It's Chatwin vs. Marsters in Dragon Ball Z - ComingSoon.net

from what I heard in comingsoon Ando (from heroes) auditioned for yamcha :/
the movie is supposedly not going to be out till 2010 so for now its on my "I don't care" listings.

Zeta26 Nov 15, 2007 07:18 PM

Well, if they play their cards right. Then it will be on my possible movies to see list.

Paper Crane Nov 25, 2007 03:49 PM

Bleh, Tom Cruise's son and Spike as stars? That seems like a terrible idea. Here is the IMDB Dragonball Z (2008)
James Wong is directing it, he did Jet Li's 'The One' so who knows, it might be good, it might be god awful, it might have a POWER LEVEL OF 9,000?!?!?!?

15 August 2008
But I doubt it will be anywhere near done by then.

Predictions: The movie will be sub-par at best but it will make hundreds of millions due to it well, being Dragon Ball Z, which is probably one of most well known Japanese animated shows in America.

I think they're about 5 years too late to really cash in on DBZ's popularity.

Prediction: The Naruto movie will also be about 5 years too late.

Yes, and it's not just talk like it was for the past 5 years. It's actually in pre-production.

What KrelEN said about everyone getting help for this some-time-in-the-future event.

Honestly, I hardly see how they can do a decent/not-humiliating/actually-watchable movie of DBZ, I mean... it's just a massive disaster on the works.

Btw, I consider myself a positive person, and I did enjoy DBZ like 1245676884 years ago.

When I was little and watched DBZ, I often thought of what the live-action would be like. But a Chatwin playing Goku; I'm just not feeling it...

Elegy Dec 12, 2007 10:01 AM

I really loved the anime and manga for DBZ when I was a kid, but this is going to be embarrassing. I really do feel sorry for James Marsters. The guy is talented, but always gets the worst roles on earth.

S_K Dec 12, 2007 09:09 PM

I've been hearing rumours for ages about this, every time I think of the concept as a film that final fight from the 3rd Matrix film or Kungfu Hustle always pops into my head, because let's be honest the standards of entertainment are only going to be about that level at best for anyone who is not a hardcore fanboy/fangirl. When it comes down to it without pretty much rewriting the whole storyline to something more practical for a single film, this film is just grade A cash cow material nothing more nothing less.

Well... at least he gets to be the coolest character out of the whole series.

I do like Piccolo , but Vegeta is still my favorite! I just can't imagine Marsters in a costume with all the makeup looking like Piccolo and actually trying to be taken with an ounce of sincerity. Then again, I thought Nightcrawler looked pretty awesome in those stupid X-Men movies, so who knows...

Why. God... just what we need. Piccolo and Goku fighting in the lunchroom cafeteria and Chi-Chi looking like a cheerleading slut. :| Wonder how the hell they're going to explain Gohan... unless this is supposed to take place after Dragonball but before Dragonball Z (in which I could have sworn Goku was in late 20s to early 30s...)

Park Joon-hyung of G.O.D fame will be part of the big budget Hollywood adaption of the super popular Japanese based manga Dragonball.

“Joon Park”, as he is called in the U.S., will play bad boy Yamcha, a thief turned Z fighter. Also, Emmy Rossum recently signed up to play Bulma, a scientist and inventor whose father’s Dragon Ball is stolen by the villain, Piccolo. And Eriko Tamura, the popular Japanese actress who depicted Yaeko in popular TV series “Heroes”, will play the character of Mai.

The cast also includes Justin Chatwin, James Marsters and Jamie Chung.

I have a feeling the movie will be shot using a green screen similar to 300 for the setting of the movie. That's a wild guess, but I think that'd be pretty cool if they went for something like that.

If this movie actually makes it through production, no joke, I will definately be there on the first day crying very, very nostalgic tears of joy. No matter how horrible the execution is.

yet another trailer and some changes to the previous one.
Like the piccollo, looks like they tinted his skin to make him look light greenish unless it's just the lighting. Also, they're showing off some more stunts with super special obvious wire effects. I know the wires are for safe stunts but not for lame action.
And did they make Mai a Shapeshifter?

Oh and of course the title change. "It's not dragonball Z anymore this is the OC with powers, we're evolving. So lets stick it with a cliche subtitle. DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION. get it?"

:savepoint: lame kamehameha

Mirei Dec 12, 2008 06:55 PM

The movie for DBZ looks horrible. It makes the anime look bad.

Diversion Dec 13, 2008 03:17 AM

I never remember any point in DB or DBZ where Goku ever had the attitude "I'm not ready for this". He was always doing shit that made Roshi surprised. His character is always looking for the next challenge no matter how hard. And way to change the origin of the Dragon Balls, 7 mystics? WTF.

Vemp Dec 13, 2008 11:47 PM

But I do like the cheesy trailer for it's cheesy action scenes and lulz.

The way I see this movie is: This movie is like a big piece of chocolate cake for a person who is on a diet. It looks good from a distance and you treat it as a guilty pleasure. Deep down you know its bad for you and your going to feel guilty for even looking at it. Nothing good is going to come out of it.

Will I see it; more than likely.
Will I enjoy it; highly doubtful

To even strengthen the argument that this movie will probably suck, there have been a whole bunch of scenes released from the movie. I guess they need anything to try to build any kind of hype for this movie.

Wow. Really?

I wouldn't even say it looked good from a distance.

I compare it to a poorly baked chocolate cake using a good recipe.

It looks like a great idea when its on paper. But then you eventually put everything together. After you bake it it winds up looking like shit.

Well from this take, this is supposed to be Dragon Ball, and not Dragon Ball Z.

But then again, I'm not sure they could cast an 8 year old and have him pull off everything the younger goku could.

I used to watch Dragonball and DBZ back in the days of me being a teen, and while I enjoyed the show for what it was (nothing but fighting and grunts), I don't think this movie will shine on the series in a negative way.

I mean, if you think DBZ was a massive spectacle of animation and storytelling, you need to get your head checked.

My only qualm (if you can even call it that) is that Roshi won't be perverted in anyway in this movie, and is Mr. Super Serious...but I could be pleasantly surprised...Chow Yun Fat hasn't failed me yet.

Have you seen the second clip posted above labeled "goku vs roshi".
Roshi might the only character thats portrayed closest to the anime. Shows perverted-ness, thinks highly of himself, acts like an energetic old man.

Grail Mar 12, 2009 07:23 PM

Well, there we go. Chow Yun Fat doesn't fail me >.>.

I'll more than likely enjoy this movie due to the fact they did at least try to capture the spirit of the show, instead of making it a carbon copy. It's just going to be a light hearted martial arts movie, that's it.

Other than Chow Yun Fat, the woman who plays Bulma seems to portray her pretty well, although I can see at times she's -way- too serious about it.

FatsDomino Mar 23, 2009 09:00 AM

If I didn't have a completely shitty connection it would be fun to do something like mogulus.

Grail Mar 26, 2009 12:12 AM

I have this awful genetic defect that handicaps me from ever really viewing a movie as a 'bad movie'. For the most part I always find some sort of redeeming factor in every single movie I watch, whether it's "Titanic" to "House of the Dead" to "The Wizard of Oz". The only two movies to that exception, that I flat out would never watch again with a gun to my head is "Disaster Movie" and "Alone in the Dark".

That being said, and after I finally sat down and watched the shitty quality, I didn't think that the movie was that bad in terms of what it actually is. If you look hard enough with what they changed from the manga/anime to fit a more 'widespread' audience, they still kept somewhat to the source material. Chi-chi's a rich daddy's girl who knows how to fight, Roshi still technically lives on an island surrounded by water, so forth and so on.

The dialogue/acting had it's hang-ups, but this movie suffers from every Live action adaptation of an anime or a game or whatever...and that it is too fast paced and tries to cram in too much.

Spoiler:
I will admit, however, that the last fight was pretty underwhelming, and when I was expecting a good 5 minute fight, it was more of a one minute special effects cannon. I was halfway expecting something along the lines of Roshi taking Goku into the time chamber (I know that was never in Dragonball, but it's a hell of a lot better than saying the monkey within gave him extra power).

Once they opted to make Goku a skinny white guy all bets were off. There's really nothing important they could have kept from the comics other than the general spirit plus DBZ sucks dragonball was fun

well brady if it makes you feel any worse this movie is based on Dragon Ball for the most part and not Z

and the way it ends it sets itself up for a sequel

I remember Frieza being in it, or something.

Either way dragonball rules and this movie is gonna rule

Too bad it couldn't be on a streaming site with a chatbox so we could start off the week with a GFF Bad Movie Sunday.

Seriously LoLing at Oozaru.
Oh and come on, the fucking dragon, couldn't they just stretch the crap out of him. There is no image they got right, it was just a teen humping movie.

Everything in this movie was way too small, and seriously, why couldn't Krillin just be in it? Is it that hard to find a midget guy? Seriously, who the fuck needs Yamcha?

Shenlon Mar 26, 2009 08:05 AM

well, they don't meet krillen until after the introduce bulma and yamcha so maybe they just tried to keep their meeting in order. And even if they did get a krillen we know they'd take the other route and make him as tall as goku with very short hair.

That aside, doesn't anyone feel that this really wasn't for a "New Audience". I mean just look at the end. Goku's story was told in less than ten second and was never talked about again so it was obviously for people who knew the material.
And also, goku and chi chi hardly had any screen time together and yet they wanted hump each other through the whole film.
Oh wait but maybe this part was correct, chi chi was interested in goku at first sight in the dragonball series wasn't she?

It's Piccolo in this movie. I guess Emperor Pilaf wouldn't have been cool enough.

They did take the whole 'late teens' Goku instead of the youngest of course.

Call me crazy, but I would have rather had that then trying to watch some 10 year old trying to fight big bad guys.

I know its not perfect or even looks corny, but I like the style in which Astro Boy is being made and I wouldn't have minded seeing dragonball being made this way. I mean it was a kids movie to start with right? I just think 3d animation would have been a good step and even a 10 year old goku would have been fun to watch this way
