NFL 2007-08 Season Discussion

I wouldn't say we're in the offseason anymore, so I'm making a new thread.

At least two marquee quarterbacks are doomed this season, and both are Madden curse subjects. Vince Young graces this year's cover, so he better take out an insurance plan. Meanwhile, Michael Vick probably is the shining example of the Madden curse. His career in the NFL, AFL, CFL, anyFL is probably over, which is sad but he was really cut out for college football.

The Patriots look like Super Bowl locks to everyone but me. I'll withhold judgment until the full A-squad hits the field in a few weeks.

Rollins Aug 21, 2007 11:34 PM

I don't know, I'm really liking the Chargers this year, but then again, it might be because I've been deluged with LT propaganda due to my fantasy football research.

The Patriots are definitely up there though, if Moss returns to his classic form. Be tough to imagine a team as good if that happens.

bighunt Sep 2, 2007 05:14 AM

With the weak NFC and no one team standing out, the Cowboys have a GREAT chance to move further in the playoffs!
a faster D, T.O's rehabbed hand, a two-headed monster of Jones and Barber, and Romo leading the team, they have all the makings of a championship team.

dagget Sep 6, 2007 01:26 PM

Unless I've got my days mixed up, tonight kicks off the season with Colts vs Saints?

Anyways, watching bits and pieces of various ESPN shows while channel surfing has a few people's predictions of it being another Patriots year some say it may be Saints also.

nazpyro Sep 6, 2007 01:47 PM

Tonight's game is gonna be an O-fest and should be a blast to watch. Here's hoping to 60+ combined points (with Addai or Harrison involed in all of the Colts' points). It could be one of the best games all season.

Get well soon, Donald Driver.

Dopefish Sep 9, 2007 08:50 PM

Patriots pooped all over the Jets today. Happy~

I was hoping for this too, but it ended being a shitty game involving Manning being amazing as always and Sean Payton making craptastic calls. Hopefully the season won't play out like this for New Orleans.

bighunt Sep 10, 2007 11:18 AM

1st impressions of the Cowboys game:
45-35? wasn't this supposed to be the Colts-Saints score??
Cowboys' Offense looked great, but they were playing the Giants. Dallas' D looks bad, but w/out Newman, Ferguson, and Ellis, what else can you do but score more than the opposition.

Grundlefield Earth Sep 10, 2007 03:02 PM

Well the Bills did what they usually do. Look good and lead the whole game, then the coaches and players succeed to call and do stupid plays during the end of the game.

They are done for. I predicted 5-11 before the seasons started and I kind of bumped that up during the game watching them play. They have some good young guys. However, they lost 4 main guys in one game for all at least a month. One guy forever, probably paralyzed. I wouldn't be surprised to see them do even worse than 5-11 now. And considering their schedule.

Patriots are pretty much my team now anyway even with living in Buffalo. Don't have the package this year so I had to watch the Bills game yesterday. Yeah, you would think that a person who lives and lived in Buffalo all his life would hate NE, but I don't. Reason being, well that is because my close cousin Gostkowski is their kicker. Pretty sweet that he was drafted on such a good team. Not surprising how much the Patriots grew on me the past year. =D In addition, got tickets to the game in Buffalo coming up. Of course.

Oh and he told me 3 months ago that all the talk about Randy Moss having issues fitting in with the Patriots team was a total joke. Yesterday certainly showed.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 10, 2007 03:41 PM

The Lions beat Oakland yesterday. They almost blew the game, giving up a 17 point lead, but then they actually shut down Oakland late in the game. I haven't seen the Lions finish a game like that in a while, and it's been longer since they've finished a road game like that. Here's hoping they show continuous signs of improvement this year, along with an improved record. If not, well... once the Tigers finish their year, hockey starts back up.

Golfdish from Hell Sep 10, 2007 09:41 PM

Well, that was BS...The Ravens should be 0-0, the Bengals 0-0 and the refs 1-0. Offensive pass interference!?!?!? What the hell? Heap barely touched the guy (if anything, it was defensive pass interference) Good win, refs. All those injuries and all that action, the Ravens coming back from 5 turnovers (LOL @ 1st quarter) and it comes down to a bullshit call like that. And then the guy "makes up" for it with a holding call for our side, because he knew he was wrong.

Of course, we can't blame the refs for us not...oh I don't know...RUNNING THE BALL on 2nd and 3rd instead of barreling it full-speed to a receiver 5 feet in front of you after nearly getting picked on a shit throw!!! That's on Boller's hands...which shouldn't be anywhere near an NFL football to begin with.

Just...complete idiocy taking over a great game at the end there.

Tails Sep 11, 2007 05:08 PM

So I heard the Patriots are cheaters.

Can anyone confirm.

In other news: Jason Elam, still the man, Broncos rule, etc.

Grundlefield Earth Sep 11, 2007 06:24 PM

yeah confirm. Yeah its illegal in NFL. I don't agree with it though. It is just like baseball though, you got to be smarter then that.

dagget Sep 11, 2007 06:26 PM

LEWL Patridiots. Didn't something like this happen last year, that Miami got a hold of a tape of Tom Brady's calls and completely owned them?

Well, he had two defenders to pass between, if he throws it any slower, the balls picked. Heap wants to be considered a top tier tight end in the NFL, you have to catch those passes, especially when it's for the ball game. The refs made a horrible call, which few disagree there. But, not like the Ravens didn't have more than enough chances to put the ball in for the score. Shit calls happen sometimes, the best teams still find a way to win.

As for shitty teams, the Bucs took one on the chin, and the ribs, this past Sunday against the Seahawks. Cadillac will probably miss week two with bruised ribs, but Garcia will play. The thing is, we actually have fairly decent talent. We dominated the first quarter and half of the second. Then, the Seahawks countered and adjusted their gameplan, beat us down, and we never decided to come up with something effective to change anything. Way to go Gruden, out-coached once again.

By the way, if anyone's betting, take the Saints this week. Whenever I attend Buccaneer games (like this Sunday), the Bucs typically lose, as they are 1-7 all-time when I'm in the stands.

Tails Sep 12, 2007 10:31 PM

It's over. Draft picks revoked.

quazi Sep 13, 2007 01:16 AM

This seems kinda silly. If he was in the stands it's legal, but once he's on the sidelines it's not allowed? This article does a decent job of expressing my feelings on the subject: The Patriots really aren't that sleezy. I don't see how it's that big of a deal.

Yes, but everyone I've spoken to agrees he had no business putting the ball in the air at all (and those of us who've endured watching him for years know what kind of spazz he can be). He nearly got picked off on a horrendous throw on 2nd and then the Heap deal happened...After it was established the Bengals weren't stopping the run and it was a matter of "when", not "if" we were running it in with 3 downs to play with. That's what I meant by "complete idiocy"...Not just the ref/Boller/Heap/Billick's playcalling. That was a group effort that still has me shaking my head.

Good luck with the Bucs this year.

Yeah, we'll need a lot more than luck. A new coach and a younger, better team sounds good. We'll be picking in the top 10 more than likely, and Gruden won't be with the team.

I agree completely about how Kyle Boller is a shit quarterback, and the fact that with Willis McGahee (sp?), the Ravens should have just punched the ball in so close to the goal-line. Bad playcalling, completely botched effort all-around by Baltimore.

More than likely, yes. Since I'm going, its almost a certainty that we will lose, BUT...in dramatic fashion. Expect a good game with a tight finish against the Buccaneers.

Louisiana (aside from LSU) and all of its products have just gone to shit this year.

Sorry, dagget.

Yeah, my opinion of New Orleans has dropped about 100 points in the last two weeks.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 16, 2007 06:49 PM

Detroit is now 2-0! Kitna put on a good show today, getting knocked out with an injury early but managing to come back in later. He gained a couple first downs by himself and led some good last minute drives. It stayed a close game, in part because Kitna was out half the game, but also because Detroit and Minnesota combined for 10 turnovers.

Golfdish from Hell Sep 16, 2007 06:59 PM

Holy shit, Browns beat the Bengals in a slugfest (51-45). Awesome...I figured both Pittsburgh and Cincy would be 2-0. Less work for the Ravens to do. We won, but the Jets came to life in the fourth quarter. Too bad AZ and SF are playing really well, they won't be the free wins I thought they were.

I feel bad for people living in NY...Their teams are 0-6 combined. And I actually root for the Giants, so I'm thinking why can't it be the Yankees instead...

(congrats Bucpride)

Guess Kurt Warner's going to become a hot topic again. No one on the Ravens could even stop that guy...Like he was possessed. Or just pissed off we beat the crap out of Matt Leinert for half the game. Those last few possessions were nail biters (for both Ravens fans and AZ fans). We barely held on at the end.

Chargers lose to GB...That's on the brink of insanity after last year.

Dallas vs Chicago is going to be good...Maybe an NFC Championship Game preview.

Strife Sep 23, 2007 04:06 PM

Big day in Philly...

McNabb, Westbrook, and Curtis had an outragous game. I was hoping the Lions could keep the undefeated streak alive too. :(

nazpyro Oct 29, 2007 10:30 AM

Boston's a lil bit money right now. World Series, new look C's, and godlike QB Tom Brady got another 5 TDs in the trouncing of the Redskins, 52-7. Absolutely looking forward to next week's battle of the undefeated teams. Game of the year right there.

Oh, and just have to add in Channing Crowder's quote on the random Giants/Dolphins game in London yesterday:

Quote:

I couldn’t find London on a map if they didn’t have the names of the countries. I swear to God. I don’t know what nothing is. I know Italy looks like a boot. I learned that. I know London Fletcher. We did a football camp together. So I know him. That’s the closest thing I know to London. He’s black, so I’m sure he’s not from London. I’m sure that’s a coincidental name.

That made me all sad inside.

At least the Saints routed Jacksonville. That showing by Brees was reminiscent of last year.

Golfdish from Hell Nov 4, 2007 08:50 PM

Rooting for New England is like rooting for the Yankees in baseball...Adding both Thomas AND Moss is like adding both A-Rod and Josh Beckett to an already-championship calibre team. But I'm from Baltimore and I'll gladly root for anyone who beats up on the Colts.

Suck that, Irsey clan! Steal our goddamn team, will ya...

Lol @ Cincy. I still haven't gotten over the Raven's loss to Buffalo and lightning hit another division rival. What a disappointment (since I root for Cincinnati when we're out of contention...Imagine how their hometown fans feel).

Dopefish Nov 4, 2007 10:41 PM

Also, Adrian Peterson scored 3 TDs and ran for an NFL-record 296 yards. Can't say I'm too stunned, though some people want to crown him the league's best rusher.

Of course, we all know what Dennis Green would say about that:

YouTube Video

This has been an off year for dominant offensive players, with respect to Tom Brady and Randy Moss at their particular positions. I still see LT as the best rusher in the league, but I always felt AP would be worth something someday.

Golfdish from Hell Nov 5, 2007 09:42 PM

I. HATE. FOOTBALL.

I'm going to go find a corner and murmur to myself now.

Ryuu Nov 5, 2007 10:27 PM

Pats won a close one, but the Colts were missing four starters (two on offense and two on defense), so I don't know how things would have ended up had everyone been healthy.

They probably all would have started had it been the playoffs, but a good game all around.

Brady is human... And Moss is still an outstanding player. What's Randy going to do with his contract after this year?

Dopefish Nov 5, 2007 11:52 PM

The Ravens almost gave up enough points to let me lose in my fantasy matchup. PHEW

Little Shithead Nov 18, 2007 11:34 PM

Dear NFL,

Thank you for moving the Buffalo-New England game to sunday night, so that people around the country may watch our fine FOOTBAWL team be otherwise demolished

Also, I'm sure New England is loving the attention that the 3rd stringers are getting

Fuck this shit, just give the Pats the trophy now. The only possible team left in the schedule that could win against the Pats is the Steelers, and even then, I'm not too confident after they lost to the Jets today.

Although it would be pretty lolarious to see two perfect seasons in the same season. A perfect loss-less season for the Pats, and a perfect win-less season for the Dolphins.

Golfdish from Hell Nov 19, 2007 12:29 AM

I call it...The Ravens end the Pats win streak. Because, you know, all that anger has to be building within us and it has to come out sometime.

I also call...The Ravens have a total mindfart and end up being the only win Miami gets this year.

You heard it here first.

Total bullshit call, that Browns game. Oh well, at least Boller looked good. I have to admit he's grown as a QB...and he's better than McNair in his sad state.

Yay...Packers? 9-1. I won't complain about having another competitive NFC team.

Dopefish Nov 27, 2007 07:19 AM

Sad to hear about Sean Taylor. He was another one of the NFL's talented-yet-troubled young players but seemed to have a different streak about him. He was finally coming into his own, leading the NFC in interceptions.

And yeah, the news about ST is all kinds of fucked up. He was only 24. :(

nazpyro Nov 27, 2007 11:25 AM

Patriots actually had a game on Sunday again. Just want to mention one of the most ridiculous things I've seen in fantasy football. Who ever thought Tom Brady would lose you a game this season? His -1 yard kneel at the end of the game was the margin of defeat in my primary league to lose 111.74-111.7. =o

Man, the Sean Taylor death is fucked up. It sounded like he was recovering well as the day progressed yesterday, and then I wake up today to this news. It's sad.

dagget Dec 4, 2007 12:56 AM

That had to be one of the most intense last 8 minutes of a game I've seen in ages. Patriots should not have won that game. Brady must have had a horseshoe surgically implanted in his ass or something.

Lot of bad calls on Baltimore though at the very end. :|

Golfdish from Hell Dec 4, 2007 05:00 AM

We lost...But damn if that wasn't the best MNF game I've ever had the chance to see. All the hype over the Pats, the fact the Ravens suck this year, Boller vs Brady, Ravens D vs Pats O...and we HAD them. THEY WERE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE! And we let 'em off the hook. You could even argue we won, because the defensive coach who called the timeout on 4th down wasn't allowed to call timeout (at least from the explanation I've heard)! And the winning touchdown was clearly a juggle. That's been the story of the season though...Give us back 3 blown calls and they turn into 3 wins.

Kicking from the Ravens 30-something yardline though = LOL

Now if they can do the same against the Colts and maybe pull out a win...Avenge last year's drumming. Stop the losing streak.

RainMan Dec 4, 2007 05:08 AM

Ah, so Mr. Goldfish is from Baltimore. :D

Go Orioles! In regards to the NHL, it was quite a game though, honestly.

Dopefish Dec 10, 2007 01:10 AM

I hate to say it, but I really don't think the Patriots are going to lose a game for the remainder of the season. I hate to say it because I hate to jinx my favorite team into losing against the Jets, Giants, or, god forbid, the winless Dolphins.

Grundlefield Earth Dec 10, 2007 01:21 AM

YOUR TEAM?, and the bills! ok sir. ITS THE JETS. You would think you would know considering what they did in week 1.

Too bad Stephen missed that FG today. oh well 2/3 =D

Dopefish Dec 10, 2007 01:26 AM

Jets, Bills, same thing. They both suck.

Pats at home for both the Jets and Dolphins? I'll go ahead and predict the combined scores being 105-28.

dagget Dec 10, 2007 05:11 AM

I honestly don't think they should have won that game against Ravens. There were tons of questionable calls towards the end. Baltimore almost had it with that IN-FUCKING-CREDIBLE pass that was what, 1-2 yards short of the goal that got caught?

So yeah if Pats didn't lose that one, even though Ravens had their number last week... I don't see Pats losing. Of course it could go all irony like and Miami cockblocks them from having a perfect season, while also not getting skunked this season.

quazi Dec 16, 2007 08:44 PM

So, I'm sure a bunch of you will disagree with me on this, but if you're down 3 points, with effectively no time left and have fourth-and-goal at the 1 yard line, the correct call is to run for the touchdown.

You have about a 75% chance of scoring and winning the game immediately (stats grabbed from TMQ), and if your kicker makes the field goal (about 99% likely), then you've merely avoided losing for the moment. You still have to play overtime in which the team that wins the flip is significantly more likely to win the game.

Brian Billick played not to lose and I can't fucking believe we gave him a 3 year extension.

Dopefish Dec 17, 2007 06:11 PM

Well, if nothing else, the Dolphins beating the Ravens showed that eventually a 0 becomes a 1 somewhere.

So, of course, for the second half of the week leading into Sunday's game, the talk will be all about, "Well, can the Dolphins beat the Patriots and make things right in the world?" The answer, of course, is FUCKING NO.

Here's a comment from someone on boston.com:

"Anyone else starting to feel like the 72 Dolphins are just those guys from high school who never move away from the town and still talk about the homecoming game where they scored 3 touchdowns?"

Draft order is nearly decided: #1 goes to Miami, #2 goes to St. Louis. Atlanta, Oakland and Kansas City will fight over the 3rd, 4th, and 5th spots via... coin flip.

They all ended with the same record, and it was established that they had the same strength of schedule (New York Jets finished 4-12 as well, but strength of schedule was in their favor, thus forcing them in the 6th position).

They're all going to get good picks (possibly), but there's a lot more to be gotten from that 3rd pick than the 5th pick.

Also, Brian Billick was fired by Baltimore.

---------

As for the playoff picks:

WAS vs. SEA - Washington in a close one.

NYG vs. TB - Tampa Bay is the favorite, but I like how New York played against New England. Yes they may be fatigued, but I think they'll play one of their best games. New York.

JAC vs. PIT - This is tough. Both teams are physical, and while the Steelers have more playoff history than Jacksonville, it's the Jaguars who seem to be on top of their game. I'm going Jacksonville, who have probably have the better chance of taking down New England (especially after Pittsburgh's poor effort).

TEN vs. SD - Tennessee doesn't have a chance - San Diego easily.

knkwzrd Dec 31, 2007 08:45 PM

The Patriots will win every game, even the ones their not playing in. Tom Brady will be elected President of the United States.

Wow. Colts and Cowboys both lost. I can't help but see a Pats/Packers Super Bowl now.

I called Pats/Packers about three games in. If it happens, I'll be the happiest boy in ALL the world.

I don't see how even a Patriot fan could be unhappy with a Green Bay win in the Big Game.

I mean, come on. Brett Farve. Packers. BRETT FARVE. PACKERS.

I guess you don't know Boston sports fans. We're greedy assholes who spend lots of money to see our teams and we want them to win every year.

Besides, we want payback for Super Bowl XXXI.

I will ejaculate on the spot if the Packers take the Superbowl.

All over the television.

Brett Farrveerere is the only man I'm okay with having beat the Pats. I've been a fan of his as long as I've been watching football. I grew up loving Sterling Sharpe, too. So Green Bay is like, my backup team.

I don't hate the Pats like a lot of people do, but I can't say they're a favorite. I'm pretty indifferent to them, all in all.

Ballpark Frank Jan 13, 2008 10:01 PM

Patriots are supposed to be the Classy team, right? Well, the way I see it, Farve is the classiest man in the NFL, maybe even America!

So, you know, he should win. Even if the Packers lose, Brett Farve should win.

My friend, a longtime Colts fan, has taken to referring to the Pats as the New England Madden Oh Eights. He once summed the team up thusly:

"It's like this: 'Brady to Moss, touchdown!' over and over. And then there are tears."

quazi Jan 13, 2008 11:46 PM

I don't know if I was imagining this, but it seemed to me as though both the Jags and Colts had an absurd number of botched catches by the receivers. Of course then again, Brady's only two incompletions were perfect passes to his receivers.

I'm a Saint's fan, but will be rooting for Green Bay until the end of the season. Dopefish must go down.
