NiGHTS: Into Dreams headed to PS2

Looks like Sega's planning on porting NiGHTS to the PS2, and going from the articles it looks like it'll at least have updated visuals and 16:9 support.

This isn't just a port of the Sega Saturn classic. Visually, Sega is upgrading the visuals to PS2 standards, and even adding 16x9 wide screen support. There's no mention in Famitsu of new levels, but Sega is adding an illustration gallery and a movie viewer mode.

GREATEST. NEWS. EVER.

I love NiGHTS. It's not one of the most innovative games ever made, but it is one of the most stylish, and it's defiitely fun. I really enjoyed it, and Christmas NiGHTS. I still play them every so often, but I don't have the analogue controller for my Saturn anymore.

^-^ Nov 20, 2007 10:49 AM

WHAT!? Are you serious!? Oh my....

My word! This is going to be an awsome year for me!

Slayer X Nov 20, 2007 10:56 AM

It would be better if it had a slated US date. But at least they're making it. I guess I can always just import it if it doesn't.

But yeah, when it comes stateside, it's gonna be SWEET!!

^-^ Nov 20, 2007 11:00 AM

Import or not, I was going to get it anyways. I CANNOT WAIT*(#@

*edit* apparently someone told me it comes with upscaling and p.scan support on the "Sega Ages" franchise so~ oh man good day indeed.

Yeah, this news is great but I'd like it to come over. I don't know the chances of that happening, though.

Monkey King Nov 20, 2007 11:39 AM

If it comes stateside I imagine I'll have to look into it, since I was never a Saturn owner. I am going to be seriously pissed at you all if this isn't the second coming of video gaming, though. I don't think FF7 is exalted to this degree.

If the game really is on the Sega Ages label (nothing on the official site yet), we can also look forward to a new soundtrack release as per their tradition. It's gonna be rockin', too!

NiGHTS was one of those rare gems for the Saturn, I hope they do a good job on bringing it over tot he PS2. The Dual Shock analog stick may actually be pretty good for it.

RainMan Nov 20, 2007 11:56 AM

I've always wanted this game but never wanted to dish out the money for a Saturn. This is indeed great news!

map car man words telling me to do things Nov 20, 2007 12:10 PM

So.. they'll gladly remake NiGHTS (not that I'm ungrateful), but never Panzer Dragoon Saga or Burning Rangers? :(

I'm not too fond of this updating graphics to PS2 standards they do. Virtua Racing, Space Harrier and such looked awful AND lacked the old school charm or their original looks. With this the difference won't be quite so glaring, but a big part of the game's charm will be down to how well they do with the visuals. That and how well the Dual Shock handles the controls.

Cheezeman3000 Nov 20, 2007 01:22 PM

I'm hearing rumors the original will also be included in the upcoming Wii sequel. Just rumors though from random messageboard trolls. So don't look into it at all.
Also hearing rumors they'll bring it to the virtual console, which is more likely to me.
Either way, it's been confirmed in one form! And that is always good news.

surasshu Nov 20, 2007 02:39 PM

This could potentially be awesome, but I'm sort of iffy about it. For me, the thing that made this game so much more awesome than any other game was the music and the way the game "felt", as well as the design. Now, I'm sure they'll keep the design, but the way the game felt and the music engine... I'm not so sure, since I've never seen that engine used anywhere in Sega games since. I'm worried that they don't even really remember what it was like.

I'm sort of the same way with the Wii game, although that really looks amazing from what I've seen so I'm cautiously optimistic about that one. But Sega isn't exactly known for their amazing remakes. I even have a Puyo set now and I was sure they could never ruin that game, but Puyo Puyo Fever is inhumanly retarded. It's beyond belief how shitty it is. That's what I worry about, that they'll manage to make it suck.

Nevertheless it'll be something I'll have to keep an eye on. =D

Panzer Dragoon Saga, the RPG, not the shooters. Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon Zwei are on Sega Ages as far as I know.

Burning Rangers was indeed one of the best games I ever played for the Saturn. I cherish my copy as though it were made of gold.

Sega's idea of PS2 graphics can be pretty fucking scary at times. I mean look at their other 2008 hit, Sonic Riders 2: The Revenge of Dreamcast Development Kit.

This is still awesome though, because more people need to experience NiGHTS. And PS2 has sold slightly better than the Saturn!

Karasu Nov 21, 2007 08:45 AM

Wow, my heart just exploded with happiness. Its most likely not gonna be ported to America, but FUCK THAT I'm so getting this when it comes out. Great great news you got MS.

Hmm, I forgot Virtual On also came out last month.

S_K Nov 21, 2007 12:04 PM

I only ever played the demo of the original so I can understand the appeal at least to some extent, this with virtual on might well be the last great games for PS2 :( then again I do find it amusing how PS2 is still releasing so many worthwhile games while everything else has moved on, not that it's a bad thing, it's just like everyone but Sony knows what a fuck up they made of the PS3

Oh hell yes Panzer needs a rehash of some kind, I was playing that when it came out before I even knew what an RPG was. I don't fully understand the appeal of burning rangers looking back though, blowing dust of the old box to try it again more then anything else the voice acting of the two main characters makes my ears bleed now, for a remake to work they would need a to change quite a lot imo.

One other game deserves mention for the remake treatment though, Guardian Heroes! Excluding the shite emo GBA game, for me that game was the beat em up equivalent of final fantasy. If that game had appeared on a system like the Playstation I bet it would have 10+ sequels too =P

Solis Nov 21, 2007 05:41 PM

Wow, didn't expect to see this game revived. The updated graphical/widescreen support will be nice to see, and I'm hoping they'll at least include surround sound as well (this is one of the few games with 2d gameplay that could actually benefit from that). I wonder what else of the game will be updated, maybe a few extra paths and such? Although I have a feeling this isn't going to be seen outside Japan anyway so maybe I shouldn't get too excited for it.

But I do agree that Burning Ranger and Panzer Dragoon Saga should be given makeovers as well, although the amount of effort it would take to completely remake an RPG would be a bit astronomical for a budget title like these Sega Ages things (or whatever they call them in Japan). Burning Rangers is probably the only decent "firefighting" game in existence.

Oh fuck I am so getting this. The visuals seem kinda "bleh" by today's standards but I've seen video of the ORIGINAL game in action and that IS a big improvement.

(Why don't they port it to the Wii as well?)

RacinReaver Nov 26, 2007 05:47 AM

I always wanted to play the original since I've heard so much about it, pretty stoked to see I might actually have a chance to give the game a shot!

True, but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for an 'enhanced' remake to appear on the Wii later. Like Okami, the gameplay just seems very fitting for the Wii's motion sensing tech.

The PS2 is probably so that more people can see the game period, as its one of the most widely distributed systems to date, so there's a good chance someone who wants to check out the game will be able to. I don't know anyone who doesn't either Have a PS2, or at least has played one.

I think there might be one or two people on here though, but I'm not sure.

I'd wager it's more like Sony and Microsoft sneering at the idea of putting such an old game on a next gen system. "Looks like crap on HD!" or some nonsense like that.

bahamuty Dec 16, 2007 09:43 PM

Never expected Nights to be ported. My guess is Sega is trying to get more people in the Nights series because of the Wii game coming out. I'll certaintly import it if I can pick it up cheap enough.

Frozen Memories Dec 17, 2007 02:44 AM

I'm surprized that NiGHTS is getting any recognition from Sega at all. It was a bit of a cult hit, at least, that's what I've heard of it. But, now, not only is it getting a long awaited sequel, but also a port of the original? I just hope Sega doesn't mess it up.

Of course, getting excited about the port wouldn't matter much... If it's really part of the Sega Ages series, then it's doubtful it'll hit Stateside, at least, in that form. There's always the Virtual Console, though.

Infernal Monkey Dec 17, 2007 03:05 AM

Of course they'll mess it up. Who do you think this is? Old Sega? It's new Sega, baby! There'll be a new exclusive level set in a warehouse or something, and flying is out, jeeps are in. Cruise dreams in style!

Monkey King Dec 17, 2007 01:06 PM

Don't forget the innovate new lock-on system for use with the 16 different varieties of guns that you can acquire now.

Infernal Monkey Dec 25, 2007 06:21 AM

Bumping this to push NiGHTS 2 Journey of Sega's Rape off the planet. The official site's updated with things. Things and stuff. They'll also be including the original untouched Saturn NiGHTS on the disc. Just because, I guess. COMPARISON TIME.

Well, from those screenshots, it looks like the game's already almost all in English, so even if it doesn't get confirmed for the US or Europe (or Australia, Infernal), we can always import/download it.

Karasu Dec 25, 2007 11:07 AM

Being as I had the Japanese import, there were no Japanese characters in it, so Im sure the game will be all in english no problem. The Screenshots look great though, and as long as the music stays intact and/or sounds better...I think i'll be all set there. It comes out in Feb. right?

Well, the original version was also completely in english, except for speech and minor crap like that nobody cares about.

Now that I think about it, is the storyline actually explained in-game?

You said you "had the Japanese import". This game isn't out yet and the only Japanese import of NiGHTS which is in English is the Wii version so you were obviously talking about it.

Anyway, I'll wind up importing this if it's good. I'll wait for reviews though. The NiGHTS for Wii is just average.

That might be possible. I don't know whether or not the Japanese Saturn version of NiGHTS was in English or not though. It probably doesn't matter regardless, I mean it isn't as if this game has any text past menus and introduction screens.

Well, the original version is being packed in with the remake, so at worst it won't be a total loss.

Squib Jan 8, 2008 01:31 AM

Can someone explain to me what's so good about nights? I missed it on the genesis (that's what it was on, right?) and I always hear everyone praising it. I've tried watching videos on youtube to see what it's like and it seems like you're just flying around in a linear path. I'm missing something, I'm sure.

Infernal Monkey Jan 8, 2008 02:03 AM

Actually it was on the Game Gear. nIghts is a game you pretty much have to play to understand why it gets so much love (I myself wear a shirt with Yuji Naka's face on it, his eyes have been replaced with hearts). Internet videos fail to capture the raw emotion of the machine gun totting bonus levels, and the power-ups that let you fly around the world in true 3D while trance music produces explosions of colour that soak into the landscape (goggles required).

It's a fairly simple game, yeah, but it has really good replay value as your sexual desire to constantly improve upon your score and such goes on!

Torte Jan 8, 2008 04:48 AM

I dunno whether I should even bother pre-ordering the special edition. I mean, it's just an art book.

Considering this is NiGHTS, I would've thought that, you know, an OST would just make more sense.

evilboris Feb 21, 2008 05:34 PM

Oh hi, the game is out.
Things I noticed:
- First thing you need to do is enable Autosave or it will bug you about saving every time.
- Saturn mode and BRAND NEW MODE are selectable right from the start. New mode is the gfx upped mode.
- Saturn mode is not 100% like the saturn - textures still look like they are filtered. The dithered "checkerboard" transparency was changed to real transparency. Music uses streaming audio, no idea if it changes as you play the levels cause I could never get that thing working. Backgrounds seem a bit less detailed, maybe because the Saturn handled these much different.
- New mode doesnt look that good - sure its just a PS2 game but I've seen better quality textures and sharper graphics.
- Claire grew tits
- Elliot is still a fag
- Xmas Nights is unlocked once you complete the game with all characters, with at least C rating on all levels.
- Xmas Nights is incredibly stripped down. None of the presents are there, save for the gallery which is accessible from the main menu anyway. That means no Sonic, no link mode, no karaoke mode, no music test, etc.

Unless there are more unlockables, for getting all As or so, I think I maxed out the game in 1 or 2 hours. Good job, Sega...

Also, something hilarious: half of the data on the disc is taken up by 8 different credit roll fmvs.

Soluzar Feb 22, 2008 09:52 PM

Oh shit, it's OUT?!?! Damn, I have to hit Play-Asia right about now, be right back.

I'm deeply dissapointed to note that none of the presents are included for Christmas NiGHTS. I was hoping that they'd include everything that was in the original. I like my Saturn as much as the next guy, but this game was made to be played with a decent analogue stick, and that means... NOT the one that was included with the game.
