New PSP-only Final Fantasy fighting game with Nomura Tetsuya's designs.

Man, for a second there I thought they might actually do something great with this project. Ah well.

Does this even mean anything? Dramatic progressive action game? What gives?

Sounds to me like either an interactive novel or just a very generic action game with lots of cutscenes.

Point is, much like Crystal Chronicles, this is meant to make people go "Wow! A new Final Fantasy! And all the quality that comes with that title!" and not pay attention that it's not a Final Fantasy game in any way but the name.

PSP needs more original "true" titles instead of these side-projects and ports.

I'm rather glad it won't be another role-laying game, we have enough of those stupid role-laying games already. I couldn't stand another dose of boring role-laying. I've grown out of childish laying games. Even if it means getting laid by Final Fantasy characters.

Dramatic progessive action sounds fun. I couldn't possibly think of a more generic description.

I really liked Crystal Chronicles though, especially multiplayer.

That description has cut-scene heavy platform game written all over it though.

Hey, you know I enjoyed Crystal Chronicles as well. But when you see "Final Fantasy", a narrative-free, clumsy 3D Gauntlet is not what you expect.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 8, 2007 07:54 AM

No, you expect a criminally predictable plot, nice graphics, annoying as fuck American voice acting and an approach to a difficulty curve that involves nothing more than adding more 0s to the bosses hit point totals.

I mean, is applying the Final Fantasy name to some different things really such a bad thing?

map car man words telling me to do things May 8, 2007 08:02 AM

If it produces titles like Dirge of Cerberus, very much so. And Nomura at the helm, it doesn't bode well.

(not to mention your description applies to pretty much every US released JRPG there is)

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 8, 2007 08:12 AM

(Yeah, I appreciate that and you know me, I still buy all of them. ^_^ )

Black Mage May 8, 2007 10:08 AM

Eh, I'm not really a fan of anything Nomura has done and I don't expect this to change my opinion of him. He's a part of so many different titles right now, I guess I just don't understand why they don't hand this one off to someone else.

Oh well, maybe it'll prove me wrong and turn out decent. I wouldn't mind that so much.

Nomura wasn't technically at the helm of DoC; he did the artwork, but didn't direct it.

I, for one, remain cautiously optomistic. I wonder who'll score it; if Nomura is actually the director, I wager it'll be Shimomura.

Freelance May 8, 2007 12:19 PM

Wow that's a new one. "Dramatic progressive action game."

Can't say I'm too excited about it right now unless I hear more information about it. I would assume it's something like DoC, a game I've never played.

P.S. CC is a blast in multiplayer.

P.P.S. I'm looking forward to Revenant Wings. it looks so cute :3

nuttyturnip May 8, 2007 12:26 PM

Dramatic progressive action = dating sim. Black Mage is finally going to get some action.

No. Hard Pass. May 8, 2007 12:29 PM

We, the members of the RPG playing community, do not endorse or condone Freelance Wolf in any way, shape or form. Comments like "it looks so cute :3" and general furry-dom are not supported by members of this community and we repeat, we do not condone the actions of this person... thing.

That out of the way, CC was awful, Nomura is a travesty made worse by the fact he followed Amano, and dramatic progressive action game sounds like cut scenes in an FPS. Ugh.

Summonmaster May 8, 2007 12:37 PM

If "dramatic progressive action" turns out to be merely a visual novel, then hopefully it's not Amano's art that would be featured. I can imagine people getting turned off by his distinct style of drawing the FF characters. As well, it would hopefully generate a little more interest in the visual novel genre and maybe prod them to bring more of the sort to NA, with all the pre-hype this will receive.

Soldier May 8, 2007 12:58 PM

So it seems no one here has gotten the news yet, but apparently news has leaked out about this game.

Get this: It's a 3D action game starring characters from all the previous FF games.

Yes...like Smash Bros.

Confirmed characters include Zidane, Kuja, Garland, and a "Warrior of Light" from FFI.

If any of that sounds absurd, I agree with you, but let's find out.

Also, they're remaking FFIV for the DS. Yes, again.

Freelance May 8, 2007 01:08 PM

Is it my fault that I think sprites are cute?

But seriously, I love FFXII and want to see a continuation. The sprites are just a bonus.

SuperDK May 8, 2007 02:40 PM

So this game is basically a Tales of the World title. Means it'll probably be cool for fans of the previous games, but not much else for others. I'm going to remain skeptical...

Hope it's not a failure like Eirgheiz (however you spell it). If the play mechanics are good, it might be a decent buy, except that I'll never find another person with a PSP to play against. It would be better to come out on DS with Wifi.

That's easily solved by having this actually use some kind of infrastructure wifi rather than ad-hoc. Of course, this probably won't be the case.

Honestly, I'm kind of split with regards to this. It could turn out to be a good game or something awful, but we just have to wait for screens and more information/impressions on it.

Anyone else see where SE could take this? We could end up seeing a Dissidia for every other IP they have.

Soldier May 8, 2007 04:18 PM

I think they already confirmed that there will be online wifi.

I actually enjoyed Ehrgeiz but it wasn't really a Final Fantasy fighter, just a fighter with FFVII characters to entice fanboys and girls.

But should this turn out good it'll be another reason for me to acquire a PSP on my already forming pile of other reasons. I'd be even more interested if FFIV and FFV characters as those are my two favorites at the moment. (still haven't gotten to playing FFVI yet)

This is basically... horrible. As if Nomura directing another game isn't bad enough, the fear of another Ergheiz is enough to throw me completely off this game. Not to note that there are FFIX characters involved, and with Nomura directing this can only mean that he will totally create his own artwork (The sight of a Nomura-Setzer is still haunting me).

ANOTHER FFIV remake? Even though I didn't really mind the GBA remake, this is really going a bit overboard.

Metal Sphere May 9, 2007 08:51 AM

Well, scans are out now of Dissidia, FFIV DS, FFXII Zodiac job system and FF:CC Ring of Fates for the DS.

Aside from the spiked hair, its not THAT far off from the originals. Heck Hero of Light looks like an Amano work despite that art by Nomura.

Zidane looks pretty hot/cute in the artwork. (Slight girlish squee)

Judging from it, it seems like the promo screens will be some Hero VS the antagonist. Squall VS Seifer? Cloud VS Sephy? (That's a HUGE given.) Tidus VS Seymour? Vaan VS Vayne? Not sure about FF6,5,4,3....

More international editions... Hope the extras are justified like Final Mix though...

Freelance May 9, 2007 09:43 AM

Oh hell, that actually looks pretty good. The artwork I mean. Compared to KHII Setzer, these are a huge improvement. I have better hopes for a redesigned Locke now ^_^

As for the game itself, the screenshots don't tell much so far. It's too bad I don't have a PSP, nor do I plan on getting one.

Inhert May 9, 2007 10:45 AM

wow those screen are nice! and OMG I didn't know they were remake FFIV for the DS like FFIII, that's a must buy for me! FFIII on DS was so good! I hope they'll do the same for FFVI ^^

as for Nomura artwork. He didn't really redesign them, but more draw them in his own style and I like it ^^

I was hoping that FFXII would skip the international edition this time >.>

Simo May 9, 2007 10:53 AM

Dissidia and FFIV DS both look pretty awesome. I care little about CC: Ring of Fates and FFXII International? Bah! I've still yet to finish the current version before thinking about another one.

Soldier May 9, 2007 01:46 PM

Holy crap, it's real.

I don't know if you can call it a fighting game just from those shots, though. So far it has each character fight their respective villain. I suppose you can mix and match, but we'll see.

That art is pretty awesome though, especially Zidane. People will still hate it because it's Nomura, though.

I'm not as optimistic about FFIV DS. That Cecil looks....wrong.

No. Hard Pass. May 9, 2007 06:10 PM

The issue here isn't the designs, but the fact that his style blows. As exemplified by Rikku in Light Warrior armor.

I know you would love to suck Nomura's cock, as indicated by the number of times you use Aqua in your theme, but why do you feel as if it's your noble mission to defend the man?

I imagine "dramatic progressive" is codeword for "LOTTA BATTLE CUTSCENES".

Inhert May 10, 2007 11:38 AM

not everyone like the same thing, as of fact, really like Nomura artwork but I also really like the art style of Amano...

I remember that before a lot of people were saying that Amano sucked too and now it seem to be the opposite...

So beside saying Nomura suck, tou should say that you don't like it...

Nomura is awful. Nomura has always been awful. How he managed to come up with a decent design like Setzer, I'll never understand. Every fucking hero he makes needs to have odd-length pants/shorts, a chain wallet for no reason and big feet. He's a joke.

Interrobang May 10, 2007 03:36 PM

What?

"Ppl like him" is not even an argument. If Denicalis thinks he sucks, the number of fangirls who would whine their heart out is not going to make him reconsider his position.

Kairi Li May 10, 2007 03:50 PM

Yeah, but this time I don't see much modifications in Zidane and Light warrior. So what the hell is there to complain about?

Oh right, because Zidane has anime looking eyes and looks nothing like Amano's sketch... No! It's how hes gonna look in the actual game. Amano has beautiful gorgeuos artkwork no doubt, but we all know it will lost alot of its appeal when rendered in 3D. Nomura does a sketch that looks just like how Zidane looked in FF9, only with slightly spikier hair and anime eyes, and that's enough to warrant your constant condratictory opinions? He modifies, you complain, he doesn't modify, you whine.

So what do you want? Amano's look to appear in games? We seen that done in the FF6 FMVs, and personally it lost alot of Amano's details when it goes through modelling and renderring. Amano's work should stay as sketches or graphic novel, paper artwork, put it on 3D form that needs to be ANIMATED and it will lose out alot. Now 2D animation can probably replicate his style. but 3D for gaming purposes? Not so much. Either way, its a lose situation.

So you don't like Nomura. No one cares about that. What we care is that you actually having some constructive critisim and also who you would actually wanna see designing and how you think it should be done. All this constant bashing and no actual preferences or real reasonings behind it its getting real old. To me, and deep down for alot of you, in 3D graphics, Nomura's artwork is more easier to create and won't look like ass, whereas Amano would cause alot of headaches and subsequent backlash from fans. You want a bad character design? The human characters in the new TMNT movie, now THEY look like ass. Nomura's work is subjective, but at least in a 3D look, they don't look out of place or weird.

And as for Setzer, I'm not a big fan of the new look either, but at least there are reasonings, they need him to blend in the KH2 world. If they did a replica, well, he will look so out of place.

I don't like every single Nomura design, I thought Selphie was dull to look at, and I only liked their clothes half the time. But there are characters I really liked, mostly the Org members in KH2. But at least unlike some of you, I'm don't mindless worship like some of you mindlessly bash. And flaming someone for having a different opinion? Mature. Just because someone liked something doeesn't make them a fangirl who will love every single thing, it makes them, I dunno, FANS?! Bashing fangirls or boys isn't gonna make your opinion look better.

Now either MOVE ON from this or actually post something more in your posts than just "Nomura sucks balls." You know, let people see your point of view and reasonings. If you can't do that, you had your say, now move on.

Quote:

Golfdish from Hell May 10, 2007 04:03 PM

I think it's like:

"Okay, the guy did some okay designs for FF7. That's nice."

"Eh, these guys from FF8 are kinda weird, but whatever..."

"Hmm, these guys from the Bouncer and FFX look kinda like the guys from FF8. This is starting to get kinda lame."

"AHHH!!!!! Make it stop! Make it stop!"

And then it continues from there...Give the guy 1-2 games every few years to design, not most of the entire company's characters. I mean, I hate the newer Castlevania designs, but the lady who does that is relegated to just that series (and she isn't being given extensive directorial over other major company projects either), so it's not a widespread problem.

Personally, I'd love to see Amano's artwork brought to 3D. Maybe not IX (the game's ingame cast always looked goofy to me), but the sketches for FFVI were definitely nice enough to warrant consideration.

Well, I think we've gotten to the point where it's possible to do so. Okami is a good example of a game based on a style that looks like it might not translate very well, but it turned out very well.

The ancient PS2 managed the sumi-e visuals in that game, so one of these new fangled next gen machines could handle it with ease (as well as providing larger environments to work with).

That's scary...Okami was exactly the game I was thinking of when it came to Amano-like work in 3D. I can just tell from screenshots and such (since I haven't seen how it works in action).

Kairi Li May 10, 2007 04:21 PM

Now that you do mention Okami, yes, its probably easier to do it justice to Amano's style. BUT! Will it sell? After all people are more used to mainstream realistic or animeish graphics, Okami is one of those real gems, but was it a top seller compare to say, FF12? It's unlikely Square is 'creative' enough like Clover to wanna go down that route.

In other words it's a risk for them to try something "different" due to business reasonings. Which goes back to the whole milking issue... Again.

No. Hard Pass. May 10, 2007 04:30 PM

You're right, his translation of someone else's project didn't look like what I described. But what he did with original characters like Sora, the Bouncer, Tidus etc sure the fuck do. I'm not saying his work doesn't translate well to the games, I'm saying he's a bad artist. He has no eye for composition, he lacks the eye of a quality designer in that his outfit choices are patently ridiculous and look garish, and on top of that, the man hasn't made a truly original piece of work since he took over. The man isn't very talented. Sorry if that upsets your precious worldview.

Kairi Li May 10, 2007 04:33 PM

Finally some actual critisism. And I understand all your points, and agree with some.

Doesn't mean I'm gonna hate his work, but he does need to improve on alot, especially the actual character's looks, and some modifications and changes in the outfits is due.

Latly some of his work in KH2 has gone down, like the cover for Final Mix. Not a very good piece at all. The first Final Mix was much better.

Golfdish from Hell May 10, 2007 04:34 PM

Nomura's designs don't immediately strike me as being "anime". His is more lifelike and even contemporary...Stuff like the Tales series or practically any PC hentai game is much more the mainstream "anime" style.

I'm not saying "Amano or die", but I am saying I'm (like most people) are tired of what Nomura brings to the table and I'll settle for practically anything else at this point. What I will give him credit for is making his style as popular as it is, because I wouldn't have figured it after seeing his FF8 cast (which has more or less become his "model").

I have seen some art styles in various manga that literally make me want to hurl (fair warning to anyone who picks up Galaxy Angel Party...), but I don't think people are adverse to creative art styles like Okami or even the Super Paper Mario look. Maybe not "mainstream", but its' hard to deny their quality.

Kairi Li May 10, 2007 04:37 PM

I agree with you on that Square need more variety and diversity, and that Square should stop using Nomura so much. I rather just see Nomura stick to the KH series and let some new talent in for the looks for the FF series, or any other ones. I mean the piece of art in Last Remnants doesn't look bad at all.

Quote:

Unfortunatly for Clover, Okami didnt' do well in Japan. Meaning it sends the message to other companies to NOT let go of the mainstream graphics looks.

It actually works very well. Sure there's some rought edges here and there, but the overall game was phenomenal. Most things in the game seem to be moving constantly, with some objects moving more than others. Oh, and the style lent itself to the creation of quirky/charming characters.

BTW, Okami apparently did ok over here. Apparently it was in Japan that it didn't do so hot.

This is the only statement I want to comment on.

Nomura's style is, quite simply....a style. It's a style that's his own and no one elses. He likes to add a bunch of belts and zippers and bizzare hairstyles. It's as much a style as Amano's preference for blonde hair, polka dots and outlandish hair accessories, or Yoshida's preference for noseless faces, oldschool armor and a curious fetish for the buttock region.

Saying he's a "bad" artist doesn't really cut it as a fact, because there's really no wrong way to design a videogame character, unless said designs are uninspired or clearly ripped off from another medium (bald space marines and whatnot). Of course there's the argument that many of his creations resemble one another, but that's as much true for Toriyama and a billion other artists you can think of. When it comes to adapting characters that weren't his originally, I think he does a very acceptable job (all the disney characters of KH). Okay, so Zidane has a ponytail now. Wow.

You can choose to hate his stuff all you want, but in the end it's a matter of preference, not fact. If his stuff was really bad, SE would've given him the boot long ago, and he's been doing this for nearly a decade now. The real problem, at least for me, is that he's overused. I haven't gotten tired of his designs, but it would be nice for a bit more variety here and there like with FFXII.

And please don't make such illogical, fanboyish claims that all "his" games suck, because 99% of the time, all he does are the character designs and a few animations. It wasn't his fault if you hated FFVIII or The Bouncer. The only games he actually had a hand in making was KH I and II, and FFvsXIII.

Jagged May 11, 2007 05:10 AM

For all those saying it's going to like Ehrgeiz, The boumcer, and what not, Dream Factory isn't working on any of these games .

As far as the Art goes, I don't see what problem in these the designs are , pretty much everything the Characters had on in the original work is on them only in his style. Franky, while he may not be greatest artist ever or whatever, but he's decent designer. FFXIII's Main female is my favorite of his.

FatsDomino May 12, 2007 07:47 PM

Moving this out of RPG Forum because it is not an RPG. At least that's what they're telling people now. If this turns out to be some sort of RPG/fighting game hybrid then by all means move it back in here.

I wonder what their reason for putting this on the PSP is. I'd have figured a Final Fantasy fighting game would have a better audience on a console. But who knows how this game actually plays so I might be wrong.

Slayer X May 12, 2007 10:45 PM

From the sounds of it they're referring to it as an action/progression game, which will most likely have RPG type character advancement. Also if I had to guess it will probably also be a battle system like Crisis Core, and may even use the Crisis Core engine. All that would make sense for puting it on the PSP at least.

Garnet May 14, 2007 11:36 PM

Im looking forward to this game. ;d FFIX is very underrated and does not get the recognition it deserves. I can't wait to play it. ;d I just hope that they make the voices fit the characters. That's the only thing that Im worried about.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 15, 2007 07:40 AM

I like how in the old days people here used to get heavily abused for not liking a game because of poor graphics, no matter what the ganeplay was like and now you're all sitting here bitching about the character's outfits and haircuts...

Fair enough, there's very little gameplay information to discuss at present but I think some of you kids could afford to be a little less shallow.

I imagine the thinking behind putting this out on PSP is the complete saturation of fighting games on other consoles. There must be thousands of 3d beat-em-ups on PS2 with little to choose between most of them. Even Tekken jumped the shark after the third one and I don't know about America or Japan but it's very rare to see a fighting game on PS2 anywhere near the best sellers list and they generally bomb in price soon after release. The last fighting game I bought was Super Dragonball Z and that was £16 on launch day, less than a Platinum title costs.

The PSP however has relatively few beat-em-ups thus far and the added bonus of easy to use internet options. Fighting games are only ever fun against a human opponent so if they sort out the online multiplayer aspect of this, it could prove to be a big hit.

WoW, this game is going to kick serious ass.

So far it looks like we have;
Warrior of Light
Garland
Zidane
Kuja
Sephiroth
*Cloud

New Characters
Cecil
Kain Highwind

Kairi: Is it possible to have thoes files uploaded to GFF because my Megaupload profile has already been maxed out for the next few hours ^^;

Freelance May 16, 2007 12:48 PM

What's with the * beside Cloud?

No FFVI characters confirmed yet? How disappointing!

So this is a fighting game after all, or something similar? I always thought they'd make one eventually. It's too bad I can't play it.

Slayer X May 16, 2007 12:53 PM

Thought someone might ask about the * next to Cloud. The * is because he has not been announced yet but;
1) He's about the most popular FF character
2) They seem to have a bad guy and a good guy from each of the chosen games so far

So the * means that he's speculated, but not official. As for further characters like thoes from FFVI, they're probably going to drag out the character announcements for some time so don't be disappointed just yet.

And finally this games is looking to be more of a KH game type, more then another Ehrgeiz or something of that sort for they are calling Dissidia a progressive action game.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 04:15 PM

If you're right about the combat system similar to KH, I'm sure as hell getting this. Duking it out with buddies through Wi Fi as various FF characters? Yeah.

All we need is more characters, like the ones from FF6, and some female ones. Personally I want Lightening from FF13 to be in this one too, but maybe as an unlockable.

And I liked what Nomura did with Kuja and Garland.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 05:28 PM

You want a character from a game you've never played to be in it. God you're dense.

This game is going to be a travesty. I'm calling it now.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 06:21 PM

Probably cause shes one of the few female that seems to work in this area. Celes and Terra would also be awesome. Tifa also works. Besides, Lightening looks awesome in combat, and this game is all about combat. Yeesh. I'm not gonna even expect much of a story mode, I just want to duke it out with a friend.

But the rest? Rinoa? Yuna? Garnet? Bleh.

And calling a game a travesty over a couple of scans. Yeah, I'm the dense one here. At least wait for some footage before slamming it. Its not meant to be an RPG, its a fighting game. If the combat mechanics sucks or something then at least you hae a reason for slamming it. Until then, keep it to yourself unless you have a reason.

Slayer X May 16, 2007 06:57 PM

Denicalis: Just do what I do, play Ehrgeiz and then all FF compilation games seem amazing whether they are or arn't, you're just glad it's not Ehrgeiz.

As for Lightening being in Dissidia, it's possible. SE is puting the main character of FF Tactics A2 into the Tactics remake for the PSP as a hidden character, so you know that they're open to these sorts of things.

Fanboy/girl idiots like you are already all pissing yourselves over it. Reason enough to expect Ehrgeiz II: Electric Boogaloo. And taking RPG characters and making them into a fighting game is a travesty in and of itself. It's not like Smash Bros and Ness, where it was cartoony and quirky and fun. This is recreating epic battles between people like the Warrior of Light and Garland and putting it in a fighting game. It's simplistic and idiotic, and just another way for SE to train their newbiews on a piece of shit rehash game that shouldn't exist. I can't wait until this comes out and you bitch and cry because it wasn't quite pretty enough. Then again, Nomura did the designs, so how could you possibly not like it? I think anyone who gets excited about Espers that turn into motorcycles can automatically be disregarded as someone who doesn't really like RPGs. Go play FF: Road Rash and leave the big kids alone.

Slayer X May 16, 2007 09:27 PM

Holy man, take it easy, why are you puting so much effort into something that you don't care about? Not only that, but according to you HE'S a fanboy and you're trying to CHANGE his mind... who's the real fool?

Also earlier you were calling kairi dense for wanting a character from a game they haven't played, then what how dense are you for rating a game that doesn't even have a beta build, video footage, or a single preview. Hmmm... seems we have 2 against 1 here as to who the true dense one is, perhaps you should reconsider how you go about your business here.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 09:41 PM

My god, Slayer X disagress with my opinion that fighting games should have nothing to do with classic RPGs and that Nomura should stop raping more talented people's work for his own paycheck. Whatever shall I do? I guess I'll have to stop right now and reconsider myself. The Nomura fan chump and some random forum anime kid disagree with me. The sheer horror of it.

Slayer X May 16, 2007 10:01 PM

lol, I love how you make things so dramatic where they are so simple.

you don't like something + don't buy it = point made

you trying to make a nagative point + thread for FF fans and people FOR the game = bad decision

See it's that simple

For the record it was I that brought up Ehrgeiz and it being a horrible game so where you got, "Slayer X disagress with my opinion that fighting games should have nothing to do with classic RPGs" is quite interesting. And secondly there's next to no chance that Dissidia is going to be a fighting game because it's and Action Progressive game (Ex PoP, God of War) or if they decide to add RPG elements it'll be like a Kingdom hearts. This is a point that has been made for the THIRD time, and you're still calling it a fighting game, are you even conversing here or throwing a tantrum?

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 10:05 PM

No, he and I are telling you chill the fuck out and quit making baseless opinions over a couple of images. And to maybe stop insulting our intelligence. Oh, and actually READING what our posts are saying may help, since you obviously were putting words in our mouths from your incoherant rants.

And unlike other fanboys out there, graphics aren't enough to make me like a game. If I just like the graphics, I'd stick to desktop wallpapers instead of shelling out 50 bucks thanks. I think being able play against my buddies through wi fi and playing as various FF characters would be a neat game. If you don't find the idea appealing thats your opinion, but gives you no right to insult others who do.

Now for god's sake's chill. Its just a game, no need to get all pissy at anyone else.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 10:13 PM

Funny, I just spent the last few posts doing exactly that. Slayer, I have no say on his intelligence one way or the other. I haven't seen him often enough to form an opinion. You, on the other hand, come off like another SOLDIER/Grubdog etc, and are going to get scorned for it. Go back to your shitty taste in games and art and fuck right off.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 10:16 PM

If your opinion gives you the right to slam someone's taste, than by all rights I should be able to do the same, correct? Or is there a double standard I don't know about?

We all have our tastes and opinions, but insulting someone's because it differs to yours make you an asshole and a flamer, and its ruining the discussion. Unless you have anything more to say that's constructive or relevant, then don't post here at all, since its obvious you don't care for the game at all and just trying to attract attention. You made your point, now MOVE ON.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 10:18 PM

No, insulting someone's taste when you have no basis for it is pointless. You and I both know our disagreements start on Nomura. I flat out said he was a bad artist with no eye for composition, design and that his concepts were boring and idiotic. You argue that he's not. Where's your design degree hanging from? You like a bad artist, and I'm sorry that offends you, but one day you'll have to come to terms with your awful taste and move on with your life.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 10:20 PM

Because a bad artist is subjective, and you don't need to be a film maker to critque a movie, and that applies to art as well. If he can't draw, why would he even be hired in the first place?

Its all subjective, now move on. For Christ's sakes.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 10:22 PM

It's not all subjective. Art appreciation is subjective, art design has certain standards and forms to it. If you knew anything about design, you'd know that much. And no, you don't have to be a film MAKER to critique a movie, but you sure as fuck have to understand film, don't you? Or are you going to tell me that Uncle Buck is a great piece of American Cinema, and that it's all ok because it's subjective.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 10:25 PM

Then perhaps some actual details and elaboration could have HELPED your argument, instead of stating things over and over. Take a image, use MS paint to point out his flaws then. All I see is you whining and ranting over someone's opinion and over a couple of game screenshots like a lunatic. If you're so informed and educated, by all means grace us with your wisdom and knowledge. At least it would be more constructive than your rants. I'm not asking you to change your mind, I'm asking you to stop ragging on other's taste and opinions, and have some CONSTRUCTIVE argument and reasons to support your own.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 10:29 PM

Oh, a little detail and elaboration? This from someone who, on the first page, basically said what the fuck is this new genre name they've coined, and then a few minutes ago used it as a defense by saying it's not a fighting game, it's a Dramatic progressive action game? Please, you're clearly just taking the view that will best protect your precious SE. If you're so dense you can't understand that words like "dramatic progressive action game" are slang for "rehashed material bastardized," than you're more of an idiot than I give you credit for. Kudos on that.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 10:31 PM

Since when have I said it wasn't a fighting game? You confused my posts with Slayer X. I thought it was a fighting game the moment the scans came out.

Like I said, you don't read. And you're just ragging on my posts cause it makes you feel superior. I thought that genre name was ridiculous, since its pretty obivous is a fighting game from the scans. Doesn't mean its gonna automatically make it a crappy game.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 10:34 PM

I don't read every post every time I reply, no. Sorry for confusing the two of you. If I didn't read, hot shot, I wouldn't have known that was even posted at all.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 10:35 PM

You can't argue then if you're unwilling to read every post carefully. I suggest you stop all this before this derails the thead further. You have your opinion, I have mine, and Slayer X has his. Just leave it at that.

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 10:38 PM

Ok, pay attention junior. I don't re-read every post before I reply. As in I'm not going to read the hundred posts before every single reply. I have an opinion, you have yours. It's a tragedy that your reputation as a Nomuraite is so prolific that I can't take it seriously.

Kairi Li May 16, 2007 10:43 PM

Me being a "Nomuraite" (wow you actually took time to think of this?) is your subjective opinion. Doesn't make it true. There are designs he created that annoyed me belive it or not, you would have known however if you bothered reading the previous posts I made. Would have taken only 10 mins.

And insulting others doens't make your opinion more right or better, it just makes you look like you have a holier than thou attitude. I think you should quit posting in a game thread that you dont give a damn about, cause you're just gonna keep stirring up shit for no reason other than to feed your ego. I asked you to elaborate, you can't even give us that. I can't take YOU seriously cause your arguments have no back up.

Can we all go back to the topic on hand PLEASE?

No. Hard Pass. May 16, 2007 10:51 PM

Oh, but I do care about this game. I think it's a fucking travesty and incredibly indicative of Square's entire modern movement of halfass remakes and terrible new premises. I've given you my points on Nomura's work. He has bad composition, it's cluttered and it's repetitive. Maybe you were blinded by the chain wallets. You'd know that if you paid any attention to what I've said in other posts. Would have only taken you 10 minutes, junior.

Nomura does shitty design (and yes, he can be a bad artist and have a job. George Lucas keeps getting to make movies, and he's one of the worst dialogue writers in Hollywood). None of the modern Square rehashes have been anything but training exercises for new people who clearly aren't up to snuff. Square has tried this option before, and it turned out fucking horrible. Wow, three wrongs sure do lead to good things. Just because you disagree with my points doesn't mean I haven't made them, ace. Keep up.

Slayer X May 16, 2007 11:31 PM

I'm no artist nor do I view myself in the position to critique art. However as a gamer, I don't give a fuck if it's Nomura doing concept or Jim Bob the 24th, as long as I can look at a character and say, "that's Sephiroth and that's Zidane" that's all I care about. This who has the beter taste in art is stupid and if you really want to talk about it go somewhere else.

Denicalis: No you can't nor should read the previous 100 posts in a thread before posting, however reading the 10 or so latest ones that pertains to the current discussion is reasonable, as well as allows you to make in informative post. Like I said earlier, some of your prior posts were just totally uninformed as to what happened in simply the last three or so posts and simply makes you look bad. I'm not saying this to lay blame, anything that's done is done, just try to remember this for the future.

Rydia May 17, 2007 12:50 AM

Let's keep the posts on topic from this point on. Thanks.

Info on battle system, courtesy of IGN :
Quote:

While last week's announcement of Dissidia Final Fantasy (note the order of the name) was certainly a big surprise, Square Enix didn't really reveal too much about the title. Even after a short trailer at the Square Enix Party, all we could do was make guesses about the battle system.

Enter this week's issue of Famitsu, which provides a first full look at the game.

Believe it or not, they actually managed to put together a storyline for Dissidia in order to explain how all the Final Fantasy heroes and villains got together. It all has to do with the god of balance and harmony, Cosmos, and the god of disorder, Chaos. The eternal war between these two is struck with a slight imbalance, leading to chaos filling the world. All hope lies in 10 warriors brought forth by Cosmos.

The long and the short is, Cosmos has called upon a bunch of Final Fantasy warriors to do battle over a fully 3D battle field. Currently, we know that Warrior of Light (FF1) and Zidan (FF9) will appear in the game. Also appearing (apparently from the Chaos side) are their two greatest rivals, Garland (FF1) and Kuja (FF9). Sephiroth should also be making an appearance, based on what we saw in the Square Enix Party trailer.

As suggested by the storyline, there should be at least 10 heroes in the game. This number does not include characters from the villain side, with character designer and creative director Tetsuya Nomura admitting to Famitsu that the development team is currently simply working on getting as many characters as possible into the game.

The characters will feature in a storyline that players will be able to see by clearing the game's story mode with each one in turn. As this game is being made in celebration of the Final Fantasy series 20th anniversary, one of the hopes of the development staff is that fans will exclaim things like, "I was able to meet that character!".

Considering that this is a fighting game at heart, more important than the storyline is the combat system. Fights revolve around the use of an individual set of special skills to do damage to your rivals. Each character's skills are displayed through a command list on the bottom-left corner, which changes based on distance from your enemy and other special factors. The battle system also includes evasion and jumping, although the controls are said to be simple enough that even players who aren't into action games will be okay.

Players are encouraged to destroy the environments. Destroying pillars and other objects builds up your character's "Brave" meter, which gives you access to new attacks. You also gain an advantage by pounding your opponents, as this causes a special move gauge to build up.

Special moves include the skills that you'd expect to see given the background story of each character. Warrior of Light can transform using a Class Change command. So too can Zidane, making use of a Trance command. Warrior of Light also has an Excalibur command, and when facing off long range, gains access to a "Long Range" attack option.

You'll be able to build up experience through battle, growing stronger as you rise in level. You can also customize your characters with equipment. This should make for some interesting wireless fights against your buddies.

This strange twist of the Final Fantasy series is currently without a release date in Japan. However, as it is a 20th anniversary game, we're expecting to get our hands on it some time this year.
There you have it folks, it is a FIGHTING GAME in full 3D enviroment.

Slayer X May 20, 2007 06:57 PM

Sounds more like Power Stone to me. I'd like to add more to this post, but there's really not much more that needs to be said. Power Stone + Final Fantasy = HOLY SHIT!!!

Freelance May 20, 2007 07:23 PM

Ah! I knew it was a fighting game! I hope more than one character from each game will be in it, and not just the 'hero' and the 'villain.' Speaking of which, who'd be the villain for FFVIII? Seifer or Ultimecia?

Makes me want a PSP now. Luckily they're much cheaper now than they were at launch.

Sarag May 20, 2007 08:21 PM

I.... oh christ.

Good fucking christ

i hope rydia's in it

Good god. Thank you lord for making me hold onto my PSP. Why is Square-Enix so godly when it comes to the graphics department.

I like what they did with Kuja, except for the whole thong looking thing. FFIX is the only final fantasy I have yet to play, though. Is he supposed to be like that?

Inhert May 20, 2007 09:40 PM

omg this look so much fun! and i heard wireless play! well it's probably just psp to psp but we can always hope for an online mode XD I really can't wait for this now ^^

As The Governator would say, Kuja is a GIRLY MAAAN.

So we finally got Final Fantasy The Fighter. At least we won't have a shortage of characters to include in the roster. They could even do a multi-man melee like Smash Bros and have have dozens of Cids appearing for you to fend off xD

I'm starting to look foward to this more, but then again, I don't have a PSP and I doubt I'll get one anytime soon. Should I eventually buy one, I'll probably get this along with 2-3 other games. Time will tell I suppose.

WolfDemon May 20, 2007 11:34 PM

Damn. Looks like I'll have to be buying a PSP again soon. What with this and Crisis Core, as well as the Disgaea port and God of War: Chains of Olympus, it's about damn time some good games started coming out for this system.

Metal Sphere May 21, 2007 01:24 AM

The way the battles were described reminds me of KH2. There you had a similar setup where contextual commands would pop up for you to use, often going into a longer stream of inputs. Sounds interesting and definitely lends itself to some frenetic combat.

I'm curious as to what heroes they'll choose to put in, aside from the expected ones (Cloud, Squall, Tidus, etc). And who would they pick from FFVI and FFXII?

Kairi Li May 21, 2007 05:39 AM

If they HAVE to put people in 12, it better be Balthier, Ashe and Basch. Maybe Fran. But Vaan and Penelo.... Eh..

FF6, god, I want the whole gang. Though I would probably favor the girls like Celes and Terra.

koifox May 21, 2007 04:41 PM

I want to see Gogo, he's like Shang Tsung but better taste in pals. Anyway as long as you can play as Kefka, and he'd better be the creepiest fucking clown ever seen, I'll buy a PSP for it.

You play a lot of MUGEN, don't you? No wonder you have such low standards.

PixelatedCows May 21, 2007 08:44 PM

I'm kinda on the fence with this one. Squeenix's spin off's have been pretty hit or miss lately (mostly miss) so yeah, I'll just wait and see.

When it comes to Nomura's art though, I actually don't mind it at all. He's made the whole zipper/leather/spiky-hair thing all his own. (Which I think still looks great after all these years and numerous titles). It would be nice though to try out other art styles with different titles as opposed to turning to him for everything square.

Slayer X May 21, 2007 09:50 PM

koifox: I actually have no idead what MUGEN is. I've heard a lot of noise about it, but know nothing about it. So if someone could explain it to me sometime that would be cool.

Very quick explanation: It is a versatile customizable 2D Fighting Game which allows for many numerous characters, ranging from Chiyo from Azumanga Daiyo to Peter Griffin from Family Guy to compete in Marvel Vs. Capcom style arcade action.

As far as the artwork on the characters go and having Nomura 'design' the characters originally made by other artists. Its just fanwank/fanservice for Square Enix fans who give a shit about that sort of thing. In otherwords a nonissue.

Congle line of abuse. Or is that conga-line. Or congaline. May 22, 2007 06:23 AM

Don't forget that MUGEN is broken as fuck and not worth the trouble.

MUGEN aside, this game will be worth a download, I'm still trying to figure out the fighting system. I really do like SE's fighting games, all 2 of them, so if this a real fighter, as opposed to an "action" X Button masher, then it'll be worth the trouble I'm sure. Now all you'd need to do is find people to play it ='D

kainlightwind May 22, 2007 04:57 PM

If Kefka is playable. I'm soooo buying it. Hells. I take that back. If Kain is playable from FFIV. I'm game. Do it SE!

I completely forget that Squaresoft made those. Just doesn't fit into their style.

then again, I guess the same could be said for the other Non-RPGs they've made, like Einhander.

Solis May 30, 2007 08:21 PM

Technically it was Light Weight that developed Bushido Blade (Square was the publisher). But I guess they do have experience with fighting games, even if they weren't the full developers of them (have they said if it's Square themselves that are making Dissidia or did they outsource the work?)

And why has everyone forgotten about Tobal No. 1 and 2? Those were also Square-published fighting games, you know...

Krelian May 30, 2007 10:31 PM

I'll be over the moon if they throw in more characters from IV, V and VI. Exdeath, Golbez, Edgar, Kefka and Kain are my shortlist.

Downloadable content wouild also be a nice plus for this game.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing "Doomtrain" as a playable character.

How the hell would Doomtrain be a playable character? He's simply a train for christ's sake, lol.

Hotobu Jun 5, 2007 11:43 AM

Just a a quick point of note. Square also did Tobal no. 1 and 2. 1 wasn't terrible, but I hear 2 is fantastic.

Jochie Jun 5, 2007 12:15 PM

The Tobal games should be "classics" for their uniqueness. Everyone go buy them now, and Squenix remake them for the DS with two-player Wi-Fi whatchamacallit.

If you can tell me where to find Tobal no. 2 I'm there. I scoured everywhere for it and couldn't find a copy (legit or otherwise).

If they can make the Daytona USA car a playable fighter in Fighter's Megamix, they can make a train a fighter too.

I made a request for it a while ago here and someone actually did post a link to it. Just try doing a search for it in the Other Requests forum, or make a new thread if nothing else. I'd upload my copy but I'm not sure where I put the ISO, and my connection kinda sucks for uploading right now.

Yes, but he was also a boss.

A very forgiving one, especially in FFVI if I may recall.

Here comes an internet link on the internet to a trailer on the internet! Sephiroth seems to have upgraded from fire to lava. Good to know!

Kairi Li Jun 19, 2007 07:16 AM

The battles feel like the boss battles in KH2, chaotic, action heavy, and flashy, and various RC type moves going on.

Why the hell is Zidane's voice even more girlish than Ed's JP voice for FMA?! I thought this voice is supposed to be BROKEN!

Kuja sounds awesome.

Sephy's character model looks awesome in Dissidia. (No Marilyn Manson lips.)

Rock Jun 19, 2007 07:54 AM

Is there any trick on how to get that video working? I've tried numerous times with IE and Firefox so far, no dice.

Rotorblade Jun 19, 2007 08:12 AM

Do you have the latest Flash player? I'm not having any problems downloading it, I'll see if I can snatch the embedded video. See if the Unix I've learned can be put to some kind of use.

They should rename it to "Dissidia Final Fantasy: Being Able to Play as Sephiroth".

Slayer X Jun 19, 2007 02:37 PM

I like how you guys were talking about the fanboys going "gaga" for the game where it seems to be more haters crying about the fact that they don't know why people are excited for this game.

Which means that you have NO idea how marketing and the 80% retarted colaborative called "society" works. The fact is that society simply needs a big name to make something desireble. Hence Final Fantasy+New product = $$. There's no deep psycological breakdown required it's as simple as Gr1 math. (Why do you think Halo is big? It ain't because it's anything that great either. Therefore association of Final Fantasy alone for this game is required to make people want it.)

Secondly I love how the people bashing this game leave and go to whatever thread tailors to their fanboyish tastes and flip out on others saying stuff like, "How can you say it's bad if you've never played it" or whatever the new line for fanboys are these days.

Ahhh the internet. You've got to love it.

Btw, I'm once again going to answer a question which will most likely the very next post after this one. The question would be along the lines of, "What are you talking about. You're probably a Final Fantasy fanboy yourself who would even buy a Final Fantasy dildo if they made one".

Well first, YES I am a Final Fantasy RPG fan. And I hated Ehrgeiz and anything with the name Dream Factory on it for creating the worst Tactical RPGs ever made which were on the PSP. So am I looking forward to this game? I'm looking forward to getting it for $30CAD as a matter of fact. Until then I will enjoy the $35CAD that I saved from not getting the game at launch.

Sarag Jun 19, 2007 02:52 PM

Actually, I don't think anyone's calling into question why this game is being made.

except me. Come on Square! Cid Fighter would be so much better. You could sic airships and magitek on each other!

WolfDemon Jun 19, 2007 04:55 PM

I'm gonna wait to pass any kind of judgment on the game until they release a little more info on the gameplay. The KH system got old pretty quickly, and if this is basically KH with various character skins from other games, I may just borrow it from a friend, rather than buy it. I know I said earlier in the thread that it'd be good, but I think that was just the initial fanboy response.

As for Nomura, personally I thought the only decent looking character he designed was Auron. I absolutely despised Tidus with his half-shorts-half-pants getup and random gauntlet thing. Oh, and let's give him a sword that's made of WATER, but it can cut machines, or anything for that matter. And I thought Lulu looked ridiculous with her...dress made of belts. Don't even get me started on Sora. The Advent Children designs weren't too terribly bad. More leather than you can shake a stick at, but at least he left out the myriad of belts/zippers and clown shoes.

Taco Jun 19, 2007 05:51 PM

On a game related discussion the game looks like trash. A watered-down KH engine with Final Fantasy characters slapped onto it. But it has SEPHIROTH HOLY SHIT so it will sell.

Also convinced that you could slap a Square-Enix logo on an actual steaming pile of shit and people will buy it.

Kairi Li Jun 19, 2007 06:02 PM

Well, thanks to the PMs by Colonel, I'm going to keep posting.

While I do agree that Square is milking their franchises, if this game turns out to be fun, I'd get it one way or another (illegal or legit).

If this game becomes a series however, then this is going beyond too far. Leave it as a one shot, and they should probably move on to trying to do something original. Luckily there is still Last Remnants. That game will prob determine if Square will keep up the milking.

Though we should all be glad that this is just for the PSP, the more sidekick system as oppose to a full blown next gen game. Now that would be a waste of resources and talent.

DarknessTear Jun 19, 2007 06:46 PM

Square-Enix has talent?

Anyway, considering the nonstop bitching about Square-Enix milking their franchises people sure do like to continue to buy them anyway. If you don't like the milk, stop sucking the teets!

Slayer X Jun 19, 2007 07:13 PM

That's because for every one person complaining in here there's about 1,000 that's looking forward to the game. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong. But in on the other hand you have them doing the same thing that Nintendo is doing, the low risk high reward thing which makes a lot of $$ but doesn't always do well for the rep.

How well did Dirge of Cerberus sell?

Now, that 1 hater : 1000 buyers statistic might be likely for FF7 remake. But FF7 fighter?

Slayer X Jun 20, 2007 09:32 AM

It's not a FF7 fighter when there's only 2 characters from it out of the 30 or so who will be in it from other games.

Also FF7 remake? Hardly. It was a spin-off and being a TPS most likely would have been less desireble then if it had of been a bett-em-up of some sort.

So I stick to what I said earlier. Who cares if it's like 998 to 1 or 972 to 1, the idea is the same and to argue a number which is OBVIOUSLY not a real number would just make you look like an ass for going after something that everyone knows is nothing more then a figure of speech.

WHAT

Also, about this whole "Milking the tits" thing, Squeenix announced they were going to tap Dragon Quest again, with remakes galore.

I don't know about you, but some of the games they're remaking were sort of hard to find, even for a niche market. I mean before the previous remakes.

Or the previous ones before that.

Or even the ones before that (the originals.)

Augh.

I distantly hear people saying "Well, what about portability? They're trying to get their games on (almost) all consoles so they can have a spread spectrum." Yeah well, I don't see how portability could help, it's just pushing more plastic. I thought the rule of competition was to HAVE a certain game on a certain console so then you could get consumers to buy said console, and then get them into that console's selection of games.

Or am I wrong, with this current war?

1) I did not say Dirge of Cerberus was the FF7 remake. That's silly. What I did do was compare its popularity to the popularity of this game, and suggest that the sales numbers will be similar in magnitude.

2) I did not make fun of your '1 hater to 1000 salivating fanboys' figure because 1000 is a nice round number. Similarly, I don't think 972 people per complaint is a closer number in any meaningful way.

3) I'm sure people are hot for this game because finally they can use Fighter to beat up Cecil, and that it isn't riding at all on the two most popular square characters in its history.

4) you are a foamboard cutout of Captain Picard stored in someone's garage

Slayer X Jun 20, 2007 10:30 AM

Well I think your part right and part wrong. Either that or I read it wrong.

Console companies want games to be on only their system to make people who want to play a game have to buy that system.

However developers want to be on as many consoles as possible in order to make more money.

Therefore to make the second tactic into the first comes payed exclusives. Console makers pay developers to make their games exclusive. Where this isn't usually a problem like in past console generation, for some reason developers this gen are REALLY sitting on the fence between PS3 and X360. It's the whole Sony is market leader VS 360 looks like a potential successor thing that's scaring them off. This is also why after a $50 million on MS's part to Take-Two only secured them two content packs for GTA IV. MS got seriously took if you ask me.

@Lurker
It was just the structure of your earlier post that threw me off in thinking that you were calling DoC a remake. If you say that that's not what you meant in the post then my apologies.

As for you're #4 comment. I'm not totally sure of the analogy, but I like Captain Picard so I'll take it as a good thing I guess >_^

niki Jun 21, 2007 05:26 PM

Garbage split and deleted. You may proceed.

Hachifusa Aug 17, 2007 03:08 PM

I might be really optimisitic, but I'm hoping this game is good. Then again, I thought that Dirge of Cerberus MIGHT have been good, because they might do something original by not doing an RPG.

Square: please go back to RPGs. You suck at everything else.

Still, it's a good start to include characters like Cain and Zidane. We'll all ignore the idiot Sephiroth inclusion. I mean, how many times does Sephiroth have to look up at us from fucking fire? I'm so sick and tired of that bitch. They should make a seperate game for FF7 characters and let the idiots who OMG <3 SEPHIROTH go and play that, instead.

One last thing: it seems cheap and campy to include the "Warrior of Light" from FF1. FF1 is outdated and blows. The "Warrior of Light" has no personality. Garland, however, is permissible, if only because, like, his helmet, you know, has HORNS.

And THAT is fucking awesome.

OmagnusPrime Aug 18, 2007 06:06 AM

This sound somewhat interesting. The odds would definitely be in favour of it not being great, but could turn out alright. Aside from those in the preview video that Infernal linked to have any other characters been confirmed? I can't see mention of anyone else and can't believe a fighting game would have just five or so characters.

Metal Sphere Jun 11, 2008 05:08 AM

O.O at Tidus' outfit. Well that's different. Jecht looks pretty much the same. Still hoping for Locke (hope his hair's gray though) but chances are slim at this point.

This will be the 4th game I'll be importing for the PSP.

I'm pretty sure that they'll be including a Final Fantasy IV character (Cecil-Kain or something) because of the upcoming release of the DS game.

This 'abortion' is probably going to sell out the first day in Japan. I wonder which bad pop star is going to do the main theme. =/

Alright, here's the current known roster of characters that have been announced for this game:

Final Fantasy I: Warrior of Light, Garland
Final Fantasy II: Firion, Emperor Palamecia
Final Fantasy VII: Sephiroth (we know Cloud is sure to follow)
Final Fantasy VIII: Squall Leonhart, Ultimecia
Final Fantasy IX: Zidane Tribal, Kuja
Final Fantasy X: Tidus, Jecht

So currently there are no characters from III-VI.

I'd love to hear the logic behind that statement. How can the inclusion of a character from a game you like in a different game you've decided you won't like ruin the original game you do like? That's the sort of 'tard logic I'd expect from Zeal or Megalith.

you know its like when you play kingdom hearts and see your favorite square characters and decide that they were completely ruined and made you hate the games they were on . . . . no wait this falls under the same category which doesn't make any more sense ~_~

It doesn't ruin the game, that was just me and Rotor fucking around. But these sorts of games certainly cheapen the memory of characters you enjoy. Oh hey, you like Setzer? Well now he's a little kid in chibi disney world. LULZ.

New trailer:
Gametrailers.com - Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Japanese Trailer 2

I have to say that it look far more interesting than I expected.

Loved Ultimecia <3

The gameplay seem pretty good. I just wonder how it will play and how we'll be able to do all those fancy moves.

I see how this is purely fan service, but it doesn't look really bad to me ;)

Hachifusa Jun 26, 2008 10:30 PM

That trailer had the gimmick of having real-time gameplay, but I remember about ten seconds of it. I hope to God it's not Kingdom Hearts styled, which would be pretty inexcusable for a fighting game.

I also find it very strange that the game has a story of sorts. At least, from the looks of it. It has to be pretty lame, comparable to all of those crossover fanfics from '98. At least it seems that Square Enix has completely forgotten it made IV-VI. I'd rather not see Celes in this or anything.

Forsety Jun 27, 2008 12:10 AM

You'll be disappointed to know that both Kefka and Cloud of Darkness show up in the villain art I guess then. It's pretty likely to have Terra VS Kefka for it's FF6 characters and I guess Luneth and Cloud of Darkness for FF3. The idea as far as I've read is 2 characters per game for 1~10 -- total of 20 characters.

chato Jun 27, 2008 12:12 AM

And more Sephiroth flame entrance. They'll never stop using that I guess. The only part I did like was where Squall is fending off Sephiroth in the last few seconds of the trailer.

map car man words telling me to do things Jun 27, 2008 01:35 PM

[21:27:28] <Q-chan> man, Dissidia is like a Kingdom Hearts raped Final Fantasy Smash Brothers, but I sadly must admit my not so inner nerd felt a tingle when you saw the 3D characters strike a pose and you notice they look IDENTICAL to the piece of Amano artwork they're mirroring

[21:27:32] <Q-chan> and that was awesome
[21:27:40] <Q-chan> so I may just have to play the game for more of those

[21:28:53] <a_worker> the only way Dissidia would be worth a purchase is if they also threw the recurring mid-bosses in.
[21:29:02] <a_worker> Because it would be bitchin' if you could play as Ultros.
[21:29:04] <a_worker> Don't know how you'd do it
[21:29:07] <a_worker> but it'd be bitchin'.

[21:29:17] <Q-chan> oh lawd
[21:29:55] <Q-chan> and if the FF6 characters did that surprised look pose
[21:30:08] <a_worker> <3 surprised look pose
[21:30:16] <Q-chan> =D

I'm probably not touching it before an undub surfaces, though.

Chie Jun 27, 2008 03:49 PM

They really tried to highlight Tidus in the trailer but all it really shows is how the clothing of each generation of FF heroes seem to decline.
I wonder how tired these animators are getting by recreating the fire entrance for sephiroth. They didn't even try in crisis core, all they did was recycle it from advent children.
I'm still awaiting for Capcom vs Square....ENIX! *Overly exaggerated arcade voice*

New interview on Dengeki

Forever Fantasy - Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts 3 & 2 - Dissidia: Final Fantasy Interview

THIS quote got me:

Quote:

Mr. Nomura has been at all the voice recordings, and the script is double the length of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

The hell? They have a longer script on a Smash Bros knock off than a prequel from their top popular RPG? Am I missing something here?

And the trailer was nice overall. Alot of cliche sounding dialogue aside, Squall VS Sephiroth is cool, something that even KH2 didn't bring in.

No. Hard Pass. Jun 27, 2008 11:36 PM

Yeah. That they both sort of suck.

SuperSonic Jun 30, 2008 12:34 PM

So they're trying to include 2 characters from each of the two games. You know, I get the feeling they might leave Cloud out and put Zack in as the other character for VII.

If the fans get pissed, oh well. Ehrgeiz can satisfy them for a while longer since it had six characters from VII to choose from. Of course, the developers just might include both guys seeing how it's "the greatest game evar!"

I'm willing to bet real money that Cloud and Zack are different costumes for the same character in an Eddy/Tiger fashion.

Infernal Monkey Jul 1, 2008 07:05 AM

The majority of Final Fantasy characters in a fighting game could be mere palette swaps and nobody would suspect a thing.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jul 1, 2008 07:29 AM

Maybe they should have got Capcom to design it then. :tpg:

Speaking of Final Fantasy Female Fighters: Aside from a villain, all the fighters so far have been male (Or as lurker said, its a sausage fest) for some unknown reason.

Perhaps its Twenty Males and Twenty Females? So 4 from each title? ... and they just decided to use the females for Fanservice marketing closer to the launch date as to garner additional interest?

SuperSonic Jul 1, 2008 12:04 PM

Heh, 40 fighters would be overkill. Honestly, as far as the VIII characters go they should've put in Seifer instead of Ultimecia. Sure it would've been a complete sausage fest at that point, but I just think Squall vs. Seifer would've made more sense.

You want to know why they're not putting any female characters in this game? They're saving them up for Final Fantasy Xtreme Beach Volleyball. C'mon, you'd know that would sell.

Vemp Jul 5, 2008 06:02 PM

spoiler: hidden Ultimecia bikini costume.

News from Square's DK£3713 Party

Final Fantasy Dissidia

- Is set for a 2008 December release.
- Will have a bundled version, however unknown as to what will be in the bundle.
- Will have a POTION set for it.
- Kefka and Sephiroth make their first in-game appearance.

DK£3713 Coverage - KH-Vids.Net Forum

OmagnusPrime Aug 22, 2008 06:59 AM

Edge Online has a preview of Dissidia up, which offers a slightly clearer explanation of the fighting system than I'd seen elsewhere:

Quote:

Destroying an opponent comes down to the delicate balance of two systems: hit-points and bravery. Attacks on the square button bring down the enemy’s overall health, but can’t be turned into combos – nor are they powerful, at first. Instead, players must build their Brave gauge (and decrease their opponent’s) through circle button attack combos and special moves. The Brave gauge then determines the power of the square button’s hit point attacks, allowing for more devastating moves that have a much greater effect on the health of the other fighter.

As you’d expect from a fighter, the game comes with all the requisite dodges, blocks and movement-sensitive attacks, and, as is fashionable, the environments, too, come into play during the combat.

here's a gameplay video between Onion Knight and Cloud of Darkness from FFIII that show a little more what OmagnusPrime explained

Gametrailers.com - Dissidia: Final Fantasy - DKS3713: Battle Gameplay

I have to say that it look better than I expected ^^

Jessie1311 Aug 22, 2008 11:49 AM

There's so many new FFVII shit going on now since the release of AC
This just proves they're over doing it
But all in all, looks great, I'm not much of a PSP player, but I do love a good FF game, hopefully this one provides for a good christmas if it's going to be released around then

Kairi Li Aug 22, 2008 07:14 PM

Wow, a clear gameplay video for once, nice.

So far I like the combat, it looks better than what I have expected as well, I particularly like the part where he gets into some uber overdrive attack and we can select a move FF menu style. Makes me wonder what the other characters will sport in their special attacks and how will each of them be executed.

It's also nice that they haven't done the typical thing of showing off Cloud VS Septhiroth again, and instead highlight the old classic characters first in their first gameplay video.

Kefka just adds a +30 awesomeness to everything.

The Onion Knight fight video is pretty keen.

Man, I can't wait for this game, I'm kinda hyped.

Terra is confirmed (Oh and Bartz too.)

http://www.forever-fantasy.net/image...er-artwork.jpg

Thank god, for a long while I really thought Square was gonna put Locke in the game instead.

I wonder if there would be a remix of Dancing Mad in the FF6 stage...

chato Oct 9, 2008 03:31 PM

Well. It aint all that surprising since Terra's the one with power. Good to see 'ol Bartz at least.

Inhert Oct 9, 2008 06:17 PM

damn they piked Cloud again... I kind of wished they would have put Zack instead :/

but I guess it will "appeal" to more fan with Cloud vs Sephiroth like we are use to...

Metal Sphere Oct 10, 2008 08:46 AM

Why would they put Zack in? I thought Dissidia's whole shtick was the protagonists and antagonists from the first ten games in the series?

Anyway, one thing I noticed is that the color in the character portrait backgrounds seems to match the logo of said game.

Rotorblade Oct 10, 2008 08:51 AM

Glad to know who the main character of Final Fantasy 6 is, at least. Time to laugh at Deni.

eprox1 Oct 10, 2008 05:24 PM

Was Jecht considered the main antagonist of 10? I thought it would be Seymour, or at least Yu Yevon...

Freelance Oct 10, 2008 05:43 PM

Most people consider Jecht to be the final boss, not Yu Yevon 'cause of the whole immortality thing and all. Although Seymour did some nasty stuff, I think he's more like Seifer in FFVIII despite the fact you fight him a lot more times.

I always figured Terra would be chosen since the entire plot revolved around her. Too bad two of my favourite FF characters aren't going to be in the game (Locke and Zack). All I can hope for now is to have Zack as an alternate costume for Cloud.

Yu Yevon is a floating spider... thing. Jecht is the main character's rebellious father. No brainer to use Jecht in a fighting game.

Oh and Seymour? An insane priest with parental abandonment issues who wanted to become the next Sin so that he could kill everyone in the world.

That's just lying to yourselves. Jecht was no final boss, and Yu Yevon was a complete embarassment. I was still enjoying FFX despite its issues and downward spiralling plot until the final boss turned out to not only be an incredibly lame wood tick, but Square didn't trust us to survive against an almost powerless enemy.

kupomog Oct 10, 2008 08:41 PM

I think Square-Enix's reason for putting Jecht in was because "story-wise," he is Tidus's villain. They said if they put Seymour in, they would also have to put Yuna in.

Freelance Oct 10, 2008 08:52 PM

I don't know about you guys, but I would much rather have Jecht in the game than Seymour or Yu Yevon. I mean, he's just a tick and would therefore end up being a joke character than a serious one. It'd be cool if he [Jecht] could have a Sin transformation with new attacks.

WolfDemon Oct 10, 2008 08:56 PM

I think his Braska's Final Aeon transformation would be more likely. But he'll probably use the Jecht Shot, like Tidus does, only it'll be the original Jecht Shot, and be "awesome." Or something.

You are both correct. :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...524_13_big.jpg

As to why Jecht was chosen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissidia:_Final_Fantasy

Quote:

Jecht was chosen instead of Seymour to be the villain of FFX because developers stated that the characters needed to have a storyline relation, and putting Seymour in it would make the FFX character Yuna necessary also.
So kupomog was right on that.

Freelance Oct 11, 2008 08:20 AM

Ah yeah, when I meant Sin I actually meant Braska's Final Aeon. I don't think Sin even had any attacks. I'm pretty sure all it did was er, smash into things.

P.S. I've actually seen that screenshot before, but apparently forgot all about it, haha.

OmagnusPrime Oct 12, 2008 10:26 AM

So Dissidia isn't being classified as a fighting game any more. From Edge Online:

Quote:

Square-Enix's continuing effort to make Big Money off the Final Fantasy franchise without doing anything precisely new has finally produced interesting results: an action game. I personally have had a fantasy since about the Dreamcast era that Square would hand the Final Fantasy characters to Namco's Soul Calibur team, though now that Soul Calibur has Darth Vader and Yoda, I guess that isn't going to happen. Dissidia, previously touted as a fighting game, was recently outed as having a story four times longer than Square-Enix's recent Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which was an actual RPG. So now they've changed the "genre" tab of the info box to read "Dynamic Progressive Action". Whatever you guys say! The game is actually kind of fun, with a battle system that doesn't entirely feel up to luck, and with plenty (tons) of little numbers and gauges and baubles all over the place. The environments are huge, and the action is actually rather crisp. It is with a sigh that I decide I might actually buy it, because, hey, Final Fantasy characters.

Emphasis is mine.

Well I'm sure this would be good news to some people but you know, I just want to fight things so the sooner I unlock everyone the better.

Kairi Li Oct 12, 2008 08:36 PM

This was kinda old news, since Nomura said a while back the voice acting script was alot longer than Crisis Core a couple of pages back. My reaction remains the same : Why the fuck does a fighting game have a longer script than the prequel to their most popular RPG?

I mean what next? Action films are gonna have more plot and development than a drama film? RPGs are getting shorter latly because of the next gen graphics and longer development times, and now fighting games have longer stories?

Bigblah Oct 12, 2008 09:32 PM

Is there a noticeable trend or are you basing your rant off a single game?

Rotorblade Oct 12, 2008 09:47 PM

Street Fighter IV has a full length anime accompanying it.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 13, 2008 03:32 AM

I guess it should be noted Crisis Core only has voice acting in select cutscenes and the rest is just text, so it's possible Dissidia uses more.

And the "voice acting script" probably counts in all the battle shouts and special attack "THIS IS THE ULTIMATE POWER" style quips as well, much like RPGs in general count sidequests and all around random grinding time into their "over 100+ hours of thrilling storyline and gameplay!".

Good evening folks, I'm just here to drop off the full reveals for Cefka and Tina.

As expected, their "limit break" (the term used in Dissidia escapes me at the moment) are their alternate forms.

And here's some more story/gameplay screens, and what looks like summons in the bottom left.

Jagged Nov 5, 2008 09:45 PM

Lots of nice info from the scans!

Quote:

Here are some highlights:

- Main menu options include: Story Mode, Quick Battle, Multiplayer Mode, PP Catalog, Museum, Player Data Settings, and Options.

- Story Mode is the game's main campaign mode, Quick Battle allows you to pick a character and play non-story battles like a fighting game. You can use data from the Story Mode in Quick Battle.

- Multiplayer Mode allows two players to challenge each other over ad-hoc. PP Catalog allows you to unlock Alternate Costumes and Battle BGMs by spending PP that you gain in Story Mode and Quick Battle mode.

- The Museum allows you to replay movies from the Story Mode that you've seen, as well as tunes you've unlocked in the PP Catalog. Player Data settings allows you to change the player name, and other player settings. The Option menu allows you to change camera settings, and select Data Install options.

- The Data Install feature supports 3 levels of install: 245meg, 373meg, and 528meg. The more you install, the shorter the load times will be.

- You can equip a weapon, a glove, a helm and a piece of armor in the Item menu. Equipment will alter your stats which include HP, CP, Drive, Attack, Defense and Luck.

- CP = Capacity Points. The amount maximum CP you have determines how many and what Abilities you can equip.

- Battlelize (?) is an option in the Customization Menu that displays special conditions or actions in battle whereby if you pull it off you get bonus items and/or materials. Materials can be exchanged in the Shop Menu for Rare Items.

- The Mission Menu in the Customization Menu displays a challenge (like an achievement I suppose, the example given is 'Successfully execute a HP Attack 50 times'). Whenever you complete the Mission, you will be rewarded with a Rare Item, and another Mission will be available.

- There is a Chocobo in the sidescrolling 16-bit window below your stats in the Customization menu. This is a sort of minigame. The Chocobo will scroll along as you complete battles, and it can pick up items along the screen as it passes them as well as provide bonus experience points and so on.

- A new evasive system is also revealed where you can defend against an opponent's EX Burst by tapping O to balance this vertical bar. Not sure how it works exactly, but it seems timing based and can reduce the damage you take from EX Busty attacks significantly.

MinionOfCthulhu Nov 5, 2008 11:07 PM

I am not ashamed to say that Kefka's alternate form makes my pants tight.
The summons don't impress me though. I saw a video of them and they weren't what I was expecting. Instead of the summon popping onto the field and wrecking things left and right, the picture pops up and the player's weapon sparkles with fire or whatever. I didn't notice if the combos that they used were different than normal; that is to say, whether or not the summons give you different abilities rather then just let you do more damage.

Since every character will have alternate costumes, I fully expect one of Cloud's costumes to be a Zack skin. And hopefully one of Terra's will give her green hair. Yes, I know, I love Amano's art, but seeing her with blond hair is strange.

I dunno, recently acquiring a PSP and those pics of Kefka may have sold me on the game.

Kairi Li Nov 7, 2008 07:43 AM

Dunno if its just me, but when Terra is in Esper form, her eyes look more Amano style than when she is in normal form.

Also I noticed that Terra's Nomura art was slightly modified in this new scan when compared with the older art that was released on TGS. Look at the hair bangs falling near her right eye. Facial shape is a bit different too. And look at where the edge of her chin is near the top of her cloak, both are in different positions.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...i_li/terra.jpg VS http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...li/terra-1.jpg

I wonder why there was a change... Maybe he wanted Terra to look younger? Cause the older image has Terra looking more mature to me.

Only one set of characters left to show off... Figures they save FF7 for last, despite Seph's early trailer appearance.

Rotorblade Nov 7, 2008 07:59 AM

The Amano similarities seem to be intentional, right down to Butz's anorexic look and Terra/Tina's blonde hair.

Jagged Nov 7, 2008 08:11 AM

Yeah, that was noticed by quite few people. Her updated version actually looks closer to Amano's design though, which is probably why he did that.

Metal Sphere Nov 13, 2008 06:31 AM

Well, this is a pretty neat thing to wake up to. The last two from the regular roster have just shown up in some scans along with a spiffy new trailer. This one gives us a pretty good look at Cosmos and Chaos along with the last four revealed in scans.

WolfDemon Nov 17, 2008 08:54 PM

Bit of a minor gripe, but I really don't see the need for them to change Terra's name to Tina and the spelling of Kefka's name to Cefca.

At first I wasn't very excited about this game, but for some reason I'm starting to become more interested in it. I'm curious to see how they'll explain why all these characters from different universes are coming together. I heard the word "Crystal" somewhere in the last trailer, so I'm betting that has something to do with it. I just hope it's not something lame like Cosmos and Chaos are having a contest to see who's side is stronger or some other such inane bullshit. Also, I want to see how a storyline for a dramatic progressive action fighting game can be, what was it, four times longer than Crisis Core?

Metal Sphere Nov 17, 2008 11:02 PM

Thanks for the sweet info, Jagged. Looking over that there aren't any real surprises, Kefka got an EX Burst attack based on the goddesses as expected, Sephiroth is basically the same as in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Onion Knight confirmed the belief that he was going to be an aerial fighter, etc...

WolfDemon, IIRC, Kefka and Terra have always been Cefka and Tina in Japan.

Ok here is a better translation of the Character fighting-styles and Ex-Bursts.

Quote:

Fighting styles and Ex-Bursts - Chaos side

andres_el_tiger was kind enough to upload the newest V-Jump scans and post them to ff_compilations. Of particular interest to me are the pages profiling each characters fighting style and Ex-Burst. So I've gone through and translated the ones for our Warriors of Chaos. The Warriors of Cosmos are forth-coming, since I decided to split this up for length.

Garland - While he moves slowly, his attacks are powerful. He overwhelms opponents by transforming his weapon!

Ex-Burst: "Soul of Chaos" - The ground quakes with an intense strike of this massive sword!

~*~

Emperor - With his signature land mines and lightning, he attacks by setting up traps. He is a character that requires a good deal of strategy.

Ex-Burst: "Absolute Rule" - With his demonic powers, he subjugates his opponent's very soul!

~*~

Cloud of Darkness - Her attacks change depending upon their timing. This can be utilized for powerful combos!

Ex-Burst: "Super Wave Canon" - The transcendent power of this canon erases all to leave only despair behind.

~*~

Golbez - His long range and short range attacks are preformed at the same time. It takes a mix of motions to fight skillfully with him.

Ex-Burst: "Twin Moons" - He and the Shadow Dragon wrapped around him fire off a massive magic attack together!

~*~

Ex-Death - He excels at guarding and counter-attacks. Powerful techniques seek out his enemies.

Ex-Burst: "The Laws of the Universe mean Nothing!" - By manipulating the dimension of complete "Void" he throws the entire universe into chaos!

~*~

Kefka - He fights using many types of powerful magic. Special commands can raise his power further!

Ex-Burst: "Warring Triad" - Memorize and repeat the sequence of button commands.

~*~

Sephiroth - An extremely strong fighter who constantly barrages his enemy with his long sword swings. He is also quite swift.

Ex-Burst: "Super Nova" - Hitting the button repeatedly during the time limit will raise its power.

~*~

Ultimecia - She specializes in long range magic attacks. She can release different types in rapid hails of magical bullets.

Ex-Burst: "Time Compression" - Like Squall's Renzokuken, its power is heightened with each pull of the trigger.

~*~

Kuja - He combines speed and magic together. As he flits about, he is constantly casting off spells!

Ex-Burst: "Last Requiem" - Kuja in the midst of Trance, fires off a sequence of powerful magic attacks!

~*~

Jecht - While strong overall, he is best as a close range fighter. His fighting power further increases when transformed!

Ex-Burst: "King of the Blitz" - The transformed Jecht readies a certain kill technique!?
lol at Clouds and Bartz's Bursts.

Quote:

Fighting styles and Ex-Bursts - Cosmos side

And now for our Warriors of Cosmos. Most of these are what we expected, but there are a few surprises....

Warrior of Light - He mainly fights with his sword but can also use his shield as a weapon. Overall, he is the balanced fighter!

Ex-Burst: "Oversoul" - He delivers a series of sword thrusts so fast they look like flickers of light!

~*~

Firion - He is far more suited to battling on the ground rather than the air. He can make full use of his weapons while fighting on the ground.

Ex-Burst: "Fervid Blazer" - He attacks with one weapon after another in sequence to battle with all of them!

~*~

Onion Knight - An exceptionally quick fighter. He avoids enemy attacks to come back with his own.

Ex-Burst: "Ninjutsu/Great Magic" - As a Ninja or a Sage, he uses different versions of the same burst!

~*~

Cecil - As a Dark Knight he is strong on the ground, while as a Paladin he is excellent in the air. Only by using both well can he really be put to work.

Ex-Burst: "Double Phase" - He combines the powers of light and darkness to deliver a great deal of damage.

~*~

Bartz - He has mastered all of the weapons of his fellow warriors. He can use magic as well.

Ex-Burst: Rapid Fire Dual-Wield Spell Blades - He combines the power of all of his companions into one fierce attack.

(Note: If you're not familiar with FFV, let me explain where the name comes from. Mimes in FFV can equip any skill they wish and a popular offensive strategy is to combine the Ninja's passive ability Dual-Wield to equip two swords with the Mystic Knight's Spellblades to charge both blades with a spell - usually Flare - and then the Ranger's Rapid Fire to attack four times per turn.)

~*~

Terra - She uses magic for both short and long range attacks. Managing the distance between her and her opponent is vital.

Ex-Burst: "Riot Blade" - Countless blades fly from her hands to tear her opponent to shreds.

~*~

Cloud - He specializes at slashing with one powerful blow at a time. This makes Brave Breaks easy for him.

Ex-Burst: "Omnislash" - Wave upon wave of raging blows! It's the strongest Limit Break!

(Note: If you've never seen Omnislash's crazy Japanese name, here you are - 超究武神覇斬, Choukyuubushinhazan literally, Super Ultimate War God Supreme Decapitation. Occasionally, translators can really improve things in localization...)

~*~

Squall - At perfect ease with combos, he is a close combat fighter. He rushes towards his enemies to tear them apart.

Ex-Burst: "Renzokuken" - Just like FFVII, hit the R button to Trigger a more powerful attack.

~*~

Zidane - He darts around quickly while playing with his opponents. While fighting in the air, he is capable of letting out a rush of energy waves.

Ex-Burst: "Reverse Gaia" - The enemy is overwhelmed by the ever-increasing acceleration of this series of attacks!

~*~

Tidus - With speedy attacks and fast leveling up, he's an excellent all-around character. He is quite easy to use.

Ex-Burst: "Blitz Ace" - Just like the original game, this Overdrive ends with him kicking off a Sphere Shot

great the game will be playable online! You'll have to download a program called Ad-Hoc Party(and have a ps3) to play it online which will be able to gather up to 16 players per room for some tournament.

Each player will have their own Friend card and you'll be able to download those card from other player. Those cards will contain even ghost of the players that is suppose to mimic the way that player play the game.

I guess we'll need to create a Dissidia tournament thread :p

Does anyone else find it slightly disturbing how that last picture has Sephiroth strategically placed over Chaos' crotch area, of all places?

Metal Sphere Nov 19, 2008 10:25 PM

That art of the Warriors of Chaos (and the other one with the Warriors of Cosmos) is almost a year old by now. Only thing that came to mind was his front and center position on there.

BTW, anyone noticed the character styles and how the matching protagonists and antagonists have... issues if they ever went head to head? Like Ultimecia's strengths being in staying at a distance and spamming magic while Squall is a close range fighter.

Here's the special OST that comes with that bundle that they're selling in Japan:

Damn if Nomura designed clothing doesn't sit awkwardly in Amano's artstyle. The layouts are gorgeous and then you have these small specks of "what the fuck is this doing here" here and there, Squall and Tidus especially.

Yeah, to me Tidus sticks out more because he's wearing fucking yellow. God his outfit was awful.

Love that green hair Terra is featured as a alternate costume. She looks nice.

Shonos Nov 22, 2008 12:26 PM

So apparently a FFXI character is in this too. According to some people who attended the Vanafest in Japan, they showed a video of Shantotto (Shantotto - FFXIclopedia - a Wikia Gaming wiki) duking it out in dissidia.

I'm honestly surprised they would do that, since FFXI is kind of.. distanced from other final fantasy games. I just have to wonder, will they add a villain from FFXI to match her, or is she just some extra character?

Metal Sphere Nov 22, 2008 12:28 PM

Well, it looks like the guys who got the site data way back then were right when they pointed out the FFXI and FFXII pages. Looks like Shantotto is in Dissidia.

http://i35.tinypic.com/25p6zxj.jpg

Mechanical google translation of the info on her

Heh, Shonos got the message in first.

Inhert Nov 22, 2008 01:17 PM

I don't see why not, FFXI has some very good storyline and some interesting characters, it's just that FFXI since it's an MMORPG is not well known like the other FF.

Sousuke Nov 22, 2008 01:53 PM

Shantotto, hmm. Makes me wonder if they will be throwing in a villain from FFXI as well... And if so, who?

WolfDemon Nov 22, 2008 06:23 PM

I would hope that they throw in some sort of villain to go with her. Sort of throws off the balance without one.

If this keeps up, I wonder if anyone from XII will be included. I never actually played it, since I didn't like the demo that came with DQVIII, but the Judges seem really badass. Wouldn't mind playing as one.

Jagged Nov 22, 2008 09:19 PM

Shantotto seems to be more of a "Secret Character", so I don't think the whole Hero=Villian thing will apply to her, or any other Character from now. She's apparently more of a gray character anyway.

More screens and info on Shantotto here:

http://community.livejournal.com/ffc...smos/15189.htm

Guess it's time to speculate on who from FFXII is going to show up.

*Hopes for Balthier*

Metal Sphere Nov 22, 2008 09:41 PM

Secret character? Most likely, but I still think she'll wind up on the Cosmos side and have a counterpart on the Chaos side. We've seen quite a few screens with characters on the same side duking it out, and one of the more recent scans shows a good guy's board... with a Cosmos boss piece.

Just my two cents, they'll probably keep the theme running even through the secret characters.

Sousuke Nov 23, 2008 02:59 AM

I wouldn't mind seeing Balthier as a FFXII entry, but I have this feeling that they'll use Fran instead to 'soothe' the masses. As for Shantotto's 'counterpart', I still have no real idea of who they'd throw in there. An Ark Angel? Kam'lanaut or Eald'narche? Promathia and Shadow Lord seem like they be 'too big'... I don't know, there's a bunch of villains, but none that really stand out.

Metal Sphere Dec 4, 2008 07:51 PM

Well, there's been tons of updates. It seems like the game's got something like 22 characters thanks to that one Dissidia guide's slip up. Then there's Nomura in that huge Famitsu interview responding in the affirmative when asked on whether a FFXII character would be in the game.

On top of all that on the 15th there's so japanese gaming show that'll have some secret thing air on there.

My guess? The final character is the secret character for the Chaos side, equalizing both sides' numbers. If they choose a character as kooky as Shantotto, it could easily be Dr. Cid.

Kolba Dec 8, 2008 05:05 PM

what the fuck, posted in the wrong thread, sorry.

Freelance Dec 8, 2008 09:11 PM

Dunno who Shantotto please. I suppose he/she's a character from FFXI. I'd actually like to see Dr. Cid in the game. He's the best Cid next to Cid Highwind.

Well the release date is getting near. Who's getting the Japanese version?

Dark Nation Dec 8, 2008 09:25 PM

I haven't really been keeping up with updates to this game *coughEhergeiz2cough*, except in sporadic random encounters with faimatsu scans posted online.

However, since apparently the counter-part to this Shantotto character is supposed to be of the 'chaotic' nature, and every main game so far has been represented (If they announce for X-2, I will laugh so fucking hard) then I'd second what Freelance said: Dr. Cid would be an excellent choice. He's chaotic and psychotic, both good qualities to represent XII's Villain, especially if they choose Ashe to be the Heroic side; then Dr. Cid can be a total ham: "TODAY IS YOUR DAY TO DIE, ASHELIA B'NARGIN DALMASCA!"

Metal Sphere Dec 8, 2008 10:25 PM

Well, in that LiveJournal link that was posted, apparently the guide to game says there's 22 in the roster. That leaves 1 character left and in the latest scan, Nomura basically confirms it's an FFXII character.

I'll second Dark Nation's choice, he's similar to Shantotto in that he's... eccentric and seemingly does his own thing.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Dec 10, 2008 08:43 AM

I'd suggest that a Judge would be more likely than Cid if it's a FFXII character. Maybe it'll be matey's brother, even if he does come good in the end? I'd laugh if they chose the Judge of Wings from Revenant Wings though.

Metal Sphere Dec 10, 2008 08:53 AM

Hmm, I don't know. They realized Prishe was a more popular and fitting choice, but put Shantotto in because it would be fun to play as a Taru.

Similar reasoning, if carried through to the FFXII choice, would lead us to something other than Gabranth. With that said, here's this week's Famitsu scan showing Nomura's Chaos and Cosmos drawings.

Chaos & Cosmos scan:

Rotorblade Dec 10, 2008 11:44 AM

Unless they're looking to even out the sexes, Balthier would pretty much be the choice I'd want, though since the overall theme is main protagonist/antagonist, Ashe and Vahn would more than likely be the ones selected. Though Balthier is more the main character of XII story wise, I don't really see it happening (though I'd like to be surprised). He's got the whole "Leading Man" line going for him, after all.

Metal Sphere Dec 15, 2008 01:38 PM

Damm, I was hoping it would be Cid, but a Judge is fine too.

Metal Sphere Dec 15, 2008 01:51 PM

Spoiler:
Yup, it was a predictable choice so not many people have been disappointed. It's pretty much confirmed it's Gabranth, since they seem to have called him back to reprise his role as Gabranth's VA (Akio Ohtsuka). Same guy who does Snake's voice in Japan, including Brawl.

Makes me wonder what his Ex-Mode and Burst are. I can see the mode being the two blades apart (or together, depending on what's their regular state) and the burst being Innocence or Circle of Judgement

From Famitsu huh. I aint surprised one bit. At least they were somewhat honest to not give it a full overexagerrating score liek they did with FFX.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Dec 15, 2008 10:23 PM

A 36 isn't a full on bullshit score?

what

Metal Sphere Dec 15, 2008 10:26 PM

He probably meant like what they did with FFXII, MGS4, Wind Waker, etc... Famitsu's reviews raise the question of whether they were paid for much more often than the other rags.

Jagged, those rankings aren't based on ease of use. Just reading them it's just the reviewer's opinions on the characters (for example, look at the near-squeals of fanboyism for Kefka and Sephiroth influencing the score). It was closer to a popularity contest than anything else.

Freelance Dec 15, 2008 10:31 PM

That's pretty much my point exactly. They're on the payroll like anyone else, and something relatively high is still, well, pretty hard to describe as "somewhat honest".

Metal Sphere Dec 15, 2008 11:13 PM

Yup, IIRC there was an incident a while back where Square-Enix pulled its ads and games from Famitsu and the magazine suffered. I forgot what the trigger was, but it's an example of how much sway they've got over them.

Well, now we wait and see if they'll have a scan for this last character.

I also find it cute how you thought I was referring to scans. No, I find that a bit weird, actually. I'm referring to games in general.

This kind of thing happens often. People assume who the best are before the games released. The game releases. Assumptions are usually wrong. Repeat.

EDIT: Just for future reference, even if the game's been released for even a few weeks, it's very rare and unlikely for a character to be classified as above anyone/all else when everyone still sucks at the game.

It really shouldn't matter if I was referring to Dissidia or games in general since either option includes Dissidia. Just included the "in general" part because this always seems to happen.

A lot of what I noticed includes people finding a favorite character and trying to emphasize what decent qualities they have and classify them as one of the best.

There are a bunch of moves you unlock but since I understand none, I do what I can to enable what's available. I played it for about an hour yesterday and it's just as I thought it would be from what I saw in the trailers. Completely eye candy for any FF fan.
It does get repetitive since doing combos doesn't really require any complex button presses although getting an air combo does need you to be ready for some quicktime events but the buttons are always the same anyway.
Not sure about anyone else but the limit breaks are very hard to get since the enemies usually die before you can get the meter up. I was only able to do it in the epilogue stages with the power up.
Speaking of epilogue, I completely love the song at the last tutorial stage (I think it's called DFF cosmos)

I have no idea what I'm picking with the options as well, but either way the fighting is pretty fun. I put squall vs cloud, and I got my ass kicked (squall) since I put the difficulty mega high apparently

makura Dec 18, 2008 01:19 PM

I thought the limit breaks were kinda easy to perform. I'm not sure if I have it right, but I think you're suppose to collect those shiny angel bell looking things to make the meter go up. Once that Meter is high, press R + square to go into EX mode. Connect a hit with Square attack and when you see a square symbol on the screen, press square again. Then a button combination follows.

I found myself skipping a lot of the cutscenes (playing Cloud's story) as it only has the guys standing around and talking. Does any action happen during these or am I not missing much?

If I understood it all, it might be a tad bit more enjoyable. But it gets repetitive to fight the same characters over and over.
It'd be better if it were on PS3 and have elaborate surprise intros like in those Dead Fantasy vids.

And.. US release in summer 2009..

Any attack they perform at this time will do exactly that amount of HP damage. It's kinda confusing actually. But I can sorta see the sense behind it... I think.

This'll prove useful to anyone needing some kind of useful observation regarding damage in this game.

From what I heard Square or Sony did something to the game that ripping the ISO out doesn't make it work. I am not sure if anyone has cracked the ISO yet.

Also thanks to youtube's new video identifier thing, Square has submitted the opening and ending CG FMVs to youtube to be blocked, meaning that anyone who tries to upload those videos would be blocked from doing so. A friend of mine who handles the Kh-vids.net fansite tried to upload the opening and ending and it was blocked.

He instead can only upload battles and the end credits. Music is a nice medley from FF1 to FFX.

Well, for one thing Wol's story is one of the hardest in the game. You can button mash most early Lv. enemies in the beginning of the game, but later on against high lv ones you have know more of complex parts of game i.e. using Items, Weapons, and Armor to customize your characters and gaining more attacks as you Level up. Some movies for characters can actually be brought at the PP shop, hopefully someone starts translating stuff, until then this might help:
