NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams

http://gonintendo.com/?p=14685

Next Month in ONM has a Wii game announcement coming. They gave 1 hint about it in the advertising for it.

The Image is a star constellation shaped like a baby in the womb. Seems like a really familiar image but i cant remember where ive seen it before. Its also a Classic Game being reborn,so i guess the image could be linked to that.

If this is the long awaited sequel to NiGHTS I'm gonna cry. Not tears of pain, but tears of JOY!

Secret edit: It was NiGHTS. Discuss. :]

Infernal Monkey Mar 20, 2007 05:47 PM

Knowing ONM, it'll be a new exclusive Tetris game or something. "We just used the NiGHTS background to keep you guessing!"

“I’m very aware how much coverage our Next Month page is getting across the globe right now…This is not an April Fool (joke)…The whole point of the Next Month image is to be a teaser and to get people guessing. It’s just A BIT OF FUN. There are no lies in there. Innevitably the situation might change between the time of the mag going to print and the release of the next issue (it is a good six weeks after all).”
Yay fre advertising. Don't think anything of it until it's here. The more anticipated, the crappier it will be.

Officials Announcements

speculative Mar 20, 2007 10:08 PM

Interesting. I played Nights on my roommate's Saturn back in college. I thought it was ok, but honestly we had way more fun playing Mr. Bones. However, this game, done right, is exactly what the Wii needs, fun > graphics. For example this game would make no sense on the PS3 or 360, jimo.

Helloween Mar 21, 2007 12:00 AM

I've always wanted to play NiGHTS, but i never got the chance. I've always been quite interested in it, but i've never even seen a copy of it in my life.

This is quite exciting.

Kaelin Mar 21, 2007 05:07 PM

I played and beat the original NiGHTS on the Saturn back in its heyday, and this announcement makes me both happy and wary at the same time. I really loved the gameplay in NiGHTS yet with Sega's recent track record, I'm worried that they're just going to screw it all up like they have all their other classic franchises. I'm going to have to remind myself to remain indifferent to this whole thing until the game actually comes out.

Prinnydood Mar 21, 2007 08:13 PM

Gotta say I'm really excited for this. I loved the first game and ever since I first saw the Wii in action I thought Nights would translate well on the system. Kinda hoping they keep the Wiimote controls fun and simple..too many overcomplications could hinder the gameplay but we'll see..guess its still a ways off anyway.

Muzza Mar 22, 2007 01:11 AM

This is great news. I've never played the original NiGHTS, but I've been dying to. I might start here, when it eventually comes out. This game should be perfect for the Wii ^_^ (I may not have played the original NiGHTS but I know a lot about it)

Here's hoping they get the same composers back...their work was pretty amazing on the predecessor.

Why the hell not? Can you just imagine if they recreated the original NiGHTS for high def?

Since Yuji Naka's left Sonic Team, does this mean a NiGHTS sequel won't suck like the previous 2 years of Sega's doings? (Excluding Sonic Rush)

Infernal Monkey Mar 22, 2007 04:30 AM

Nah, Yuji Naka was just part of the problem. Sonic Team/Whatever they are now needs to completely die for the world to be safe again.

Gechmir Mar 22, 2007 09:38 AM

Beyond Oasis was announced for Virtual Console, too. Fucking awesome week <3

I'd like to hope that NiGHTS for Virtual Console would open doors for other Saturn masterpieces. It'd be fucking dynamite. I hate having to maintain my modchipped Saturn. The chip goes bad almost every six months >_<

garthvadr3 Mar 22, 2007 10:43 AM

I thought it was an official sequel, not a virtual console title. In fact I am almost 100% positive it is, but Sega did not dismiss the fact that the original game may still come to Wii via virtual console. That would be awsome, while they are at it, they should bring the panzar dragoons too, hell and NEC should bring Turbo Duo games, I love Gates and Lords of Thunder. Then the supposed hard drive that is being made for Wii will be a must.

Gechmir Mar 22, 2007 10:51 AM

It is a sequel, but this could open up doors for NiGHTS 1 to be on the Virtual Console. I'm pretty sure they'd move to do this if they bothered with a sequel.

garthvadr3 Mar 22, 2007 10:56 AM

well they better because I would get that on virtual console in a second.

and the turbo duo games, and panzaar dragoons...... Y's..........

FatsDomino Mar 22, 2007 01:35 PM

Yeah, they seriously need to get hard drive support on the Wii. They also need to make a sub-channel system for Virtual Console games eventually.

Torte Mar 23, 2007 02:00 AM

You just knew it was coming. Didn't they say NiGHTs 2 didn't happen only cos they couldn't get motion sensitivity controls good enough back then? Thanks the lord for Nintendo!

horseman85 Mar 23, 2007 11:03 AM

This is truly great news. I never played the original NiGHTS game but my cousin used to have the Christmas NiGHTS demo and I would play that one level everytime I was there. Beat my cousin's high score too . . . The control possibilities for NiGHTS should be very intriguing.

My favorite game in all of existence is finally getting a sequel. I've waited and waited and waited for this day. FOR OVER 10 years, I've waited. Even when Naka stated that the original nights was not going to have a sequel, I still had hoped that it would one day.

AND NOW THAT DAY IS UPON US!!!

Man I cannot wait to see how this game is implemented on Wii.

I hope to god sonic team doesn't fuck this one up(They've been doing that left and right with the recent sonic games).

Gameplay video thing

E3 demo has no music, and the boss battle looks about as fun as cancer. But aside from that! :] Hey this thread's a mess!

Paco Jul 9, 2007 09:39 PM

That game looks pretty standard graphics-wise but man... It's fucking NiGHTS~

It's also amazing how dull it feels without music. I'm still stoked about this and really wanna get a Wii because of games like this. I still miss the original BADLY and I've been jonesin' for a sequel for well over 10 years so I definitely want to play this game if ever there's a demo available; WITH MUSIC, THIS TIME.

Kaelin Jul 10, 2007 04:58 PM

Is it just me or do the links both bring up nothing? I went and searched youtube and found two other links, so I'm not sure if these are the same as what is (was?) on Gamespot's page:

I guess this would be more exciting if I had some idea of what it is you DO in Nights. I hear an awful lot about how good the original game was, but I'm pretty well mystified about what the game was actually about. I guess you fly around and pass through rings or something?

My cousin had the original on Saturn and I remember playing it once and not getting it. I must say that the narrator in the video Kaelin put the link could start quite the cult. His voice is hypnotizing, its nuts! The levels do look very open and the game looks light hearted and fun, could be a rather relaxing game to play

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (Sega) - 8, 7, 7, 7 - (29/40)
Ouch.

Slayer X Dec 5, 2007 10:41 AM

Probably mostly due to the game being short and there seems like there's a lot of recycled material from the original, cept higher res. Like that fat boss that rolls areound, he was in the original.

Or at least I'm hoping that's all it was cause that's what I'm prepaired and expecting to happen. Hopefully there's no performance issues or something.

Django! Dec 5, 2007 02:23 PM

Pretty excited. New title keeps the aesthetics and charm of NiGHTS into Dreams. Some good music in them there videos, too. Only problem is that it looks a little slow, but that could be blamed on how far zoomed out the camera is compared to the first game.

Ouch.

Honestly, I'm not that surprised. When the original came out, only Saturn/Sega magazines praised it, multiformat mags pretty much trashed the game with "pretty but very basic and repetitive".

Conan-the-3rd Dec 5, 2007 05:53 PM

Also Famisu doens't strike me as the be-all end all, I meen sure, FF 12 is good, but perfect 40 good?

No one got it.

Will probably be a redux of 1996 all over again.

Torte Dec 6, 2007 02:23 AM

Aren't the best game simple and repetitive, though? I'd hit up Pac-Man over FF-whatever anyday.

Elixir Dec 11, 2007 01:39 AM

"The Japanese version of NiGHTS for Wii has 6 languages to choose from, Japanese, English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian."

Time to find out if this is true.

Lukage Dec 19, 2007 06:45 PM

Got it and played for a half hour. The Famitsu rating seems on-par thus far. I'd recommend renting this one first.

Considering I like RPGs and I played FF12 a good 20 minutes before deciding it was garbage... (well the story and battle engine couldn't grab my attention) and considering I'm playing this more than I've ever played FFXII... I have to disagree with Famitsu's ratings :P

Yes, but they almost always have some never-before-seen twist. Pong was simple too but it rocked cause there was nothing like it. Nights didnt bring anything new other then the "dreamlike" scenario, which quite honestly looked like a big pile of pixelated turd.

What other games were available where you fly around through hoops/collecting orbs as a purple transvestite in 1996?

Slayer X Dec 22, 2007 02:23 PM

I bought this game last week, really wish I hadn't though. Everything other then the graphics of this game are totally dated.

The fact that this game doesn't have checkpoints between stages is lame. And that it doesn't have checkpoints between the beginning of a stage and the Boss battle is what made me take it back to the store. I really wanted to like this game and I did when I started playing. But as soon as you have to actually play the game it all goes downhill from there.

I'm going to stick with my Saturn version and use my credit from this to get Zack and Wiki which is a killer title and the most underrated game of the year (consumer wise).

Or had amazing analog controls?

evilboris Dec 22, 2007 09:11 PM

Mario 64 had you flying, running, swimming, and doing god knows what else with a gay italian plumber with a squeaky noise (yes, mario is gay, faggot saved the princess 7918 times already and still didnt do as much as coping a feel, bitch probably allows being kidnapped in hope for some action), using full analog controls that actually mattered from the gameplay perspective.

Honest to god, I didn't notice any difference between the analog and dpad controls in Nights. Maybe its just me but the game behaved the exact same way in both modes. I love the Saturn, its my favorite console by far, but Nights is just plain overrated IMO.

surasshu Dec 22, 2007 09:22 PM

I'm pretty sure NiGHTS was released before Mario 64. But Mario 64 is rubbish and has the additional drawback of being on the N64, so it's not really like this matters much.

I don't really have any "proof" of this, but my theory is that most people haven't actually played NiGHTS and just say they think it's a great game cause that's what you're supposed to say. I'm like 99% sure that all those reviewers that are like "is it as good as the original????" never played the game when it came out.

Anyway, I do like NiGHTS, I don't think it's overrated per se. It has one of the most amazing interactive sound systems ever conceived, great soundtrack in general, and I really enjoyed playing it, I put like 80+ hours into it so I should. At the time, I thought it looked incredible (it hasn't aged well though I must say, like most 3D games). But I still stand by my theory that a lot of people who praise the living shit out of this game never played it. I just don't see how all those people even owned a Saturn.

Back on topic, I'm saddened that NiGHTS Journey of Dreams seems like it didn't turn out that good. I didn't have huge hopes or anything, but I was hoping it would be fun and if it's not, that's really disappointing. Still, I'll give it a try when I see it in the shops in EU. I didn't have high hopes for the new Sega Rally, and that's turned out to be my Game of the Year. You just never know until you try it for yourself...

Slayer X Dec 22, 2007 11:42 PM

Like I said. NiGHTS biggest problem was the horrible checkpoint system. Mostly because there ISN'T ONE.

The other major issue next to that is that about 50% of the game is PLATFORMING with NON NiGHTS characters. WTF???

What a disapointment.

I'll have to disagree with you there and say that REZ has that title. Or at least in my book.

evilboris Dec 23, 2007 11:44 AM

For the record, I did play Nights, in fact beaten the whole game on my original disc, multiple times, also played Xmas Nights to death (strangely enough I find Xmas Nights much better then the regular game... theres actually a point to it, unlocking the presents which add lotta more gameplay. Regular Nights is just fly around for a bunch of levels, then beat the grandmaster foshizzle wizeman and.... thats it.).

Mario 64 was... well, kind of revolutionized 3d platforming as a whole. I personally didn't like it but its the exact opposite of rubbish. I think you are confusing it with every other 3d Mario game made afterwards.

And Columns has better interactive sound. It actually changes as you play (and it has awesome tunes too). In Nights, I couldnt ever make the music change because of my actions, if it changed, it only did after I reloaded the level. Once I spent the whole run killing off those little egghead flying turds and it had no effect on the gameplay at all.

Well yeah that one would probably be my #1, as well. But Rez sorta cheats by making the game "slave" to the music (although the result is amazing, so I'm not complaining).

As far as the system goes in NiGHTS, it's clever and well-executed and results in a vast amount of variative music that doesn't turn into a mess. Good stuff.

Quote:

This alone proves my point that Mario 64 was a horrible game. :D Seriously though, I had absolutely zero fun playing the game. Just cause it was loved by many and hugely influential doesn't mean I can't think Mario 64 is one of the worst games I ever played.

I've since avoided any 3D Mario game, so I haven't played Sunshine or Galaxy (are there other 3D Marios?). I guess they could be worse.

Anyway I found out NiGHTS Journey of Dreams isn't even out here yet, it's coming in 2008, just like Zack & Wiki. It really pisses me off that we have to pay double price for the same Goddamn games and that they come out months later. Unbelievable.

speculative Dec 23, 2007 08:43 PM

Like many other Wii titles, this is a $49.99 round disc that probably has about $1.99 worth of content on it. We rented teh original in college and it was kind of fun while it lasted but not serious fun, just dinking around in a 3-D world kind of fun. Seeing as how 3-D worlds have been out for quite some time now, I think I'll pass. I just can't see how they can justify pricing games like this at exactly the same price as Metroid 3 or Galaxy...

Lukage Dec 24, 2007 02:21 PM

Oh hey, for those who don't know, this was done by Sonic Team.

Karasu Dec 24, 2007 03:50 PM

Seeing as it's christmas, I took out my Saturn like I do every year and played Christmas NiGHTS. Beat the game with Elliot and Claris to get the star. Good memories and good times, makes me think about my childhood every time I play it.

I havent played the sequel, but i'll hold judgement until I do play it. I'm not expecting it to be like the Saturn version, but I am hoping the happy music is still there [which it is I believe], and the colorful worlds [which that's a given].

However I see all of you are very picky, and act like you're all Adam Sessler with the jaded video gamer eye that has to see a flaw in every game that's released. The bottom line is, is the sequel fun? Is it filled with the magic that the first game had? And this is to the gamers who fell in love with the first game, not the people who played the NiGHTS series for the first time on the Wii.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Dec 24, 2007 04:10 PM

Sessler is one of the most forgiving reviewers around.

And I've heard nothing but bad things from EVERYONE, so.

Still wanna rent it. Never was expecting much considering Sega's penchant for fucking up, though.

What's truly funny is speculative's...erm... justification of the cost. Holy shit. Devon needs to come back from her vacation.

I'm a pretty big Sega fan, even after everything had gone downhill after all these years. NiGHTS 2 is genuinely average at best. The flying segments are faithful, in some respects better than the original, particularly if you use the non-Wii-mote controls. The problem is that Iizuka decided to cram in as much extra content in for the sake of having it, which is the problem with 3D Sonic games in general. This game is no exception. There's all this extra crap that gets in the way of the good stuff, and you are forced to trudge through it.

If they had stuck to the simple formula of the original, I think fans of the original would have been a lot happier. They tried to please everyone and instead, as the saying goes, they ended up pleasing no one.

Karasu Dec 24, 2007 06:30 PM

Well the fact that Yuji Naka has nothing to do with this sequel says a lot I think. Regardless, Id love to play it since I am an old NiGHTS fan. Reala looks pretty fucking cool I must say, but I have yet to see Wizeman in any new pics.
