Kiki Kai Wor..wait, Heavenly Guardian? (It's pretty much a new Pocky & Rocky)

As it turns out, Kiki Kai World is not the Kiki KaiKai (Pocky and Rocky) sequel that was announced and cancelled. However, it is by the same developer, is "very similar" to the cancelled game, and is more of a "spiritual successor," says UFO.

"To make a long story short, Taito, who is now owned by Square [Enix], had some issues with us and we had to let the title go," said a company spokesperson.

The new game will be released in the US on both the PlayStation 2 and Wii. The PS2 version is currently scheduled for a December release, with the Wii version arriving early next year. The game will also be released on both platforms in Japan.
skeleton powers.

These are some of the screens that were originally released when they announced it last year, expect some sprite changes and shit I guess. It looks like BEST GAME.

The same publisher's also announced an American release of [insert the really long Japanese name here], which turns into The Monkey King. A sequel to Cloud Master, which was a household name in the eighti-oh.

This one's Wii exclusive.

Monkey King's listed for November 1st, Kiki Kai's late December (for PS2).. oh wait that's in the lump of text I quoted anyway. They're both thirty bucks. You should support a game starring a GFF member, okay! UFO seem to be pretty dodgy with their release dates though, so who knows. Also no word on PAL releases, buuuuut 505 Games doooo tend to pick up a lot of the same games UFO publish. So basically, late 2009 here we come!

Even if it's not the cancelled game, this is awesome news. Fuck. Yes.

surasshu Sep 1, 2007 01:02 AM

Jesus! That Pocky & Rocky game looks so good it can't possibly, possibly suck! Man. Pocky & Rocky was awesome. I want to make a game like that. So much <3 The only thing I hope is that they make the background and foreground a little less jarring... That just looks a bit ghetto. But I'm nitpicking...

The Monkey King game looks pretty dodgy. Which might actually be awesome, too... YEAH

Those umbrellas with tongues are the best thing since ever. They better keep that enemy, I mean what else can you possibly come up with that's more awesome than the umbrella with one eye and a tongue, and a foot? Really!

map car man words telling me to do things Sep 1, 2007 04:05 AM

Why do they look like browser based flash games ;_;

Infernal Monkey Sep 1, 2007 06:04 AM

Because beeccaaauuse! There's an enemy who seems to cut the poor girls clothes off, and that's the work of that blasted internet right there!

They look like SNES games.

But hey, at least the gameplay looks g-

No, wait, you shoot walking fish, what the fuck is that. It's the cancer that's killing the games industry, that's what it is.

Gechmir Sep 1, 2007 06:42 AM

I just came. And went. And came back again =D Best news since bread first got sliced.

LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. Maybe I'll buy a Wii... Have yet to buy any of the nextgen system and RE4 for the Wii looks soo secksah :(

I've never played any of the Pocky and Rocky games, but I'm very interested in this title.

Because I've never played them though, will I not understand the storyline? I know it's a bit early to be asking this question..

Go download the roms now. Rocky is the coolest character ever. And the games are tons of fun. :3

Sword Familiar Sep 1, 2007 11:52 AM

Heh, funny how they only translated the "world" part in "奇々怪界"(KiKiKaiKai), making it "KiKiKai World". Sounds weird. Great "news" though (heard about it a while ago). I'm looking forward to this.

I heard somewhere it wasn't licensed though, anyone have any info on that?

Golfdish from Hell Sep 1, 2007 07:55 PM

I'm happy...More of these types of games are always welcome. I rather liked the old Pocky and Rocky games and Monkey King looks like a good arcade shmup.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 1, 2007 11:06 PM

I am now suddenly quite interested in both of these. Screw saving up money for those big name games every else was hyping up, I'm gonna starting setting aside money for these games.

Elixir Sep 1, 2007 11:31 PM

I'm really glad they didn't throw away this project entirely.

It's also cool watching my money fly out the window.

Monkey King will be pleased.

Monkey King Sep 2, 2007 07:57 AM

Wait, Squeenix owns Taito now? When the hell did that happen? They're like Disney now, except with video games.

It strikes me as a bit lazy to have Monkey King controlled with a sideways Wii controller traditional style, but not to bother adding Gamecube controller compatibility. Still, glad they went with something functional rather than torturing us with something goofy like waving the wiimote up and down to move around the screen.

I have to say, it's uncanny how this showed up right as I started getting into another shmup kick.

Infernal Monkey Sep 2, 2007 08:55 AM

Yeah, Square bought like ninety percent of their shares back in 2005. Taito kinda dropped off the planet shortly after, but now they're on a huge retro revival kick, probably fueled by the bazillions of dollars Cooking Mama has made them~

Rua Sep 3, 2007 08:27 PM

Kiki Kai looks like it would be fun to play. I'll definitely shell out the cash for that when it comes over here. It looks odd so I'll go for it. But looks like I have a bit to wait though from what that arcticle says.

Kairyu Sep 3, 2007 09:47 PM

Oh damn. This will break my personal record of most games bought in one year. But for 30 dollars each how can I say no? That's right, I can't ._.

Anyway, time to refresh my memory and play through Pocky & Rocky 2.

evilboris Sep 6, 2007 07:53 AM

I just hope the ps2 version will play in 480p. Those hires sprites look sexy.

Sword Familiar Sep 8, 2007 12:23 PM

Although, at this point, since it graphically looks a bit too "generic anime style" for me(I liked the original style better), it's not going to matter if its 480p or not. At least not to me it won't. I'm pretty sure it'll be good gaming experience either way. Wouldn't hurt, though.

Isn't it possible to upscale it on the PS3 though, should it not be 480p out of the box?

game_dragon1 Sep 14, 2007 05:00 AM

Hey It looks good I cant wait to see it comes out because I play pocky and rocky on my SNES Emulator at home or on my laptop

Upscaling != native resolution.

Greatest change. GREATEST.

"Hey guys, I got this great idea on how to make our game sell even LESS!"

"Really Bob, how's that?"

"Give it the worst box art since Castle Shikigami 2~"

No wonder I couldn't find any new info on it, thanks Infernal. Still can't find any retailers with this in their system though.

Well three of those at least has the main character in them :(

Infernal Monkey Nov 27, 2007 05:22 AM

They'll probably change it so you play as the skeleton. "Everyone loves skeletons!" "Sir.. well, I.. I don't know if people are going to be too happy about this change!" "But EVERYONE loves skeletons" "Yes sir ;__;" "NO SAYING SMILEYS OUT LOUD IN MY OFFICE"

Infernal Monkey May 20, 2008 04:08 AM

HELLO FRIENDS. IT IS I, BUMPS MCKENZIE AGAIN. :cmb:

So this is out in the Americanada now, ultra budget priced at $15 on PS2 and $20 for the Wii version ($5 extra for wiggle waggle jiggle jaggle hippin' and a hoppin'). There's some still screen art for the introduction story bit which is in Engrish, then AWAY YOU GO.

It's really not too bad, nowhere near the level of Pocky & Rocky, but eh... ultra budget price! The levels are pretty huge and often allow you to explore miles away for secrets and stuff. Move around, shoot the bazillions of smiling enemies (with your magic snowballs). There are certain areas in each level that lock you onto one screen as hundreds of goons fly in from the side, you can rack up some pretty rad combos.

Boss battles have been pretty creative so far. Also brutal. This game fucks you up something shocking. Graphics are, well... crappy. Very, veerrry basic 2D, not up to what those initial screens looked like at all. Some of the later environments are nice though. Music's cheerful and vomits rainbows at you. Fun fact; the game has no save function. Start from the beginning every time. D:

505's picked it up for a PAL release in July, and it comes complete with a much nicer box art.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...9L._SS500_.jpg

But they plan on charging full price, so fuck it. I'll stick with my ugly US Wii box art.

Oh yeah, if you have a PS2 and a Wii (who doesn't have a PS2? MOLE PEOPLE?) get the PS2 one. Wii version merely adds an option of horrific motion controls.

map car man words telling me to do things May 20, 2008 04:21 AM

Sweet ass box art, even if the actual title logo simply looks ass.

I'm confused now, have they removed any mention/relation to Kikikaikai (DEVIL KINGS) or are there simply more characters?

Infernal Monkey May 20, 2008 04:33 AM

The whole thing has changed. There are some familiar enemies, but the game is now about Sayuki the ice princess or whoever she is falling in love with a school boy in town. But she's too shy to tell him. Then one day Sakyuki finds out he's gotten sick (via GOSSIP), and goes on a quest to find the cure. MAYBE INSTANT LOVERS WHEN SHE SAVES THE DAY. There's no mention of WHY everything is trying to kill you along the way. :gonk:

map car man words telling me to do things May 20, 2008 04:42 AM

Awesome. Best love story ever.

Kinda wish they'd kept Pocky & Rocky as unlockables or something :(

Django! May 20, 2008 08:29 AM

Oh man. Super cool.

Been waiting on this for a while.

How old are you?

3D games are a new development, you see. Before all of this Playstationmahbobs and Xboxen, games were in 2D.

Is the US version called Heavenly Guardian? I still have a PS2... somewhere. It's been a DVD player for the past four years or so.

ZeroSlash May 20, 2008 12:57 PM

I got this since I live in americanada a few weeks ago. It's a pretty cool over head shooter. Not as flexible like pocky and rocky 2 but it's solid. I beat one play through on normal and then got another picture show saying how
Spoiler:
he was just paralyzed
and you go through the levels again but with increased difficulty but it took some 2-3 hours to get through the first play through and I was ready to quit for that sitting. The bad thing is there is no saving between levels or during play so I had to kill myself going through my small stock of lives through the first run so I could unlock level select for beating it.

It has a two player co-op play but I haven't played it yet as no one wants to touch something with so much color. (Not enough brown apparently) All in all, it's a great arcade shooter.

It doesn't have good reviews, but then again, most old school arcadey titles don't now days.

"It's too simple" usually translates to "it has a well-defined and unobtrusive game mechanic". People these days are so hard to please.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 20, 2008 03:53 PM

This looks like any one of hundreds of pc shareware shooters from the 90's. What a massive step back in time in terms of game development. That anyone was ever excited about this is odd, that people are still considering paying for it now it's out is beyond belief.

Don't buy shit like this, you'll only encourage them.

Django! May 20, 2008 11:45 PM

Old school arcade games? Seems a bit too entrenched in the old school, but that doesn't mean it's devoid of gameplay or fun.

People said the same thing about Red Star, and that game was good.

But you mindlessly shoot stuff non-stop! It's essentially the same as what makes up the current generations big name games, except it's 2D. :cmb: To be fair, it's not exactly ever going to burn up the sales charts (or even be stocked by most stores), and the publishers are pretty aware of that.

At least, I hope so.
