Official XBLA thread. Complain about the new price points but buy the garbage anyway!
This is half of the subject matter of that old thread that was recently destickied. Hopefully, with a tighter focus, this can be kept up to date and relevant.
This is the official Xbox Live Arcade thread. It's purpose, as such, is to discuss any and all XBLA releases, information, or updates. This will hopefully keep down on threads like the Wing Commander one that gets all of 5 responses and will also be a good one stop thread for information. Anywho, let's start. This week's game is Aegis Wing. Quote:
More screens Apparently, this was designed by three interns, which is pretty neat, in that they actually are getting it out on XBLA. It's great exposure. Oh, and it's free. Score. It'll give us something to play while we wait for the Halo 3 beta download to finish, I guess. ---------------- Other newish news is that a version of Bomberman is due out in June. It's gonna support 8 players. This sounds like hot uber sex. There's also DLC planned, and we've got screenshots and video. More info, courtesy of GAF. (Sorry I couldn't find a source that didn't blow ballsack). Quote:
---------------- Prince of Persia remake confirmed, by the way. Quote:
Basically it's the first PoP game, with new and improved MAD GRAFIX, and some new moves for the Prince. Ok, this was...not what I was expecting. Sure, the first PoP is fun, but I dunno if I can stomach another remake of a game that doesn't have the added benefit of online multi. I guess we'll see, though. |
The first Prince of Persia also only takes about an hour to complete when you know where you're going. I fail to see how the addition of "New moves" can make it any better.
|
I'm in a similar boat. While the original was great, I don't see how it'll have much staying power on the Arcade, and I'm not that excited for it if it's just a graphical overhaul and doesn't have anything in terms of multi.
I dunno how I forgot this, but Soltrio Solitaire is coming this Wednesday along with Aegis Wing. Quote:
10 bucks for a gajillion kinds of Solitaire sounds like a horrible, horrible deal, since most of these are available free on every PC ON THE PLANET. Also multiplayer Solitaire = what. It also drops tomorrow, but I can't picture it being terribly popular. I guess we'll see. |
Fuck you guys.
http://media.teamxbox.com/games/ss/1743/1179177027.jpg I'm going to buy an Xbox 360 liek NEXT WEEK because of this. And you need fucken online multi or some shit to buy a remake? Fuck you. It's a bloody single player game. |
I'm new to the XBL scene, so I'd like to say hi. Here's some of my input on some of these games (that my brother has purchased or gotten for free):
Aegis Wing: Not that great in my opinion but still pretty cool (because its free). One my major beefs is the lack of a powerup for your normal gun. The enemies are pretty lame. I don't like the overall slowness of this game (kinda feels like Jade Empire's minigame). It's cool though, because it's a shump...those are non-existent nowadays (in the US...Raiden III came out for PS2, but this has little relevance). SotN on 360=<3, but freeze/crashes=:(. Anyway, whenever Ikaruga comes out on XBLA (well, if it ever does), I'm totally gonna get it. Mainly for leaderboards. Live Arcade is pretty cool. Hope to play some of you sometime. |
You get what you pay for with Aegis Wing. It's about on par with some freeware shooter you could get on the Internet. It's fun for a few minutes, but not enough variety or challenge to make it a lasting classic.
Worms is where it's at on XBLA. I really need to start playing more online. |
Quote:
|
I guess you can't set up a Silver account to download a free game?
|
The game isn't region locked or gold only. A Silver account would allow you to download it, yes.
And Aegis's singleplayer is lacking, but the multiplayer makes the game much better. |
I'll have to get involved in a multiplayer match, then. It does seem like it would be more fun that way.
|
More useless as hell retro shit no one cares about this week.
Quote:
Quote:
|
If they go retro, they need old school PC games like Hexen, heretic, wolfenstein, ultima, etc.
|
Doom was an excellent choice, both because the game is a timeless classic and because the deathmatch is still entertaining. I dunno if I could get behind Hexen as much, but retro PC titles would be a welcome change from the swarms of Namco and Konami arcade titles we see dominating the retro section of the marketplace.
|
If Rush 'n Attack were being released on Wii VC (the original NES version), then I'd be happy, but I've played the arcade version. It's as retarded as Contra was. Graphics didn't mean shit with bad gameplay and music. Sorry, Microsoft, you'll have to do better than that.
Of course, it has been a few years, and I may have forgotten how bad it was, so I'll just download the trial version and see if my evaluation is indeed accurate. Xevious, I still never, and I mean NEVER got to play, even on Star Fox Assault (can't get all Silver medals, still). Frankly, I still love a good shmup, so I'm willing to try this out, since it has very high ratings among many people here. |

|
Whoops, posted in the wrong thread this morning. I plan to download Mad Tracks tonight, along with the new content for Worms that came out today. Much fun will be had by me.
|
Yeah, the worms content adds a fair number of new voice packs. 22, I think. The space level is also a nice change. A shame it didn't come with new background music though.
The more I play Mad Tracks, the more I like it. It's fantastic, and the multi we played last evening was HILARIOUS. Especially the bloody foosball. A shame that the demo alludes that the other race packs will be available in the game you purchase, but are actually DLC to be released at a later date. The wording is kinda funny, so this is just a warning to potential buyers. You only get the one content pack with your purchase. Not all three. Also, some updates on the only game people should be really giving a shit about; Bomberman. http://www.hudsonentertainment.com/g...d=75&console=1 Looks like this page will be updated weekly until the thing drops. Right now we've got levels and gimmicks, and a bit on the modes. It's also revealed that camera support will be in, so you can :meatspin: any assholes unfortunate to lose to you. Y'know, they could charge 1200 points (15 USD if you live in the states) for this and I'd still buy it. |
Hey is Prince of Persia out yet? I need to know when to buy an Xbox 360! What about Ikaruga? I just gave my Gamecube copy to Hybrid Hunter.
|
Rumor has it that Prince of Persia might be coming out next week, but I haven't heard anything about Ikaruga. This week we're stuck with an HD version of Pacman for $10. Wow.

The Ikaruga bit was a rumor. I'm not sure though, because I don't know if the source is super-credible or whatever.
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=72965 It's pretty old, so take that with a grain of salt. As of now, no Ikaruga, if there ever will be one. |
If it's not Ikaruga, there's rumblings of an important shooter in the pipeline. We'll see if that turns up anything, though. We can only hope.
What no one mentioned so far is that the "other" piece of XBLA content this week was some update for Small Arms that adds achievement points. No one cares though since Small Arms is utter trash. Next week is also rumoured to be Carcassonne. Unfortunately these things are hard to know for certain until very shortly before they drop. I don't give a shit about anything until Bomberman, though. |
Quote:
Bring on Bomberman. |
JUNE THIRTEEN! Shit that's today! Shit shit shit. I promised myself no more game consoles until I clock ALL MY GAMES.
Quote:
|
So I finally managed to get the Ace Achievement on Aegis Wing, is there any talk of perhaps an Aegis Wing 2? I wouldn't mind paying for it either if they ever decide to make one.
|
Wednesday is Band of Bugs.
Quote:
|
Turn-based tactical strategy game? SHIT I hope they don't fuck this up, I love that style of game.
|
It's weird. I first heard about this game a *while* ago (when it was known as Bugs of War), but I didn't realize until sometime last week that it was close to completion. There was a small article on it in IGN or something. I was under the impression that we wouldn't see it for a while, ala Castle Crashers or something.
Looks potentially really awesome, if the level editor is as powerful and easy to use as it's being said it is. Achievement list: Quote:
|
I really am the only one talking in most of these 360 threads, aren't I?
Aw well, one of two pieces of next week's content has been announced. And no, it's not the game. Instead, we've got Lumines Content. Quote:
|
Has anyone actually tried the Band of Bugs multiplayer? The single player demo was enough to pique my interest, and a good multiplayer would seal the deal for me.
Also loling at Lumines milking even more cash from the saps that bought it. |
Hey skills do you know when bomberman is coming cause it looks pretty sweet and i cnt wait to pick it up
|
Quote:
Still, the prices are ri-fucking-diculous. You think they would have learned from the last batch, since Puzzle/VS. CPU/Genki Rockets didn't sell a whole fuck ton. At 600 for both they'd be a no brainer, but for 950 it's seriously pushing it. That's like 15 bucks Canadian. Quote:
As for Bomberman, It'll be July sometime, I imagine. Hopefully the first week of it, but we'll see. |
I dwnloaded band of bugs today and i think its a pretty good turn based strategy game. The graphics are pretty good and the setup works great. The story is kinda goofy but still kinda funny. Achievements are easy to get and online/mulitplayer is pretty fun(specially pushing your friends off the map). Its a good game id recommend getting it for anybody who was wondering.
|
Did anyone else buy Carcossonne yet? I played a few matches last night, and I think it's my new favorite arcade game. It's completely different from Catan, and the game moves a lot faster too. Definitely one of those games that's easy to pick up but difficult to master.
|
Quote:
|
I don't know, that game might be fun to play again. Though, it would be better priced at 200MS Points... ;)
|
Didn't make an entry this week because of E3 and because the games were so bullshit. This week, we had Sonic and Golden Axe. Woulda been swell if, y'know, these weren't on every compilation disc known to man already. So, :noonecares:.
However, here's where :EVERYONECARES:. Major Nelson has said "Sup bitches, Bomberman's next week." Fuck. Yes. |
Poor Yie Ar Kung Fu. Totally blown away by Bomberman. Why would anyone buy that anyway, if it's the same title that's on the Konami Arcade Classics DS? Completely worthless.
|
After Wing Commander last week with Super Contra, we've got Spyglass Board Games and Marathon this week. Frackin' awesome.
Quote:
|
Track and Field today. Yeah, THAT Track and Field. I'm as uninterested as you are.
Quote:
|
Rest of August should definitely be more interesting.
|
The rest of August is War World, Ecco, and Hexic 2. We're not getting Puzzlefighter or anything terribly awesome for a bit, now. (Not entirely discounting any of those games, but they certainly aren't on my must buy list)
|
The only thing on that list I could see myself buying is Hexic 2, mainly because I didn't have Hexic on my 360 (core at first), even though I've played it numerous times.
Damnit, Capcom, WHERE'S MY SSF2T??? Psikyo, WHERE'S MY STRIKERS 1945 SERIES??? |
War World looks fairly exciting, I think.
Have anyone got Spyglas Games? I could see myself playing this, but then again... |
On the topic of Marathon, anyone who wants to play the rest of the trilogy should look here: http://trilogyrelease.bungie.org/

Quote:
Anyone else excited about Speedball 2 getting an XBLA release. I used to love that game. I so hope it has aged well. |
Quote:
Anyway, that does sound like an awesome thing. Needs more Ikaruga, however. I never did spend a lot of time in that game (10-15 hours?) and I didn't 1cc it. I hope the achievements are something good, and not "absorb x amount of bullets" or "defeat x boss within x time". In other news, Bomberman LIVE is the best game available on XBLA. Any questions? Apart from abuse of dangerous bomb + full fire, I find nothing wrong with it. At all. Hell I don't give a shit if someone has remote control bombs, at least it won't dominate 75% of the map in one blow. But fucking awesome game. I mean, they even included color mode (oh, I'm sorry, I mean "zombie" mode) where you have to take over as many floor panels as possible. Excellent shit. Speaking of Bomberman, this game seems to attract a decent amount of girl gamers. They aren't very good though. |
Since you mentioned Ikaruga, I wonder what the chances are of Radiant Silvergun also showing up. Silvergun was the the better game of the two, and with Saturn emulation having approached a point where that game is now 99% accurate, it seems really feasible to me.
And where the hell is Every Extend Extra Extreme? Mizaguchi said it's coming to XBLA months ago and all we've seen so far is a hint of it in an E3 video. I also hope Rez makes an XBLA appearance too. |
Quote:
|
What's fun is a combination of the two. If one person has a dangerous bomb, you can always take them (and yourself) out by laying a remote bomb next to it and instantly detonating. Then you just have to hope you can come back in via Super Revenge Cart and win the match.
|
Quote:
Quote:
I played a game last night where there were 3 full fires and 3 dangerous bombs. People were constantly dying. It was just too much. I can't host matches myself (some firewall issue, don't know how to fix) but I definitely wouldn't want more than one per map. |
Quote:
|
Quote:
I think you collect for the wrong reasons, boy. And nothing's been said or heard about in regards to Ikaruga for ages now. It's almost safe to say that it's a rumour that hasn't panned out. I wouldn't totally discount it, but it's appearance would be a considerable surprise. |
Quote:
|
Quote:
I have a major issue with originality however. I imported Chrono Trigger and an American SNES to play it, and refused roms. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences ever. Quote:
|
Yes, because heaven forbid that people who may not have got the chance to play these games originally should do so now. Or that people who enjoyed them but long since lost/sold their copies/machines shouldn't get a chance to re-enjoy them. Sorry Lix, but that's a crappy attitude. Games are for playing, not hording and fretting over the value of.
|
That isn't what I said at all.
Although, if everything becomes downloadable content, people will have less physical gaming material in the future, which isn't right. Less and less people will become interested in games, and more interested in what's "available to purchase via Microsoft Points/Virtual Console points" and what "virtual items" they can buy next. I'm not even going to bother bringing piracy into the picture, because that's already chewing through the meaning of having an original copy of something day by day. |
No one's arguing for or against the benefits of having a physical copy instead of a downloaded copy. What people have an aversion to is you saying the latter shouldn't exist so you have a higher valued item. I coudln't care LESS if some of my high valued games turned out to be worth 5 fucking cents tomorrow if it means that more people got to play it. The monetary value is unimportant. Games are not a worthwhile investment to turn around and sell later. And your argument about people being less interested in specific titles doesn't make sense.
And just because it shows on Partnernet doesn't mean it's destined to hit. Partnernet has given us too many rumours that hasn't played out to trust it entirely. Especially considering Ikaruga was nothing more than a title entry in the list. There wasn't any content under it. All we're basing this on is a name. Wait until someone somewhere shows some footage, or it's actually ANNOUNCED, or something of that nature. |
I did some reading into the whole X-Box Live Treasure shooter thing. Found something a bit more concrete at 1Up.com. I'd like to play Radiant Silvergun in some form that wouldn't break my wallet. I think any player's top concern should be sharing the experience with other players, not necessarily breaking even on an investment. Kind of symbolic of why other interests look down on "gamers." I know many readers who will give books away, but given the price of the hobby... it isn't too realistic to expect a player to give a game away or purchase a game for another person.
Not that it doesn't happen. Because when it does, well, shit, fucking awesome. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3156213 And in case you just want to skip to the point: Quote:
|
Yeah, I've seen that before. The thing about that interview is it confirms fuck all for Ikaruga, and it sounds like he's far more willing to do an original title for the service than port Ikaruga again.
Fan speculation on this matter overrides most common sense though. |
We can always hope. That or Saturn emulation will reach an apex of perfection and I can finally start sticking it to the man. The bankrupt, really awful developer at this point in time Sega-Man.
|
Radiant Silvergun can be emulated now. No slowdowns on gameplay or videos etc, depending on the computer being used and stuff. I don't really like the game all that much though so whatever. I just love seeing it being sold on Play-Asia for $220 used or $500 sealed. And $150-29356236 on ebay. I can get one from Japan ranging from 8000-15000 yen, and even that's overpriced.
There was a patch to fix the lv2 bug of Ikaruga in the Chankast emulator, but since I already own both JP DC Ikaruga and GC Ikaruga, I don't care. I'd imagine it to still be hell to play on. (It's not like Ikaruga needs to get harder, especially against the Stone-Like). |
Quote:
|
I'd buy Hexic 2 if it wasn't $10. Unless it's some great surprise like Pacman CE turned out to be, the game is worth at most $5.
|
I rather like Hexic, but I'm not sure Hexic 2 will be worth 800 MSpoints. Will have to see I guess. Might pick it up if it's got some interesting new features/modes.
I'm guessing people have heard the news about 3D Realms wanting to bring Duke Nukem 3D to XBLA (article). Not sure I'd buy it, but could be an interesting addition. |
Quote:
Radiant Silvergun runs almost flawlessly. The music plays back about 30% too fast, a problem with all games that use the Cybersound wavetable software, but other than that... it's just waiting for poor saps to get their asses kicked. |
So. Moving on.
This game won an XNA programming contest put on by Microsoft, which means it's probably going to make it's way to XBLA. I'm not too thrilled about mass blood, but it shows what they can do with 2D on the current consoles. It also looks like it could be fun.
|
I notice Hexic 2 is out today on XBLA. Anyone else thinking of checking it out? I rather enjoyed the original Hexic HD, and the idea of the battle mode and online play sounds like it could be worth a look.
|
I'm going to download the demo tonight, if I remember, but I doubt it'll be worth 800 points.
|
Yeah, the 800 points thing is what's slightly putting me off. 400 points I'd get it no question, but I'm hoping the battle mode will justify it. I'll definitely check out the trial version regardless and I imagine I'll get it.
Additional Spam: OK, so I played the trial of Hexic 2 last night, and perhaps I won't be bothering after all. The battle mode just feels messy and I never really felt in full control of what was going on. I shall stick to the original Hexic me thinks. |
Quote:
|
Jeff Minter had been writing a column in EDGE, mainly about the development of Space Giraffe, over the last 6-ish months. An interesting read and made Space Giraffe sound like an interesting prospect. I'll certainly be playing the trial and for 400 MS points I could see myself buying it.
|
Yeah, 400 points doesn't sound that bad. And you're right, the columns in Edge was interesting reads.
|
Actually it's going to be 800 points. Seems the 400 points thing was a 'typo' by Minter on his blog (something has me feeling it wasn't a typo and M$ have decided they can get more money for it). See this Eurogamer article for details.
That's a bit disappointing, 800 points makes it far more of a 'maybe'. |
Why is it that I'm frustrated in the lack of new killer releases for XBLA recently?
|
Since when? It's been a pretty good time of late if you ask me, stuff like Bomberman Live and classics like Track & Field. Plus there's Puzzle Fighter HD coming up (so looking forward to that). I would think we would naturally enter a drier time as we ramp up to Christmas and more big titles are coming up. Maybe not though.
|
Okay, Space Giraffe IS 400 points, and well worth the price. I haven't played more than a couple of levels, but the humour, while not very prominent, is quite entertaining.
"A Winner Is You I'm sorry, but our giraffe is in another castle" And the end of level ratings are quite good too. None of this S, A, B, C and such crap, no, instead it's "You are a bit crap". |
Super Puzzle Figher II Turbo HD Remix is arriving this Wednesday: link. Chalk that up as one I'll most certainly be getting, unless somehow they've managed to cod up the gameplay, which seems unlikely.
Also, Bomberman Live is getting an expansion pack - hell yes. Quote:
Sounds like something I may just be picking up, given how awesome Bomberman Live is, especially if it's 250 points. |
Awesome, I'll definitely be getting both of those.
|
If I remember right, the original plan was to roll out Bomberman updates at the 30, 60, and 90 day marks after it's release. Has it already been a month? I guess that's about right.
I dunno if they're gonna stick to that, or if the plan's changed, or what. But the more the merrier when it comes to this one. |
How do you guys up there actually ENJOY Space Giraffe? I'm not saying the game is bad, but... it's just so weird. Like, incredibly weird. Incomprehensibly weird. I mean, even Katamari was accessible, but something about Space Giraffe makes me feel like there's this colossal joke that I'm not getting.
|
Don't feel bad; I didn't get it either. I tried the demo and it was just...odd. The humor was good, but there's such a thing as too retro. It was difficult telling the difference between bullets and powerups, and the whole thing just looked like a big mess.
|
Not only do we get SPFIIHDR and the Bomberman Live expansion today, no we also get Streets of Rage 2:
Quote:
This could make for an expensive M$ points day if Streets of Rage 2 holds up (I remember enjoying it a fair amount when younger). |
Quote:
|
Well there you go, be frustated no more. ;)
It's definitely an awesome day for XBLA. Not as much for my wallet, but that's a temporary pain I can easily get over. |
|
Excellent, Sonic 1 was a blast to play through again and I have fond memories of 2. For 400 points that could be another worthy addition to my ever growing XBLA collection.
|
Holy SHIT. This is one of the best weeks ever. Between Puzzle Fighter and the SURPRISE RELEASE of Streets of Rage 2, my wallet is going to be raped this week. :(
I like SURPRISE RELEASES, Microsoft, do more of them. |
Gee, I thought my bank account was going to take damage enough with DistorteD, Blue Dragon, and DW Gundam this week, but I see now I MUST get SoR2 and SPF2T.
Damn you Microsoft, it's at least 80% your fault I'm gonna go broke this week. And then Sonic 2? Aiyee.... |
Hmm, I'd heard that War World was due this week. Next week, perhaps?
|
It was originally scheduled for August. I am unsure of what it's status is now.
|
Has anyone else had any trouble with finding matches through the custom match search in SPFIITHDR? Last night, if I selected custom match under ranked games it seems to lock up on the 'refreshing' message. Most irritating.
|
Indeed, the first few times I ran the custom match filter, it did that. However, later on (and ever since), it started working fine. I figured it was a problem with the matchmaking server. Is it still an issue?
|
Not tried it yet, been at work. Will give it a go in a bit, but fingers crossed, as you say, it was a server issue that's been sorted now.
Additional Spam: Quote:
Additional Spam: Woo, three posts on the trot, but this seems a worthwhile mention: Quote:
Also, they've announced next week's XBLA releases: Cyberball 2072 and Fatal Fury - [ source ]. |
The demo of Small Arms failed to impress me, but I'll definitely be picking up Dig Dug, and maybe Zuma. <3 Dig Dug
|
I think I'd be inclined to give Dig Dug a play. Might have a read up about Zuma, as if it's half decent, for 200 points you can't go too wrong. Like you I wasn't impressed by the demo of Small Arms either.
|
Dig Dug would be good for 200 points, but Zuma has about 80 billion free flash versions.
Small Arms was a disappointment. Like Smash Brothers except impossible to follow and you spent way too much time getting ammo. |
I've already got Magnetica for DS, which I think is the same thing as Zuma, but I don't get acheivement points for that. :)
As for flash games, I don't play any games on my computer, so that doesn't matter to me. |
Well, if you want Zuma achievements, they're not easy. Most of them are for going through the "story mode", but those levels get really hard really fucking fast.
|
How hard? Hoth hard?
|
Hoth wasn't even hard you fucking poser.
Or was that Mo0 that was complaining about Hoth. I don't remember but whoever it was sucked at Lego Star Wars, ok. EDIT: Confirming that it was Mo0 and that he sucks. |
Definitely not me, chief.
Good work catching the implication I was making, though. I'm impressed. |
Look, it's not my fault that it is a highly kept secret that you are capable of failure on a Mo0 level at times.
|
Y'know, I'm sitting here, trying to think of an insult that's possibly worse than that, but I can't come up with shit.
Time to become an hero. |
You know, I kinda feel bad now after realizing what I just said. Nobody should be compared to Mo0 at games, nobody. I take it back, GELB-1 old buddy.
|
All is forgiven. Can we go back to ridiculing Mo0 now?
There is one Hoth joke and two of us, that works in our favour. |
What is this cockfest.
So anyway Bomberman is filled with bugs: - If you pick up a dangerous bomb just before it's about to explode (I mean JUST before), your character's frame will freeze, and you won't be able to move, and it'll blow you up. - Sometimes an error will occur where people are invincible, and people will still be in the game even though other people are sitting at the results screen. - You can throw bombs over falling blocks which appear in a clockwise position, making the bombs bounce across the screen indefinitely. - Remote detonator bombs can't be detonated if they've been kicked (why the hell) - If you throw a bomb quickly, against a bomb you've just planted, in revenge cart mode, they'll both explode. - On the map with all the power ups in the middle, sometimes you can get "stuck" and can't move, although you aren't trapped between bombs at all. You're just stuck. - You can indefinitely trap people with Line Bomb providing you have enough bombs. Just trap them, kill them, line bomb again, wait until they've stopped flashing, repeat. - Punching bombs requires you to touch the bomb first. Simply bomb punching on the tile next to it won't work. I'm sure there's more bugs but these are the only real ones I've come across frequently. Especially the one where half of the people in the room are/aren't in the game, which fucks everything up. |
Quote:
Shame about the delay, but this is still one I've got my eye on. Loved Speedball 2 back in the day so I just hope it's aged well. |
Speedball 2 and Sensible Soccer remain two of the greatest games ever made. The more old Amiga games come out on XBLA arcade the better really. Here's hoping they get hold of the Bitmap Brothers back catalogue or something similar.

A look at some of the upcoming XBLA games from the TGS:
First Impressions - TGS: Xbox Live Arcade Roundup // Xbox 360 /// Eurogamer EXIT and EEEE looking rather intruiging, but all of the games mentioned sound like excellent additions to the XBLA roster. |
They're doing another limited time reduction on the price of a few XBLA titles: Bankshot Billards 2, Frogger and Hardwood Spades. For more info, follow the link: Limited Time Price Cut on Select Xbox Live Arcade Titles - Xbox
None of them look all that interesting, but if they're something you've considered then a reduced price might be the temptation required to make the purchase. |
Not bad, I guess, but Billiards is still over $10, which I have a problem with. Still might pick it up though, because I'm a sucker for a decent pool game.
|
Except that everyone who's played it told me nothing but bad things, often referring to BB as one of the worst decisions you could make on the service.
I personally haven't played it, but that's just what I've read, and near unanimously too. Can't hurt to demo it first, though. It should be mentioned that Bomberman's getting a new content update this Wednesday. Dunno if any games are going with it. It'd be the first gameless week in a LONG TIME if we don't get anything, but it's also understandable. Who would buy and play some arcade title this week? Especially if it's not something people are looking forward to. Likely candidates are Undertow and War World, though, IF we get something. Just a guess though? |
Equally they might use this week to push out some shite no one's likely to play to keep the string of new releases going.
|
Quote:
Hell fucking yes. This is one XBLA release I'm definitely looking forward to. |
So today a game I've always been interested in, Every Extend Extra Extreme was released for XBLA for 800 MS Points. I grabbed it, and it's pretty fun. Only 6 songs built in, but you can add your own (along with BPM tracking) for a little extra replay value. I've only played one match online, and the person I played against was god-awful. Also today from Q Entertainment...

How the devil is the last post in this thread back in last October?! That is wrong on a whole number of levels, especially given there's been some decent XBLA titles that have hit in the last few months (Rez HD comes to mind, and I'm sure Skills would point to Ikaruga).
Anyways, this is fairly interesting news: Quote:
Coming sometime this summer, it sounds like. Hell yes is all I have to say about that. Will be a bit of a shame if there's no online battles, but if they price it OK, liveable-with. |
Without online vs mode it'd be a pretty pointless release, surely? I don't think the lure of achievement points would be enough to make up for having to pay for it again and the slightly dubious d-pad on the 360 controller.
|
Indeed, but still... yet another game released on Dreamcast showing up on next-gen consoles is pretty awesome. Ikaruga, Rez, Samba de Amigo, etc. ....and now Soul Calibur.
Release Jet Grind Radio, please! And maybe some Power Stone 2, yeah! |
No, it's pretty pointless if there's no online play. I've still got my DC and a Soul Calibur iso, so there's no reason for me to spend money on this. All they're doing is drumming up hype for the release of Soul Calibur IV.
Did anyone pick up Battlezone? The single player is so-so, though better if you use the Throttle Monkey mode to speed things up. The multi-player, on the other hand, has the potential for some fun in 4 player matches (and it supports the camera, lol). |
Quote:
|
Additional reasons for myself:
3. The Dreamcast pad sucks, and I'd much rather use the Xbox 360's pad, especially since it's wireless. 4. XBLA titles tend to get a little bit of polish to make them look respectable on HDTVs, and while Dreamcast was awesome for its time... stretching 640x480 across my 46" 1080p panel looks awful. So yeah, I'd definitely buy it, just like I repurchased Rez and Ikaruga. |

Oh and I finally started playing some matches in Halo with a couple friends, including, oddly enough, K_Tak's younger sister. She was a good player btw. So, I might be available tonight or tomorrow, but no promises. |

I'd be up for playing an XBLA version of Soul Blade (that's Soul Edge for some of you), hell yes. I guess Soul Calibur is where a lot of people will have joined the series, or maybe there's some underlying techinical reason why porting SC across is possible/easier.
I'm raising an eyebrow at a lack of mention of SC's mission/story mode as an included feature. If it's just the arcade mode of SC then it'd better be bloody reasonably priced (which it won't). |

Metal Arms is an awesome game and one I never quite got round to finishing on the PS2 (I've no idea why, I was on the last level and not finding it particularly tough going, I imagine something new and shiny came along and distracted me). Does the originals version include online multiplayer?
|
Shin: If you have the game on PS2 why not just play it on that? It'll save you from paying for a broken ISO image off of Microsoft, otherwise known as 'Xbox Originals'. If the Xbox version had online multiplayer (I can see the appeal there), you'd be better off trying to track down a cheap pre-owned copy I'd say.
|
Sup original Banjo and Kazooie releasing this holiday season.
|
Why they don't just sort their lives out and release Powerstone 2 and Chu-chu Rocket I will never know. If I had those on XBLA I might never buy another game again (Therefore possibly answering my own question).

And hey! Portal: Still Alive!
Even though I have played it to bits, I'll still buy the new one. (Still Alive now plays in your head) |
So I've read a couple of reviews for Braid and this game sounds really fascinating. Since I've just received two 2100 point cards through the post I'm thinking I might pick this up tonight. Anyone else (aside from Mo0 who buys everything) thinking of picking this title up?
If you want to check out one of the reviews here to this link: Braid Review - Page 1 // Xbox 360 /// Eurogamer |
I bought Braid earlier after being so damned impressed with the trial.
The puzzles in World 4 are awesome. Seriously, the whole "your movement moves time" play mechanic is really making me think things through even more abstractly than I had to in the previous two worlds. |
I bought Braid after assurance from a friend whose opinion I respect that the rest of the game wouldn't be anything like the first world and would actually be interesting. It's really a great game, but I don't understand why put the first world as the trial version, it is by far the worst way to demonstrate the game's unique twist.
As for the pricing issue--the way I see it, if it was a PSP game it would be cheap. I just don't think it's a big deal paying a few dollars extra for it. On the other hand, there certainly isn't anything extra to make it worth the 5 extra dollars, if you compare it to other XBLA titles. It's still basically a good game for a decent price. (Of course, the only game I actually play is Geo Wars 2.) |
I was pretty hooked on Braid from the levels they let you do in the trial (especially once I figured out how to complete World 2's puzzle), so I decided to buy the game.
The puzzles and these little secrets that involve using the world's mechanics to their fullest extent is pretty amazing. |
I haven't even played the trial yet... I'll probably pick it up tonight though to see what the hype is all about.
Also, speaking of XBLA games, I can't wait for the Banjo-Kazooie games to come out. :3: |
Man, I just played Braid for 4 additional straight hours tonight, in addition to the three or four I played earlier, and finished it.
The speed run almost seems like it would cheapen the experience of this title. Definitely a candidate for the games-as-art argument though, holy shit. Beautiful. ;_; |
Quote:
Absolutely fantastic game and well worth the money. I've played full-price games that weren't a patch on for quality, imagination and intelligence. Hell, I've played full-price games that were shorter than this too. Forget all the nonsense about it being more points than you imagined it would be, are you willing to pay $15 for a great game and a great experience. If so, buy this right now. |
Quote:
I do find that the entire game is pretty emotionally deep, and I didn't realize how much I cared about what was going on until the last chapter. It's kind of interesting how such a played out concept of a man regretting his past and looking for happyness is cliched as hell and would be played the fuck out in books, movies, and any other medium, but it's actually refreshing to have a game attempt this sort of metaphor laden narrative with this theme so well. Pretty rare to have a game actually play with your emotions like that. It kinda makes the games-as-art argument right there. Pretty much game of the fucking year so far too. |
Some news I'm sure Skills will be pleased to hear:

Also, sometime back in January (memory's pretty bad, sorry.), there was a GoldenEye 007 remake for XBLA in the works, with updated graphics and online play (along with splitscreen obviously) for up to four players, but it was stopped. The only two reasons I've read of so far is that Nintendo and Microsoft couldn't agree on money-related terms and just stopped it, or that Satoru Iwata said he "didn't want to see it on anything other than a Nintendo console" and put pressure on Activision, the current James Bond license holders. 1up - Why did GoldenEye XBLA stall? Kotaku - GoldenEye XBLA shitcanning was Nintendo's fault? (There's more links, but I've only posted these two considering they're related to the possible answers up top.) Three clear screenshots (spoiler'd due to size): Spoiler:
And the only video I know of it (video quality's pretty eh, but you can tell it's not the N64 game.):
Whatever the reason for its cancellation, it honestly sucks. Would've loved to try it at least. |
Bionic Commando ReArmed is the bees knees. A lot harder than I was expecting but extremely fun and addicting.
|
I tried the trial and I must admit I'm very tempted to get it. But unfortunately I've got an odd number of points and MS makes it such a bitch to get the right amount (in this case, just 800 points) to buy a game and let that be the end of it.
And yet if I bought the 1000 point pack I'd have just enough to get Castle Crashers. Stupid ass point system. |
Ok, about a week ago I was harping on to all my friends about how Bionic Commando Rearmed was the greatest game to hit XBLA and that I doubt it will be surpassed for a while.
Yesterday I bought Braid. Once I started I couldn't put it down before I finished it. I don't know the last time I felt such a feeling of accomplishment after finishing a game. It was actually probably Ocarina of Time to be honest. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. My only "complaint" is there wasn't enough of it, it wasn't too short, it's just I could almost play this game forever. |
Saw a preview on Xplay yesterday, for a pretty nice-looking top-down space shooter game. Shred Nebula comes out next week [I think he said Tuesday?] for 800 MSP. Definitely going to check this one out.
Web-exclusive Demo Video |
Arcade games are every Wednesday, actually, and the go live at about 3 AM central time (-6 GMT).
That said, Castle Crashers is next week, and Shred Nebula is the week after that, on September 3rd. |
Ah~ I stand corrected. Still, looks like fun, at least.
...With that and Braid to download still, I'll have to buy more points. Bleh. |
Meteos is coming to XBLA, at least in Japan.
I'm in the minority, but I've always preferred Meteos to Lumines, and the chance to finally play it over the internet is excellent. The only problem is, how could you possibly play the game without the stylus control? |
Well, the game did always have that alternative control method with the D-pad... Since you'd both be crippled in that sense, it might work out anyway. I don't know if it'd be as fun though, the directness of the controls on the DS was a major selling point to the game for me. Still, looking forward to it! I also prefer Meteos over Lumines, though they're both fantastic games.

Don't buy Castle Crashers, it doesn't work. Multiplayer is broken, starting a game is next to impossible. Practically everyone is having trouble with it.
Behemoth fails miserably....again. Hopefully it won't take fucking six months to patch this this time. And that was for a quick fix for a lame achievement, this is for...something considerably more broken. I'm considering asking for a refund the same way I did with Mr. Driller. This is unacceptable. Did anyone even fucking play this thing? I mean, they HAD TO. It's only been cooking for how many years now? Christ. |
Is the broken part in Castle Crashers the online portion only? Cause I wanna buy it with the intend to play it locally with friends or family. If the local multiplayer works, I'm getting it as soon as I get my own 360. Any other errors the game might have that has nothing to do with the online multiplayer?
|
There are a few stage-stopping glitches sometimes that involve enemies dying but not really counting as dead, or getting stuck and being unable to move out.
There are also some save issues that no one has been able to figure out the root cause. |
Well, guess that means I'll need to wait for a patch. Game saving errors is pretty big deal to me.
|
One glitch I did run into is an enemy that froze in mid air, and therefore not die no matter how many times i hit it. Since the level would not advance, I had to restart it. I was able to keep my xp and gold tho.
Another glitch was with Alien Hominid. Supposedly, he cant use any weapon beside his blaster, but I was able to pick up a pitchfork from the ground. I was not able to revert it back to the blaster, so now he is stuck with a pitchfork.... Ive been playing multiplayer with my nephew and I havent run into save issues yet... |
Skills complains too much. I've played quite a bit of Castle Crashers today and online with two different people. Omagnus and I got disconnected, but only after playing for a little over an hour. That might make the achievement for kissing all 4 princesses in a multiplayer game difficult, but the game's far from completely broken. Some people seem to be having freezing/disconnecting issues online, but it's not universal.
The only real glitch I've encountered so far was the mini-boss in the forest stage. Since people and enemies don't count as dead until the combo stops, the game wouldn't let me die when I had 10-15 minions wailing on me. I was pissed at first since it said quitting to map would cause me to lose unsaved data, but that's apparently a lie. Kept all the exp and money I'd earned, and just had to fight my way back to that mini-boss again. |
Quote:
That said, Tritoch got lucky. The fact that it did shit out after an hour isn't really acceptable, despite the thought that "well, it's better than crapping out 10 seconds in" is correct. Also, having that crap out sure makes the problem pretty close to universal, since it, y'know, did hit you. You just got lucky as to when. Considering how long it took Behemoth to fix Hominid's hats, I really am afraid we won't see the patch for this for some time. Despite the "we know, we're working on it" response they've already mentioned on their website. |
I won't deny that it's apparently a bit unstable, but since I played for 30-45 minutes with Nutty later and it never disconnected us it seems rare enough not to bother me. Definitely not enough to classify the game as broken. When I said the problem wasn't universal, I meant how you could barely even start a game without disconnecting/freezing.
You should try doing multiplayer some more before demanding a refund. |
I already have. Trust me when I say you're a lucky one. Read any other forum and you'll see it's a pretty widespread problem. All the major fag centers like GAF, GameFAQs, IGN, whatever the fuck, are full of people mentioning this.
The official website was taking enough of a pounding from people making threads on it, or looking up questions relating to this, that they had their site crash, and they had to do this: http://devblog.thebehemoth.com/floodedserver.jpg It's a widespread problem. Widespread enough that it's totally and completely likely that you will have an experience plagued by disconnects and an otherwise non-functioning game. And as such, you should pretty much not buy it. Since the multiplayer experience is broken. And considering I certainly didn't buy it to play it by myself, there is no value in me keeping it as is. I don't want something that isn't fufilling the purpose it was purchased for, and I don't see the point in keeping it as such. Additional Spam: Go figure, I finally find someone to play with in Toku, who's connection doesn't shit the bed, and we play a good session with no problems cept for one or two bouts of lag. I'd like to try playing with him and a third and/or fourth, and see if it holds up. All my previous games, with Mo0, Omagnus, and the few randoms I tried to join were all 3+, so I'm curious if that has anything to do with it. Additional Spam: Prime Gamer » Things I hate this week: Castle Crashers Here's an article on everything that's wrong with the game. I'm cross posting it from primegamer. I think I covered everything. |
Wow that's uh, that's too bad about that Castle Crashers huh?
I mean, everyone's been circle jerking over it for a year, and Behemoth repays their love with letting everyone pay $15 to become beta testers. What a shame. No seriously, I was looking forward to it. Thankfully I decided to hold off on getting it until I finished BC:Rearmed (oh yeah, did I mention I bought that?) and I didn't get shafted. I guess I'll just hold off until next summer when it's finally fixed. |
It looks like trying to find a game online is indeed broken. I wish it would tell you why you got booted from a game, instead of just saying "game no longer available".
Maybe if you organize it with specific people it becomes easier, but I don't really have the patience to do that. |
Quoting my reply from Prime Gamer:

Joystiq quizzed Behemoth at PAX and got some answers on the online issues:
Quote:
|
It's pretty tough to test all of the different retarded networks setups people have at home without actually releasing something.
Networking, especially the insane topographies you have in many home network settings combined with UPnP/NAT-PMP, firewall triggers, DMZs, and load of other things make for a difficult experience. What's more is that for games networking code also demands a high level of performance so centralized proxy servers are not usually an option. As things stand now, two peers on home networks connecting without instructing someone to open a specific port on their firewall (a nonstarter for the vast majority of people who buy Xboxes) is one of the more difficult things to write "correctly" (which is not really quite the right word here because it is not like math, there is no exact solution). People have trouble with this all the time, it is very difficult to get right and the landscape of technologies and techniques for doing this stuff is always changing. The real question is why isn't Microsoft writing this code once and providing it to third party developers. |
ramoth: First of all, thanks for the baby lesson in networking, but I didn't need it. Secondly, I don't expect 'all' set ups to be tested, my point was more that there appears to be a lot of people having trouble getting online games going. Therefore, even if it's one very particular kind of set up causing issues, it is clearly a very popular kind of set up since it's affecting many people.
Your argument also ignores the fact that many games are released with online networking (across many more than 2-4 players), which by and large work without issue. I've managed to play the online portions of a great many titles with various GFFers, but so far there's only two people I've managed to get games going with (out of about 8 I have tried with). Whilst having Microsoft sort the netcode is a sound idea (they have the expertise after all) and a network API would probably be very useful, in reality it would probably be far too restrictive and make life more difficult for devs. |
Yeah, the excuse sounds like bullshit to me. The only network issues I've ever experienced personally with Live is getting people with funny NAT settings in the same Halo party but even that's incredibly rare. If a game like Frontlines can cope with 50 players at once, all with different network architecture and settings in a full on FPS with the need to minimise lag so sniper rifles are still a viable option, I find it hard to believe Behemoth couldn't manage to make a stable game for four people.
Although thinking about it, do you connect to a dedicated server in Castle Crashers or are you essentially reliant on a direct connection to the other people because that might explain the piss-poor connectivity. This might put off smaller developers from including too much online stuff if they're going to need to shell out for a bunch of servers to ensure people can play the damn thing. |
Frontlines may be different (though I didn't think it was), but pretty much all Xbox Live games use direct connections with one of the players acting as a host, which is why you get host advantage issues in some games (such as Gears and the shotgun). It's one of the things people raise when asking what it is you're paying for when you sign up to Xbox Live Gold, since a player is still relied upon to act as the server.
|
No, Kaos have dedicated servers. It's that and only allowing you to talk to four people at once that lets you have 25 a side with very little lag. You can host your own games but the lag is crippling. I assumed most games worked like that.
|
Refund requests must be up, or something. I got given the run around last Friday when I called about a refund for the points for Castle Crashers.
They dodged the question, said they'd phone me back, and what not. I didn't trust that, but lo an behold, they actually did today. Gave me a code for a prepaid 1250 point card. I recommend anyone else who bought this pile of shit to attempt the same. There's no point in everyone suffering because Behemoth is incompetant. Only harm done in the end this way will be the fact that Behemoth will still see +1 sales and continue to think that being full of shit is an a-ok business practice. At least you can avoid them in the future. I'll be saving this for either Vigilante 8 or Mega Man 9. That honestly covers the interesting looking arcade titles for some time now, too. |
Wait, they gave you 1250? If that turns out to be the official response then I may have to call for a refund. I've got 750 points right now, and it's really irritating to know that I'll have to pay full price for some points the next time I buy a game just because I'm lacking 50 points. I'd just re-buy Castle Crashers with the 1200 since I'm still enjoying it quite a bit.
|
I still have access to Castle Crashers (and Mr. Driller, subsequently). It's not like they took away my rights to play the damn thing. Omagnus also still has the permission set to play as well. They just refunded the points, since, y'know, the product is busted ass.
|
Yeah, I love the game when it's local play with some friends, but online is a joke. I've only made it to an actual stage once, and that crashed as soon as the three of us encountered enemies (we lost player 4 during the character select).
In my quest for a refund, I've begun to understand why Microsoft's legendary customer service inspires so much rage in people. The first guy I talked to hung up on me almost as soon as I told him the last four digits of the credit card I used to buy the game, which would scare the shit out of me if I thought he could do anything with it. EDIT: Finally got an online match to work. I was level 1 with another guy while the other two were level 19. Of course, the other level 1 guy lost his connection before we started, so I was severely underleveled. Still, it was a blast and it gave me a good chance to try out the Periwinkle Knight. |
I really am disappointed that CC is broken. Luckily, I was really busy the week that it came out and I didn't buy it...and I still haven't. I was looking forward to it quite a bit, but I'm going to hold out until it's actually finished.
Now I need a new sig =/ |
Eh', the only thing I can suggest is stick with it, Generic. If they start giving you shit, I dunno what to suggest. Stupid Indian call center is stuuuuuuupid. It didn't take too much effort on the part of either myself or Omagnus to get ours, though, so hopefully it'll go ok for you from here on out.
|
Quote:
Hopefully this multiplayer problem could be dealt with soon. I really wanna try this game. :( |
Actually, the best part about RROD is that you go to service.xbox.com now. No Indian call center required!
In fact, if you use the call center like I did not knowing about that site, they tell you to go there instead. |
Quote:
I was able to avoid buying the game in the first place, but local multiplayer seems to work, so I am still a little tempted. I don't have a Gold account anyway so I wouldn't be playing it online, I kinda just don't want to buy a broken game out of principle. Meanwhile, anyone here tried out Shred Nebula? I recommend it (if you like Asteroids anyway). EDIT: Just read about the save issues with Castle Crashers. No thanks! |
Quote:
Fuck the Indian call centers. They're useless. |
Okay, so basically, because the Behemoth announced today that they're trying to make a patch to resolve the game's issues, Microsoft's customer service is refusing to escalate my case and reimburse my MS points. They told me to wait for a patch.
So they're forcing me to pay in advance for a game's full features. Thanks much, Microsoft. |
Oh what the FUCK? I dunno what to even say to that. But I'd throw a veritable shitfit over the phone. I'd tell them that ther'es no point in me waiting six months since no one will be playing the game anymore, and that I'd refuse to leave them alone until they simply handled my refund request properly.
You know who you should ask for complaining tips? Omagnus. I listened in on him phoning EA today over Merc's broken regionlocking bullshit, and he's damn good at it. |
I told them that you had gotten reimbursed (after they tried to tell me they don't do refunds on anything but movies), but he was saying that if a problem has been acknowledged and is believed to be correctable, they won't do reimbursements.
Oddly, he told me to call back in week if the problem persists, as if he was indicating that the patch would be out then. So, I'm going to wait until the middle of next week to see what happens-- if the Behemoth busts out a miracle and releases a patch by then, fine, I'll just chock this up as bad experience and won't pursue the issue further. But if it's not up, I'm going to be seeking those Omagnus tips on making the customer service team squeal. |
Yeah, what Skills said. Until there is a patch, it's just an empty promise. Even if they release a patch tomorrow there's no guarantee it will fix the problem (after all you've already assumed they wouldn't release a broken game in the first place).
You bought the game on the understanding that you'd be able to play the online right then and there, and as such are entitled to a refund because you paid for something that doesn't exist. If the person you're talking to refuses to budge you suggest to them that they put a supervisor on, or someone with some actual authority. |
I managed to finish the game without encountering any saving bugs. I played online on xbl and encountered no disconnections, lag issues, or saving issues after playing for 2 and a half hours with 2 different friends.
I don't get how the game is broken. Either they patched all these problems you guys spoke of or you guys are over exaggerating this as a serious issue when it really isn't. |
Haven't gone online with Castle Crashers yet. Been playing offline multiplayer with friends/family and so far, it's been a frigging blast. I've beaten the game, and I'm trying to get all the weapons and animal orbs currently. I'll try the online, and if it doesn't work, hopefully it'll be fixed soon enough.
And for anyone wondering about Vigilante 8 Arcade: The first submission into Microsoft had a few issues apparently. They've been fixed, and hopefully it's released early October. Wishful thinking though. The Xbox Live Vision Camera is supported for V8: Arcade. Nice feature I guess, but I don't have one and I probably won't be getting one any time soon. Oh, and we weren't the only ones surprised when Slick Clyde wasn't in the main game or first DLC pack. Wouldn't mind getting Slick Clyde and Casino in a second DLC pack, but again, wishful thinking. |
Quote:
It would seem you've been lucky enough in that the person, or people, you've played with have not fallen into whatever random condition causes the problem. For others, like Skills, the hit/miss ratio has been heavily weighted in the other direction. EDIT: Just seen this poll mentioned somewhere. If you ignore the idiot vote category, it's fairly clear that the majority of people have encountered issues. |
Quote:
Same with another two friends of mine. We got dropped the first time we tried, then the second we were all able to play. It's buggy as fuck, etc. Doesn't mean it doesn't work, it just doesn't work all the time like it should and getting it to do so is a pain. |
Uhhhhh I don't see what Microsoft and defective hardware have to do with 3rd party publishers and broken software.

Alright, Duke Nukem 3D was released on XBLA today. It's a good port, but that's about it to be honest. There's no split-screen for either Dukematch or Co-op, which is something I was expecting, and unless I change my mind and buy more points, I won't be paying 10$ to see if online play is any good. Sorry Duke, it's a pass.
|
Quote:
Downloaded Duke3D. I had a little skepticism - this is probably my all-time favorite PC game and I have many, many fond memories playing it on Co-Op. Doubly so for several mods like The Shining. So theres a level of notalgia involved in this for me... The forced "mouse look" is a little weird after having played this game since the day it hit shelves. However, props to the people who ported it for adding the video clip material, as well as the checkpoint ability. The game is harder, it may be because I'm getting use to the new controls but it seems the enemies are firing off rounds at a much quicker pace. Still, this is a great port of a fantastic game and you have to like a game that has an achievement for handing dollars to strippers. |

Apparently V8: Arcade passed the XBLA testing, so here's hoping it's released soon. |
I like Nukem. It's fun and all. I had just forgot how retarded Duke sounds. Yes, his lines are pretty damn cool, but delivered by a dude who's half asleep.

Agreed completely, Garr.
The only fault I can find with the game is that we can't use fanmods and maps with it. Such is life. Still fucking classic gaming. |
Alright, bought Duke Nukem 3D. Jesus Christ, online is a riot.
Played through the beginning up until the level Dark Side (game froze for some reason) on the highest difficulty (every single enemy kept respawning until we blew it up/shrunk it/shattered it. Pretty funny.), with 6 players from the beginning to just me and another person at Dark Side. Protozoid Slimers (green slime that crawls on the ceiling/floor and latches onto your face) still scare the living shit out of me, but it's hilarious watching people dance around when one's on their face. Definitely a good purchase. If anyone wants to go through Co-op or play Dukematch, I'll gladly join when I get the chance. |
For those who care, Vigilante 8: Arcade finally has a release date: November 5th. They also uploaded a gameplay trailer as well.
Definitely looking forward to this. ^_^ |
SLUTS.
Soon visual swirling spew (SPACE INVADERS EXTREME) will be in glorious HD for all those extra carrot chunk-like details! VERY LARGE:
Also Arkanoid! fuuuuck so huge:

I cannot fathom how bad Beat'n Groovy is. Pop'n Music is fun and good, yet they took everything that was good from it and shot it out behind the barn. Interface, characters, gone. The only difficulty is having to use the shitty 360 controller for a rhythm game.
Including Nekomata Master wasn't even enough to save this. |
I just got in to playing Pop'n, and looking at Beat'n Groovy, it just looks like a Bemani knock-off of DJ Portable Max.
It's kind of upsetting that they're ruining a good thing here. Regardless, I'm probably gonna download the demo for this when it's released. I just hope Konami keeps the good music that Pop'n had. I'll be really upset if it doesn't. |
Well, they partially did a decent job. However, after playing through all 9 songs (for the love of), I feel like I partially wasted 10 bucks. Got the 90,000 on all songs achievement, beat Endless, beat Arcade...
guess having played the real Pop'n Music and being able to do up to Level 29's really made this feel like a useless game, and I hate to say that, cuz the US finally got to see Starmine (Pop'n Mixxx) and a song by Nekomata Master, even though it's not Queen's Knights. Sorry, Konami, it isn't the same. Better luck next time. Anyway, Capcom, hurry the fuck up with Super Turbo HD Remix. TMNT:TiT still hasn't been announced, nor rumored, so I gotta play something to hold me over. |
So I just tried the demo. WAY too easy.
They seriously just took the easy bits of Pop'N and decided to call it a game. And 9 songs? The only songs I'm happy about are Starmine, 100sec. Kitchen Battle, and Moon. That's pretty much it. Not worth my download. |
So I noticed Portal: Still Alive was on the XBLA new arrivals. A trial game and the full version for 1,200 points. :)
|
downloaded Age of Booty the other day. Pretty fun game, took me a while to learn how to play it. Gotta love the atmosphere ;(
Still don't think I know how to play it 100% tho http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/...57589_640w.jpg |
Yeah, Sonic, Portal: SA is practically a waste of 15 bucks, and I only say this as an owner of the Orange Box. The only thing different about it are the achievements and maybe a couple new challenge maps. Other than that, it's the same damn game that you could beat in an hour. Only get this if you're a die-hard Portal fan, if you're a big-time achievement whore, or don't already have the Orange Box.
|
Next week is Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 2, and the week after that is Vigilante 8, and sometime shortly after that is Banjo Kazooie, so thankfully we might get the first couple of decent things in a few months. That'd be a nice change of pace considering the last 8 weeks or so.
|
Xbox Originals rather than XBLA but Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is now available for 1,200 points. Personally I think it's a better game than GTA:IV but I'm not sure it's so good I'd want to pay for it again.

OK, I'm looking forward to the NXE (wanky name aside) because it looks like a big improvement over the current dashboard, and it adds stuff like support for group chat, but honestly, who is SO bothered that they're going to fuck with their system to use an unofficial release of it, requiring you to stay off of Live. Why? It's a couple of weeks away, have some bloody patience.
Also, this is for talk of XBLA games, there's a general thread for plain Xbox 360 discussion, so good going there Ryu. |

So V8's out.
So, it's really, REALLY faithful to the old games. So I think I came a little bit. So who else is gonna get it and play it tomorrow night with me? |
The release of Vigilante 8 may be big news, but of far greater importance is that Yaris is no longer available for download. Why do the good ones always die young?
|
Oh god, I miss Yaris already. This is truly a tragedy which cannot be undone. :gonk:
Now I must download V8 immediately to console myself. |

Look man. When I like something, that means it's actually good. None of this borderline passable shit that you seem to be a fan of.

Whatever, all I know is that the more Mr. McInternets here denounces a game, the better the game actually turns out to be.
|
It is a little strange that the title of this thread hasn't been changed to "Official XBLA thread. OH GOD V8 IS SO BROKEN I'VE ALREADY GOTTEN TWO REFUNDS."
|
Well, excuse me for trying to save you guys some money. >=(
|
Unfortunately Skills, when you cry wolf enough times, eventually everyone stops listening and just assumes you have your thumb up your ass.
Which isn't exactly a bad assumption when dealing with you in just about any situation. |
I've asked for two refunds. Out of...50 or so. Doing something twice for legitimate reasons is calling wolf now?
My God. If you're talking generally, I hope you're smart enough to realize there's just as many titles I enjoy as I don't, but no one really cares or notices if I like something, only if I don't. |

Sorry dude, I was referencing some specific in-joke and came off a bit too serious here just now, my bad. |
A bit of interesting news, Sega are bringing Virtual On to XBLA in April:
Quote:
|
YES. Virtual On was the fucking shit in the arcades. I don't know how much fun it'll be at home without the crazy jap-future arcade box/seat but this is definitely a choice in good taste none-the-less.
All I could wish for is that somehow that either arcade versions of Dungeons & Dragons or Aliens Versus Predator have similar fates in store for XBLA. My mind would explode at such news! |
I spent more time playing VO:OT than any other game on my Dreamcast, so this news is fucking awesome to hear. If it doesn't get a NA release I will be quite sad/forced to buy a moon XBLM point card.
|
As thrilled as I am about VO:OT, the arbitrary 1200 MS price point pisses me off. We've already had several DC games ported (Ikaruga, Vigilante 8) at the 800 price, so why all of a sudden are they charging 1200? There's nothing about VO:OT that sets it apart from other DC games as far as I know.
|
You should grab Braid while it's down to 800 points. I'd been waiting for a drop, and it definitely doesn't disappoint for that price. It's pretty fantastic in all respects except for length.
As for Virtual On, the 1200 price point is pretty irritating. I hadn't really thought about the previous DC ports we've gotten until Nutty pointed it out, and it's ridiculous. That said, I'll buy it anyway as long as it's a good port since I love VO in the arcade. |
So a port of an old game is worth 1200 MSP, but not a new game just because it's short?
Did you buy Death Tank, Tritoch? |
Quote:
|
Quote:
|
Just because they can charge more and people will still pay it doesn't mean they have to be dicks and actually do it. If/when oil companies start charging $3.50 for gas, people still buy it, but it doesn't mean they should charge that much.
|
They're a business. As long as people will still buy the product, they will charge as much as they think they can get away with. Their objective is to make money, not make you feel good inside. As long as you keep throwing money at things you think are overpriced they're going to keep being priced that way.
|
Quote:
Quote:
I'll pay 1200 for Virtual On (provided it's good) mostly for Live play, but even the single player will at least have replay value. Braid is short and a one-shot deal with very little replay value unless you enjoy speedruns, which I don't. Great for 800, overpriced at 1200. I'm really not sure why you people keep getting so angry at my thinking this. The length wasn't what kept me from buying it for so long, though. I tried the demo when it first came out and just wasn't impressed enough to encourage the new 1200 price point that's becoming increasingly common. The length is just my thoughts since buying it two days ago. No, I haven't gotten around to trying Death Tank's demo. How is it? It's not like I'm boycotting 1200 point games as long as they feel worth it. |
I didn't even know they were porting Quake 3 to this shit.
I'd buy it for a million MSPoints just to play as the dude that made all the kung fu noises when he jumped. |
So next month it seems Microsoft will be running an awards for Xbox Live Arcade games:

Weren't the Dreamcast and PS2 ports supposed to be decent at best due to the controls? I never played them so I could be wrong, but I remember hearing they weren't worth it.
|
Marz sucking had far less to do with the Dualshock than anything else, but y'know.
Oratorio is pretty much the shit, and I'm happy that there's at least a few fans here to play it with when it drops. And if the retard twins buy it at least there will be a bit of cannon fodder until they stop playing it a week later. |
Is anyone here planning to buy any of the Family Game Night games released today? The $10 price point on each is kind of crazy considering the Wii and PS2 full collections are only $40 and $20 respectively, but I'm considering getting Scrabble if anyone else here is. That one's an NA-only release for some reason, so I guess that counts out PAL people.
|
Quote:
|
800 points for each? Screw that. Scrabble is probably the only one worth the points, and according to IGN, there is no single player mode against the computer. I'd buy Yahtzee if it were 400, and maybe Battleship (though you can't see your ships after you place them), but not for 800. If enough people pick up Scrabble, I might be persuaded.
|
No single player? Christ, it's like they've done everything possible to persuade people not to buy these games.
|
Quote:
Can Virtual On come out already please. XBLA is over once VOOT hits. |
Scrabble sounds like a good investment, though the lack of single-player modes does kind of suck. As does the price tag. :/
I may pick it up anyway, though. |
While the lack of a single player mode is pretty silly, how often would you be playing against the computer instead of other players? Really now. Considering how often it's used, it's exclusion is probably the least of the crimes presented here.
Holy ding dong fuckballs though at the price point. |
I suppose it's too much to hope that Scrabble supports the Vision Camera. The only proper way to distract an opponent is waving your junk around.
|
Something to make Skills happy:

Thanks Omagnus, it's good to have a real source confirm all the dates for the arcade games, instead of the likes of Kotaku spreading misinformation, what with their claiming OutRun was next week, making up shit again like they always do.
Anywho, here's the proper days of arcade release schedule. Quote:
The good stuff is on the second half of the list, but I feel bad for both Flock and Dishwasher. Being put up against each other like that when they're both indie properties to begin with is unfortunate for the both of 'em. A shame. With luck they'll drop at 800 and be given a fighting chance. (Hah, yeah right). ------------------------------ On a note unrelated to any of those games, an update about Space Invaders Extreme for the Arcade. Quote:
Bolded the one thing I wasn't already aware of. Jeff Minter is pretty much the epitome of whiny selfrighteousness and importance, so I just hope we don't get a blog entry from him somewhere down the line claiming the only reason this version is any good is because of his....erm...."art" effects. Or that we "don't get it", or some other horseshit. I'm just hoping he doesn't make the thing a visual mess. Luckily, early media seems to indicate not so much to worry about. Also, should it sell worse than Frogger let's hope he just stops trying this time. ------------------------------ Quote:
Arkanoid Live! achievements. These usually show up relatively close to the game's release. Maybe one of the first ones after the Days of Arcade promotion? Let's hope. I had it pegged for summer. Granted, some stuff can come out during that period that's not on the above list. For example, Fable 2 Pub games came out the same week as Bionic Command during last summer's promotion. |
I'm curious about all the Days of Arcade stuff, but I already know that I'll probably buy Galactrix and Dishwasher. The DS version of Galactrix seems to be a little buggy, so I decided to wait for the eventual XBLA release in hopes that they've fixed a few things. I remember the Dishwasher demo from ages ago being pretty fun too.
What's the difference between Uno Rush and regular Uno? |
Different rules. Basically this is a much faster, combo based thing.
I'll let IGN's preview do the explaining, since it describes it a bit better than I'd be able to. Quote:
|
Having read a few things abouit Flock, most notably in Edge about a month ago I might well pick that up. It looks suitably silly and fun.

So, it seems Castle Crashers is the XBLA game of the year:

If you think something involving Outrun looks like balls, you need to get your head screwed on straight. Its a dumb arcade series put to a dumb XBLA download and god will I ever love it. I picked up The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai the other day. It's a pretty fun side-scrolling hack-and-slash game with old school difficulty. You get different weapons including cleavers, a sword that lets you warp around Nightcrawler-style, kamas, an "arsenal", which is just an uzi with a shotgun, and a good old-fashioned chainsaw. There's also the obligatory screen-clearing magic spells and even guitar solo mini games. You'll have to see it for yourself. Definitely not a bad purchase for 800 points.
|
Good news for those of you who 1) hate buying more points than you need to get a game or 2) want to gift XBLA games. Amazon.com has opened their Xbox Live store, through which you can purchase XBLA games, and they'll email you a code for download. The good news is that games are priced in actual dollars (for the same price as on XBL), and it says you can gift games via email after purchase. It's unclear whether they mean they'll do the gifting for you, or if they just mean you can forward the email with the code to someone else for use. The bad news is that although they seem to have almost all the games, they don't have things that have come out in the past few weeks (Dishwasher, Flock, Galactrix). You can also buy and gift points, but currently only the 4000 points card is available; 1600 is listed as coming soon.
|
I'm more excited about gifting points, actually. My friend always complains when I don't have the money to drop for points for map packs or XBLA games and says he would gift some points if he could. (I've mentioned buying cards at Wal-Mart or something and just giving me the code, but he lives on an air base an hour from anything and it's a bit of a drive.)
|
There's lots of online stores that sell MSPoints and just email you the code though. Could he not buy some from there and email you the code?
|
He could, but he probably just doesn't know about them. I've never heard of any myself.
|
Another question is whether or not you'd be able trust these people with your credit card information.
Anyway. Bought Precipice Episode 1 as part of the sale. Glad I didn't pay the full price, as it's preeetty much a timewaster and little else. I hear Episode 2 is better, but eh. Also purchased Vs. mode for Resident Evil 5, along with all of the Oblivion add-ons that were on sale. Been meaning to do that. |
Has anyone played The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai yet? I'm kind of interested in buying this game because I'm a sucker for old-school side scrollers but I don't know if it's worth the purchase. 800 points doesn't sound too bad for a game either way.

Lode Runner lands this coming Wednesday, too. |
Huh. That's a good question. RR has always just been "brake + turn" or in some occasions to just let off the gas a little.
If you're talking about the Final Route, have fun with that. It took me forever to outdo the fucking AI in that bullshit. It's the most satisfying feeling ever when you win though. If it helps any, I had to do it with the Angelus. The other cars just can't do it. |
So Garou: Mark of the Wolves is coming to XBLA

On a side note, they'd have to just find a way to get 3rd Strike, because Super Turbo and Hyper Fighting, the 2 bigger SFII titles, are already up on XBLA. And I pray to God the achievements, should this happen, are not as stupid as some of MvC2's. I mean, shit, how many people they expect to pull off 100 or 200 combos? Not everyone can pull off them Magneto grab-cancel-tempest-quick attack-repeatandcancelintosomethingelse combos. We're not all EVO players here. |
I dunno, I'm sure I managed a good 70 odd hit combo once or twice and I'm far from being an expert at the game. Anyway, it's nice to have some achievements once in a while which are actually, you know, an achievement, needing some skill to get rather than just a lot of free time.
|
So Lode Runner started off at 800 points this morning, but now I hear they've jacked it back up to 1200. I'll try the demo, but in keeping with the thread title, I probably won't buy it. I played this game a ton on my Apple IIc, so we'll see.

They all have attacks that will just continuously combo someone when you transition into their specials. Plus, I bought Outrun. If anyone wants to race me, given I'm not busy doing something else, challenge me. I'm not the greatest racer, but I'm always up for a race. |
Christ, they upped the price after it had already been posted? I'm still on the fence about Lode Runner. The demo was pretty fun and it seems like a fairly good-sized game, but I just hate this trend of $15 being the new typical price point. I would've bought it right away for 800 points, but unless a few other people here get it for co-op I don't think I'll dish out 1200 points.
EDIT: I was flipping through the comments on Nelson's blog about Lode Runner and somebody pointed out that Flock is only $10 on Amazon today. I think I might pick that up since that was another one where the demo was fun, but not worth 1200. |
Quote:
Also, I agree, the slow shift to 1200 being the standard price point for 'big titles' is pissing me off now. When the games seemed truly worth an increase in price, when they were more full indie games, then I could swing with it, but now it's just become more of the go-to price and that's unfortunate because there's so many things I would have bought on the Xbox Marketplace if they'd been pitched at a lower price point. |
Quote:
http://www.seganerds.com/wp-content/...0090123ooa.jpg |
Amazon has been having XBLA sales every couple of days, it seems. If this keeps up, and they reduce prices on games like Flock that have only been out a few weeks, that may be the best way to combat the price point increase. That said, the Flock demo didn't do much for me.

Hopefully, I dunno. Netcode seems spotty. Could be the people I was (attempting to) play against, could be the game. Unfortunately I was having a significant amount of trouble connecting to other players, so I only can speak of the one match. It went kinda iffy, and the other 8 I tried to join got connection refused. Hopefully this will improve and it was just a bunch of bad luck. We'll see tomorrow, when I'll give it another shot. |
Well it plays perfectly on Player Match, no lag or latency at all. I got to play on two ranked matches and one was ok but the other one was completely unplayable, I could see stuff hitting my opponent but it wouldn't do any damage and his shots would come out of nowhere. I'm satisfied with the experience though, played it for about 4 hours against a friend right when I got it. Now all I need is Garou and I'll be happy.
|
The actual interface for joining games online is a ridiculous mess, though. Pick character first? Then this communal lobby thing? What the fuck were they thinking? It's a bit of a disaster.
I'm glad you found some matches that weren't laggy. I've played about ten online and even playing against people on this continent, I found it to be a bit of a crapshoot. What is your gamertag? I'm absolutely horrific and out of practice, but perhaps playing a game against someone from 'round here will improve my experience with the online, as of right now it's pretty much the definition of  |

Detect, hate to ruin hopes, but usually, if there's an arcade version of a game on consoles, they go with the arcade version, especially in the case of beat-em-ups. Plus, I don't see the Konami logo on the title screen anywhere, so I'm fairly sure they don't have much of a hand in re-releasing this one. Frankly, from what I see, I'd say let's just wait a little while longer to see what else happens with this title, because I have eagerly been waiting for this game since 3 months after the first one came out (when I FINALLY managed to break away from it). |
I read about this on Wired yesterday. The original graphics will be included and it's based on the arcade version with things from the SNES version included. Which likely means throwing enemies at Shredder.

This Wednesday's a threefer, including two that I've been waiting for for a while now. Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid Live? Curse being next to broke and having finals this week!
Quote:

I remember hearing the DS version of the recent Arkanoid was pretty meh, so unless they've made some big changes it probably isn't worth buying. People got the DS version mostly for the paddle accessory. Space Invaders Extreme, on the other hand, is freakin' awesome and anyone who doesn't already have it on the DS or PSP should at least try the demo. I'm not even a big fan of SI, but I loved the DS game.
Zombie Wranglers sounds intriguing enough to warrant a demo trial at least. |
Yup.
The whole reason they got it was for an accessory that was only sold in Japan. What the fuck were people thinking releasing it over here without that. No wonder it's so fucking garbage, eh Tritoch? Jesus shit. |
Fine fine, that was pretty broad phrasing. As far as I know it didn't do very well over here, because it wasn't that great and they didn't bother giving us the accessory. The only positive reviews of it that I saw came from people who imported it with the paddle.
The real point is that Space Invaders Extreme is great. |
Quote:
Fuck this man with an axe. |

If they do this, I will love them forever.

Holy shit that'd be so sweet. I haven't played that game since it was new.
|
The original Perfect Dark is coming to XBLA.
Currently listed as a Winter release date (by one of Major Nelson's E3 twitters, apparently), or TBD as it says on the page. Definitely looking forward to this one. |
Quote:
Also on my things-to-get-on-XBLA list: Shadow Complex (Joystiq entries; Kotaku entries). Combine Super Metroid-styled exploration with Abuse-like free-aim, and it looks like you've got the building blocks of a wnner. |
Well, shit.
Figured I'd post this since it's all over CAG/etc. On the new eBay classifieds thing, there's a guy selling prepaid points codes. Link is here: Microsoft Xbox 360 Live 4000 Points Zune Card - Fast - - eBay (item 370219198406 end time Jul-22-09 14:18:04 PDT) Looks and sounds fishy, and I wouldn't blame you for thinking that, but a bunch of people on both those sites jumped on it since the cost was 40 percent off the price you'd pay normally. After everyone confirmed working reciept of codes I also decided to jump in. Code worked fine. 4000 spacebucks for 30 dollars. He's got only USA codes, but luckily I have a silver USA account so I just dropped it on that. I am saving the points for Turtles and BF1943. Regardless, it's probably the best rate on points you'll get any time soon, and it's legit, so I just figured I'd point it out. |
America only? Faggots!
|
Well I bought one. The feedback is almost perfect, so it isn't likely a fraud. I am waiting for the code now.
|
If they're Zune ones, it's probably due to MS dropping the Zune recently and needing to shift out anything with the logo on it.
|
Quote:
Anyway, where the cheap Euro points at. |
Ha ha ha, what a bunch of fucking idiots. The Zune team were disbanded in February and pretty much every commentator suggested that their pathetic 4% market share meant they were getting out of the market. I'm still not convinced there'll be another after the latest launch, I imagine they're simply chucking it out as they'd already nearly finished building it. They can't really give them away at the moment.
|
For those who didn't catch this before, Garou: Mark of the Wolves has been confirmed for XBLA Wednesday. At 800 points I'd consider getting it if I knew a bunch of friends were going to be playing it, but the odds of that aren't too good, I imagine.
The link also mentions Droplitz, which is a puzzle game for 800 points that looks... sort of like Pipe Mania? Kind of? |
Neither of those appeal to me, but I plan on getting Rocket Riot in the next few days. The demo for that was awesome.
|
Hell yes Garou coming Wednesday. Gonna be awesome.
|
Oh, BZ, check your spam folder for the code, that's where mine ended up.
|
Got it, worked. Wasn't in spam folder. Unban me please.

Also the "break 1 million blocks" achievement is going to take a lot longer than I imagined. I'm about 40 or so levels in (halfway there!) and only have 200,000 blocks broken. |
It seems like it would be a fun co-op or versus game. Tritoch's going to buy it on my 360 so we can both get the game with a single purchase.
|
Worms 2: Armageddon is coming out next week for 800 points. This should be a no brainer for everyone.
(I need that mp3.) |
Why is it every time I see these kinda games, I miss my 1989 Packard Bell computer and Tank Wars 2.5? Seriously... why is this?
Anyway, it's something to consider, but I dunno... Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 comes out next week as well, if I recall. That's gonna suck up some points as it is. |
Does anyone have Garou yet? I would have insta-bought it since now we can play it online without having to rely on something like kaillera, but I'll hold off if no GFFers plan to get it. It definitely wouldn't be as fun for me if I kept encountering BURN KNUCKLERS punching my girls in the face all day long.
|
I've heard some nasty, nasty things about Garou's netcode, if anyone's bit, care to offer up your experiences?
|
Quote:
Now about that dpad on the 360's controller.. |
Quote:
|
All this playing is making me get used to the dpad, now I can pull off moves at the same rate as with the analog stick. It's still costing me a few matches but it'll have to do until I get a real controller.
So I asked my friend to do some ranked matches with me to get those achievements over with and holy shit, it was absolutely terrible. The latency had to be worse than what was getting calculated and the game even skipped frames occasionally. After two ranked matches I asked him to do Player Match again and everything went back to normal, no latency problems or frame skips. I don't know what the problem is but Ranked Matches are fucking unplayable. |
According to Xbox360Achievements, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 got pushed back to the end of July, courtesy of Capcom.
Xbox360Achievements.org - Marvel vs Capcom 2 Now Shooting For End of July Release There's really nothing else in it, except speculation that we'll now see Battlefield 1943 before we see this... well, that and probably a few people who are pissed off when it's not that big a deal to wait a while longer. |
Garou's netcode is 100 different kinds of fucked. I tried searching for matches numerous times, to no avail.
As for the D-pad use, it's at best clunky and frustrating. If you have a stick, by all means, use it. It will take you copious amounts of time to pull off some of the moves in there, such as Tizoc's LP/SP special. My only grievance right now is putting Jenet's Ennui Madamoiselle to work, seeing as it's quite tricky to pull a Just Defend on a D-pad. |
On the plus side, Worms 2: Armageddon seems to play just fine. I tried one match online and although I couldn't find anyone in a search, someone joined my fort game pretty fast and there weren't any lag issues.
Strangely enough, you can also cheat on some of the achievements and get them on the firing range training stages. Killing 6 worms at once, using a Holy Hand Grenade, and using Armageddons 10 times all work there. You could likely grind the 170 water kills and 200 fire weapons the same way if you get desperate enough. |
Sometimes I wonder why I spend points carelessly. Seriously. First, I thought Cellfactor PW would be fun to play, but it turned out to be simply Shadowrun with Unreal Tournament configurations and whatnot. Now, that doesn't mean I hate UT. God, I still love it. However, this, just doesn't cut it.
And then there's King of Fighters 98. Now, I play CvS2 sometimes, which features the KoF/FF cast, including the trio of Terry, Yuri, and either Kim or Ryo (varies on how I'm feeling), but I go back to games like KoF, and it's just ridiculous how much I suck at em. That's another 10 bucks worth I coulda saved up for other games. |
Tritock destroyed my poor Wiseguy Worms tonight, several times over. It's a ton of fun to play though, more of you oughtta pick it up so we can get larger matches. Joining public games with friends is, at the moment, not really a possibility.
So we need private ones. Which means we need more GFFers on. |
I remember being a little disappointed with the first XBLA Worms. I mean, it was fine, but lacked a lot of the classic Worms stuff that I really enjoyed from some of the later titles on the PC. I've not checked out any reviews of this new Worms 2 on XBLA, but how does it stack up?
|
Quote:
|
Sounds like it could be good, how much is it?
|
It's only 800 points, so there's no complaining about the price either.
I still haven't figured out if it's got a way to create custom landscapes, but you can do custom rule sets for matches. I'm just happy to have fort matches, even if they're the lame built-in forts. |
Quote:
|
I know, he'll still ask for a refund after deeming it an affront to all that is Worms.
|
Skills rags on us for complaining about high price points, so he can't have it both ways. Living in a country that's still technically under the heels of a monarchy makes him a bit snarky sometimes.
|
I picked it up yesterday as well, and I'm glad to see them getting back to the roots. I just couldn't do the 3D Worms games.
|
Quote:
|
I've played two ranked matches (one fort, one standard) and 4-5 games with Frank, and I haven't had any issues at all. It's a bit of a pain that you can't really invite friends to public games right now since games fill up within seconds of being created, but a lot of people playing is a good thing.
|
So this week, N+ is half-off. Pick it up if you haven't done so already.
|
EVERYONE fucking buy N+ or I will fuck you up.
There is no better MP arcade game out there. |

That would make it 400 points, I believe. It's really tempting after playing the multiplayer at Mo0's place, so I may pick it up this week.
Also, apparently LucasArts has announced that Secret of Monkey Island will be released next week (7/15). Here's hoping it isn't $20. |
A week after BF1943? Damn. Haven't had major releases back to back like that in a while.
|
Well that works out nicely, I have 400 LOL POINTS left. Thx
|
Trust us.
The size of your giant ninja testicles will be unholy huge by the end of it all. |
Just make sure you can count to 3.
Took us a while just to be able to count to 1 successfully last time we played. |
So, 1943 is completely unplayable at the moment. I'm not even exaggerating. 10 person games have 3000+ pings. It's ridiculous.
I'm going to chalk it up to early hammering and not being properly set up (game went up late on the marketplace proper), but as of this very second I would not drop the cash. I'll let you know my experiences throughout the next 24 hours. As it stands it's a bit of a trainwreck. (Not entirely surprising all things considered but still) Oh, by the way. The demo gives you 30 minutes of playitme and that's it. Resetting/deleting/redownloading the game doesn't reset the timer. You play for 30 minutes and that's that. I'm unsure about squad match functionality during that, though. Apparently you can still try the tutorial after the timer's done. No idea if doing tutorial first eats into that timer or not though. |
I was going to ask if people were going to be picking up 1943, but after that glowing review probably not many people. I'll probably grab the trial at least.
|
It's not a review.
It's an issue. And it's a shame too, because from what DOES work (about 5 minutes of one match I was in) shit was fun and worked well. Granted, that was a portion of one match, of the six I played, but anyway. I wouldn't write it off yet, but as of right this second I wouldn't even bother trialing it simply because you'll eat up your 30 minutes and not get off the fucking beach thanks to lag. Bad Company's demo was sort of like this at first. Completely fucked up, but as time went on EA's side of the equation improved and it smoothed out. But this needs fixing RIGHT FUCKING NOW because it is gutter trash in it's current form. Not fucking acceptable at all. I'll give them a day or two to make some last minute corrections before I write them off entirely. Additional Spam: Ok, so. Let's see. Situation seems to have changed a bit. Now it's less lag and more not getting into games period. But when you do, it's far smoother. It took me 30 minutes to find a game to play earlier this afternoon, but after I got into the server, I stayed for a number of games, and they were pretty damn good. They're apparently adding more servers as they go today, so maybe it won't be so bad after all. |
So I've never really played a Battlefield game before, but this seemed pretty neat and everything, and I knew probably at least some of you fuckers were going to pick it up. So I download the demo this morning before I leave work, and look forward to coming home to check it out.
So now I get home, and it seems like for some people it's fine once they can get into a game, but for a ton of people they can't get into games, and it's super laggy. And now apparently people are saying (and I've seen screenshots) that they upped the price to 90,000 MS points to stop people from buying it? Weird, I checked Marketplace online for me, and it shows 1200, but I'm seeing a lot of people (that I know) that show 90,000, I guess if you've already downloaded the demo you can still "get in"? |
Might also be the marketplace via xbox.com only, that's the only screengrab I've seen of that price point.
Regardless, it's fine when/if you can get in, but it can take you upwards of half an hour to find a match to get into in the first place, and last night it was 3 second+ lag, dunno if that issue is still there. But when it works it's quite entertaining. |
People seem to be having problems getting into matches period, but people that are able to get in seem to be having zero problems with lag or anything now. Since apparently no one is around for L4D right now (which is bizarre for us for a Wednesday night) I'm about to go check it out.
|
I'll join you after dinner. I want to try a squad match.
------ Completely unrelated to BF1943 but TMNT: Turtles In Time Re-Shelled appears to have a release date of July 22nd. Make that THREE weeks of awesome in a row. |
Isn't that the same day as Marvel vs Capcom 2? Brilliant timing :(
|
Could be. I realize the source I used there was implying it via another source so it might be incorrect.
At this point I'm willing to retract that until I'm doubly sure. |
Yeah, the site I was reading was incorrect. Turtles is not after Monkey Island. It's now in August, apparently. Oh well. I also learned that the price point is 1200, which totally turns me off. Would have been a no brainer at 800 but fuck that price point.
---------------- Secondly, +2 refunds. Omagnus and I got a refund for the shoddy performance 1943 has shown. They've had a number of days to improve it, and after the freezing bugs from yesterday (I had three or four, he's had 5), and the fact that I can no longer connect today even though shit's "fixed" according to the news ticker, I just about had it. I recommend anyone else who dove in do the same. The operator won't even question it. I was in and out in 8 minutes on the phone. |
It probably helps that they know you by name now though Skills.
"Thank you for calling Microsoft. For technical support, press 1, for sales enquiries, please press 2, if this is Skills asking for a refund, please press 3". |

In other XBLA news, Worms 2 is fab. Good points are it's pretty well balanced and actually encourages using bazookas and grenades rather than all the sillier stuff that wipes out the screen, the petrol bomb is a viable weapon, online runs pretty quick and there's a ton of people playing although ranked matches are harder to find and annoying since there are a few achievements that rely on them. The single player is fun enough too. Bad points are the scenery editor is pretty weak and I don't think there's a herd of cows weapon any more. Worth the £8 or so they're asking for it though I reckon.
|
Actually, I find the petrol bomb to be relatively useless in this Worms. It tends to blow a small hole on impact and then concentrate all of its fire inside that tiny area instead of spreading around like before. Mad Cows have been replaced by the Buffalo of Lies for the past several Worms games. It isn't quite as handy since there's only one, but it has the same basic effect by exploding repeatedly along its path.
The landscapes are my only real problem with this game. You have very little time to flip through the randomly generated levels before the invisible timer finishes counting down and starts the game with whatever you've got at that moment. It also annoys me a little that they put airstrikes into the ranked Fort settings, but both of those are small complaints. Worms 2 Armageddon is well worth the 800 points it costs, especially considering 1200 seems to be the new typical price these days. |
The petrol bomb is handy if someone is backed up in a crater I find as if you land it in front of them, the splash of fire tends to just hit underneath them meaning they slide up and down on it for the full five seconds and end up in the pit burned out by the flames afterwards. It's a shame they made the clusters from cluster bombs come out randomly, rather than with the momentum of the original shot as I'm sure they used to, as it makes chucking them with a short fuse for maximum spread of clusters (Like in a crates match when you want to blow up a shit load of stuff at once) a bit more risky and reliant on luck. The last Worms game I bought was the first 3D one and I'm sure the Buffalo thing was still a mad cow in that. It's more the herd I miss though, three of those off a ninja rope swing was my trademark attack...
|
Oh yeah, mad cows dropped from a ninja rope were always fun. Speaking of cluster bombs, banana bombs are also considerably less effective in this one. Rather than being utterly devastating, they tend to destroy more scenery than worms now. That may be a good thing considering how ungodly powerful they used to be, but it is a little disappointing.
|
I think they have tried to tone down all the bigger weapons, certainly since the first Armageddon game but then the maps are relatively much smaller. An old style Concrete Donkey would pretty much kill everything on one of the new vertical maps, although I can see it being one of those that gets me the 6 worms with one shot achievement. It's a real shame you can't specify the number of bridges and scenery items like you used to as we'd pretty much always play with two tiny bits of land at either side of the map and one or two huge bridges across the middle with the unwritten rule that whoever went first had to use a kamikaze across the bridge.
One upshot of the trend towards grenades and bazookas being more useful is that I'm winning quite a few matches as there seems to be a lot of kids who can't hit shit with either and don't know basic skills like curling a bazooka shot using the wind. |
I think I said it earlier in this thread, but you can cheat for the 6 worms with one shot achievement. It counts if you go into the firing range, stack a bunch of worms on top of each other right at the edge of the water and then blow them all in. Several other weapon-based achievements count there too, like the one for using 10 Armageddons.
|
The problem with random matches (and the achievement tied to it) is that once someone starts losing, they quit. It shows up as a win for you on the match-up screen, but it doesn't actually count towards the achievement. There's no way anyone will get 17 wins in each category at this rate.
|
Quote:
Apart from the obviously annoying "Do this in a ranked match" ones, the achievements are all pretty decent in this and the kind of things likely to crop up in general play after a while anyway. I damn near won a match with the Prod yesterday without realising that was an achievement but the guy got stuck on a tiny pixel of land and didn't fall in the water. :( |
Prod is hilariously understated, I love it. You first look at it and go "Jesus, why would you EVER need a poke move?" And then all it takes is seeing a guy so... close... to... the... edge...
|
I will gladly spend most of my go pissing about with ninja ropes trying to reach someone to prod them into the water rather than simply shoot something at them to knock them in. Best Worms weapon ever frankly.
|
Wow, a Metalocalypse game is heading to XBLA and PSN.

Did anyone else here pick up 'Splosion Man this week? I hadn't really looked into it before now, but after seeing that it was made by the same people who were behind The Maw I gave the demo a go and loved it. It's basically a simple platformer where all the face buttons cause you to explode. There's even an achievement for attempting to reconfigure the controls to do something other than exploding. I've played the first five levels so far, and it's already starting to get a little bit tricky with quickly rising ice water in level 5.
'Splosion Man is also a pretty good deal considering it's the only Summer of Arcade game that isn't 1200 points, has a 50 level single player (3 of which I assume are bosses since there are only 47 cakes to find), and an entirely different 50 level multiplayer both online and local. Plus, it's pretty fun watching scientists hemorrhage hams and steaks while you run around acting like Freakazoid on fire. |
I played a few rounds of 1 vs 100 last night and it's pretty good fun. The questions are tough enough towards the end of the round to make getting epic scores tantalisingly tricky and I like the way it matches you against three other people so you feel like you're competing, rather than just answering questions for half an hour. My best score was 111,000 odd, fairly short of the 140,000 you need to get on the high score table but certainly above average. I might have a go at one of the live ones if I happen to be in on Friday or Saturday evening.
|
The Live ones are about 2 hours long and can get kind of boring because The One is always a dunce, and choosing a new One after that means you have to sit through another commercial that they've played a million times before in Extended Play. But at least they've started giving prizes away lately. Oh yeah and it seems like a real live experience because they have the host Chris Cashman talking throughout the breaks which is pretty neat.
It is mighty hard to get picked for the Mob, I've been playing since it started and I still only get put in the Crowd. It's kind of unfair right now, you're only supposed to be in the Mob once per Live episode/season and last time there was one guy who won a prize 4 times in one Live game. But I imagine that will all be worked out by the time December hits. Lately I've been getting random network errors, too. Never had problems with the game until the past two weeks, pretty irritating to get kicked out and not be allowed back in due to errors on their part. |
Is Chris Cashman hosting the UK version, or is there somebody different?
|
I think for the UK, the host is James McCourt.
|
It was fun at first, but then Chris Cashman announced during one of the sessions that this was the Beta (which I knew) and that prizes weren't actually being given away (which I did not know). It didn't matter because I hadn't won anything yet, but for some reason that just killed my interest in the game for now.
It's a lot of fun and I like how you're competing against three others so you actually feel like you win at something compared to the thousands of other users competing with everyone else. It's nearly impossible to come out as one of the top 3 from the crowd though, because the way to do it is to mash one of the answer buttons before the answer even appears so you get more points for it. It's like you're almost guessing even if you know the answer to the question. I might consider getting it in December when it finally launches. |
That's a step up from (Emmy-award winning) Chris Cashman then. Poor Chris can't even get his own picture on Wikipedia, and his Emmy is for some local show he did in the northwest. Besides that, I don't think he's ever done anything noteworthy.
They're giving out prizes now, SuperSonic. |
Well I'll be damned, thanks for the info nutty. I might get back in on this.
|
Surely if you mash the buttons though you just get a lot wrong and get no streak bonus? There were some people playing in the beta games I played the other night with an average answer time of like 0.46 seconds and they managed a grand total of fuck all points and one would imagine, got really fucking bored just sitting there for half an hour mashing a button mindlessly.

I don't think that's an XBLA title, Play-Asia has it listed as a retail title.
Really hoping it won't be region locked, though I bet it will be. |
Looks like Mushihime-sama Futari will not be region locked! This brings us one step closer to Deathsmiles, and will definitely be an insta-buy for me the moment it comes out. It should also prove to be hilarious to finally be able to play the game I've laughed my ass off at watching repeatedly, final boss, non-stop, screen covering spreads on the hardest difficulty.

We've gotta hope for a region-free reprint or something. Or say fuck it on the original and turn our hope towards Deathsmiles 2. Super cool news about Mushihime though. Definitely will be getting that. |
Is anyone considering picking up some of the Hasbro Game Night titles this week? They're on sale for half off, which means they're $5 (which is what they should have been priced all along). Titles are:
-Battleship -Connect Four -Scrabble (only in US) -Yahtzee -Boggle -Sorry -Sorry Sliders |
I think I'll pick up Scrabble. I could be persuaded to get others if some GFF people were interested.
|
I'm interested in Sorry, if only to satisfy my insatiable lust for Ludo.
|
Quote:
Tritoch, the main complaint I've heard about these games is that if one player drops out/rage quits, the match ends, even if there are other players left. It's best to play with friends. Some of these games (like Scrabble) seem great for recreating the Uno casual gaming experience. |
Rock, if you buy a 360 just for Ludo then I will buy it too.
I just picked up Scrabble, so hopefully more of you will too. There are no computer opponents, so if you play alone you just get to lay down tiles for a high score. |
I picked up Scrabble, Yahtzee and Boggle today, the last day of the sale. Other than the "one person quits, the game ends" thing, it's fun.
|
I might get Scrabble today, but I've sort of been neglecting my Xbox since I got a PS3. I'm down for some games though. Just post whenever you guys want to gather people for it.
|
I picked up both Scrabble and Boggle, so I'm down for games. Fun enough for 400 points, which should always have been the normal price.

New Perfect Dark XBLA screens:
Still set for "Winter 2009" (page says "TBD", it's incorrect), with more screen-shots coming soon. |
Maybe now they'll have a Joanna model that doesn't look like a moose. N64 era Rare was absolutely terrible at modeling women.
|
Quote:
The only actual "shots" of her are desktop wallpapers. :/ |
Well the renders certainly look different. Her Zero model had an entirely different face compared to N64 Joanna renders and in-game model. And now this one look different from either. She doesn't look half-bad, maybe could use a less box shaped face. Because that is a massive jaw.
|
Alright, the achievements for Perfect Dark XBLA have been revealed, which reveals an awesome fact: GoldenEye weapons are available for Combat Simulator use.
More screenshots were released as well, including one from Rareware's site. This is going to be amazing. Edit: The link for achievements is apparently broken/missing, so until it's back, I've uploaded a screenshot of the list here. Second Edit: And there go the screenshots. They've been uploaded to this flickr here. |
Ha, I like the Act Your Age achievement. I always shot all the wine bottles every time I played the villa level anyway, so it's nice to know I'll be rewarded for it now.
|
Fuck YEAH Perfect Dark. I don't get very many XBLA games but that one will be one of them.
|
Is there a decent source on that achievement list? That's not just The Rare Witch Project? I have been unable to confirm this, and it's somewhat fishy looking considering the fact that there's more than 12 achievements there.
|
Quote:
Weird theory, sorry, but it's all I can think of at the moment. Just as well, I remember the Orange Box had many more achievements than usual (which was justified, since there were essentially five games), maybe they're increasing the maximum amount of achievements for Arcade games in the future (chances are it's being released in early 2010, bar nothing.), or maybe Perfect Dark XBLA was given a little bit of freedom? |
New Shoot 'em up from Squeenix is out today, 0 Day Attack on Earth. It's a dual stick effort set over some real life cities apparently. The trailer looks fun enough and I was going to download the trial version but for some reason my 360 won't download it at the moment. At 1,200 points though it'll have to be pretty special for me to buy the full version.
|
Large leak of Perfect Dark XBLA shots just hours ago, thanks to a leaked build and an eager 360 owner with a dev-kit. Slideshow here.
Apparently the build is dated December 6th, 2009 (as shown in one of the shots). The achievements I posted earlier are real, as well. There's an eight player maximum for matchmaking online, and there are custom games online, but the maximum amount of players are unknown (probably eight as well). Co-op and Counter-op are online as well, two players maximum. |
Looks great, will get this quickly. Last XBLA game i got was Shadow complex, love these big gaems.

...as well as some screens. Hopefully AM2 will toss in some more planes as unlockables... -- Some trawling turned up the arcade game's official site, which includes such information as a complete rogues' gallery and stage maps. One feature that's hopefully being carried over as well is the ability to fly with a wingman. As for unlockables, from the screenshots on the console version's page there is an EX Option menu which is home to a variety of optional tweaks. This menu itself is apparently unlocked by downing the XB-70 which appears in Canyon Grandeur (reference 2:57 in this video); with the various tweaks having their own unlock criteria. |
For those of you who didn't pick up TMNT: Turtles In Time - Re-Shelled for 800 points, this week there's a sale going on for the rest of the week and that game is up for 400 points now! Marvel vs CAPCOM 2 and Invincible Tiger are also on sale but those are 800 points.
I also picked up Chime. That was probably a bad idea because I'm already running on little-to-no sleep as it is and that game is so fucking entrancing and addicting that, really, I may as well have developed a fucking meth habit. Granted, this particular habit only set me back a Lincoln and shit, so it's cool. Should keep me busy until Bioshock 2 comes in the mail. |
Perfect Dark's going to be out in March, and it'll cost you 800 points.

Whoa, PD has lots of achievements for an XBLA title.
Best part is how they all seem fairly reasonable. Also, the icons for mission completion vaguely implies that the cheese might actually do something this time around... |
Hey Guys,
There was this XBLA game shown in a clip in last years E3 conference. I was wondering if anyone knows the title to that game. It was more or less of a spaceship shooter on a 2D field. Think of pixel junk shooters except you are controlling a UFO. From what I remember it was mostly black and white, not many colours if any at all. I know the terrain and the UFO you were controlling were black. The landscape was jagged and you seemed to be going down into deep caverns shooting what I think were alien objects...Yea I know it sounds bizzare. Anyone remember anything along the lines of this? Would really help me out cause that game looked so awesome lol. Thanks in advance. |
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet? |
Yes!!!!!!!!! Omg that's the game! thank you so much :D Can't wait till it comes out.
|
Did they actually show ITSP in an XBLA presentation? Cause I thought this'd been a proof of concept in order to try and get funding for the game proper.
|
I know I saw it during E3 in a montage of whats to come soon. I spent forever trying to find out what it was. Here's hoping that it comes out soon, on their blog they mentioned that they are in talks with a publisher and will have big news sometime in March.

Speaking of avatar wear, I've always wondered how come they don't have a 'package deal' for those outfits that come in multiple parts. For instance, the ST Tools Mk.3 suit and helmet cost, respectively, 320 and 160 MSP; why not also make available the option to purchase both items for, say, 400 MSP? |
I actually won a free code for PDXBLA, but gave it to a friend due to my 360 getting an E74. I'll be getting a new one today at least, and I'll be playing this for a damn long while. A few quick things to note about PDXBLA.
-All weapons, levels and bodies/heads are unlocked for Combat Simulator use. -Having a Perfect Dark Zero save unlocks the old Game Boy Color Transfer Pack cheats. (Cloaking Device, Hurricane Fists, R-Tracker, All Guns in Solo) -There are two unlockable avatar awards: A shirt, and an Elvis doll. -There are in-game achievements ("awards") for various things, such as getting all bronze/silver/gold in the firing range. |
Things I've noticed.
Online in laggy. Coop is an absolute DISASTER. Haven't tried counter-op yet but I imagine it's just as unplayable. Regular online seems janky. It will pause or lag every 20 seconds or so for about a second, and it's relatively consistent like that. It'll seem fine for a little bit and then it'll lag and trip up for a moment. It's actually pretty sad. It ruins the fun of the multi, and I highly doubt it'll be patched anytime soon. |
Have you tried Challenges? Those were the only things 3 of us did tonight, and didn't notice any of those problems. I noticed the pause literally once or twice in about 3 hours of play.
|
We did the first 15 online and it was by far the best experience, but it was still janky from time to time.
|
That's what we got to (FUCK YOU DEVASTATORS) but except for once or twice didn't have those problems at all. Looking around on GameFAQs/GAF it seems pretty split, some people are having bad problems, other people not at all.
|
I didn't have the same lag issues playing online as Skills, but co-op is definitely broken. When we tried it I couldn't move for 3 seconds or so, and then we got a synchronization error almost right after.
|
I'd have to guess the netcode just sucks and distance/host is a huge factor. Since me Goodhand and Phong all live in the same city, probably why we didn't have any problems.
