Legos vs. Lincoln Logs

As a kid, we all had our building toys. The big two were Legos and Lincoln logs. Which ones were your preference, and why? What sorta things would you create?

For me, it was always Legos. Lincoln Logs would bore me, whereas Legos had the variety to keep me hooked and interested for years. I never made too much amazing stuff with Legos, since I'm not really a hands-on guy, but I still had fun.

By the way mods, if this thread is better suited elsewhere, feel free to move it.

EDIT:

Crap, I hit submit before I could create a poll...

I never really played with Lincoln Logs. I think the only time i played with them was when I went to my grandmother's house. Legos, (or Mega Blocks and Duplo blocks, what ever available) were my favorite things to play with, next to the mud in the back yard. With Legos i'd make symetrical little houses, or with my Mega Blocks I'd make symetrical little houses or on occasion some humanoid structure I called a Power Ranger.

Since I've never even heard of Lincoln Logs, I'd have to go with Legos. I used to play them all the time back when I was 6 or 7. Can't recall what I used to build, but I'm quite sure I never really did follow the instructions in the sets. But, I hate what they did with the Legos nowadays though. They seem so...overly commercialised.

Bernard Black Sep 1, 2007 10:17 AM

All I had available was Lego, but I used to make tonnes of stuff with it. Aeroplanes, houses, cars, trains. I don't know (since the stuff was bought for me) but I'm assuming they used to come in sets with specific pieces of a wing or a window, and we just had a massive box stuffed full of different sets. I remember specifically asking for a set with a witch because it also came with a lego dragon; that was the only part I actually used to play with.

Temari Sep 1, 2007 11:14 AM

I mostly used Legos when I was young, but I went through this huge Lincoln Log (I could be wrong, but weren't they actually 'Linking Logs'?) faze, where I made some of the craziest houses. After making those houses though, I realized there wasnt too much to do with them, so I always went back to legos. Honestly, I still have this HUGE box of legos somewhere around my house... I hope to keep those though, because today's legos... suck. They're either really bad sets or they're 'megablocks'... seriously, legos are supposed to be small.

Legos win by a longshot. This isn't even a competition.

When I was little I already had a big trunk full of Legos left behind by my brother, and basically any money I had went towards buying more sets. Unfortunately the prices have gotten a bit ridiculous in recent years, especially with so many of the new series being based on movies (Harry Potter, Batman, Spider Man, etc.), so I stopped buying them. Until I moved away from home last year I still played with them often, though. Building random stuff helped when trying to concentrate on thinking up topics for assignments and such.

The only place I ever saw Lincoln Logs was at my elementary school's daycare program, and I thought they were pretty dumb. They were too restrictive when trying to build something and usually worked best when incorporated into Lego designs. Even Tinker Toys were more fun than Lincoln Logs.

QFT.

This one time when I was like 12 or something, I made the Junon Cannon out of legos. It even moved around a little. A shame I never got pics :(

I agree, but I seriously have some friends who swear by Lincoln Logs. I just had to have the internet backing me up on this one ;)

BlueMikey Sep 1, 2007 11:39 AM

At my house, it was all about the Legos.

The best Lego set that I had was the monorail.

So badass.

I think most of the sets I can remember having were in the space set, though I seem to remember when I was younger then that, having some kind of forest or Robin Hood type set.

peeack Sep 1, 2007 12:03 PM

Why do you guys call it 'Legos' I've always heard / called it 'Lego'. No S. But yeah, being an Aussie kid the choice is pretty obvious!

Pirate Lego > all.

gidget Sep 1, 2007 12:18 PM

Legos were my favorite. I used to build huge cities in my living room with them. I never liked the sets that were intended to build only one scene, though.

Summonmaster Sep 1, 2007 12:58 PM

Considering I'm Canadian and didn't even know what Lincoln Logs were or looked like before I saw this thread, the choice was clearly Lego. Although I didn't play with them much I still fooled around for a bit. I actually wanted to get more into Kinex with all the cool interlocking pieces, but I was never much of a "toy" child, preferring my handhelds over any Lego or Kinex set.

Void Sep 1, 2007 01:12 PM

fuck lincoln logs. this should be legos vs. k'nex.

legos were the greatest and most widespread. but you could make some pretty cool vehicles and things that exercised dynamic physics with k'nex.

Kimchi Sep 1, 2007 02:55 PM

What the hell is Lincoln Logs? [Sarcasm]

Legos hands down.

nuttyturnip Sep 1, 2007 03:24 PM

How is this even a contest? The only Lincoln Logs I've ever seen have been at old people's homes (for grandchildren) and doctors' offices. Has any kid seriously played with them since 1970? Lincoln Logs are so restrictive, since about all you can build is some sort of log cabin.

Single Elbow Sep 1, 2007 03:28 PM

Obviously Legos here, since I combined lego themes at that time. Pirates, Knights, Modern, etc, all in one roof.

Those were the days.

Syndrome Sep 1, 2007 04:11 PM

Beside Lego, me and my friends always played with Kapla when we were kids.
Kapla

We always built towers high as hell, or huge pyramids. Or castles.

Vemp Sep 1, 2007 05:48 PM

Lincoln Logs? I never heard of those. All we had were Legos and Duplos.

Poll has been added and my choice has been made.

Golfdish from Hell Sep 1, 2007 09:18 PM

All the cool kids played with Legos. I seriously don't know anyone who played with Lincoln Logs.

Aw, no love for Construx?

knkwzrd Sep 1, 2007 09:23 PM

I had a shitload of Star Wars Lego, but what I was really into as a kid was K'Nex.

YouTube Video

So much better than Lego.

Muzza Sep 1, 2007 10:08 PM

Lincoln...Logs? o.0"

Lego for me by far. I didn't play with them that much, but you know...at least I've heard of them.

Toy cars ftw, though.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 1, 2007 10:47 PM

The choice isn't even close. I had both as a kid, but it's obvious Lincoln Logs are only good for making houses. The most exciting thing was when you switched up the pieces on one wall to insert a window.

Legos, on the other hand, could build anything. Houses were still possible (and they evern had specific window pieces), and you could build cars, spaceships, walls, forests, boats, and other things, plus you had Lego people to play with on your creations. A good Lego creation I would leave together for weeks and play with it, whereas a good Lincoln Log creation would be fun to knock down minutes later.

brknredcrayon Sep 2, 2007 12:31 AM

I had two big buckets of Legos as a kid.

Blacktron and Mtron were my favorites. Intergalactic space wars galore !!

Haha, that's pretty rad. Lego should have released a Lincoln themed set to crush America's National Toy! It was all about Lego for me, I'd build all these shitboxes out of the smaller shitboxes and pretend they were cars and everything. "LOOK AT THIS DINOSAUR" and it'd just be like four green blocks joined together. I even had ONE HUNDRED PERCENT UNOFFICIAL Lego town mats that had flat buildings and so forth. Oh my yes. Later I got into Mechano, which was the 'mature' version of Lego, but here's a secret! Mechano was shit!

RainMan Sep 2, 2007 02:19 AM

Lincoln logs suck ass. Lego's are incredible. What else is there to say?

Infernal Monkey Sep 2, 2007 02:25 AM

Completely useless post, but it's always freaked me out that American's say 'Legos'. It's always just Lego here. If you have some Lego, you have some Lego! Wait. Kind of like pronouncing Seegah as Saygah.

HOT HITS TODAY, HOT HITS ON THE WAY!

Krelian Sep 2, 2007 05:13 PM

THE PLURAL OF LEGO IS LEGO.

And Lincoln Logs are fucking lame. Denmark forever. Best sets were Blacktron, Pirates and... That one early-90s underwater scifi set. God I loved that.

(Blacktron was the one with the monorail, yeah?)

The Wise Vivi Sep 3, 2007 07:16 PM

Lego rock! Lincoln Logs were cool until I found out about Lego. My brother was really addicted to Lego as well.

We used to make a Lego version of Civilization. Actually it got really intense and we had a great system going. We also used to build forts and stuff and have 12 or so Lego guys hiding in each one. Then, we pitted them against each other about 20-25 feet apart and put together a Lego ball or square and used that to throw at each other's forts. Whoever killed all the guys in the other fort first won.

It was a lot of fun.

Chaotic Sep 4, 2007 04:45 PM

I didn't really play with Legos a whole lot when I was little, but I never played with Lincoln Logs, so it beats that.

Either way, I prefer Legos since there alot more room for creativity as opposed to the linear designs of the logs.

PiccoloNamek Sep 4, 2007 05:14 PM

Guys... what about Tinkertoys?

Tinkertoy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I played with these things all the damn time when I was a kid.

nazpyro Sep 18, 2007 01:25 PM

LEGO ftw. I still have dozens of buckets of Lego pieces in my basement somewhere. I love it. As I grew older though, I moved on to K'NEX, and I have every important large set that was released before I entered high school. Meanwhile, Lincoln Logs were crap.

Also, there was this other construction set brand I used to play with a long time ago too. I can't remember what it was called, but it consisted of colored triangular pieces that could interlock with each other to create awesome. <3
