence of light?

kat Nov 26, 2007 01:20 PM

Since I was a kid, I've really liked red. I mean I really really liked red, any bit of red, I went nuts over. And somehow, everyone knows this so all the crap people gift me is red. Then a couple years ago, I made an casual observation that okay, a lot of Chinese people like red. It's for a multitude of reasons, red is the color of good fortune, prosperity, celebration and communism.

I teach a literacy class for immigrants and all the China ones go batshit over the color red. It makes me feel uncomfortable since I can just imagine my passion for red is a roundabout way of supporting Mao and his buddies.

So I've been wearing a lot of purple lately. But I voted red, since my secret shame is of a sanguine hue.

orion_mk3 Nov 26, 2007 01:25 PM

My favorite has long been purple, but in middle school I learned the hard way that the color has some...associations...that I don't really care for. So I adopted blue as a closely-related but less controversial alternative to use around idots and those interested in becoming idiots.

But since GFF itself is gloriously purple, I don't think that's an issue.

Couldn't tell you why I like it, though I later learned that purple is the traditional color of emperors and royalty and was made from boiling rare sea-slug guts.

As a photographer, that's what I was thinking.

I picked blue because it is such a calming an tranquil color. It reminds me of all of my favorite things, like the ocean, the sky, and cool temperatures. It is smooth and easy on the eyes and not harsh like the colors toward the red end of the spectrum. Deep cerulean blues are the best. The blue color of moonlight is also very beautiful to me. I always go for walks on those nights when the moon is full.

knkwzrd Nov 26, 2007 01:40 PM

Sometimes I look at something that's black and think... How much more black could that be? And the answer is none. None more black.

Monkey King Nov 26, 2007 01:41 PM

It'll be interesting to see what the poll looks like when more people respond. I've heard that yellow is supposed to be the least favorite of all colors.

I picked green, though I can't think of any specific reason why I like it. Maybe because I live in a 1 acre forest, the last defiant stand of the wilderness among the suburbs that have grown up around us.

Dullenplain Nov 26, 2007 01:44 PM

There is no specific hue I consider my favorite, but I have a strong affinity towards darker, rich colors like the blue seen in the sky at night (or the background color of GFF), deep greens of certain plants, the brown of fertile soil . . . This is reflected in my choice of clothing which tend to run along darker shades more often than their brighter counterparts.

LordsSword Nov 26, 2007 01:53 PM

Blue. Mega Man, Sonic, Sparkster.
I identify with blue more because in my days as a kid I wore blue often. I see blue as a heros color.

Paco Nov 26, 2007 01:58 PM

I rather like black & white myself. I know this sounds cliche as fuck but I just love the color juxtaposition of putting those two colors together in, well, anything. I wear black dress shirts with white ties all the time and vice versa. I have all white guayaberas which I pair with black dress slacks and this pretty much makes up the majority of my wardrobe. I have other colors of clothes as well though and a lot of those tend to fall into the lighter shades for shirts and darker shade for my pants.

Things just look good in black and white, as long as it's done tastefully.

gidget Nov 26, 2007 05:48 PM

When I was younger my answer to this question was always blue. I'm not sure why I liked it, I just did. I still like the color, but I like it less now because I can't wear it. Every shade of blue that I try to wear looks terrible on me. I can, however, wear black.

I also use black pens as opposed to blue. It's not because they're more common, it's because I hate the way blue ink (from standard pens) looks on paper. I think it's because it never matches the shade of the blue lines on the paper. So I chose black.

I also like black because it hides my chub better.

Plarom Nov 26, 2007 05:52 PM

Black, crimson, and gold.

I remember asking my mother when I was a child what her favorite colors were. She responded with 'black and gold' because she loved the way they looked together. Later on, I adopted the same liking.

I agree with CJ. Black ink looks much better than blue.

Anazai Nov 26, 2007 05:54 PM

I love green. When I'm wearing it it goes really well with my eyes, any shade of green is fine except for puke green. No other reason than that I guess. ;-)

No. Hard Pass. Nov 26, 2007 05:55 PM

See, my initial gut reaction was black and gold. It's the colour of my bruins, a team I latched onto as a child largely due to the colouring. I dig the combination, but as I thought about it, I had to defy your conventions, Crash. Because my colour is half yellow and half brown. It's sepia. I shoot in it, I colour with it, and combine it with black and it's my favourite thing to see on a screen ever. I have a ton of clothes that combine it, and a lot of my binders and things have a very black and sepia combination. Like black with faded gold.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Nov 26, 2007 06:03 PM

I've always had a thing for green. It's fantastic in the clothes I wear, it's beautiful in nature, and there are just so many hues of it.

It also strikes me as a pacifistic color. I can't imagine getting angry when seeing green. It puts me in a relaxed frame of mind, and not to be incredibly stupid, but it reminds me of the outdoors. Fresh air, cool breezes, and pleasant memories.

Dalkaen Nov 26, 2007 06:04 PM

My favorite color has been purple for a long time. Not really sure why, but I especially like dark, bluish purples. I'm a fan of the Gamingforce skin, yes. My least favorite color is probably orange. But y'know, all colors have their place and can look nice when juxtaposed in certain ways.

Precisely. In dealing with film, color is determined by light. Absense of light = Absense of color, and so on in that fashion. Glad you picked up on that, though. We filmmakers think differently from you other artsy types ;)

Bernard Black Nov 26, 2007 06:37 PM

I've always been partial to black. When my friends and family buy me clothes they scout out all the black items as a precursor to choosing a style. Apparently there's a psychological basis to my liking for that shade/colour, but I think that's bullshit. You can lose yourself completely in black, it's so empty, void-like. I find it very relaxing.

niki Nov 26, 2007 06:41 PM

I am honestly unable to answer that question anymore. I like certain colours on certain things, at certain times, and combined with certain others. Picking one has become something my brain just refuses to do. =/

Backwards, I think, is the word I had thrown at me by my fine arts friend once.

Angel of Light Nov 26, 2007 07:13 PM

I've always liked black and white for quite a long period of time but over the last 5 years my favourite colour has been white. I guess it really started when my first gf use to call me her guardian angel.

Angel has just been a persona that I've had with my a lot of my friends especially over the last few years. I like white because of the many elements it represents but it is all a matter of perception. Different people can put different meanings toward each and every colour.

To me white symbolizes purity, serenity a colour that is untouched and not really noticed quite a lot. It kind of fades into the background which is what really defines me, I'm not one to try to be the center of attention; a lot of times I just want to fade into the background. I like the look of freshly fallen snow. I just like the colour because white is the colour that symbolizes an angel. I have a white DS, and I have a few white dress shirts and anytime I go working out I wear white the majority of the time.

I'm always been the type of person that has tried to live my life for the good of everyone else, despite a lot of people giving me a hard time about it. I do try my best to look after myself from time to time but I take a lot of pride taking time out of schedule to help people. A lot of friends label me as an angel because I'm willing to lend a helping hand and don't really expect anything in return.

Celes Chere Nov 26, 2007 07:31 PM

Deep purple is my favorite color but I also like sky blue. Pink is okay in moderation. I usually like soft colors because they're calming, but deep purple is my favorite. Who knows why.

I hate puke green. :(

No one understands our sense of humour.

I'd also have accepted a reference to Lionel Richie's video for "Hello."

Ozma Nov 27, 2007 03:22 AM

No grey heh? THAT'S my favourite colour.

Well, I do like all kinds of green and white, but for me, grey is hard to let go.

Karasu Nov 27, 2007 03:29 AM

I've always loved blue. Most shades of blue are just beautiful to me, except maybe the darker ones at times [no offense GFF lol]. It seems like a very...pure, clean color to me.

Fire On Ice Nov 27, 2007 04:30 AM

I like any colour as long as it's really solid. I'm not a fan of pastel shades and "Eggshell" kinds of colours and all that. Red is probably my favourite because it's closely associated with all of the local sports teams, especially the Sens and I've been a fan since I was 4.

Acacia Nov 27, 2007 09:44 AM

I voted for black, but I also really like reds and blues. Definitely not a huge fan or yellows or purples (not really sure why), and greens and oranges are alright.

Like Fire On Ice, I like the solid/darker shades; don't really enjoy pastels/tints, personally.

Black is such a fun "color" to work with; whether you're using it in drawings, paintings, or anything else. In its pure form it's really strong, but when you dilute it, you can get some amazing greys and whites. And, when paired with another color, makes that color much more vivid (there's a term for this that was in my psychology book, but I don't remember it...).

Don't know if it works for EVERY SINGLE color, but black goes well with everything! Plus, I have this association that those in power and/or those with wealth or style wear black (it's a very 'professional' color haha)

Dekoa Nov 27, 2007 10:51 AM

I voted for Blue BTW.

Also I found this neat little site that I think would be perfect for us GFFers.

ColorWare

Basically, you can color your Game console, Mac Products, and some other things to the color or colors of your choosing. I would love to get an iPod from these people.

Metal Sphere Nov 27, 2007 10:58 AM

I have to go ahead and agree with Fire On Ice and Acacia. Solid colors definitely get my pick over those that are somewhere in between. Of those, Blue is my favorite with Red coming in a close second.

For some reason ole Red looks a lot better to me now than it has before, especially alongside white (I feel the same way about Blue).

nazpyro Nov 27, 2007 11:26 AM

:orange:

Yeah, my favorite color is orange. Probably induced from my childhood obsession with Michaelangelo (TMNT FTW). He's been my favorite turtle, so I was always a follower of the orange bandanna. Orange is also a color of fire, which goes back to my pyromantic days of high school... maybe? "nazpyro" what up.

And for whatever reason, purple is also a favorite color of mine, probably due to it being one of my high school's colors.

the quiet fox Nov 27, 2007 01:11 PM

While I will say different things at different times when asked what my favorite color is, ultimately I believe it comes down to blue for me. Blue is the color that, when I am in a creative mood, really excites me. I'm not sure how to explain it. When I am inspired to write something, I will think of colors along with subject, presentation, etc. I'll get really charged up when I feel like writing something "blue" - this is generally something upbeat, positive, or pop-culture oriented. The specific color is more of a sky blue than anything else, I suppose, and I also think it's telling about my personality that I will tend to gravitate toward writing of this sort. This also pops up in wallpaper choices for my computer. Blue and white both feature prominently in my favorite wallpapers, but when I look at them it's not the white I focus on, but the accents of blue that really give it life.

I've said in the past that my favorite color is red, or black, or green, but in the end I don't think any of those colors resonate with me as continually as blue does.

Chaotic Nov 27, 2007 01:21 PM

Despite my likeness for the colors of fire and everything that goes with it, I suppose I'll have to roll with blue.

Blue is just a nice calm color that pretty much goes with everything for me. In terms to clothing, blue jeans just seem to go with whatever outfit you please. I guess the color also gives me a sense of peace, calm, and serenity. It also counters all the random anger I have towards everything, I guess bringing my likeness of color to red, but ya know, blue overpowers it. :3:

DarkMageOzzie Nov 27, 2007 01:28 PM

Blue.... NO! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

Seriously though, my favorite color is black. When I was a kid, I usually cheered for the villains when watching cartoons and villains have a tendency to wear black. Now, well black clothing goes good with just about anything so...

Nall Nov 27, 2007 06:25 PM

I have a hard time making decisions on anything, and picking a favorite color is kinda hard, but I if I *had* to chose (and right now, I do), I'm going to go with... ORANGE.

Orange is a pretty cool color. It was named after the fruit, but before then it was Red-Yellow, so, just like me, it simply can't make up its mind. It's also bright and vibrant, which I like, and unique: nothing at all rhymes with it.

Orange is also more flexible than people realize. It can be bold and colorful like fire, or faded and rustic like sepia tones. According to psychic dynamics, a person with an orange aura is cheerful and passionate about intellectual pursuits. The color shifts in and out of my personal favorites list from time to time, but I think I'll stand by it for this poll. Orange you glad of that?

TheReverend Nov 27, 2007 06:35 PM

Blue.

It wasn't always so. When I was younger, green was definitely my favorite. But I started to realize later that there are shades of green that I don't like. Pukeish green (which has been mentioned before), bile green, and a very bright green can be overbearing and even just annoying at times.

Blue, on the other hand, has literally no bad shade that I can think of. Even Superman blue looks great with appropriate colors. Also, blue is the color of some of the greatest things that exist: sky, ocean, jeans, particularly. It's a very, proactive color while not being overly active (reds-yellows). And in darker shades it's the best.

Also blue eyes are rockin'.

Acro-nym Nov 28, 2007 09:19 AM

Red is vibrant and passionate. It stands for romance, bloodshed, and anger. It's a versatile color. That's not to say I possess all the same traits, but the fact that I possess almost none of them suits me, I think. It's a complimentary thing.

I am disappointed that it is doing so poorly in this poll.
