the night owl thread

Hello, fellow insomniacs!

I am forever cursed with this INSANE sleep schedule, and I constantly lament the relative lack of internet activity in the wee hours of the morning.

So, I encourage you guys to post here, but only after 1am, whatever time zone you are in. Because, you know, most decent people are beginning to think about bed by this time.

You can post anything you want. (Some ideas: do you LIKE to be awake really late, or are you simply unable to stay on a normal sleep schedule? What's your favorite time of night?) It doesn't have to be sleep related. I dunno about you, but I kind of think differently when it gets really late. I get a bit reflective. I look up random things on the internet that would probably not interest me nearly so much in the daytime. For example, last night I was searching yahoo! images for pictures of body painting.

My basic goal for this thread is that it provides (I almost spelled it "pervides"—go figure, it's late) some form of entertainment for us night owls, and maybe even an outlet for our nighttime musings.

Additional Spam:
Here are two of the coolest body paint pictures that I found:

Nehmi Jun 26, 2007 03:28 AM

I too, am cursed with this unholy sleep schedule. I work 5 days a week from midnight-8am at a college dorm. To make things worse, I tend to actually sleep at night during the weekends which means I tend to not have a regular sleep schedule.

It was pretty bad keeping myself busy here until this last Christmas, when I received a laptop as a gift. The computers here are pretty stupid (they have this program that basically locks you out from doing anything and reverts it back to what it was before). Now I tend to download massive amounts of weird music...

I used to look up conspiracy theories all the time... but I don't really do much of that anymore.

It is so hard to stay awake from 4am to 6am. ;_;

Monkey King Jun 26, 2007 04:40 AM

It's a quarter to 5, so I don't have much capacity to say anything particularly insightful. So I'll just note that body paint is cool because it's a sneaky way of being publicly naked. Those two models have some deific patience, though. I have no idea how anyone could hold still for that long.

GorgeousGhost Jun 27, 2007 02:54 PM

This is no curse at all. It is indeed a gift! You get far more done when there are fewer interruptions! I also think differently but it's great, some of my best essays have come from writing them between 2am and 6am. I have had insomnia my whole life so I guess I'm just used to it *shrug*

Replace "essays" with "drawings" and that sums up my entire artistic life. My grandma used to fight like hell with me to get me in bed by 9pm when I was in elementary school...I just can't go to sleep with the chickens ;).

And yes, I enjoy the minimal interruptions from nighttime work...nobody calls you (usually...but I have nocturnal friends also), everybody else is asleep. Of course, I also tend to get a lot done if I wake up early in the morning (like, around 6am).

chaofan Jun 28, 2007 11:11 AM

It is 2:57am here in good ol' Australia and I have to say, there's a bit more activity on the internet now compared to Aussie daytime. The fact that America is about 15-20 hours behind explains why updates and/or posts happen most frequently during this time of night for me. Many of the sites and members derive from USA.

Because of that (and too much partying) my schedule is off the wall. I prefer this time of night anyway since it's the only time I can keep me for myself (rather than keep face for the public, for example).

Oh, it's also the best time to look up random stuff, as many posters here have noted. Who ever knew Shaggy (from Scooby-Doo)'s real name was Norville?

Such a Lust for Revenge! Jun 28, 2007 04:23 PM

This thread'll come in handy in the near future. Good idea blue... =o Let's give this thread a nightlife limitation.

Krelian Jun 28, 2007 06:54 PM

0050 hours here in the UK. I'm sitting at the kitchen table with my brother, our respective laptops opposite each other. We're playing Civilization 2, a game neither of us has touched properly in almost a decade. I'm getting my ass pounded.

niki Jun 28, 2007 07:08 PM

2am here. Sipping on some herb tea while listening to dark ambient, playing Hugel races in RO and refreshing the boards every 2 minutes. I have an appointment at 9, of course. I always have an appointment early when I do that, these days. =p

Used to have totally fucked up shedules for years, literally. Going to bed only at daylight ,smoking cig on cig and all. In fact, I think quitting smoking was an important part in my change of schedule. I still like the night time, but God I loved it when I was still smoking.

surasshu Jun 28, 2007 07:31 PM

Nearly 2:30am over here, and the main reason I'm up is I missed my favourite show (Dr. G on Discovery Channel) and want to watch the rerun at 3AM. I don't have a VCR!

I love being up late sometimes, but I also love getting up early sometimes, so the two things clash from time to time and I pass out at like 9PM and sleep till noon the next day. :D

It definitely is one of the biggest advantages of being a 100% freelance worker, all I have to do is hit my deadlines and other than that I can stay up till whenever I want, and do whatever I want. I wanted to watch the Lidell vs. Jackson UFC matchup which was live at something like 5AM, and since it was already 2AM, I just stayed up till 5-6 AM to watch it. (And totally worth it too!)

Krelian Jun 28, 2007 11:34 PM

5:30 AM. My brother left for bed at 3, and the sun is actually up outside now... Strange when I've been in a part of the world where it doesn't fully rise until 9 AM at this time of the year.

Been buggering around editing photos for two hours. Better hit the hay.

Temari Jun 30, 2007 01:16 AM

It's 2:09 am... I know I should sleep. I dont sleep now, it'll mean I'll sleep until 1pm tomorrow. I dont like sleeping through most of the day (plus that means I'll only have an hour to hang around before work).

Yet I'm not tired enough to sleep (probably because I slept until 1pm today), and I dont want to try to sleep just to lie in bed thinking, because that tends to have bad results (see blue's Dream thread just a few under this one).

I should have made a better attempt at keeping the sleep pattern I got from my week on vacation. :-\

RainMan Jun 30, 2007 01:22 AM

Hoo...Hoo...

Beta waves calling my name...

Hoo. ZZZZZZ

ctu Jun 30, 2007 01:51 AM

2:46am here (wile I am typing this) and to be honest I like staying up at night. It is peaceful and cool and I am not bugged by anybody.

blue Jun 30, 2007 02:02 AM

It is nearly 3am, and tonight I have spent some time watching Lily Allen (British pop singer) songs on youtube and researching whatever gossip/dirt the media is heaping on her. I also found her myspace and read some of her blog entries.

Lily is interesting. Her songs are catchy and she clearly possesses talent, but she is far too immature to handle fame. She does things like show up to her concerts drunk, and she abruptly cancelled all but 4 of her 21 scheduled shows on her U.S. tour. She's strangely likeable, though, because she does have this realness about her that many other stars lack entirely.

So that's what I've been doing tonight.

Dee Jun 30, 2007 02:12 AM

I normally don't stay up later than midnight because of work, but meh. Here's my post for night owls.

Arkhangelsk Jun 30, 2007 02:21 AM

My journal entry today (yesterday?) about Fruit was a bit of late-night inspiration. Gee, the amazing things I do to keep myself awake.
:tpg:

And with that, I bid the internet adieu for tonight. I'm going to get off of here before 1am!

ctu Jun 30, 2007 02:35 AM

Well the only thing on my plate is GED school 4 days a week and it is a night school :)

tho I always forget to update and add a new entry to my journal :(

Midna Jun 30, 2007 04:04 AM

2 a.m. and it's another sleepless night. I wish so badly I could sleep, but I can't. I swear if this continues I'm going to buy some sleeping pills and just knock myself the fuck out every night.

blue Jun 30, 2007 04:21 AM

I'm right there with you, Midna. My head is throbbing like all hell broke loose, but I am afraid to go to sleep. I'm also afraid to take any sort of sleep aid, though, because my emotional state is kinda screwy right now, and those things can make you downright crazy.

But I can't say that I'm not tempted to just pop a few Ambien every night. To hell with getting addicted!

RainMan Jun 30, 2007 04:39 AM

I am also having a shitty time trying to fall asleep. Mainly because I've been looking at blue's avatar and beating off. (I hope to God that isn't you)

At any rate, I think I am going to swallow a few benadryl's to try to coerce a bit of sleep into my eyes. Though I might also just post in a semi-stupored state just to see if anyone notices. (probably nothing out of the ordinary)

blue Jun 30, 2007 05:06 AM

Yeah, benedryl is our FRIEND.

And you're beating off to ramoth, not me. Though I guess at this time of night, my avatar might look good...

RainMan Jun 30, 2007 05:21 AM

Btw, by 'beating off', I actually mean I'm brushing my teeth. Yea. So there you are and yes Benadryl is a friend that will seldom let you down...so to speak, for I actually feel that I am falling and that space and time is beginning to slowww to a crawwwwllllllll.......

K_ Takahashi Jun 30, 2007 10:18 AM

I dont do much during the day, I work second shift and just do most of my stuff when I get home (1AM or so). It doesent make my day worthwhile thats for sure.

Summonmaster Jul 1, 2007 12:30 AM

1:25 am. Despite an adventure filled day 3 towns over, I'm going to probably play Pokemon Pearl until 3 or 4 am out of force of habit. I can't seem to break it, ever since I've played FF VI until 5:30 am. It feels productive to game until I'm really instantly sleepy; feels like I've made progress rather than sitting throughout the day itself.

Terrible habit.

TheKnightOfNee Jul 1, 2007 01:18 AM

It's 2:10 am here. I just got home from work. Working at a movie theater generally means I don't get home until late at night (unless I work the open shift, but not many employees are there then, because who goes to see a movie early in the day?)

I've always had trouble getting to bed at a decent time. I am sure that my body's internal clock is set off of normal time by several hours. Thank god for the internet, so I can talk to people at night. Growing up, I used to play games (though I'd get yelled at for doing that) and read books when I couldn't sleep. I still do those things sometimes, but it's nice to have other options.

RainMan Jul 1, 2007 03:02 AM

Anyone have a cigarette?

I just played Resident Evil IV for about 4 hours, and it was orgasmic. I just finished the scenario where Ada collects the 5 samples. Now I can get the Chicago Typewriter in Ada's Different Pathways sidequest. This game really is amazing.

But yea...cigarette break. I think I am going to turn in a bit early this morning. :eagletear:

Shorty Jul 1, 2007 04:51 AM

It's 2:49AM here... I have a stomachache and I can't sleep. ;___;

I'm usually out like a log by 1AM at the latest.

Skexis Jul 1, 2007 05:01 AM

Almost 5 am right now.

I wouldn't normally be up this late, but I had a day off today and tomorrow, so I figured I'd catch up on some of my goofing off.

On an unrelated note for all you PS3 owners out there, Super Stardust HD is a fantastic marketplace buy. Also, If you bought Fifth Element on blu-ray, there's an exchange program that will be taking place. I guess somebody high up decided the video transfer wasn't up to snuff, so they're replacing the ones that have been sold with the remastered version.

chaofan Jul 8, 2007 11:09 AM

This thread needs to keep burning for the night owls of GFF!

Another late-night post, this time at 2am East Australia time (GMT +10; thanks wikipedia!) and I've been scouring the net, picking scraps of pre-E3 rumours (and looking at timezones). Boy am I pumped for news, even though it won't be the same, brain busting event it used to be.

I've got nothing on tomorrow so I might go all out tonight until I drop to sleep. I'd like to sleep early since I've been sleeping around the 4-6am mark this past week. That's pretty f***ing horrible, I gotta admit, but hunger and the fact that my schedule's shifted aren't helping matters.

Meh, off to my chocojournal. It's been a while since I wrote there. And I think I might cook a classic MEAT PIE, though I should keep to the doctor's orders of having a beef-free diet.

Which brings me to one last thing: How many of you night owls feel the need to feed during the twee hours of the morning? It's become an addiction for me. Must.... stop....

blue Jul 13, 2007 04:00 AM

It's nearly 5am on Friday the 13th! And since I have a weakness for McDonald's breakfast (I know, I know...), I'm about to head out and git myself a McGriddle (don't judge).

I slept from about 7pm 'til 1230am, so I'll be lucky to get back to bed by 8am. It's really strange how I always drift back to this ridiculous schedule--for the past few days, I was doing really well and managing to not sleep during the day. I'm very much a natural night owl, though.

Tonight I've been whiling away the time making mix cds, writing in chocojournal, and watching Roseanne on Nick @ Nite (I know you hate Roseanne, but it's a weakness of mine).

ctu Jul 13, 2007 04:11 AM

Any breakfast sandwich I ever got from a fast food place has always been to dry for my taste

Bernard Black Jul 14, 2007 07:29 PM

Tis coming up to 01:30 here. I don't exactly have a normal sleep schedule myself, and this is one of those nights... Posting here seems like a much better idea than going to bed and tossing and turning until I manage to sleep. I don't mind being awake in the wee hours, it's a good time for peaceful reflection on the day and browsing parts of the forum I don't usually see. It's a bugger when I really feel like playing the piano though =/

Rainman, yes indeed. Usually that's what knocks me out. That and a stiff drink.

Midna Jul 26, 2007 05:56 AM

It's almost 4 a.m. and I am tired as hell, but cannot sleep. The morning is going to be simply fantastic.

ctu Jul 27, 2007 03:41 AM

I don't know why I can't get into a good sleeping pattern :( I should be in bed not posting, but I just can't get myself to go to sleep :P

RainMan Jul 27, 2007 03:57 AM

Cheers Bernard!

After a night of stiff drinks, I am good to go. But not after having fallen off a decent sleeping pattern in the process. Oh well. Nice to see a few chaps in my shoes.

Shiny McShine Jul 27, 2007 04:44 AM

It's 2:39AM here, and I am fully awake.

I am on a crazy sleeping schedule due to working most days until midnight, and I just can't seem to get myself to go to sleep until around 3AM. It kinda sucks, but hey at least I start work late enough in the day that I can sleep in.

Jessykins Jul 27, 2007 06:31 AM

I saw this thread, looked at my clock, and thought to myself: "Hey, it's 4:30am, I should post there!"

But then I realized that I have been posting over the whole forum and it did everything I think this thread was supposed to do, which was entertain.

The body art was cool though.

Bernard Black Jul 30, 2007 07:42 PM

Again it's 01:30. That's quite early for me usually (I read rather than browse the forums because I get screensick if that makes any sense), but since I had four hours sleep in total last night and was awake to welcome the dawn I'm suprised I'm not more tired. It was bizzare; I collapsed on my bed at about half eleven to wake up at 3.30am. I managed to fall asleep again at about 5 but I had an incredibly disturbing nightmare; the cat gave me the shakes I was so worried.

Anywho, for entertainment I thought I'd go over my favorites on youtube, and came up with some classics, some randoms and some random classics:
YouTube Video

YouTube Video

I'd put up the video of the dead dog episode but you're all tired as it is, I don't want to make you suicidal ;__;

ctu Aug 10, 2007 01:49 AM

Well I am burning off the complete series of Babylon 5 and getting over 40+ GB back to my HDD :D....bout time since I been downloading it for more then a week

Bernard Black Aug 10, 2007 08:16 PM

I'm contemplating why on earth I did kareoke tonight and why oh why did I give a really creepy guy my number, except for our natural rapport on politics, war, comedy ect. Realisation doesn't even wait until morning anymore ;__;

ctu Aug 11, 2007 05:33 AM

Why can't I ever get to bed at a reasonable time? :(

S_K Aug 30, 2007 09:36 PM

3:36 am now lol

I've never pulled off a not sleep for 24 hours as I'm sure at least one person here has, but if nothing is going on of grave importance within the next 24 hours I average about not sleeping till 4am, my only excuse I can think of for this being the various friends of mine in other timezones I talk with.

I could stay even later, but I have this odd personal rule that 4 am is the absolute latest you can go without totally screwing up your internal clock... that and in the summer any time after that with the birds starting to chirp really puts you off trying to catch some Zs :(

blue Sep 12, 2007 02:34 AM

For some reason, my thoughts take on this poetic quality when it gets past 2am or so. I long for simplicity in the wee hours of the morning.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to have been working out for me so great. :\

RainMan Sep 12, 2007 02:58 AM

Hullo Night Owls, hoo. My brain is beginning to produce alpha waves. I've been dreaming vividly the last few nights. I hope for a good old fashioned moment of bliss tonight...wish me luck.

Good luck tho I am not sure your awake to see that

neus Sep 12, 2007 04:32 AM

It's 5:28 AM. Thought this thread was dead.
I actually went to sleep at 6PM and awoke at 3AM. Right now I feel awake and refreshed. I've eaten, cleaned up, played some games, and now I'm reading random forums and sorting various photos on my hard disque while listening to SaReGaMa :3

Life is good.
