TOMATOES: LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM?

I know this is an incredibly stupid thread to make. So, straight to the point. I HATE TOMATOES. I hate their colour which is only attractive but not on the tongue. I hate their texture taste which is...bleahhhh...somewhat gross. I hate their smell which tends to make me wanna throw up.

The bad news is that I was born in a tomato-loving family. Yup, I'm the only one in my family who hate tomatoes. As a result, my siblings always tease me when the main menu contains tomatoes, even if the tomatoes are only for garnishes. Of course they use the tomatoes for tools. Usually they pretend to forget I hate tomatoes and 'accidentally' put one on my dinner plate or in my sandwich.

So, tomatoes. Do you love them or hate them?

Musharraf Aug 8, 2007 08:02 AM

When I'm going by plane, I always drink tomato juice. I also like tomatoes in my salad, but not in my suitcase

nuttyturnip Aug 8, 2007 08:30 AM

I'm not a huge fan of raw tomatoes (although they're good on burgers), but I couldn't live without tomato sauce. You'd destroy some of the best part of italian cooking if you got rid of tomatoes.

Dullenplain Aug 8, 2007 08:52 AM

Tomatoes are great, especially the Roma/plum type that you can eat raw. Very tasty. Strange that most people can't stand eating them raw, I don't mind at all, I'm not too fond of most cooked tomatoes as they lost their texture and firmness when cooked.

agreatguy6 Aug 8, 2007 04:38 PM

I really really REALLY hate tomatoes.
But for some reason, I like Ketchup. I mean, I could do without ketchup, but a plain, unadulterated tomato is just.... like squash: disgusting and foreign.

placebo Aug 8, 2007 04:51 PM

hi!
ketchup has not very much in common with tomatoes *IMHO*
And even tomatoes can taste so differently. Dutch tomatoes, fresh quality, taste like sour water (little aroma) compared to Turkish tomatoes.
And ketchup...tastes like ketchup.

Muzza Aug 8, 2007 11:58 PM

I love tomatoes. Especially in sauce form ("ketchup"). Very tasty to me. However, sometimes I can't eat them (usually the small "cherry" tomatoes) because of the acidity; my mouth goes on fire whenever I eat one sometimes. Generally speaking though, they're great. =D

Rydia Aug 9, 2007 12:21 AM

I don't mind them at all. I can eat them raw or cooked, but I think I prefer them raw especially if they're in a salad.

Chaotic Aug 9, 2007 01:23 AM

I only like them to certain extent. If it's in a burger to mask up the taste, then I'd eat it. If it was in a salad or a standalone food, I wouldn't.

>.<

Minoko Aug 9, 2007 02:25 AM

Ketchup is my life blood....I used to drink it out from th packets. I still have packets in my bag just incase I go to a pizza store with no ketchup. I can eat tomatoes in sandwiches or burgers but I can't eat it by itself. I eat salsa but the tomatoes in my favorite salsa are washed after cut then places in a small quantity of vinegar with salt.

Adara Aug 9, 2007 08:41 AM

I really like tomatoes. One of my favorite snacks, especially on hot days, is sliced roma tomatoes with salt and pepper on top. I would eat them every day if I had access to home grown tomatoes because those are delicious. I'll eat tomatoes cooked or raw, but I have to take it easy on tomato sauces because they make my stomach burn.

Guys... Seriously.... Ketchup is NOT tomatoes. Or at least it holds little tomato in today's ketchup. :/

I like eating tomatoes raw in combination with other foods; like burgers or in a chopped up in a salad. My brother-in-law just cuts tomatoes in half and eats them with salt and pepper, just like Adara describes, but I've never liked them like that. My personal favorite way to consume tomatoes is in juice form: you take a glass, put some Tapatio Hot Sauce, some lemon and fill your glass with tomato juice; now THAT is a damn delicious way to get some Vitamin C in your system.

Skexis Aug 9, 2007 01:02 PM

I like things that come from tomatoes, like ketchup or pico de gallo (I love me some pico :3:), but I can't stand sliced tomatoes, by themselves, in a salad, or on a hamburger.

The texture is partly it, but they tend to take away from all the flavor of the cheese and bacon.

Iwata Aug 9, 2007 03:23 PM

I chose the middle option, even though it really isn't the best to reflect my feelings towards the tomato.

I pretty much hate tomatoes most of the time, but their are a few occasions where i don't mind eating em, like if they're on a hamburger on a taco. I also enjoy tomato juice.

But pretty much, i think they're a waste of water.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 9, 2007 07:05 PM

I like the hard flesh of the tomato but I dislike the squishy pulp. Because of this, I usually order hamburgers and subs without tomato.

I'm also not a big fan of ketchup or tomato sauce. Both are too acidic, and modern ketchups aren't very enticing. Homemade ketchups are sometimes better but I could pass on those too. I even skip the ketchup with my fries and tater tots half the time. But I do like ketchup-flavored potato chips, go figure.

On the other hand, tomato is a crucial part of salsa and pico de gallo, which I enjoy. But this is because it contains mostly the harder flesh. The only tomatoes I eat without being cut are cherry tomatoes, and always in salads. They're sweet and the juices are minimal, making them tolerable.

Shorty Aug 10, 2007 12:45 AM

I prefer eggplant over tomatoes (same family) but either or, doesn't matter. All veggies/fruits are pretty much on the good side of my dietary preference.

Little Brenty Brent Brent Aug 10, 2007 12:55 AM

I love fresh tomatoes. I've grown them since my dad taught me about gardening as a kid, and there are very few things that are as sweet and delicious as a fresh tomato picked from the vine.

Arkhangelsk Aug 10, 2007 01:41 AM

There are two things in food that I really, really dislike: tomatoes and onions.
Now granted, onions are waaaaaaaaay worse for me than tomatoes, but I still don't like them.

However, I can 'psyche' myself out and manage to eat them in certain situations, like if they're pureed (ie: salsa, tomato sauce) or very thinly sliced on pizza margherita. It's mostly the texture that I have a problem with than anything else.

When I was younger I wouldn't eat anything red, so I've come along quite a bit since those days ;).

LaMenina Aug 10, 2007 08:40 AM

I HATE THEM. They taste awful, they smell bad, they MUSHY...

UGh.

Unfortunately, my family makes me eat them (if they are around), regardless of my total dislike of them.

nuttyturnip Aug 10, 2007 09:24 AM

Like Crash, I'm not fond of the squishy insides of tomatoes. However, one of the best additions to pasta are sundried tomatoes.

Golfdish from Hell Aug 10, 2007 12:17 PM

I never liked them alone, so I avoided them. Now, it's taboo to eat a sub or a burger without one (if there's no one behind/around me, I ask the fast food people to make sure my sandwiches have tomato on them). Plus...visually, they make my mouth water. They're just appetizing to look at.

Bernard Black Aug 10, 2007 08:08 PM

I have an on-off love of tomatoes. Especially cherry tomatoes. But I remember when we grew our own and made tomato chutney, my god was that gorgeous. I don't eat them so much anymore, but damn did this thread give me a craving for them. And tomato juice <3

jinjo39 Aug 11, 2007 12:13 AM

Rogue Tomatoes, yes. Real tomatoes, no.

Mmm...Rogue Tomato pizza = delicious.

Onions are good, you know...tomatoes are far worse. Just thinking of eating one makes me puke. I like onions, especially raw ones (a bit out of the topic...I know!).

BlueEdge Aug 11, 2007 11:29 PM

I'm not a fan of raw or even like solid tomatoes, but I'll live with ketchup. Your situation with tomatoes reminds me of my hatred towards mushrooms. They're evil I tell you!

Yggdrasil Aug 15, 2007 02:31 AM

I simply cannot stand raw tomatoes, I'll tolerate them on my burgers if I can't taste them but otherwise I can't stand their texture. I will however gladly consume products derived from tomatoes like tomato sauce or whatnot. However I have yet to actually try tomato juice, it sometimes looks just like mashed up tomatoes which to me is no different really from just eating it before its smashed.

doldrums Aug 15, 2007 04:20 AM

I like tomatoes. Preferably raw though. Nice n' fresh :)

Just wondering, what type of cooked tomato?

I like them raw, cooked, tomato sauce (mmmm Italian food).
I guess I'm a tomato fan. :P

Excrono Aug 15, 2007 07:04 PM

Tomatoes are one of my favorite veggies, and have been since I was I kid. I like them cooked, but prefer them raw, with a little salt sprinkled on (which brings out the flavor). In fact, when I eat salads with tomatoes in them I usually save them for last so I can savor the flavor on their own. Texture has never been an issue for me, as I don't mind the sometimes mushy quality of an over-ripe tomato (which are not good anyway.) Every time I see someone leave their tomato at a restaurant I can't help but be amazed at how they are depriving themselves of something so good.

Will Aug 18, 2007 06:58 PM

I put tomatoes in most of my dishes. It's a very mild way to add lots of juice.

Men should make a habit of eating raw and processed tomatoes every day. Lycopene FTW.

Plarom Aug 18, 2007 09:30 PM

Tomatoes are poisonous to me. They are technically fruits, and all fruits wreck havoc on my body because I'm allergic to citric acid.

One night I ordered a burger from a local Dennys and specifically asked them not to put tomatoes on it. Of course, I realized that there WERE tomatoes on it after two bites into the burger, and ended up throwing up in the parking lot in a matter of minutes. That was the only time I can remember where I've ever ingested a tomato. I do love ketchup, though.

Guru Aug 24, 2007 03:54 PM

I love cherry tomatoes with a little bit of vinaigrette and salt and pepper. A great snack!

But I'm not completely dependent upon tomatoes. I could go without. Sometimes I'd rather not have tomatoes on hot sandwiches and the like, because they have a tendency to get mushy and gross. =(

nitsu Aug 27, 2007 02:11 PM

I want to love tomatoes. They look so delicious, smell so good, but they taste awful.
I do however love things cooked with tomatoes, and things made from tomatoes. I just can't stand tomatoes by themselves. :(

Garnet Aug 28, 2007 09:46 AM

I absolutely can not stand tomatoes. They are just so nasty! I refuse to ever eat one again.

I love Ketchup though. ;p

matira_bay Sep 5, 2007 09:09 AM

Same with above. Love ketchup, not raw tomatoes.
To me, raw tomatoes taste fishy, and sometimes I can't stand the texture of tomatoes.

Magi Sep 5, 2007 04:38 PM

In my old house, my mom use to grow yam leaf and tiny tomato across the street in a community garden. Those tiny tomato are awesome, despite the fact they are grown on dog craps. >.>;;

Well, we eat lots of crops grown on craps, either on animal pups or human pups. There is no need to be shy.

Additional spam: Could we say ketchup to be alike as tomatoes?

knkwzrd Sep 5, 2007 10:30 PM

I very rarely eat tomatoes because I don't care much for the texture, though I usually enjoy tomato sauces. I don't mind the odd diced tomato in most dishes. A lot of people I know will have a hamburger with a slice of tomato and a bunch of ketchup, which is something I don't think I'll ever understand.

scotty Sep 5, 2007 10:51 PM

I really hate the taste and texture. I hate Italian food like lasagna and spaghetti because I hate tomato sauce. My parents learned not to make me foods with tomatoes because I would not eat it and skip dinner. I accidentally ate a bit of tomato in my burger a few days ago and puked from disgust.

The unmovable stubborn Sep 5, 2007 11:04 PM

What kind of shitty, over-ripe tomatoes are you guys eating that the texture is offensive? Tomatoes don't HAVE a texture, they're just water balloons full of delicious.

Tomatoes have strange smell, strange flavour, and strange taste. I don't find strange texture.

Therefore I conclude:
Tomatoes are aliens made to destroy us all.

By the way:

You're talking about watermelons here.

The unmovable stubborn Sep 6, 2007 12:07 AM

Watermelon is delicious but it is messy and must be fought with knives in order to surrender the delicious =/

Dullenplain Sep 6, 2007 12:34 AM

Now if there's one thing that makes me gag, it's watermelon.

I couldn't agree more.

My dad grows tomatoes. =O They're amazing.

Ayos Sep 7, 2007 02:01 AM

Apathetic. At times, do not want. At times, do want. Most times, do not care.

Ketchup is teh awesome though. As is spaghetti sauce.

One of my co-workers is a vegetarian and her and her cousin grow their own vegetables. Just a couple of weeks ago she brought a couple of lbs. of tomatoes for us and I brought a couple home and made some AWESOME salsa with some of my dad's homegrown tree chili peppers and onions.

Homegrown fruits and veggies are awesome

I second that question.

You guys are making me envious with all this talk of homegrown foods. I need to move somewhere that isn't all desert so I can do the same. :(

Seriously. If you're getting all your plant food out of a refrigerated case at the local Kroger's, you have absolutely no frame of comparison to what those foods are actually like when they're remotely fresh.

Sarag Sep 7, 2007 08:43 AM

There is nothing more delicious than garden cherry tomatoes. I will cut the first nigger who says otherwise, and the ashes from his body will make fine fertilizer for my crops.

Artix Sep 9, 2007 11:19 AM

They are all right. I could live without them but they are occasionally somewhat good. I only eat them sometimes on sandwhiches though. One of my friends at school could take a tomato and bite straight into it. Now I could never do that. They are just too slimy for my liking.

Then just move to a village and grow yourself a farm. Isn't that simple? :D

Dr. Uzuki Sep 11, 2007 05:32 AM

Reading through this thread left me dumbfounded at how many people hate their taste buds. Cherry tomatoes are the best thing in the world. Biting into one is an explosion of yum. Hamburgers are better with tomatoes. Salads are better with tomatoes. Tacos? Better with tomatoes. Tomato soup? Goddamn.

The only form I've ever not liked tomatoes in was stewed when I was a kid, but I've even come to tolerate those now. Ketchup I'm not so hot on, I don't hate it, but it's not really comparable to the real thing. Best thing about them is the clean taste and watery texture, a value that's lost on the thick condiment.

Sousuke Sep 11, 2007 05:19 PM

I can't stand raw tomatoes. Tomatoes in general, really...

Except for in pasta sauce. Though if it has chunks of tomato in it... Ew. I hate the texture of tomatoes, I'm not sure why.

Lycanthrope Sep 22, 2007 05:22 PM

I love the smell but absolutely hate to eat raw tomatoes.

I do, however, love salsa, ketchup, and other tomato products, so some folks think I'm weird.

kinkymagic Sep 23, 2007 06:16 PM

I picked Tomatoes one summer, I wasn't too fond of them beforehand but now the smell of them makes me feel physically sick.

Paco Sep 23, 2007 10:12 PM

You know what, chief? I spent the better part of my childhood (CHILDHOOD) picking oranges, olives, tomatoes, watermelons, grapes, a large assortment of chili peppers and lemons (complete with 2"-long thorns that can pierce leather work gloves), however, I didn't develop a proximity-driven hate for these items; in fact, I love them even more because of it.

All I'm saying is that if you REALLY like something, a little honest work that never killed you should actually enhance your love of it because you now know what it takes to get it to a dinner table.

Elegy Oct 3, 2007 12:21 PM

I used to hate tomatoes before I started cooking a lot. I always thought they tasted gross and I'd never include them in anything I hate. However, I've grown to like them a lot and I think they can really make a dish better. I wouldn't just cut one up and eat it straight, but they're great mixed in with stuff.

kat Oct 7, 2007 01:23 AM

As a kid my mom used to make me eat them raw with honey on them. While it wasn't particularly repulsive, I'm definitely less fond of that combination. Otherwise I love tomatoes, I can't stand cheese or cream so any sort of tomato based sauce on my pasta is my favorite.

Lambert Dec 2, 2007 11:33 AM

A day without a tomato is a wasted day! But I remember myself being forced to eat tomatoes when I was a kid, I hated that. I turned out fine few months after they stopped doing that. Parents shouldn't do that to their children. It's like.. they should, but with sense. Otherwise their children will complain on GFF=) Parents who force their children to tomatoes: shame on you! Future parents: let this be a lesson for you=)

war Dec 24, 2007 09:12 AM

Tomatoes got so much to offer. After all it's what makes pizza a pizza.

By the way a lot of shipping companies like to use a needle and some sort of edible homogeneous liquid and makes the tomaotes ripe faster going from green to red artificially fast. Your best best is to get those cherry or grape style and take it from there. Roma tomaotes is more like to get the needel as well.
Having a tomato garden will allow it to be naturally grown and ripen.

Angelwing Dec 29, 2007 04:38 PM

I LOVE tomatoes. In salads, on sandwiches, eaten plain, cooked, tomato sauce, ketchup...pretty much any way. I even enjoy tomato juice, although most commercial juices are way too salty, thus ruining the wonderful tomato taste. My only problem with tomatoes is the price, which is horrendous (at least it usually is over here).
