Brütal Legend: YOU CAN'T KILL THE METAL. METAL WILL LIVE ON.

ROCK AND ROLL, MAN!

From the wonderful mind of Tim Schafer, I have LONG been awaiting his next game and I'm fucking STOKED about this title.

According to the site, the game was going to be called Brutal Legend and would star Tenacious D frontman and actor Jack Black as a rock band roadie who dies and must escape hell to reach rock heaven. At the time, Schafer said some of the rumors about the game were true, but a lot were false. The name was all but confirmed last month, when GameSpot discovered a trademark application for Brütal Legend.
More details are emerging today, as Brütal Legend is the featured story in the next issue of Game Informer, the cover of which is now posted on its Web site. The cover image proclaims it to be "a rock 'n' roll road show through the twisted mind of Tim Schafer" and also specifies that the game features Jack Black as roadie Eddie Riggs.
The magazine is also reporting that the game will feature "a stable of heavy metal legends" in addition to Black and is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

It's from the same dude who made Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and Psychonauts, guys. This cannot POSSIBLY be a bad game. <3

LONG LIVE SCHAFER~

Dark Nation Oct 13, 2007 02:14 PM

Wow, nice. Psychonauts, while not my favorite game, was very original, so this can't be bad at all. I guess I'll get this sometime (once I get my 360 >_> ).

Grawl Oct 13, 2007 02:19 PM

Not for PC? That sucks.

DO NOT WANT

I wish Schafer would sit his ass in the director's chair and let someone else take care of the gameplay mechanics. Psychonauts was a brilliant game (only a fag would think otherwise) but it rides entirely on its characters, sense of humor and personality, the platforming was average at best.

It will never happen due to licensing but Hoagie NEEDS to make an appearance, he was made for this game.

Zeal Oct 14, 2007 03:40 AM

Anything Schafer touches always ends up being gold, so the haters can keep their mouths shut. This game will exhibit the same level of quality as the rest of his legendary AAA titles.

Anyone who can bring us Full Throttle and Grim Fandango is a legend in my book.

Elixir Oct 14, 2007 04:05 AM

Holy shit the main character looks like Clooney.

guyinrubbersuit Oct 14, 2007 03:54 PM

I definitely want to pick this game up. I'm a huge fan of Psychonauts, though I have yet to experience the glory of Schafer's other games. :(

FatsDomino Oct 16, 2007 06:05 PM

Let us all band together and make THIS game a commercial success. We need more Tim Schafer games.

Also, this is the 2222nd thread that I've subscribed to on GFF. Awesometastic! =D

guyinrubbersuit Oct 16, 2007 07:59 PM

Seriously. It should be a crime that Psychonauts withered away in commercial obscurity.

Infernal Monkey Oct 16, 2007 09:05 PM

First non-gameplay Trailer :3:

NOT FOR YOU.

guyinrubbersuit Oct 16, 2007 09:40 PM

That trailer was fucking awesome. However, I wonder how will the gameplay be? Or will it be more like Psychonauts where the gameplay was pretty by the numbers and it's strength will be in the witty writing and great voice acting?

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 18, 2007 11:16 AM

Oh god yes. <3

I was starting to think we'd never see another game from Double Fine after Psychonauts' low sales. This could end up having the most generic hack 'n slash gameplay imaginable and the writing will still make it gold.

Hopefully this time they won't trust G4 to do all their advertising for them.

ZeroSlash Oct 18, 2007 12:07 PM

After reading game informer's article for it it sounds anything less than generic. It sounds like it's going to be more of an action game with warfare elements with different types of recruits like slaves of a mine who only used their heads as tools for digging are known as the headbangers. So I can still see a lot of creativity put into the gameplay as well. The guitar jamming "magic" system sound fun.

As much as I loved Psychonauts, I'll be waiting anxiously for this one and when I get a 360.

Monkey King Oct 18, 2007 12:17 PM

Tim Schaefer is one of the few people left whose products I will buy unquestioningly. He even put an umlaut in the name. This cannot possibly suck.

So is Jack Black voicing the protagonist, or one of the supporting cast? I can't really watch the trailer from work, here.

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 18, 2007 12:41 PM

The trailer doesn't have any voice acting aside from the demon narrator at the beginning, but I think Jack Black is the protagonist.

FatsDomino Oct 18, 2007 07:46 PM

Hmmm... I should probably scan this 10 page article. It's pretty good. BRB...

Additional Spam:
Alrighty, here's all 10 pages. Scanned it at 300dpi, cropped it, shrunk it 50%, and saved it at medium quality. It all comes out to 5.28 MB. Since we can't have attachments bigger than 1.95 MB you guys have to suffer through loading images so hold onto your butts. Enjoy, for this shows actual screens from the game and it's pretty fucking sweet. =)

Wow Zeal. Nice of you to steal my Grim Fandango thunder. :\

on another note,

I liked GF so much I bought two copies, and I got a free t-shirt for pre-ordering one of them. I'm looking forward to see some gameplay for BL.

galen Oct 19, 2007 01:48 AM

Hm.

The art direction is terrible. They seriously need to decide whether or not they are going for realism or more "cartoony" stylization.

EDIT: and while I'm here, I'd like to say the style/art direction of Psychonauts was great, but they seriously needed to learn some color theory. That game was the color of vomit, through and through.

FatsDomino Oct 19, 2007 08:52 AM

Is it just me or are my scanned images not showing anymore? =/

Can someone confirm this? I'll reupload somewhere else if photos.cx want to be a fag.

Infernal Monkey Oct 19, 2007 09:01 AM

Yeah, not showing here anymore either. The internet ate them!

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 19, 2007 09:01 AM

Yeah, they all appear to be broken now for some reason. Brütal.

FatsDomino Oct 19, 2007 09:26 AM

You guys have any recommendation for a place that won't be a dick? I can understand why they'd take them down but god damn how in the hell does a place like that screen that shit? They must have a weird dimension filter for this stuff.

Additional Spam:
Alright, I've decided that Paco hotlinking to Game Informer's website with that cover image could have linked them to this thread and then when they saw the scans they contacted photos.cx to get them removed (yet another possible reason to add to why you should never hotlink). It's a possibility so I've uploaded the cover and edited Paco's post accordingly.

Additional Spam:
I've reuploaded the scans. Hopefully they'll stay up this time.

It's actually Dio, who's also supposed to be in the game (and incidentally was also in the Tenacious D movie.) The song is Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules".

While the subject matter isn't something that I'm particularly close to, I have no objections against it, and it's Tim Schafer so it's impossible to not care. The game looks good, but at this point I'm wondering if they're going to do the same mistake as in Psychonauts where the actual gameplay was too far behind the designs. Didn't seem to me like it's much more than mashing the axe-swing button and occasionally throwing some magic spells with the guitar.

Also a bit disappointing that it hasn't been announced for the PC, but looking at some other recent games like BioShock, Gears of War, Assassin's Creed and even Guitar Hero III, I think a decent PC port released somewhere down the line is more than possible.

FatsDomino Oct 21, 2007 02:33 AM

Yeah, it's not like it's coming out tomorrow or anything, and I don't remember Psychonauts being available for PC at first either. I'm prepared for the game in any case. It will be mine to own!

It was released simultaneously on Xbox and PC, the PS2 version came a few months later. I can only imagine that not releasing Brütal Legend on PC (at first, at least) has something to do with piracy, considering the low sales numbers of Psychonauts.

The people who say Psychonauts didn't have good gameplay are seriously misguided, unless they're referring solely to the Meat Circus.

FatsDomino Oct 21, 2007 03:18 AM

The Meat Circus was the place that I wanted to kill whoever designed the evil side wall grid climbing area. It was the most odd and infuriatingly difficult bit I've ever done in my life. But oh man you do feel you've accomplished something once you've gotten past it. Everything before it was gravy and controlled fine.

Huh, I always thought the PC version came out later. I didn't really hear much about the PC version. It was always XBOX and PS2 version coming later. Well, I suppose piracy was an issue then. We'll have to wait and see. And honestly any anti-piracy programs on the PC means it will automatically be pirated by me. I don't tolerate root-kits or any of that nonsense on my machine. I'll tolerate STEAM at most and that is all. Which means one of these days I'll get around to downloading Bioshock illegally.

Krelian Oct 23, 2007 02:50 AM

Here look at something related and interesting!

Double Fine Projects!

BRUTAL LEGEND and, oh, some Psychonauts thing coming soon too. Huh.

FatsDomino Oct 23, 2007 08:24 AM

As I said on Kotaku, that coming soon with Psychonauts in the background might just be a placeholder graphic that they use for all their coming soon stuff. It would be really nice if it was for a Psychonats sequel though. =)

The really maddening part is that there was a sick mercy to that part. Every time you fell and landed in the water, it would just start you over back at the bottom rather than dock you a life. So you could just keep doing it over and over and over and over without penalty. Not that unlimited lives meant that doing it 400 times was any less annoying.

I'm inclined to agree, though. The gameplay in Psychonauts was, at best, mediocre. You just shot things and then went on your way, jumping from platform to platform. The only reason the game didn't suck is because the gameplay was de-emphasized in favor of exploring the levels anyway. Bosses were just annoying speedbumps, even though the blueprint tank was a wonder to behold.

Paco Jan 13, 2009 02:16 PM

I know it's a sickly late bump but, I didn't want to start a new thread anyway.

New trailer was released on Eurogamer late last month. It's still about 7-8 months away though. :(

Paco Mar 13, 2009 10:01 AM

Another bump.

OXM posted new info about a month ago regarding new details about the game. Now that EA has picked up the game for publishing, Schafer sat down with OXM and gave a few more details about this game, including that Robert Halford (of Judas Priest fame) will be voicing the General Lionwhyte; leader of the Tainted Coil demon army. This game is looking more metal every time I read new stuff on it.

I'm really hoping that the screens released so far are deliberately underwhelming, because most of it looks pretty uninspired. I mean, compare the screenshots to that first piece of concept art Acer posted. If you want to capture those smoky touches of Frank Frazetta in-game, the first step is not to make everything shiny! The characters end up looking like action figures.

However, that trailer does show off some cool designs (the worm thing, the tower) that actually get at the craziness of the album covers Schafer was supposedly inspired by, so I'm hoping the game has plenty more of that up its sleeve.

Paco Apr 7, 2009 12:01 PM

Gamespot interviewed "the legendary" Tim Schafer at the Double Fine studios last week. Bunch of new artwork, screens and concept renders are also there.

Check it out.

OmagnusPrime Apr 21, 2009 10:13 AM

Brutal Legend now has a release date, and in a rather freaky coincidence it'll apparently be hitting store shelves two years to the day since this thread was started, October 13th.

Quote:

Though that one Nazi at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark would have you believe otherwise, having your face melted off by a supernatural display of awesome power is probably one of the best things that could ever happen to you. Paco. Did you see this? Brace yourself now.

Activison is suing Double Fine to Stop the release of Brutal Legend

In short of things;

- Vivendi merged with Activision
- Activison dropped Brutal Legend
- Double Fine looked for publisher, according to sources of Variety, Activison tried to block that process
- Double Fine sings up with EA Partners
- Activision sues Double Fine to stop release of Brutal Legend

And the reason? Oh it had garnered plenty of attention at E3 that now Activison wants a piece of that pie. :\

Oh its just not "sequel" worthy enough is why they dropped it? Just disgusting.

Ridiculous. They dropped it, so it should be tough titties for them.

I wonder if they'll try to do the same with Atari over Ghostbusters...

What I'm exactly wondering is how Activision even intends to hold up in court without getting laughed at by everyone inside.

If they gave up all legal rights to the game, they can't do anything about it, and as a company they should know better than to try something so frivolous as this. It's a bad move definitely on their part both from a financial and reputation standpoint.

They might still have the right for the name or the script or some other detail like that. I think this might lead up to how much money EA wants to throw Activisions way...

"Preorder" + "Gamestop" = automatic diss. A game as big as this and you're preordering it at Gamestop? That's grounds for deportation.

The Plane Is A Tiger Aug 11, 2009 02:11 PM

Yeah, what Nutty said. I figured it was pretty self-explanatory. Besides, does one really need to announce that Gamestop is taking pre-orders for something? I could walk into mine right now and put down $5 on Madden 2015.

Now if this was some small release that you'd be lucky to find anywhere else, like an SMT game, then this would be excusable.

Rockgamer Aug 11, 2009 02:14 PM

Yes, GameStop is a shit store, but how many other stores actually offer preorders (along with the bonuses that GS offers along with them)? The only major ones I can think of are Game Crazy and Best Buy, which both offer the game at the same price and usually have worse (if any) bonuses. If you're gonna get the game as soon as it releases and you're willing to pay full price, then you might as well preorder from GS.

The Plane Is A Tiger Aug 11, 2009 02:24 PM

Let's not go down this road and turn this thread into yet another one about why Gamestop sucks. I'm sure we all have horror stories, and if not then you're one lucky bastard.

For the sake of answering Rock's post, so many stores have sales on new games within the first week or two of their release that it's almost a waste of money to pre-order a game barring some sort of pre-order bonus. Without something cool like that 20th anniversary soundtrack that came with Castlevania: PoR I only go as a last resort these days since I got fed up with being lectured like a child for either not pre-ordering the game or not wanting to put down money on something else while picking up my pre-order.

Brutal Legend Demo Graphical Issues

Just finished going through the brutal legend demo on ps3 and while the game did indeed melt my face it seemed like there were a lot of graphical issues for something this close to release. Pop in, jaggies, artifacting etc. I was wondering if anyone had tried out the 360 demo. Are the problems present there as well?

Paco Sep 23, 2009 11:42 AM

For those Xbox 360 owners who didn't pre-order the game, the demo goes up for grabs on Xbox Live tomorrow.

I totally forgot about the demo too. I was out of town this weekend with other things going on and I'm downloading it right now. I'm really stoked to be playing it already.

Dark Nation, I hope that the bleeping is akin to how Metalocalypse does it with electric guitars and stuff. Because if so fuck yes awesome! =')

I tried out the PSN demo and I found it to be fun but not something I'm eagerly exited for.
I wasn't a fan of the controls because they felt a bit clunky and I'm sure the game will have some sort of huge epic ending but it's not a game I would pay full price for, I'll just wait for a price drop.

No. Hard Pass. Oct 2, 2009 06:49 PM

I was so excited I put an extra hump in the “m” in my signature.
Dying. I adore this man so much, that cover letter is the greatest thing ever. I've read the Ball Blaster story before, probably in an EDGE interview. Awesome stuff.

Gamestop fucked me over on my pre-order (I'm never shopping there again, but that's another story.) and I was forced to buy it elsewhere. But hey, I ended up buying it at Best Buy and, if you buy it there, you get a download token to nab the Brütal Legend Three-Pack (Motörhead - We Are The Road Crew, Testament - More Than Meets The Eye and Tenacious D - The Metal) of downloadable songs from the Rock Band store. For those of you who own Rock Band 1 or 2, this is infinitely better than the GameStop "exclusive" Tenacious D axe, since you can actually use this outside of this game. Plus, seriously, FUCK GameStop.

Also, FUCKING TESTAMENT, GODDAMNIT!

FatsDomino Oct 14, 2009 06:12 AM

Does the Tenacious D axe even do anything special? =o

Brutal Legend is also one of several games this week that Best Buy is giving a $10 gift card with if you're part of their Reward Zone program, so I picked it up there for the song pack and getting $10 back in a month or so. My Toys R Us didn't have it in yet this morning, so I couldn't get it as part of their buy 2 get 1 free sale anyway.

I don't know how many of you are completion-obsessed but, in case you are, I found nifty little map with locations for almost everything; they apparently only have 97% of the stuff found. I might make use of it later but right now I'm having a blast finding out where the bound serpents are.

I've already purchased a ton of upgrades for the Deuce, found 40 serpents, have every available upgrade in the Motorforge so far and still have 800 fire tributes to spare.

Additional Spam:
HOLY SHIT! Brian Posehn is in this game too!? He plays a dude called "The Hunter" and he gives you hunting challenges to beat his scores. Fucking DYING over here! :tpg:

Single Elbow Oct 15, 2009 03:28 PM

Shit, the longer I go on the game just gets better.

MASSIVE spoilers ahead.

Spoiler:
So you defeat Lionwhyte and of course everyone is peachy keen when Lars stops and decides that Doviculus must be stopped once and for all, but that's also a short-lived promise because Doviculus comes raining on their parade looking for "Succoria" which by now is suspected as Ophelia due to the Black Tear Rebellion. Doviculus denigrates the human race until Lars, who along with the rest of the team, hid, came out and proclaimed himself the "king of all humans". Doviculus was all "uh, no." and proceeds to stab Lars dead. Lita escapes with the bus while Eddie and Ophelia makes a daring escape when Doviculus summons a monster to destroy the Pleasure Dome to the music of Dragonforce's " Through the Fire and Flames" which made the escape very. fucking. awesome.

Spoiler:
Currently found out that Eddie is the son of Riggnarok (ballin') and currently fucking around. Bladehenge is occupied by Doviculus so enemies there are harder. The town I'm in is a jungle and currently making frequent trips to Succoria's (Ophelia unleashed due to plot device) turf, which is very gloomy, which impressed me a fucking lot. Doom metal man! The chandeliers, gravestones and the overall atmosphere of the place just emits Doom metal. Fuckin' 5 stars.

Currently out of Tributes because things are very expensive later on, so I just look for serpents to free and relics to raise. Plus my Deuce right now look fucking sexy. Also got that solo where you cover an area with fire which is just <3.

I'm about ready to trade in Street Fighter IV, see if I can get any significant amount of cash for this. Tired of being broke, need this shit in my veins!

Paco Oct 16, 2009 08:11 AM

NO!!! Don't trade in SFIV! I still play online!

(I'm... lonely... :()

Dark Nation Oct 16, 2009 08:52 PM

Well I had pre-ordered from Gamestop online, so I'll let you know what the Tenacious D axe does after I get more into the game, since it just arrived today :)

(I decided to take the normal shipping time instead of paying more, thus why I have it now instead of sooner).

Ramenbetsu Oct 21, 2009 01:45 AM

I love this game so much. The trade was worth it. So worth it.

Awesome! Thanks for this, I'm still enjoying driving around but I'm sure I'll eventually get sick of it and then this might be just the ticket.

This game is freakin' fantastic. I'm amazed at the general reception of "it's pretty good but", I really think this is one of the best games ever made. It's incredibly involved, really well-written, really balanced, original in gameplay without being too messy (I don't know what people are complaining about regarding "too many things at once", the gameplay is perfectly balanced for me), and the graphics engine and design are just incredible. It also has by far the best lip sync I've ever seen in a game. Seriously, these characters actually look like they're speaking, not like they're sock puppets for the voice actors. I was just blown away by that.

Easily my favorite game of the year, maybe even of the entire generation. Just fantastic.

Oh yeah. I'm thinking of getting a gold account so I can try some multiplayer, anyone here into that?

Every little bit of enthusiasm put into the presentation is just amazing. I get excited at EVERYTHING I find.

Ashton Nov 3, 2009 12:57 AM

Mighty fuck, this game is almost tied with Demon's Souls for goty, imo. Fuck yeah.

In other news, is a handy compiled soundtrack made yet?

There's also this one awesome piece that plays if you don't have the radio/car nearby, but I can't find a name to it :(

surasshu Nov 3, 2009 01:21 AM

Unfortunately the official score pieces aren't labeled (other than as "original score") on the pause screen... Definitely hoping for an OST at some point of the original tracks, some of them are fantastic. I really like the one that plays right before you fight Lionwhyte, when you arrive at his palace of pleasure or whatever it's called.

Anyway enough banter: Brutal Legend OST : Music > Game Music - Mininova. Not sure if it's truly complete etc. but that's the one I grabbed a couple days ago, so it works at least.

EDIT: Slightly better quality version of Kabbage Boy - Girlfriend :3:

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Feb 8, 2010 05:36 AM

Amazon.co.uk are selling Brutal Legend for £15 as part of their half-term sale, it's about the best deal on there actually and as I'm getting a massive back-dated housing benefit payment tomorrow I might well pick it up.

Ashton Apr 17, 2010 12:27 AM

Back from the grave

Has anyone been able to get the unique tracks? The regular BGM and the like.

S_K May 12, 2010 06:39 AM

I keep putting this game off for some reason, I just can't seem to get my head around the clunky strategy elements. I've beaten the first couple of parts and I'm just after the part where you recruit the roadies, any quick advice for a newbie to the strategy stuff?
