<3 BEAUTIFUL KATAMARI DAMACY <3

Woo! Coming to Xbox 360 and PS3!

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158808

Quote:

Namco has announced Beautiful Katamari Damacy for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, according to this week's Weekly Famitsu. Players can this time choose from more than 50 other characters besides the Prince, though their abilities will be pretty much the same. The environment is much bigger compared to the previous games, even to a point where you will be rolling a massive ball of katamari across the globe. Both versions of the game will also feature network compatibility but no specifics were disclosed.
So what about a Wii version? Jun Moriwaki, the director of the game comments, "The Wii is also one of our platform choices. We would like to challenge with different interfaces such as the keyboard on a PC, or the touch pad on the DS. However, the controller for Wii is quite unique so being able to overcome the different issues will be the key."

Looks like Wii owners will need to wait a little longer for a possible release. Beautiful Katamari is currently 50% complete; no release date for either version has been announced.
I can only imagine the possibilities given the power of these systems. An "infinite" level could potentially last hours!

Summonmaster Apr 18, 2007 02:49 PM

I came when I read this in Elixir's journal. Now, 50 characters is the kind of thing I like, even though they have no different abilities. I'm sure they will all be fun and messed up designs like the current cousins have. I'm glad that they're still going for innovative control schemes, and hopefully they don't mess around with their original formula too much. The series is not even close to stale yet, not yet having the feel of new releases be mere "expansion packs", IMO.

I wonder exactly where they can go for the ultimate level after you roll up the world? Well, you could sort of roll up planets already, maybe they'll go outside of the box.

cubed Apr 18, 2007 05:52 PM

Well, that will be the second reason I should get a 360 (the first being Eternal Sonata). Infinite level is a must. I'm pretty sure it would stop to Earth continent. Just without time limit.

Pac-Man LCD. :tpg: I'm glad they're keeping the simplistic style rather than the whole 'look at this ground texture it's using grassy wow-mapping with each blade rendered in 10,000 polygons' thing.

Kilroy Apr 19, 2007 04:58 AM

I like that they've only made the models and the like a bit softer to look at. I'm going to buy this if it gets an European release. More Katamari goodness is always appreciated!

guyinrubbersuit Apr 19, 2007 09:46 PM

Cool I'll probably get this. Definitely a big fan of the first Katamari Damacy.

speculative Apr 20, 2007 11:17 AM

Very cool, but I wonder when Katamari Damacy will "play out" if they don't change up the gameplay somehow? Of course, if they keep the price at $20-$30 it will still sell, and it definitely warrants at least one version on every system.

Summonmaster Apr 20, 2007 08:41 PM

Is the release date on gamefaqs right, with 10/26 being listed for Beautiful Katamari?

Rockgamer Apr 20, 2007 08:51 PM

I would rather have the rumored DS version instead (touch screen Katamari action would be hella awesome), but these games will definitely be great as well. Now I just need to actually get one of the systems it's gonna be on. :(

surasshu Apr 20, 2007 09:13 PM

Wow, good that it comes out on the 360 as well, I was a little worried there for a moment. :D

I guess Keita Takahashi is not involved with this project? I suppose it doesn't really matter since not much in the way of gameplay adjustments are required. I'd love to see something new by Takahashi, though... Is he still with Namco at all?

From the screenshots, I don't really see much of an improvement graphically, which is fine by me. More stuff to roll up is all I ask of a Katamari game. Wheee! :D

Dunno, there's no mention of that date in the PR. =o

Katamari is Back and Ready to Roll, Next-Gen Style, on the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 system

The King of All Cosmos, everyone’s favorite pint-sized Prince, and the whole wacky and wild Katamari crew will be making their hilarious next generation debut in Beautiful Katamari for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft later this year. The newest installment in the insanely popular and highly captivating Katamari series will be rolling into the next generation world with Katamari-style quirky and unique high-definition graphics, an unforgettable new soundtrack, and a new online multiplayer feature that will have old and new players alike spinning when the title hits store shelves.

Experience the new high-definition, next generation sights and sounds of Beautiful Katamari as the Prince takes on a new high-rolling adventure, with his famous cousins in tow, to save the Katamari universe once again after the King of All Cosmos has a very un-royal and unfortunate accident. As usual, the King of All Cosmos demands the service of his son, the Prince, to roll anything and everything up into massive clumps and set things right, bringing harmony once again to the Katamari Cosmos.

Take the Prince for a spin in astounding 720p next-gen graphics, that stay true to the quirky yet captivating art direction the series is known for, but glistening with a new coat of paint in high-definition, as the Prince is tasked to roll up bizarre objects in brand new environments. To keep his son inspired, the King of All Cosmos will provide another fresh and memorable soundtrack that will have players moving and grooving to the beat as they roll through the absurd, yet wonderful world of Beautiful Katamari.

One is a lonely number, but thankfully the Prince can humbly ask the aid of over 50 of his cousins to get the ball rolling through his quest. The cousins have discovered new games to play since last time out, and love to compete with friends in multiplayer Katamari rolling games either together or online over Xbox Live and the PLAYSTATION Network. The Prince and his cousins' online adventure won’t end there as a variety of future downloadable content will become available, continuing to expand on the amazing world of Beautiful Katamari, long after the game has launched. More online features will be rolled out at a later date.

Twilight's Twin Apr 23, 2007 12:48 AM

As with We ♥ Katamari, and more so now than ever, I am most excited by the potential soundtrack. Everything else at this point is supplementary. I've rolled stuff up, I've done that. It was fun the first time, and they added just barely enough the second time to get me to play it again. I don't have a PSP so I didn't play that one.

The first game's soundtrack is brilliant, such that I highly anticipated the second game's soundtrack, and that blew away my expectations. I even downloaded the PSP soundtrack and while not as densely stellar, still has some absolutely WONDERFUL songs. 3 for 3 means I virtually cannot WAIT for this game's music.

At this point for me, Katamari is a musician that sends a cool little game along with its album.

nazpyro Apr 23, 2007 01:16 PM

Oh awesome. I haven't had a Katamari fix for a while now. While I don't have a PS2 or 360 yet, if this is released late this year, I might have one by then (leaning on the 360), and this game would be one of the reasons for it. No announced Wii/DS version yet, but it would definitely be interesting to see what they come up with if they ever take up those consoles... Katamari Touch & Roll. ;_;

They'd title it Moderately Okay-looking Katamari Damacy. http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/1...otlaughvb6.gif

Internet rumours on the internet suggest that there will be a Wii version officially announced later (because it showed up on video store databases!), but they have to get the Atari 2600 sprite engine juuuust right. Also new screens! I resized them from the original 400,000 X Godzilla dimensions.

Originals here. Or there. Somewhere.

Inhert Apr 23, 2007 09:41 PM

I was always intrigued by tis series but never tried one. but I have to say that's I'm pretty exited to try this ps3 version ^^ I wonder if they'll use the sixaxis for this.

if I wanted to try the series now, which one do you recommend me, the first or second on the ps2 or the psp version?

Infernal Monkey Apr 23, 2007 10:32 PM

I've only played the second one (because the first never got released here =o~), but I hear the original is much better. No idea about the PSP one!

Twilight's Twin Apr 24, 2007 12:58 AM

People just think the first one is better because it was the first one they played and fell in love with.

Technically speaking, I believe the second is a superior game, especially if you never played any of them. There are more levels, and more variety in both objectives and settings.

Monkey King Apr 24, 2007 06:05 AM

So, looks like they just added some pretty filtering to the baseline PS2-level graphics, and are using the remaining processing power to cram more junk into the levels. This is a stratagem I approve of 100%. Namco has my money.

speculative Jul 2, 2007 02:48 PM

YES! Wiitamari Damacy: http://wii.ign.com/articles/800/800761p1.html

Unfortunately Katamari DamPS3 it appears for you PS3'rs...

The_Griffin Jul 2, 2007 04:08 PM

Don't get too excited. It's a rumor at this point.

speculative Jul 2, 2007 05:24 PM

They need to release a Katamari controller for Wii that you stick your Wiimote into, and then roll it around on the floor to control the prince! :D That would be about as win as it could possibly get, ever...

Slayer X Jul 2, 2007 06:22 PM

Anything & everything coming out of the rumour mills are just that, rumours. Watch the stupid thing come out for the iPhone or something after this huge conspiracey. lol *jk*

A far better pun would be "Katamawii Damacy", but you had to kill that potential. Nice one!

Tilt control would be... Interesting. I played Kororinpa and liked it, but would it really lend itself well to KD?

As good or better than tank control with two analog sticks, I'd wager.

Slayer X Jul 3, 2007 08:47 AM

Well Nintendo might make Namco make the game have dual Wiimote controls in order to drive Wiimote sales out the roof (cause they're not already). Then it would work like with two analog stick but motion controlled.

It sounds rediculous at first, but these are the guys who spent $50 to upgrade the GC, repacked it and then sold it for 250% of the GC's price.

The GameCube has a single-threaded PowerPC processor running at 485 MHZ. The Wii's processor, running at 729MHz, is faster.
The GameCube has 24 MB of RAM. The Wii has 88 MB of RAM.
The video card in the GameCube has 16 MB of video RAM, while the Wii has 88 MB.

(I know it doesn't sound like it but I am kidding around, I have a Wii and I LOVE it, however I still can't get over this fact ^^; )

Inhert Jul 6, 2007 10:50 AM

even if they still didn't announce it officialy, the official website doesn't show the ps3 logo anymore... so i guess we can forget the ps3 version...

and I was waiting for that version to try that series. I guess I'll go look for those ps2 version now :\

Slayer X Jul 6, 2007 10:54 AM

From what I've seen of the 360 one though it isn't really that much better then the PS2 ones anyway. I know that you can roll the universe up now and the game probably has Anti-aliasing and stuff but still, the PS2 ones were great, and if you haven't played them then there ya go ;)

Krelian Jul 6, 2007 11:02 AM

Reportedly Famitsu says the PS3 version is canned.

UltimaIchijouji Jul 6, 2007 11:08 AM

Reportedly Bandai Namco says the PS3 version is canned.

Slayer X Jul 6, 2007 11:14 AM

Reportedly I'm hungry and am going to go to Wendy's. Anyone want to come?

P.S.
I think we can all agree on the status of the PS3 release.

UltimaIchijouji Jul 6, 2007 11:24 AM

I'm pretty starved too.

I guess that this coming out on 360 cements my purchase of one within the next few weeks. With that new extended warranty I guess I shouldn't worry about Red Rings of Death anymore either. I'd like it if my console didn't fail at all though.

Krelian Jul 6, 2007 11:27 AM

Oh okay.

Yeah, it isn't on their E3 lineup for PS3, either. Pretty much confirmed.

Slayer X Jul 6, 2007 11:43 AM

Ultima, you're seriously buying a 360 for Katamari? Sure there's lots of reasons to buy one, but not that. It's just an updated rehash of We Love Katamari. It doesn't even look that much better or even have any new modes other then online.

But hey, whatever turns you on. I sure as hell don't have to understand.

Azingno Jul 8, 2007 04:53 PM

Sucks for SONY to lose a great game, I almost wonder if they'll even last before the year ends, but whatever atleast it'll be on the Wii.

I'm buying a 360 because I'm a multiplatformer. I always have all three systems of the generation, and the 360 is the one left that I need. Katamari being on it just justifies the purchase a little more.

Slayer X Jul 9, 2007 03:06 PM

Ok got ya. Knew that there had to be more to that then what I saw.

PSWii60 ALL THE WAY!!!

The Mario, Mass Effect, MGS4, GTA4 period is going to be a killer period. Both in awesomeness and stamina to play the games... oh yeah, and on the finances too ;)

Kairyu Oct 16, 2007 05:18 PM

So... three months later and I'm wondering. Did anyone pick up this game? It should be out some time today =p.
Is it really a rehash of the ps2 version (plus achievements?) The demo version didn't tell me much apart that it plays much like its predecessors.

For a 360 game that's 40 dollars I have reason to believe it is. Then again, it's KD and Namco always prices that game well below the standard retail.

Wall Feces Oct 16, 2007 05:39 PM

From what I've heard, it's usual Katamari fare... As in, way too short, but the time you play is pure happiness <3

I'll put it on the Christmas list.

Single Elbow Oct 16, 2007 05:39 PM

God Slayer, way to fire off the favoritism. Anyway.

And the game is going to be released ten days from now, I believe. Played the demo and it was incredibly fun. However, it's only on my "must buy" list, seeing as there is COD4 and Mass Effect coming out.

It came out today, as far as I know. I'm teetering on whether to pick it up now or wait, since I've got a good backlog of games at the moment.

FatsDomino Oct 16, 2007 06:08 PM

I'm confused. Is the game at retailers like Best Buy and Gamestop or is it only available on XBL?

Slayer X Oct 16, 2007 06:11 PM

Yeah all the backwards developer comments and blog posts have really got me turned around on this game too.

UPDATE

Looks like it's an actual hardcopy. Still, the PS3 version details are more twisted and hard to follow then some MGS cinematics.

Yes, that's what I thought. Though I'm really curious as to what else was crammed into this version of Katamari. Meh, I think I'll pick it up. I need something else to play on my 360 other than Halo3.

I called my local gamestop about it and they said it should be on their shelves either this afternoon or tomorrow.

I guess in other areas it can take as long as a week to get to a store.

Picked up my copy today. Beautiful Katamari is not coming to the PS3 as it has the " only on 360 " sticker on the top that wasn't on Eternal Sonata.

So if PS3 owners are expecting Beautiful Katamari, they're Shit outta luck. I've yet to play the game as i just got home from work and have to grade some papers. When i'm finished with that, i'm gonna boot it up and i'll tell everyone what i think.

Slayer X Oct 16, 2007 06:55 PM

That's just it though. There's 14million stories, all with different rumours "facts" and speculation on what consoles the game is coming out for (most of the havok caused by Namco themselves) that I wouldn't be surprised if people somewhere were making bets as to what all the end product would end up coming out on.

It's great that the 360 people get to experiance this amazing palette of drugs that you don't consume. However I myself would probably never buy the game even if it were the greatest high that you can get without actually taking drugs seeing how I got bored of the secong game long before I even completed the game 100%. I just can't handle more of the same, without SOMETHING being different.

People purchase consoles for no reason, supplying a single game as a reason sure as hell shouldn't be relevant in this instance. How do you know it doesn't look much better and doesn't have new modes? Both PS2 games were in 480i, this will be in 720p, and have online.

Oh wait you haven't bought or played it.

Neither can I, is your attitude getting a sequel?

Lukage Oct 17, 2007 08:57 PM

The PS3 version was confirmed cancelled, but no word on the Wii version. Chances are it'll just stay on the 360, which is a very sad thing.

FatsDomino Oct 17, 2007 10:13 PM

It doesn't mean they can't make ANOTHER Katamari game for the PS3 or Wii. It just won't be BEAUTIFUL. Really, Namco is going to milk this franchise all they can and rightly so. Just give it some time.

so uh

I'll be buying this, but how's the soundtrack? I've only heard one song, which is features iDOLM@STER voices and is already plastered all over niconico.

FatsDomino Oct 21, 2007 08:32 PM

The soundtrack is decent enough. It's katamari-ish but not as great as the first two. There's a few remixes here and there that are fun too. I haven't come across anything painful yet. It's just good background music that keeps the mood happy while you torture away at pleasing the king who is never fucking happy with your work. Never. :(

kbardin Oct 22, 2007 01:12 PM

anybody had any problems with their xbox360? i had to send mine back in to get repaired... 3 blinking lights of death.

FatsDomino Oct 22, 2007 01:42 PM

This isn't the right thread for that, sir. Explore a little more. =)

nuttyturnip Oct 27, 2007 05:51 PM

What's up with the lag in the online mode? Every match I've played has had some amount of lag, and it really hurts the game. Maybe they'll be some kind of patch released soon.

FatsDomino Oct 27, 2007 06:01 PM

If you are referring to when you were playing with me then that is to be expected because I was hosting. I'm on really shitty DSL. I just tested online for the first time today because I saw you were online. =)

nuttyturnip Oct 27, 2007 06:04 PM

No, it wasn't just you. I played the game some yesterday as well, and most of the matches I played had the same problem. Maybe I need to try hosting to see if that fixes things.

You should have sent me an invite for your game. I stumbled across it accidentally and was like, "Oh, that's AcerBandit, I should play that match!"

FatsDomino Oct 27, 2007 07:45 PM

Haha that makes it even better. ='D

But that does suck that the game is pretty laggy. I had fun still. =)

value tart Oct 28, 2007 10:46 PM

Anyone else find it odd that there's an achievement for a 1,500,000km katamari and Everyone's Katamari is only 19 million km? That's a rather small number of people (read: probably like 3) that have gotten that achievement. =o

FatsDomino Oct 28, 2007 11:01 PM

I bet they were all from Japan too. The crazies hold all the records.
