God of War: Chains, bondage whips and handcuffs of Olympus

I know few of you must own PSPs but those of us who do will now have more to do on them than browse for pr0n on them or play Lumines. Why? Because SCEA is unleasing everyone's favorite Spartan anti-hero onto the PSP. Set as a prequel to God of War and God of War II, it's a different take on the story of Kratos after he becomes the fabled "Ghost of Sparta".

There he must face the most feared creatures of Greek Mythology and forced to choose between his own personal redemption and saving the ancient world from certain destruction.

I gotta say, after watching the game videos and the trailer, the graphics do look pretty fuckin' sweet for being a PSP title. I'm actually looking forward to dusting off my PSP in the very near future to exsanguinate some more mythical creatures in ancient Sparta.

SLEW, you illiterate hacks. The past tense of slay is slew.

More God of War is good God of War, I say. What's with the PSP getting all these desirable titles all of a sudden? The thing would have sold a hell of a lot better if they'd had more stuff like this, Castlevania Chronicles, and the Star Oceans coming out at the beginning of its life cycle.

MASSIVE UPDATE BUMP~

Awww man... !

March 4th of NEXT YEAR?

Oh well... Better late than never. At least they're releasing a demo of it later on this month if you signed up for it at the game's website.

Single Elbow Sep 8, 2007 05:40 AM

3 days before birthday next year. It will be a treat!

Can't fucking wait for this one. It's like on the top games I need for my PSP alongside the two Star Ocean remakes and Castlevania one.

Trust me, no need to sign up for anything if you're on custom firmware.

Kairi Li Sep 8, 2007 07:05 PM

Indeed, hope someone uploads it soon.

The Plane Is A Tiger Sep 10, 2007 11:53 AM

Looks like another reason for me to get a PSP at some point in the near future. The graphics seem surprisingly good for a PSP game, and since this one's a prequel we know it'll have a definitive ending, unlike God of War 2. As long as they don't screw up the controls it should turn out to be a solid title.

God of War: Chains of Olympus releases March 4th, 2008
Quote:

Though it's unclear when God of War 3 will skewer the PlayStation 3, the series' debut on the PlayStation Portable now has a firm date. Today, during a visit to Ready at Dawn, GameSpot was told by the developer that God of War: Chains of Olympus will go on sale March 4, 2008.
I'm not entirely sure, but wasn't this game originally supposed to be ready in time for the holidays? March is a long ways away, but at least we'll have a demo to see how it's progressing later this month :/.

So, apparently the demo for this sucker is finally being shipped out to people who signed up for one back in April. I've been reading that a bunch of people are finally getting their demos in the mail. Anybody here get one? I signed up for one, but it's shipping to my home address, but not my school one :/. Oh well, I'll pick it up on Friday when I go home or something...

I hear the draw distance as well as the frame rate is flat out amazing for a portable game. Anybody else with any impressions?

eprox1 Oct 20, 2007 09:31 PM

Yeah, so my demo never came in the mail. Whatever though, because -

DOWNLOADABLE DEMO.

(Here too, if the first link eventually stops working...)

Fucking. Epic.

I have 3.71 M33-2 firmware, so I'm not sure if custom firmware is required to play these or not...

...god this game rules.

Slayer X Oct 20, 2007 09:47 PM

I'm pretty sure that you would. But I'll give it a try anyhow.

Anyone have installation instructions for the demo?

UPDATE
Thank you Google once again. Confirmed that you need custom firmware. Once I get my PSP Slim I WILL hack my current PSP... till then.

Rock Oct 21, 2007 05:22 AM

It's gorgeous. Looks and feels just like the PS2 games. If the full version is released, it's going to be one hell of a game.

Dodging with the L and R triggers takes a bit to get used to, but apart from this, the controls are amazing. I'm on 3.40 OE-A and the demo works just fine.

Inhert Oct 23, 2007 04:31 PM

Wow! I just played the God of Wars demo and I'm totally blown away! I never saw a psp game look as good as this one!. It look almost exactly like the ps2 game. I didn't even noticed a slow-down in game. Really a pretty solid psp game!

guyinrubbersuit Oct 24, 2007 09:56 PM

I got the demo yesterday and played it and it's exactly what God of War should be. Nothing completely new here except for some new magic, unless the spell in the demo was used in part II. The only annoying aspect is dodging using the L and R buttons, but I got used to it after a while. I'll definitely pick this up whenever I get a PSP.

Slayer X Oct 24, 2007 10:13 PM

All I can say is this is one of the best handheld versions of a game I've ever played. Way to go guys, you just melted my PSP with your game's intensity. lol

Sexninja Oct 27, 2007 05:22 AM

Finished the demo, game is too epic for PSP, i mean i wish to play this game as PS3 title in full nextgen glory.
Sony missed the chance.

eprox1 Nov 3, 2007 08:44 PM

Psh. My demo finally came in the mail today. Too bad I already downloaded and played the sucker weeks ago.

Anybody who forgot to sign up for the demo or who doesn't have a custom firmware installed or whoever collects or WHATEVER want it?

EDIT:
haha wow. Some people will do anything for a quick buck.

Torte Nov 4, 2007 11:35 AM

This'll be a great game, but with very little to justify its portability me thinks.

I'll take it, sure. How much?

If you ask for one dime more than what any tosser on eBay is selling one for, I BAN YOU~

eprox1 Nov 4, 2007 06:33 PM

How about free. I just posted that eBay link cause I was curious if people were even thinking of selling it, and was kind of surprised that some people were paying around $10 w/ shipping for a 10 min demo.

Just PM me your address or something.

eprox1 Feb 16, 2008 04:58 PM

Just a little reminder...

I played the demo on the flight home from San Fran a couple of times in anticipation. Anybody pumped?

The game comes out March 4th - just a little over two weeks!

eprox1 Mar 5, 2008 12:30 AM

Wow...uh triple post?

So this game came out today, and it's supposed to be absolutely awesome. I was certainly expecting at least one other person besides me to be incredibly pumped for this game, but I guess not :/.

I'm definetly checking it out tomorrow after work.

Grilled Carrots Mar 5, 2008 12:35 AM

Heh... I'll probably get the bundle Psp+GoW. (Time for me to get my very own psp)

Played the demo... and I cant believe the got all that love in a portable. Seriously, it feels like God of War!, still... I didn't like how they managed to get the evasion on the psp, kinda difficult. (Maybe I just need time to get used to it)

eprox1 Mar 5, 2008 12:39 AM

Funny you say that, as some of the reviews I've read have commented on how they feel the dodging works better in this game. I guess they were never fond of moving their thumb to the right analogue stick, or something. I'll try and find the quote...

EDIT: Here we go:

IGN: 9.4
Quote:

Though the PSP is missing the L2 and R2 buttons and the right analog stick of the Dual Shock 2, I dare say that the control scheme here works better than on the PS2. Instead of having to use the D-Pad to change between magic types, you now hold R and press a corresponding face button. This means you won't accidentally trigger something you didn't mean to a waste precious magic, and it also means you can switch between them much more easily. Since there isn't a second analog stick, dodging works by pressing L and R at the same time, which again works even better than on the PS2 pad since you don't have to move your thumb off the face buttons. Each of the control changes has been implemented fantastically and you won't miss any of the missing buttons.
Granted, I'm sure it will take some getting used to, but I guess I can understand what he's saying. I personally am far more used to the older controls, but that can very well change and I won't make any final criticisms/remarks until I've at least gone through the game a bit.

Anyways, looks like another solid PSP title. I need to beat Patapon fast so I can start devoting my time to this.

Torte Mar 5, 2008 07:36 AM

I thought I was used to ps2 controls, too, but I played the demo last year when it first came out and trust me: it IS better than R analog stick evade. I dislike the nub, but it actually ain't too bad in CoO.

ToneDefer Mar 5, 2008 01:36 PM

God of War ist one of the best Franchises of Video Gaming,an incredible Game.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 5, 2008 02:25 PM

I can say the dodge system works pretty crappily.

I'm sure people will get used to it, but it's awkward as hell and you end up not using dodge because you never manage to pull it off when you need it. The R stick dodge worked since it was immediate, it's much quicker to pull off by reaction than holding down two shoulder buttons AND a direction, so all that talk of "you don't need to move your thumb" is pointless.

Dodging aside, it otherwise controls fine and is easily the best looking PSP title so far.

Slayer X Mar 5, 2008 02:52 PM

All I can say is that having God of War and FFVII Crisis Core both coming out in the same month is the greatist month of all time for handheld gaming as far as I'm concerned.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 5, 2008 03:05 PM

I'm not really surprised on that.

eprox1 Mar 7, 2008 02:53 PM

So I thought I'd be all 'hard' and shit and go through my first run on...Hard. I got to the final Basilisk fight no problem, but all of a sudden I can't even come close to killing this thing. What the fuck.

eprox1 Mar 21, 2008 09:45 AM

Just beat the game, and holy shit was that last boss tough on Hard mode. I don't know what was more annoying - the fact that she could kill you in 3 hits, or the fact that you had to sit through that cutscene EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU DIED. Anyways, some questions for anyone else who has beaten it -
Spoiler:
I am kind of confused on what Persephone was doing. I understand her intentions behind everything, but I was a little lost when she was explaining the whole scheme with the titan Atlas to destroy the world. If the tower that Atlas was trying to destroy were to ever fall, would it just absolutely annihilate everything?

Also, why is Atlas ‘doomed’ to hold the world on his shoulders after Kratos stopped and chained him? Couldn’t he just drop it and end everything, like he was initially trying to do?

And I didn’t completely understand the whole ‘why Kratos can never be with his daughter’ bit at the end. I mean, he was finally with her 'spirit' (or some shit) in the underworld, but couldn’t be with her because Persephone was going to destroy everything and his daughter would die…again? What?

I never got a chance to get all of the way through God of War 2 all the way through (as my PS2 broke half way through it). Who were the two gods at the end? Athena and Zeus? Does this tie into the second game somehow, or does this hint at something to do with the third?
I thought that whole mini game sequence where you have to push your daughter away was very awesome. I totally thought for a second that Kratos was going to turn around and stab the shit out of Calliope or something, just to ensure that he didn’t go to her. What an epic game.

Inhert Mar 21, 2008 11:18 AM

yeah that last boss was the only one that I had difficulty with. As for the question:

Spoiler:
I'm having the same problem, I don't know why atlas just don't drop the world. He did wanted to destroy it anyway...

as fort he daughter of Kratos, I think he could be with her and return to the human world, if he gave back all his power, but Persephone was trying to destroy the whole world, so he could let her do that. So to save the world he kind of doomed his own daughter...

Chains of Olympus is a prequel of GoW1 so at the end I think it's Athena for sure and Helios. The ending is exactly when the first game start if I'm not mistaken because I remember the area, where Kratos fell at the end, to be in the first one.

I'm not an expert for the God of War story but that's what I understand from the game XD

Heh, that was the same thing that irked me. I wasn't so upset at getting killed quickly but having to watch that scene over and over again just to get back into the fight added insult to injury. Thankfully they threw a restart point in the middle of the battle, because if not I don't think I'd even bother replaying this again.

dagget Mar 27, 2008 12:17 AM

Just recently got this and have to say I'm overly impressed with it so far. It took me a few minutes to get the hang of the controls (namely evading) but it feels just about like the other games to me.

I haven't gotten all that far in (just got to Marathon) but I'm having such a blast playing this. I hope it's not extremely short and is over before I know it kinda like Silent Hill Origins was. :(

QuentinT Apr 14, 2008 04:51 PM

This was a really cool game, its too bad its short as hell.
