The download links aren't working for me.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Oct 22, 2007 12:29 PM

The download links have been fixed.

orion, you had all the urls in quotations even though it's not necessary. When I removed the quotations, the links worked properly. That bit of syntax evidently causes redirection issues.

That's funny, I've always had the URL's in quotations and it's never caused problems before. I did type out the thread in Word at work, though, so I bet its infernal "smart" quotes screwed something up.

I'll leave 'em out in the future, since it's an easy way for typos to be introduced.

I mentioned to CHz that the Umihara Kawase track sounded like a bootleg cut from Lunar.

The Spyro track would have locked a higher place with more complexity or sophisticated instrumentation.

Exactly why it's so awesome. It captures that classic Iwadare sound we all know and love...definitely prime ReMix material.

Barely managed to fit in my own nomination.
Funny how Goldfish's random nom was one of my top picks.
And talk about the obscure of the obscure, Blah. I can't even find a listing for that game. Where'd you guys dig that stuff up?

kuttlas Oct 23, 2007 11:20 PM

Agni - Disappointing considering how good the first Ar Tonelico's soundtrack was. I'm dangerously close to using the G-word here.

DEFENSIVE LINE - Lurking in the Darkness (Stage4) - Wasn't there a beatmania song a few weeks ago that was basically the same thing?

Dark Hollow - I have certain expectations for someone who claims to be the former drummer for the Police; all of them involve some sort of bells or random wind chimes. Even with such high expectations, Spyro music never fails to deliver. I give it 10 vaguely dissonant dinging noises out of 10.

Kawanabe Theme - Listening to UK's soundtrack is like walking past the donut shop and getting a free donut from a girl in a donut costume. Even if it's the wrong kind of donut you still got it for free and maybe your friend will want it. Also she gave you her phone number and you were walking past the donut shop to get a new bicycle. I think I have made my point perfectly clear.

Nothing to say about the others.

I don't have a particular song in mind right now, but I'm curious - what do people think about the eligibility of the Mario Party games? I don't really recall ever hearing much talk about the music, other than the fact that Yasunori Mitsuda worked on the first one.

Obviously, the games themselves are pretty popular, but iirc, eligibility isn't determined by game popularity (though that may affect the decisions). It's more a matter of whether or not the music is popular / known / talked about.

Some really good tracks this week. Here's my point spread:

2 points : dodonpachi DAI-OU-JOU KE-TSU-I kisunajigokutachi ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK - DEFENSIVE LINE - Lurking in the Darkness (Stage4)
2 points : Ar tonelico II ~Sekai ni Hibiku Shoujotachi no Metafalica~ Original Soundtrack – Agni
1 point : Legend of Heroes ~ Sora No Kiseki SC Original Soundtrack – Hamel
1 point : Spyro the Dragon (Game Rip) - Dark Hollow

And here is my nomination:

<> Composer(s) : Richard Jacques
<> Album/Game Title : HEADHUNTER: REDEMPTION / HEADHUNTER Original Soundtrack Recording
<> Track Title : Ramirez At Bay
<> Disc Number : 2 (of 2)
<> Track Number : 13

Glad to see my random nomination is holding in there. Think I'll try it again (bear in mind...It's not ENTIRELY random, it's just dependent on my iPod and I only keep the the stuff I want on it, so it's more like I'm letting a third-party choose for me).

And my second bastard nom is:

Track Name: Kukuru
Track Number: 3 (1 disc)
Album: Arc the Lad Original Soundtrack (note: is actually an arrange album)
Info: Chudah's Corner - Arc the Lad Original Game Sound Track
Note: Ha, love it! Never would have thought to pick this one. Sounds like a typical _DH_ nom. Oku did some earlier Falcom arranges as well (Star Trader).
YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement

*note, if this has shown up in SOTW before, please let me know.

Will vote later.

I've considered nominating something from it before, but haven't yet because I wasn't in the mood for getting into talks about eligibility and whatnot. But I would be fine with it. I still haven't heard the music from all the games, as 8 games is a lot to go through.

Well, I've played every single one (yes every single one good Lord), so I'm going to know any piece of music you throw out, but yeah, music discussion of the series pretty much never comes up ever. There might be a reason for that, but I'd think anything you'd pick would probably be okay.

Surprisingly good week. Seriously, those 2nd and 3rd spots were tight this time around.

3 pts - Hamel (a good reprisal of the "Silver Wings" melody...not something I'd normally pick, but I wasn't annoyed it came up at all)
2 pts - Dark Hollow (always nice to find ambient music that sounds like it matters)
1 pts - Lurking in the Darkness (reminds me of an average Pantera track...not particularly striking at first, but the groove and hard-edge guitar tones start to grow. Definitely not the generic rock I thought it was in the BSC, on second listen...Of course, I didn't like Pantera then either. ;p)
Gomen nasai: Kawanabe.

I was set to give Agni some points, but it was pretty average by Atelier Team standards. On a lesser week, it would have gotten 2 or 3, but it was straight-up outclassed. Still love those drum samples though.

I think the only stipulation I'd require is that the nominated track shouldn't be an arrangement of an existing Mario Bros. tune.

(3 points) Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito Image Sound Track - Brilliant Marks of Heat Haze

It's indeed brilliant, and left its mark on me!

(2 points) Spyro the Dragon (Game Rip) - Dark Hollow
(1 point) Climax Landers Original Soundtrack - Lao's Theme

orion_mk3 Oct 27, 2007 02:34 PM

Ar tonelico II ~Sekai ni Hibiku Shoujotachi no Metafalica~ Original Soundtrack – Agni A strong start and some very nice parts in this song, with a few bare patches. Quite nice.

Climax Landers Original Soundtrack - Lao's Theme Some nice beats, but no real meat to back it up.

dodonpachi DAI-OU-JOU KE-TSU-I kisunajigokutachi ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK - DEFENSIVE LINE - Lurking in the Darkness (Stage4) An interesting and dark soundscape, this. The track doesn't quite capitalize on it, even if the mood is decent.

Giftpia Title Music + Nanashi-FM - The Grown-Up Game This song is definitely trying for a quirky vibe, but unfortunately it winds up being annoying due to the horrible quality of the vocals.

Legend of Heroes ~ Sora No Kiseki SC Original Soundtrack – Hamel Very subdued and ambient in style, and does a decent job of establishing mood.

Spyro the Dragon (Game Rip) - Dark Hollow Stewart Copeland is usually good in a pinch, though I've never heard his game work, only his movie and TV scores. The track has some innovative and quirky elements, but ultimately isn't as cohesive as I'd like, though is projects a good atmosphere.

Umihara Kawase (Game Rip) - Kawanabe Theme A happy-style song in the classic SNES-era style. It's not bad, but kind of samey in a crowded genre.

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito Image Sound Track - Brilliant Marks of Heat Haze A nice piece with some good woodwind, string, and percussive work. The voices weren't the best accent (sounded like they were saying "fool") but the piece was nice overall.

A little bland this week, but nothing that stuck out as particularly bad.

The Point Spread
Ar Tonelico - 2 pts.
Spyro - 2 pts.
Heat Haze - 2 pts.

Also, I realize this might be a bit late, but I was just wondering if anybody else thinks Liontamer's nom might be pushing it a little bit. I mean, IIRC we've had a ruling regarding new games before (i.e. not allowed), not to mention that pretty much every single person who's played Portal at this point knows and loves this song already. I call "not obscure."

(2 points) Legend of Heroes ~ Sora No Kiseki SC Original Soundtrack - Hamel

(1 point) Climax Landers Original Soundtrack - Lao's Theme

Spyro was very close to getting a point but I liked "Brilliant Marks of Heat Haze" too much.

Kaleb.G Oct 28, 2007 08:48 PM

3 points - dodonpachi DAI-OU-JOU KE-TSU-I kisunajigokutachi ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK - DEFENSIVE LINE - Lurking in the Darkness (Stage4)
2 points - Spyro the Dragon (Game Rip) - Dark Hollow
1 point - Legend of Heroes ~ Sora No Kiseki SC Original Soundtrack – Hamel

There were a couple other good tracks, but those were the three that stood out to me. I'm a fan of the dodonpachi DAI-OU-JOU KE-TSU-I kisunajigokutachi ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK, so that gets my top spot.

Oh man, wish I'd read this/thought of it sooner.

Yeah, so I've played Portal, and anyone who has not yet played Portal is hereby banned from SotW until they play Portal, so now every active SotW member has played Portal and therefore has very likely heard this song.

Seriously though, does no one else have an issue with this?

Drakken Oct 28, 2007 09:05 PM

I've played Portal, and yeah, that song is awesome. I wonder how many of us have really heard it, though?

Dhsu Oct 28, 2007 09:43 PM

Well...at least 4. :P

Drakken Oct 28, 2007 11:06 PM

Will edit with points shortly.

Agni: Sub-par for Atelier series standards. Nothing special about it.
Lao's Theme:
Defensive Line:
Not bad, but there's not enough variation for me.
The Grown-Up Game: I like cheery songs, but this one's too simple, and I don't care for the singing.
Hamel: The best song this week.
Dark Hollow: Perhaps the most interesting song of the batch, simply because it's different than most songs.
Kawanabe Theme: More enjoyable than most of this week's songs.
Brilliant Marks of Heat Haze: Quality stuff. Not as enjoyable as Kawanabe Theme, though.

Hamel - 2 pts.
Kawanabe Theme - 2 pts.
Brilliant Marks - 1 pt.
Dark Hollow - 1 pt.

And "Silver Wings" takes another Silver...Coincidence or no?

(lol @ random pick getting second. Love it!)

TheKnightOfNee Oct 29, 2007 12:49 AM

Well, my computer can't run any of those fancy Orange Box games, so I haven't heard this Portal song yet. And because of that, I'm fine with leaving it in SotW because it will be new to me.

Also, congrats to Blah getting gold on his first time nominating. Too bad we can't all be that lucky.

Kaleb.G Oct 29, 2007 02:18 AM

On the subject of Still Alive, I'm don't advocate jumping on newly released music for nomination in SotW. I've made this point before. And as with Katamari Damacy, for example, just because it doesn't seem popular out the door, doesn't mean everyone won't hear it a couple months from now. In fact, I'm currently making a point to not nominate anything that was released in the present year. Give the listeners some time, I say.

Golfdish from Hell Oct 29, 2007 02:34 AM

What's the controversy over Liontamer's nomination? I haven't even heard of the game or the composer, so voting 'yay'.

Bigblah Oct 29, 2007 07:48 AM

Haha, thanks guys. I was actually unsure of which track to nominate from the Yamibou Image soundtrack, since all of them were just so good. In the end I settled for the one with more percussion.

In any case, I'm happy one of the more obscure Noriyasu Agematsu works got some attention!

This is definitely more a matter of you needing to get out more. :tpg:

Elorin Oct 29, 2007 10:29 AM

Congrats, Bigblah! Excellent song choice there.

With regards to Portal, wow, the game looks really neat! But I don't think I'll be able to play it anytime in the near or distant future. :P For one, I tend to get a bit dizzy playing first person shooter type games.

Dhsu Oct 29, 2007 11:03 AM

Try the Flash version then. :)

THE POWER OF WATER Oct 29, 2007 01:36 PM

I'm going to call this one in favor of Still Alive being disqualified for now. There are enough heards/haven't-heards to put it to an eligibility vote, but that combined with the fact that the game was released less than three weeks ago puts this over the edge as far as novelty-is-not-obscurity goes. Bring it back in a few months (how many???) and see what it looks like then.

Seriously though, everyone needs to play Portal.

Dhsu Oct 29, 2007 02:10 PM

VICTOLY

Take that, Smelly Oji! :D

Well, Dr. Uzuki tabled his Odin Sphere nom indefinitely after the same arguments were invoked, so there's no real precedent that I can recall.

Dhsu Oct 29, 2007 02:42 PM

Maybe give it 12 weeks, like a 1st place track? 3 months still seems kinda short, but I'd say that's a good base period.

So, can the next SotW be put up now or must we await more deliberation?

We have one more incident that I can recall: "Zero" from Ace Combat Zero. That led to a decision of table the nomination until the soundtrack comes out. I don't necessarily agree to applying that to all cases, but it seemed reasonable to me for ACZ because of the combination of the series being rather popular here in terms of gameplay and music (disproportionately so compared to elsewhere, which is another interesting discussion topic) a soundtrack already being announced at the time of nomination.

But David Deluxe ended up pulling that one too after the soundtrack came out, so we still have no real precedent determining when a track becomes "not too new."
