PlayStation 3 Fan Noise. Annoyingly loud, ain't it?
The last thread split its pants while bending over to pick up a mint. PlayStation 3 is the sequel to the smash hit movie PlayStation 2: World Domination (unrated special edition!) In this thread we can have a gay old time talking about PlayStation 3. Firmware updates, exciting announcements, rumours of exciting announcements, online goodness, questions, answers, things! This thread is not for GameFAQ character battles (VOTE VOTE VOTE) between the PlayStation 3 and the other systems, because that's very retarded. Again, if you wish to discuss a PS3 game in great detail with the other FRIENDS OF GAMINGFORCE™, feel free to make a thread! We're in low supply of PS3 game threads! Having everything crammed up in here results in tinea, and nobody likes that!
Have a fun, enjoy! |
You guys should have just slapped them on the hand or banned one from the thread.
Anyway, I bought Heavenly Sword and I am loving it. I definitely feel a difference between the final build and the demo. I had an audience as well, that described watching the game as incredibly easy and entertaining because it was like watching a movie. People would walk away and come back and ask what happened. It was a pretty good experience. While I kind of do understand people complaining about the shortness of the game, as I only played for a few hours and am about 50% done now, it's still a great game. And if people buy it, we get downloadable content. I kind of want to buy Lair but I don't know. My next PS3 game is between that and Ninja Gaiden Sigma, unless if I don't buy any before Folklore's release, which is going to be the next killer action/adventure/RPG title most def. |
I'm still waiting on that sf2 hd remix game along with Fifa 08. The demo came out last night and it isn't so bad. I want a Winning Eleven game for ps3 though >=/.
|
I played the demo of Puzzle Fighter and it was pretty offputting. One of the big draws of Capcom 2D games has always been their wonderful design and sprite work. What is the point of even bothering to make an HD version if you don't bother properly updating the sprites themselves. Now everything else is sharp HD resolution, while the sprites are blurry upscaled crap :(
|
The game isn't really worth purchasing. The demo itself is enough to make you interested but not all the way. SF2HD looks like it'll have great backgrounds though, did you check out Balrog's stage?

I beat Heavenly Sword after a 3hour sit followed by 6 hours of sleep and then a 5hour sit which finished Heavenly Sword. The final boss was one of the best Boss Battles I've ever had. Man was that guy a bastard... but what a good fight he put up.
Also I can't say I've cared about the characters of a game since Iplayed Final Fantasy 8 so job well done goes to Andy Serkis and the guys at Ninja Theory. Here's to hoping for a sequel. |

I've been looking for Heavenly Sword but no luck. :( I'm still learning and playing Resistance online from time to time too.
Blacksite Area 51 has my interest piqued though, as that game looks pretty nifty. Any announcements on when a demo is going to be available to play online? |
Quote:
I can't play Resistance if I know that Warhawk is there. I'm really not an FPS guy so even if I practice I won't get far skillwise anyway. |
Same here. I'm always up for some WarHawk, but I'm afraid that Unreal Tournament (series) is the only FPS I ever bother playing online.
|
Anyone know what the latest firmware did? It's version 1.93.
|
Quote:
Also, the FIFA 08 demo is pretty shit. It looks horrible. Even worse than FIFA 06. |
Ratchet and Clank Future is going to be such an epic game. Go pre-order it cuz you get a demo to play.
|
That's only if you pre-order at a GameStop though am I correct. You don't get the demo if you pre-order at EB.
|
I believe both places have them. They just came in this week.
|
Well then, when I go to switch my pre-order of Rock Band from 360 to PS3 (due to the wireless controller thing) and pick up GGXX: Accent Core I may very well have to place a pre-order on R&C: ToD aswell. ;)
|
Finally, I'm gonna buy my Ps3 tomorrow. But I need some advice. I can get the 60gb model and the 80gb one (with motorstorm).
What's the difference between the two? I mean, besides the obvious, does the new processor makes any difference in performance than the emotion processor? I'm worried that some games will run smoothly with the new processor than the emotion one. I don't care about reto-compatibility since I already have a PSX and Ps2. |
the 60gb version has the EE chip but not the 80gb. and beside the HDD that's the only difference. it's up to you if you prefer hardware emulation or software...
and if you don't care about backward compatibility then go with your budget. I'm not sure how much more the 80gb version is over the 60gb. |
When you don't care about backwards compatibility, why would you worry about any differences in performance between the Emotion Engine and software emulation? In case you were wondering, it doesn't have an effect on PS3 games whatsoever.
|
Well he said something like, "does the new processor make a difference..." so I think that he thinks that the 80Gb PS3 has a different CPU then the 60Gb one. I haven't checked the stats in a while so I don't know if that's true, however if it were differenct and if the original CPU was a 90nm chip then they would have only made the new one a 60nm chip which only decreases heat and power consumption which has no effect on the games.
Besides that there's no difference between the two models PS3 game wise. Inhert and Rock are right about the BC stuff. |
Thanks for the advice. When I said "worried about games running smooth" i meant Ps3 games. I have no idea of the Ps3 hardware and I kinda got the idea that the new model would improve the game's performance.
But that's good to know. I'll go with the 60gb model then since I don't care about Motorstorm and I don't think paying an adittional $100 just for the hard drive is a good idea. |
Rumble in SIXAXIS confirmed
Quote:
Is this going to be called the Dual Shock 3 or the SIXAXIS 2? |
Now what they'll need to do is do a bunch of patches for all PS3 games without rumble or at the very least enable this new controller to do rumble for PS2 and PSX games.
|
Quote:
|
From what I've heard from the leaked reports it's just called the DualShock 3.
@AcerBandit The PS3 already has rumble enabled for all PS2 games if you're using a PS2 controller via USB. So when the DualShock 3 comes out, all they'll need is one minor update to send that same rumble datastream to the new PS3 controller, no biggie. We'll probably even get the patch a good while before the new controller even hits the market. UPDATE Tgs07: PS3 Rumble Controller Confirmed - Kotaku This means that it will probably hit the market before the end of the year since Burnout is due late January '08. |
Ahh, I knew I should have waited before buying the extra controller. Any announcements how much more the new controller is gonna cost? I'm hoping it's not more than 20 bucks.
|
At least the controllers will be worth 50 bucks now.
|
That's if they're going to swap the SIXAXIS with the DualShock 3. Otherwise the DS3 may just be an add-in whic would therefore be an increased price over the standard controller. (like in the PS1 days)
UPDATE The new Ratchet game is going to have DualShock 3 support. But of course the controller doesn't come out here till Spring '08 so most will have played, beaten and moved on by then. For thoes who won't be getting a PS3 till early next year however, good for you ;) |
Ps3 Home news and it aint a good one
Quote:
|
Does anyone who isn't a total dork even care about Home?
|
I don't really. When I read this in a site, you got people jumping up and down like little girls cause of this. I don't even know what this home is nor do I care. Thought I let ones around here know about it since it's ps3 related ;p.
|
Home is like Sims online minus having to look for the "health" of your avatar. You can customize your room with all sort of furniture. If you put a TV in this room you can than stream video on it from your HDD and your friends that you invite in your room can watch it, same thing for radio and frame you put on wall. After that you can mett people in the Home plaza where you can just chat like most 3D chat do now (like second life). There's an arcade too where you can play pool, bowling and various little arcade games. Oh I almost forgot that there's a theater where you can go watch some trailers (about movie, games etc...)
All that is in the beta for now. The whole version is suppose to include a room where you can show the trophies you have obtain. Think about those trophies like the xbox achievements. apparently that room will have big screen that will show some of your replay from various game. I don't remember if there's more to it, but I think there will probably a mall where you'll be able to buy more furnitures for your room, or buying bigger room or something.... I'm mainly interested in Home for the achievements/trophies thing and to customize my room (that,s my favorite part in the game Sims XD) oh I almost forgot, that you'll be able to invite people to play game directly from within Home and if both accept, the game will launch automatically if the games is install on your HDD or will prompt a message to insert the proper cd in the ps3. oh and all that is free, well almost. All that I said will be free, but you'll be able to buy some more furnitures or exclusives furniture in the PSN store. I suppose they will probably come in little packages at a little price but still you can enjoy Home with the basic furnitures. |
Interesting. A lot of games that were already released will be getting rumble support, I assume via system firmware updates:
Spoiler:
|
Anyone really happy about how the weekly update in the store turn out? it's been a month that we get a lot of stuff and demo ^^
I just tried the stuntman demo and as much as I like the game, god it's frustrating XD but not as much as the one on ps2 >.> oh and that full trailer of DMC4 was sweet! and really good thing about the rumble. I'm happy that it look simple to add rumble feature on already release game ^^ as for Lair I can understand a little why they are not including it, maybe because the whole game control with the sixaxis so they don't want the rumble to distract us? |
Is the dual shock 3 going to use some kind of special batteries? I can imagine recharging that damn thing every 2 hours.
BTW, I bought my Ps3 with Heavenly Sword yesterday (not that anyone cares anyways). It will be arriving in 4 weeks though :( I just hope that the people from customs don't replace it with bricks or something. I'm totally terrified about the shipping. |
Quote:
|
As much content we've been getting a lot of it is old news or minor things. It would have been nice to get some TGS stuff. Whether it be MGS4, White Knight, anything. A demo would have been better too. Like the one DMC4 demo has been going from convention to convention for over a year now, why no PSN release of it eh? Ah well, maybe when TGS really starts tomorrow, we'll get some up to date content for the next update.
|
Quote:
|
I agree with SlayerX, it would have been nice to have some actual TGS content. Very disappointing that the MGS4 TGS trailer didn't make it in the update, wasn't it supposed to hit the PSN ? Oh and that DMC4 trailer is the same one from GC, it's not even the one they showed at TGS.
|
The Game Show is not over yet, I guess they will add more stuff later or maybe even after the Game Show has finished. Did you check the Japanese Store? Maybe they added some additional stuff there.
Also, please no more MGS4 videos. It's always the same shit anyway. |
Hmm I dont know if this has been answered yet, but, will the new controller lose its tilt function because of its rumble function? Or did they just take out the rumble feature because of their fit with Immersion at that time?
|
it suppose to have both technology, so yes you'll still be able to use the sixaxis + having the rumble ^^
|
Yeah, the controller is now called Dual Shock 3 SIXAXIS, so it'll have both features.
It was also confirmed the rumble will be no different from Dual Shock 2. So what those sites are saying about "next-gen rumble" and it being suddenly better than 360's, I have no idea. Perhaps talking out of their asses with hyperbole. |
Maybe it having both the rumble and tilt feature makes it the "next-gen rumble" lol
|
All sites have to fuel the console war one way or another by aggressively wording everything it seems. But yeah, it's no next-gen rumble and it does have both technologies. It's going to be nice to have some weight in my hands again.
P.S. One cool thing about the DualShock 3 however is the ability to turn the rumble on and off on the controller itself instead of having to navigate through menues and stuff. Cause while I like rumble in my action games, I hate it in my RPGs and fighting games, so the easier the better ;) |
Wait... rumble features can be different? People actually notice this shit? This is getting pretty ridiculous.
Can we please go back to having two motors spin around each other so that people can stop bitching about mundane shit? PS3s is better! 360s is better! Jesus Christ shut the hell up. I mean, its great PS3 gets rumble back but like Qwarky said, it's just people spewing bullshit from their mouths. |
Nobody was really talking about that though. Qwarky and I were just commenting on how the press was making it out to some innovation in the field to 1up MS or something, which it turned out to be nothing like. Are you talking about the same thing?
|
Quote:
|
Lol, I'm with you on that one man. They blew the whole thing WAY out of proportion. The only difference that I've heard about with the DualShock 3 is that it has seperate motor control insteadof it being a unified control. Other then that, it's DualShock 2.
|
Game journalism is worthless. So is the rumble the same or not. Obviously it can't be, since it uses seperate motors.
I'd just call it the Axis Shock. |
I think that was supposed to be sarcasim because the original DualShock also used seperate motors if you look at one of thoes see through ones. It's just now games instead of using the left for strong vibrations and the right for light, the new one just simply controls the RPMs per each individual motor, instead of simple on/off like in the DS2.
But yeah, when it comes to anything other then quotes, journalism is useless. |
Did anyone check out the trailers for Monogotari and Little Big Planet? I checked them out earlier and they look pretty sick. No need to look around since I uploaded them for you :).
Little Big Planet+Shirokishi Monogotari TGS 2K7 |
Apparently the PSN update is up. So what's new on the network? I know the Jerhico Demo is up, reported by Joystiq. But what else is new? I'm at work right now so I can't find out for myself.

Same goes for KOF12. I heard some shit about that game. |
KoF XII was just announced at TGS and SNK pratically never has promo stuff for their games until they've gone gold usually. I was actually surprised that Metal Slug 7 was even at TGS.
But no MGS content eh? That sucks. What happened to thoes updates of sprites and other artwork we'd get from time to time on SF2TurboRemix? Last thing I saw was Balrog's stage. |
blah. SNK knows very damn well that we didn't want to see a rehashed KOF98. To see a lousy ass poster is what makes me irritated. We're already at the end of september. Capcom is another ball-busting company that don't know when they want to release a game to the states. We wont see SFHD2 for a while >.>..
As for the demos..I'll be sure to get NBA2K8. Looks fun but why does the b-ball demos have to be cavs and spurs... =/. The Jericho demo was kind of interesting. I went through my first play on it and it looks like an ok game. |

Well after some weeks of speculation and rumours SCEE just announced the 40GB PS3 and pricedrop starting at 299GBP and 349GBP for the 60GB that'll come into effect in the UK and Europe October 10th. The downside is that the 40GB unit doesn't have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles as well as only 2 USB ports instead of 4 and no multi-memory card slot:
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe - Virtual Press Office Quote:
I suppose this just means I'll need to get a 60gig unit as fast as possible. |
Can someone explain the logic of dropping the BC ability when it's done by software nowadays anyway?
Also does anyone know what thoes prices would be in USD or CAD? |
The prices are hard to convert, since they aren't simple conversions. There's always a premium when buying it elsewhere, but being Canadian I'm sure you know that.
Hopefully the 40 is 400 or 450 bucks or something. Instant (re)sold in that case, but I doubt it. 500, maybe? I dunno. I won't bother guessing, as we'll hear something shortly, I'm sure. Seconding the "arg why remove software BC now too", though. That just flat out doesn't make sense. Buying a second hand 20 confirmed? |
Sony had to screw up somewhere to keep their failure points up I suppose.
It really isn't that hard. Put in 80 gigs, 100% BC, wifi, media ports, 2 Duel Shock 3 controllers, some retarded Blu-ray movie throwaway, composite cables, component cables, an hdmi cable, the usual crap plus the system, and sell it for $400-$500. People will be willing to buy that. If that was out right now even I'd buy that if not just for keeping around for the eventual Team Ico game. |
so they are basically doing a core package like the 360 with the 40gb, which mean totally useless >.>(well maybe not as much)
|
Not really. To be as useless as the core, it would have to be without a hard drive and lack bluetooth.
This one isn't entirely useless. |
@Acer
They do have that for $550CAD. What's your point. (Well no Dual Shock 3 obviously, like it matters) As for the system. All the press have been saying that Sony should have made a system for gaming and not multimedia. Well here's the system, so the had better STFU now. Or else... |
How does taking out backwards compatibility factor into making it a better gaming machine? They still need Blu-ray for the games so disabling it from playing Blu-ray movies wouldn't save them much money at all. I heard they cut 2 USB ports. Holy fuck I didn't know USB cost that much. You can still access USB flash storage for multimedia purposes that way I suppose which is fine by me considering all flash cards besides SD are pretty worthless unless you're forced to use Sony's for the PSP. Cutting out wifi would just make it inconvenient and seriously even the DS has wifi (looking at you too 360 what is up with that?). 40 gb it's fine. Hell even 20 gb is fine as long as it has a harddrive. I don't know about you but I want to get my money's worth and a complete system. I'm not going to rebuy controllers just because they lack rumble so I'm just not going to buy the system until it's finally complete. By then it'll have those good 2008 games I hear so much about.
|
"Gotta take away that backwards compatibility now that we have over 65 PS3 titles available! That's almost as many as the THOUSANDS of titles available on PS2 right? So who would even want backwards compatibility anymore?"
|
I don't know ask Microsoft. They killed BC when the console only had 20 games, so they should know the logic.
@Acer Things arn't always as easy as people make them out to be. Sometimes by replacing 1 item it changes a feature. For example I'm sure that they didn't eliminate WiFi and 2 USB ports to make it cheaper. I'm sure what they did was go down to a simpler propriatary Motherboard that is $100 less and simply has 2 USB ports and no built on WiFi. Also the PS3's WiFi is shit anyway, you're better off without it. |
Quote:
I personally don't care about backward compatiblity much, but they shouldn't have removed it. 400$ PS3 in North America would've been great news, but this gives people something to complain about again. |
Quote:
|
What in the hell is sony thinking? Are they just on drugs or something or are they intentionally TRYING to lose customers
|
Quote:
|
So.. what the hell was the damn point of all that upscaling they added not too long ago if they just go and remove backwards compatibility?
Sounds like a nice waste of time, money, and energy. |
This is probably the only time I am glad I bought a console at launch and can just ignore all this ridiculous bullshit going on in the background. Who would have figured they would have got it best the first time around and then continuously fucked it up as they tried to "make it better"?
|
Quote:
The first thing they should axe is the price. I mean seriously. PS3 has no good games that justify buying the console. At least with the PS2 MGS2 was set to come out what...3 months after launch i think? |
Quote:
Quote:
|
Ah, my bad aardark...seems like it went by quicker than it seemed.
But I think the price drop was for Europe only because didn't Sony drop the 60 gig model to 500, discontinue it, then sell the 80 gig for 600 still? |
Anybody who runs PS2/1 games on their PS3 is an idiot to begin with. Every single game looks like ass thanks to forced deinterlacing, and the upscaling is terrible (the scaler of my JVC is superior). Practically everyone on Earth has a PSTwo anyway, so I don't see what the problem is.
The only benefit is potentially cleaner audio, since the PS3 has a more stable chassis, and an optical clock that wasn't manufactured by Radio Shack. |
Quote:
|
That and at least on my HDTV, PS2 games look a crap load better on the PS3 than they do on my PS2. Sure, I could keep my SDTV hooked up JUST FOR THE PS2, but that's unnecessary space taken up and is also highly inconvenient.
|
You still have to differentiate between fullHD and HDready. While I do believe that upscaling helps a fucking lot when you're lucky enough to own a fullHD TV, I don't think that I was like "wow" when I played my PS2 games with my PS3 on a HDready TV.
Quote:
|
Full HD is just BS marketing talk that Sony made up.
If you want to get technical, Full HD, which is 1080p, isn't even "Full" HD, which in reality is over 4000p. |
I remember when Sony hooked up a bunch of HD sets together and shot some sort of super HD video from a camera that was rigged to the top of a car and displayed them on those sets it gave everyone slight motion sickness because it looked so real except huge kinda like the first time you went to an IMAX theatre and looked down while some asshole played footage from some dude in a helicopter from a thousand feet up on it and you were all dude I hate heights, fuck, walking down these stairs isn't helping AT ALL but pretty much everyone agreed that it was pretty cool and rad anyway. =)
|
Right now the way how I see it, the PS3 is a good piece of technology. However, the company, Sony, needs to get it's act together in my opinion. Basically put, I think their marketing section sucks. :gonk:
|
So Sony is Extorting us Europeans with buy it now or you won't get one because we shit all over Europe.Of course this paves the way for the 80gb model but that will probably be priced at £400/around $800 with no god damn games knowing Sony. They are forcing my arm to get the reduced price PS3 now because they aren't selling any in the UK.
I was hoping to buy one in late January but the 40gb will probably be the only model avaliable eventually with no backwards compatibility and a dinky hardrive? So no buy! Seriously WTF is wrong with them. 60GB PS3 to be discontinued in UK - News at GameSpot |
Quote:
I really wouldn't be all that surprised if by January of next year Sony announces the return of PS2 BC in the 40GB models. The only reason the 40GB models don't feature BC is because the PS2 Graphic Synthesizer processor was removed and they still haven't finished the emulation code for the chip. Sounds like they are rushing to get a cheaper model out to the public for Christmas time and targeting PS2 owners with this model. It's interesting to note that the 40GB models supposedly can still play PS1 games since the PS1 hardware is still being used as the I/O processor for the PS3. |
I'm honestly considering buying the 40GB version. I don't care about BC, and I can always buy a new HDD if that's what I want.
(I get the feeling that this post just shows I haven't "gotten it" at all:( ) |

HEy guys. I don't know what else is supposed to be coming, but Everyday Shooter IS coming on this weeks update for about $10. Man I can't wait. Here;s a trailer for thoes unfamiliar with the title.
Gametrailers.com - Everyday Shooter (PSN) - Chain Reaction Gameplay HD Also announced is a new Gradius/R-type side-scrolling shooter. Visuals look like R-type, gameplay more like Gradius. Current release status is TBD. Gametrailers.com - Soldner-X - Trailer HD |
Man, I've never heard of Everyday Shooter, but that Lumines-type music interaction it has going on looks fantastic.
I'm also a fan of Jets N Guns, so Soldner X is a no-brainer for me. Now if they could just put out a Ratchet demo, this would be Perfect Update Weekstravaganza 2007. |
Ratchet & Clank demo will be released this Thursday. It was planned for October 4, but got delayed one week.
|
That's fucking teamwork! ^5
|
This is the same demo that was put on disk and shipped to GameStop stores, isn't it?
|
I think it's the same level, but tweaked and improved.
|
So the Ratchet & Clank demo is fucking tits. Too bad it's only like 5 minutes long :/.
The Groovitron and the free-fall/dodge-traffic part made up for the length, though. p.s. did i just say fucking tits |
The PSN demo of Ratchet is 16 times better than the disc version, if only in that in runs at near-60 FPS constantly, which is a beautiful thing.
Anyone downloaded Everyday Shooter? It's not too bad, considering one guy did everything for it. I paid for it just to give him his crazymadskillz prop. and yes, you did say fucking tits. :( |
How many levels are there to Everyday Shooter?
|
Quote:

It seemed longer than five minutes to me, but then I also didn't finish the Heavenly Sword demo in thirty seconds like some people said they did.
|
Ya know what, I think I was just having more fun than usual with the demo that it just seemed to be shorter than it really was. That or the booze.
I played through it again this morning and it seemed perfectly lengthy for a demo. I REALLY want to buy the game, but I also REALLY want to actually play through the other ones first...I'm all about platformers, but I have yet to play a single Ratchet & Clank game :(. Fucked up, I know. |
You can get them all for under $20 now. A used Ratchet & Clank goes for, I think $7.99, R&C: Going Commando for roughly $12.99, Up Your Arsenal for about $14.99, and you can find the fourth game, Deadlocked, new for $19.99 or used for probably $17.99.

Looks like the 40GB units will be touching down in the US and ready for sale October 30th:
Spoiler:
Seems like the original rumour of a Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray pack seems true given the partial listing title. Regardless of the 40GB unit, I'm hoping that within the next week or 2 I'll have my hands on a 60GB model after all the crap I've ponied up on eBay. :eagletear: |
Ah damn, I was hoping the 40GB model would come in at like $350 to match the $340 Japanese price.
|
$399 for the PS3 is an excellent deal, especially if you are looking to get into HDM. Along with Spider-Man 3, you also get 5 free Blu-ray discs with the mail-in offer.
There is also a huge B1G1 going on at almost every major retailer this week. |
So I've just bought the 60GB version. I got Ridge Racer, Motor Storm and Resistance. What else should I get? (Yeah, a game reviewer asking about what to buy. I get it, the irony is SCORCHING!)
I've downloaded LocoRoco Cocorecho, and it's rather soothing to watch all those things bounce around. I'm planning to get Warhawk too. |
For PSN games I love Super Stardust HD, Everyday Shooter and Tekken. Thoes games rock.
For retail games.I'd have to reccomend. WarHawk Ninja Gaiden Sigma FolkLore Virtua Fighter 5 Must rents are; Lair Heavenly Sword The Darkness |
Huh. So no one's brought it up yet? The 80GB PS3 system is now priced at $499, $100 cheaper.
What's this mean for the 60GB models that are still on shelves? |
It means that they will probably stay on the shelves unless individual retailers decide to slash their price in order to clear them off the shelves. You know, since Sony didn't really mention anything about that.
|
yeah I heard that the 40gb model will be price 399$us but I didn't know that they would lower the price of the 80gb too. I just saw that in Canada, bestbuy is selling the 80gb for 499$can I don't know if it's for a limited time or the new price cut...
|
eh, i hear the 40gb PS3 cant play ps1/ps2 games.
|
Yeah that's right. Guess it makes sense in Sony's upside down world.
Like Jacky boy sais. A PS3 for $400 and a PS2 for $130 is still less the the original $600 by $70. Just you don't get the upscaling, wireless controllers, built in memory cards, or the extra 40Gbs. Hell I wouldn't give a shit if I saved $70 if I lossed all of that. I suppose like NDP sais though. Something like 58% of people don't even know that the PS3 can play PS1/2 games. So I guess the lack of the BC feature won't really hurt them much with the mainstream. |
I thought the 40GB model could still play PS1 games, and it was only the PS2 BC that was removed?
Or am I wrong? |
For those aching to play GT5 Prologue, the demo is available on the Japanese PSN. Heh though it's all in Japanese. I just tried it out myself, pretty nice. There's a driver's seat view now (don't remember that being in GT4, then again I never really played it), and you can actually control acceleration and brakes using the right analog stick (heh, I seem to drive much better using it).
|
Wait, so its a demo of a demo, or is it the full prologue demo?
|
It's a demo, because it's free. Prologue itself is actually going to cost you a couple bucks when it comes out later this year. However I hear that these prologues tend to have a decent amount of content in them, making them worth while.

Since you quoted me on it Strife, lemme throw this out there regarding the 60 GB units.
GameStop is offering a pretty nice deal when you buy a 60GB PS3 new. Check your stores to see what it is. |
A lot of retailers here are just selling the 60Gb model for $450. And the 80Gb model for $500 with MotorStorm and LAIR(that's FutureShop, but other retailers have similar deals).
|
Things are way more crazy over here. They sell the 40 GB version for 399€, while the 60 GB version still costs 599€. This is so bizarre.
|
Quote:
I think I'm going to go ahead and get the 60GB from Wal*Mart given their special for the 60GB includes a free Blu-Ray remote as well as a free game from a list that includes Resistence, Motorstorm, Lair and Heavenly Sword to name a few. |
So I'm behind on the PS3 mod scene or more than likely the lack of one. Has a reasonable way to copy and play PS2 games off of the PS3 hard drive been developed yet?
|
Heck no man. There's been virtually no mods. Unless you count running Linux on the system. But seeing how Sony approves of that it's not really a mod.
Perhaps someone with a closer eye on the scene may know of something in the pipeline however. |
Well I finally got my 60gig unit on Monday which I've been playing around with these past 2 days and all in all I'm glad I dropped the cash.
Problem though: I can't get it to connect online. I'm no good at all this technical whatchamacallits and going by the "Easy" and "Automatic" setup yielded no success with just a "IP looking time out". I'm a Comcast high speed internet user and without a router and my modem in the other room I basically unplugged the ethernet cable between my PC and modem and then used a 25ft ethernet cable to connect the PS3 to the modem in the PC's place. So errr...any help would be greatly appreciated. :( |
you might have to reset the modem every time you switch between the pc and the ps3....
I would suggest you get router, or take your current cable modem back to comcast, and switch it for a cable modem/wireless router that they offer. |
I dont know if this helps but...when my friend came over with his ps3, we tried it online at first and it didn't work. It was all hooked up, but the problem was, my cable modem connects with a usb connection...so the usb connection was still connected to the computer, and that caused I guess..a confusion with where the internet should be directed to? As soon as I took out the usb connection from the PC, the internet worked on the ps3 :).
Hope thats what you're dealing with. |
Strife is right. The modem assigns an IP each time it is turned on. So if you change the item without resetting it's not going to assign an IP to the PS3.
So you have to unplug it for 2-5minutes and then plug the modem back in with the ethernet cable already inserted in the desired device. Only way around this is to get a router which allows you to have both hooked up at the same time with no switching. |
Every time I turn the PS3 on in my apartment, the wireless router has to reset itself. It's kinda weird cuz it affects the modem too. But I just give it a second and it works fine.
Does it on both wired and wireless connections. |
Quote:
I'll give it another try later and if it still doesn't work then I guess I'll look into getting a router and see if that helps. |
Hey, so rumors are going around about a new PS3 firmware 2.0 update that's supposedly going to be released soon.
It all started with the latest PSP 2.72 firmware update: Quote:
I'm a little skeptical about this because I know that if the PS3 is in sleep mode, then there is no network connection. But could a firmware update change this behavior? ANYWAYS. It looks like the 2.0 update may be coming very soon. In the comments of this ThreeSpeech blog post, it shows this - Quote:
Quote:
EDIT: AND WHERE THE HELL IS MY HOT SHOTS GOLF 5? I have been anticipating that game for the longest time... |
In-game XMB access would be about the greatest thing they could add at this point.
The 2.0 firmware is also supposed to mark another major cut in required system resources for the Playstation OS. Memory reservations in main memory will be cut in half and video memory by 3/4th of current. The OS will also not require one of the SPEs be reserved though the requirement that a game application be able to give up a SPE on request of the OS will still be required. This was mentioned a few months back so I don't know if they are still on track to introduce this in the 2.0 version, but these changes should eventually come along in a future update. |
That would be nice. Then developers can get back to memory hoaring instead of optimizing their games.
|
Well I managed to finally get my PS3 online last night thanks to a router a friend at work let me borrow, of course he only tells me today that it's actually broken and only connects 1 device after I asked why my PC wasn't getting online...:tpg:
Anyways as long as it works until I get my own router then I'm good especially with the Uncharted demo this Thursday. So all last night I basically pissed around setting up my PSN account and downloading various demos for the likes of Heavenly Sword, John Woo's Stranglehold and Ratchet & Clank. I just wish my local video store had more PS3 games instead of the 6 titles they have so then that way I wouldn't have to head out to the next town over to rent from Blockbuster. Has anyone seen the new PS3 commercials? Seems like there was 1 shown during every commercial break on FOX and during the Heroes reruns on G4. |
yeah, the new commercials look pretty cool, and yes, they did run at least 1 per commercial break during both the episodes of family guy tonight.

PS3 2.00 Firmware Tomorrow
Quote:
http://www.threespeech.com/blog/wp-c.../002-004.1.jpg What the hell is this picture? Is this the 'information board'? Is it basically like an RSS feed for Sony news or something? Oh yeah. Uncharted demo tomorrow. Everybody check it out and then buy that game. |
The PSP has RSS support, so I would imagine the PS3 would too.
As for 2.0, definately not what it could have been. And because I have a hacked PSP the remote play update is no use to me. What a drag... Uncharted demo, give me a HOO-RA!! |
Information board, LoL. Oh, you mean this.
NO GAMES. 11/10/07 NO GAMES. 11/14/07 NEW BLU-RAY MOVIE. 11/21/07 NO GAMES. 11/21/07 The XMB customization should be aight. At least I'll be able to see the damn icons on my wallpaper now. I am still waiting for my Blu-ray screen-capture function, as well as 1:85 stretch. |
Why is the remote play of no use? If you have the latest M-33 custom firmware with the 1.5 kernel, then it's the location free player that was removed - not the remote play feature.
And yeah, I can't fucking wait for that Uncharted demo. I have been anticipating that game for quite some time now. EDIT: Yeah, I can't see that Info Board being too...interesting, I guess. I'll just have to wait and see what it really does. |
The auto-on feature requires your PSP to have 3.75. I don't know what version M-33 is currently at however, but my PSP most definately is not 3.75 M-33 which is what matters.

I don't know why the movies simply don't have a tag on them like the games. Really, what's up with that?
|
Not exactly what I was referring to, but also, the new Spiderman blu-rays actually do have an image associated with them, rather than just the little blu-ray disc icon.
|
I've only had my ps3 for 2 weeks now, but I have a question... is there any way to see what your friends are playing online? I can see that they are online, but how do i know what they are playing so I can with them?
|
Quote:
And FYI, 2.0 hit a bit early and is available right now. |
Oh? From the people I've added , it says "Tekken Dark Resurrection". I thought it was that. As for 2.0 , nothing special.
|
It does say when someone is playing a PS3 game or downloading content, but that's it. It doesn't say anything when they're playing games off their HDD, PS2 games, or watching a movie.
|
I think it just plain signs you out when playing a PS2 game. :(
|
This could be cool. PS3 Theme Creator.
Granted, I have no artistic ability whatsoever, but hopefully other people will create some pretty unique and beautiful themes for all of us to use. Maybe they will start popping up on deviant art, or something. Quote:
AAAHHHHH UNCHARTED DEMO TODAY  :megaman: ^5  :edgarrock: |
@Forsety
You're right, it does sign you out when playing PS2 games. Or at least the PS3s with the PS2 hardware does because it switches the PS3 hardware off/standby. I'm not sure if the software emulation works the same way however. @BlueBomber I was hoping that you were gonna proove me wrong, but I was pretty sure that the auto-on was a 3.75 feature. It sucks to be right sometimes. UNCHARTED DEMO TODAY ^5  |
This theme creator is so my kind of thing. Well something to do with the machine while waiting for the games.
|
Damn. The PS Store's got so many people on it, I can't even get in. Is the Uncharted demo up and running?
Edit: Bah. They're doing maintenance. Bad day to do that, don'tcha think? Anyway, has anyone successfully used the PS3 as a media server using Windows XP? I downloaded a few different programs that all said they worked, but nothing has. I've heard Windows Media Player 11 will work, but I can't figure out how to do it. |
"SimpleCenter" works for me on the PS3. You might want to try that, I couldn't get anything else to work right.
|
Click the arrow tab under library in WMP11 and there should be a media sharing option. Check the "allow new hardware" box and you should be set.
While music and images work without a hitch. Video remains a problem for myself aswell. |
I feel kinda dumb now. Never noticed the "Media Sharing" option under Library. Thanks Slayer!
Does SimpleCenter stream videos pretty well? I doubt it's a feature I'd ever use, but still. |
Heh... we should have a thread for the ps3 themes made on GFF. (Or just the best themes out there)
|
Well when they start showing up on the net, feel free to do so. I would actually like that.
@SouthJag No problem. I know I spent some time trying to find that poorly placed feature. Everyone was talking about their problems with it and I couldn't find it at the time, lol. |
There's an article about creating custom themes on Engadget, but they link you to this guy's blog. He tells you how to do it, but I tried to run the compiler and it failed.
Hopefully someone'll get it to work and make an awesome theme. |
Of course I have the best idea for a theme ever. All icons replaced with squadron insignias from Ace Combat series.
Here comes the pose. |
Found this place with some decent looking themes:
PS3 Themes // Themes for the PlayStation 3 Have fun! |
There are also a few official themes on the Playstation network.
|
This is just bullshit, apparently dust voids your console's warrantly now. In Sony's eyes anyway. Now I gotta be even more anal about keeping my console clean (already got linen covering it, when not in operation obivously, to keep the cat hair out).
This is quite interesting Quote:
|
Quote:
|
PCs are a different beast because they're made to be opened and tinkered with. Unless you were silly enough to buy a premade machine. Consoles operate on unique pieces of hardware, and it's easier to void warranty.
I have trouble believing that this story was not embellished or exaggerated at any point along the way, though. |
Just a small question, Is the ps3 more "sensitive" to dust than the ps2?
I'm asking because in my room there is a weird dust problem... no idea where it comes, but it's always there. |
This sounds crazy, but some people even vacuum their houses.
|
@Skexis
Actually you are able to open the PS3's lid without voiding your warrenty, the void sticker is on the seal plate inside now, so keeping it clean is the customer's responsability. As for the dust voids the warrenty dispute itself, it's hard to know if Sony is right or wrong without seeing pictures of what the dispute is over. UPDATE! " Ive: I'm calling just to pretty much clarify the PS3's warranty, if there's any clause in the warranty that makes it so that if the PS3 is too dusty that the warranty is void. CSR: No. Ive: No? CSR: No. The only way that it, um, voided is if it was neglected, um, abused, dropped or anything like, modificated like if you opened it up, modification, if you didn't have your receipt, um, any power failures like mother nature or anything like that then that actually does void the warranty. Other than that any defective PS3s or anything like that is still, um, still under the warranty." Ive spoke to several CSRs, each of whom took a similar position until they read the account notes. Apparently, a tech determined that the fearsome dust constituted neglect and presented a threat to his health. To his credit, the CSR handled a ridiculous situation fairly well. Sony CSR: What? No! Dust Doesn't Void Your PS3 Warranty! |
Quote:
Meh, after a second thought I think it's like Skexis said, it's just exaggerated. And Slayer X, I'm quiet interested in what you are saying... do you know a site with a decent guide to open the ps3? (My googling skills are royally failing tonight) |
This is more then you need. You can go up to image step 6. Anything beyond that you risk damaging your system and voiding your warrenty.
Playstation 3 Disassembly Tutorial |
Oh noes! Nakedz ps3!!!
*blushes* Heh, just kidding... thanks! (Once a year I'll try to clean the poor thing) |
Um, did anyone else's PS3 get bricked after playing the Uncharted demo/Installing the 2.00 update? I did both earlier today and after trying to play Heavenly Sword a few minutes ago I was told the game data was corrupt and I would have to delete it. There was no Game Data so I reset the console only to see that the hard disk's file system is corrupt (=D) and whenever I try to restore it I am given the same error message over and over, so basically I am out of a PS3 at the moment.
I don't know what caused the error (2.00, Uncharted or Heavenly Sword, or just a random fuckup) but since I assume that all of you downloaded the 2.00 update that you be careful. |
I haven't had that problem. The only thing I've encountered is the Timeshift demo freezing my PS3 tot he point where I have to hard-reset it using the power button on the back. I've played the Uncharted demo several times without any problems.

PS3 Getting DivX Support
Quote:
Wow. I can FINALLY stream porn to my computer without some wacky programs. |
Yeah this is real good news. I had always hoped that either the PS3 or the 360 would get DivX support one day, making my life a lot easier. And today's the day... well sort of. Still have to wait for the update, heh heh ^^;
|
Quote:
(I know, that should have probably gone in the 360 thread, but it was sort of a comment about your comment, and I don't have a 360 so I feel weird going in those threads :(...) |
Yay, a few more standards and I'll spend more time on my ps3 than on my pc.
|
Quote:
To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number. That's fucking brilliant comedy, though |
Yeah, I just realized that DivX support would make Remote Play with the PSP about 100 times more awesome.
Wow, the possibilities. My entire porn collection, but on the go. |
You wanting to access your porn collection while having lunch at McDonalds, or while taking a break from studying at the university library? That's messed up dude. |
Wow they are really listening to their customers when it comes to media playback on the PS3. I wonder if they will take the next step and offer MKV container support like some standalone DVD players have been offering.
|
Pretty awesome news. I guess I can throw in "irregular converted" mp4's in there. Hey I thought divX also has .mkv's... No problem though. The real question is when =].
|
Quote:
I would never watch anything like that where anybody could ever see me (especially in public, let alone my living room where the PS3 and my 4 roommates usually are.) |
Have they figured out how to play 5.1 audio from .MP4 yet.
I know that the latest firmware supports multichannel audio, but only for .ts. But nobody care about that. |
Quote:
|
Heh, the ps3 gets better each day as a freaking amazing media center...
(Good stuff while we wait for lovely games) |
That's good to hear. I am pretty much content with everything the PS3 has to offer at this point, other than the lack of 5.1 and FLAC support.
|
Quote:
|
No he means so that the PS3 can access content on networked computers without needing any programs like WMP11.
|
Yeah that's what I meant.
Let me just clarify - with this rumored update, setting up WMP11 as a media server for the PS3 can be considered redundant and unnecessary because the PS3 will now have the ability to read shared network folders & files, providing direct access to the content? (I hope I worded that better :/) |
Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me too ^^
|
Yes, that is exactly what I mean.
Right now the PS3 only has limited file sharing protocols active in the form of Window Media Share which is also loaded with DRM. But it looks like Sony is slowly moving away from the DRM protection the PS3 was originally designed with which has opened the path to h.264 playback, unencrypted multichannel audio playback and now DivX/XviD. And of course using an open protocol like IP/TCP (which the PS3 already has for Internet access) for file sharing is looking to be a likely reality. The Playstation 3 SDKs already allow for this. Looks like it was just disabled on consumer machines most likely for DRM reasons. And actually if they just dump Windows Media Sharing altogether in favor of IP/TCP sharing they'll be able to cut the OS memory footprint even more. |
Oh hey - Playstation Universe has a whole page dedicated to user created PS3 Themes. You can upload your own themes and everything.
Spoiler:
|
some of those theme are really good, it just too bad that I don't have and HDTV >.< there's no 4:3 support for theme apparently XD
|
Well the Okami one has 4:3 support. You just lose the banner on the backdrop. Also they're all support 4:3 just that you may have to change the wallpaper to one that fits your screen, that's all.
|
yeah it's just the wallpaper I know XD
but for now I'm really enjoy the pixel them with the gray wave background ^^ |
See, it pays to make judgments in context. For thoes who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about thoes people who said that Sony were asses for not servicing "that" PS3 that was too dusty to repair.
Well here's the pictures, would you want to touch it? I sure as hell wouldn't and whoever treats their stuff like this deserves to lose their console. http://consumerist.com/assets/resour...ront-thumb.jpg http://consumerist.com/assets/resour...11/1-thumb.JPG http://consumerist.com/assets/resour...11/2-thumb.JPG Polls: Is This Playstation 3 Too Dusty To Be Repaired Under Warranty? |
Granted, dust doesn't really constitute a threat to someone's health, especially considering all the methods one could use to clear dust, but that amount of filth is pretty much considered negligent abuse by any electronics manufacturer.
I'd say that indirect abuse and laziness at its finest. |
Wow, looks like the user loves to play dirty.
(eww... bad joke, I know... kill me and end my suffering ) |
Hahaha, wow, yea I take back my comment then. That's clearly consumer's neglect, however I wouldn't classify it as "life threatening", but definitely not good. When I read the article I was under assumption that the collected dust was internally in the system, I didn't think the guy was so lazy as to not keep the outside of it clean.

Ohhh man, I don't want to see the look of his house.
A few days ago my Ps3 arrived. But I was soooo lucky that I got a defective one. Yep, my worst fear became true. It seems that the GPU is defective or something. If anyone knows something about this let me know: Spoiler:
I'm doing my best not to return the console, since the international shipping cost is very high. But if it's the gpu, i have no other choice but to return it. How are the odds? Really?! |
That looks like a dffective GPU to me.
|
Ouch, I know what you mean about international shipping... heh, sometimes it's better to buy a new product than return it.
|
Quote:
It's very strange all this. I've found only one video of a guy with the same problem. I didn't find any other ps3 with the same issue. |
Well that's just it. With such a decent cooling system within the PS3 a fried GPU is 90% likely to be manufacture caused rather then caused when in use. (hope that made sense) So it's probably not going to be very common or well documented.
This may do absolutely nothing, but see if you can update the firmware, therefore if it is software caused it may fix matters. However I'm still most certain that it's a faulty GPU. But it's worth a try no? |
Quote:
Anyways, too bad this is happening to you... I heard that the ps3 came very well and very few people have problems with it. In any case, Good luck! |
I'm 99% sure that the half-naked anime girl in the corner is creating the interference, but just in case it isn't, do you want to tell us how you are hooking it up to the TV.
It could actually be the HDMI bugging out. |
I tried HDMI, composite and component. I also updated to firmware 2.0
If I turn the ps3 on and leave it downloading demos, it doesn't freeze. I left it for 6 hours and worked great. But when I start messing around with the XMB or try to play ANY demo or game, the system freezes and starts to make all those pixel noise. Sometimes I can still hear the music and sound effects, but after a few minutes it completely freezes. I can play for 10 minutes before it freezes. There is no overheat at all and I don't have any elecricity problems in the house. I believe that there is definitely something wrong inside the machine since i tried everything. Or as Megalith said, it could just be a plastic figure doing the interference :tpg: This is a video from a guy who had the same problem: Click Anyways, I'm sending it tomorrow. |
I could theorize a couple things based off what you said, but nothing that's a quick or simple fix so unfortunately it does look like you're going to have to send it in.
|
So did anyone do that bullshit upgrade for the ps3 last night? It supposed to had fix a bug that made the ps3 function weird or something. I never notice anything but oh well. Here I was hoping they would add divX. Guess not.
|
Yeah I did, and last night was the first night that I did not get the white screen in Assassin's Creed. So it must have done something.
|
Now that you mentioned the white screen, This weird color glitch would show up after I finish playing a ps2/3 game and move onto the menu screen. It doesn't do it anymore then.
I asked this one question a long time ago but does anyone here get no sound in the menu after you play a ps2 game (cd-rom/blue colored disk). PS1 and ps2 games(only dvd-rom/silver colored disks) works fine and doesn't do anything weird to the ps3. |
Not that I've ever notices.
|
Oh ok. I think it wouldn't matter anyway because the only game that does that is Marvel vs Capcom 2. Maybe it's too old of a game.
|
I'll have to try that out and let you know then. I have the game, just stopped playing it because of its music mostly.
|
Just another news of how awesome the cell processor is:
BBC NEWS | Technology | PlayStation speeds password probe And this is starting to annoy me, looks like everyone is making wonders with this freaking processor - except - the game developers. Oh well, I guess they need some time... |
Is there anyone here with an HDMI receiver that can process MPCM.
Need someone to confirm that 5.1 AAC is possible, but only if your receiver decodes AAC internally or is MPCM capable through HDMI. |
Sorry, I only have a humble (but lovely) Onkyo 605... anyways, check this:
Making PS3 compatible MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) files, now with 5.1 AAC audio - PLAYSTATION®3 Media - PlayStation.com Forums |
The Onkyo 605 can process MPCM over HDMI. The unit can handle TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, after all.
I just read that guide, and it's absurd to go through all that just to get one trailer to play in 5.1. I'll just have to wait until Sony offers an update for transcoding AAC. |

Suggesting all PS3 discussion threads be closed until the system actually gets games.

I have some interesting news on the NO PS3 GAMES front. There is a rumor that a popular Square-Enix RPG franchise may be headed to the system in the future. It is unclear at this time if the series will return to its pre-suckiness days, or if it will be another disappointment, but at least there is a dim light at the end of the tunnel for now. Until then, sorry, no games.

No one's so retarded as to state something like that in all seriousness, right? |
Hmm... has anyone heard about this game?: IGN: Angel Love Online
|
No I haven't heard of it. But seeing as how the game can probably run on any PC made within the last decade, I'd just go get the PC version and forget about the PS3 one coming to the US.
UPDATE: Rock Band patch TODAY to enable the GH3 guitar to work with Rock Band. |
Oh come on, the idea is to make the ps3 do something beyond a fancy media center.
|
That must be why it can't play any of the videos stored on my computer that the 360 could play even before the DivX (+more) update.
|
Not enough love from you mister. Besides, stream the darn thing.
|
Hmm, I need your inputs people.... I'm going to grab a game for this christmas and I'm torn between two games:
Assassins Creed and Folklore.... So which do you think I should get :o |
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Your two suggestions are both really good games as well, but if you haven't played Uncharted or Ratchet and Clank yet, then those two rightfully should come first.
But strictly between those two? I'd say Folklore, but that's a pretty niche game. Macabre story line, extreme fantasy locales and kinda slow on the action, but a really solid game. Assassin's Creed's also really fun, if a little repetition doesn't bother you. |
Hi ps3 owners. I got a ps2 and it served me well. but last month my gf asked me what I wanted for xmas and I jokingly said "a ps3" and now I have it here staring at me. :P
But here in this small asia country of mine orginal blueray games cost at arm and a leg. (the console cost a 5 hectares of land :p) I never tought shed get one so I didnt bother to research on this amazing looking paperweight, and just found out it cant play "back-up" copies of ps2s that I have. ;P Can anyone give me a tip on how to "fix" this? :D |
There is currently no means of modding a PS3, so you're out of luck in that department.
|
Quote:
And... you don't want to put "bootlegged" games on your ps3 if you put it online. I guess all you can do is wait, or start exporting stuff... |
Ok then that fine with me, but how about downloadable free games or demos? I just read wikipedia that this thing has a harddrive and it can even browse the internets! ;P (my ps2 was just used the simple old fashioned way, insert the disc and play, this thing is like a pc!!!) sorry Im a real noob at this new hardware
|
Yeah, beyond the media center functionality you can download some demos, tons of trailers and some other stuff all for free. Full games cost some money and full videos will be a reality in the not-so-far future.
However, it needs tons of video codecs (most likely it will get those on the future) and don't expect much from the internet browser. The ps3 still has a loooong way to go... |
thanks comrade! one last question for everyone, could you recommend a playable game demo I should I download? Whats the best playable game demo released so far?

Fucking Sony. I hate them now. I just found out my 40gb model cant play ps2 games. I just bought a ps2 game a while ago and to my surprise it would play. This ps3 came from japan and all the manuass are in japanese which I cant read so I didnt know. All their ads a few months ago said it was backwards compatible and now they took it out just like that? I hate sony! I cant wait for a modchip to get out or an iso loader, Im not going to buy any sony product from now on, sheese ps3 games expensive. I shouldve gotten an xbox.
|
It is common knowledge that they removed backwards compatibility in the 40 gig model. This is something that has been discussed, at length, all over the internet, and has been discussed in this thread. It is not completely Sony's fault that you were misinformed.
|
Yeah, the box would clearly say "Playstation 2 format software titles do not perform on this system", but if you bought a Japanese system without really knowing what you're buying, it's pretty much your own bad.

lo. sorry I ranted. :P I was just pissed as I just bought an original metal gear solid 2 that doesnt play on the ps3 when I couldve gotten this the other way heh. I thought I could dispose the ps2 since the new one can do everything as advertised. I guess not.
*sigh* Im a poor gamer. |

Lol pwned, but yea I think you can play PS1 games on it. If I were you I'd trade it for a 20gb PS3 or if some one is dumb enough to give their 60gb for your 40gb model. Or just sell it and I'm sure you can buy a 20gb model in that price with a game or two. |
Wow. I haven't posted here in quite a while.
Anyways - Tomorrow we get firmware 2.10... ...AND THAT MEANS DIVX. Quote:

Profile 1.1 allows for advanced interactivity features (such as PIP).
I don't care about anything anymore other than screen capture function for videos and Blu-ray movies. |
Well besides in-game XMB which sounds like will happen eventually in the future since the lead Sony engineer made a comment about it being known as the most want feature, I hope for a fix in every firmware update that prevents the damn controller from turning off every time I enter PS2 emulation mode.
Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is a big deal though and a huge step for Blu-Ray to become the chosen standard of the two competing formats. |
I want a xmb screen capture feature, so when I make a PS3 theme I actually have a real preview to use.

Also, as far as I know most pirated video files aren't 'copyright protected' or larger than 700 MB or 1.36 GB, so I don't think the limit is a problem. Unless you want to play hi-def Blu-ray rips or something. |
Is there anyone that uses TVersity who can elaborate on how the hell to make it work in a more practical manner?
I noticed that when you delete items from your shared folders, the PS3 still thinks that it's there. Two trailers that I deleted last night are still there, and they shouldn't, since I had shut down my computer last night, meaning a restart of TVersity. I am trying to refresh my media library, but seems like it's taking forever, even though I only have a single shared folder with like, one media file. TVidiocy. EDIT: Nevermind, TVersity likes to show the "busy" icon even when it's done refreshing your media. |
Yeah, I myself always hated TVersity for never being able to keep up with my computer's library of resources. Therefore I've just stuck with WMP11's media hosting abilities. It may not be the best, I have no clue. All I know is that I'm done wasting my time on this crap and that it works.

Looks pretty sick. I only wish we can get something like this over here. So this means the 360 will get one as well.. In light of the ps3, it looks like all my ps2 games works very well and doesn't have that bug where it eliminates the picture and sound. Still, the controller turns off on its own. Nothing too serious though. |
Anyone buy the original WarHawk on PSN?
I can't believe they made that rubbish MP game for PS3 instead of a true sequel. Seeing the FMV brings back so many good memories. |
Does the White PS3 come with the White Dual Shock 3? Or just a White Sixaxis controller?
|
well I just checked playasia and they say that it's coming with a white sixaxis. I think for now ps3 will be sold with the sixaxis and when Sony will have released the dualshock3 worldwide they will consider it to bundle it up with the console.
|
Well I think everyone knows that they're going to phase out the SIXAXIS sooner or later. Everyone just wondering as to when this well happen and I don't think Inhert is too off with his theory. After the DS3 has been released worldwide they'll probably phase it out I would imagine. It's cheaper to produce 1 version of something rather then 2.
|
Just a nice heads-up:
IF ANYONE WANTS ASSASSIN'S CREED (PS3): It's only $28 over at Best Buy this week. ($37.99 sale price +$10 off any PS3 game coupon) The coupon's here, in case you want $10 off any other PS3 game, too. http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/251/bestbuy1lh6.jpg Enjoy! |
Also in Canada at least they had an Assassin's Creed & CoD4 double pack for the PS3 for like $40-50. Good luck finding it now though.
|
So has anyone ran into issues with the XMB locking up recently? I haven't had any in-game problems but I finally got to mess around with the functions of the PS3 over Christmas for the first time in a long time and it locked up on me twice. I'm positive this isn't heat related since the system fan was running at its lowest in both instances. The PS3 recognized both errors too as when I attempted to turn off the system to reboot it I got the three beep error code both times.
|
I've been using mine a lot lately too and I haven't had that problem at least yet. Though I'm sure it will be fixed in the next patch or two if enough people are experiancing the issue.
|
I was expecting a lot of ps3 games for Christmas but instead I got a nice little HDTV for my little room lol
it's just a 20'' but really i doN,t have room for a real big HDTV and just this one is alread FAR superior than my sdtv XD well now all I need is buy all the game that I wanted for Christmas... ; ; I so wanted to buy Assassin's creed for only 39.99$ at best buy but they have no more >.< I guess I'll wait a little more. for now, I'll replay all my games and demo in HDTV to see how pretty it is XD oh btw is there a clear way to know if your HDTV support the Full RGB? |
If your panel is an 8-bit panel it will only support Limited RGB. If it is a 10-bit or 14-bit panel it will support Full Range RGB. In reality any display will support this, however 8-bit panels will normally produce noticeable banding if you try and feed it a full range signal.
Either way this should not matter. The differences between limited and full basically change how you calibrate your display. A HDTV set to full range properly calibrated will look exactly the same as a HDTV set to limited properly calibrated. Most people who use their HDTV as a PC monitor will calibrate around a Full Range RGB signal since this is the standard output for PCs and people who use their HDTV for games and movies will use Limited Range and calibrate around that. |
I don't suppose theres a hack for the ps3 to play burned ps2 games is there.
I don't want to get rid of my modded one yet >_> |
There is no way to mod a PS3 as of this time.
|
yeah I know theres not mod but since the psp is so small and so full of possibilities I thought there would be some hacks for the ps3 as well because of the whole harddrive built into and stuff *_*
|
Quote:

PS3's upscaling is laughable, and results in an image that looks as if it was smeared with vaseline (no smoothing). Allowing my TV to upscale results in a better image, but the PS3's awful deinterlacing creates an image that is still unnaturally soft.
If the PS3 could output the original 480i signal, all would be well. |
The PS3 uses Nvidias per-pixel adaptive deinterlacing and scaling found in the latest PureVideo. I doubt there is a TV out there with better scaling and deinterlacing hardware, but maybe they are using some shader settings that don't look good to you and unfortunately there is only an on/off setting for it. Maybe one day they'll allow for more user control of the scaler like sharpness level during the inverse transformation.
|
I dont see anything wrong with the PS3's upscaling. I'm playing FFVIII on my PS3 right now and it looks great compared to it running on a ps1 or a ps2 on a HDTV.

I know that PS2/1 emulation on the 80GB model is laughable, but does Sony have any intention on improving it (firmware upgrades that allow more games to be played)? I'd buy a 60GB model, but I just don't trust buying it used. Finding it new won't be easy.

For example Ar Tonelico and Growlanser Generations never worked before the latest update, but now they're fine.
Also for thoes trying to argue whether Megalith is right or not it's useless. Megalith is pretty much a videophile / audio quality freak. Not that there's anything wrong with that but the more one knows the more things they notice. Myself personally, I think that 75% of PS2 games look like crap anyway so I don't really care. And all that I do play on it are 2D fighting games, so I wouldn't be able to tell you whether it's better or worse. But I'm sure the PS3 upscaling is fine for most who can't tell the difference. (I also have the 60Gb system, so there may be a difference compared to the 80Gb version, I don't know) |
I just noticed it now, when did we get this new visual thing when we play musics? Before, we had only two, the huge swirl which was like the ps3's XMB Background, and then the wave thing that changes colors, now we have one that shows us the moon, and the earth? It depends perhaps on the current time I guess since its night time here :o
-edit- Ah, Earth Visualization... came with 2.10.... meow~ |
The Earth Visualization is pretty awesome, now we only need a visual theme like the one in folding@home a.k.a. the best PS3 game there will ever be.
Well yeah okay we don't really need stuff like that, but it would be cool anyway. |
There are some visualization in the psp that would look good in HD.... I wonder why they wont 'port' those? :|

Can I use the LCD monitor for my PC as an HD monitor for my PS3? The monitor's native resolution is 1280x1024, so I imagine it should be able to handle 720p from the PS3. It is a 4:3 aspect ratio screen, so I assume I'll get a letterbox display with black borders.
Since gaming and Blu-Ray is all I would use HD TV for, I'm tempted to buy a widescreen monitor rather than an HD TV. Is that a sound decision? It can do double duty that way, saving my limited space. If this will work, what cables and such do I need to make it all work together? |
Look for a monitor with HDMI input. Or buy an HDTV and let it double as your monitor, using a VGA cable with your PC.
|
If you're looking at an LCD monitor with an HDMI input, it's gonna cost you arround 600$ - 700$. In that price you can get an HDTV or add a couple hundred dollars maybe, I think those Vizio TV's are pretty cheap. I hear that LCD monitors dont serve that well for using it as a TV as well, but it could be wrong so I'm not sure. Like russ said, buy an HDTV and you could use that as your PC monitor.
Heres one for 550$ Vizio Inc. - Products - VIZIO VW26L HDTV it's not 1080p but I dont know if you care about that or not, but yea Vizio is pretty cheap. |
Quote:
Although I hear there used to be a requirement of having HDCP on your monitor for that to work, but supposedly it was removed in later firmwares so you can hook it up to any monitor. But I haven't had experience with this myself so I'm just going by what I've heard others say. |
After a little research, it seems like my monitor doesn't support HDCP, so if Sony did not remove it I definitely need to buy a new monitor. It seems unlikely Sony would remove that anyway, because... it's apparently part of the HDMI specification, and the PS3 is sold as compliant with that. I feel like I should have a widescreen anyway, so I'll just go shopping once my wallet has taken some time to regenerate.
Thanks for the advice, it's going to come in handy on my search. I hope I can find something that does acceptable double-duty. The PS3 and the PC are the only sources of high resolution content I have, so it would make sense to me to integrate them while keeping my SD TV around for the old consoles. |
Most definately. Last thing a person wants on their new HDTV is a HUD burn-in of an old NES or SNES game. heh heh
|
Quote:
|
I didn't know burn-in was a phenomenon that was likely to occur on HDTV. I actually thought it was a characteristic of CRT screens.
|
It's a long term effect for CRTs. However with LCDs the play time of such stationary things is an hour before having to worry. Or at least this seems to be the common belief.
How far that is from statistical fact I'm sure is something that Megalith would know. However I do not dare to prove the myth right or wrong using my own set. So I stick to the 1 hour rule. Even though I'm usually pretty hard pressed to play any single old-school game for anything more then 40minutes so it's not usually something that I normally have to keep an eye on. |
has anyone's ps3 froze? I just got one and it froze like 5 times already, twice when i was trying to update motorstorm, twice on the xmb and once when i was playing the timeshift demo. My ps3 is in a pretty well ventilated place, theres a lot of room for it to breath and it happens any time, not just after long periods of use.
|
Yeah, I think one other person had their PS3 freeze a couple times on the XMB a couple pages back. I think it has to do with one of the recent updates.
Having played TimeShift myself perhaps your system was just trying to do you a favour ;) I myself however also had a problem playing motorstorm. What I had to do was go into where the game caches are stored and delete the older version of the game (not your save file). This caused the game to default back to V1.0 and then update from there which worked fine from that point. So give that a shot and see what happens. |
is it on game data utility? then i've already tried that, and this is my first time updating motorstorm so i can play online. it's the one that came with hte 80gb ps3, is there a difference between that and the retail version?
|
LCDs don't suffer from image burn-in, this is only an issue with Plasma screens (and even then its only a major issue with older Plasma screesn). LCDs can develop afterimages or what they call image persistence but the ghosting will disappear if you just shut off the screen for a bit or watch moving images for a while. You pretty much cannot do any permanent damage to a LCD screen with static images unless you leave some image on all the time for days straight to where the liquid crystal will form a memory. But again this takes days, not hours of use to produce. I've only seen this once and this was on an LCD TV we used at our work to display stock information. The boarders used in the stock display finally burned in after a few weeks of being left on continuously displaying that same template.
|
Even now that's not a serious issue with current plasma technology. I heard it's still possible, but you have to cooperate on destroying a perfectly fine and new HDTV...
|
Quote:
|
So it seems that LCD don't suffer from many issues is this correct?
|
Basically, yes. LCD screens are pretty resiliant to issues like that, they don't have real burn-in like CRTs and Plasmas and they don't have the colorwheel or bulb burnout problems of DLP. They also use a lot less energy and produce less heat than almost all of the alternatives.
Downsides are mainly ghosting with lower quality/higher refresh rate sets and being locked to a single native resolution (so they have to scale everything to the standard resolution instead of being able to change their resolution like CRTs, so some things may appear blurrier on them). Also there's occasionally dead pixels, but that's usually pretty minor. |
Quote:
I had to send it back. It had a defective GPU, so there was nothing I could do about it. The post of my problem is HERE |
oh, mine is nothing like that, the image just freezes while audio plays normally, and you can't do anything with the controller, so the only choice is to turn off the system. I'm not sure if it's that big of a problem, but if it happens more often then I think I'd be returning my ps3.

The only error I ever got so far from my PS3 is when I loaded my game of Assassins Creed is that it suddenly showed me the "Your game cannot be loaded, your disc might be dirty" screen. :o

I prefer Plasma over LCD for both movies and gaming since it looks better, but I just use my LCD for my games. |
My next TV will definitely be a 1080p plasma. At the end of the day, it's really all about black levels, and plasma sets generally offer the best.
Alternatively, there's LCOS, which is what I own now. Price-to-size ratio, pixel fill, commendable scaling and proper deinterlacing (on my model, anyway) are just some of the benefits. Black level is more than acceptable, but like most current technologies, it's walking the line between crush and greyish blacks. I wish they would have spent a little more time with flat-screen 16x9 CRTs. With a little better engineering, they probably could have remedied the whole "curved corners" problem (inability of the gun to reach extreme edges) with most sets...especially on Samsungs...but that's probably because Samsung celebrates the usage of junk parts. As for LCD, I had a particular love for my Sony KDL-V2500 since it allowed me to physically place a center channel speaker in the proper spot (tweeters aligned with L/R monitors), as the LCD was light enough to sit on top of it...but I couldn't imagine watching something like Batman Begins or playing The Darkness with one. |
Sony has stopped making Plasma TV's right? I'm thinking of getting a plasma TV maybe next year to play games on. Something arround 36" inches maybe, but now is 1080p even worth the extra money it if it's a 36" TV? I read on another forum that it's only worth getting a 1080p TV if it's a really big TV.
|
It all deends on the person.
I myself usually can't see any noticable difference between 1080P and 720P until 40" + TVs. I don't discount the fact that it's there, it just doesn't make a big enough difference for me until I get towards sets that are larger then that. Technically anyone can justify anything, but I most certainly can't justify 1080P on anything less then a 40" TV, because personally it's just a waste of money. I have a 37" Sharp LCD TV and with the excellent black levels, and 4ms refresh rate there's absolutely nothing that I can complain about. Seriously, I had an HD CRT(native 1080i) before that and the black levels on my LCD look just as good. |
Quote:
And Dagobert as far as I remember Sony dropped plasma technology several years ago, they kinda bet everything they had on LCDs and other technologies (Recently they dropped their rear projection line too... it was goooood :(). Now they are starting with OLED technology but this stuff is in diapers. (11'' almost $2k)... Oh and a burn-in image = spoiled set, what you are getting is other stuff. |
I guess this is a good place to ask this.
I don't have a high def T.v or any of that yet. So far, I have a small discolored tv that I should replace with a much better one. So my question, can anyone point me to a Hi-def tv in the 600/900 dollar range that would be best used for video games? I've just started to play online using my PS3, my username is twistedchemical for those who want to play me online. |
Check here: Display Devices - AVS Forum , no better place on the interwebs for this stuff.

So I tried watching some .avi files today, I haven't tried it since the firmware update. So a lot of the videos did not work, which was media connects fault. So I read on gizmondo I think it was that Windows Media Player 11 works better than media connect, which is true and a lot of the files are playable on the PS3.
All my episodes of Chuck play fine, same with Devil May Cry the anime, The Big Bang Theory but for some reason some of the episodes of Black Lagoon wont play. The ones that dont play are also a different resolution than the ones that do play. So I read in the comments of that gizmondo site that if the video's resolution is divisable by 16 or some shit that it will play, and if not then it wont play. I also read that some of the files that do not play will play if it's burned on a cd or DVD. Any one tried burning any video files on a cd that doesn't play when streaming from windows media player, and does it play it or not? I dont have any blank cd's or dvd's at the moment so I can't really test it out to see if it works. |
Some files that have Xvid/DivX format will work (sometimes it wont since I just added a supposedly Xvid movie file and it said "Unsupported Data"). I just added Afk's Clannad WS episode 9 for the helluva it without conversion. Looks perfect (fills up the whole screen like some blueray hd version but looks a little fuzzy since it isn't really HD). What I'm hoping for is that they fix the little bugs with divX and have .mkv compatability on the next update. Most fansubbers these days stick with that and ignore mp4 when that works perfect on the ps3. Check Gundam 00 (subbed by Anonymous) for example. They did it under mp4 format for episode 1-2 and I haven't seen anymore =/. At least their's ACD Elite's One Piece to enjoy ;p

When ever I connect my PSP to my PS3 to register it for the remote play thing, turn my ps3 off and my psp, but when I put my computer on my PS3 turns on as well. Does happen any one else or know why it happens? It doesn't happen after that, only when I register the psp with the ps3.
|
ok, so i returned my ps3 because it froze 3 times on the xmb in 5 minutes after turning it on. I got my new one now and when i tried updating motorstorm, it was going well, I made it to the 50% mark then my ps3 froze. How long does the motorstorm update generally take? My ps3 was downloading the update for about an hour and a half.
After it froze i did the force shutdown thing, and i try out the browser to see if it'll freeze on me like my last ps3 and it does. is freezing a common problem? so far, this new ps3 has only frozen while online. just so you know, my ps3 has plenty of room to breath. |
Sounds like you're getting stuck with a bad batch or something. I've had my PS3 since day 1 and it's never acted up as much as the ones you've had. Come to think of it, it's never acted up at all.
I'd take it back to wherever you bought it, and if you can take the credit to another store and get a different one, do that. Edit: Off-topic by a good bit, but while I was editing my signature I figured I should mention that both Soul Calibur IV and, more importantly, Metal Gaer Solid 4 are available for pre-order at GameStop. SC4's release date escapes me, but MGS4's is June 18th. |
espressivo, try turning off the Information Board. I was also getting some lock-ups and going on the advice I found elsewhere, turning that off seems to have resolved my lock-up issues.
|
i've already done that, i also disabled media server. it's only happened twice so far with this new ps3, and i'm really hoping it doesnt happen again. I'd use a wired connection since it'll probably help speed up the download but my ps3 is waay too far from my router.
|
Has anybody encountered any jumpy framerates and audio skips with Ninja Gaiden Sigma? I am surprised that I am getting any of this...I'm under the suspicion that it might have something to do with the HD install.
|
You would be right. I had the same issues but deleting the HDD cache/install and just playing the game from the disc worked fine. I tried to reinstall a few times but it happened *every* time so yeah. The load times aren't that bad anyway, certainly not bad enough to warrant suffering those issues in lieu of them.
|
Quote:
|
Not quite yet. They only put the game up a few days ago, so any pre-order stuff that might come is still being kept secret. So far there's only one SKU available for reservation as well, so no collector's editions just yet.
But I'll let you know. |
Surely those are placeholder dates?
Gamestop has SCIV listed for June, but I thought that was slated for Spring '08. |
Quote:
|
Mm, I dunno. Our placeholder dates tend to be dated as something like 06/01. 06/18 is awfully specific, and it does fit the 2nd Quarter time frame. Not to mention that June would be a perfect time to release it; a month before NCAA Football 2009 and two months before Madden '09. June's also a pretty dry month for games, so that'd mean no competition (as if there'd be any regardless) to steal away sales.
|
It's also a Wednesday, a day that's not the most common release date in the world.
MGS's 1, 2, and 3 all have had late in the year release dates. (Sept/Oct for the first game, November for the second, and Nov/Dec for the third). Japanese fiscal years also start in April, so Q2 2008 as stated here would push it into the July-September range. Which makes a tad bit more sense. Even if it's a yankee fiscal year, June seems off, since Q2 ends in March. If it's talking just a general "second quarter of the calendar year", that date seems like a placeholder as it's just a week and a half before the quarter ends. So yeah, seems like a placeholder to me. |
Pwned.
|
Wow, it's like you totally ignored the links that he provided as reference to the standard fiscal years used in each country.
Either way, it's not like anyone in their right mind would preorder games that are that far out, so who cares what date Pawnstop has in their computers? |
I'm starting to wonder if we need a tag like [clickmeyoufuckingidiot] or something that makes all URLs contained within to be green, size 50 font with blink and bold.
It would, at the very least, help the ever so knowledgeable SouthJag here avoid a bit of embarrassment. Jesus Christ, no wonder everyone hates GS employees. |
Eh, at least make the link colors visible. I should probably change that in my Firefox, huh? Oh well.
|
@ The Dutchman: Even though your logic is correct based on fiscal dates by region I'm pretty sure that when game companies give QX numbers it's by calendar year, and as I think back on release date information for games in the past I'm fairly sure that's the case. Hell even you had to do research to find fiscal dates which your average joe isn't aware of. Quarters by calendar just makes sense.
|
To which I have already replied using other criteria that I believe show that it's somewhat fishy. Anyway you look at it, 6/18 seems a tad arbitrary.

I have a few questions about the ps3.
is it normal that it takes a little while to shut down? And I understand that the preinstalled software and whatnot should take quite a bit of space from the harddrive but to call it the 80gb version only to find that you have 64 or so gb free to do as you please with is bullcrap. I know this is normal for computers and the ps3 itself is close to a computer but come on ><! |
Still nowhere near as bad as the 360's HDD which is "20" Gigs where in fact you only have access to 12 Gigs. (well worse in lost space the PS3 is, but when you only have 20 to begin with it makes it seem a lot worse)
At least in the end you can always upgrade to any larger cheap brand HDD you choose in the future, so it's not all bad. And yes, it takes about 10 seconds or so after the light starts blinking to shutdown, so no worries. |
Quote:
|
Wait, wait.
"There's technically less included mandatory software on the Microsoft console, but it's worse for them because the hard drive is smaller!" What about the 120 option, then? The percentage of space lost to the included content is lesser, then. If you want to do a proper, uhh....comparison of this, compare the 20 gig models of each. I'd be surprised if it wasn't frighteningly similar. Stop turning your thread into such a big joke, guys. Please? Edit: Also that whole binary versus decimal measurement thing has been done for bazillions of years at this point, that's not a surprising issue anymore to anyone, is it? |
I am considering getting PS3. People keep telling me to get 80GB, what's wrong with 40GB?
|
Probably the biggest thing would be the disclusion of backwards capatibility for PS2 games. But if you don't mind that, then go for it.

I have another question @_@
I plugged in my 80gb usb harddrive into the ps3. It's partitioned into two 40gb halfs but its not detecting the master first half. It only detects the slave second. Why is that o-0? |
In the 40GB. You don't get these features;
Cons - You can't open the Card Slot hatch - Two USB Ports (you'd need an additional USB adaptor that will feed more controllers and the like) - You would need a Card Reader USB adaptor to read your SD, Flash or Memory Stick cards Pros - Will play PSOne games (stated in Future's PlayStation Magazine) - Comes with Motorstorm (which's kinda good in a way, though I'm really not into these sports games) Cons - Will not play PS2 games I'd say the 80GB's better |

Is there any reason as to why Sony keeps releasing different versions of the PS3 with different sized hard drives? Since the drive is removable, you'd figure that they'd just have one single 20GB version. Although I heard that they were losing tons of money off of that.
Is it just a clever way of ripping people off, since the cost to Sony between a 40GB drive and a 80GB drive is supposedly moot? |
I would let that to Cetra (Looks like she/he/it knows this stuff)... but if I had to guess, I would say that they want to confuse the hell out of consumers.
Or maybe to give an easy way to recognize the different versions and -at the same time- "hide" the most relevant differences among them. |
Quote:
The 40gb model -- - Does not play PS2 games - Does not have any card readers - Comes with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray - Has two USB ports The 80gb model -- - Plays PS2 games - Has SD, Pro Duo and Compact Flash card slots available - Has 4 USB ports - Comes with MotorStorm Both models -- - Play PS1 games - Have built-in wireless network adapters (wired/wireless connections are user preference) - Play Blu-Ray discs, obviously. Some people don't know. - Have a single wireless controller w/charge cable. Again, the more you know~ So there you have it. If you've already got a PS2 then don't spend the extra $100, since that'd be a waste. If you don't, you've two options: go get a used PS2 from somewhere like GameStop for $80 and still save $20, or get the 80gb PS3. Preferably, if you can still find a 60gb model, buy that one. It's still $500 like the 80gb model, but if you can find one, get that one, since the backwards compatibility is different between the 60gb and the 80gb (hardware vs. software emulation, respectively) models. If you find a 60gb model at GameStop, you can pick your choice of one out of six games to get for free, the newest game being Heavenly Sword. I think that promotion's still running, anyway. |
They were losing a bit more money on the 20 Gig model mostly because by having such drastically different systems, one which uses outdated HDDs (40Gigs is the industry standard low) the effort just wasn't worth the payoff. Especially after considering how few of the 20 Gigs were produced, and then a smaller number of them actually sold.
But yeah, at this point the HDD differences are just there to determine the different models more then anything. |
Oh yeah, I mean't that the 80GB has Motorstorm and the 40GB comes with Spider-Man 3. So all in all what you get from both versions kimchi. To rephrase it
40GB - $399 <== If you want extra features - this model wouldn't be your style. Cons - You cannot open the Card Slot hatch - You need to purchase an USB Card adaptor (if you want such features) - Only 2 USB ports - PS2 Games not playable (you must get them from the PS Network) - An additional USB adaptor is required to play such games as; Rock Band Guitar Hero III The Eye of Judgement Pros - Comes with Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray - Wi-fi networking available (same with 80GB) --- 80GB - $499 <== If you want more out of PS3 Pros - Comes with Motorstorm Blue-Ray game - Card Slot hatch can be opened to fit SD, Flash and Memory Stick cards - 4 USB ports Cons - PS2 Games [Limited] Quote:
Though Kimchi. Whatever model you pick is up to you. |
Hell, I am getting "best" (meaning it has most feature) with extra 100 dollars. I will go with it, and its not like I am paying for this.

Hey guys. Perhaps this is more appropriate news for the media forum, but it seems that Warner has just decided to drop HD-DVD support, and release in DVD and Blu-ray exclusively. This is a huge blow, and will probably decide the outcome of the HDM war.
Just another good reason to own a PS3 and be confident in the investment. |
This has been speculated as being a serious possibility over the past few weeks, and I am excited that it has come to be. With rumours circulating that Universal will soon {possibly as soon as CES} announce that it is going to support both formats, hd-dvd will not be able to last much longer.
|
I was thinking of buying a hard drive for my PS3, but I'm not sure if I should get an external one or those 2.5 inch ones. I have the 60gb model, and I have about 23gb of free space which I guess wont be enough in the future with games like Devil May Cry where you have to install 5gb's of data on your PS3. Any suggestions on which one would be better?
|
If you get an internal one, make sure it is not a 7200 rpm drive. They run hotter than the 5400 rpm drives, which is what you should be looking to get if you go the internal route.
|
If there was any doubt about how big this is:
The party for HD DVD is over, literally | Tech news blog - CNET News.com http://wesleytech.com/ces-hd-dvd-eve...ouncement/483/ The HI Def war is over, now the war against DVD and other consoles begins... this could be an interesting year for Sony. |
Assuming that HD-DVD really does tank, I'll be very sad to see it go. The technology was definitely solid, and it would have been interesting to see what it might have evolved into.
Other than seeing shelves of blue cases, I don't really have a problem with Blu-ray taking over DVD's spot, but it really does need a lot of work when it comes with elaborate menu trees and interactivity. I couldn't imagine something like Bourne Supremacy on Blu-ray right now, although I'm sure that the new profile makes it all possible. The HD-DVD group did make a lot of stupid mistakes though, like pushing combo discs, rarely initiating any kind of sales, thin advertising, etc. I'm just interested to see what Paramount does now, since a lot of money was involved when they agreed to be HD-DVD exclusive. |
I'll just repeat some stuff I read earlier, but basically several so-called-experts claim that this is it. (I would put the sauce, but AVS and pretty much any other relevant A/V forum is impossible to check right now)
Anyways, if this is really IT... let's hope blue ray will turn as a fine format and proper match for the DVD. (Because this new war looks very very long) And in my opinion, both formats had everything to make a fine predecessor, but we all knew/wanted/needed only 1 format. |
Quote:
Anyways, I also read that Paramounts HD-DVD exclusive contract ends in 2009, so I wonder what will happen then. |
Paramount's contract has an exit clause. There are rumors now that they are going to announce a break-away at CES as well now. This is looking like the end of HD-DVD for sure. Hopefully now HDM can finally focus on gaining market from DVD.
|
That's really going to suck for all thoes people who invested in HD-DVD though.
I'm pretty sure that if the 360 had an HD-DVD drive in it from launch that the format war would have totally gone in the other direction. Guess Sony were keeping all the PS3 games locked away until consumers won them the format war. Well we did our part. Now where's Shadow of the Colossus 2? |
Shadow of the colossus really felt like a one time game. If the the Ico team does work on a another game it's more possible that there would be an Ico 2 with the kid being a little older but even then I think they would just create a completely new game that would tie in the story between ico and shadow of the colossus.
Whatever they decided to do I know it'll be must-have. And blue ray now controlling 70% of the market really does seem like a defeat for the hd-dvd player owners the only good part about this is if the hd-dvd really does throw in the tower, we'll be seeing plenty of promotions so that they can get rid of all the extra players and dvd's that they have but then after that whats left? :/ |
Ooh, I didnt know that Uncharted: Drakes Fortune demo has vibration support :o Nice!
Wait, I just got folklore and it has vibration support too :o I wonder when Tekken Dark Resurrection will have vibration support? And Assassins Creed :o |
Quote:
80GB though, however, suggests that only some PS2 games you can play directly. As it's still limited. |
you clearly don't know what you're talking about zeta >.> because there's NO ps2 game in the ps store. the games that are in the ps store are either ps1 games that you can play on psp and ps3 or arcade games, like the xbox live arcades... beside that you must have a 60gb or 80gb version to play ps2 games on ps3.
|
I think what zeta is trying to say is that it only plays the PS1 games that are downloaded from the PS store. I'm not sure if thats true or not, I just think the 40gb version is stupid.
Does Sony even work on getting more PS2 games compatible with the 80GB model or are they just bullshitting and just made released an update once thats it? Doesn't matter to me, I got the 60gb but I'm just wondering since the 60gb models aren't being made and who knows if I ever need buy an 80gb model. I also bought a blu-ray movie today, and it's the first time I was watching a blu-ray movie. Damn the quality is great, but damn the price. |
I think we're all safe with the 60gb model :o
Hmmm.... I've been thinking.... I would like for Sony to add the option to show the date and time (or just the time itself) when we go to the PS Menu anytime. Just like the screen we get when we push the Home button on the PSP. We get a date and time... And maybe even have a clock fixed in the main XMB menu... Just my two cents... |
Quote:
Secondly, the 40 gig PS3 can play any PSX games, whether they are on disc or downloaded from the store. The 40 gig PS3 has the necessary hardware to make that happen. Third, according to the several members here who have the 80 gig models, the software backwards compatibility is pretty solid, with a very large percentage of games supported, so if you simply cannot locate a 60 gig, it wouldn't be the end of the world to get an 80 gig. Again, according to the several members here with that model. |
Hey, I only followed what's been said in the official PlayStation magazine and in the official PlayStation site. And what I said is true, just look up wikipedia.
|
Where on the official PlayStation site or Wikipedia does it say that you can download PS2 games? Quote or give links.
|
K, to give you the gist;
here's a list that Wikipedia compiled History of PS3 models 20GB - Yes 40GB - No 60GB - Yes 80GB - Yes (Software Emulation, which Future's PlayStation magazine calls it "Limited") |
I could have sworn that I was playing TR: Anniversary on my 20GB the other day.
|
I'm not sure what you're trying to get at, but here's the facts.
-40Gb PS3 has no PS2 software emulation. So whether you could download PS2 games or not (which you can't as of now) there is no emulation software on the system to run them at this time. -80Gb PS3 has NO hardware emulation and only has 100% software emulation. Therefore no Emotion Engine, no nothing and can still play 95% of PS2 games. -60/20Gb PS3s HAVE PS2 hardware within and can play 98+% of PS2 games. |
Well, I heard a while back that you could download PS2 games (emulated) off of the PSN network.
|
Dude. Why won't you listen to us? This is the last time I am saying this.
I have had my PS3 since day 1 and as of this date there are still no PS2 games on the PSN that you can download and play. And I'm including ALL region's PSNs. There are no such things. I know that Sony have said in the past that they'd like to make PS2 games downloadable via PSN. But considering all the work ahead of them with HOME. No such developments on downloadable PS2 games will likely be made within the next year. |
Zeta26, I'm sorry to have to say this, but you are a fucking retard.
There is no way to download a Playstation 2 game onto a PS3 to play. If you have the 20GB, 60GB or 80GB models, you can insert a Playstation 2 format disc and play, but you cannot download any PS2 game onto a PS3. Now please, for the love of God, stop posting about it. |
Anyways. I was think of this question too, like what Kimichi had, seeing as I got $200 (bonus) and another $100 (December's check). As I'm just about close to getting a 40GB, but yet am $200 away from the 80GB.
|
Then just wait another month or two and get the 80gb version.
|
I know that it's a loosely based reason to post this here. However unless someone wants to create an "HD-DVD VS Blu-Ray" thread I'm posting this here. (yes, I'm that lazy)
Quote:
However I feel that now that the power has been shifted influentually in one competator's direction that the market will support that said format out of sheer want for a single standard, and not so much for actual format superiority. (fortunately the winning format is the better one in my opinion) |
Quote:
But anyways, there was a blu-ray vs. hd-dvd thread in media centre but the topic creator was an hd-dvd fanboy to the extreme and ended up closing the thread when a few people expressed support for blu-ray. |
God damn it. Ah well thanks for pointing that out. It makes more sense now. I understood what it was saying, I just thought they said it wrong.
8 hours of class and 5 hours at work can start to get to you after a while. |
Back when I was running a shitty forum (cause the owner was a tranny and was nutting over the Wii which he still doesn not own), there were loads of people saying blu-ray would fail as soon as it would come out and dragging the PS3 along with it. I seriously wish that forum was still up so I could post all these articles about the PS3 doing better than HD-DVD.
They should bring the Skype feature to the PS3 like they did with the PSP. I would actually like them to include AIM on the PS3. |
I hardly see that stuff NOT coming for the ps3 sometime in the future... on the other side I would kill for a decent mail client (POP3 or whatever) integrated on the PS3.
|
Whats the attachment file size limit when sending a message in the PS3? I tried sending a picture but it was too big to send. It'd be nice if you could attach videos or multiple images as well.
Also, I put up an add on craigslist to trade or sell my copy of assassins creed, some one wants to trade their copy of Unreal Tournament for the PS3 for my assassins creed and another person wants to offer 45$ for it. Is Unreal Tournament any good? Edit: I got Unreal Tournament 3 and wow, the single player sucks. Online is kinda fun but I know it will get boring after a while. So I'm gonna have to trade this one as well, I dont know what to trade this one for. Warhawk seems better but I dont really know, I'm looking more for a single player game thats gonna last a while. |
Cooooool my mom got me a 60 GB PS3..didn't think she would ever find one at this point. She said she got it from Sam's Club online bundled with Motor Storm and I thought "oh AWESOME" until I went and checked her account status and saw that she paid damn near $600 for it. :gonk:
Now I feel guilty because the whole point of not getting one before was the price. Blargggh well I am still happy, though. I'm going to be cleaning the house and feeding the dogs for a long time to make up for it. I like to think it's worth it, though. Once I find a place to set it up I need to think about some games I want to get, one of them being Uncharted. I think I'm mostly just worried about TV issues..or future TV issues. I don't have HDTV and feel like I'm going to have a rough time picking out the best TV to use with all my systems. |
TV shopping isn't all that hard. From my experiance the quality is split up by price ranges. In other words all $800 HDTV are about the same quality (which is better then crap but not great). While $1200 is quality mid-range HD. And your $2000+ is your high quality sets with all the bells and whistles (and where it's the easiest to get ripped off).
I'm sure that someone like Megalith would have a whole nother take on it, but I'm not a videophile/TV tech expert like him. Also unless you going to be getting a 40" + set, 1080P isn't really a big deal. But more details on this stuff can be given to you when you get to shopping for a new set. Till then enjoy your new game box ^^ BULLITIN We PS3 owners need to make the desire for a PSN tag spot in our profiles known to the moderators. Seriously, the Wii got this feature long before which is pratically useless since you need a new code per an individual game. |
Quote:
|
I'm looking for a smaller TV, one around the same size as what I have now. So I think I'm looking for a 26" or so. Bigger wouldn't fit in my media center to begin with. After that I guess is just getting the best one of those that I can for all my systems without having it be entirely too expensive. My head is already hurting just thinking about this >.<
|
It looks like HD_DVD has seriously lost now. Universal has just announced that they're no longer remaining HD-DVD exclusive. I'll let the story do the talking...
Quote:
What do you guys think? Game over, or can HD-DVD still come back? @kupomog Awesome new avatar. I love KoF, nice to see another supporter. Kof XI RULES!!!!! |
No, none of that HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray vs BETAMAX rubbish in here please. They have nothing to do with video games. :cmb: There's a bunch of threads over in the Media Centre.
|
Meh, meh meh meh.
@kupomog: I don't know about good models at that size, but 1 thing is certain: 1080p is pretty much useless on "small" screens (Don't bother with it... and I'm not even sure if there is that option for those sets) Edit: Meh meh meh, |
I believe that HD resolution is important at any practical size (20" >). If you were to get a small screen, I'd assume that you would be sitting close enough to notice the difference between 720 and 1080 res. But this is just a purist's opinion.
And TV shopping will definitely drive you up a wall. I had to return my old Sony a couple of times since I was on an OCD trip and couldn't accept dead pixels. My best advice is to go to the store and hook some of your personal content up and see if you like how it looks. If you try to do too much research online, you'll never buy anything, because everything, and I mean everything, has some kind of problem. |
Quote:
However, I still consider that 1080 at that size is not really "useful", BUT if he intends to use it as a pc monitor (distance and stuff), well... everything changes. |
For anyone who has Super Stardust: As soon as your start your game, it's going to ask you to upgrade to a newer version with new updates and features INCLUDING customizing your own music (pretty much streamed not setting your own stage music). All the excitement had me going further into the game and still in second place while Chaoslegionaire is still on top (friend list only). There are also some options where it involves online stuff that has nothing in there...yet. Now I can say its worth having ;p.
|
I tried the demo this week and I fail so miserably at this game that I decided that it would be a waste of money XD I can't even finish the first lv lol there's so much thing going on on screen that I don't know where to shot or look XD
|
You just gotta know the timing when those meterites start to come. It's always a good thing to dash (L2) away from them. Make sure you use the proper weapon to elimate a certain kind. Other than that, the monster's are just ridiculous in lv 4. I hope we get more stages in the near future.
|
Well they added the downloadable content section to the game during the last update. So I wouldn't be too surprised if new planets were coming sooner or later.
Still can't believe how fast this patch came out. The game must be doing pretty well. |
Thanks for the TV tips guys. My dad is getting himself a Sony Bravia XBR, I think. It's a 32" with stuff like Motion Flow and 24p. I asked him if I could get the same thing but the cheaper version (it's basically 400 bucks less minus two features above and 3 HDMI ports down to 2), he said no, wait until 2010 *sneer* Ah well. If anything I'll be looking for a 26" or a 32" LCD in the future. By then I might even be able to find something better.. My mom did compensate by buying me Uncharted, however, so w00t!
Quote:
My boyfriend only just got me into the series back in Sept. (started with 2002) and I've been building my KOF collection. Got PS2 releases/compilations of 2000-XI since then. It's my fave fighting series now with Guilty Gear and Tekken following (Id like to say SF but uh...never played any of them except II and vs. Marvel). That's prolly a story for another thread tho~ |

Most games are only in 720P and 480i these days. As things are right now, your 1080P set will not be used to it's maximum potential too often. Mostly only the "big" titles will continue having 1080P support. And as games require more assets in order t run the game itself I feel that less games will support 1080P in the future rather then more.
However by the time the next-gen of systems come around. I'm sure that at least the "PS4" will be 1080P native. |
720p sets are always scaling, because in reality, they are 768p. I remember Samsung had a set that did in fact have a native vertical resolution of 720p, but I doubt they sell it anymore. I personally hate 720p, for reasons such as as these. It has always felt like a stopgap resolution. But I do understand its benefits when it comes to game development.
At this point in time, there is no reason not to get a 1080p display. I haven't checked the prices lately, but I'd imagine that they aren't much more expensive than 720p sets. The fact is that 1080i/p is a definitive standard. HD broadcasts are mainly in 1080i, and HDM is 1080p. In terms of gaming, you can bet that more and more games will be rendered in 1080, which has already become common for stuff released on PSN. And when the next generation of consoles comes around, I can practically guarantee that the GUI, at least, will be 1080 native. |
I agree with you that by next generation that 1080P will most likely become a native standard. But with things right now, it'll be harder to make games support 1080P when they're trying to use the console's resources to simply make the games look and run well.
Like I said. High profile games and console exclusives will mostly be in 1080P. But the majority of 3rd party games I don't think will be in it as near as much. However this is just what I've gathered based off developer interviews. Anything's possible though. As for myself I've got no quarrels with my 720P set. ^^ |
Thanks for the opinions; interesting about 768p vs. 720p I hadn't thought of that before. I just read an interview with Naughty Dog in one of the mags and they said that since 720p allows developers to do twice as many things (graphically) twice as fast that generally most games will be 720p except games that aren't as graphically intensive. Newegg has that JVC lcd that was mentioned in another thread for >$1000 for 37" so I guess it really doesn't make sense to go 720p at this point unless you're shopping for Vizio-style bargains or something...
|
If you are planning on using the TV mostly for gaming a 720p HDTV which accepts 1080p input is the best way to go right now. You'll be able to feed it 1080p signals and have content downscale to 768p rather than always feed it 720p signals and having it upscale. And 720p upscaled to 1080p native doesn't look at that great and 1080i doesn't seem to be much of an option for the PS3.
|
Lost Planet Online Demo back to download. Anybody wanna "brawl " it out ? =]
As usual , PSN : NighttimeVulture. EDIT : Looks like Chaoslegionaire is on >=]. Chaos, I saw you but i got kicked off =/. I set up a new one but you weren't in it. I did get the first win!. |
I didn't know it was back up. Let me download it again and then I'll try to join you.

That first game must have been a fluke, because I totally got my ass kicked in that second game.
|
Getting killed in less than a second is only because we have Lost Plane-teers who love to memorize the whole map and find those "glitch detections". No worries. At least it's fun in Online Mode.
|
Yeah, it was pretty fun overall, especially during the smaller games. You'd think one-on-one would be pretty bad on a map of that size, but it was more fun than the team games we played (to me, anyway).
|
Apparently in game XMB access is rumored to be Sony's big announcement next week at GDC. Should be interesting to see what comes of that.
|
That's what I was suspecting too when they pulled their last site update. Obviously that kind on site update isn't created if it isn't true. That just wasn't the time that they wanted to post the feature.
Last GDC they showed LBP and HOME for the first time. This year we get in-game XMB. Makes sense to me. EDIT: Notice how long it's been since the last firmware update? They've obviously been working on something big. ^^ Can't wait man. |
Is there an official Sony adapter for PS2 memory cards? I know there are third party adapters, but I'm not about to trust those with the save data I've collected over more than six years of PS2 ownership.
If there is, can anyone give me a retailer link, preferably one that will ship to the U.K. if possible? Also, can you tell me if it's possible to transfer my PS1 save data as well? |
Here is the product you are looking for:
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802581 While it says that USB cable is not included, you can just use the cable used to charge your ps3 controller instead. It will work. I doubt Pawnstop will ship to the UK, but at any rate, you know what to look for now. |
There is an official PS2 Memory card adaptor, though I don't know why it doesn't seem to be available in Europe. I checked on the Asia Playstation website and it's right there on the accessories list:
PS2 Memory Card adaptor for the PS3 Since it's available still in Hong Kong, maybe sites likes Play-Asia would be suitable for you.....but they're pretty fucking expensive: PS2 Memory Card adaptor on Play-Asia Wow, HK$98.00 compared HK$155.20?! Bloody rip-off!! :tpg: |

Sony discontinuing PS3 80GB model? Source: [H]ard Forum:
Sony Discontinuing 80GB PS3? - [H]ard|Forum Doesn't necessarily mean they're discontinuing the manufacturing of it, it could just be that Best Buy is dropping that model from their line-up, but that seems odd to me that they would do that if Sony is continuing to manufacture it. Maybe this is old news to some but I didn't see it mentioned on the last few pages of this thread. |
More than likely they are going to move to a 45nm Cell for the 80GB or whatever model replaces it. Rumor is its going to be bumped to 120GB which is possible since the cost to Sony is completely dependent on the hdd market. They may be able to get 120gb drives cheaper than 80gb drives these days.
|
For those worried that Home is just going to be a Second Life clone, here's a taste of its uses:
How Resistance: Fall of Man Makes Home Really, Really Cool How Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Makes Home Really, Really Cool Playstation 3: How Warhawk Makes Home Really, Really Cool I actually know someone who is working on a Home Space project and got a bit in info for him. The coolest thing is how Home integrates with other games. It has various asset hooks so developers can port their game models directly into a Home Space. So for example, Square could potentially make an addon that allows for a fully rendered Lightning to greet you in your own Home Space. 3rd parties could also use this to hype up games by holding public events within Home using various characters from the upcoming game. Think Kratos showing up in a public square and holding a fist fight match with Home avatars a few days before GoW3 is released. |
I'm really diggin' the whole 'pre-game war room' idea for Warhawk. It sounds exactly like what Insomniac plans on doing with Resistance 2, having a mini lobby with your teammates before each match. The whole warboard with little soldier/vehicle avatars that you can place on the map sounds pretty fun, although it's likely that most people won't take it very seriously.
Communication and strategizing makes those types of games about 10 times more fun than they already are. |
I didn't really care much for Home but after hearing what they can do with those things, I can't wait to try it out. The strategy room idea is awesome, it brings a whole new level of depth into the game and also sounds very sci-fi. Now I relly need to get warhawk.
I just hope adverts don't go crazy in there. |
From MTV's Multiplayer Blog:
If they could put this as in as an optional alternative for the cover system in Killzone 2, that would be pretty cool (for about 3 games, but whatever). |
If Sony wants to compete with Ninendo they're going to have to come up with ways to make control schemes easier. This feature would make peaking out of cover a LOT easier then stretching to hit L or R on the D-pad or something.
Also the enhanced 3D effect overall would actually be quite stunning in my opinion. Motion controls are cool, but it's been done by the PowerGlove and many others before even that. |
Sony compete with Nintendo on what level? The last thing we need is two consoles being used to peddle half-arsed collections of mini-games to people. I don't know what's so complex about the control schemes currently being used, what makes them difficult is when people try to crowbar too much in (the random use of Sixaxis controls being an example of that).
|
That's it, enough fanboy garbage from you, Slayer. Thread banned.

I saw that face tracking thing a while ago, looks interesting.
There was also a japanese newscast of the eyetoy and being able to put all sorts of crap in your face . And I also remember there being some sorta futuristic spy game in early stages of the ps3 in which the pseye would transfer your image as a hologram into the game but that has yet to be seen in a full game :/ |
Awesome news for the few of us that will actually care. Sony announced they added iXMF support to the PS3 SDK. This is pretty much the awesomeness of awesome for game sound and music development right now.
Here's a good article on what iXMF is: Gamasutra - Introducing the Interactive XMF Audio File Format |
just checked out the playstation store new downloads. Usual rock band and guitar hero tracks then theres a game called rocketman, which was a very poor excuse of a shooter I'd say. Not only that but the scenes were very laughable with no real attempt at any sort of movement or animation.
BUT, if you log into a japanese account and go into the playstation store there is a very nice game with a cool concept. It looks like a very fancy flash game and the music is just calming and very awesome. It's a game that focuses on the different demensions of the area such as "If you can't see it, it doesn't exist" "It exist but you just can't see it" and the drops and jumps also rely on the perspective on the screen. It may have japanese text but the dialog is in english and learning curb is easy. If you like puzzle games you find it interesting. Sorta reminds me of the Xenosaga 3 minigame, except its actually good. |

So I've been playing Ar Tonelico on my PS3 for a few days now. I've been backing up my save data due to the corrupt data reports and sure enough I ran into the problem. I've also figured out the cause.
For the few games that have this issue, do not bring up the PS3 system menu while the game is reading the system data from the card at the start. This is what is causing the data corruption since bringing up the menu has basically the same effect as removing the card during the read. I was able to recreate the data corruption almost every time by doing this. I also got a few other games to exhibit the same problem so I guess good practice would be to not bring up the system menu until after any card data read/writes are complete. This is an important consideration for those planning on getting Mana Khemia at the end of the month as the Japanese version has been reported to suffer the same issue as AT did. It might not be fixed for the US release. |
Sometimes a game has this problem, but you can reload the game and it's fixed also. It's weird. (Odin Sphere was like this)
I wanted to play Ar Tonelico but I gave away my PS2, so if you keep playing and don't encounter the problem again you should update about it or PM me or something so I know I can get through the game without it being incredibly frustrating. :( |
so update 2.20 was just release a while ago.
Ability to transfer playlist of music and photos to the psp is now available. Also being able to listen to ps3 music thru the psp or something like that. Theres also BD-live and "resume play" feature for blueray and dvd's even if the disc is ejected. divx files over 2gb are now supported as well and divx subtitles are now usable. Although i'm not sure if it means .str files becuase i was unable to make any of them work, but a few unsopported divx movies are now viewable. Now sure what else there is, it seems as tho i won't make much use from this update ~_~ anyways i have a question of reccomendation. I am goin to preorder gta4 and mgs4 but i would like to buy a game that is currently available and i was looking into getting some online action. So question is, warhawk or call of duty 4? or maybe another popular online game which i am unaware about. cod4 seems more popular but warhawk has a bundle with a bluetooth headset which i would need. |

There are, y'know, places like Blockbuster and so forth that rent games to people when they can't decide on what to purchase for themselves. Comparing these two titles is an apples and oranges affair. Neither game is a sandboxer or a stealth action title, and by listing two EXTREMELY POPULAR franchises you plan on buying into, you're not giving us a good enough idea of what you actually like.
Warhawk isn't an aerial shooter per say, it can be easier (and far more generically) classified as a multiplayer third person action game, since there's just as large a ground focus as there is on the air game. (With the exception of the Ruined Capitol map, but still.) It feels more like a simplified and faster paced Battlefield than anything else, if you want an easy comparison to something you've probably played. COD is really THE multiplayer experience of the moment, but be prepared for the annoyances that come with it being an extremely popular title and how the kill cam goes to show just how many people use the reload glitch. |

I guess I sorta did give prefrences to what I wanted but I didn't mean to do that. I just said I was going to preorder those games becuase I wanted to say it since all I have right now is motorstorm and heavenly sword. Truth is, I'd be okay with getting either warhawk or cod4 but I wanted to get an individual opinion for both games to help me make up my mind. |
Well ok, I have both Warhawk and CoD4, so will see if I can break it down for you. If you want an online only game with huge maps and teams so big that you won't actually feel like part of a team, and therefore won't really give a shit if you or your team is successful, go for Warhawk. If you want something that has smaller teams, smaller maps, making for a more intimate affair, an affair where you will actually care about the outcome, get CoD4. However, if you tend to get really into the competition, to an unhealthy degree, stay away from CoD4, as all of the glitching and bullshit that runs rampant on that game's multiplayer can become very frustrating.
|
thnx for the info. I am actually more interested in cod4 but the headset bundle in warhawk is tempting. I may just get a cheap oone later in the future.
Anyhow, I just remembered the "save target" feature in the new update. When you download a direct file for the ps3 it will start streaming instead of downloading directly into the harddrive which i find pretty cool because at the moment my ps3 is my pc ~_~ If you still decide to save something you have to go into File > Save target . I still would have liked the latest flash player for the browser but this is a nice solution for a few files for now. |
If you were looking to pick up a Dual Shock 3, Play Asia is having a 20% Easter sale right now on everything. You can get a Dual Shock 3 shipped for $54 which is less than the $55 + sales tax price the DS3 will have when it's released April 15th and get it a few weeks early.
Buy Dual Shock 3 (Black) (PS3) - Order Now! |
I totally dig Warhawk, but I can see how it's not for everybody. I would also agree that CoD4 is probably the higher quality (and more popular) multiplayer game and probably the best bet for you, even though I personally have more fun with Warhawk. Honestly, I would just get both if you have the cash, since they are both awesome.
IN OTHER NEWS. Playstation Store Redesign going live mid April - no weekly store updates until then :(. Spoiler:
|
Can't say I ever had a problem with the current store but the redesign does look nice. I noticed that the US store has a different layout which seems a tad better than how they have the features listed on the UK one:
Spoiler:
Hot damn! I just remembered the Dual Shock 3 is out in 2 weeks too. Nice. |
When I got my HDTV, I noticed that Sony had two layouts for the PS Store, and the one for SD was so much easier. Is this new layout going to be for both types of displays?
|
Oh they finally released some info. This is pretty exciting from a developer point of view as well since the new store uses a new proprietary language rather than being HTML based. It will allow games with large amounts of downloadable content (Rockband for example) have their own portals within the PSN store with layouts that suit the content rather than having to fit the content around the PSN store layout.
|
Oh just great, a new pretty update and still I cant use my freaking CCs.
Sony MUST hurry with those silly prepaid cards (or whatever they are called) |
Would it have been so hard for them to release one little Rock Band song before this update? I can't wait two weeks for cake, even if it is a lie...
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else picked up Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. I finally got around to playing it this weekend, and it was awesome as expected. If anyone else has it, I'd be glad to try out the online mode sometime. |
Quote:
I played the shit out of the PSP game, so I can only imagine how addicting a PS3 version with online play would be... |
Just a heads up as Sony has bumped up the release of the Dual Shock 3 by a week.
Amazon has it listed for release on April 4th but they already shipped mine and it should be here actually on Friday. Pretty nice considering I got mine when they dropped it to $49.99 and with no tax and free 2 day shipping I ain't complaining. :D |
Fuck it - I caved. Me and my brother just went and each picked up Hot Shots Golf. If anybody wants to play in a tournament or something, I'll see you online.
|
I am very disappointed with Hot Shots online multiplayer. No voice chat, and you can’t even see the other player when you play with them – it’s basically 60 second speed golf where everybody just gets up and swings at the exact same time, and you pray you win at the end.
I mean, I can understand this methodology with the mass 50 player tournaments, but I certainly would expect the same experience as the (awesome) offline multiplayer when I’m playing a private match with two other people. I want to see them make that chip in eagle, not fucking read about it when everybody is finished with the hole. And for fucks sake, why in the hell do they use the old keyboard for entering in text between holes, and not the new QWERTY keyboard. Incredibly lame – here’s hoping for a multiplayer patch that will address these issues... Even though the online mode was a letdown, the single player is nothing but awesome and addicting as ever. Additional Spam: Good news for home theater audiophiles (I assume Megalith with his sig), as the PS3 will be getting support for DTS-HD audio output with the 2.30 firmware update, along with support for the new revamped store. The store is supposed to go live ~April 15th, so I can only assume that is when the firmware will be available? I don't have the equipment to support DTS-HD, but do all Blu-Ray discs support this format - including games? Or is this limited to select Blu-Ray movies? LOL EDIT 3: New PSN Store Interface Walkthrough via YouTube:
|
Yeah, I was pretty underwhelmed by HSG's online as well, so I also hope they address some of those issues.
As for the new store, it looks alright, but in all honesty it doesn't seem that much different. I know it is technically, but visually it just doesn't look like this huge overhaul they're touting it as. Of course I'll wait to try it myself, but so far I'm not really that impressed by it (I'm just bitter from lack of cake). |
I think the major change they are emphasizing here is the fact that it's a native application to the PS3, as opposed to some slow clunky website like it currently is.
I think certain little changes they seem to be making - such as streaming trailers and movies as opposed to downloading them - will certainly make browsing the store more enjoyable/convenient/whatever. You're right though - we'll just have to wait and see until we use it ourselves. |
Mmm...wait for in-game XMB integration to find out the main purpose of the store redesign.
|
Oh what the fuck. You can't say something like that without telling us more.
|
Well the new store is programmed as an extension to the XMB rather than being a separate module like it was before meaning the old style required the XMB code to be purged from memory to make way for the browser based PSN. This causes all kinds of integration issues.
Basically when in-game XMB is released opening it up will also give a Playstation Store icon that links directly to that game's available content. It will be able to overlay all of the store information over the game screen so purchases can be made and installed without leaving the game. And depending on the game you might not even need to reset the game after the content is installed. It should make managing DLC for each game a lot easier too as it keeps track what is installed already. Downloads while in-game should be a big thing too and this includes being in emulated games or watching movies. |
PS3 will be absolutely perfect once it gets bitstreaming and screencapture.
DTS-HD MA decoding is excellent. My new receiver won't be released any time soon, but at least people can finally stop whining about it. |
A buddy of mine's been bitching about something I didn't even know about until it was after the fact. He was bitching that after a particular firmware upgrade, the PS3 no longer supported 7.1 audio through an optical cable. This true? I assume it hasn't made it back yet since he's still talking about it, but I don't have 7.1 audio and thus, haven't looked into it.
|
Quote:
Dude, as far as I remember, 7.1 NEVER worked on optical. Actually, I cant remember seeing anything 7.1 on optical. |
You're right. Optical is limited to 5.1 for all consumer electronics.
|
Nah mang.
6.1. DTS-ES Discrete. |
Huh. Learn something new every day.

I wasn't sure where to put this, but my question is regarding the upcoming game for XBOX360 "Ninja Gaiden 2". Does anybody know if there are plans of a release for PS3?
I used to have an XBOX and Ninja Gaiden was simply one of the best games I ever played. |
Pretty sure it will never be seen on a Sony console, because the game is apparently published by Microsoft :/.
I really don't know if there will be any kind of 'console exclusive' loophole with any of it's five remakes, though. |
They did a Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PS3.
So there's always hope :) |
Team Ninja has a habit of doing that. Release one game on another console, then remain exclusive to Microsoft for years to come. Remember Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore?
|
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the fact that this game is now being PUBLISHED by Microsoft kind of seal the deal that it will only see the light of day on the 360?
Doesn't this technically turn it into a 1st party game? |

Gamestop's running a 25% off used PS3 games through Thursday. You just print this coupon out and give it to them at checkout. You can repeat this coupon at different stores or different days, too. If you have an Edge card, you'll still get another 10% off. THAT'S 35% OFF USED PRICES. If you ever wanted to buy a used PS3 game, this would be the window of opportunity. |

The new PlayStation Store is now up. It looks really nice and runs quite well. They actually don't have the thumbnail images up yet, which is kinda strange, but the navigation works very fluidly and the transitions between pages are much smoother. Firmware update 2.3.

Definitely noticed the easier navigation.

Oh goddamn. Just noticed the title change.

I've been waiting for more word on the PSN cards. While I personally have no problem paying with a credit card, having PSN cards offers the opportunity to funds for cheaper than normal (if you can catch them on sale or get some kind of deal with them).
|
Naruto isn't my thing but I can appreciate the best looking cel shading ever.
Gametrailers.com - Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm - Exclusive Action Trailer HD Wow. I hope they start up a .hack project after this. |
Quote:
And finally, the PSN Cards... Man, can't remember for how long I have been waiting for those. No date yet for HOME or In game XMB, right? |
They've confirmed the delay of Home for another God-knows-when.
That's getting a little obnoxious. I'm really stoked to see what Home's all about, but I really wonder what's taking so long? Are they completely changing it from the first/only trailer a year ago? Here's hoping we see some new footage at E3. |
Sony have clearly bitten off more than they can chew with Home. I would bet money that any time the get people using the service, even internally, they generate a large amount of new ideas/bugs/change requests that all need looking into. I think Sony know they can't afford to cock this up, so it's now down to a battle of PR issues and fan backlash up front (delays) versus PR issues and fan backlash on release (when it all goes horribly wrong).
|
I honestly don't care. This whole "Home" thing seems pretty ridiculous to me anyway. I mean, wow, you can like, chat with other people, buy A&F shirts and Adidas shoes and play Billard with your PS3 controller. This seems to be far worse than SecondLife, and the only good thing about SecondLife was the fact that you could create a hot female account and sell your body to sex-hungry nerds and actually make a fortune with it.
|
Quote:
And, don't get me wrong, I think Home is a pretty rubbish idea too. I might give it a go when it's finally released, purely because it'll be free, but the concept doesn't appeal. |
Lemme throw a retarded question out there.
On tonight's PSN update, I saw Kingdom of Paradise for the PSP. I've long since traded in my copy and can't find a good one anymore, so I thought about downloading it. What'd be really cool though is if I can play this on my PS3 instead. So...I've never downloaded a PSP game before from the PSN. Are they actually playable on the PS3 or do they have to be transferred to a PSP? |
They finally patched the online multiplayer for Hots Shots - Quote:
I won't get a chance to try it for a little while, but it sounds like it won't be the incredibly lame 'speed golf' like it originally was. Hopefully it will resemble the offline match play that I love to play with my friends. |
Not having any voice chat is still a bummer, but at least they're taking strides in the right direction. I was playing this game all day Saturday with my sister, but I had I known these features were up I would have went online and tried them out.
So has anyone else tried out the demo for echochrome yet? I thought it was pretty good, except I thought the camera moved a tad bit too slow, and I really wish the puzzles didn't have a time limit on them (I thought it might have just been for the demo, but I remember someone on the 1UP Show saying something about that in the full version as well). It was still pretty good though, and I may get it depending on the price. |
Anyone check out the Siren: New Translation demo off the japanese PSN? Man, when you select and idle with it on the XMB you get this creepy female vocaling, I get goosebumps from it. Haha, though I gotta say, I think it would make for some great background noise during Halloween. Heh, freak out the neighbors.
The demo itself was kinda interesting, though the camera control is really messy. The way they set it up, I don't like it at all, it makes the game unplayable for me (motion sickness galore). It's a static camera, it resets back to its default angle, so rotating it doesn't really do you much good. Though, I do find it neat how they got english voice overs for their caucasian characters, kinda like Silent Hill. |
loving the new PSN redesign; however the only time my PS3's been turned on lately is to update the firmware; that's what a rigid school/work schedule will do to ya :( hoping to ramp it back up when MGS4 gets released. I definitely pre-ordered that one!
|
As I've now gone and ordered a PS3, what are the platforms absolute must-have exclusive titles? And, which titles are actually BETTER on PS3 than on the 360? (Oh, please Lord, don't let that question ignite a flame war or something...)
On my list I have Uncharted, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword. On the not-so-sure-if-must-have are Resistance, Folklore and Lair. Any suggestions? I have to admit, it IS not that easy a question to ask due to differing tastes, but every console does have some defining titles, and I'm just trying to root out which these are for the PS3. And yes, I have preordered MGS4, and will probably also get Little Big Planet. |
Heavenly Sword is an alright game, but it's hard to recommend getting it at full price because it's so short (my sister only played the game for a couple of hours every weekend and still managed to beat it within three weeks). If you can find it cheap I'd say get it, but otherwise it's a rental at best.
Folklore is awesome if you're into Action/RPG games. Play the demo first to make sure you like it (well, I guess that's true of all the games you mentioned, except for Lair, which doesn't have one), but yeah, I would definitely say this is a must buy. And while this doesn't necessarily make the game better than the 360 version, Stranglehold: Collector's Edition is a good game that has the advantage of coming with the movie Hard Boiled on the disc. I haven't played the full game myself yet, but the demo was fun and it's pretty cheap now. |
The topic of the thread actually strikes a chord with me. Does anyone else's PS3 make an unpleasant amount of noise? I thought these things were supposed to be really quiet, but my fan makes what I would describe as a mild grinding noise. It oscillates too, rising and falling in pitch and volume every few seconds. I get the feeling it's not supposed to be this way but haven't taken the steps to get it serviced under warranty. This is a 60gb model.
|
I have now also gone and got a PS3 last week. Bought GTAIV, pre-orderd MGS4 LE and rented Uncharted which I'm currently playing and loving. Learning about the media sharing which is really cool, just went and bought a optical cable for audio and some component cables "dont have a HDTV just a flat tube with component support"
|
Quote:
I'd be pretty intrested in how much better Lair gets with analog controls. It's got such an awesome soundtrack... That alone makes me want to play the game... And I kind of tend to forget that I can get demos for most games online now. My head is still stuck with the idea of the last generations of offline consoles... |
So. My PS3 arrived yesterday, now I have some minor questions:
As with the 360, my screen / TV doesn't support native 1080p/i, as it's "just" HD ready not Full HD. 22" 16:10 screen. But! The PS3 automatically sets the video output to 1080p. Which actually works. But I'm not sure if the un-downscaled, native 780 solution shouldn't actually work / look BETTER. And I take it, that I should keep the screen in 16:9 mode, right? Plus there are some shenanigans with the network connection, as it won't let me rout it through my PC, as I did it with the 360. It does work though when I just plug it to the modem and let it go online via PPoPE. Seems I should actually get me a REAL router now. |

Anyone check out the PSN store? They released the PixelJunk Monsters' soundtrack for one hell of a great price. Pay $3 and you get the 24 track (~41 min) soundtrack, plus there's no DRM protection on it so you can distribute it however you like (though they ask that you do so within legal means). I hope this is a continuing trend with the PSN and game soundtracks, as I'm willing to fork over the money at that price with no restrictions.
|
I didn't buy it myself (I like to listen to game soundtracks after I've finished the respective game, and I haven't gotten too far in PJM), but it does seem like a pretty good deal. Hopefully they keep this up, as I'd especially like to see a soundtrack release for Everyday Shooter.
|
Making various game soundtracks available for download would be friggen awesome. I would love to be able to support game composers more but right now importing is just too damn troublesome and way too expensive for me to do it often.
|
Wal-Mart: $100 gift card with the purchase of a Blu-Ray player
INCLUDING the PS3. Pretty sweet deal for anybody who doesn't have one yet - especially with the MGS4 bundle being released during the promotion. Buy the bundle, return PS3, rebuy with gift card! (Well, if this is even possible, I mean...) |
by the way where is the MGS4 board? It just disapeard

It's disguised. For epic lulz.

In-game XMB, Trophies confirmed by the Playstation blog:
Quote:
I imagine trophies are the exact same thing as 360 achievements, only displayed as 'trophies' in your 'Home' (whenever the hell that will be released...)? Anyways, I hope the XMB isn't limited to, like, viewing messages only or some shit. E3 couldn't come any sooner... |
Ugh, I can't decide to get the 60 or 80 gig PS3.
I hear people favoring the hardware emulation for PS2/PSX games for the 60 gig model. However I hear terrible things about its fan and overheating. I hear the 80 gig doesn't have as bad a fan and the software emulation is rather good after all the firmware updates. Oh, and I hear the upscaling issues have been fixed for both as well. Money really isn't a problem. I just want the one that is going to piss me off the least. Help please. =I |
What fan noise. I've got a 60gig and it doesn't bother me at all. It kicks in every now and then, loud enough that you can hear it, but never enough to interfere with anything. But, how'd you find a 60gig anyway?
|
Ebay. Where else? For 400 bucks too.
But I'm not gonna get it if the 80 gig offers less headaches. I've heard the 60 can have fan and heating issues. I just really want to be sure. |
What SouthJag said.
I haven't heard of any issues in terms of PS3's overheating or emitting a lot of fan noise, let alone the 60gb model . My 60gb is pretty damn quiet, save for the rare time I am playing it for 10 hours straight, but still - it isn't even that loud. Then again, I also set it in a spot where it has plenty of room to breathe... |
Well I intend to stuff this sucker in one of these
http://g.photos.cx/quart16-fb.jpg along with a 360 and a Wii. It's gonna be silly. |
Acer, the original North American 60 GB version is widely considered the best. It has virtually perfect emulation, and it is the most reliable model. There are no common overheating or fan noise issues, I don't know where you heard that. Now, the 80 GB model in the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle and the latest 40 GB models do seem to have a higher failure rate, in accordance with anecdotal evidence anyway. Still miniscule compared to some other consoles, but it's something to take into account. Get the 60 GB model.
|
Quote:
My 60 gig doesn't have any heat issues and the fan noise is much more quiet than my 360. |
Same here. My 60 GB has never had any heat issues, and I keep it inside an entertainment center. There's still enough room for it to breathe, and I keep it well dusted as well. And you can hear the fan on occasion, but it's not extremely loud or anything.
If you can get a 60 GB for that price, I'd definitely say go for it. |
There should be no noise issues with the 60GB since last firmware. A small batch of them had a CPU thermometer issue which was stealth fixed in the last update.
|
I have to say, I'm becoming more and more impressed with the PS3 as a machine. My flatmate was telling me how in the last week he replaced the 40Gb HDD with an 120Gb one, to which I commented that I like the idea of doing that but wouldn't want the hassle of losing data. Turns out there's a sweet back up facility so you can do restores easily.
I had just assumed that, much like Microsoft and the 360, it'd be a complete pain in the arse to do. Fair play to Sony on that one, I might consider doing that at some point. |

It sounds like a lot of the 'missing' features people are bitching about are going to (hopefully) be patched in a later firmware. Sounds like cross game invites & voice chat are the big ones that are going to eventually be addressed. Hell, even XMB access during PS2/movie playback sounds like it's currently being looked into. However long that will take, though, god only knows...
Still, I think it's pretty cool that they're finally getting around to it. ... Three features I wouldn't mind seeing - 1) Option to choose pop-up/notification positions on screen. Say, lower right corner instead of the upper right corner. Sometimes that thing blocks part of a games HUD that I'm trying to see :/. 2) A cleaned up in-game XMB. It seems pretty limited right now as to what you can actually do while accessing the XMB from within a game, so I wouldn't mind having the option to only display the XMB features that are actually functional in-game. 3) The current 'level' of a friend displayed next to their PSN ID on the friends list. Maybe with the ability to sort by level. Being able to see whose on top, it might increase competition more than having to physically select each individual PSN ID to see what level they are and how you compare. I think it would be a neat little feature... While none of these features are a necessity, I think that they would certainly enhance the experience. Here's to future updates, I guess... |
Oh hey, I got kicked out of MGO thanks to the system update >_< Now I have to wait till its done.... bleh... 2.40 is out all~ :o
|
Thanks for the heads up! Downloading now.
Don't know how much of the stuff I'll use aside from the messaging as far as in-game XMB goes, but it'll be interesting to check it all out, and of course there are the trophies. |
Cant wait to try it out, Id like to find out what Id need to do to unlock those trophies. I wonder if they'd be 'backwards compatible'. What I mean is if we have already played the said game and have done the 'requirements' for a trophy, will we need to re-do the game just to get one? :o
|
no you have to "replay" those game to unlock the trophies and as for now there's only one game that support the trophies and it's super stardust HD. The rest will need a patch...
and anyone figure out how to change our profile now? >.> |
Heh. I only wish this trophy bs came up way before. Otherwise all those trophy mission would've been done. They have a new upgrade for 5 bucks so that's better news ;p.
Inhert : I think you go to where your friend's list is. Looks ok. So far you can't really access your music for any of the games except and obviously Super Stardust. When you start the game up, it updates automatically and you enter in the trophy option and it'll synch with the game. Nice add so far but it is the early stage so its ok. Just annoyed that you can't access your music for 98% of the games. |
Maybe a patch is still needed for the other games to make use of this music thingamabob :o I only wish we can finally use our own images as our avatars. The available ones... just...are... ugh.
As for the thread title, I dont think my PS3's fan noise is... noisy. I barely hear it at all, unless it gets so hot here in my room :o |
I read somewhere today that Criterion are going to be able to apply Trophies retroactively for Burnout Paradise because of the way it stores user data, so anything you would have got you will get a Trophy for. No good for me, since I have BP on the 360, but it's ace that they're able to do that. I would like to think Uncharted can be the same as they clearly have a system in place for monitoring stats for their own 'medals' in-game system.
|
The whole reason Burnout Paradise is able to do trophy achievements retroactively is because Criterion specifically set up Burnouts save files to be bound to each players unique PSN ID - thus making the trading of game save files among other players impossible (which is exactly what Sony is trying to prevent). They said they knew that the whole trophy system was coming, and took extra precautions to allow trophies to be retroactive:
From the Playstation Blog: Quote:
Additional Spam: Uh oh. Looks like Sony pulled the 2.4 update as it has reportedly bricked some systems... Dammit. I still haven't updated mine, and was looking forward to updating it when I got back from work :/. |
oh damn you beat me too it ^^
but yeah, I heard that there were many problems and other than the very long download I didn't have any problems myself. Hopefully no one else here had any problems. We have very few ps3 users as it is. Anyways, WTF sony! |
I didn't download the update...ironically because I was lazy and didn't want to. Glad I didn't though.
|
I downloaded the update this morning (from the website before it got taken down) and installed it from a CompactFlash card. Update went smoothly, no problems occurred after installation.
|
i didn't have any problems with the update as well. but it does take a bit of time to competely load the xmb in a game. so far there's only one game that supports trophies and custom soundtracks.
i bet those bricked ps3s were caused by people turning off the ps3 while the update was installing. |
Or maybe a loose connection with the HDD :o
|
Hmm... Just a heads up.. Firmware 2.41 is up. I noticed something new to the update process. A warning now, not to turn off the system until the update process is done. "By doing so your PS3 may not be able to restart anymore" or something to that effect. With an option to turn off the PS3 after the update has been finished. (Finished downloading or finished updating as a whole?) I didnt really understand :o
Anyways, updating now. |
didn't they already have a warning not to turn off your ps3 during updates and installs and blah.
They should have more of a "Backup your shit on a usb" warning which is what i'm going to do before each update now. Nothing happened to my ps3 during 2.40 update but if I had known all the problems beforehand, I might of hesitated. It's one thing to format your hdd do get your ps3 up and running again, but I don't want to lose all my saved data as well. I'll go update later |
Update done, dont see any changes aside from.. well. nada... :o They also had a warning about how you cannot revert back to the previous firmware once you update (duh?) :o
|
Did anyone's PS3 fuck up after 2.40 here?
Anyway 2.41 fixes the problem that caused the 2.40 HDDs to screw up. Besides that it added an option to shut off the PS3 after updating, and changed the look and feel of the Platinum trophy. |
2.40 worked well for me... What they should do in the next updates is to have the update process be done automatically (no more pushing of the PS button to turn on the controller again and go through the terms and conditions blah blah blah.)
As well as let us use our own pictures for our PSN ID's avatars :o And the ability to take screenshots with any game, movie, screen that the PS3 is showing at any moment. That'll be nice. |
no they just added this option because they were always some stupid people turning off their console while it was updating and after complaining that the new firmware brick their console >.>
It's like some stupid warning that you see on sometime on other things and your first though is: if it's there it's because someone was stupid enough to do it... |
My PS3 is much quieter then my friends 360. The disk drive is quiet I never hear the HD and the fans are quiet as well. Since buying my MGS4 80GB the only problems so far have been getting TVersity to work correctly and a few errors loading DVD's.
|
i try alot of games to play music in game but show me this massage:
"music content cannot be played during use of this game" is that normal?? |
Just means that they haven't added a damn thing in this update (2.41). No updated flash, music in-game, etc..
|
i'm pretty sure the devs have to patch their games in order to support the music feature. maybe the new games will implement the new features in the 2.41 update. so far, there's only one game that supports in game music and trophies, and that's super stardust HD (i think thats what it's called)
|
2.41 also made some PS2 games more compatible for the 80gb units.
|
yeah now it's up to the devs to patch their games to make them compatible with in-game music and trophies...
|
A lot of developers are not adding trophy support, and I highly doubt they will for music either.
Burnout, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Call of Duty, among others, all are confirmed not to be getting trophies in the near future, if not at all. It kind of makes you wonder what kind of relationship Sony has with its developers. Do they just do shit for the hell of it, or are they just throwing out new features because people want them? For all of the time it took for us to get trophies, I kind of figured they'd have some sort of deal with developers or conference or something to try to sway them to support all games. Since most of the PS3 games I was looking forward to have come out and I own already, I kind of feel like I wasted something here. Of course, developers don't HAVE to do anything and I respect their right not to, but it's also quite silly. Adding trophy support to your games would probably take a very small amount of time to do something to get new consumers to buy games as well as have people yank it off their shelves to play it again. Isn't that the kind of positive attention developer's want? I'm seriously confused here. And don't get me started on the music feature or in-game messaging. |
I think the whole "trophy" thing is Sonys way of battling XBOX, and they've probably said that too. I mean the whole XBOX Achievement lets people say "Oh look what I did" And the Trophys are the same way.
I mean for some games I can see it, but hopefully more games will incorporate it now. And they freaking better before the RPG slam because having to play an RPG over to get trophies would suck. |
Insomniac came out and said they weren't gonna retrofit their games, but going forward they'd add trophy support. I assume most developers will take that stance.
|
Quote:
If they can do it I'm pretty sure others will, well probably minus the retroactive part. Anyway the point is that now that the feature is officially release, we can certainly expect future games to have them. |
I don't know if anyone else has come across this problem, but I'm having a real difficult time putting my CC in the damn store. All the information is correct but it keeps telling me "no its not!" when I'm looking at my stupid statement and putting it in exactly how it says to. I dunno what else to do.
|
As promised in E3 we can link up our psn ID with our PSU accounts and message and add friends and do all sorts of things away from your ps3.
Along with that we get these neat little avatars that do nothing more than display your name and "about me" section such as this one http://pid.us.playstation.com/user/AniZeke.jpg PSU users should have gotten an email about it by now |
Quote:
In my case, it's because sony doesn't like money from international banks. |
So, has anyone checked out the video store yet? I don't recall hearing much discussion on the matter. It's good stuff; tons of shows, really good picks like the entire season of Arrested Development, the latest season of Aqua Teen, etc.
|
Well I can't since I'm in Canada and Canada store didn't get the video store... something about our law that are different or something... so I'm guessing it will take some time before we even get one movie to rent...
|
I checked it out, and from what I saw it was alright, but not great. The TV shows and anime seemed good and reasonbly priced, but some of them had missing episodes (unforgivable in the case of 24). This was when it first came out though, so it could be fixed now. The movies, on the other hand, seemed way too overpriced. I guess the rentals were cheap enough, but the price to buy some of them was ridiculous.
|
I guess this is the place to ask for this...
Currently I need to upgrade the HDD of my ps3 (60GB model), and I would like to hear some advice. This is the best drive I have found so far: Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - Laptop Hard Drives Newegg.com - HITACHI Travelstar 5K320 HTS543232L9A300(0A56417) 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - Laptop Hard Drives (Haven't search for it too much) |
Always been a WD fan myself. My external drive is 320GBs, and my internal on my PC is 500GBs alongside an 80GB, and all three are, obviously, Western Digital. Both of those are the same RPM and same cache size, so I say go with the better brand.
Not to mention this particular review -- Pros: Tons of space, tiny little form factor. Easy upgrade to my PS3 (no striped screws). Now using my old drive as a portable USB drive. Cons: I was hoping it would cost $5.00 Other Thoughts: Good price, great product. As always great NewEgg service. So at least we know someone else did it. |

It is EXTREMELY fickle. A dash and "rd" at the end of my street name was messing me up. Call your financial institution and ask them the EXACT address you're listed as; that's the only thing that will work.
|
So my PS3 stopped reading discs the other day. Would boot up into the XMB, but would not load up any disc put into it-CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray... anything. Did some scouring online and such a problem had happened to others. thankfully I had the foresight to buy into those Product Replacement Plans from Gamestop and got myself a new 80GB.
...Now I'm stuck with two copies of MGS4. |
I've heard about that. It's the Blu-Ray drive which has died, as far as I've heard. Not much to do except from sending it to service:(
|
Did you guys check out the PSN store yet? Apparently there's supposed to be a 50% sale on many of the PSN games...
Quote:
|
Many? There's a select few games that are on half price.
I picked up Rocketmen & PAIN. |
The only game worth $5 in the sale is PixelJunk Monsters, not even Encore. I already have the original so it's useless to me.
I wouldn't even play Rocketmen or Pain if Sony paid me $5. |
Quote:
--- Anybody hear about that "super omega major bigger then killzone 2 and everything else combined" announcement about an announcement that was coming August 3rd? Turns out it's a new joint effort between Sony London Studios, Sony Liverpool, and Incognito. Looks like it's going to be a game called 'Hardware 2', which is a sequel to a game I have never heard of in the first place, which everybody says was only average in the first place. Makes it a little hard to get excited about :/. Still, part of the description makes it sound like it could be fun: Quote:
50 vs. 50 (or 1 vs. 99) and a fully destructible and interactive environment. I guess more info with screens and videos is coming August 3rd, so we'll see... |
Quote:
I am actually having a fucking ball with these two games right about now. Probably more PAIN than Rocketmen, but I don't regret either at this point in time. |
Quote:
I am about to grab the PixelJunk Eden demo though. |
is rocketman that cartoony looking one with a comic book transition.
If so, I thought that game was horrible. I couldn't stand playing that for more than 2 minutes. This of course was the demo. I also tried the pixeljunk eden demo, It was interesting. Didn't really get the point other than collecting those little spores and making things grow. If anything it looks visually eye refreshing. |
All of those games are embarrassing, and should have been free to begin with. There are no sales pertaining to PSN that could possibly be worth getting excited about, except for a $3 sale on PSX games.
Can I get Uncharted for $5. |
I'd love to purchase Siren as DLC, but it's impossible.
"Virtual" or electronic credit cards are no longer accepted by Sony for the PSN Store, and it's on sale EVERYWHERE but in Germany, due to the German store being a fucking joke, only offering games up to the 12+ rating because... I don't REALLY know why. MS' Live Store does offer stuff up to 18+ IIRC (or 16+ at least...). And due to there not really being a possibility (I know of) of purchasing stuff with fake accounts... So there's no Siren for us, maybe we'll get it on Bluray when it hits the rest of Europe. Hopefully that'll be AFTER my import-Bluray from somewhere in Asia has arrived. >_> Seriously Sony... Everyone is laughing at this. |
I bought Pain in the sale, as it was the only that I wanted to try that I didn't already own. It's pretty fun (and funny) from what little I've played of it so far, so I don't regret getting it. But yeah, I already own PJM, and Rocketman is shit. I'm on the fence about High Velocity Bowling, as it seems like it would be fun, but just doesn't have much content to bring you back (they should have gave it online multiplayer).
As for Siren, I could buy it if I wanted, but there's no way in hell I ever will as long as it stays download only. I'm just not a fan of downloading huge games like that (nearly 9 gigs), so unless it gets released on Blu-ray here (I don't see why it can't since Japan is getting a BD version) I won't be getting it. It's a shame too, because I absolutely loved the demo and was seriously thinking about getting it until I found that out. And I also tried the PixelJunk Eden demo, and while I thought it sucked at first, after playing it a few more times (incuding once with my sister), I really got into it. Depending on how much it is when it comes out, I might pick it up. |
I have a question regarding PS3's Blue Ray function.
In the midst of the announcement that Advent Children Complete will have a FF13 demo, I like to know if my US PS3 will be able to play both? Is it region locked with BR movies or does it depend on the BR disk? |
Most blu-ray movies are Region free, but blu-ray movies could be region coded, they just don't use the same code as the DVD one and luckily Asia and North America are in the same region code. So any Asian blu-ray should work on a US PS3.
Sa even if they do region code FFVII:ACC, it should still play fine on the a US PS3 Games on the other hand could be lock. It's the decision of the developers to lock or not their games. So let's hope that they don't lock the FFXIII demo. |
Just in case any one is curious, I've been reading that with the PSHome theme released today, if you DL it, then there is a chance that you can jump into the expanded PShome Beta.
Just thought I'd pass that lil bit of info on. |
Just downloaded it. All I've jumped into was a PShome Beta wallpaper in the theme. :(
|
Supposedly when you downloaded the theme you submitted your application to be in the beta and now we play the waiting game
PlayStation.Blog » Want into the PlayStation Home Closed Beta test? Here’s How to Apply |
Grabbed the theme. Here's to hoping all the shit I buy on the PS Store means something.
|
I'm thinking they're going to take people who have a lot of PSfriends, and then some who have few and see if PSHome manages to help increase the online gaming aspect.
Possibly seeing the land of highschool playing out with the jocks playing with the emo goths like one happy family </3 |
Seriously guys, I've been in the beta since day one and I played it like 3 maybe 4 times. There's just not enough stuff to do in home in the beta, mainly bcause there's almost no one log in...
And in the latest patch they remove almost half the furnitures and there's not enough items to fill up your apartment (at least not enough to make it look like a normal room) Outside of that there's not much to do for now. The arcade has bowling and pool, which are not as entertaining as they look since you don't see your avatar play the game. I was pretty much disappointed with it, but I'm always hoping that this is only the beta. There will probably be more to come and more importantly, when it will officially launch, a whole lot more people online... |

If anyone really gives a shit, one of the better looking reasons to take advantage of the region-free gaming on this console just went up as Play-Asia's weekly special. Bought so bad.
Buy Initial D Extreme Stage (w/ English manual) (PS3) - Order Now! |
Damn, I really love Initial D, and I hear this is a good game. I just bought a shitload of games yesterday though (six of them being PS3 games), so I really don't need anymore, but I may have to splurge anyway. I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thanks, Skills.
|
You're welcome.
Although it should be noted that the Asian version of this game (the one on sale, not the Japanese one) lacks any online support whatsoever, so no getting absolutely fucking raped by those insane folks who set records in the arcade, if you do order it. |
Question: Is there a store besides YesAsia which actually ships PS3 stuff to the European Union?
Just noticed that a REAL lot of good games on PlayAsia won't be shipped to us, so I was just wondering.... |
There's DVDboxoffice.com, but I'm guessing you're after jap stuff.
|
Yep. Japanese / Asian stuff. Isn't it usually the pan-asian versions that also feature english menus?
My Japanese copy of Siren - New Translation does not, while I read the Asian version (which YesAsia didn't sell) did supposedly have those. I'm usually busy playing local releases, but if a similar act of stupidity would arise again from Sony, I'd like to know in advance where to place my order. |
What about play-asia? They do sell Siren Asian version: Buy Siren: New Translation (PS3) - Order Now! but it is back ordered for now. I'm pretty sure they ship everywhere.
I just don't know why people does't buy it on the PSN, it's really cheaper there then to import the Asian version... |
Quote:
Play-Asia doesn't import most of the Sony games into the EU. :gonk: Additional Spam: Oh and guess what. Bionic Commando: Rearmed also is unavailable on German PSN, cause it's a 16+ game. Not that I care, I'll get it on XBL then, but still... This is such a fucked up joke... O_ô |
Its not as loud as the XBOX 360 fan. However the PS3 fan does get abit louder when being used for like over 2 hours+.

damn this is driving me crazy >.< I change credit card like a week ago and I decided to change my billing info in the PS store but it just wont accept it!
and even worse every time it fail by saying my credit card is not valid, I get charge 1$ on it, now I'm up to 15$ on my credit cards because of this. it seem it just doesn't recognize my billing address or something, I must have tried any way possible and it just won't work... |
Quote:
Call your bank or credit company and ask them for the exact billing address: character by character. I kid you not, it wasn't authorizing for me because of a dash and because i was typing "rd" at the end of my street number. |
Apparently there's no Warhawk thread, so I'll plonk this in here. New updates coming soon, including a free update that will add two new games modes and trophies.
Quote:
There's a video at the source link, and the jetpacks do look kinda cool. |
It should be noted that "10 new battlefields" is not 10 maps in Warhawk jargon. A battlefield is a permutation of an existing map with different border definitions and sizes, and with different weapon loadouts.
While it's common knowledge, it would be unfortunate to have anyone think they'd be getting 10 full maps with all the size variants included and subsequently be disappointed. Also, the trophy list still hasn't dropped, but there will be extras for each dlc pack, and you won't need those in order to get the platnum trophy. The rest will be either "community, game mode, vehicle or warhawk weapon" type trophies. Wish I had a solid list to see how they'd be. With the stat tracking Warhawk does, I hope they have a significant amount of variety. |
Just wanted to put out that I joined p with the folding at home team now. This should be fun!

More sales.

Totally thinking of biting on Ratchet and (hopefully) the wheel. |
Why can't they have Heavenly Sword on there for like 10 bucks or something. Racing wheel would be pretty bitchin though if it were cheap.
|
Ah, it IS the racing wheel, and it's only 90 bucks. Totally a fucking AWESOME price, and I'd buy it if it weren't YET ANOTHER ITEM offered that LOL CAN'T SHIP TO CANADA DURP DURP. The price of shipping the fucking thing twice and bouncing it off an America address defeats the purpose of any savings whatsoever. The second shipping and the incoming custom fees because of it's size and weight would be killer.
I'll have to look for one locally for a good price. Shit, that's too bad though. Wanted it BAD. |
Heh, the deal came at a good time! My brother bought a PS3 yesterday and I decided that I should AT LEAST get one PS3 game so I ordered Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction right when it went on sale. XD
The sale didn't last for a minute though. Two of my brother's friends wanted to get on the deal too and only one of them manage to get it. @_@ |
Oh man, good work. My clock must have been off by a minute or something, since I totally missed the deal by the time I got here. Ratchet went in under two minutes, it's insane. I wonder how many copies they ended up having.
Uncharted's up next, and I'd recommend your brother grab that at a good price too, if he's interested. It's a good, solid game. |
I told him about it and said he'll think about it. But when the time for the deal to start amazon gold box deal page didn't show up anything. So we kind of missed the boat (well he didn't have too much interest in the game anyway so...).
Guess too many people refreshing the page and their server cannot handle it. lol |
same happen to me I tried to get uncharted but it never got through and then the page just didn't load anymore...
|
I was definitely gonna hop on Uncharted and DMC4 as well, but Uncharted was long gone by the time I got there (thanks a lot, school), and DMC4 disappeared just as I was checking out. Oh well, I'm sure they'll be on sale somewhere at another time.
|
Wow I haven't been on the forums in a while.
So I hop onto Warhawk for the first time in a long ass time, and update 1.50 pops up. I download it, and BAM - it start's awarding me trophies from the stupid amount of time I played the game back in the day. And that, kids, is the story of my first trophy ever. |
I forgot the Warhawk patch came out today. I doubt I've actually played enough to have trophies already though. I like the game, I just don't play it that often, especially since a lot of the people who do are fucktards (and people wonder why everyone doesn't use headsets when playing online). I do want to try to get into it more, though.
|
I was thinking about picking up the newest expansions bundle, but when I logged in last night it hadn't appeared on the store yet. Might see if it's on there tonight when I get back from work.
Like Rock I doubt I've done anything to earn any trophies yet, unless there's ones for dying lots. |
You'd be surprised, if the list is any indication, some of them are impossible NOT to get.
Warhawk Trophies Power was out most of today, will have to put some time into this when I get the chance. |
The newest expansion (which isn't supposed to come out until later today when the PSN store updates) is one of the reasons I want to get back into the game. Flying around in jet-packs adds a whole new element to the gameplay and pretty much breathes new life into the game again.
I read somewhere that you can get all 3 Warhawk expansion packs for $14.99, in case anyone's looking to get into the game and save some money. |
I went to update my Warhawk and my PS3s video completely wigged out. Sony customer support told me to try different wires but, I have an odd feeling that won't solve anything.
Here's some video I took, because I have no idea how to explain this:
This one is a little bit more typical:
Sony told me to reset the video settings which is why its 480i in the videos, and it worked the first time I did it for a little while: by the time I got to the video settings and changing my output to component cables, it was done again. edit// I removed the disc, cleaned it, set my video to component. All ok. Then I booted up. Ok, seems to be working. Reinserted Warhawk, managed to update. Ok. It froze again while trying to book the game after the Playstation 3 screen. After it froze, I tried to boot with the game disk in and it instantly froze again. Boot with no game disc: Works fine again. Inserted Soul Calibur IV: No go. It froze on the "Update Found" screen, but no graphical mess. Trying to boot it now and I'm getting no signal from the console at all for two tries. Got video to work with Soul Calibur IV disc inserted. It boots, after 3 seconds the video starts to fail again. Removed Soul Calibur IV to try another empty boot. I wanted to test downloaded games. Instant fail. I looked up from typing this and it was flickering already. Tried again, managed to get to The Last Guy but it instantly started flickering and failed. Powering it off for a while until I get more ideas. I'm baffled. It's easy to assume perhaps the system overheated, however I keep it on standby so it shouldn't get that hot. Furthermore, my dorm has A/C on and the PS3 is next to an open window which almost always has a breeze. It shouldn't have overheated. Even during these tests, the amount of heat that the system emitted is fairly normal, if not cool. My Macbook Pro gets a LOT hotter. edit2// Tried my Wii, also hooked up on my other set of Component ports, absolutely no problems. Then I got the idea to switch the component ports the Wii and PS3 were using to see if maybe they were faulty. Not the case. Booted it up and the time I had it powered off gave me enough time to boot The Last Guy (The last game I bought and played, Thursday night). It got to The Last Guy main screen before it froze. No real graphical problems this time except you could see pixels that froze (turned white). I took video but I might not bother posting it since I'm sure people get the point. Need to find a way to test the cables. |
I'd start copying my saves to a memory stick if I were you.
If the US has any kind of system similar to ours, your machine is off to testing and replacement if it does the same thing there. |
Hey guys, it's me! I need some support! I downloaded the Super Stardust HD Team Pack add-on the other day and well, it just doesn't work at all (?)
I would assume the problem is that I got the original game from the US PSN store and the add-on from the European PSN store. You guys know anything about that? Thanks in advance! |
Add-ons are region-specific.

Had it working earlier this morning, but now its failing again. Apparently their servers are getting hammered hard and fast.
|
Well, due to snagging some mean discounts, I ordered myself a PS3 today. (Ended up being $250, which I'm splitting with one of my roommates). It should be put to good use since the apartment has a netflix account that can rent Blu-Rays, and now I'll have something for when Valkyria Chronicles rolls around in November.
I laughed when I saw Sony HDMI cables for $60. First thing I did was go to Amazon and saw a 6 foot one for less than $2, so that's taken care of, too. All that's left is to wait for it to ship. |
SOCOM pissed me off after I got booted because I didn't die and I rescued the people lol.
|
I'm curious as to you's guy's impressions of the beta so far. I've never played the series myself, yet I know the games have an incredibly hardcore fanbase. I think the closest thing I have gotten to something like SOCOM is probably MGO...
|
I prefer mgo, the controls are really better for mgo I think.
Graphics are pretty normal, nothing spectacular. They seriously need better server or change the way it handle, because waiting 20min to get into a game is really not acceptable... The game is more tactical I think than MGO, some will like it more, others will prefer the mgo style... I didn't play much because it just take too long to manage to get into a game... so that's pretty much all I have to say for now... |
Be thankful you've managed to get into a game at all. I've tried a couple of times now with no success. Apparently a patch was due to hit last night along with some new servers, so I might give it another go. However, if it is still hard to get into then I'll be deleting the download and SOCOM will be confirmed in my mind as something I have no interest in.
|
I'm really glad I'm not the only one experiencing connection problems, Omagnus. Still unsuccessful here as well.
What the FUCK is with this stuff, lately. At least this is a beta, where problems are expected, but still. |
I guess the SOCOM folks figured that Call of Menus 4 was really successful, so it would be a good game to model their pre-game online experience after.
|
Well, to be fair, MGO was no walk in the park when it was in beta. From what I remember, Warhawk was pretty bad as well - that game froze mid game everytime you booted it up.
I mean, this is precisely what betas are meant for - working out the conks so that they are ready to go come release. These server stability issues shouldn't be a reflection of what you can expect to experience when the final game hits retail. |
Roll on next week:
Quote:
Fuck yes. |
And in USA land it's 20 funbucks, just so you all know.
Can't wait, shitting pants. It'll be nice to have a racer we can do friend matches in, eh Omagnus? Especially after that GT5P fuckup. And all the other co-op disasters on the 360. Watch it not work for us. |
It'll be region locked so you two can't play with each other.

I have been waiting on WipeoutHD ever since Skills linked me to it months ago.
BRING IT ON. |
I played Skills once in Pulse, and he got me. That will not happen in HD. His ass with be exploded by my missiles, or i'll energy drain the bastard. Either way, he's going down. Deni you will as well, <3.

Figured that would happen..

released FW 2.43 (optional) mandatory for Japan PS3 units:

Hey guys, Folding@Home was turned into Life with PlayStation.
PlayStation.Blog » Start your “Life with PlayStation†It looks sweet, like something in 2015 in a movie from 1990. And it keeps curing cancer in the background. |

Yeah, of course you can get the news without turning on your PlayStation. I meant 'looks sweet' as in 'easy on the eyes' and as a good upgrade of Folding@Home (since now you can keep it in the background and glance at the news every once in a while, instead of looking at wiggling proteins).

Oh, Wipeout HD is coming out that soon? I downloaded the demo of that Fatal Inertia EX game since it sounded similar, but it was pretty meh. I will definitely get in on some wipeout action though.
Edit: While I'm here, what are the "must have" games at this point? I bought the 80 gig non-BC model, and also picked up MotorStorm and Soul Calibur IV. I kind of suddenly shifted gears into the PS3 scene from the Wii, so I don't know what all is happenin' with the PS3. Oh, and I also bought Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Strikers 1942 HD off of PSN. I know it's ancient, but if anyone wants to race in MotorStorm I would totally be up for that. I need to fuel my off-road racing addiction until Pacific Rift comes out. |
Quote:
|
I'm not going to tell you 'must have' games, because that is going to be entirely up to you and your preferences. What I will say, is it's worth checking out some of the following games, and seeing if there you're kind of thing:
- Assassin's Creed - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - GTA IV - Metal Gear Solid 4 - Race Driver: GRID - Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction - Rock Band / Rock Band 2 - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Warhawk Some upcoming titles to keep an eye on: - Fallout 3 - LittleBigPlanet - Resistence 2 - Valkryia Chronicles Also, yes, WipEout HD should be landing tomorrow. |
Well its the 25th, and I dont see Wipeout HD at the store. Hopefully it's tonight or something. I want it D:
|
I believe the Playstation store updates at 5 PM EST, although I could be mistaken. I remember having to wait until then for Siren to become available for download.
|
Quote:
|
Its up now on the US store as well, for anyone who hasn't checked yet.
I've never played a single WipEout game in my life, but it looks fun enough so I figured why not and decided to give it a download. I think it'll be worth it. |
Quote:
Retarded question - if I totally dug SNES Mario Kart, will I like this? It seems like one of those fast paced racer games with weapons/items to fuck up the other players... |
Some screenshots taken real quick with WipEout's in-game photo mode, in case you were doubting how sexy this thing is (click for full 1080p size):

Quote:
Yes. There are weapons. But that's about it. It has more in common with Extreme G and F-zero than anything else, if you've played those. |
...jesus.
Technically...I was (kind of) asking if they were comparable...kind of. am i off the hook . |
No, you'll still be lynched by the balls, and shitted on, burnt man.
Anyway, everyone who has a ps3 better download this game. Its fucking amazing. What I gotta do is put on some old Wipeout music [Xpander FTW] on my ps3 and use that for the new Wipeout game. |
Fuck it. I'll bite.
My brother, buddy, and myself all went in on a PSN account, so we each get everything at 1/3 the price anyways. I can't believe those are in game shots. Did you take those yourself? |
He did.
The photo mode touches up blemishes and such, but fuuuuuuuuck, it really does look fantastic. It has absolutely NO BUSINESS looking this good. It runs circles around anything else released on any platform this year, and it doesn't even BLINK. Smooth 60, no matter what the fuck's going on, it's just...damn near flawless from a technical standpoint. If it wasn't for Braid, I'd immediately declare this my personal favorite game of the year so far. It's that fucking good. |
How much are they charging for it?
Nomatter the price I'm sure I'll buy and download this tonight when I get home. Which reminds me, add me dammit! I sent an invite to most of you already. My PSN ID is chanic. |
It's $20, and from what I've played so far, it's well worth it. It easily trumps every other game released on the PSN so far, and a lot of retail games as well.
I haven't played too much of it, so I'm still not great at it (Karasu totally owned me in the two races we had), but it definitely feels like something that I could improve at with practice. |
the game really that good?
Might consider getting it if it is and if I do get it, I expect online group races X| |
Quote:
Quote:
This game is gorgeous and runs silky smooth the whole god damn time. It's not a huge install, load times are pretty damn short, it's priced incredibly well (many people would have charged full release price for this) and overall it puts a lot of release titles to shame. I don't know if there's a demo available, but everyone with a PS3 needs to at least try this game. Also, we definitely need to get a GFF session going (I'll be on tonight for some gaming). |
Hmm... only 8 tracks? I hope that they add more content over time if that is the case. I'm still at work so I haven't gotten my hands on it to check. But no reviews have mentioned track numbers, and previews have only said 8.
Anyone care to enlighten me? |
Quote:
|
well then I'll see if i get it later today and I'll be online in the evening for any invites and from what I gather, this game has custom soundtrack option which is a huge plus for me.
|
I dont if anyone else noticed, but I love how the music plays a part in this game. When you jump in the race, the music reacts to your jumping, and also when you play Zone...its like playing ReZ or something, seeing the entire level reacting to the beats and changing colors. So fucking cool.
|
Quote:
|
I guess it depends how tight money is, but for $20 you're getting a pretty great chunk of game. It's worth noting that this does include a 'Pilot Assist' feature to help newer (or newb) players find their feet.
|
Pilot Assist will do more to hurt your technique than help it, especially if you're learning.
Besides, being difficult is the name of the game. Wipeout's never been terribly easy. |
Wow, took me 4000 loyalty points to unlock a new paint job for one team. Getting them all could take a while.
And yeah, I tried pilot assist to see what it does. It doesn't really assist your driving as much as it makes your ship a spaz that is utterly terrified of the track walls. |
The second livery unlocks at 8k.
Play on a harder difficulty level, or do well on Zone mode and you'll get 200+ per race and 400+ per Zone. I've got about 18k for Assegai and I haven't played much at all. |
It's also worth noting that online play adds to your loyality stuff, so you can build up a fair amount of points without thinking about it.
|
Quote:
Also, anyone else think it's odd that the Harimau ship is identical stat-wise to the Assegai, except 10% less on a stat. Usually games shuffle stats around for variety, not outright say "this one's better." |
Quote:
http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/OmagnusPr...202722.jpg.jpg Also, some more snaps from this gorgeous looking game: http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/OmagnusPr...193042.jpg.jpg http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/OmagnusPr...192758.jpg.jpg http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/OmagnusPr...210122.jpg.jpg http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/OmagnusPr...204347.jpg.jpg |
Harimau's been like that for a while. Since Pure at least. It's been made somewhat obselete by other teams, but it's hardly an incapable craft. It's not enough of a change in stats to say it could be a handicap, since at those minor differences, you won't really notice the performance hit.
One of us needs to get off our lazy asses and make a thread for this game. |
I nominate Omagnus since he has pretty pics.
Just curious. Are people jumping around from team to team, or have loyalties already been drawn? Since Skills has so many loyalty points with Assegai, and most of Omagnus' photo mode pics have been of EG-X, I just have to wonder. |
It's probably easiest to pick a team who's craft handles in a way you like. Some of the loyalty rewards come at certain total amounts and some come at certain amounts for certain teams.
I find it easiest to stick with one craft and learn it's intricaces. Bouncing around as the situation and track calls for it is not a bad idea either, although the learning curve there would be considerably higher. |
Hmm... ok. I've been using AG Systems a lot, but I recently found I had to step up to one of the more difficult but faster craft (Auricom, I think) in order to get a gold on a time trial in the Frenzy campaign.
|
I wish my PS3 would work but I recently erased all my data trying to back it up. I have the box, but all the good data recovery software is on Windows, and my Windows partition recently broke. So I need to reinstall it over the weekend so I can ship out my PS3 to Sony. I don't even know if they'll FIX it.
This is really tough. |
Maybe I shouldn't really play Wipeout online with you guys anymore. I don't want to embarass you any further. This level of rape might lead to post traumatic stress disorder, and maybe even suicide.
|
I can at least use my newbness as an excuse. Karasu, on the other hand...
(though I have no place to talk, since he could still easily hand me my ass as well) That was definitely awesome, though. Despite the fact that I sucked balls, I still had a lot of fun with it. We need to get a full on, eight player GFF race up in this bitch NOW. |
just got the game, took a bit to download >_>
Tried the first level really quick and found it fun, although I haven't played wipeout since ps1 on a demo so knocking on the walls was a normal. would have loved to play online but i didn't have the energy since I seem to have caught a virus ~_~ Maybe this weekend |
Ok, made a thread:
http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/vi...tml#post648030 Do we want another one in the multiplayer arena, or will that one suffice for now? |
Anyway to make my PS3 Compatible?
Hello all,
So I went and bought a PS3 - but didn't realize that they ended the backwards compatabilityness of it... ugh - is there anyway to make it compatable to play ps2 games? |
Nope. None.
|
shitty. :(
|
Yeah.. The recent ps3's are the mother of all fuckups.. At least you got a fan ;p
|
Oddly enough, you can still play PS1 games on them. Go Figure.
Wiki's got a chart of which are and are not PS2 backwards compatible. I think the last backwards compatible one to hit the market was the Metal Gear 4 bundle. Edit @ Chato: The new ones have a different/better fan? I never heard anything about that. |
Sorry. I heard something about the new models having a stronger fan that can blow out dust or something and that the 20/60 models don't.
Other than that, Anyone here upgrade ? Not so fancy I hear.. Good thing though is that SF4 is gonna have the PS3home feature. |
PS3 Recovery Menu in FW 2.5:
To go into this mode you need at least firmware 2.50 and do the following: -Place your PS3 in STANDBY mode -If it goes into the video reset setting then you messed up, and do it again till you hear a double beep. |
Well the video feature is going to have an option to browse through chapters of movies recorded into your harddrive which is what i wanted for quite sometime since the psp has had this for the longest time already. Other than that, it says that there is a power save feature to turn off your controller or console after a certain amount of idle time, and BD/DVD options are going to be renamed into Video options.
Nothing too grand, downloading it now anyways |
Hey , does anyone know if it got a flash update? Because now I can see vids on gametrailers..
|
holy crap your right chato, used to be that I had to download the videos from gamtrailer in order to watch them but now I can just stream them. It's about fucking time they updated the flash player.
Also I just noticed that it shows the amount of time a person has been offline, so I guess I'll remove some random people to who added me outside these forums just to keep track of the people who do sign in. Now if only we could categorize our friends list. |
Yeah, the update upgraded the flash player, lets you see how long it's been since your friends have been online, and upgraded the trophy system (from what I can tell, it tells you how much more percentage away from the next level you are, and when you get a trophy, the actual trophy icon is displayed next to the image denoting what type of trophy it is (bronze, silver, gold or platinum) and the accompanying text), among other things.
|
Wow. Hulu.com is officially working for us. Good time to see that one episode i missed of the Office.
Shenlon : wut ? you plan to make a shitlist ? ;p |
There's also the option to do sequential playback of videos. Eg. you can have play an entire folder of trailers/vids, instead of playing one then closing it and opening the next. The option to replay for videos appears to be new too.
|
Right now, I dont know what to do with this DIVX VOD thing. It gives me the reg.code but nothing else. I installed the stuff but now its asking for more shit. Anyone else try this ? Also , I heard about them having mkv support.
|
So I got my PS3 back. Brand new unit.
Downloaded a bunch of games and played a couple hours of Resistance. Then it started doing the same shit to me again. This is a really sick joke. |
Oh man, the game console gods do not smile upon you, Ultima. That totally sucks.
Quote:

I have a backwards compatible 80, and it doesn't get all that hot. A little warm, maybe. But never all -that- bad.
|
Quote:
Before it was in horizontal position on top of a wooden cabinet next to an open window with a nice breeze. Now this new unit is on a cardboard box on the ground next to the TV. It's not very hot in here at all. I had it running for about 15-20 minutes with the plastic wrap they had on it covering the fan, but I realized the error in my ways and quickly removed it, so maybe that's it? While that was a fairly stupid move, I never played any games and so the system had no reason to become too hot. Even so, something like that never happened with the old console, so really, I don't get it. Unless Sony just threw a new case on my old PS3 and sent it back. Oh well, time to call up Sony AGAIN tomorrow to request another box. There goes my dreams of playing LittleBigPlanet on release day. |
@ani - Well I dont really complain cause of that but if anything, I use a dust off can to keep shit away. Besides, cold temperatures are returning so that'll keep things steady in my room
Interesting to see alot of people having this heating problem. I would get some kind of freeze when i get out the internet browser. It kinda happens a few times but doesn't really damage the system so.. Btw, did anyone get trusty bell ? Is it really better than the 360 version? |
Quote:
|
A little heads up everybody. Amazon.com is doing another PS3 Gold Box deal starting at midnight PST. No clue to what's being offer as Amazon.com shun LightningDeals.com from their list.
Have fun. :tpg: |
So a few days after firmware 2.50 hit, the blu-ray drive died. It no longer spins to read any sort of disk. Cruising the PS3 forums it seems that alot of others have been having this problem after 2.50.
|
ever since the new update my ps3 randomly froze three times on different games. I had to reset my ps3 and hope that my saved data didn't get corrupted. This was on the 80GB ps3.
Also trophy support for gta4, I don't feel like playing the whole game again though |
LoL. Thank god I let the nerds test drive all new firmware first, regardless of how worthless and moot they always are.
*Changelog* PS3 XMB font changed to Times New Roman. ::PS3 blows up:: Of course I am curious about the new chroma upsampling feature for BD. Too bad I got a real BD player now. |
Hey did anyone get some kind of "Rebuild" on the harddrive? It just renamed most of my video files.. heh this sucks =/
|
Quote:
also, what is it with you weirdos, are you too dumb to update your firmware or what |
Umm I did update and it wasn't really my intetion to do it. It just came up as soon as I turned it on. It wasn't anything bad but it does suck cause I have to rename my vids again.
either way, nothing's wrong. |
hehe okay, I thought you fucked up your PlayStation 3, but apparently, everything is okay (hi-five)
|
Just to add, My fuckin playlists are no longer there. Now I gotta make them again for wipeout. Jeez.
So does anyone know what this 2.52 update supposed to be about ? |
# New for 2.52: The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION®3 format software has been improved.
# New for 2.52: A text entry issue that occurs when using the on-screen keyboard, USB keyboard or Bluetooth® keyboard with some PLAYSTATION®3 format software has been addressed. |
So if anyone essentially wants an 80 gig PS3 for $300, Walmart is having a pre-black Friday sale, which includes, among other things, the 80 gig bundle and a $100 gift card for $400. The sale is at 8:00 am tomorrow though, so I guess you'd have to go out and line up in a few hours.
|
I'm sure every ps3 person has this game by now, but in case you peeps don't...
Metal Gear Solid 4 was released as a Demo at the PSN Store. If you dont have the game, check it out :D! |
I'm not scrolling through 29 pages...but I just got the system over the weekend and I wanted to see how these "media machines" were. Fuck that shit.
Trying to use WMP11/TVersity/Nero to play media from my PC and WMP won't play audio and only plays like 3 video files, TVersity gives "corrupt data" errors on just about anything other than AVI (especially MKV files), Nero just sucks, and to top it all off, I get a 50-step guide on reinstalling codecs when the crap should be working in the first place because I know what I'm doing. Ugh. |
Anyone who got in the Playstation Home Beta? :o
|
Shit, I didn't even know they were sending out more beta keys. I remembered I had got some email from Sony, but I figured it was just the usual "what's on the PS Store this week" so I didn't even bother to look at it. But after seeing your post (I figured you wouldn't just randomly be asking, since people have been in the beta for a while now), I checked the email and it is indeed a beta code for Home.
I could quite honestly care less, but I'll still give it a try. At this point, I don't think anybody really cares too much about it, but Sony probably figures they put so much into it now that they might as well release it. But seriously, they played their cards way too early (revealed at GDC 07 and it's still not out yet, almost two years later), which is why it seems that any excitement it had going for it is pretty much dead. So yeah, I'll give this a download and try it out sometime tomorrow. |
I'll be interested to see Home purely to see how it ends up, but yeah, can't say I'm at all bothered by it though (don't think I'd bother with the beta even if I'd been given a code) because it seems like a bit of a dragged out mess. You'll have to post your thoughts somewhere Rock and let us know what you make of it.
|
Well, servers are up, time to dive in :o
|
I tried it out yesterday. You can basically complete the tutorial and roam around everything within an hour and then have nothing to do. Since it's the beta the mall stores have nothing, didn't try out bowling or pool with any friend yet though.
Also seems like we can create a club but not sure if that actually works in the beta yet. Game launching also is not available. All you can really do right now is chill. I'm just glad I got my ps3 directly connected to my router now since everything loads so smoothly except of course when you first enter a room and it's loading all the profiles. Also, I think if you get a score of 2000 in enchronome (spelled wrong) you get a special outfit that looks like a storm trooper minus the helmet. |
I tried it out for a little bit too. It's very nice, not exactly fun since I was alone. Hopefully, when more people I know get on it and they add more things it'll become more entertaining.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing it, I feel it has a lot of potential that hasn't been reached yet because of beta. |
Its pretty much sad that I cant have a TV or even a Radio in 'my' studio. All I can do is fill it up with chairs and tables and lights :| The mall is empty, the only thing going there = chess games.
Game launching is enabled I think. I saw one earlier for Warhawk, sadly, I dont have the said game. Only arcade game worth playing for me is the stacking game. Ice breaker and Echocrome = no thanks. Bowling is fun, but hard. Billiards is way better. :) Pretty much fun to see my character dance. LOL. Will have to spend more time creating my character to look more like me. :o |
ok after spending some time with home after a few more people got into the beta I can already see where this is going.
It's a public place for immature kiddies that like to make obvious sexual poses who want to hump every girl thats on the screen and those girls have no mics but when they do it's obviously a guy who put the voice pitch on high to try to sound like a man-she. Also I was surprised to see the amount of people that do have mics, I'm even more surprised that it looks like some of the xbox kids slipped into it and annoy the crap out of you. It's weird but I found it fun when it was emptier, when the real thing comes out I'm only looking forward to hanging out with people I know and those of you here on GFF. |
RPGFan News - SaGa Frontier Archived in Japan
Why does the Japanese PSN get all the good games. ;_; SCEA, can you please make our PS1 selection suck less. Thanks! |
Hey what do you want, you can get awesome games like Theme Hospital and Destruction Derby
|
Heh. I'd sure as hell like Saga Frontier 2...

Anyways, seems I've been invited to the Home beta. I'm not all that interested by the Home concept, but I'm willing to check it out so I'm downloading that right now and will give it a look. I'm not expecting much though to be honest. |

It'd be one of those things you'd buy again even though you know better. Like we all do with collection games and ports of everything to the fucking XBLA. That we all buy anyway. For some reason. ;_;

Anybody have any suggestions for a good universal remote that can be used with this thing? I'm getting sick of having 3 remotes on my coffee table, and would probably double as a pretty sweet xmas gift for somebody.
I don't think the official Playstation Blu-Ray remote is going to do me any good, what with it's lack of an IR port or a backlight (retarded). One that would be compatible with a Comcast DVR would be preferred, if such a thing exists :/... Any suggestions or recommendations? |
Heads up, guys. 2.53's out. I'm currently not home but let us know what it is whoever gets it.
|
|
Fuck yes. I saw the teaser and I'm pretty stoked now. Himalayas, I guess? Hopefully we'll get some gameplay footage from the VGAs.
But Naughty Dog, where's my next Jak game? |
Quote:

Quote:
Any suggestions on an IR port for the PS3? I've been getting mixed reviews on all of them, with the biggest nuisance being the fact that some automatically take up controller slot 1 when you turn the system on... |
Quote:
EDIT: That said, I just found both parts and now I'll try it out. :3: Additional Spam: It works. Just be sure to configure your buttons manually for the Harmony. You'll need to set the UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT especially. |
Wait, now I'm a little confused. I think I probably just have my terminology wrong.
I understand that there is no IR on the actual PS3, so an additional piece of hardware is necessary for the PS3 to read IR signals (which I guess I was calling an IR port). I guess I was wondering what the best IR dongle (receiver) is for the PS3 since I know there is a couple out there, but it sounds like the old PS2 IR receiver might be best, although I was hoping for something a little more ergonomic/pretty. |
Amazon.com: Warhawk (No Headset): Video Games
Alright Cocksticks. 10 bucks. Probably not for all that long. But now you really have no reason not to own this. |
Gone. No more for $10.
|
Quote:
So no, there is no "easy" way that Sony has provided to sidestep their own products. If you're that concerned with how fashionable your console is, I recommend you go buy yourself some makeup and a dress, as this is hardly something to complain about. Deal with the 1-foot extension on your system. |
So, it looks like HOME has been released today, I just downloaded it, but it isn't working properly yet...FUCK
|
Your able to log in now but you'll probably be annoyed when you keep getting signed out every 5 to 10 minutes.
Only major difference from the closed beta is that the plaza has been completely redone, and the new spaces for Fallout and Uncharted. Also five dollars for the summer Home hahahahaha, Bull! (I got it for free though) |
Quote:
But yeah, everyone is fuming and I'm just like "I'm glad I 'bought' everything when it was free" |
Home sucks ass, I already deleted it.
I wandered around to all the different locations, saw that they were just a glorified chatroom and was mystified at some of the stupid design decisions Sony went with: -Why can only 1 person access an arcade machine/pool table/bowling at a time if we can't actually see them playing it? I could understand the limit if they were playing the game in real-time in front of you, but this is just ridiculous. -Why do things in the mall cost REAL money? Not only that, why should I buy a fucking lamp for $1? Who would actually buy this shit? I predict NO ONE. -The only interesting thing I was hoping could be possible with Home was putting up a TV in your personal apartment which could stream your PS3 video content with your friends if they came over. I wasn't able to see if this was possible because apparently there aren't any TVs yet, not even in the mall. HOME IS GARBAGE. It's as if you took Second Life and stripped out everything but a bare-bones lobby with no user-created capabilities. EDIT: Wow, Penny-Arcade hit the nail on the head today: http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/1005/20081212yh5.jpg http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/12/12/ |
that comic is 100% accurate, especially the raping part. (I'm serious)
|
Quote:
So yeah, I think deletion may well be the next move, even though I have 240Gb of free space I feel like Home is wasting 3 of them. |
I'm gonna let home evolve some more and see what happens.
Right now I'm not impressed at all. |
Some mildly amusing crap:
there's a glitch that lets you get a sofa outside of the harbour studio apartment, and since the camera follows the furniture you are placing, you can go wander the harbour via your flying couch. Out on the end of the pier by the big yacht, there is a plaque that reads "You really shouldn't be able to read this." And in the white bell tower, there is a mine from Warhawk stuck to a pillar. |

Honestly, if the sponsor rooms are anything more than Yaris quality bullshit I'll be extremely surprised.
Unless Virgin magically reappears and makes another Cool Spot game, fuck yeah. |
I wonder how long it'll take army recruiters to start recruiting people through PSH (yes...I'm calling it psh, not PSHome)
After all...they're doing it through secondlife. Once Sony starts charging for more stuff, I'm going to call it PlayStation SecondLife |
I got extremely bored playing it for 30 minutes. Going to the cinema to watch a trailer is not my idea of "fun". Neither is watching 10 creepy avatars doing the 'Running Man', because its so funny lol.
I'm taking a look at it when the full version launches, but until then I'll just delete the whole shebang. |
Besides the fact that PSH sucks ass per se, it's pretty sad that it's region locked. The only cool thing you can do is creating a hot looking female character and wait for all the jerks to invite you to their home. It is ridiculous.
|
OK, so I saw links to videos showing female avatars being surrounded and mobbed by dancing guys... WHAT THE FUCK?! I really hate people sometimes and shit like this just brings out and exaggerates the most idiotic elements, which is why I couldn't give a flying fuck about it all. As much as I like the PS3, this really is a major case of "Sony, lol".
|
Home's Home. Not sure what anyone expected, but I was never really thrilled about the whole idea. Never really saw the point and still don't. Should've just scraped it and stuck with the publicly displayable trophy room. Go to view someone's trophies and you're tossed into a virtual representation of it. Would've been mighty satisfied with that, more so than the entirety of Home.

If you put that you're female in your profile, you'll get a crap load of messages in less than 30 seconds. |
I tried out Home for a spin a few nights ago. Holy shit I have never seen such a wellspring of trolling opportunities. My first avatar was an extremely obese dark-skinned lady with no neck and a magenta mohawk. There's nothing to prevent players from spamming the predefined text commands over and over and over again forever (so you can spew an endless stream of "I have no keyboard" without retribution).
As an experiment, I came up with a more pleasing-to-the-eye buxom chick for a second profile and went around the main plaza hitting "Follow me". Suddenly I had gangs of twenty following me around. And dancing. And saying hi. Some of them through their headsets. Once there are more areas - and an opportunity to turn other people off altogether - I will consider giving it another go. |

Hey. Suikoden on my PSP. Cool.

Amazon.co.uk apparently wants to boost their video game sales before this year ends.
Amazon.co.uk PC & Video Games Bestsellers: The most popular items in Games. Updated hourly. Thanks to the incredibly weak British Pound, you can get games like Little Big Planet for 17 GBP (25 USD), Mirror's Edge for 15 GBP (22 USD), Fallout 3 for 24 GBP (36 USD) and so on and so on. You should check it out! |
Soo uh.. anyone here playing wipeout hd ?
|
I have a question to anyone who messes with the Japanese PSN.
1. Can a US system play downloaded Japanese PS1 games? 2. If yes, is there a cheaper place to buy Japanese point cards besides play asia? They want 45 USD for a 3,000 yen card which is overpriced. |

If you want to bring the cost down, you can try pooling with other people who want the same games (all PSN content, with the exception of some disc-based games like Warhawk or Gran Turismo, can be shared with four other people). |
I bought Crash Commando because I was a big fan of Soldat, and I am very pleased by the gameplay and the new features they've added to the formula.
Unfortunately I can't get it to connect to online multiplayer games. At all :( |
To get a PS3 or not
I still haven't gotten a PS3, the first reason for it is (was) that I can't play older PS2 games with it. If I'm right there was, for a short period PS3 made that could run older games, but they aren't made anymore because it was too expensive.
I've seen auctions for these 'early' PS3s on various auction sites, but I do not want to buy a consol through an auction site, in this case I prefter buying it from a store. The second reason I've waited is of course the price, hope that it will drop. I think I will be buying an PS3 when FFXIII is released. (I love that game serie too much!) :D A question, I have a DVD disc for my PS2 called 'Region X' which makes my PS2 accept all region DVDs. I'm wondering if there is a similar product for the PS3 which makes so you can play older PS2 games. |
You can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want the early one, you're right, you'll have to get it online somewhere, because they're all gone from stores.
The price sure as hell better drop at some point. It gets harder and harder for them to convince people the PS3 is worth the expense when it's that far above the 360. Speaking of 360, you are aware that FFXIII is coming out for that also, right? Unsure if you already have one of those, so just pointing that out. And no, a region disc like that will not enable the PS3 to play PS2 games. A region disc doesn't magically make a system able to play anything you put in it. The PS3 is still a PS3, and without either the PS2's hardware or some kind of emulation built in, it simply will have no idea what to do with a PS2 disc. Without either of those components, which are impossible to install yourself or with any accessory, PS2 games won't work on a PS3. |
There's still at least a year until the English release of Final Fantasy XIII. Though, there will definitely be a price drop by then, and maybe a software PlayStation 2 emulator.

I'm talking about an official software-only emulator. The later models emulated the processor, but still had the hardware GPU.
|
Oh, that makes a LOT more sense. I had the impression that they emulated everything and took that out due to cost concerns, and I never could figure out what that was about.
|
If you already have a PS2, backwards compatability shouldn't really be an issue. PS2's don't exactly take up a lot of space and you can only play one game at once anyway so even if your tv only has one input slot, just swap the wires round when you want to use the PS2. Also, whilst we all love nostalgic gaming, you'll find that what with the excitement of getting a new console, you probably won't be playing any PS2 games for months after you get the PS3 anyway. Certainly I've played a single original Xbox game since getting my 360 (Although to be fair, there aren't really any classic Xbox games compared to the PS2, certainly not that haven't been superceded by 360 sequels).
Final Fantasy XIII will be coming out on the 360 as well as the PS3 so if it's just that you're after, you might fnd a 360 is a cheaper alternative. XIII VS however I believe is a PS3 exclusive so if you like Kingfom Hearts, you might need a PS3 although Square seem to get closer to Microsoft with each announcement so there's no guarantee that Vs will still be exclusive come 2010 when it nears release. That's the other thing, FFXIII is still over a year away so there's no need to rush into buying a console to play it on just yet, the price might well fall further by then. I was under the impression that the PS3 was a multiregion dvd player anyway although that might just be bluerays. If you have any old dvd player though the chances are you can unlock it for multi-region playback with just a few button presses on the remote. A hardware region locking system is pointlessly expensive and every dvd player I've ever come across had a region unlock code. Just type the exact make and model name and the words "Region unlock code" into Google and chances are, it'll be there. I don't know where you live but you can get a dvd player of PS2 quality for about £20 these days so that shouldn't be a deciding factor in whether to buy a PS3. I haven't exactly answered your question but I hope that was of some help. Edit: Haha, I completely missed your point about the dvd disk, sorry. |

And now another question.
Which console is best PS3 or 360. I'm a big fan of the FF series, other games I liked alot are: Secret of Mana (SNES) :) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Star Ocean 3: Til the end of Time of the FF games I like FFIX the most, overall great; gameplay, music etc (much game for the money) While also FFVII is good in it's own way having an excellent story. RPG games I did not get, FF Tactics, Crisis Core (not buying a PSP just for one game) I like the adventure/explore RPGs more that the action/strategy ones. I'm not in that a great neeed of a DVD player so there I'll save some money. I'm from Sweden by the way. |
just about all the games from square enix games are going to xbox. So it'll be cheaper for you to get a 360 at this point, or if you have one just keep it. I myself have a ps3 but I'm not missing much since both 360 and ps3 are becoming more and more alike as time passes.
tactics, zelda, mana, are all going to nintendo handhelds and wii so we'll just brush those aside. |
Of the games currently available in Europe, you'd probably get more out of the 360 with Lost Odessey, Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant all available and all pretty similar to what you listed as liking. There is no "Better or worse" really. The 360 is slightly cheaper and few would disagree has better online functionality, although you have to pay £40 a year for it. The PS3 has the benefit of being a bluray player though if that interests you.
Personally, I've got a 360 and am very happy with it. There's a huge range of games and some really good ones amongst those. The PS3 has a more limited library but of the games it has, a couple are very good (Little Big Planet if you like that kind of thing, Metal Gear too) although currently, rpgs are a little thin on the ground. Your best bet really is to take a look at the games available for each and decide based on that. |
If Sony doesn't drop the price of their system in the next few months, they're idiots. Looking at how they got spanked by their competitors, a price drop is necessary, regardless of their losses on the systems. Give it a few months.
|
from rumors I've heard, you'd have to wait till april for a price drop. This of course, rumors :/

Since all you seem to like is well established IPs from Square and something from Nintendo that everyone likes, fuck all this generally RPGless HD console crap and buy a DS. Something tells me there will be a lot less buyer's remorse that way.
Honest to God, I hope someone actually takes the advice from a thread they make like this. No one ever does though and nothing gets accomplished. Even though the advice given by our regulars is usually pretty damn great. Anyway, merged with PS3 thread. |
Quote:
In the short term, what with the global recession, the 360 might hold it's own for a while but as more and more people turn from dvd to bluray, I expect that alone to sell a shit load of PS3s, just as the dvd functionality did for the PS2. Not that it matters a jot but I honestly expect the PS3's userbase to dwarf the 360's in about 5 years time. |
I think a price cut, even of a fairly token amount, would help them pick up the pace though. I agree, I think the PS3 is in a stronger position than a lot of people give it credit for, but the 360 is only selling as well as it is because they've reduced the price drastically (though people still don't think about all the additional shit they need to buy).
The thing Sony really need to do is make good on their '10 year lifetime' promise. And not just, "Well it's 10 years on and we have the PS4 and are looking into the PS5", but a case of not really talking much about a new console until we're getting near the 10 year mark. |

That said, I imagine Nintendo will have to release something before then, the novelty value of the Wii surely can't carry it much longer? |

So...uh...Killzone 2 demo comes out on Monday for people who pre-order the game...
...BUT DOES ANYBODY HERE CARE (how has nobody created a thread yet)   ??? |
I just preordered it a little while ago and I'm not sure how many codes will be delivered but if I do get emailed one, I'll be online for some playtime. If not, then I guess I'll see ya online when it comes out for reals :/
|
Yeah, I've got Killzone 2 preordered already, though I don't think we have a restriction on the demo on the European PSN. That said, I didn't think the demo hit here until something stupid like Feb 26th.
|
Yeah, that's when it comes out here for people who didn't pre-order, which is pretty stupid. I just don't get the mentality Sony has been using lately with this and a few other games (LocoRoco 2, Resistance: Retribution) where they give a demo to those who pre-order. I mean, if someone pre-ordered it that's basically a sale in their pocket already, so shouldn't they be putting the demo out there for people who are on the fence about it? More so than a day before the freaking game comes out at least.
|
I tried out the Project Origin demo a few days ago. I was addicted when I was able to enter in that damn mech suit. So that makes it this and street fighter 4 for next month =].
|
FEAR 2 demo was very spooky. When you were in that classroom, and you saw apparitions appearing in the distance, and chairs would be moving, lockers shutting and opening...it was disturbing, but that's a good thing I think. It means that their formula is working. Id love to try out the full game, but I hope that you're able change the configuration of the controls. I don't like R2 as the firing button. It should be R1.

I know the PS3 was ahead on sales up to early summer and although I've nothing to "prove" it to you, anecdotal evidence I've read suggests that's still the case. That said, websites are a notoriously shit place to see sales figures. A Google search reveals two pages on the first pag, both updated in October with one suggesting the 360 is outselling the PS3 2 to 1 in Europe and the other saying that the PS3 is consistently outselling the 360. To be honest, I don't actually give a fuck either way, I was merely suggesting that people are writing off Sony too early as they have the benefit of experience and lower hardware costs on their side. Ironically, news today is that Sony's sales figures are below their expectations and in fact have declined in the year so perhaps I was too quick to jump to their defence. One would need to see Microsoft's equivalent report to compare fairly though and I'm not sure they're so keen to seperate their business divisions in their annual report. Oh yeah, and the DSi is still, basically a DS. Hardcore Nintendo fans will see it as a whole new thing but the casual user, i.e. the overwhelming majority of the DS's userbase, will only get one when their current DS breaks. It will not be a business saving release. |
Ignore the context that I had, use irrelevant info, and beat around being wrong. I don't really care, but just don't go on about something you're so sure about when you're just guessing. Moving on....

The only "safe" people are those at Activision who refuse to make new games. They dropped Ghostbusters because there weren't going to be sequels. Free money for Atari. Sony's only concern is specifically in their gaming division. Simply owning the format Blu Ray will yield plenty of profits.
|
Anybody tried out the Resident evil demo? Does it carry online like the xbox version, if it does we must try it out. Maybe then I might consider buying it day 1
|
I've only tried out the single player so far, but it does have both online co-op and split screen co-op (I honestly wasn't even sure if this was in the game or not, but now that I know it is I'm more tempted to get it at launch so I can play it with my sister) in the demo as well.
|
The game's alright. It doesn't look boring but I'm sure the full game is much better.
|
I just got through playing the first stage with my sister and holy shit that was the most co-op fun I've had in ages. The A.I. doesn't compare at all to having a real person, and with as much as this game depends on co-op you'd be stupid not to play with a real person. I've heard some people complain about the split screen, but me and my sister had no problem on my 27-inch non-HDTV so I don't see what the problem is.
After playing the demo, this just turned into a day one purchase for me. Now the only problem is getting through RE4 before this one comes out (I wasn't that big a fan of it beforehand, but after playing RE5 I don't know if I can go back). |
I tried the demo online and couldn't get another person for co-op. Otherwise looks like a new RE4 with curb-stomping.
|
Yeah it pretty much is RE4 with better graphics. I was used to the mgs4 controls so I tried to shoot while walking without thinking.
I played with a person who knew what he was doing and it was pretty fun. Then I played a second time with a person who had no clue and got me killed right away. Although it seems like we can't send invites through the demo, we just have to connect through any random person. Not sure if I'll buy this day one, I'll eventually get it but by the time that happens everyone will have stopped playing co-op which won't necessarily be a bad thing since re5 is suppose to be a single player experience like RE4 unless the entire game will be co-op which kinda kills the "horror" experience and turns it into just another slow action game |
Sony really do need to sort out an invite system for games, it's something I sorely miss from Xbox whenever I even think about playing with a mate (something I've hardly done because I tend to get games for the 360 just because I know it'll be doable without a massive headache).
|
Quote:
|
Ah I see, Not sure how I missed it. You're suppose to set the co-cop settings as "partner" then host a game and invite by going into the XMB like you said

So, Noby Noby Boy has been out since thursday. Anyone got it?
For those of you not familiar with it, it's made by Keita Takahashi (or something like that), the madman creator of Katamari Damacy. It's not really a game, as there's no challenge, no objectives or anything like that. You just have to stretch the dog creature and make a similar (but gigantic) dog in space grow. And it's only 3€ or 5 dollars. And not only that, the game supports XBM photograhing, video grabbing and uploading to YouTube and custom soundtrack. What's not to like? |
Yeah, I just tried it out yesterday, and it's definitely a fun little toy. People who like some structure in their games may not dig this, but it's definitely fun to just play around with. And it definitely has that same quirky Katamari feel, so if you're a fan of that game's style then you'll probably at least enjoy the presentation of this game.

Has anybody installed some version of linux on their console at all? I heard that there are a couple of emulators out that work fairly decent now, but I guess I just haven’t been paying very good attention to the whole PS3 homebrew scene and don’t know too much about it.
I just installed a 320gb hard drive, and wouldn’t mind playing some old school games on the big screen with a wireless controller… |

The second part of that story is actually talking about the new Resistance 2 map pack (which you will have to pay for), so I guess that means maybe all the Warhawk stuff might be free. Either way, it sounds interesting, so I can't wait to hear more details about it.
|
Seems Eurogamer got a little confused, the whole lot is about new Resistance 2 DLC, including the free stuff. Which does make a lot more sense with talk of grey tech, and the whole Insomniac name-drop. Shame, some free DLC for Warhawk would have been ace.
|
Aw, well that's lame. I had only heard about the map pack for Resistance 2, so I guess the free stuff is still good news, but like you I would have preferred some more stuff for Warhawk.
Speaking on Warhawk though, I wonder what are their future plans for it now that Dylan Jobe and a few other Incognito staff members have left to form their own studio. From everything I've read he seemed to be the driving force behind the game, but I think Incognito is still a competent enough studio to get things done even without him. |
Rumour time: FFVII could be heading to the PSN as a PSOne download, as it's just hit the Japanese PSN store apparently:
Quote:
|
I'm pretty sure you can pick that up for less than a tenner on eBay and who on Earth doesn't already have a copy of FFVII anyway?
An HD update or a PSP version I could understand but a straight re-release seems pretty pointless to me. |
Quote:

Quote:
http://i41.tinypic.com/6dqotc.png Other than that, it's also the convenience of having it on your hard drive. |
Gosh, I had no idea it was so expensive these days. I found a copy using Google shopping for £15 but if it's selling for so much in America I can understand the re-release I guess.
Still, I'd rather have a PSP version. |
Quote:
|
Most (all?) PSone originals can be copied over to the PSP.
|
I didn't know that. As I don't have a PS3, my PSN username never gets used for anything more than downloading demos. I had no idea you could download PSOne originals for PSP, they really ought to publicise these things better.
Would I need a PS3 to download it at all or can I do it through my PC or direct onto the PSP? |
Quote:
Actually, thinking about it, I was under the impression that the PSN store that you can now get on the PSP (proved you have up-to-date firmware) allowed you to purchase the same games you could buy on the PS3, which would get around your problem. |
Cool, I'll look into it. It's been a while since I went online with my PSP (It's been a while since I used it full stop) so it's entirely likely they added that functionality and I just haven't checked.
If not, I know a few people with PS3s so I guess I can get one of them to download it for me then transfer it to my memory stick. Additional Spam: Aha, a quick trip to the PSN website shows that you can download stuff to your PC then transfer it across to a PSP using their Media Manager software. |
A little rumour that could get Skills all excited: it looks like SCEA has registered the trademark for the name Starhawk, which could be related to a rumour that was floating about of a space-based Warhawk follow-up. [ source ]

Target has released a package that contains the 80gig PS3 hardware, plus Motorstorm GH edition, plus Resistance GH edition, for the same price of $399. Sony isn't lowering the price of the PS3, but retailers have been taking matters into their own hands for at least a year, offering things such as free blue-ray movies (Target did this recently), or $50 gift cards (Target and Wal-mart both did this, and it first appeared a long time ago now). Does Sony need to lower the MSRP of their console, or will these retailer-specific tactics work to sell hardware? (Seeing the pack with 2 free games, both great - not like the 360 pack with Indiana Jones and Kung-Fu Panda :( - really makes me consider a purchase...)
|
Couple of good deals worth noting this week up on the PS Store. First, Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fist of Plastic is free this week. Just go to the Sprint icon under the New Releases section and then download the game. Second, Bionic Commando: Rearmed is only $5 this week (I believe it's the same for the XBLA version as well), which definitely seems worth it if you haven't bought it by now (like me).
|
Am I the only one thinking that Rag doll kung fu is simply the most surprisingly fun game. I just couldn't resist a free download of a FULL game and since I wasn't expecting much, I just had a blast playing it with my bro. The animations for the characters were simply hilarious.
I didn't check all the playing options but is it possible to send invites? |
Haven't played the game yet to check for myself, but I thought I read somewhere that there was no online multiplayer for this game, which would make it kind of a ripoff at full price.

Help guys,
I wanna install Linux (ubuntu or whatever) in the system. I have a 60gb and i wont do anything yet but get all my media into my 1tb exhdd. Also, when I format my system. its obvious that I have to back it all up but what will happen to games that was shared by another person ? |
