Wii Discussion Thread: Lukage is a whiny prat

So there's this thing called the Wii. I hear rumor that it has new games and old games from your Intellivision.

At night it'll glow blue and turn into some sort of gay Transformer that does jumping jacks and only jumping jacks. But that's okay because it only costs a penny to make so it's like a million times profit even sold at $10.99 on Amazon.com.

You use some sort of piece of chalk and a dog leash to perform light saber battles, so it's alot like MacGyver meets Muppet Babies imagination time. Gonzo still doesn't get Piggy, and really why does a toddler have such a sexual attraction to a piglet anyway? That can't be healthy.

Speaking of healthy there's a game coming out that comes with plastic pom-poms that connect to the bottom of that piece of chalk which are also made of chalk even though I just said they're plastic. Nintendo is pretty amazing like that. Right, so apparently this wonder chalk material cures cancer and brings people back from the dead but since this cheerleader game has even more chalk it'll also give you an instant six pack and a boner. "It's a really great boner too!" said an inside source who wishes to remain nameless.

Yeah, so given this exciting information the Wii is what this thread is about. Discuss. Discuss.

Hey, look, I found Donkey Kong. :revolution:

A... A Wii Discussion thread? Why... what a rare occasion! Well since no one's reported this in the forums (I'm guessing everyone has read it on the internet), I shall do the honors of posting some new Wii news to add to this promising (and hopefully long-lasting) Wii thread!

---Photo Channel Updates in December---
"Official Nintendo Schmizzles and Shebangs"

For the lazy:
1) Apparently Nintendo will be taking out MP3 compatibility for AAC files (aka MP4 or .m4a files). Now while that's awesome for audiophiles, who the hell uses MP4/AAC? Oh wait, iTunes. In any case, it shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps if you'd want, there's probably a MP3 to MP4/AAC converter out there anyways.
2) Audio playback can now be in random order (wondering why they didn't do it in the first place :P).
3) You can customize the Photo Channel icon with your own photo on the Wii Menu.
4) Wii's sold from early December onwards will have AAC compatibility from the start. Those who have it before will be able to download it.

So pretty minor stuff really, but they're updates nonetheless!

*edit* Now the Check Mii Out Channel has it's own thread :p *edit*

wvlfpvp Nov 13, 2007 10:36 PM

So what exactly is the point for console discussion threads?

Updates to the console, such as yesterday's Check Mii Out channel and the inevitable bitching about how there won't be real storage support for things like the recently-announced 40MB WiiWare games.

<3 Acer

My Wii got fried, so I can't check out the new Mii channel yet, or Mario Galaxy. Another sad week for the Virtual Console, so I'm not too heartbroken.

Actually last week Super Mario 3 came out.

So everyone can hide in them and make snide comments about other people in the office.

"Did you see Three Sixty from accounting? Woooow puttin' on some weight!"
"I can't believe you went there! Oh you. Oh, oh, man. Neo Geo Pocket hasn't done anything all day, what a SLACKER"
"I haven't seen him do anything for a while now actually.. oh God he's dead!"
"Probably because he was so fat LAUGH OUT LOUD"
"You're in the zone! Let's furiously masturbate over totally useless things!"

Here's some news! America gets screwed over with cardboard cases for Link's Crossbow Training while PAL regions get a proper case. It's Wii Sports round two ahuauhauhahuaHUAUHAUHWUHAUHAHUWHUAHUA

Lukage Nov 13, 2007 11:37 PM

America isn't even told yet when the game is coming out, not that we can reserve it or anything.

GameStop says "Well, we were told it might be available a few days after Resident Evil. Resident Evil comes out tomorrow."

I'm taking that you were writing at the same time I did, so you missed an example of what these threads are for :p. Firmware updates, channel updates and other system related news goes here, if I'm correct.

As for the Photo Channel update, I'm a little disappointed for taking the MP3 compatibility away but I'm betting there a way to convert MP3s into MP4/AAC files. Of course, a simple Google/GFF search is all to do this I need but having to convert my library of MP3s is going to be a hassle (though I probably don't need to convert all of it... just the ones good for photo slide-shows. No whining for me then).

Actually, does anyone on GFF use the photo channel apart from me? :eagletear:

FatsDomino Nov 14, 2007 12:31 AM

I don't really get why Nintendo is replacing mp3 with aac. They should just use both formats. Options = better.

nuttyturnip Nov 16, 2007 09:23 AM

Another reason to hate the Japanese. :(

That would be optimal, but does anybody actually use the photo channel to listen to music? If I wanted to listen to music, I'd be lazy enough to just use Orb streaming or something, which works VERY well, from my experience.

I suppose if you used slide shows, then this might be an important feature, but converting to AAC is quick and painless.

But I do agree, Having the option is always better than using just one.

That's pretty badass, unfortunately, I'm not in Japan. -_-

wvlfpvp Nov 16, 2007 10:59 AM

That's beautiful.

Again, iTunes will do it for you. I know winamp plays AAC, so I'd guess that can too. I actually highly recomend you convert your whole library. I did last year or so, selected all more music that was stored as mp3 and have iTunes compress them all to 128kb aac. You wont beleive this but despite most of my library already being AAC, I actually saved around 2 gigabytes of space, which is handy for a laptop user like myself. I have about 3000 songs currently as AAC, they clock in at 10.3 gig.

I find it bizarre that they would REMOVE support for mp3s altogethor. I mean, adding m4a support is a big plus for me as it saves me having to convert to mp3 but actually removing mp3? Stupid. And what is this going to mean for the handful of games that allow custom soundtracks?

FatsDomino Nov 16, 2007 02:28 PM

I don't know if this will affect Excite Truck or any other game that plays MP3s off the SD card since it may not be relying on the Wii's firmware. It will be affecting the Photo Channel for sure which is pretty retarded.

wvlfpvp Nov 16, 2007 10:32 PM

RAB, you transcoded your ENTIRE mp3 library? Ugh quality loss.

Just posting to remind everyone about the Toys R Us "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" deal on Wii games from today until Wednesday (11/21). IT WORKS ONLINE, TOO, IF YOU DON'T SEE GAMES YOU WANT IN-STORE (but then you pay shipping).

I picked up quite a haul, since the games come out to $33.33 each plus tax, and I used the $25 gift card I got from buying Super Mario Galaxy there last week.

Super Mario Strikers: Charged
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Fire Emblem
Battalion Wars 2
Excite Truck
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

There might be some good games left if you go check.

Just tossing out that the B2G1 deal also works (online) on pre-orders as well, so you could toss in SSBB or whatever the heck you want. Better hurry though, since the website is already out of stock on some popular games (Super Paper Mario, Zak and Wiki, etc) and there's no guarantee it'll be back in stock by deal's end.

Also, for some curious reason, Assassin's Creed on the 360 works with this deal.

JazzFlight Nov 19, 2007 11:37 AM

Yeah, last night I ordered Metroid Prime 3, Trauma Center: New Blood, and SSBB.

Hopefully, they'll ship separately without charging me more each time. If they ship together, this will royally suck.

Chaotic Nov 20, 2007 03:51 AM

Can anyone recommend me another two games?

I wanna get Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, but what else is good out there?

Given that Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is in stores tomorrow, I might pick that up along with it... Maybe Fire Emblem, but I dunno.

Cheezeman3000 Nov 20, 2007 01:36 PM

Zelda ocarina of tiem.

More than slightly pissed off, they didn't have much after ONE day at Toys R Us... Figured I'll just pick up Mario and Sonic at the Olympics somewhere else, and pick up Mario Party DS at Toys R Us.

All they had was Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Super Mario Galaxy, and several of those crappy games... I was thinking about Ninjabread Man though. :|

Slayer X Nov 20, 2007 06:29 PM

Picked up the Wii zapper today after finding out that Rock Band isn't coming out here till December 20th, oh and I live all the way in Canada which is soooo far away from the US.

I'll try not to go on a rant here.

Therefore I decided to buy a Zapper seeing how I still have no money after saving the cash for RB and the only game that I haven't beaten in my library yet is Umbrella Chronicles which I will apparently be playing for the next month.

Moving on, the thing aint too bad. It really doesn't seem to make a difference in gameplay seeing how you still have to use the on-screen crosshair to aim, but I just like gun type accessories, so while it may not improve the game it doesn't break it either which is a plus for myself.

The Wiimote/Nunchuck are a bit of a pain to get in and out of the contraption and will definately detur you from jumping from game to game unless you own two Wiimotes.

Also for anyone who has a rechargeable battary pack for their controller that increases the grip size even by a fraction, the controller doesn't seem to fit in the housing. So be prepaired with a fist full of AAs again if you want to use this add-on.

Overall though, if you're interested in it and have got $20 to burn, go for it. Otherwise the only other incentive is for Zelda fanboys who I'm sure have probably got their hands all over this thing for the crossbow minigame.

Chaotic Nov 20, 2007 06:39 PM

I'll probably get the Zapper when I get Ghost Squad.

Seriously, I'm anticipating tons of fun squirting bikini clad women with water guns.

Lukage Nov 20, 2007 07:19 PM

Umbrella Chronicles is a rail shooter. Beware.

Slayer X Nov 20, 2007 07:38 PM

Uhhhh... why did you feel the need to state that? CAPCOM has been saying that it was since they announced it a year ago. Anyone who thought it was otherwise is an idiot.

FatsDomino Nov 20, 2007 08:39 PM

Lukage gets five dollars every time he states the obvious. It's his job you see, but it's all kept in an imaginary bank he keeps in the second knuckle on the ring finger of his left hand. He'll protect it with his life if he has to for the treasure troves contained within would boggle mankind into a stupor only matched by prolonged exposure to the feeling of being completely smothered with laundry fresh from the dryer. Fucking bastard.

map car man words telling me to do things Nov 20, 2007 08:57 PM

Everyone sane is buying Umbrella Chronicles for Rebecca and Jill anyway. And if not that (fags), then surely for Rei Wong.

Slayer X Nov 20, 2007 10:05 PM

Just wanted to point out an obvious fact myself.

Fact 1.) Rebecca's voice actor is not the same as 0's actor.

Fact 2.) Rebecca's voice actor is the same person that does Hinata in the English version of Naruto

Fact 3.) Rebecca's voice actor SUCKS!!

Unfortunately I don't get paid when I state obvious facts however.

No.
Never.
DON'T!

You're only allowed to buy games by UFO Entertainment if you're Infernal Monkey or you're also a collector of cash-grabbing utter garbage because it's a quirky hobby and you plan on making goofy reviews of it.

Why anyone would even think of buying that fucking game I'll never know. Just because the developers made a pun in the title doesn't excuse the game from being shovelware. It's the exact same game (levels, gameplay systems) as Anubis 2 and Rock and Roll Adventures, just with a different skin. There's no story (I'm not exaggerating, I've heard they don't even tell you the plot in the game, they just plop you right in). It's 3 levels long. It will last anyone about an hour before the credits roll.

It actually angers me that Nintendo allowed this developer to publish their games here. The mere fact that these scum-sucking games exist brings down the Wii's overall image. I'd rather have less games come out for the Wii than many ones that deserve ratings of 1-3 out of 10.

Chaotic Nov 20, 2007 11:34 PM

I was kidding. :3:

Like hell I would ever waste my money on half-assed shit like that. As for Anubis II, I'll ask the same question Gamespot did.

You mean there was an Anubis I?

Some recent magazine (EGM or Game Informer, not sure which, thumbed through it at the store) had an article on this very topic. According to industry insiders, the fact that bad, low-budget games exist for a system only means it's doing very well. If Nintendo can afford to give stuff like Ninjabread their official Nintendo Seal of Quality, they're obviously making more money than they know what to do with. It's the same with the DS: Nintendo actually owns so much of the hand-held market they can afford to let barely passable games like Bratz or whatever get released without worrying about losing their market position.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Nov 21, 2007 04:42 PM

It was EGM, and it was meant to be a joke, I think. The reason why you're seeing so much shovelware on Wii so early in its life (and not on PS3/Xbox 360), is because these shovelware developers are just porting over their games from PS2 to Wii. Currently, PS3/Xbox 360 development costs are too costly for shovelware developers to mass release their crap on.

Also, the Official Nintendo Seal of Quality was removed years ago; it's now just the Official Nintendo Seal, to authorize that a game has been licensed by Nintendo.

wvlfpvp Nov 27, 2007 08:40 AM

Oh like there weren't some crap games with the Official Nintendo Seal of Quality on them.

Nall Nov 27, 2007 07:17 PM

I used to think the seal meant that game was absolutely guaranteed to at least run on Nintendo hardware. It certainly didn't mean the games were all just that good, right? I mean, Nintendo didn't have a staff of game critics on-hand to review every game before it's release or anything - at least not from a *quality* standpoint. The name change was probably to assuage any confusions from that.

Quote:

It very well could have been a joke, I'm not sure, but it did make a good point. There just seems to be more shovelware per capita on a system that's doing very well, even if it just means it has that much more software available for it. Like you said, the Wii is relatively easier and cheaper to program for, *and* has a larger user base of several demographics, so I'm not surprised more people are just throwing whatever they can program onto it.

I wouldn't hold out for Ninjabread Man 2: Shuriken Shortcake anytime soon, though.

Buizel Nov 28, 2007 08:02 AM

Hmm, didn't see anybody talk about this (maybe because it's only available in Japan right now) but Nintendo launch the Everybody's Nintendo Channel.

Here's a nice video demo:
YouTube Video

It's a nice little feature and I can't wait when it launch in North America.

Good on Nintendo for looking at Xbox Live and realizing that people enjoy free videos that advertise games.

wvlfpvp Nov 28, 2007 11:00 AM

Now when will they let us download free demos?

FatsDomino Nov 28, 2007 11:26 AM

Probably never. Not with the amount of space they've given us. I barely have enough room on my Wii as is and I'm not even using all the channel slots. Running out of space also puts a lovely handicap on the Internet Channel since it limits your cache. I wonder how this new channel will react to the lack of space on my Wii. I really want SD or HDD expansion support. :(

*bump*

So a new Wii firmware is out, 3.3U/E to be exact (no Japan yet). So what's updated and patched?

Quote:

With this update, you can now move a Mii from the Mii Plaza to The Mii Parade in the Mii Channel. To do this, simply pick up a Mii using the A and B Buttons and then release it over the Mii Parade icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
WOW SUCH AWESOME FEATURE NINTENDO! ...not!

Quote:

Because unauthorized modifications to save files may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 3.3 will also check for and automatically remove such save files.
Uh-oh! This smells trouble. But so far it only affect the Twilight Princess hack which is use run homebrew. With the update the Wii will do:
- Check for TP savegame in Wii System Memory. If invalid (aka find horse name MORE than 6 characters), it deletes it.
- Check TP savegame when copying from SD card to Wii System Memory. If invalid, states that it cannot be copy.

So that's all for the update, right? NOPE! It does more than that!
It blocks the "Trucha Signer" bug that allow people to re-sign the disc/ISO. This means you cannot block the "error 001" that detects modchip (well if you have an old modchip that doesn't have firmware update), have custom data (ie, Guitar Hero 3 custom songs, Manhunt 2 "uncensored", swapping characters movesets, characters voices and/or songs in Brawl or modifiiding data so you can cheat on MKWii online) and, oh yes... Freeloader doesn't work anymore!

Of course you can avoid all of this, especially if you're using freeloader and/or like running homebrew apps (I like to backup my Brawl and MKWii savegame JUST IN CASE Nintendo!), by not updating... but a future game WILL force you to update your Wii. :/

nuttyturnip Jun 17, 2008 08:11 AM

Why am I not surprised. I saw the update last night and figured it was a cover for closing the loopholes for homebrew, etc. At least maybe it'll stop the cheaters on MKWii.

Also, that Mii Parade update really is lame; they would have been better off just to say "hay guyz, we're killin ur homebrewz". If you go into the Mii Channel, it tells you that any Miis you drop into the Mii Parade will have their birthday and creator erased, and by doing so, this messes up game saves. Why would you bother to do this, when your Miis show up in the parade anyway?

Buizel Mar 25, 2009 02:09 PM

Geez! I have to go through 8 pages to find this topic to bump it! :tpg:

Anyway, remember how Mr. Iwata said back around October 2008 (I think; during the conference when they announce the DSi) that they will have a "storage solution" for the Wii? Well, presenting...

Wii System Menu 4.0!
Nintendo already said we will never see a HDD for the Wii so the next best thing they did was (officially) added SDHC support AND you can now run WiiWare and VC games off from the SD card slot! If you're worry about loading don't. Nintendo (and others) claims it only takes about 5 seconds to start the game up. So that's good!

*psst* Updating your Wii WILL block/disable running "homebrew".

Though it's late it sure DOES solved the storage solution. As I see it just getting a cheap 4GB SDHC card can hold MORE VC/WiiWare games than storing it in the Wii internal storage memory. Save game data will be only be read and write in the internal storage memory so I don't think you'll run out of space (because really how many GOOD Wii games are out there?).

EDIT: To make it clear, Nintendo stated that you can run channels from the SD card. So I guess that also include things like the Mario Kart, Wii Fit, Everybody's Vote, Check Mii Out, Wii Speak, Internet and Nintendo Channel as well (did I forget anything else?).

Speaking of Mario Kart, Nintendo finally doing something about those hackers/cheater. They're now BANNING them from Wi-Fi. When I say Wi-Fi I mean EVERY Wi-Fi games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and even Animal Crossing: City Folks. Though right now you can call Nintendo to get yourself unbanned. Sure they'll give you the "speech" about you breaking their ToS/EULA (or whatever it's called) and then give you a warning. I heard that they will start the permanent ban on April 2nd (because people will think that it's an April Fools joke if it was on the 1st). But don't take my word for it. lol

nuttyturnip Mar 25, 2009 02:14 PM

I've got a 2GB card at home, and I can't wait to free up some memory. Maybe now I'll finally buy some stuff on VC.

Lukage Mar 25, 2009 07:40 PM

:fuckyeah:

Weird, they JUST announced at our stores about SDHC compatibility for the DSi and that the Wii won't support the format.
