MegaScrabble Game 3

ZERGRINCH WINS

Ok bingo hounds, it’s time for Game 3 to get underway. As usual, the game starts at 10am. Given the larger than normal amount of players (we’ve got 12 this time, compared to what ended up being 9 last game), this should be over in less than a week.

Each day lasts 24 hours and begins at 10am. I’ll keep this thread updated with the latest scores, and at 10am every day (or close to it, depending on sleep/work) I’ll post everyone’s new tiles to bring their total back up to 14.

Remember:
-POST YOUR WORDS IN CAPITAL LETTERS
-Post your moves/scores in the thread
-Letter/word multipliers only work for the first word(s) played on them (lots of folks make this mistake).
-I go through and change the blanks on the board to italic letters in different font.

I’ll be checking scores/letters for accuracy. If anyone makes a word for which they don’t have the letters, or any other illegal move, they forfeit that turn, and I’ll take the letters off the board if no one has played off them yet.

I just have a few questions before I do anything:

When I play a word, should I update the board?

Does the square in the middle count as a double-word score?

Is there a set starting point?

Yes.

You start on the square in the middle. You didn't ask, but you can take both of your turns at once, or you can take them at different times.

As JOULING does not appear on the official Scrabble tournament word list, Acro-nym does not get 60 points and forfeits that turn (he has one turn remaining today). I removed JOULING and placed PUMPLIKE in its place, at Zergrinch's request.

It's never been an issue before, but I knew there were 2 official Scrabble dictionaries; TWL (which is what we use) is for the US, Canada, Thailand and Israel. SOWPODS is for everywhere but those countries. Since most of the players here (including you, as far as I know) are based in the North America, I chose the TWL dictionary.

Zergrinch Aug 28, 2007 11:27 AM

Did you know JEWISH is not a valid TWL entry? I had to reject this particular word in game 1 in fear of it being declared illegal :p

nuttyturnip Aug 28, 2007 11:31 AM

Neither are BRITISH or ANGLICAN. I have to assume it's because they're proper nouns.

Zergrinch Aug 28, 2007 11:33 AM

Yeah. Apparently TWL doesn't take proper nouns which can be adjectives :P

Yeah, it's my fault. I didn't remember which one we were using (nor did I know the difference) and just took SOWPODS at face value. Ille vita est.

Side note: I don't approve of Zerg placing multiple words and then deciding on one of them to use. I know people sometimes need a visual aid and there may not be a way to moderate it, but it flies in the face of traditional Scrabble rules. (And makes it hard to determine what areas are available.)

EDIT: I've added SPRINGY to the board across the P in PUMPLIKE. That should give me 42.

You have a point, but I'm one of those folks who need a visual aid as well. It's not something I can really moderate, but I can say that if you're not the only person looking at the board, then you shouldn't lay down multiple words. Sometimes I'll lay down a word, then realize I can't make it, so I take it back up again (before I post it in the thread to make it official).

Exactly. Since I couldn't find a way to play on it, there was no point in leaving it open for someone else. That would just be setting myself up to fail. Which I'll probably still manage to do somehow...

As in past games, I'm not mentioning smaller scoring errors I correct here (up or down), because they happen all too frequently. Of course, if you think I made a mistake, you should let me know.

This game is turning out to be very interesting. There's some real competition for the top spot (this could be due to the less than stellar letters of some folks, though).

You must have been too tired to notice you only had one L. TOGGLE is therefore illegal, and you forfeit the turn and points. Since Plarom had already built off of TOGGLE, I left the word on the board, since removing it would have left POURING unconnected to anything.

New letters are up for today; given the abysmal draws of some people (Zerg is looking up, though), I'll remind everyone that you have the option of using a turn to discard some or all of your tiles.

Plarom, please put your words in capital letters on the board. Everyone should double check your remaining letters, because some of you are reporting different letters remaining than what you actually have (Juanzen was way off).

Acro-nym Aug 30, 2007 09:14 AM

I'd like to swap out one O, two Is, and an E.

Zergrinch Aug 30, 2007 09:23 AM

Indeed, things do seem to be looking up!

My first move is SEXTS, putting S adjacent to the O in OUNCE. This forms SEXTS and SO, for a total of 20 points.

My second move places OVEROAKED next to the S I placed, forming OVERSOAKED. This earns 171 points.

I get a bingo for using up all my letters, which is worth 50 points.

Actually, upon further review, I gave you too many points yesterday. The dispute is with the word DAFTER. You gave yourself 28 points; I somehow came up with 26 this morning (the R is a blank, so you lost 2 points), but when I add it up manually now, it's actually only worth 18 points [(2+1+4+1+1+0)x2=18]. First move: AQUATONE off the N in swoon, forming AN and AQUATONE, for 68 points. My blank tile acts as a U.
Second move: SWOOSH attached to haft, forming SWOOSH and HAFTS, for 35 points.
I bingo, for 50 points.

Total points today: 153 points.

Clamjouster Sep 1, 2007 12:40 PM

EVICT(16)
TARGET(21)

total 37 points I guess wich is pretty pathetic nothing better to think of... I almost placed overvoltage but the free Ls didn't help.

nuttyturnip Sep 1, 2007 06:10 PM

Because it's Saturday and I don't want to spend all night staring at the board, I made WAD/EWE/ADO for 30 points, and HAVI[N]G for 24 points.

Smelnick Sep 1, 2007 10:08 PM

ERADICATOR (20)

THEFT (19)

total 39

I am way behind in this game. Stupid grandmother needing laminate flooring lol.

Sousuke Sep 1, 2007 11:03 PM

Another rough draw for today. D:

WEARER, WE, ET, off of TARGET at the bottom, for 19, 13, and 2 points respectively.
QUEUERS, off of WEARER, for 51 points.

Today: 85 points, Letters left: J-O

Total: 451 points~

orion_mk3 Sep 1, 2007 11:35 PM

AJUGAS/TARGETS, using the TARGET already on the board.
ZOWIE using the E in EXECUTER.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 1, 2007 11:52 PM

First move (I can't believe this fits in here):

LAMINATE - 90 (double letter score N, two triple word scores)

NE - 3 (double letter score N)
AR - 2
TA - 2
ED - 9 (triple word score)

Remaining letters: O-A-L-E-I-L

It's also rather uncanny for me considering I just finished putting in a bunch of laminate flooring for my grandmother. also alcohol resides in my blood stream

TheKnightOfNee Sep 2, 2007 03:00 AM

I probably subconciously thought of the word because of your post. So thanks.

Second move: Adding onto the Z in ZIP

LAZE - 26 (double word score)

ctu Sep 2, 2007 04:54 AM

Ok For Today (wile it still is today) :P

BA[N]DICOOT (30)

and I will exchange the letters JOV

nuttyturnip Sep 2, 2007 09:43 AM

New tiles are up for today; tomorrow will definitely be the last day. In order to get more tiles for everyone tomorrow, I added Plarom's tiles back into the mix, since he hasn't been around for a few days. I'll distribute the tiles as evenly as possible tomorrow (so that everyone has roughly the same number), but dividing 54 letters among 11 people won't give anyone many letters.

Zergrinch Sep 2, 2007 10:33 AM

Found a bingo, but not any good places to put it in.

Turn 1: ALTHROP, off the C in activators, forming CALTHROP and AE, for 34 points.

Tiles remaining: FAJITAS

I'll wait till someone gives me an opening :D

Screw that opening, found one that's good enough!

Turn 2: FAJITAS, adjacent to calthrop, forming CALTHROP, OF, and PA, for 40 points.
I bingo, for 50 points.

Total points today: 124.
Total points accumulated: 850.

I guess I won't be able to get 1000 as I wanted to in the first game. It's impossible for me to get 150 points without that bingo bonus on the last day, and I doubt I can repeat that OVERSOAKED monstrosity that got me 176 points in this game :P

Franky Mikey Sep 2, 2007 05:28 PM

I had a bingo, but no opening and it seems nobody is around to give me one. I have to go to bed so I've settled for the following:

SQUEAKER (66) - off the S in QUEUERS
BREED/NEE/ARE/TAD (32) - alongside ERADICATOR

That gives me 98 points, and absolutely no hope of catching up. Not that I had any. :gonk:

Clamjouster Sep 2, 2007 06:18 PM

GOONIE(18)
GYNIATRY(32)

50 points... pretty bad again I can't really think of anything good lately argh...

Sousuke Sep 2, 2007 08:01 PM

I REALLY wanted to play 'FELLATIO', but the only open T didn't really give me any score bonuses. :/ So, for today I've got...

FRIJOLE, off the R in GYNIATRY for 44 points.
TAXIS, spanning from AQUATONE to VENDETTAS, for 20 points.

Sad day today. Only 64 points. Letters left: J-I-L-L-O.

No hope of catching up now. Heh.

Acro-nym Sep 2, 2007 08:53 PM

First play: TYP[H]OON across VARIOUS for 30 points.

Second play: BALSA down through FRIJOLE for 16 points.

orion_mk3 Sep 2, 2007 10:53 PM

ELA[B]ORATING, using the E in HOAGIE.

STATE, using the S in FAJITAS.

I think that's all my letters used, but I suppose I might have made another fatigue mistake (it's been a long day).

nuttyturnip Sep 2, 2007 11:15 PM

Nice bingo, orion.

For today, I made OBOE (12 points) and FLASH/OBOES (44 points). Nothing special.

Smelnick Sep 3, 2007 01:26 AM

I'm sucking this game around

GRIPSACK (23)

JURIED (14)

total is 37

TheKnightOfNee Sep 3, 2007 02:52 AM

First move:

HEALED - 30 (triple word score)

Second move:

LONG - 6
OWE - 6
NET - 3

ctu Sep 3, 2007 08:18 AM

It is getting harder and harder to find places to place words :P

I got

W[A]LR[U]SES (12)

P[R][E]FIX (40)

nuttyturnip Sep 3, 2007 10:41 AM

Letters are up for today, the last day. I distributed the tiles so that the top 5 players have 8 letters, and the bottom 5 players have 9 letters. Yeldarb is the only player with 14 letters (he didn't play yesterday), so he's the only person who can earn a bingo bonus.

Zergrinch Sep 3, 2007 11:10 AM

Second to the last move: MIR on the E in quivered, forming EMIR, AM, TI, and OR. Combined points - 19.

Last move: LARES on the G in origin, forming AQUATONES and GLARES, for a total of 34 points.

It's a bingo, but it doesn't count :(

Total haul of 53 points.

Franky Mikey Sep 3, 2007 11:30 AM

BENE/BO/ER/NA/GET (46) - between GRIPSACK and ELABORATING
FLY/FE (18) - above the E in GOONIE

64 points. Better than Zergrinch, although I didn't use all my tiles. :p

Zergrinch Sep 3, 2007 11:33 AM

You wish to brag about 11 points when I got you beat by 23 times that? :D

Smelnick Sep 3, 2007 07:04 PM

Sucks. The first time I bingo ever is the time when it doesn't count lol

AUSTEREST (18)

AA (4)

total 22

Not my best game ever.

nuttyturnip Sep 3, 2007 07:43 PM

I made TIS/QI (15 points) and EN/NO/DO (11 points). I'll try to update the thread in the morning with the final scores, but it will depend on if I can get through my office's webfilter. They put it up right before I left on Friday, and at that point I could access most of GFF, but I don't know if they've tweaked it since then.

Clamjouster Sep 3, 2007 08:06 PM

SMACKS(13)
YO(5)
SOON(8)
YUP(16)

total for my final day is 42. So That's that.

Sousuke Sep 3, 2007 08:07 PM

Last play, then...

JOULE and EF, using the F in FLASH, for 30 and 2 points.
GLIA, using the G in from ELABORATING, for 10 points

That's 42 today, for a final score of 553. No letters left.

Acro-nym Sep 3, 2007 10:20 PM

I'm playing AXED down through LENITED and ROAR using CALTHROP. I don't have the heart to calculate that.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 4, 2007 01:29 AM

First move: In QUIVERED and various other words

IRIS - 8 (double word score)
AMINO - 6
TIS - 6 (double word score)

Second move: on CLOVER

VIVA - 20 (double word score)

40 points isn't bad for half of my letters being I's

ctu Sep 4, 2007 03:47 AM

This was a good game :P

V[A]DOSE (13)

BAAE[D] (11)

orion_mk3 Sep 4, 2007 06:19 AM

TARIFF, using the T in OUTFAWNS and the I in OEDIPAL.

DRAG, using the D in GODDAMNED and the A in PROTONATED.

nuttyturnip Sep 4, 2007 09:49 AM

Final scores are updated; congratulations to Zergrinch. Poor Face got stuck with some bad letters early on, and wasn't able to recover.

I'm thinking of starting an all-purpose sign-up thread for the future, instead of creating a new sign-up thread for each game. I think I'll be sitting out next game, as my brain needs a rest, but I'll still run it.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 4, 2007 01:25 PM

I may have to sit the next one out if my school work keeps going like the first week. But as long as I have the time, I'll keep doing these. I love Scrabble.

Also, I hate the letter I.

nuttyturnip Sep 4, 2007 02:23 PM

If anyone's interested, I made a chart showing everyone's averages over all the games. I'll link it in the wiki and keep it updated.

Franky Mikey Sep 4, 2007 02:34 PM

Lucky!

Smelnick Sep 4, 2007 03:19 PM

Sounds like a good idea nutty. What would be cool is for each game on the wiki, write out who all played and what their final score was. Maybe even all the words they put down? If you want. I can compile lists for that on thursday and friday. I got nothing better to do.

I dunno, does anyone care about that level of detail? The detailed scoresheets for each game are still linked in the first post of each thread, and the spreadsheet I just made has the final score for each game, and who played. I can't imagine anyone would care what words were played.

Smelnick Sep 4, 2007 04:20 PM

lol. I might do it just out of boredom. lol.

Sousuke Sep 4, 2007 05:04 PM

Great game! I did better than I thought, but still nowhere near as good as Zerg. Congrats! I'm definitely in for the next game, whenever that is.

And nice average you've got there, Face. Lucky indeed.
