I'm just hoping they will bring them to America. :gonk:

valiant Jul 30, 2007 02:41 PM

Agh! I really hope that this is localized. DS Remake serie woot! Looks pretty enticing due to the updated graphics.

Sword Familiar Jul 30, 2007 02:43 PM

Considering that they are for the DS AND they also released FF3 AND that at least DQ4 was actually released in the US AND(yeah, I'm abusing the "AND", so sue me...) DQ8 was a great success, I would say that it's highly likely that they will be coming to America, and quite possibly even (gasp!) Europe.

Forsety Jul 30, 2007 02:59 PM

Creepy how EGMs rumors were right for once. This is their chance to finally give us the PSOne remake of 4 (the scans certainly look like shots from it anyway just ported to the DS) and I'd love a remake of 6 rather it winds up in English or not. :x

Kostaki Jul 30, 2007 09:05 PM

I approve of these ports, if only because Dragon Quest IV was awesome and V and VI have never really made it here before. If localized, all three are pretty much guaranteed buys from anyone that owns a DS and even one RPG for it.

There's good money to be made here, if they do the right thing and bring them over.

SouthJag Jul 30, 2007 10:16 PM

Who's doing the remakes? Is it TOSE or is it actually Level 5? I'd be surprised for the latter, considering they're working on White Knight Story and Dragon Quest IX.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jul 30, 2007 10:18 PM

I'd assume TOSE, and that's nothing but bad news, but at the very least their DS stuff generally has turned out better than their PSP stuff. We can only hope this follows suit.http://colonelskills.belkanairforce....ages/ace/1.gif

Muzza Jul 31, 2007 04:00 AM

Looks like Arte Piazza (of [presumed] Opoona fame) will be covering the remakes.

I've never really gotten into the Dragon Quest series (I still haven't finished VIII and can't see myself doing so any time soon ;_; ) but this news, like the announcement of Dragon Quest IX for the DS, has got me intrigued. I like the graphical style and gameplay mechanics (I've read/experienced [about] them). Here's hoping all three games are localised. I'm about 95% sure that they will be...I mean, just look at the recent DQ treatment out of Japan!

rpgcrazied Jul 31, 2007 10:24 AM

ugh, yet another reason to own a ds now i guess

With Tales of Innonce/Dragon Quest 9 and now this... I really wish there was a dsplayer for the wii or whatever.. i really dont like handhelds, i wanna play them on the tv dammit :P

speculative Jul 31, 2007 02:34 PM

Are IV-VI anything like VII? I thought VII blew big chunks...

Forsety Jul 31, 2007 02:39 PM

Depends what you mean by 'alike'. They all generally share the same interface but the only games that are really that similar are 6 and 7 (since 6 uses pretty much the same job class system). If you mean the terrifying length in which the game never seems to end (DQ7 was a loooonnnngg game) then at the very least you're safe from that. None of the others are even close in that regard.

No. Hard Pass. Jul 31, 2007 08:40 PM

I'd be more enthused if this was remakes of 1-3. A little more classic, please.

Not a huge DQ fan, but I'd have liked to be back at the beginning.

Forsety Jul 31, 2007 11:34 PM

They've already remade 1~3 for the SNES and GBC. This is a good chance to finally get out 5 and 6 too, which never left Japan previously.

... That and I'm sure we can all agree it's either 3 or 4 which is the best game in the series (or not but I sure think so) and since they've already remade DQ3 semi recently for the GBC (and actually released it stateside...!) we should all be woot wooting for a remake of 4 we may actually get in English! =P

Borg1982 Aug 1, 2007 05:02 AM

This is good news. I am hoping for these to come state side.
DQ5 has one of my favorite storylines.
DQ6 has tons of gameplay.
I would also like to see the PS1 version of DQ4 come to DS.

Are these actually getting a US release? DQ5 sucked pretty bad, but I'd jump on a remake of 4 in a heartbeat, especially if they drop the AI control over the rest of the party.

jb1234 Apr 16, 2008 12:38 PM

DQ5 is my favorite in the series. I'm really hoping that they localize it...

What was so bad 'bout 5? :(

They allowed manual control in the PSX version and as far as I can tell the DS version of 4 is a graphically toned down (barely) port of the PSX version so I'm sure it'll allow for it too. Not that it matters, there is absolutely nothing anywhere that even HINTS these games are going to be available over seas so everyone get ready to flip off SE.

Lukage Apr 16, 2008 04:06 PM

Do remember that if you can tolerate (or understand) Japanese, the DS games are region-free and can be imported. Although this looks good, it just makes me think that DQ9 is even farther off than I imagined.

Monkey King Apr 17, 2008 10:50 AM

Besides chopping the party list down to 3 people, DQ5 came off more as Dragon Quest Pokemon than an actual entry in the series. That and the game becomes painfully slow after the intro segment. I dig the protagonist's Conan the Barbarian backstory, but after all that it was nearly impossible to maintain interest. The series seemed to develop some severe pacing issues after it left the NES.

No opinion either way on DQ6. I tried picking it up, but the translation patch available at the time was too buggy, so I didn't get to play much of it.

mortis Apr 17, 2008 11:26 AM

It looks interesting and given that people have agreed with me concerning the length of DW7, I might give this a try. Then again, save for DW1, I really...REALLY have had a hard time getting into these games. I mean, even after DW5 and 6 were had fan-based translations, I never played them.

I still wonder if there will be a release, state-side. I mean, I guess it COULD happen but it's not like DW7 spiked interest to the point that they brought the games never released in the States like they did with FInal fantasy. Still though...maybe this remake will make it over.

Forsety Apr 17, 2008 03:15 PM

Dragon Quest 8 sold 600+k copies here so I'd say it garnered a fair amount of interest. (not sure if you were talking about this game or actually talking about 7, but I don't see why you'd mention 7 since it sold horribly here) Enough so to release some handheld games, how much could it hurt them if they didn't sell incredibly well?

Besides, it seems like even the shittiest crapfest handheld games sell decently so acceptable/oldschool RPGs would sell better there too compared to if they were released on a console. Well, it seems like it anyway.

Speaking of... it certainly reminds me of Balloon Bomber!

Just here to stick in some scans of V:

Yay about IV going English.
(Protip: People should buy it so as we get V and VI.)

nanstey May 2, 2008 03:33 AM

But it or get banned indeed. I'm glad to hear the news - I just hope it sticks - Front Mission 5 got as far as patenting before they canned a US release.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor May 2, 2008 06:35 AM

Yes, but unlike Front Mission's case, the previous (major) game in this series sold more than four copies on this continent. Wether or not this is because of it being the free game included with your FF12 demo notwithstanding.

DRAGON QUEST IV | SQUARE ENIX

September 16th. Fuck yes.

Also totally confirms 5 and 6 as "coming soon".

Wake me up when VI makes it over. III and that were the only old ones I cared about.

What didn't you like about 4 or 5? I particularily enjoyed 4, and 5 was nothing too terrible. (Certainly not a personal favorite, but it was hardly horrible.)

Muzza May 21, 2008 01:05 AM

=O Announcement?!

I hate to say it, but it's about damn time. I never played the original, but I'll definitely be checking this one out. Looks like a fine RPG experience.

I thought the way IV's plot played out was original, but I don't like not being able to play as the protagonist for an extended period of time. It's more of a quirk, I guess.

I didn't like V from a gameplay standpoint. I was pretty young when it first came out, and I was bored by both the import and the fan-translated version years later. It just played waaaay too slow and traditional to me.

There's nothing seriously wrong with any game in the series; but the relatively unchanging gameplay made me critique the games from weird angles.

Laaaaaazy. They're recycling monster sprites from DQ7 and 8. The 'bag of treasure' monster is too distinctive not to notice. Then again, seems appropriate considering the artist.
