SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced SEGA Superstars(tm) Tennis, a game that brings together some of the most treasured and well known characters from the SEGA universe, in some of the most unusual courts and outrageous settings ever imagined. Developed by Sumo Digital Ltd., SEGA Superstars Tennis will be released onthe Sony PlayStation® 3 computer entertainment system, Sony PlayStation 2, the Xbox 360(tm) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Nintendo Wii and DS, all hitting shelves early in 2008.

SEGA Superstars Tennis has over 15 playable SEGA idols including Sonic the Hedgehog, AiAi from Super Monkeyball fame, Ulala of Space Channel 5 and Amigo from Samba De Amigo. In addition to their own unique attributes, each character will also come equipped with their own superstar tennis skills, putting a whole new spin on each match played!

Exhibition mode offers the chance to challenge Sonic, or the character or your choice, to a match on one of many courts, including Sonic's home court of Green Hill Zone, or Amigo's Carnival Park court. Wherever you play there will be a host of SEGA celebrities cheering you on from courtside and by partaking in crazy doubles matches with your choice of partner, you could end up playing against some pretty unusual couples! Prove your SEGA hero is the shining star of SEGA Superstars Tennis by collecting silverware in the Tournament Mode. There will also be the opportunity to unlock a host of exciting extras which will be announced in the near future!

collecting silverware
I've always wanted to collect knives and forks in a tennis game! So yeah, every system except poor PSP and Atari Lynx. Only the PS3 and 360 versions will have online gameplay, making the others smell a bit. Sumo Digital is a pretty awesome choice of developer, they handled the amazing Outrun 2 Xbox port, along with the recent Virtua Tennis games! ALSO A SUDOKU GAME BLAM BLAM. This could be funtastic. I'm hoping for some more older, obscure Sega characters to pop up (Alex Kidd, Opa-Opa!) but they'll probably just shove Shadow and Marine in there. "Hey mates struth fuck whoa apples" *Everyone leaves*

^_^ I was very happy when I saw that this game had been announced. (As you can see) I really want a half-decent tennis game for the DS, and this one might just be it! Thank u, Sega.

Infernal Monkey Oct 19, 2007 07:38 AM

I'm amazed that the DS still hasn't gotten a good tennis game after being on the market for what, three years. ;_;

OmagnusPrime Oct 19, 2007 07:42 AM

Be interesting to see how this one shapes up as it could be a good laugh. It does remind me that they need to release another Space Channel 5 though.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Oct 19, 2007 07:48 AM

I do wish Nintendo and Sega wouldn't insist on ruining potentially good ideas by crowbarring Mario or Sonic into everything. Everybody's Golf was a great game, Mario Golf was gay as all fuck.

A decent remake of Smash Court Tennis (Read, the first one. After that the series went quickly downhill) with online play would be incredible whereas this looks pretty uninspired.

Infernal Monkey Oct 19, 2007 07:58 AM

But it wouldn't be a Sega 'superstar' game without Sonic! Remember, he's been in blockbuster smash hit games like Sonic 360, Sonic Riders, Sonic Heroes, Sonic 3D, Sonic Rivals, Sonic.. oh fuck! Actually now that I think about this, there needs to be a House of the Dead court where you can knock down zombies shuffling around the joint in search of the bathroom.

SuperSonic Oct 19, 2007 08:40 AM

It's about time Sonic got put in a tennis game. I'm debating between getting this for either Wii (Wiimote controls) or 360 (online multiplayer). This should be a fairly decent game. :D

Monkey King Oct 19, 2007 01:00 PM

Boy, putting the thing out for 5 completely disparate systems all at once just screams "quality", doesn't it? I feel bad for everyone who's expecting a good tennis game.

Dark Nation Oct 19, 2007 01:08 PM

Needs more Virtua Tennis 2.

I guess I might check this out at some point, but interest is "meh" right now.

Tails Oct 19, 2007 02:30 PM

I was hoping the days of Sega stealing every idea Nintendo has ever thought of was long done, but alas!

This isn't to say I won't buy it though, because I'm a faggot like that. SEGA FOR LIFE LOOOL ^____^

Bet you're waiting on a remake of Sonic Spinball as much as I am, too.

(Next up, Sonic Arkanoid.)

Sin Ansem Oct 19, 2007 10:06 PM

Sonic's attempts to mimic Mario now make me laugh.

I mean he's in Brawl, that should be relevant enough--*shot*

Everyone steals from everyone. Xbox guide button ahahaha.

Milking characters by making spinoffs like Tennis and such isn't an original idea. But I'm sure it'll be pretty cool when the final result iWHERE'S MY FUCKING COSMIC SMASH SEQUEL

Sorry for the huge bump, but Sega have just released a new bunch of screenshots of this.
Here are a couple:

IS THAT THE DUDE FROM JET GRIND RADIO?

Inhert Jan 4, 2008 06:13 PM

yes it is.

the game is better be at least as good as mario tennis, but I kind of doubt that...

Muzza Jan 4, 2008 07:47 PM

Beat. :jam: Fuck yes. But that monkey thing can burn in a fire. Super Fire Ball!! yes?

Parn Jan 4, 2008 08:48 PM

Beat versus NiGHTS in tennis with online play? Sold!

JasonTerminator Jan 4, 2008 08:51 PM

Everybody who keeps bashing this seems to be forgetting that this is being made by the people who made the best tennis games on the market.

Here's hoping that Virtua Tennis gameplay will finally get it's mainstream props with this.

Kimchi Jan 4, 2008 08:58 PM

This sounds intresting... YES JET RADIO!

Infernal Monkey Jan 4, 2008 11:09 PM

Why isn't Beat cel shaded? A bloody outrage, it is! I want to take this all the way to the prime minister! In Sumo Digital we trust! :3

Sin Ansem Jan 4, 2008 11:48 PM

Fuck this shit, they should all be in Brawl

Wall Feces Jan 4, 2008 11:50 PM

Why isn't Beat in a new JSR game is the proper question to ask :(

SuperSonic Jan 5, 2008 12:08 AM

We still don't have an exact release date, other than Q1 2008. Gamestop says March 4th for all five versions, but I want actual proof of that. I'm leaning towards getting it on the 360, unless they add online play for the Wii version.

Because the first two games didn't have Tony Hawk, so no one would buy the third either.

Yeah let's just throw every fucking character known to man in every fucking video game ever created into Brawl so it can become MUGEN.

Fail.

Well you're wrong about that, there has been one there among the first games released to the DS and it's one of the most awesome tennis games I've played. The game I'm talking about is "Prince of Tennis 2005: Crystal Drive", and it was only released in Japan in the winter of 2004. It's got a very realistic feel to it and it won't really give the balls to you like I feel many tennis games do nowadays, meaning you have to be in a good position when you swing your racket, and you can't just mash buttons until you hit the ball. The system is very sensitive (you can actually get a lot of outs and faults/lets in this game if you're not careful, which I find is a very rare occurrence in most tennis games) and you really have full control over your character, a huge amount of shots is available. On top of this, the characters have the cool specials that the Prince of Tennis series is known for and it really doesn't ruin the gameplay as it's very well balanced.

If you are a big tennis game nut this game is a must have. Even though it's in Japanese you don't really need to understand Japanese to be able to play it.

Anyways, to get to the real topic, I have no hope for this new Sega tennis game. I think it looks like crap and probably will play as such.

Infernal Monkey Jan 5, 2008 08:29 PM

That's pretty good to know, I've never heard of this so called prince of tennis, but I'd like to meet him one day. For brunch, if possible.

Doubtful considering tennis games are the one thing Sega's still great at, but who knows, maybe Sonic's diarrhea power can drag this down as well.

That's what I was thinking.

Well okay, I guess Sega never has made a bad Virtua Tennis game (at least all the ones I've played are good), but this is not Virtua Tennis. It just seems to be a crappy copy of the Mario Tennis games. And the characters they're gonna use, pfft, a damn monkey, that out of date blue hedgehog and a space chick (etc etc.)? Wow, they fit so well together! I wonder what more thrilling combinations we are in for!

Waferballs Jan 6, 2008 02:34 AM

Where is Alex Kidd ;__; ?

Infernal Monkey Jan 6, 2008 03:21 AM

Sitting out in the parking lot with Wonderboy, Ristar, Opa-Opa and Psycho Fox. :(

FatsDomino Jan 6, 2008 04:42 AM

All the good Sega heroes have gone to a better place. Remember the Alamo.

JazzFlight Jan 6, 2008 10:50 AM

An interesting thing is that they have two sentient monkeys in the game (Samba de Amigo guy and Monkey Ball guy), but they have different designs.

Could we work on getting characters into the game who actually look a lot different than each other instead of having two monkeys?

SuperSonic Jan 7, 2008 01:02 PM

So, you guys are already labeling the game as "suck" without even playing it or is it just the fact that certain Sega heroes not in this game are already dead and buried? They brought Nights back so have a little hope.

Zuare Jan 7, 2008 01:56 PM

The Magic Box website has screenshots of the other versions, and a complete (?) character list:

Sonic the Hedgehog - Sonic, Amy, Dr. Eggman
Virtua Fighter - Akira Yuki
Jet Set/Grind Radio - Beat
Space Channel 5 - Ulala
Super Monkey Ball - Aiai, Meemee, Baby
Samba de Amigo - Amigo, Amiga
NiGHTS into Dreams - NiGHTS
Billy Hatcher & the Giant Egg - Billy Hatcher, Rolly Roll
Virtua Tennis - tba

HOLY SHIT ALEX KIDD IS IN IT =D

This just went from a oooooaaauuuugh purchase to a DAY ONE. I hope there's also an Alex Kidd themed stage, maybe one with blocks to smash, and one of them has death in it, and he chases you about the screen. THEN A HELICOPTER.

No screens of the Space Harrier bit have surfaced yet, and apparently there's an entire army of mini-games (EIGHTY?!) that have yet to be revealed! I assume by eighty they mean.. eighty based on a select few themes.. but.. still.. eighty!

And some screens of the DS version while I'm at it. Like the 360/PS3, this one's also online. Only Wii and PS2 miss out on that.

nuttyturnip Feb 15, 2008 09:51 AM

The whole bottom screen dedicated to the score? Way to efficiently use space, Nintendo!

Sucks about online play for Wii, since you'll be able to use the Wiimote like in Wii Tennis. I guess Microsoft will be getting my money instead.

SuperSonic Feb 15, 2008 11:14 AM

Microsoft will be getting my money as well. Online play vs. wii-mote tennis and online play is the victor. I'm actually surprised that the Wii version won't have online play, yet the DS version will.

Of course, I might wait on this one since the release date is March 18th and Brawl comes out 9 days prior to that.

nuttyturnip Mar 26, 2008 07:24 PM

So now that this is out, is anyone playing it? Early reviews weren't kind, but the sense I'm getting from normal gamers is that it's a fairly decent game.

Rockgamer Mar 26, 2008 07:45 PM

I've only played the demo (PS3 version), but based on that this game is terrible. How can a game based on Virtua Tennis (best tennis series ever) fail at having good gameplay so much? I mean, somehow they managed to dumb it down yet make it harder at the same time, though it's probably hard only because it sucks so much.

To be more specific, I don't like how there's not that many shots to pull off (the game only uses two face buttons), the mechanics of it all seems kind of floaty, and the special moves are just cheap (that's more of just a personal complaint of mine, as I just prefer realistic tennis to this fantasy stuff). I wouldn't say it's the worse tennis game I've ever played, but they could have done a lot of things much better.

So yeah, I'd probably never get this game, since I doubt the full version is any better. Even with three different playable monkeys (monkeys~<3), this game still just isn't that appealing to me. That being said, I wouldn't mind checking out the DS version. I'd like to see how the touchscreen controls work.

lemonmanko Mar 26, 2008 09:52 PM

haven't tried the touch screen controls yet but yea i've played the game on DS and its pretty decent reminds me of mario tennis for gbc

Dr.eggman is a douche in the game.

nuttyturnip Mar 26, 2008 10:22 PM

It sucks that there's a PS3 demo but not one for 360. I don't download many demos, but this is one I'd definitely try before buying.

SuperSonic Mar 26, 2008 11:04 PM

Same here...I don't see why there isn't a demo on the Marketplace. I wasn't going to buy the game right away though since I'm still hooked on Brawl, but depending on how well it played I might've purchased it.

Does the PS3 version also have online play?

Rockgamer Mar 26, 2008 11:15 PM

The demo said that the PS3 version does have online play.

My sister actually played through the whole demo, which was worth it for the comedy factor. Basically, every time you finished a set (well, once time ran out, since they never actually let you finish a full set), something was unlocked in the demo. First it was a minigame, then a new course, then a whole bunch of music tracks. We kept making jokes that you could probably unlock the whole game if you play long enough (obviously you couldn't, but it was just funny seeing something new come up every time a set finished).

Tails Mar 27, 2008 12:30 PM

As I said earlier, I picked the game up, and spent the better part of this morning playing online with Omagnus. No noticeable lag, which is good considering he's across the pond from me.

The game itself is pretty much what I expect it to be. A "segafied" version of Virtua Tennis. Your move set is limited to your basic four, a topsin, a slice, and with two button combos that produce a drop shot and a high lob. There's also the optional smash for high hits, and the strength of your hit depends on button sensitivity, which I like. The Superstar State is hilariously campy and hard to counter in some cases, but it can be turned off in online play.

The game itself offers up a hilarious "TV Service" (it's damn well done though) that allows you to spectate games in progress and even highlights from completed games. If you go into it expecting to find something in depth as say, Top Spin and VT as far as game play is concerned, you either do not know what game you're buying or you're just stupid.

Overall it's a blast and a half, especially with a partner. I give it a B+. Only gripe so far is that Pudding's voice is terrible. No problem though since I'm just going to stick to playing as Amy from now on. She sounds so funny when she serves, swear to god.

OmagnusPrime Mar 27, 2008 06:48 PM

More or less I'm going to echo what Tails said. It's campy as all fuck, and in-love with Sega, but then if you don't expect that then what the did you think this was? I've not played many of the mini-games in the Superstars mode, but the ones I have played so far are pretty entertaining and some require a bit more precision than you might think. If you like Sega's various mascots, like a bit of bright, colourful, bouncy, silly fun, then it could be worth a look. If those things turn you off, walk away now.

Infernal Monkey Apr 7, 2008 10:00 AM

So this is good? =) I'm waiting for the 360 version to drop in price a bit, because no matter how many 'it's cool okay' erections I may have for Alex Kidd, I'm not paying $100 for a sports game. >=( The PS2 version comes with a free controller here, it looks like it was made from dead camels or something.

I like how they called him Alex the Kid in the IGN review. Nobody plays games at IGN. Go back to reviewing horses arses IGN.

Yeah.

That's right.

I went there.

nuttyturnip Apr 7, 2008 09:13 PM

There's finally a demo on the 360 Marketplace today. The tennis wasn't that great (but maybe it's because I'm no good at Virtua Tennis either), but the House of the Dead minigame was hilarious. I wouldn't pay $50 for this, but if I find it on sale somewhere, I'd pick it up.
