Wii Zapper + Zelda Crossbow Training

Hey guys, how cool is the Wii Zapper gonna be? Man, I can't wait to play Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles on this...

Wait, what?
IGN: Zelda Crossbow Game with Wii Zapper

No screens as yet, but for the lazy who can't be bothered clicking the Link (OMG pun), the Wii Zapper is going to come out in the Americas on Nov 19th with the price of $19.99. This includes the Wii Zapper AND a light-gun style Zelda game.

As from the Nintendo Press Email:

The software is based on the hugely popular Legend of Zelda® series and provides a perfect demonstration of the way the Wii Zapper could be used in other games. The Wii Zapper casing houses both the motion-sensitive Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk™ controllers in a single unit for precision targeting. It goes on sale Nov. 19 at an MSRP of just $19.99.

“The Wii Zapper combines our remarkable controllers into one housing with a classic style reminiscent of arcade-style games,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Both veteran and first-time players will find it brings a whole new dimension to games where targeting is key and provides even more exciting game-play experiences.”

Link’s Crossbow Training drops players into a world in the style of The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess. Players assume the identity of hero Link, who progresses through a series of tests to perfect his crossbow marksmanship. Start with stationary bull’s-eyes and graduate to moving targets before defending Link against all kinds of enemies.

Third-party publishers have lined up to support the Wii Zapper. EA’s Medal of Honor Heroes™ 2 lets players take World War II into their hands with the Wii Zapper. The game features an all-new Wii-exclusive Arcade Mode that offers accessibility to gamers of all skill levels, a full single-player campaign and support for up to 32 players in multiplayer. Capcom’s Resident Evil®: The Umbrella Chronicles reveals the back story behind the fall of the Umbrella Corporation by exploring locations from Resident Evil 0, 1, 2 and 3, as well as new never-before-seen locations like Umbrella’s stronghold. One or two players use the Wii Zapper to take aim against a horde of zombies in first-person perspective. SEGA’s Ghost Squad™ lets players replicate the arcade light-gun experience at home with the Wii Zapper.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.

I'm gobsmacked at the fact that Nintendo is about to start "milking" one of their most respected franchises ever. Is that fair to say or am I completely wrong?

Discuss or vent your spleen (in a constructive and well behaved manner as always) :p.

Slayer X Sep 10, 2007 10:18 PM

Well if people are dumb enough to buy this kind junk then of course Nintendo is going to keep on making it. They're 100% in the business for the money, which isn't really wrong, it's just that this isn't much of a surprise from Nintendo.

On another note I AM looking forward to using the Zapper with RE:UC, probably the only Wii attachment I'll ever own too. I know what I just said in my last paragrapg, however of the bunch of add-ons already, the Zapper seems to be the first useful one yet.

Lukage Sep 10, 2007 11:00 PM

The Zapper was $20 to begin with, why complain?

Also, released a year after Twilight Princess and the console, how cute.

The Plane Is A Tiger Sep 10, 2007 11:34 PM

I wouldn't call this "milking" at all. The Wii Zapper was already going to cost $20, so a free Zelda mini-game is a pretty nifty surprise. It's not like they're releasing a seperate Zelda arrow game at the same time as the Wii Zapper to encourage you to buy both.

Infernal Monkey Sep 11, 2007 03:48 AM

Zelda? Nobody likes Zelda, that's why it failed and Nintendo went bankrupt. Where's Yoshi's Safari 2: THE REVENGE OF YOSHI'S SAFARI (??) Or Hogan's Alley 2: HOGAN'S NEWER, SLIGHTLY BETTER ALLEY (??) Or Duck Hunt 2: Neo-cyber-X Duck Hunter Zero 2037 FIFTEEN CAMELS (??) Phoenix Games should jump on board, then we'd finally get a sequel to Shoot 7 Games, Shoot 8 Games. Nintendo Australia will probably charge eighty thousand dollars for this bundle, and I can't see myself spending eighty thousand dollars on a training game not approved by Dr. Kawashima's hilarious floating noggin.

Yes, give us Duckhunt: Zer0 H0ur, or I'll boycott your console and THEN you'll be sorry!

Note the subtle sarcasm in my first line :p. SO SUBTLE IT WORKS!!!

Well, it's gonna seem weird playing a crossbow game with a gun. Since it's using the Twilight Princess engine exclusively for the Wii, I hope they spice up the graphics ala Smash Bros Brawl Zelda stage.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Sep 11, 2007 07:33 AM

Hahahaha, I just looked up the Wii Zapper on Google.

Seriously, is anyone going to pay $20 for a bit of plastic that holds the controllers together? I thought one of the great features of the Wii was supposed to be that the two parts of the controller were individually motion sensitive? If they're connected like that, surely you lose a lot of functionality. Nintendo are essentially reducing the amount of control you have, thereby having an excuse to make even simpler games and they're charging people for the pleasure.

I don't think they could confirm their status as the gimicy toy console any better if they tried at this point.

Infernal Monkey Sep 11, 2007 07:37 AM

Well people paid $20 for a horizontal stand for their PS2, so anything's possible. :(

And sometimes about a $100 on a rare Xbox 360 faceplate. I think wii fans will buy the peripheral regardless.

Is the Wii Zapper even comparable to a "real" light gun? I mean, the remote controller isn't even capable of being used as a precise aiming device, so isn't the whole concept of the "Wii Zapper" flawed from the start?

I think they might be able to pull off somewhat decent aiming, but the complex algorithm required for GunCon-like precision would probably require the second Gamecube to be unlocked, and we all know that Nintendo will never give away the secret key for this.

EDIT: Ohshi, this is a first party title. GunCon-precision in Link's Crossbow Braining Age Training Tame your Braining in Seconds a Dairy confirmed.

FatsDomino Sep 11, 2007 04:53 PM

You guys do know that there are accelerometers in both the nunchuk and the remote, right? When tethered together firmly in place by a piece of plastic that allows for a constant two points of a constant distance developers can rely on that to do new and interesting things concerning positioning, movement, and gesture. BUT LOL 20 DOLLA, ACER, IT'S DAMB HOO GONNA BUY DAT. Yeah, why don't you wait and actually try it out. Oh and who knows, Link's Shotgun Madness might even turn out to be half decent. =/

Solis Sep 11, 2007 05:10 PM

Is that really going to be of use to any developer? That just means they can't allow for independent motion of the two inputs. All it's doing is limiting the movement of 2 devices...seems like a step BACKWARDS from what the Wii should allow for.

FatsDomino Sep 11, 2007 06:00 PM

Who says every game needs movement of two independent devices? Who says every shooter will need the Wii Zapper? It's an option for developers to take and if they take it in the right way some very interesting things could happen.

VitaminZinc Sep 11, 2007 11:12 PM

I thought the zapper thing was going to come with RE:UC?

Oh well. I guess I'll get it and have Zelda... ... No worse than getting Wii Sports for free.

PsychoJosh Sep 12, 2007 02:02 AM

So... you're controlling a crossbow... with a gun handle.

That makes no fucking sense at all. It's like announcing a steering wheel peripheral, and the first game that comes out that uses it? A scuba-diving sim.

FatsDomino Sep 12, 2007 08:00 AM

Somehow I feel the translation won't be as warped as you think, Josh. =/

I like how your analogy is the dumbest thing I have read on the entire forums.

What do you do with a gun? Aim it around to shoot things. What do you do with a crossbow? Aim it around to shoot things. It makes sense.

Rock Sep 12, 2007 02:17 PM

This totally looks like the type of crossbow Link would be using, yeah.

Too bad the Zapper won't allow for cool crossbow action like manual reloading and drawing with separate controllers.

FatsDomino Sep 12, 2007 02:24 PM

Well Rock you can always pretend loading it if it means that much to you. =)

DBCE Slayer Sep 12, 2007 03:57 PM

I'd say the zapper is more for games that use actual guns. I'll be getting this purely for Umbrella Chronicles. Although in Gears, the Torque Bow was essentially a crossbow with a pistol grip. :eye:

No it doesn't, they're handled in two completely different ways. A bow you need two hands to handle and a gun you just need one. It makes no sense at all why they didn't just make a game where you use a gun peripheral, for, you know, actually shooting stuff with a gun.

Oh, they had auto-crossbows in medieval times now?! I did not realize this! Did they have infrared laser scopes too?! It looks like they did! Geepers!! :o Those Hylians sure are advanced!!

Have you actually seen the Wii Zapper? It is made to be held with two hands, unlike previous light guns. Don't even use that argument. The Wii Zapper is better suited to match the way that you would a crossbow then to how you would hold a revolver.

Also, what about the rifle used in Ghost Squad? Is that not also meant to be held with two hands and to be butted up to your shoulder, much the way that a crossbow is?

Please, actually think before you talk next time because what you say doesn't make any sense.

The fact that it is auto reload is does not matter. The basic design and the way that it is used is exactly the same whether or not you have to reload it by hand.

Oh, dear me... I was in a mall yesterday and thought I saw third-party renditions of gun handles for the Wiimote and forgot completely about this thing. I thought those were "zappers" too. My bad.

It doesn't look at all appropriate for a bow and arrow setup. :eye: Wouldn't it be way more logical to just hold the Wiimote out in front of you while pulling the nunchuk close to your chest? In fact, what purpose does this thing serve at all beyond just being a 20 dollar hunk of plastic? It definitely doesn't work for a game like this in which you use a bow and arrow, and I think it would've worked just fine without this useless thing, but obviously that would've made too much sense for Nintendo's "if it's not broken, break it" policy.

Good thing this isn't in reference to a CROSSBOW Training.

I still agree with Skills in that this would be the perfect chance for releasing Duck Hunt.

Congle line of abuse. Or is that conga-line. Or congaline. Sep 14, 2007 10:27 PM

I know it's a moot point now, but I think josh was confusing a regular Bow and Arrow with a Crossbow. Looking deeper in the way he was describing his issue with the zapper, it would seem this was the case, but tragically this is still MOOT.

FatsDomino Sep 15, 2007 12:43 AM

When josh can sit back and calmly reason things and then speak (which will mean he might not make these stupid mistakes as much) and then makes such a mistake I'll give him the benefit of a doubt. Until then he's just a tard as usual and trying to wrap yourself around his thinking patterns is a waste of time.

Link returns from The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess to pick up the Wii Zapper and take aim at a host of targets in this shooting-gallery-style game.

* Anyone can pick up the Wii Zapper and become a master marksman in the quick-play shooting galleries of Link's Crossbow Training. Dozens of fast-paced stages offer a wide variety of game play, from shooting stationary targets to defending a supply wagon from onrushing hordes of enemies. Multiplayer modes let players and their friends share a Wii Zapper to shoot for the high score.

* Link's Crossbow Training comes bundled with the Wii Zapper. After a few rounds of Link's Crossbow Training, players will be more than ready to pick up any of the future Wii Zapper titles, like Medal of Honor Heroes™ 2, Ghost Squad™ and Resident Evil®: The Umbrella Chronicles.

Using the Wii Zapper: The Wii Zapper requires the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, housing both in a comfortable and intuitive frame. The control stick on the Nunchuk controls player movement (on stages that allow player movement), while simply aiming the Wii Zapper moves the targeting reticule on the screen. Pulling the trigger fires Link's crossbow. By aiming off screen, players can turn Link to face in a new direction (again, on stages that allow this).

Link's Crossbow Training contains three basic game styles: target shooting, defender and ranger. There are 27 stages in total, and these categories represent only generally how each individual stage operates. Each stage's goal is to earn the highest score possible within the time limit. All rounds can be played with multiple players: Players pass the Wii Zapper around and then play one at a time and compete for the high score.

Target Shooting: In target-shooting rounds, players shoot bull's-eyes as they pop up on the screen. In early stages, targets are stationary. As the game difficulty increases in later levels, the targets move. Hitting the center of the bull's-eye nets more points, and hitting targets in succession without missing earns combo multipliers. Link can aim anywhere on the screen.

Defender: In defender rounds, players remain stationary but can look and aim in all directions - sometimes even in a full 360 degrees - by aiming off screen. Hordes of enemies assault Link, and he must fight them off. These battles have a great deal of variety, from fighting off skeletons in a desert to defending a wagon from boar-riding Bokoblins.

Ranger: In ranger rounds, players can move throughout the level using the control stick and aim anywhere they want by aiming the Wii Zapper wherever they want to look. In these missions, Link storms enemy encampments, fights his way through a forest and seeks out his foes while exploring the environments.
I still think it's stupid that they're using Zelda for this, another Mii game or a revival of one of their many forgotten NES/SNES era light gun games probably would have suited it better. But Ranger mode sounds like it could be pretty rad. :] Also where's the 'shoot Tingle out of the sky' mode? Tsk.
