A very fine animated film. I watched it many times as a child. =)

I saw that one all the time as a kid, rented the Laser disk version so many times in Hong Kong... The DVD is out as well, and I have it.

So, we're going to ruin Alvin and the Chipmunks now? Just like when you ruined Ninja Turtles with TMNT III? Perfect, just perfect. The Chipmunks are not rappers, dammit! The closest they ever got was singing to Beat It by Michael Jackson. Shit, I own the record but it's scratched to hell.

Heh, that's perfect. A movie that looks like something I'm gonna hate voice acted by a wrestler I hate. Freakin gold. I'll be amazed if this movie turns out okay.

After the initial laugh, I can only wonder if it's just a whole "Chipmunks trying to be image conscious" plot. "Stick to your roots" or something. Because after the initial "lol", I can't really seriously believe they'd completely go another direction without some kind of reason other than "We really don't get it."

Good god, what have they done? Yet another one of my favorite childhood memories tarnished. Is there any way this movie can be good? I hope so, but I'm not holding out.

First Alvin and the Chipmunks started as a recording group in the late '50's.
They became a cartoon in the early '60's--reflecting the current times--and making music, by the way.
The cartoon didn't last long, but the singing did....
Twenty years later, the gang showed up again on television--once again reflecting contemporary times. Doing covers of popular songs, and so forth.
Then there's the animated movie...
That cartoon was canceled after a long time on the air--but we still remember the songs....
And now, Alvin and the Chipmunks are being put into the movies in CGI form....

Bad? Good? Who knows? In each visual incarnation, they've reflected the world around them. And, it seems once again, they're doing just that.

I did, but that flash cartoon was rather amusing and cool, and its meant to be a parody.

Where as this monstrosity is just Hollywood butchering classics and turning them "Urban" to "connect" with the audience.

By far my favorite cartoon based movie, next to Tom and Jerry.

No--I'm arguing that the Chipmunks reflected the time they were in--in both animated incarnations. So, why should the movie be any different?

In this thread we have people going "poo-poo" on this movie because it's different from 20 years ago. The cartoon at THAT time was different from the one 20 years before that. So, would those who watched the original "poo-poo" the '80's one for the same reasons the folks in this thread are?

I wouldn't say the naughts are exactly characterized by rap, though. Maybe the '90s, but that ship sailed, well, at the end of the '90s.

It's inaccurate to say Alvin and company reflected contemporary pop culture because they filtered heavily to keep things wholesome and inoffensive. When they came back in the 80s, were they doing covers of Duran Duran or KISS? Did the Chipmunks ever sing Money for Nothing?

They're not even trying to preserve the spirit of the original concept, they're just exploiting the name recognition factor of a time-honored piece of nostalgia. It's the same as the Dukes of Hazzard, Charlie's Angels, Bewitched, and so on and so forth. They went straight for the hip-hop angle solely for the shock value, whether it was appropriate for the original concept or not. It's the Chipmunks in name only, there to make a few quick bucks from the few curious, foolish souls who will pay to see just how badly their childhood has been shat upon.

Yea they are doing just that, but certain viewers don't have to accept it. And I'm pretty sure people from the 50's and 60's had the same reaction. I wouldn't know how the chipmunks were in that time period, I was born in '82 >_>.

movie, not another live-action movie of an old cartoon series. Why do they insist of CGI'ing old cartoon favourites when a normal animated movie would have sufficed instead?

I'm calling that the worst trailer of 2007, if not the past 10 years. I was utterly appalled when I saw that before The Simpsons Movie. It just reeks of shit. It even has shit humor in it. What a waste.

Hmm, I think Bratz could be the reason to like every other movie in existance, no matter how awful it may be. You can now say, "Hey, at least I don't like Bratz." Or perhaps you buy a ticket to see this new Alvin movie and your friends make fun of you for it, just say, "Hey, at least I didn't see Bratz."

For that to work you'd have to trick a friend to go and then he could be the best kind of scape-goat for everything.

Honestly, I cringed a lot more at the Chipmunks trialer than I did with the Bratz trailer. I guess I'm retarded though, as I always thought that they were called the Chipmunks because, well, they were kids that looked like chipmunks. I never thought they were actual fucking chipmunks. Weren't they the size of normal humans in the old cartoon show?

While I haven't seen the Bratz trailer I think I can picture what it will be like. When you think about the target audience for The Bratz of course everyone here will want to shit on it. The more we don't like it the more on target it probably is. The Chipmunks on the other hand didn't really show much. What it definitely has going for it is the voices. What it got wrong was the size. I don't know about their original incarnation, but I know in the 80's they were in the 4.5 ft range. They surely weren't actual chipmunks. With that in mind I don't see how the plot can possibly mimic anything anyone here is used to. Outside of them being big stars their interactions with other people has to be different.

All of that said, it could quite possibly be an enjoyable movie. That is if you don't try to make it the Alvin and the Chipmunks you're used to, but just a movie with pop-star Chipmunks. (Pixar's track record aside) if you can get behind a movie with rats cooking food for humans is this idea really so bad?

I can't help but think that the Bratz slogan of "out of the box" refers to the absolute miscarriage that movie is going to be.

That was a pretty horrible, over-long, and retarded trailer, but Alvin and the Chipmunks still holds the shitcandle for trailers in my book.

It would look even worse if they did a live action movie with 4.5ft chipmunks; you're getting into Alf territory there. What does it really matter if the chipmunks are life size? As long as the writing is decent (which admittedly it most likely won't be), then the movie will be passable.

I hate to throw out the old "It's a kids movie" card, but I'm afraid i'm going to have to.

In terms of whether this movie will be great or not, I'm going to have to say from recent films such as Garfield and such, if it throws in a SHIT TON of pop culture referances, then it'll probably be shit.

I mean hell, Garfield would have been alright, if you know, the Black Eyed Peas woudln't have funded the entire movie it seemed. Every song was one of theirs, it was quite irritating.

In my world, "wrong" means they screwed something up, i.e., a bad thing. I'm not saying the movie will be a winner, but I doubt the quality hinges on the size of the characters.

Jason Lee's acting indicates that he doesn't seem to have any interest in the chipmunks at all lol
