Official Super Mario Galaxy Thread of Awesomeness
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u...alaxyTopic.jpg
I was surprised when I was browsing for this topic and didn't find one. I'm so super hyped for this game already. Its looking like such an awesome awesome game of the year. Let me remind you that this game is not released until the following release dates, so lets keep the spoiler tags effective when needed. Afterall... Mario is all about the experience of the video game itself. Release Dates Japan - November 1 North America - November 12 Europe - November 16 Australia - November 29 Purchases You can purchase it on Amazon for $49.99 or head to your nearest game store. There's a collector's edition guide @ $29.99 for this game if anyone's a consumer whore for them. Source Quote:

I'll probably get the Japanese version, just so I can play it early.

Added the mention about the US purchase price as well as the guide. I'm not sure about prices in other areas though. I'd love to add this if possible.

whee Since Nintendo was so caring to send out the full game. Although they do request that you shut the demo station off after a person has played it for 5~10 minutes. People must not be allowed to play the whole game before it's actually released, they say. |
Why is this thread 'official'.
Lord knows I'll get this soon after it comes out. I'm a shader whore; the graphics are pretty amazing by Wii standards. |
Quote:
And I guess this can be a thread for everything SMG that can apply. o.O' |

If this was a RPG, I could understand, but this game probably is easily playable without reading too much. |
My OCD prevents me from playing any game in which 100% of the text isn't readable. :(

I can already tell you the ending: Mario defeats Bowser. |
Mario dies, Luke.
Also, turns out Bowser is really your father, and the cake that Princess Peach promises you at the end of the game is a lie. |

As for the actual game, it controlled surprisingly well. I really didn't know what to expect, since I couldn't help but compare the planets to the horrible Rouge level from near the end of Sonic Adventure 2 in my mind. No difficulties at all though, very responsive for the shaking to do a spin punch, and overall a lot of fun. Oh, and apparently the Nintendo reps. asked for Gamestop employees to ban people from the store if they catch you trying to take photos of the game. One of the guys was laughing about that since "you could probably see photos from most of the game already on some place like GameFAQs." |
I hope this game is a galaxy of awesome. Mario is a system-seller, so if this game is top-notch that can only mean great things for the Wii in the last couple months of '07. That is, if Nintendo can manage to manufacture more than two Wiis a day like they have been for the past year...
|
Oh man, it's been leaked. Heads are going to roll at Nintendo because of this.
|
Played it today at my GameStop store. They didn't mention not letting people play through it. The Nintendo Rep came and she was saying that they can't let anyone photograph it, but recommends deleting the save file regularly.
|
Oh man, all this worry about the demo kiosks, what do they think this game is a license to print money?
/watches as hundred dollar bills shoot out of the Wii and Nintendo releases a money clip attachment for the Wiimote... |
I'm pretty jealous of the fact that this is coming out in less than 24 hours in Japan.
2 more weeks! |
Was anybody else pumped up by the airship music from Super Mario Bros 3 on the trailer? It's kinda interesting that music from an NES game still gets the adrenaline going after not hearing it for such a long time.
|
Quote:
Even I wouldn't import this game. :( Not only is the new protection an issue, but a proper Mario game comes out once every 5 or so years, the last thing I want is to play through it initially not knowing what's going on. I could understand if it was, like, KHIIFM+ which won't be released outside of Japan, and people have access to the story in English. Although the story will most predictably be as obvious as all hell, I guess. Typical Mario fanfare, Bowser comes to town, Mario saves day, Mario and Peach have sex and make mushrooms. |

For those with a WiiKey modchip, there is a hotfix ~ http://download.wiikey.cn/dl/1.9g-beta.rar
Additional Spam: I've got my first four stars now, and I must admit I'm officially in love with this game. |
Great game. I played it for about half an hour. It's really colourful. Dynamic is a must for the occasion.
Shitty camera angle but that's to be expected. I ended up dropping into a black hole due to it. But oh well, it's still fun. |
Heads up, guys:
Buy Super Mario Galaxy at Toys R Us, get a $25 gift card. Sweet. I was going to pick the game up at a Gamestop, but this totally changes the equation. |
I thought about it a bit more Sign and realized... NO way in hell I'm going into that store with mom/pop/brats GUNNING for these games on a Tuesday morning just for a 25 dollar freebie. Hell no. o.o'

UR MR GAY
I look forward to this =) |
Hey guys, look at the 3 movies I put on my blog. The musics of the game are often interactive and depend on the player's actions.
Please disregard the bad image quality. On the other hand, the sound is good. I also ripped one boss track which sounds really good with its choir. Send big files the easy way. Files too large for email attachments? No problem! |

I'm very happy that it has recieved some good reviews. Had it not, I would have sold my Wii on the spot. What else should I look forward to, if not Mario? (Oh yea, Mario and the Olympics...)
|
I'm on like my 24th star, just messing through it.
I found L-block. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ene/lblock.png Nothing else to report. |
The L-Block has defeated Kirby and Kratos and now stands to defeat Snake, Link, and Cloud in one swoop. L-Block is unstoppable. I fear for Mario's Galaxy.
|
Man, I can't wait to play this game. This is one of the reasons I'm probably buying myself a Wii in the future. It's gotten great scores in reviews so I'm betting it will live up to my expectations. So far it's got a whopping 97% on gamerankings.com so that must certainly mean it's a great game :D
|
Wait, all the levels consist of Mario running on giant balls.
That's it, I'm selling my Wii. |
Thanks, Megalith. Lol.
The big reviews are up (IGN, Gamespot, 1UP), and all of them are 95% or over. Creaming my pants over here. Need this game now. AGH. |
Some magazine in italy gave the game eleven out of ten
I hope this is taken into the Gamerankings calculations. Lolling at games™ that mag is a joke, their whole scale is 7-9. |
Every review has talked up the soundtrack: that geeks me the fuck out.
|
I was surprised Gamespot gave it what it did, in light of Zelda getting an 8.9 and Metroid getting an 8.5. If GAMESPOT likes it, EVERYONE must like it.
Oh, and I am so excited for the soundtrack you can't believe it. They better damn well release it for once, because I will buy that shit right away. |

It's like they managed to get Eminence to orchestrate the entire soundtrack without letting them eat or sleep. |

So according to gamerankings so far...
Slowly SMG is becoming an instant hit and a game that almost has no match in its generation. Out there, Mario is god :tpg: |
While this game is a must buy for anyone who has a Wii, even if there were other choices. I still find it funny how the Japanese complain about American action games not having a point, when they eat up things like Mario which has just as little or less story then most action games.
I know that Nintendo does a lot of things that no other company would be able to get away with, but it's still puzzling when you look at it. ALSO... Gametrailers.com - Super Mario Galaxy - Review |

This game looks too good now. I have to reserve it...

It's entertaining watching that percentage on gamerankings go up on a daily basis. It's at 97.1% now and steadily climbing... :)
In a few days it'll surpass Ocarina of Time... I actually don't know if I'd agree with that outcome... but at LEAST it's beating Orange Box. Of course, Orange Box getting good reviews was a given, seeing the sheer value it brings to the table. |
It's 97.3% now :D

Okay, why the fuck is it that for such a major release game Nintendo didn't have stores with copies of this game in boxes in the back room this weekend? For such a huge release it is not acceptable that they give today as the release date but everywhere I call it is being released tomorrow because Nintendo decided it was a good idea to start shipping yesterday. Fuck you West Coast. Fuck you. If Halo 3 can get this shit right I'd certainly expect Super Mario fucking Galaxy to. My free day of Mario goodness is ruined. Thanks a lot, Nintendo. Thanks a lot.
|
Funny shit ever today, Jimmy called Best Buy, a dumb clerk answered and said oh yeah we got copies, and told her to hold one for me when I got there. Of course when I got there, she came out and was like ooh I'm so so sorry, I meant to call him back and let him know we cannot release these til TOMORROW (she used emaphsis here). I just started to grin at how dumb she is. Of course we're trying to get dumb clerks to release one.
Ah well, I planned on calling in just to play this gem tomorrow. |
Don't blame the employees, but blame the companies for constantly passing off the ship date as the actual street date. Nintendo is the one videogame company that is notoriously bad at doing just this and nearly every big title they've had pulls this " available on monday " crap and the game is never actually available for in-store purchase until tuesday.
|

MY. GOD. A Travis Credit Union letter! Oh, and Mario Galaxy... good job! |
Quote:
How did you get it, and whats with the book? |
My gamestop sold it to me. That huge book is the hardbound 350 page collectors edition players guide. The smell of freshly printed paper gets me high.
|
That is quite possibly the sexiest guide I've ever seen. You could even set that on your coffee table as a centerpiece, it's that good.
|
You haven't seen a lot of really good guides, have you?
Anyway, pretty nice, Miles. What's the extra crap in the guide that's not in the regular one? Or is it just the hardcover? |
Did anybody else catch the 3 hour marathon at Gamespot? Alex Navarro played from the very beginning until the first battle with Bowser (21-22 stars or so).
It's probably redundant to praise this game even more with all the press it's been getting, but DAMN! this is some amazingly fun game. |
Did I miss something or are all stores breaking the street date for Mario Galaxy? I thought there was like a One thousand dollar per game fine towards each store that sells something
|
The street date is today. No one's breaking anything by selling it today, it's just a matter of actually having copies on hand.
|
I like how the coin is also rated E for everyone. That's very good to know that it can be used as official currency worldwide!

Hmm....didn't know that you could get a commemorative coin for reserving it early. I might have actually reserved it ahead of time for once.

hmm..too used to new game tuesday

Now I have to wait until 7 PM to rush on over and get mine. Yesterday's free day was completely wasted due to Nintendo ineptitude. :( |
Wait, what the fuck, collector's edition?
DO WANT |

And since we still don't have a new Official Wii thread, they were glowing yesterday. Check Mii Out is out now.

|
Weird. I didn't get my commemorative coin. But yeah we reserved our copies early. I just told Jimmy that I forgot to ask GS clerk for one. But he wasn't passing them out to the others that were standing in line in front of me though, they all had reserve tickets.
|
Who are we supposed to go to if we don't get our commemorative coin? Cuz I totally didn't get one either even though I pre-ordered. And I hope the reason isn't limited stock because the fucking Gamestop employees leeched the ones meant for pre-orders. I know they do pull that shit sometimes.
|
Quote:
As for the coin.. I grabbed mine at target thanks to a friend. Who knew they were taking pre-orders. Target of all places.. At least they hold the coins for those who reserved it (5 out of 10 coins) |
Jimmy told me that he thought its possible that they didn't just simply get the shipment of the coins. I really dunno... those who were in line that afternoon (obviously GS told them that they'll get Mario that afternoon) didn't get one. I'd definitely noticed. Sigh... who knew buying games would just make me all materialistic for some little fucking trinket (I'm looking at the damn wright plushie).
On a positive note, I kinda found out (more like I didn't care) that there's a two player option. It'll be so awesome so I'm awaiting on Jimmy to come home from work to play. He's excited about this game too. Although this game is purely mine in purchase-wise, so I got dibs on playing this through and through. |
Those Simon figures are so cool! I saw one at a GameStop just sitting behind the counter. Asked the clerk if it was for sale... nothin' doin'.
Quote:
|
I have to say that this game is awesome! Buy yours at Toys R Us, folks. You get a $25 gift card with purchase. Better than some fucking coin!
|
I just picked mine up a little while ago at Toys R Us also. Since I reserved it, I got the coin and the gift card. :3: Gonna pop in the game and play for a little while.
|
Unfortunately for me, the game doesn't come out until tomorrow. I was kind of mad until I heard the message gamestop left on my answering machine. It was the guy who plays Mario's voice. Mario actually left a message on my answering machine. Me and my sister were laughing hysterically at the message. It was defintely the peak of my day. After I heard the message I was not so angry that I still have to wait another day.
Did anyone else receive the Mario message? |
I got the game. Have to wait till I get off work to play it though. However I noticed that every other game today was pushed back till Thursday or at least for Canada... WTF?
Assassin's Creed Kane & Lynch Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles SvsRAW '08 (but the Wii one still released today) |
It's at 97.4%... two more 100% reviews and it'll most likely pass Ocarina of Time...
|
Your gamestops sound stupid. Mine was giving it out with the game without you even having to ask. And they said they had one for every single pre-order.

Here's the GameStop Mario message I was talking about earlier. I decided to record it. Take a listen!

Just got back from the TRU at Winchester/San Jose, what a joke.
Called this morning arund 10:30 to ask if they had it in stock, the lady who picked up said no. I was like, well, okay. Had class in the afternoon so I called again when I got out around 4 PM. Guy who picked up said the shipment hadn't come yet, but "DHL is swearing up and down they'll get it here around 5." So I say okay, and drive on down. Get there at 4:30 and wait... and wait... the associates there are telling people that "we can't confirm the shipment is coming until we see the truck." What the heck is that? And apparently they DID receive a shipment earlier of 30 (though there were 85 preorders) and they all sold out. TRU swears they'll have it in by tomorrow, but I dunno about that. The only nice thing is they apparently will honor the GC deal if you preordered regardless of when you actually pick the game up. Word on the INTERNET is that TRU is seriously letting people down all over (and especially in California). No wonder nobody really shops at TRU for games. To anyone who hasn't reserved it at TRU and is still considering getting the game, might I suggest you go to Circuit City or Best Buy instead? I've read that those chains are pricematching SMG to TRU's price. Sometimes they sell it outright for $25 or sometimes they just give you a $25 gift card. And I'm sure they've got plenty in stock, too. |
I took a bike ride up to the nearby Gamestop today, walked in, walked out with a copy without a pre-order.
It deserves all of the great reviews it's getting. The soundtrack is amazing, the game looks great, and the WAGGLE JUSTICE controls work extremely well. Maneuvering around worlds with the perspective changing constantly was a little disorienting at first, but after the first star or two I didn't have any problems going from planet to planet. Also those little miniworlds that open by feeding those star things are hard as hell. One where you have to pull back and launch Mario from launcher to launcher took me at least 20 tries. |
I basically had the same impressions as Taco. My head was a little weezy at first from the perspective, but I said F*** it, and carried on. And I'm glad I did cause this game oozes awesomeness. ^^

I have nothing else to contribute other than the fact that this is the second game of the year that hasn't gotten a single disappointment yet (a couple others were close). Delicious cake! |
Quote:
The thing that you have to keep in mind is that although they arrive at the same time they necessarily may not arrive in the same box. Depending on the time of day that they get their shipments (and the mood the workers are in) they may or may not want to bother going through the boxes to find stuff. There's also this clever little invention called the drawer. For the most part employees are allowed to cram whatever they want into their drawer. I know some people who stuck a few of the coins into their drawer and turned around and told people coming in with their receipts that they ran out of coins. |
Bought my copy at Target and there were like 40 of them in the case. The guy also gave me a coin and I didn't even preorder the game (guess they didn't have many preorders there -- haha).
I didn't even bother with trying to go to Toys R Us. It's too far away from me and opened 2 hours too late for my schedule today, and I've been disappointed by them not having things in stock that they're supposed to. |
We went and got it at Toys R Us and they didn't have a coin for us. They did, however, have a $25 Gift Card for preorders which I used to buy a Classic Wii controller today. Not that that fucking thing is gonna see any use any time soon since I'm gonna be playing this game until I pick up every fucking star.
Oh god, I <3 this game so much! |
This is honestly a horrible month for me. There's too many games coming out in a row. Mario, Umbrella Chronicles, Ghost Squad, the Zapper... and everything else I could ever want. Blah.
And I'll probably spend all my time playing Mario until I have all 40-million stars. Also, comet-affected zones suck. Fuck that shit, and may it burn in hell. |
I don't really have a complaint with the game, except that now looking at my monitor, I expect the display to be spherical instead of flat. No, really, I've been playing too much. The game's fucking amazing. The music is what really gets me goin'! Some of the boss music is downright epic and the levels' music is great! I'll probably do another minirip of songs from select levels.* Sucks that sound effects are probably unavoidable though.
*note: I know someone else ripped some songs, but they're all missing the intros and are otherwise sucky quality, so :D edit: one of my favorite things was in the first area where you use the blue stars to pull you toward them-- on the first planetoid (the metallic square one), you don't have to use the stars! If you get the right momentum, you can actually slingshot your way to the next one with the gravity of it! |
If you are getting Super Mario Galaxy and want a deal, get it from Best Buy:
Quote:
|
I think Best Buy realized that Toys R Us was stealing sales from them... So they decided to take action.
It's a weird situation for me. Even though I already own the game, in one of the nearby shopping plazas, there's a Toys R Us on one side and a Best Buy on the other. <_< |

Anyway, I've got the game now. Finally after 4 trips, multiple calls and days of waiting, I've got the game. I managed to use a 15% off coupon from Babies R Us as well for additional savings -- the guy who rang it up was like "sure, I'll try it" and then "wow, you saved a lot." The coin is in such nice packaging! I'll be able to play later tonight after I finish some errands. This is actually the first Wii game I've purchased since I got the system in July (with Mario Party 8, Wii Sports and Wii Play), so I'm expecting a great time. This $25 gift card will come in handy during Toys R Us's Buy 2 Get 1 Free Wii game deal next week... Looks like my collection may suddenly double! |
Forgot to pre-order. I got my coin today and a copy of the game because the girls there at EB love me. :)
*goes to play Mario Deliciousness* |
One more reason to dislike Lukage. :tallymark:
|
Super Mario Galaxy, more like Godlike Mario Galaxy. I love this game so much. Battlestarman Galactica is the first Wii game I've been absolutely addicted to since Elebits, and it's similar gameplay as far as the... star... bits... oh. But yeah, that's about it. Just expressing my awe and reverence of this divinely awesome game. Mii likey. Mii likey a lot.

Quote:
And here I was about to use my card on Mario Party DS when it came out. |
I just played it for a little while, long enough to grab the first three stars off the Good Egg Galaxy. Tell me, do I just really suck or were the controls just a little weird to get used to at first? Game isn't exactly HARD but I nearly had a game over from falling off too much into a black hole (couldn't move the way I wanted to) and I got hit tons of times from missing when I tried to jump on enemies. I guess I can just blame it on me being out of practice with games, but... :(
But yeah, awesome atmosphere. Shooting through those launch stars is like freeeeeowwwwwwwwwwwww. |
Saka, it sure does take some getting used to. The controls I mean, especially when you're on a small sphere walking around and you could flip the controls easily. But after playing for two days and a mild headache, I got the controls down.
I got like close to 40 stars now and loving every bit of it. I'm excited about finding hidden/green stars. |
If you guys haven't, I'd recommend trying out two-player. The experience is oddly satisfying.
You can also piss off player one by making him jump when he's not expecting it. |
How do you make player one jump when you're player two? =o
|
Just highlight Mario with the cursor and hit A once to make him jump and again to spin.
Normally player two's cursor just collects star bits. However, when they press/hold A, they can interact with the environment in a much more direct way. Stunning enemies, flinging those green glob things, shaking bushes and flowers to make coins and more star bits appear, and stopping boulders and stuff. That might be common info, I dunno. For the first half-hour, all I did was just collect star bits without pressing anything. |
I haven't even been able to play in co-op mode yet.
Translation: I have no friends. :( |
One of my roommates is usually around to pick up a second Wiimote and join in. While it's annoying as hell when they try to make me jump off ledges, it's extremely helpful since the second pointer can stun enemies and collect start bits.
|
It's official: Super Mario Galaxy is now the 2nd best game of all time, and the reviews are STILL coming in... (at 100% each, of course)
|
Gotta say I really like the character of Rosalina. She's pretty awesome. The storybook thing is a pretty cool little bonus to the game. :)

And Ence Tekken 3 is up there cos you know, everything get's reviewed agaisnt the games of it's time. Tekken was pretty sweet and unbeatbable back in the day. |
Wow, the story book is kind of depressing.
Finished the game last night. It's an interesting ending. I wish the final boss wasn't as easy. I was really hoping for a OH HO YOU THOUGHT I WAS A GONER BUT NOPE HERE COMES THE REAL FINAL BATTLE. I thought I almost got it too as the cut scenes rolled along but nope. I guess I just wished the game was a bit tougher here and there. I'm not a huge fan of the 3 hits health bar because I do tend to make stupid mistakes and coins aren't as readily available as 64 and Sunshine. And really when you've been screwing up due to being upside down you're less likely to risk jumping and squashing an enemy and keep hearing that irritating low health beeping. It's kind of odd how I feel about this game. It's a lot of fun but it doesn't have the same HUGE playground feeling that 64 and Sunshine had. A few stages do but most stages reflect an older Super Mario Bros. feeling of get to the end you probably won't really be coming back here again on your own volition it's been a great ride, fella. I love Luigi. He has way more personality than Mario because of his personal demons. They really worked him well into the game and I'm sure it's going to be fun playing as him. Everyone should definitely get this game. However, I must say that Nintendo better get another Mario platformer game out within this generation. I get a feeling that once I've played the heck out of this game I'll be wanting more. I felt like that after Sunshine. |
Yeah, I'm not so big on the three-hit health bar either, given that I tend to completely fail at jumping on enemies. Then teh constant beeping when I'm at 1 health gets annoying...
I die way too much at the stupidest crap. I swear I lost about 8 lives doing the ray surfing stage. If it weren't for the 1-up in the middle of the stage, all would have been lost. |
Quote:
If you thought that ray surfing stage was annoying, wait till you get to the slingshot one. I think I lost about 10-15 lives there. There's so much things that I've done so far that I totally got sidetracked from the main game (aka doing the comet challenges and going to those optional galaxies). By the time I finished the fountain dome, when the kitchen dome opened up I already had enough stars to go straight to the enemy base. >_< |
Speaking of comet challenges, is that the only way to complete a galaxy? I've got the three stars on the galaxies I've opened up so far (Terrace and fountain) but only the galaxy that I did a speed run on (junk galaxy) is marked as completed, with 4 stars. Seems kind of weird to have to rely on a random event to complete a galaxy, unless you just pay 15 bits every time to move it to where you want it to go...
|
Well, I'm going to assume it makes these little random comets and basically it's your job to follow them. It will position the comets where you haven't gotten a comet star until there are no more new stars to get. It may be random per say but if you're waiting on a comet to get to a specific stage because you just HAVE to have a complete Kitchen before you move on to the Engine Room then you're just wasting your time.
Additional Spam: Okay whoever came up with the Ghostly Galaxy Purple Coin stage needs to burn in hell. It's those fucking blue pull stars and mines a time limit of one minute. Fucking impossible. :argh: |
:catgonk:
It's on first place now on game rankings!! I definitely need to get myself a Wii now >_< But I don't have the money ;_; |
LOL. SD said I had a "James Bond" moment at the final boss battle. I typically messed up a lot and that 3 health bar is more than plenty. It'd teach me more to keep my controls in control. But at the final boss battle, I already know what to do since I fought him in similar fashion before and therefore I had became a "James Bond" in fighting him. ;)
And... I had no trouble getting this far, but I do hate the spooky race. :\ Damn meats. And the trial ray race often end early for me and when I was doing so well, I finished it when I wasn't expecting it. Really now... 3 minutes? o.O' I finished on something like 1'18. |
Quote:
|
How odd, I had no issues with the ray racing. I thought I would too but I found it to be quite intuitive. Sling shot I had no real issue with beyond one or two deaths until I decided to play it safe and try more precision. The cannon got me confused the first time because I thought it would be like 64's cannon where it arcs so you can't aim straight. Mario goes flying off to die because I aim above the target and then the whole world laughs at me.
|
The problem with ray surfing is not the controls, but the friggin' waves. I'd try to take a corner and then WHUMP, big wave sends me into the air and the ray and Mario get sucked off into the abyss.
|
Hey guys, I'm planning to get that Wii next week and Galaxy is going to be one of the Auto-purchases, so I'll be poping in here for my impressions =D Game looks absolutely FUN from the preview videos I've seen.
|
Saka, the key to that trial ray surfing is TAP. Just keep tapping A. Don't hold it down. You'll notice the second half of the course water path get narrower. So play it safe by tapping lightly. You'll have PLENTY of time to get to the finish line. After you go through the vertical loop, you're close to the finish line fyi.
I'm at 85 stars now. I think I know what SD's talking about... my James Bond moments were hilarious and awesome at the same time. Like in Trial bubble, I kept getting impatient and end up dying so much. But in the second half? LOL I made it there in one piece by Bond my way there like with the bullet RIGHT BEHIND me in touching the damn bubble! He'd get pissed off when I did this so easily. And lollin at Acer. I wondered what the hell were they thinking in making Mario 64 cannons... SD STILL HAVE NOT PLAYED THIS GAME. FOR SHAME. His excuse? Golden Eye 64. |

@ Meia: Yeah, I eventually started taking it slower, though that meant I usually charged straight through the first portion so I'd have enough time to waste later on. I think I clocked in at 1'18", when the limit was 1'30" or so... something like that.
Right now I've got 26 stars and I've just opened up the kitchen and Rosalina's library. Game is fun as heck, though I still keep dying at stupid parts. Also, who wants some Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack? Bigupload — 2000Mb Free File Transfer, Hosting & Backup Storage Provider. |
Speaking of soundtracks, I REALLY love the storybook one. Sooo awesome.
And HOLY FUCK, Luigi's Purple Coins level IS INSANE! HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU GET THE 6 HOVERING IN AIR?! Even my husband's CE guide's AUTHOR said this is the hardest level and took him like 20 tries and only to realize that the power star is BACK at the beginning (like usual). :\ Great, I already had had hellva a time with Mario level. Edit: Ahh... apparently there's 150 coins. Not necessary to get them ALL, you just need 100 for the star. But damn the time limit. :\ |
Yeah, those purple coin challenges are nuts. That level in particular took me a while but as a result I've damn near mastered long jumping and double jumps using the spin mid-air attack. That's how you get all those coins hovering over nothing. Seriously, the purple coin challenges would have been a lot more tolerable for some of them if they'd just up the time limit or remove it all together.
The other time limit stages I hate are the ones where you have to blow up a shit ton of trash heaps with ba-bombs. They only give you 30 seconds and throwing isn't exactly easy in this game. You have to position them just right or you won't make the time limit. I swear it must have taken me like 30 tries or something. So yeah I got all 120 stars...:
|
Jeeze, how long or how hard do you play to have already beaten the game so completely? I've put maybe 8 hours into the game and I'm just hanging at around 37 stars now.
On the other hand, I do die lots of pointless deaths... |
Currently have 76 stars, myself.

Saka, it says it took me 15 hours and 57 minutes. However, there were a bunch of times I just left it on pause so it might have included that time which I'm sure added up to hours. I'd say it probably took me 13 hours to beat. Once you get the flow of things you can clear out stars pretty easily. It's just those damn purple coin levels that will trip you up the longest. Especially the ones with time limits. Additional Spam: Spoiler:

I picked this up yesterday and could not put it down. Played for 7 and a half hours straight on my initial run collecting 42 stars in the process. All of the "bonus" stages are so ridiculously fun. The game looks gorgeous. Only stars I've had a hard time with and have had to skip for the time being are the boo pull star race (so had this on one attempt but those mines at the end screwed me) and ray surfing. Ray surfing really hurts my wrist :/
I only have a few minor complaints about the game. About the controls, they are not much different from SM64, but there are some improvements, such as wall sliding to prepare a wall jump (as opposed to just bouncing off if you misstime it), and you now have a lot of control over your backflip and what distance it puts you at. However, while getting Mario to stop, slide, and side flip was the easiest thing in the world, not to mention very useful, in SM64, in Galaxy, you now slide for a split second if not doing a straight out very tight u-turn. I want my side flips back you bastards. :( The underwater camera and controls could have been better. It takes more work than it should to maneuver to where you want to get to. A closer, fixed behind the back perspective would have been just fine. There seems to be no reason to collect coins other that to restore health. No achievement marks or goals set towards to high scores, or if there are, I haven't found them yet. Sure, fifty of them get you a 1-up but with as hard as these things are to gather, why not make it 5 extra lives? I earn an average of two on obviously placed green mushrooms and star bits alone. Hell, I've died my share of times and I still have over 50 lives banked. Last thing is that one of the sound effects of Mario jumping (or him exclaiming as he does) does not go together with the rest of the audio of the game at all. Because the rest of the audio is amazingly crisp and clean and this sound effect sounds like it was recorded with a tape recorded held close to the mono speaker of a tv SM64 was being played on. It may seem like a stupid complaint but you hear the damn thing a lot, practically every other time you jump. Like I said though, all that's minor, the game is still incredible and fun as hell. Additional Spam: And yeah I hate objection failure deaths. They should seriously just ask you to retry. If you don't actually die then you shouldn't lose any lives ever. Not that you're ever in a life shortage but it's annoying. Yeah, swimming takes a bit to get used to but it's not like it was brilliant in 64 or Sunshine either. I do like the spin swimming. Makes it a lot more tolerable. And actually while I wish there were more coins just because of the 3 health meter I'm really glad there are no 100 coin stars for every stage. I hated them in 64 and I hated them in Sunshine. At least for the 100 purple coins they build a stage around it. I absolutely hate scrounging around for shit for no clear reason. Ever since Donkey Kong 64 I hate collection hunts. Pro tip for trash ba-bomb stage: Hold A to go through dialog faster (In some dialog you can even press A + B to skip it). Also pick up center left ba-bomb, touch the far left ba-bomb to get it started, throw ba-bomb into top left centered between three trash heaps, and grab far left ba-bomb you've started already and throw it to the left overs on left. Repeat process for right trash heaps. Toss the rest in the center. Hope that you were quick enough and the bombs actually get a chance to go off before the timer stops. Additional Spam: Also, I just did the boo pull star race again with Luigi and I beat my old time of 1 minute and 30 seconds which I had no trouble with at all with Mario. My new time is 54 seconds and 23 milliseconds. Found a shortcut this time. That stage isn't hard at all. Oh well, I guess not for everyone. Now if you want a hard pull stage level that really is a race then you're going to LOVE the purple star challenge for Ghostly Galaxy. =) |
I thought the trash cleanup part was really easy, actually. If you look closely you'll notice there are gold marks on the ground spread out between the trash heaps -- if you chuck a bomb on or near them, it takes out all the adjacent trash heaps. There are 4 marks, and you only need 4 bombs to clean house so it works perfectly. Of course you still have to move quickly, but at least you won't need to worry much about aim.
|
Ha, funny, I never thought of those as markers, probably because I collected the coins out of them on sight.
|
Dang, Saka. I never thought of that. By the way my advice is for the second ba-bomb trash level. It might have markers too but you'll need at least 5 bombs. The heaps are spread too far apart to not do it the way I have shown you.

Additional Spam: Oh and guys try jumping on Rosalina's head. I don't know exactly why but it's really amusing to me. =') |
It seems like I will be able to play this game tonight, as my friend has gotten a copy and he invited me in to play, so I can't wait!
By the way, I found the most crazy thing on the gaming case, I dunno if you guys have noticed, but if you look on the Super Mario Galaxy logo, look on the sparkles that are on some of the letters, and if you put those letters together you will see what I found XD (Now that I looked on the net it seems I wasn't the first finding this, but oh well) |
Everyone loves Mr. Gay. =)

I am really amazed at how responsive and intuitive the controls are, as much as I've been hating on the wiimote. The cursor is nice and fluid, not once has the game mistaken cursor waving for a spin attack, and when I DO want a spin attack, the response is immediate. I'm now convinced that Twilight Princess was just suffering from Shitty Port Syndrome, because this is every bit as good as TP's controls were bad.
The game itself is really fun too, even if it feels more like Mario got into some bad shrooms and is just hallucinating the whole adventure. That one switch galaxy in the Terrace feels like one of Mario's nightmares. It also seems like someone was seriously nostalgic for SMB3. You've got Bowsers airship fleet, those metal box platforms, and even a few remixed tracks. Makes me wonder if Bowser's other 7 ankle biters are going to show up at some point. Where ARE all his kids coming from, anyway? Why don't we ever see Mrs. Bowser? It gets a bit disorienting when you're running on the underside of planets, but maintaining coherent gameplay throughout must have been quite a feat. For once I really feel like this is a game that would never have worked without 3D. Galaxy is totally deserving all the high scores its getting. And as icing on the cake, I even made it in time to get the $25 gift card from Toys R Us. =D Also, since I'm too lazy to hit Gamefaqs, I'm noticing that (naturally) there's hidden stars on each galaxy. I haven't found any obvious hints to what's involved, like randomly finding red coins in 64, so I'm wondering what the hidden objectives are? |

Currently sitting at 71 stars. Just did the Dusty Dune Purple Coin Star. Near the end of it I had a LOT of close calls. Had to hit the switch and run back for the last one twice. When I finally netted the damn thing I let go of the controller and my poor nerve wracked hands were drenched.
I've tried the Luigi Purple Coin Star a few times (edit: yay! just completed it :D). It's going to be hard but with practice, definitely possible. It's not the crazy, false floor, time limit ones that get me, it's those slowly accumulate, easy to fall off the edge and die at 99 ones that I dread. Additional btw: Oh, yeah, that pull star race once I came back to it after awhile, I got it on the first attempt. Then ol' purple comet flew over Ghostly. I cursed an awful lot. Every time I'd collect the hundredth with a single second left and, of course, no time to get to the star. Then one time I got it with five seconds left, but my excitement got the better of me and I grabbed the pull star across to grab it too soon and arced around it as time expired. Many attempts later and I finally grabbed it. Got it to show up with 11 seconds remaining, plenty of time to get to it. A really frustrating course, but in hindsight, fun in how completely I was trained to treat particular areas like a kid going across the monkey bars and tip toe through the corners and narrows. |
I would recommend doing Luigi's and the Dreadnought's Purple Coins stages in one sitting. If you can get those two done, you have more or less taken out the two hardest stages in the game.
It's weird. Those two stages should have frustrated the hell out of me, but... it still feels so rewarding that I completed them. |
I was still pissed off when I beat Dreadnought's Purple Coin stage. Wait is the Dreadnought the one in The Garden or The Fountain? The sidescrolling spaceship level with the thwomp and bazillion cannons from The Garden? If it's that one I lost like 20 lives on it. The game's controls for moving upside down and up a wall fail way too fucking often on that stage for the leap in ridiculous precision it requires. It doesn't help when at the end of the stage all the canons decide to go off and leave you nowhere to run to. One canon almost always tosses you off the stage so I don't even know why they give you that 3 extra health pack mushroom at the beginning.
Luigi's Purple Coin stage was far more forgiving once you knew what to do and where to go. |
Dreadnought is in the Garden and is the one with the Thwomp. I lost like 30 lives on it.
But once you have realize that you have some spots where you can wait and calm yourself, it's actually not terribly bad. As for the cannon fire, you're either meant to collect the coin in a certain way that would have you avoid the cannonball entirely, or you can just duck. Most of them give you enough room squat underneath. |
Yeah, I only figured out that you can wait for the platform to respawn on my second to last try. I was like no fucking way I can do that?!
|
Sounds like fun, I haven't even got access to the last cluster of five galaxies yet. Almost forgot they were there. Hey, if beating final Bowser gets you a grand star, why doesn't that power up the last area? No, no, they need the specific star from Jr.'s Lava Core level.
|
Haha. Well, who's to say it's any Grand Star? Perhaps they act like keys, which can only open certain doors. In that case, Bowser Jr's would open the Garden and the one Bowser hold opens the gate to the new world. That would explain why the very first Grand Star is only powering some stupid little machine, and the very last is

Just a thought! |
I just did the Deadnought's purple coin stage and the secret star's bomb stage. Both of them took me like 10 tries in total. I was rather surprised and glad I got those out of the way. I still haven't gotten through Luigi's Purple Coins or Ghostly Purple Coins stage either. :\ How the fuck do you get the latter within the time alloted?
|
The best strategy is to stay along the outside and then work your way inward. Also, try to keep moving even if you miss a few coins you wanted to grab.
I did it on my fifth or so try with one second remaining. |
The Ghostly Purple Coin stage was rather daunting at first b/c I thought all the coins totaled up to 100 but there are more like 150 or 200 coins out there. You just have to be very good at using the blue pull stars. Go around the outside and then work your way in the middle where there are long lines of purple coins. You should be able to make it with five or ten seconds to spare if you do it well enough. Took me a while to get it down. Then after you get 100 the star will appear in the center.
Luigi's Purple Coins uses a similar strategy. Work your way around the stage clockwise using long jumps and double jumps using the spin technique for precision landings. Eventually you'll take out the middle but remember to leave space to get back to the beginning so you can grab the star. Time really isn't an issue once you get rolling. Just be careful. |
After getting all 120 stars, I really think that the slow, untimed Purple Coin collect-a-thon stages were the toughest/most frustrating.
This is because they could last 10 minutes or so and if you trip off the edge at 99 coins, you have to do it all over again. At least with the timed stages you were guaranteed a short replay time. |
The only time I had any problem with an untimed stage was in Freezeflame, when I had only one health left and was stuck on a platform completely surrounded by the freezing water. I spent like five minutes calming myself down and plotting out the shortest course to dry land since I had killed about 45 minutes finding all the damn coins.

I fucking LOVE THIS GAME! I had my first try on this game yesterday and I totally fell in love with it. I haven't laughed so much at a (new) game in years! Thank you Nintendo!

I just beat the game today after taking my time and savoring the goodness. Despite the final battle being easy, it was still fun as hell, just like the rest of the game. Pure gold.
Now, I have to collect 53 more stars to advance to 1337 status... ugh, those trial galaxies are going to fucking kill me. |
Quote:
I found them to be the most fun galaxies, and they're not that hard. I wish there were more rolling and bubble ghost stages. In fact, it would have been incredible if Nintendo included an extra 10 stages of each and had them be extra stars (past 120) to unlock more things. This is what Monkey Ball's Wii physics/controls should have been. Plus, those bubble stages make me wish for a Wii Bubble Ghost remake. |
I beat this game (120 stars) last night and must say I’m rather disappointed. 2/3s of the game is simply repeating missions on a harder difficulty and it doesn’t help that they blatantly copy galaxies and bosses. While this game was enjoyable I’d say it's equally as mediocre as Mario Sunshine. I felt like everything in this game has been done before and better in both past Mario games and other platformers.
|
I wouldn't say it's mediocre. But I did feel at the end of it that I wanted more and that the game severely lacks the playground environments that 64 and Sunshine have. I really do hope they come out with either another Mario platformer or some extraordinarily new and fun platforming IP in the next year or so.
|
I'll grant that the levels are pretty tightly focused on whichever star you're going after. I kinda miss the way Mario 64 would point you towards the next star in sequence, but you could just about get them all out of order. I'd have liked more of a sandbox approach to each level.
Still, I'm finding very little to complain about thus far. The underwater camera and the tendancy of the controls to freak out when you flip upside down are about my only real gripes. I'm 44 stars in, and the game is going to have to completely suck from here on to disappoint me. But I never played Sunshine, so maybe I'm just easy to impress. |
They gave us more of Super Mario 64's open-ended progression in Super Mario Sunshine, and all people do is bitch about that game. So they went back to Super Mario Bros. 3.
I see nothing wrong with the logic they used to return to more linear stage designs. |
I'm now... on my... GREEN play through with about 28 stars. I played a good bit with him and I thought he'd be more superpowered as MUCH. Apparently not... if anything its a bit of a little hindrance when some levels are built with Mario jumping mechanics in mind.
So I plowed through to see if I can find a level that makes it hard to have him playing as. So far I haven't except the cosmic comet level, and I noticed you can get him... cosmic? Or something? Its crazy. |
Yes, cosmic Luigi is much tougher than cosmic Mario due to the fact that he likes to long jump, use flips, and take shortcuts. I've had some close races and I actually lost twice. I never was beat by cosmic Mario.
|
I picked this up today and haven't really stopped playing at all. I can definately see the influences from the Jungle Beat team.
|
I got the game on saturday night, and after an awesome cramphandstravaganzathon, I just finished the game with 120 Stars. And loved every second of it.
I thought Rolling Gizmo Galaxy was going to be a major pain in the ass, but it wasn't that bad. The toughest stars for me would have to be the purple coins in Dreadnought and Toy Time, and the daredevil comets in Ghostly and Melty Molten. |
Quote:
Haven't been playing much lately, I'm at 108 stars, will have them all soon, I'm sure. |
I can't see how you can lose to Cosmic Mario. He doesn't take shortcuts and he makes a lot of unnecessary moves that slow him down. You can easily dust him by taking a few shortcuts and long jumps. I might have come close only one time because of a stupid move but that's it. Cosmic Luigi is tough but he usually makes at least one bad decision that could give you a tiny advantage. It's not much though.
