Gran Turismo 5

Yeah ok it's a racing simulation

BUT! It's going to be an awesome racing simulation! The first two videos are very promising, and holy shit, there are some of the most awesome cars: Audi R8, Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG, Ferrari F430 and Clio V6 Renault Sport.

Hitting the market in 2008. Your first impressions?

Dopefish Jul 26, 2007 12:42 PM

Lemme guess how this one differs from #4:
  • Better graphics
  • Smarter AI
  • Some new game mode(s)
  • More cars
  • Better physics
  • And...uh...a SECRET CLOWN CAR
  • Also, oh, uh, Forza had that decal creating dealie, let's add that
  • Also, Props instead of Kudos, because Kudos are dumb

Just like EA Sports' offerings, these Gran Turismo/Forza/Project Gotham Racing releases are all the same, every year, with enough little things here and there to make people drop -- what is it now? $60? -- on the new release every year or two. Pictures like the one you posted, Mush, do nothing but make me wonder if there is any creativity left in SCEA with regards to the GT series. HEY, EVERYBODY'S CHASING EACH OTHER ON THE SAME PATH, LET'S HOPE SOMEONE IS BALLSY ENOUGH TO TRY AND PASS SOMEONE ELSE.

The only thing that would make this game fun is outrageous crash scenes, because, let's face it: that's what game makers are slowly starting to learn from SportsCenter. Crashes = ratings.

I don't think that GT5 will offer "crash scenes", in this case, you might want to get Burnout: Paradise instead :(

Aardark Jul 26, 2007 12:54 PM

Wow, very promising first reply in this thread. 'Better graphics, better AI, better everything, man, this fucking sucks! I want this game to be a DIFFERENT GENRE!'

Edit: cockpit view:

Dopefish Jul 26, 2007 12:59 PM

I think the point I was trying to make was that the three games I mentioned are doing the same thing year after year, and it's annoyingly predictable, at least in my eyes. I'm not the sort for driving sims, as you can plainly tell, so I'm sorry if my post was a little more biting than one would expect.

I mean, taking each of the three newest games (GT5, PGR3 and F2), there's hardly much difference to discern from each. I suppose that could be said about any two games which are based in the same vein (take two NBA games from any particular year, for example).

There's nothing really fantastic that draws me to these games anymore. Better graphics can only do so much. Better AI, I fear, could just be a detriment to a learning curve that is already steep when you're a newbie jumping right into a game that demands a lot in terms of understanding braking, shifting, drafting, following lines, etc. The training mode that GT4 offered only goes so far if you don't have the right mind for the game.

Aardark Jul 26, 2007 01:17 PM

Um, yeah, so what core changes do you expect developers to introduce in a driving simulator? If you're not interested in driving simulators and want arcade gameplay and crashes, play Burnout: Paradise, as Musharraf said. It will probably be more fun than Gran Turismo, either way. But I kind of don't understand what you want to accomplish here. I think football games are fucking lame, but I don't go in Madden threads and start complaining that the players are still running around the field and throwing a ball and nothing has changed since the NES.

Dopefish Jul 26, 2007 01:21 PM

Maybe I'm just curious what keeps people coming back for more.

Or maybe I'm trolling and I just don't realize it yet (probably the latter). If so, I'll just go back to where I came from and find a mod to fix the mess I made.

I'd sure would like to know what the allure about games like these are.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Jul 26, 2007 01:24 PM

Ok, so you don't enjoy this particular genre too much. What's your point?

Grundlefield Earth Jul 26, 2007 01:27 PM

Well I don't know about GT (only really played first two), but PGR series is always innovating every game. PGR2's big thing was car damage, online leaderboards for each race, and downloadable replays on the fly as well as the walk through garage. PGR3 had photo realistic environments of the cities as well as GOTHAM TV. And now PGR4 is introducing for the first time Changing weather conditions that affect the performance of every vehicle as well as introducing motorcycles into the kudus world.

As you can see bizarre creations is doing quite a lot and probably other stuff I forgot to mention. I never played Forza, but havent heard anything totally innovative except total customization and trading cars. Although I could be wrong.

russ Jul 26, 2007 06:51 PM

If you are going to simulate something that occurs in real life, once you get to a certain level of how well the game simulates this real life activity, you won't be able to innovate any further! Gasp! Basically if they add a lot of nice, new tracks, make the game look nice, make the AI believable, have a ton of cars, and have realistic physics, it will be worth a purchase. This isn't complicated. Have a racing sim and want to make a sequel to it? Step one should always be to add new tracks. Step two would be to add new cars. Step three would be to explore new game modes/race types.

That would be the best thing ever! I guess they're not adding car damage again because that would be too much like hard work, but what's going to happen for online? The GT games let you easily abuse the fact that the cars must remain perfect, you can pinball off other cars going round corners with no worries. People like me would do that all the time online, it would make others angry! :]

you know all those overtaking in the middle of a turn challenge missions in GT4, you just listed the easy way to beat them all with a cheap car and therefore farm money for a better vehicle. I have always liked the GT series so I am pretty sure this version won't let me down as long as I still have a ton of models and tracks to play with I will be fine. So far I am waiting for one thing, more paint colors to be honest I was always bothered with the fact that in most cases you had a limited scheme of colors to work with, not talking about decals or stuff that complicated just a wider array of colors to choose from.

russ Jul 27, 2007 08:20 AM

After seeing what Forza offered with their decal designs and whatnot, who wants to bet that Sony has pressured the GT guys to include a similar feature, only with keyboard and mouse support, more robust image editing tools, and possibly user uploaded images.

I AM INSTANTLY REASSURED THAT THIS GAME WILL BE GOOD.

Megalith Jul 27, 2007 06:23 PM

Well, Gran Turismo 5 will be amusing because we'll finally find out what the PS3 can do in the hands of a competent development team.

I'll probably just do a lap with the Tiburon and sell it.

Look dude, I don't go into your NHL 94 {NHL 95 is vastly superior by the way} thread and piss in your cheerios. If you CLEARLY have no interest in the game being discussed, why are you even in this thread? You knew when you clicked on the thread that it was about a racing sim, which you clearly do not like, and yet here you are, trolling.

espressivo Jul 27, 2007 07:35 PM

This is probably the most realistic screenshot of a video game I have ever seen. And I'm pretty sure it's not pre-rendered since it looks like a photo mode picture, if it wasn't for the logo on the upper left, I'd think this was a real photograph.

Thanatos Jul 28, 2007 07:51 AM

that screenshot is beautiful... XD

Paco Jul 28, 2007 11:12 AM

Personally, I don't see myself buying a PS3 for this game. I've been a fag for the series since 1997 but I've grown steadily weary of it. I WANT to like the game but, so far, the series hasn't shown me any significant improvements. It's not like the graphics and physics leap that GT3 was over GT2 so, to me, this isn't really an incentive.

But, to be realistic, if I ALREADY had a PS3 I wouldn't even THINK about buying this game. I'd slurp it up like it was cheap beer when I'm hungover. I love the series that much.

Rotorblade Jul 28, 2007 11:37 AM

The series main goal... fuck, that was stupid of me. Titular claim, RATHER (driving simulator) has usually let me down. I think there are better games to play if you're looking to actually race. Admittedly, I'm of the mind that things like racing and sports games could be pursued in lol real life and feel much more fruitful (yes yes, not all of us can be racing pros, have the budget for tuning, have the ability to play sports at a certain level). However, I can't deny that looks awesome... it's just that the series has always looked great. A zenith of graphics even. As already stated before, if you didn't like it before on a glance, you're probably not going to change your mind here.

Unless the racing and driving is radically different this time around I'll still pass.

Such as what, Burnout? Just because you actually have to use the brakes and AVOID drifting like a maniac into people doesn't mean you're not actually racing, y'know.

Rotorblade Jul 28, 2007 12:08 PM

MotoGP and TOCA, actually. The variety of racing situations TOCA puts you in is rather impressive. I realize how one could jump to the "BURNOUT" conclusion based off my post, just don't see the necessity. Just here for love of games, is all.

espressivo Jul 28, 2007 12:22 PM

yea, I know what you mean. I'm a big fan of gran turismo as well and I feel that every new installment in the series only has the graphical improvement and a slightly altered physics engine. i think the biggest thing polyphony has to add for GT5 is damage, not just cosmetic but damage that affects how the car handles, the ability to customize the car's body and online play, which i think they are working on. Oh, the drift mode from GT HD was a nice addition that I hope they plan to keep.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jul 28, 2007 12:25 PM

Your average GFF idiot doesn't play TOCA, you're going to have to forgive me for assuming, especially considering the stupid hate in this thread already. My bad for assuming you were as dumb as the most of the rest of the populace.

Good fucking call with TOCA though, although I personally don't dig MotoGP just because I'm not a huge bike racing fan.http://colonelskills.belkanairforce....ages/ace/1.gif

Rotorblade Jul 28, 2007 12:40 PM

Well, definitely on the racing game cred of most people. Nothing wrong with passion. I mean, if anyone had mentioned Burnout, especially in the context of "for the 'Racing'", they'd need a serious verbal smack upside the head. I think most people owe it to themselves to play TOCA, that game is to racing as Gran Turismo is to garage tuning (no cheapshot intended if it seems implied).

MotoGP... I can only say its steep as fuck learning curve nearly had me feeling the same way as you. It's a shame the latest version turned out shittier than its original X-Box counterpart.

Anyway, Gran Turismo is by no MEANS a "bad game." I know that I expect certain things from certain game genres. Racing is a particular favorite of mine. However, I usually have to be careful when making criticism, because a lot of players/gamers/whatevers tend to get upset with a game based off what they want it to be rather than what it is. And it's fucking hilarious when they can't make a distinction between lack of quality and a personal fucking problem.

Soluzar Jul 28, 2007 12:43 PM

The screnshots showing the cars from the outside look outstanding, although I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison with Forza, just for fun. What's bugging me right now is that the cockpit view looks just a little bit more blurry and grainy than I'd expect from the latest hi-def console. Can someone please tell me that's a problem with the image quality of that particular screenshot, not with the game?

I don't own a PS3, but I anticipate playing a lot of this round at my friend's house. He's got PS3, and I imagine he'll be only too grateful for a new game to play on it. The ones he's got right now are wearing real thin due to lack of variety.

Yes, obviously. It's just a random-ass shot from some Japanese blog, because I haven't see any other images showing the cockpit view yet. I just posted it because it's an improvement to have that view at all, previous Gran Turismo games didn't. And, at any rate, not that you can ever really judge the graphics quality of a 1080p game from a screenshot of that size.

Also, by the time Gran Turismo 5 will be released, PS3 will have already have a shitton of other good games.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jul 28, 2007 12:53 PM

It's coming out sometime in 2008, spring at the earliest, though I wouldn't be surprised if it got delayed. Though, Sony has promised that a downloadable Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (demo with online play, basically) will be available later this year.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jul 28, 2007 01:07 PM

Don't go assuming that crazy photomode pic is what it's actually gonna look like and stuff. There was similar trickery done in the photomode of GT4, if you think back to it.

You wanna shot of what its actually gonna look like in motion and shit?

hey guys what about the following: instead of randomly posting screenshots from random "internet websites" (source?) or - even better - producing verbal diarrhea like "this aint a good racin' game if you like racin' games play Oblivion ........... its not exactly a racin' game but ...... ya know..[...]....", we could just wait for the game and have a cup of tea.... hows that

Wait....what? You want a thread that doesn't discuss the game at all? You're saying my additional screenshots had a *negative* impact on this thread? especially considering where it was at on the last page there?

You've got to be fucking kidding me, here. The hell do you want us to talk about? What we're doing to pass the time until it comes out?http://colonelskills.belkanairforce....ages/ace/1.gif

Musharraf Jul 29, 2007 02:46 AM

Nonono, you misunderstand me. I want you guys to discuss this upcoming game, but I don't exactly want this thread to become a discussion platform for people who want to discuss whether GT is a racing simulation series or not and how they would rather play other games where they can crash cars etc. http://forumimages.somethingawful.co...ies/emot-q.gif

Aardark Jul 29, 2007 03:09 AM

The discussion is fine after the point Dopefish removed himself from it; I don't think passingly mentioning another racing game in a thread about a different racing game should be seen as a massive problem. That's how a discussion 'thread' works, you start with one topic and it's possible that you'll touch upon others along the way.

Rotorblade Jul 29, 2007 03:15 AM

Tangents fucking happen. Unless we all want to homogenize.

New facts concerning GT 5 Prologue:

1. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is due to be released worldwide in 26th October 2007, at the launch of the Tokyo Motor Show.
2. At the 2007 Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) David Reeves confirmed certain details about the upcoming game. He confirmed that there will be 16-player online races, 50 cars, 5 tracks, and the game will support full 1080p resolution.

Sounds pretty good! :)

espressivo Aug 24, 2007 09:10 PM

Yea, it looks pretty good, even for a demo. Check out this gameplay vid, if you haven't seen it yet. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23974.html
There's a new setting in the options called driving physics, which was set to standard, there could be an arcadey setting or even a harder setting that will be closer to real life driving physics. It also looks like there will be some clutch support in this game, look at the accelerator bar, it turns red when the player goes up a gear. I don't know if this was previously announced, but I'm really looking forward to prologue and the full GT5.

Oh, by the way, the Blu-Ray Disc version will cost $43.10 (¥4,980), the PSN Download version $38.95 (¥4,500) in Japan. This is quite freaking much for a "demo" (and Prologue is not really more than a demo).

Also, a demo of a demo, lol!
